Lucy Getting a Major Makeover

ucy has disappeared behind weatherproof scaffolding as she undergoes the largest restoration effort since she was saved from the wrecking ball in 1970. Lucy’s entire metal skin surface is going to be replaced with all new metal. More than 50% of her skin has deteriorated beyond repair. After careful analysis by Lucy’s restoration architect, Margaret Westfield of Westfield Architects and Preservation Consultants of Haddon Heights, NJ, along with metallurgist, Scott Kreilick, it has been determined that replacing her metal skin would be more cost effective than trying to remove the 50 years of paint and rust.

Despite being located just a few hundred feet from the Atlantic Ocean, Lucy the Elephant was never designed to withstand the harsh environment associated with seaside living; however, this amazing building has stood the test of time surviving hurricanes and lightning strikes, amongst numerous other disasters.

As part of their ongoing challenge to preserve Lucy the Elephant, one of the biggest threats faced by the Save Lucy Committee is water. Being a wooden structure covered in sheets of tin metal, the only line of protec-

Now you see her, now you don’t. tion against rust is a thin layer of paint that has been applied every 4-5 years since 1970.

Unfortunately, this paint layer has been ineffective in preventing rust from continuing to form on the metal — so much so, that areas of the metal have rusted completely through, leaving holes that expose the wooden framing underneath to water that is infiltrating the structure.

In response, the Save Lucy Committee is following expert recommendations to remove all of the existing

paint layers on the structure down to the bare metal, and then make any necessary repairs to the metal and seams before applying a new high-tech coating system in hopes of resolving this issue.

The type of metal used to cover Lucy the Elephant is no longer produced, so a new metal must be chosen that will be able to withstand the harsh seaside environment where Lucy resides while respecting Lucy’s historic fabric — tin. Of the options presented to the Committee by its metallurgist,

one metal alloy stood out ahead of the rest due to its excellent corrosion resistance in marine applications, its malleability, and its strength. Monel 400, a nickel-copper alloy, will be used to cover Lucy and hopefully allow the historic structure to survive another 140 years and beyond.

The target date to re-open Lucy is Memorial Day weekend of 2022.

What If We Didn't Reset Our Clocks?

A

re you used to the early darkness yet? This week, the sun is setting over South Jersey around 4:40 p.m., thanks to the end of daylight saving time a few weeks ago. The earliest sunsets of the year are just about upon us. From November 30 through December 13, the sun will sink below the western horizon at 4:34 p.m. It's all part of an almost 10-week stretch, specifically 69 days from early November to mid-January, which all feature a sunset before 5 p.m.

However, what if we didn't "fall back" to eastern standard time? What if we practiced daylight saving time year-round? It would be a quick fix to those that despise the early darkness late each fall through the winter. In fact, the earliest sunset under year-

round daylight saving time would be just after 5:30 p.m.

We seem to be slowly trending towards it. Six months of daylight saving time started as the common practice throughout most (but not all) of the United States back in 1966.

It was later extended by 3 weeks in the mid-1980s and extended by another 4 weeks again in the early 2000s. Since 2007, daylight saving time (DST) has run from the second Sunday in March through the first Sunday in November.

Add it all up, and that means we're only on eastern standard time (EST) for around 17 weeks out of a 52-week year, or just less than one-third of the year. DST has become our new "standard,” and there is (stalled) legislation to make it a year-round practice in the United States. Unfortunately, just like everything else today, like climate change or mask mandates for instance, what time we practice has become political.

Among the talking points: Supporters of DST say more hours of prime daylight are better for the economy, and also for reducing Seasonal Affective Disorder, the seasonal depression that can come with early darkness and shorter days. Mean-

while, opponents claim that standard time is more in line with our circadian rhythms and that our health could suffer without it.

Here in South Jersey, most would likely be in favor of getting rid of the pre-5 p.m. sunsets this time of year. Be aware though that there would be a price to pay, especially if you're a morning person or an early riser. Since we wouldn't fall back the clocks, we wouldn't shift the evening daylight to the morning in early November. As a result, very late sunrises would be the cost.

Just how late are we talking?

From early December to early February for about two months, the sunrise in South Jersey would be from 8:00-8:20 a.m. each morning. That means commuting in the darkness.

Kids would wait at the bus stop and even start school in the dark. That's another drawback to year-round daylight saving time, and opponents say school hours would have to shift for safety purposes. Of course, that can be logistically difficult, and here's where politics can start to creep in. The core of the debate revolves around which is worse, early sunsets or late sunrises, and what are the positive and negative physical, psychological, and economic impacts of each.

practice. Arizona and Hawaii don't recognize daylight saving time, and the rest of the country does. Barring any dramatic coming together of the warring time zone factions, we can probably expect the status quo in South Jersey for the foreseeable future.

Whatever side you are on, remember the amount of daylight doesn't change. Our days continue to grow shorter through December 21, the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year, with only 9 hours, 23 minutes, and 34 seconds of daylight.

Each day will then grow longer through mid-June and the first day of summer, which features a whopping 14 hours, 56 minutes, and 47 seconds of daylight. That's just over a fiveand-a-half-hour difference. It's a fun trip around the sun every year no matter when it rises or sets, isn't it?

Feeling Salty—Brine Your Thanksgiving Turkey for Extra Flavor Let It Grow

ack in 2003, I decided to host Thanksgiving for the extended family group including in-laws. In those days, we numbered about sixteen people. Now I realize I must have been temporarily insane because I had a seven-year old and a five-year old, and was nursing a one-month old baby.

Planning was crucial. Fortunately, I stumbled upon a make-ahead feast article in my Bon Appetit magazine.

It gave an organized schedule to separate the tasks for the week into a less stressful, manageable plan. The pages of that magazine are now tattered, but I still follow the same basic schedule. One of my favorite parts is making the brine for the turkey.

With the gigantic pot of salted water and spices, I feel like I’m stirring my witches brew.

Brining your turkey infuses it with flavor and keeps it moist and juicy.

Salt causes things to retain water, something I painfully remember the day after eating out at a chain restaurant. If you follow my trusty schedule, you should begin brining your turkey T-day minus two; so for a Thanksgiving meal, start on Tuesday.

Plan ahead and think about what you are going to do. I’m your poster child for learning from my mistakes.

Consider that a twenty-pound turkey, plus eight quarts of water, is heavy. I usually purchase a disposable styrofoam cooler or very large pot to use in the refrigerator to hold the beast, and use a rimless cookie sheet underneath to support the whole thing.

Use large bags (double or triple) inside your cooler or container. The last thing you want is a broken styrofoam container and a turkey brine flood. In the past, I used clean trash bags, but things have come a long way since 2003. So, in recent years, I have been able to find brining bags, or at least turkey roasting bags. Make sure your turkey is fully immersed into your potion and secure the bags. Some people recommend using a standard large cooler that can be used outside of the refrigerator to save valuable refrigerator real estate when you need it most. But, personally, the fear of giving 20 people salmonella makes me opt for the refrigerator.

Your turkey should be immersed in its brine for 18-20 hours. If you are a procrastinator like me, who has had a turkey that wasn’t quite defrosted, this will finish it off. (Don’t forget to remove that gross bag of neck and giblets.) On Wednesday, remove the bird from its brine, drain thoroughly, pat dry, and store it in a large roaster layered with multiple paper towels.

In print, this sounds so simple, but you may want to enlist the help of a friend or partner. I have performed this step with near-catastrophic re-

sults that were worthy of an “I Love Lucy” episode. The water and turkey will be very heavy and you don’t want that raw turkey water on your floor.

Don’t let all these warnings scare you off though. You will be glad when you and your family taste the end result.

When it comes time to roast your turkey, don’t stuff a brined bird.

Brining a turkey does not make it overly salty, but it could cause your stuffing to be too salty. Bake your stuffing outside of the bird in a separate dish.

It then becomes “dressing”, which is better anyway, since you can achieve those browned edges instead of the mushy stuffing that comes out of the turkey’s cavity. Also, when you stuff a turkey, you must cook it for a longer amount of time to ensure that the stuffing has reached a healthy temperature. Often this results in an overcooked, dry turkey.

When you roast your turkey schmear it with herbed butter under the skin and inside the bird. Instead of stuffing, loosely add a few apples, onions, and herbs that will infuse flavor and can be disposed of later. Once your turkey is fully cooked according to your recipe and thermometer, be sure not to skip the step of letting it rest. Depending on the size of your turkey, it should rest between 20-30 minutes. If you carve it straight out of the oven, you will lose all the juicy

goodness that you worked so hard two days ago to achieve. It will give you time to finish the gravy and get Aunt Hilda to the table.

When you display your plated turkey, throw a few of the extra fresh herbs around the platter. It will make everything look a little fancier with small effort. When you serve the carved turkey, please pass around homemade cranberry sauce. It’s so easy to make, and can be made many days in advance (email me for the recipe). It would be a travesty to cover that culinary goodness in the canned jellied stuff that still has the tin can lines on its side.

Once you’ve hit this step, sit back and enjoy all the good stuff you worked so hard to make. Your family and friends will appreciate the extra time you spent brining your turkey as they taste its tender goodness.

They may not even notice that the mashed potatoes are lumpy. Most of all, look around the table and thank God for those loved ones surrounding you. God bless you all and Happy Thanksgiving!

hanksgiving has traditionally centered around one dish: turkey. In fact, it’s foretold that the English colonists brought “geese and other birds” to the legendary feast. When Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday, pioneers would hunt turkeys for their families. But it’s 2021, and turkey is so last year. I’m not asking you to spare the bird (that’s the president’s job), but instead show some flare and pair the turkey with unforgettable side dishes. If you make the mashed potatoes and stuffing special, your guests will be amazed at your attention to detail and modern sensibilities. Here are five side dishes that you’ll be thankful for:

Balsamic Brussel Sprouts

Ingredients: ● 1 pound of brussel sprouts, cleaned and quartered ● 3 cloves of garlic, crushed ● 1 hearty splash of balsamic vinegar ● 3 tbsp of maple syrup ● ¼ cup of brown sugar ● 2 tbsp of soy sauce ● 2 tbsp of salt ● ½ cup of crispy onions Once you’ve cleaned and quartered the sprouts, pour them into a large saute pan (heated with a splash of olive oil). Saute over medium heat until fully cooked and slightly burnt.

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine soy sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, syrup, garlic and salt. Cook until the sauce is thick and mixed thoroughly (use a whisk).

Pour the glaze over the cooked sprouts and mix until all the sprouts are evenly coated.

Place sprouts onto a serving platter and top with crispy onions. Enjoy!

Herby Traditional Stuffing

Ingredients: ● 1 pound of French bread, day-old, white ● 2 large onions, diced ● 8 cloves of garlic

3 cups of chicken stock 2 large carrots, chopped ● 1 cup of butter, melted ● 1 cup of bacon fat, melted ● 2 tbsp of rosemary ● 2 tbsp of thyme ● 2 tbsp of salt ● 1 tbsp of parsley ● 2 tbsp of salt ● 2 tbsp of pepper ● 2 tbsp of garlic powder ● 2 tbsp of onion powder Tear bread into bite size pieces and place in a Dutch oven.

In a large mixing bowl, combine butter, bacon fat, and spices.

In a medium pan, saute onions and carrots until they are soft. Add garlic and turn off heat when the garlic is fragrant.

Pour the contents of the bowl and pan into the Dutch oven. Distribute evenly.

Cover and bake in a 400 degree oven for 45 minutes. Serve warm! ● ●

Super Sweet Potato Casserole

Ingredients: 3 pounds of sweet potatoes, cubed ● 1 macintosh apple, cubed ● 2 cups of brown sugar ● 2 tbsp of cinnamon ● 1 cup of mini marshmallows ● 1 cup of chopped pecans ● 2 cups of butter, melted ● ¼ cup of maple syrup ● ½ cup of heavy cream ● 2 tbsp of vanilla extract Clean, peel, chop and boil potatoes until they are soft. Using an electric mixer, combine potatoes, apple, butter, maple syrup, brown sugar, cinnamon, heavy cream, and vanilla extract. Mix until thick and smooth.

Pour mixture into a rectangle glass pan. Pour pecans and marshmallows on top. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 30 minutes until nuts are fragrant and marshmallows are melted. Enjoy! ●

Ingredients: ● 1 box of penne or rigatoni ● 2 pounds of ground beef, grass-fed ● 1 cup of cubed butternut squash ● ½ cup of carrots, shredded ● 1 cup of walnuts, chopped and baked ● 1 cup of parmesan, shredded ● ½ cup of basil leaves, torn ● 1 lemon, squeezed ● 1 green apple, diced ● 3 cloves of garlic, crushed ● ½ cup of melted butter ● 2 tbsp of salt ● 2 tbsp of pepper Boil water and cook pasta al dente.

Pour in a large mixing bowl and set aside.

Roast butternut squash, apple, and garlic in a 400 degree oven for 25 minutes.

Roast chopped walnuts for 5 minutes at 400 degrees.

Saute beef over medium heat until brown and set aside.

In the mixing bowl with the pasta,

Ingredients: ● 3 cups of all-purpose flour ● 2 cups of white sugar ● 1 cup of brown sugar ● 3 large eggs ● 2 tbsp of salt ● 2 tbsp of baking powder ● 2 tbsp of vanilla extract ● 3 tbsp of cinnamon ● 1 stick of butter, melted ● 2 cups of molasses ● 3 tbsp of ginger, freshly grated ● 1 tbsp of nutmeg ● Powdered Sugar Sift flour and add to a medium-sized mixing bowl. Add salt and baking powder and stir.

In a large bowl, mix (using an electronic mixer) sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla until thick and creamy. Slowly add dry ingredients, stirring on low speed and adding in batches.

Add cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and molasses. Mix thoroughly.

Pour batter into a nonstick bread pan and bake at 400 degrees for 6070 minutes. Let cool completely, and top with powdered sugar.

The Power of Friendsgiving

I

f you haven’t heard of Friendsgiving, be prepared to get excited. Imagine being surrounded by your closest friends, eating food you all love, minus the pressure to be fancy or traditional. You mayconsider it Thanksgiving with a twist: Friendsgiving.

What is Friendsgiving, you ask? It is a stress free/family free meal with your closest friends.

According to Merriam-Webster, the term “Friendsgiving” was first seen in and around Twitter in 2007. It blossomed a few years later and now the feast of friends is usually held the weekend before Thanksgiving but not always. You can serve traditional Thanksgiving fare or tapas or pizza.

The beauty of this meal is that everyone brings a little something, the wine is served and nobody is feeling the pressure of the holidays. Some people are even exchanging traditional Thanksgiving for this laidback and lesser known cousin. Can you blame them?

Though many feel that Friendsgiving came into fruition because of the wildly popular TV show Friends.

The truth is, that it didn’t. The image of Monica with a turkey on her head definitely comes to mind. And the entire Friends cast joining together to avoid other familial obligations does seem like it is the beginning of the trending tradition but this has been quietly going on for more than a decade.

It all starts with gathering your friends and asking them to try something new. Friendsgiving doesn’t care whether you are a teenager or a senior citizen. You can simply invite your best friend or dozens of your buddies. Make sure to have a specified date and time in mind. Another important aspect of Friendsgiving is that the meal is provided by everyone, potluck-style. Determine who is in charge of the mashed potatoes, pies, and other yummy treats. Turkey is optional, and can be expensive and unwieldy to cook. Try opting for a rotisserie chicken or vegan alternative, and you’ll save time and money.

I’ve attended three Friendsgiving celebrations, each one different from the other. My first was in college, where our house of six girls collaborated with a house of eight boys.

At 11:45pm, we walked a mile in the dark through the woods, carrying our dishes and a set of silverware (the boys didn’t have enough for everyone) all the way to the boys’ house.

at my studio apartment, while I was in law school. My best friend Angelina and I invited three friends each.

Angelina came over around 8 in the morning, and we cooked all day. None of our guests were able to bring food,

We cracked open beers and sat on the floor, circling a massive, slightly-burnt turkey and six sides. Our friend Dan took pictures, in part for his photography class, and we played mind games while we ate. We still have the pictures to treasure today.

My second Friendsgiving was technically what we called Officegiving. It was my first year out of college.

I had four solid friends at work, and we decided to celebrate together on the Monday after Thanksgiving, at the office. We brought in huge tupperware containers of leftovers and scheduled lunch at the same hour.

Using my desk as a table, dipping our forks into a variety of microwaved creations, like mac and cheese, biscuits, pumpkin bread and of course, turkey. We awed at each other’s food and swapped recipes. Officegiving was a big success.

My third Friendsgiving was held

so the burden of the meal was on us.

Angelina carried a twenty-pound frozen turkey up three flights of stairs.

She used a hairdryer to thaw the bird while I peeled potatoes, chopped carrots and baked a pecan pie. Our friends arrived that evening with bourbon and cider, and we sat around my coffee table, propped up on law school textbooks. We were happy, full and red-faced from the drinks.

I am thankful for my family and the sweet memories of past Friendsgivings. It reminds me to be grateful for the little things, like college shenanigans and being able to take lunch at the same time as your coworkers.

So consider the good parts about your life, even if they aren’t perfect.

Jessica Beyer are coming together this year to provide an opportunity to do just that. Allie, owner of Grace and Glory Yoga will be hosting a small business vendor event in Galloway from 10am-3pm. Across town, Jessica will be doing the same at her studio, Zen Landing in Mays Landing from 10am-4pm.

The duo is encouraging shoppers to plan for a full day of shopping local by attending both events on Saturday, November 27th. In the spirit of community over competition, the two yoga studio owners are celebrating each other and all the local businesses that are slated to be featured at their respective events.

“We’re both super passionate about community and collaboration.

Giving small businesses a place to gather without competition can create a new culture locally," shares Nunzi.

Zen Landing, which opened in June 2020, will be featuring local artisans and business owners, as well as highlighting the surrounding brick and mortar shops in town.

The list of creators at the two Small Business Saturday events is abundant. Attendees will be invited to shop from candle makers, potters, clothing designers, local artists, jewelry makers, authors, and so much more.

How the Philadelphia Eagles Landed the First Ronald McDonald House

I

n this season of giving, lets take a moment to celebrate the Eagles!

No, they are not have a good season. Let's be thankful for the franchise that helped create the Ronald McDonald House, which launched in Philadelphia in 1974.

In 1969 Eagles tight end Fred Hill learned that his 3-year-old daughter, Kim, had been diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia. Doctors estimated she had six months to live. So the Hill’s spent the better part of the next three years driving back and forth from South Jersey, where they lived, to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in North Philly for her treatment. The original six-month timeline doctors gave Kim proved to be wrong. She spent three and a half years receiving treatment.

It was a long, grueling process and it weighed heavily on her and her family.

Under marching orders from owner Leonard Tose, then-GM Jim Murray visited St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children to speak with Kim’s doctor, Dr. Lawrence Namain. He was armed with exactly two questions:

What did the hospital need and how could the Eagles help?

Namain said that they needed everything. Their facilities were 100 years old. The hospital was relocating from 18th and Bainbridge Street to where it stands today at 34th and Civic Center Boulevard. However he also said that there was a woman named Dr. Audrey Evans, the head of oncology, that he should check in with.

Evans was extremely direct and handed Murray a grocery list of necessities.

She didn’t care about football or the Eagles. She didn’t even own a TV. When Murray suggested they meet at the Spectrum so the team could present her a check, she had no idea where he was talking about.

Her life was dedicated solely to the kids she cared for.

After Evans accepted the team’s check to jump-start improvements at the old CHOP in 1974, she said to then GM Jim Murray: ‘… ya know what else we need?’

They needed a safe haven. CHOP needed a place where families could

comfortably stay while their children are in the hospital being treated for cancer. Parents needed a place where they could support each other emotionally through the turmoil of a child with a disease that was considered a virtual death sentence. Evans asked Tose for $50,000 to fund two new rooms. When Tose asked, “how much for a whole floor?”

There was no hesitation in her answer.

It would cost a million dollars.

“Then we’ll put in a million,” Tose told her. “… and Jimmy will raise it.”

The Eagles were committed to helping, they just needed to find a way to pay for it.

So Murray worked it out with his friend that worked at a local ad agen-

cy with McDonald’s, Don Tuckerman.

The Shamrock Shake was their next upcoming promotion. The proceeds from the shake would go toward the establishment of the first Ronald McDonald House.

It was perfect. Green shake. Green money. Green Eagles. Murray asked that 25 cents per shake go to help fund Evans’ vision of a home for families.

Regional manager of McDonalds Ed Rensi called Murray about the 25-centper-shake going rate. Murray wondered if he’d asked for too much. Rensi said to him: ‘If we just give you all the money, can we call it the Ronald McDonald House?’

Murray said that if they gave all the proceeds over, McDonalds could name anything they wanted for all he cared.

Regional sales went well. A few months later, Murray and the Eagles were able to buy a seven-bedroom fraternity house that they renovated.

On Oct. 15, 1974 he first Ronald McDonald House was dedicated.

Today, over 350 houses serve 60 countries. Ronald McDonald House Charities helps more than five million families a year.

A Little Bit Of History: Ocean City

O

n the graceful french curve island just across the water from Somers Point can be found, by their own motto, “America’s Greatest Family Resort.” The island stretches seven miles from bow to stern and sports award-winning beaches, a funfi lled boardwalk, a solid family-focused philosophy, and an interesting history of how it became that way.

Prior to the arrival of the fi rst European explorer, Cornelius Jacob, in 1611, the barrier island was already a summer destination for the native Lenni-Lenape people of the area. It was their summer seafood hunting ground.

The Lenape clans would paddle down any number of tributaries to what is now Ocean City to gather oysters, crabs, clams and fi sh to add to their clan’s stores of food. The hunting party’s return was traditionally met with a summer feast, which added a sense of celebratory anticipation to the tasks of gathering and preserving the food.

To the north, south, and east of the Ocean City area, European colo-nization had begun to take root. By mid1600’s, the whaling companies were well established.

The sight of tall ships off the coast would become a more and more familiar sight for the summer Lenape foraging parties. In 1693, the Somers Family established Somerset Plantation and the settlement of Somers Point, which included the nearby islands.

The only access to these

islands was by boat, so the islands were used primarily as a grazing area for domesticated herds. However, this did not stop the locals from traveling across the water for a picnic on the beach now and then.

Circa 1700, a whaler named John Peck began to use the island as a whaling staging and processing station. This was the only industry on the island for many decades, owing to the lack of accessibility to this

stretch of land. In time, the northern head of the island became known as Peck’s Beach.

A ferry system was set up to shuttle workers and goods to and from the mainland, but the island was still relatively isolated; an undisturbed gem sitting just out of reach. That is until four Methodist ministers met under a cedar tree in 1879, purchased the property, and decided to turn it into a Christian retreat and camp.

Development of the area came quickly. It was an elaborate plan, complete with lots set aside for businesses, cottages, and hotels.

Within the first 5 years, a school, a bridge, and a boardwalk had been built. The railroad was added soon after. It became a boom-town with the population increasing 230% between the years of 1890 and 1910.

By the mid-1900’s, people were living year round on the island and the city began to take its present form.

Memories of Thanksgivings gone awry

y husband always says he knows when I'm cooking because the smoke detector is going off. It's only a slight exaggeration for two reasons: I am a terrible cook and our smoke detectors are way too sensitive (in my humble opinion).

It seems like yesterday I was a young mother cooking my first Thanksgiving dinner. Bob and I were looking forward to hosting our parents and grandparents in our home for the yearly feast. With three babies under three years old demanding my attention, I prepared as well as any new mom in the midst of chaotic baby life could prepare. I made sure I spent enough at Shoprite to snag my free turkey as I gathered ingredients for the other dishes I’d be preparing. I just knew that I was going to make a memorable meal!

It certainly was memorable. Unfortunately, not in the way I had hoped.

My first rookie mistake was not thawing the turkey long enough. I spent hours wrestling with a half-frozen bird to get that nauseating bag of giblets out of the center.

Eventually, the turkey was buttered, seasoned, and ready for the oven.

Several hours and two smoke alarms later, my turkey came out dry, crispy, and downright BURNT. I cried. All that work for a burnt turkey! God bless my husband though.

He helped me scrape off the charred areas while assuring me that "no one would notice."

My family was so gracious as they pretended to love it. I was starting to

relax and enjoy my meal until I took a bite of my turkey and felt something crack in my mouth. To my astonishment, out came a chip of my tooth!

The next day in the dentist's chair, I relayed the story about my burnt turkey breaking my tooth. The dentist burst out laughing and proceeded to tell everyone in the office. By this point, I could laugh at myself and be thankful my tooth was a relatively easy fix.

For decades to come, I hosted Thanksgiving and prepared all the side dishes, leaving the turkey cook-

ing to my mother. There was no way she was taking another chance on my culinary skills with something so important. It was a job I was more

than happy to relinquish!

Now, twenty years later, my adult daughters have taken over Thanksgiving meal preparation and it never tasted better! The torch has been passed.

Whether you love to cook or like me, it's not your thing, Thanksgiving is about so much more than the turkey. It's a toast to family, traditions, both new and old, and an invitation to express our gratitude for all our blessings. Here's to a Thanksgiving full of perfectly cooked birds and happy memories.

Ocean City’s Downtown ‘Earlier Than the Bird’ Celebration Set for Saturday

he early forecast calls for clear weather on Saturday – ideal conditions to kick off the holiday season along downtown Asbury Avenue. In Ocean City, that means shopping in your pajamas for the Earlier Than the Bird celebration.

The annual downtown shopping extravaganza takes place 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 20 – the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Anybody (pajama-clad or not) can take advantage of early-bird shopping specials at stores on Asbury Avenue between Sixth Street and 14th Street.

But free turkeys will be awarded to the bestdressed, and shoppers can text in to win gift certificates and prizes from downtown merchants.

Remembering Stainton’s Department Store

A Look Back

n April 13, 1913, Howard S. Stainton bought Emma Morris Corson’s dry good store at 808 Asbury Avenue. It was the beginning of what would become the largest department store in Cape May County.

The store was always busy in the summer, but thanks to Stainton’s business sense, the store did well the rest of the year. He bought 810 Asbury Avenue in 1916 to meet the demands of the people.

Christmas season was as busy as summer as people came to shop.

Stainton advertised, “”Weatherman predicts that cooler weather will follow. Warm underwear, hosiery, etc. will be needed. Our stock offers an unusually fine selection.”

The December 7, 1922 Ocean City Sentinel advertisement reported the

hile you are getting cozy indoors under your fluffy blanket, don’t forget about our feathered-friends outside. If you’ve slacked off from filling your bird feeders, this is the time to keep a ready supply of fruits, nuts, and seeds for birds visiting your garden.

Though our Shore Local area is a well-known home to migratory birds in the warmer months, many birds are also year-round New Jersey residents. As the days grow colder, insects and fresh berries become scarce and winged-visitors to your yard will appreciate a tasty meal. During these colder, barren months, offer birds high energy, high fat food such as suet, peanuts, peanut butter, and black-oil sunflower seeds. One of my favorite foods to provide songbirds is a high quality fruit and nut mix. You will want to give some thought to the placement of these feeders since squirrels (who sing quite a different song) also love nuts and sunflower seeds and will empty your feeder in minutes. Using a bird feeder that attaches to your window with suction cups can be a great way to deter squirrels and make the seed last a bit longer. These feeders also allow you to enjoy birds up close and personal, making them great fun for kids. I also like to fill my bird feeders with safflower seeds. These seeds attract many birds, but squirrels are not fans of safflower, making it the

perfect bird seed. Most reputable brands of bird seed will supply a chart on the back of the package, showing which birds will be attracted to specific seeds. Experiment using different types of food to attract various birds to your garden. Just be sure to keep your feeders filled once you start.

You don’t want to leave your guests with an empty plate. They, in turn, will reward you with their songs and friendship through the cold days of winter.

Being Thankful This Thanksgiving

A

s Thanksgiving approaches, I can't help but think of a radio interview I heard. The host was having a conver-

sation with a veteran who lost all of his limbs in combat, both his arms and both his legs. During the interview, the soldier casually shared, “And you know, I was one of the fortunate ones.” As he tried to continue, the host stopped him and said, “Wait a minute!” The host insisted that that was an amazing testament to this veteran's outlook on life. “ I don’t know where life has you right now. You may be at the top of your game or in the valley of despair.

The world around us seems to be out of control on so many fronts. Uncer-

tainty has become a daily expectation for many of us. However, it could be worse. It’s true that there are a lot of situations and circumstances we have little to no control over in life.

However, there are so many more that we do. I like what author and pastor Chuck Swindoll says, “I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.”

Every morning when my feet hit the floor, I do my best to set a course for my day by reflecting on these three concepts. ● I don’t want to take anything for granted, especially the little things. After all, it’s really the little things that add up to make the big things in life. ● I’m learning to look for ways to add value to others. In other words, I want to be intentional about looking for ways to say something kind or encouraging. I try to use my gifts and abilities to help someone else along on their journey. I try to make someone smile or feel appreciated for who they are. ● I remind myself that no matter where my day or circumstances

take me, there is always something to be thankful for. My wife and I picked up a sign to hang in our home that says just that. The sign simply says, “There is always, always, always something to be thankful for.”

Interestingly enough, I find that the more I take the focus off of myself and onto others, the more aware I become of the blessings I have in my own life. As you approach Thanksgiving this year, jot down what you’re thankful for. You might be surprised at the length of the list.

Then look for ways to be a blessing to others.

Introducing award winning artist Chanelle René

n Friday November 12th The Ocean City Arts Center held a reception for their annual Juried Art Show. More than 200 pictures were submitted in art forms from pastel to watercolor to oil and acrylic and various forms of mixed media. The show featured a dazzling array of art that captures life in Ocean City to life across the great American landscape.

The reception included opportunities to chat and chew with the various artists in the show. The Ocean City Arts Center also awarded hundreds of dollars in prizes for various artists.

The winner of The Blue Ribbon Best In Show is artist Chanelle René for her painting VISIONARY. Chanelle René will also be a part of The BoardWalk Art Wall exhibit being curated at The Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University and sponsored The Atlan-

tic City Arts Commission. That show will be on display starting Friday December 10th. Chanelle René spends hours painting almost everyday so I was glad that she was able to take time for this exclusive interview.

SLM-Where are you located?

Chanelle René -I was born in West Cape May, NJ and at 3 moved to Delaware. But my connection to Cape May remained throughout my life. My grandparents and my uncle’s families lived in West Cape May year round. I spent my summers and every holiday at my grandparents’ house. I have very fond memories. After living in other places as an adult, I returned to West Cape May and currently live in Rio Grande, NJ. I’ll always consider West Cape May my home.

SLM-Tell us about your journey as an artist?

Chanelle René- The majority of my career was in marketing and communications but I’ve always had a nudge to work independently. Such as working as a Pilates instructor and health coach. Eventually I found myself doing creative practices as an outlet like jewelry design and fiber arts. Then I started painting. I connected to painting more than anything else and started to develop my skills. I’ve been

SLM-What is your art saying to the world in general?

I’m known for painting “soulful portraits” that capture predominantly black women, the journey of self-discovery, and the freedom that comes from being true to self. I’ve always been fascinated with faces and the exquisite beauty that emanates from the soul of every woman. As a woman of color, diverse feminine beauty is central to my work. Portraitures allow me to quietly whisper the deepest desires of the soul. Bringing forth a full spectrum of modern beauty, unbridled and free, in a world of endless possibilities.

SLM-What is your award winning painting VISIONARY saying specifically?

Chanelle René- Visionary” has a powerful story. I love painting soulful portraits that reflect diverse beauty from the inside out. I saw beauty, strength and determination in the reference model I used in this work.

And while you can't see her gaze she is looking out and locked in to the vision and possibilities she sees for herself.

SLM-What would be your advice to artists that want to share more with the world at large?

Chanelle René- Keep painting or whatever type of art you create. You’ll have work you’ll love and work you’ll hate but always remember your why.

It will help you move forward and share with the world why your work is important.

SLM-Tell us about the process of creating the painting Visionary.

Chanelle René- The funny thing

is that Visionary started as a study in painting tonal values in black and white. The reference model was so strong and powerful I couldn’t wait to paint her. I started with spray paint to create contrast and depth by allowing it to peek through. I worked in acrylic paint and finished with oils to bring the painting to life.

SLM-What led you to The Ocean City Arts Center show?

Chanelle René- I was familiar with the show however a few people familiar with my work recommended applying as well. The Ocean City juried art show is my second exhibition along with an international virtual exhibition.

SLM-How did it feel when you heard you won BEST IN SHOW? Chanelle René- When I heard my name it felt surreal. But I’m extremely honored to have my work recognized among so many other talented artists.

SLM-What can we expect from Chanelle René in the future?

Chanelle René-I’m currently working on new works including a collaboration highlighting the first black women in Negro League Baseball with artist Sydnei SmithJordan.

In addition, I’m exploring my own black Cape May history to create new works for my upcoming collection.

n approximately 3.5 square miles, Ventnor City is teeming with businesses. Everything from beauty to liquor to delis, doctors to lawyers to real estate, yoga to boutiques to bikes, Ventnor truly has it all. However, it does not have a business association. Ventnor has had business associations in the past, but for various reasons, they have never been able to stick. Brenda Dowd, of Makt Arts, is hoping to change that.

Dowd, along with other business owners, held a fact-finding meeting last week to begin the process of forming a business association. There was an enthusiastic turnout, which included City Commissioners Lance Landgraf and Tim Kriebel, as well as many local business owners.

The goal of any business association is to promote local businesses and the communities they support.

Ventnor’s association would be no different. “Our goal is to build a community amongst owners and to draw people from offshore into Ventnor to help build up our businesses,” said Dowd.

Building a business association will take time and will need to be done in baby steps. The committee is currently looking at other business associations across the region and the country to see how they run.

The town is home to hundreds of businesses, ranging from retail to restaurants. The restaurants alone could fill a directory, including coffee shops, fine dining, and lunch and breakfast eateries. There are also several different business districts peppered throughout the area, including Ventnor Heights. All of this diversity, while incredible to have in a small area, poses a challenge for a business association. “What I think we need in the North Beach area may not be what they need or want in Ventnor Heights,” Dowd said.

“We will need to work together to meet the needs of all businesses.”

One talking point that has come up thus far is the importance of building a strong social media presence that would help promote all Ventnor has to offer. A cohesive website, one with a community calendar linking events, has been another idea discussed. The next meeting date has yet to be determined.

A former educator, Valerie is a long-time South Jersey resident.

She spent over 20 years in the classroom teaching students English and Writing at the middle school and college levels.

Prior to working in education, Valerie worked as a professional writer and editor in Washington, D.C. Valerie currently resides in Margate, NJ with her husband and two teenage kids. When not walking the beach with her puppy, she can be found teaching yoga on the island.

hanksgiving is just a week away! Do you throw caution to the wind since it’s only one day, one meal or do you make “better” choices for yourself to avoid that food coma? We already have a tendency to be sleepy with the L-tryptophan from turkey alone.

Do we add sweatpants and oversized sweatshirts and lounge on the couch all day or do we sign up for a local Turkey Trot and run a 5k before the eating begins? We have a tendency to make better choices if we start the day making better choices. If I’m getting up to run the boardwalk or teach a Thanksgiving cycle class, you better believe I’m going to make more conscientious choices.

Think about this in advance. Does your fitness center offer a special Thanksgiving class schedule? Being prepared is the only way to tackle something if it’s important to you. Or you might just think, it’s one day and I’m allowing myself a rest day because on Friday, I’ll be right back working on my goals.

While some may fast all day and save up for that one big meal, others may eat a small meal in the morning.

This gives them more control over their appetite. Everyone is different

in their approach. Start your day with a small but satisfying breakfast of egg with a slice of whole grain toast, or a yogurt with berries so you won't be starving when you arrive at the gathering.

Eating a nutritious meal with protein and fiber before you arrive takes the edge off your appetite and allows you to be more discriminating in your food choices. I prefer to fast and load up on veggies and protein. You have to do what works best for you.

Whether you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner or bringing a few dishes to share, make your recipes healthier with less fat, sugar, and calories.

Mashed potatoes with almond milk and no butter, or even skip the potatoes all together and make mashed cauliflower. There is more sugar and fat in most recipes than is needed, and no one will notice the difference if you skim calories by using lower calorie ingredients. Use fat free low sodium chicken broth to baste the turkey and make gravy. Use sugar substitutes in place of sugar or fruit purees instead of oil in baked goods.

Applesauce is a great substitute!

Thanksgiving tables are bountiful and beautiful displays of traditional family favorites. Before you fill your plate, survey the buffet table and decide what you're going to choose.

This makes me actually stop and think about how I’m going to fill my plate.

Like, I always say, “Fail to plan, plan to fail!” Then select reasonable-sized portions of foods you cannot live without. It is Thanksgiving after all and some of these foods you only see but once a year!

Skip the second helping if possible and load up on your water consumption. That will fill you up! If you limit yourself to one plate, you are less likely to overeat and have more room for dessert. Pumpkin pie is one of those once a year foods and pumpkin is good for you, so go for it! It’s low in fat and calories.

Each of us has our own favorites, and some holiday foods are better choices than others.

I usually fill my plate with Turkey (white meat is healthier), vegetables, a roasted sweet potato and possibly mashed cauliflower.

These are examples of healthy choices because I’m not denying myself dessert on Thanksgiving. I also suggest eating slowly and putting your fork down between bites. Spread out the food and fun all day long. Make a plan! Get up in the morning and hit that special 90 minute Thanksgiving cycle class or run that 5k Turkey Trot.

Spend quality time with your family and make better choices when it’s time to fill that plate. Take a walk or a bike ride as a family after dinner or organize a family football game. This

will burn off some of those calories.

Possibly have that pumpkin pie or apple pie dessert afterwards. It would be something to look forward to after everyone has gotten up and out. It may even taste better.

The holiday season is a time for celebration. With busy schedules and so many extra temptations, this is a good time to strive for weight maintenance instead of weight loss. You will be ahead of the game if you can avoid gaining any weight over the holidays. We don’t always need to be so tough on ourselves. Just be aware.

Thanksgiving is not just about the delicious food. It's a time to celebrate.

The main focus should be family and friends socializing, spending quality time together, not just what is on the buffet table.

his is week #2 of six straight weeks of publishing for SHORE LOCAL and I picked that headline because I really do think this might be the BEST time of the year! Think about it, the NFL season is in full swing, the NBA season is underway, the NHL season is up and running, and Major League Baseball is handing out individual awards. Plus, on the local front, no less than five (5) local teams are still alive in the South Jersey High School Football Playoffs.

Since I last wrote, the Eagles went on the road to Denver and played perhaps their most COMPLETE game of the year, and that includes the blowout win they had in Detroit earlier this season. Plus, find out why QB Jalen Hurts did more than just play exceptional against the Broncos, he also influenced team owner Jeffrey Lurie on a big decision. The Flyers beat a tough Metro opponent on the road,

but then lost the second game of a back-to-back. The Fly Guys are home three times this week and also will send two of their own into the team’s Hall of Fame. The Sixers are struggling to find their way with their big man out. However, there’s good news on the Covid-19 front for them. A Phillies slugger picks up some major hardware with more possibly to come this week. Locally, two high school baseball players put their names on the dotted line to pitch in college. In the last three games, the Eagles have rushed for 236 yards against the Lions (win), 176 yards against the Chargers (loss), and 214 yards against the Broncos (win). I know this, whenever Miles Sanders comes back from injury, Boston Scott & Jordan Howard MUST remain a big part of the offensive attack.

However, maybe the biggest play of the day came on defense. Up 20-10 at the half at the end of the 3rd quarter, the Broncos tried to convert on a 4th and 1, and linebacker Davion Taylor stuck his hand in and

punched out the ball from Melvin Gordon. Darius “Big Play” Slay bobbled it, then scooped it up and took it 83 yards to the house to bust the game open and give the Eagles a 27-13 lead after three quarters of play. So far this season, Slay has had two interceptions in a Week 5 win at Carolina, a fumble recovery for a TD in the win at Detroit, and now a fumble recovery for a TD in the win at Denver. Oh yes, he’s definitely living up to his “Big Play Slay” nickname!

One last Eagles item to pass along and that’s about their uniform scheme last Sunday. They wore white jerseys with green helmets and BLACK pants. Normally they’d wear green pants with the white jerseys, but QB Jalen Hurts lobbied team owner Jeffrey Lurie to wear the black pants instead. Hey, who knew Hurts was a fashionista too? After arguably his BEST game of the season, I say let Hurts pick all the uniform schemes moving forward!

In hockey, the Flyers went on the road and handed the Carolina Hurricanes their first loss at home of the season last Friday night. Down

1-zip, Joel Farabee scored his 4th goal of the season to tie things up, and then later in the 3rd, it was Zack MacEwen with his first goal as a Flyer off an assist from former Carolina player Patrick Brown to win it. Carter Hart with 39 saves in net and that easily was one of their best road wins of the season.

However, they couldn’t carry the momentum over to Dallas the next night, as they fell 5-2 to the Stars in Texas. One bright note was the return of Ryan Ellis and Kevin Hayes to the lineup. However, goalie Martin Jones suffered his first loss as a Flyer and the team now sits at 7-4-2 as of the writing of this column.

Ellis played 18 minutes and 45 seconds against the Stars, and initially told reporters in Dallas after the game he felt good. However, now comes word that he has reinjured himself and instead of “day to day”, the Flyers are now listing him as “week to week”. This is not good, as he was expected to be a KEY piece of the defensive puzzle for the Orange & Black.

Up next as I write this, the Flyers are home against Calgary and prior to the game, the team will put Paul Holmgren and Rick Tocchet into the Flyers Hall of Fame. Both guys were very popular players, and it’s nice to see them go up into the rafters. Also, the team held a Flyers Alumni Game on Monday night in front of about ten-thousand fans.

31 players returned for the reunion game as Team Holmgren edged out Team Tocchet 6-5. Scottie Upshall had a hat trick for Team Holmgren. Simon Gagne with two goals for Team Tocchet, and goalie Bill Duffy, a military hero and Flyers Warriors player, was named the game’s top star. Proceeds from Monday night’s alumni game went to the Flyers’ alumni charity programs and Flyers Charities.

In basketball, the Sixers have now lost four games in a row ever since center Joel Embiid had to go into the Covid-19 protocol and miss time. Their 118-113 loss last Saturday at Indiana marked another game where they competed hard, but just didn’t have enough to close out a win on the road. Tobias Harris did his part scoring 32 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in his second game back from the health and

safety protocols, but ultimately they’ve lost four in a row because of their defense. No Embiid and no Matisse Thybulle really hurts the Sixers defensively.

Unfortunately this comes at a bad time too, as they are on a season-long six-game road trip, which continues at Utah before hitting Denver, Portland, Sacramento, and Golden State.

One final Sixers note, and that’s about assistant coach Dave Joerger as he shared that he had been diagnosed with head and neck cancer prior to the loss in Indiana. Joerger will now leave the team for several weeks to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatment. That puts things in perspective big time and certainly thoughts and prayers are with Joerger moving forward.

In baseball, Phillies slugger Bryce Harper has been named the winner of the Hank Aaron Award, as the top regular-season offensive player in the National League.

He followed that up by winning his second career Silver Slugger award, which is presented annually to the best hitters at each position as voted on by the National League managers and coaches. In 2015, he captured his first Silver Slugger and followed that up a few days

later with his first National League MVP award. Let’s see if history repeats itself as Harper is a finalist along with Washington’s Juan Soto and San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. We will know the winner by next issue, so stay tuned!

Locally, five (5) high school teams are still alive in the football playoffs. In Group IV South, #1 Millville (9-1) will host #2 Ocean City (11-0) for the South Jersey Championship. In Non-Public South A, #2 St. Augustine (9-1) will host perennial powerhouse Don Bosco Prep (7-4) for a South Jersey semifinal. In the Non-Public B, semifinals, St. Joseph Academy of Hammonton is 8-2 and has to go on the road to Red Bank Catholic (9-1). Meanwhile, Holy Spirit posts a huge upset win beating Hudson Catholic in the shadow of the Manhattan skyline winning 28-0 last week. The Spartans are now 4-5 and must travel to 8-2 DePaul Catholic next. Finally, last, but certainly not least, someone’s “oh” will go as 11-0 Cedar Creek hosts 11-0 Delsea Regional for a Group III South Championship on Saturday in Egg Harbor City. Good luck to all five teams still alive and keep on winning!

And my last local SPORTS item is about ABA basketball, as the Atlantic City Seagulls are back, and they won in record fashion for their home opener last weekend.

How about 251 points in a 251-69 win over the Horndell Bulls from New York? The Seagulls were a member of the United States Basketball League from 1996 to 2001 but now are back in the American Basketball Association. Thanks, in part to a couple of unique league rules, the Seagulls easily broke the league record of 222 points in a single game. Teams in the ABA execute a full-court press constantly for turnovers because of two rules….a steal in the backcourt that produces a three-pointer is worth

four points. A basket that comes from a steal in the backcourt is worth three points. This is how you get 251 points in a basketball game. The Seagulls led 114-31 at the half! If you’d like to check out a Seagulls game, they play at the Pleasantville Recreation Center and are home next on Saturday, November 28th against the New Jersey Knights at 4 p.m.

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I’ll start with the fact that I signed up for Disney Plus because they were offering the first month at $1.99 and I want to watch the Beatles “Get Back” documentary that’s going to drop on Thanksgiving Eve. However, the added benefit was that I finally got around to watching “The Mandalorian” and I’m now officially in love with Baby Yoda! What a treat this 16 episode series was as actor/director Jon Favreau completely honored the original Star Wars themes while crafting an entirely new story. Just great stuff, and if you haven’t seen it, you really should.

Finally, my girlfriend asked me to DVR the Adele special on CBS the other night titled “Adele: One Night Only” and boy was THAT a treat. I only kind of know Adele’s music, but wow can that girl sing!

Set just outside the historic Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, Adele sat down with Oprah Winfrey for an interview and also gave a mini-concert to some very lucky folks. You can put Adele on the list now of artists I would like to see in concert live.

I was fortunate enough recently to get a third Covid-19 vaccine and my booster shot. If you’ve followed the news lately, you know that this Covid-19 pandemic is not over. It is my continued hope that you stay safe, stay healthy, and when you’re indoors if a place requires you to wear a mask, it’s for a reason. Please keep leading with KINDNESS. tarting on Thanksgiving, over 120 Christmas Trees will appear to magically float on Lake Meone in the center of Historic Smithville. Made from over 50,000 lights, the orchestrated show flashes along with the music. The lights seem to dance and

Winter Wonderland Holiday Parade Returns to Atlantic City on Saturday, December 11

A

tlantic City will kick off the most wonderful time of the year with a holiday-themed parade on Saturday, December 11 at 12 p.m., rain or shine. This year, the parade will depart from Pop Lloyd Stadium (1200 N. Dr. Mar tin Luther King Jr. Blvd) and travel along D r. Mar tin Luther King Jr. Blvd, make a left at Atlantic Avenue, and continue down to South Carolina Avenue where the parade will make a left turn to end at Center City Park.

“After a year of canceled events,

celebrations, and gatherings, we’re excited to bring back this holiday tradition for Atlantic City residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Mayor Marty Small, Sr. “The Atlantic City Winter Wonderland Parade is a family-friendly event and helps mark the start of the holiday season here in Atlantic City.”

The parade is free to attend and free to participate in. The City is currently accepting entry forms from businesses, residents, and non-profit and/or volunteer organizations interested in participating.

Choosing a good funeral home, part 5

nother thing that you as the consumer should do to help them pick the best funeral home is don’t do all your shopping over the phone. It’s not uncommon for people to “call around” to many funeral firms asking for price quotes for specific services. But a funeral is a serious, important event, and sometimes price isn’t the most important consideration. Do your shopping in person as well. You should want to inspect the facility and meet the people who will be making the arrangements for your loved one. When you visit a funeral firm in person, and meet the staff face to face, you feel be more comfortable in your decision.

When you inspect the funeral home, see if it is well maintained. Do the floors need new carpeting, or the walls need new paint? Is the seating padded and comfortable? Is it well heated or air conditioned?

How is the parking? Is the funeral director presentable? Is he/she friendly, open to questions and knowledgeable in his/her field? Is the office staff kind, friendly and courteous? If the support staff is present, are they helpful? Remember you are pay-

ing for service. If you don’t feel completely comfortable in choosing that funeral home, then that is a big indicator that you should look at other firms.

The next item that separates a good funeral home and a great one is in the details. At my firm (which is a Life Celebration Firm) we believe that a funeral should be as unique as the individual. If the funeral firm handles the details well and is tuned in to the family then the funeral director should offer ways to tell the story of the life that has been lived by creating memory tables, tribute videos, commemorative items, collages, involving the family in the service with personal eulogies, photo memorial folders, and more. Personalizing the service makes the event more satisfying and memorable for everyone. If a funeral firm is known for this, then I feel it is safe barometer that this funeral home is not good but great at serving their families!

or some sellers, the negotiation process is a chance to duke it out with potential buyers while for others it is a nail-biting source of anxiety. To plan for and weather the process successfully, formulate a game plan with your agent and determine ahead of time what your goals, priorities, and expectations will be.

What factors into a successful negotiation?

Success is primarily dependent on your goals and the goals of the buyers. In many negotiations, a win-win is both desirable and possible. In other cases, the negotiating parties have widely varying interests and it is more difficult to come to a conclusion that is satisfactory to everyone.

To maximize your chances of a successful negotiation, it is important to remember that flexibility is the key.

The more options you can bring to the table the better your chances of walking away with a mutually acceptable solution.

I have countered the buyers offer, how long should I wait for a response?

Many times the counter offer will request a stated timeframe for response. This could vary from 24 hours to a few days or more, especially during the holiday season or over a long weekend. If you do not hear anything within the requested time, you have the option of moving forward with another offer or checking in order to ensure that a response has not been misdirected.

I have a lot of experience negotiating as part of my job. Why shouldn't I negotiate on my behalf?

While many sellers feel that they are strong negotiators, it is a different proposition to negotiate with your property and your finances. Emotions can take over during even the most trouble-free negotiations, and it is easy to say or do something to under-

mine your negotiating position when you are caught up in your perspective and feelings.

One of the main reasons for engaging a real estate agent or broker on your behalf is to benefit from their expertise in your market and to allow them to bring a dispassionate, professional perspective to the negotiation for your sale. This can help to keep the conversation going and the negotiation moving forward, even when tensions run high.

Everyone keeps talking about a low inventory market. How does that affect my negotiating position?

In many areas, low inventory may mean that you will have an easier time selling your home. It may mean fewer days on the market and can mean a higher price paid for your home, as well. This is certainly a wonderful position to be in as a seller, however, it is important to remember that your home will still need to appraise for the sale price to facilitate financing for your buyers.

Your Real Estate Professional will keep track of market conditions as they change and help you use the most relevant comparable sales to price your home properly for the market. In addition, in the event of a multiple-offer situation, which is common in a low inventory market, your Real Estate Agent will provide valuable insights to help you to choose among the various offers you will be considering.

If someone wants my Home, they will have to give me what I want.

Why should I negotiate?

It is common for Sellers to decide that they will test the market and wait for a more generous buyer to come along and fall in love with their home.

While this does sometimes happen, you may experience some frustration as you wait for that one perfect buyer.

In addition, you may experience the law of diminishing returns since the increased number of days on the market work against your position and suggest to potential buyers that there is something wrong with the house-or that you are unwilling to be reasonable in the event of an offer.

I need a certain price for my home. What can I negotiate other than the price?

You will first need to check with your Real Estate Professional to en-

sure that the price that you need is supported by comps for your area.

Once they have helped you to set this price and you are sure that it is appropriate, it is time to think about the other factors that will come into play during your negotiation.

You may be able to offer a quick closing if you can move shortly after agreeing to an acceptable signed contract.

This may be especially desirable for cash buyers who will not have to wait for the financing and will be able to close more quickly. You as the seller may also be able to provide the buyer with assistance with some of the closing costs if needed or allow some of your furnishings, appliances, or lawn equipment to convey at no additional charge to the buyer.

Once we come to an agreement and go under contract, are the negotiations over?

In many ways, the negotiations are just starting at this point. Following the home Inspection, there will be a negotiation regarding needed repairs identified by the inspector for information only and forego any subsequent repairs before closing.

Should the appraisal on your property come back at less than the sale price agreed to in the contract, there may be another round of negotiations for the difference. You may choose

to lower the price to the appraised value, the buyers may choose to add cash to their offer, or you may split the difference, giving a little on either side.

How do I know that you aren't secretly negotiating with the other agent to push the sale through?

Real Estate Agents and Brokers are sworn to uphold a fiduciary duty to their clients. This means that it is not simply unethical to negotiate against your interests, it would in essence end the career of the agent or broker involved.

They cannot share information without your approval and they must negotiate with your best outcome in mind.

If a Real Estate Agent is representing a buyer who is interested in your property, you have the option to agree to move forward under dual agency, choose to work with a different agent or ask the agent to pass their buyer along to another agent. Even in the event of dual agency, however, it is the agent's responsibility to ensure that the fiduciary relationship is upheld with each member of the transaction.

How to Decorate Your Thanksgiving Table

hanksgiving dinner is the most important meal of the year. You could settle for plain plates and silverware on an undressed table, but consider decorating your table if you have time. Bring the wonder and joy of the season onto your holiday table, and you won’t regret it. Here are some tips to start decorating like a professional stylist:

Choose a Theme

It’s crucial that your table feels cohesive and united. Decide on how you’ll decorate your table, and perhaps pair the theme with the decor around the house. Is your home surrounded by trees? Decorate your table with natural elements, like pinecones, tree branches and autumn flowers. Is your home in the city? Make your table modern with metallic colors, sharp edges and nontraditional food (like seafood, cheese boards, or vegan alternatives). What theme works best for you?

Create a PicturePerfect Table Setting

Make each spot look magical. You’ll want to include a plate, a smaller salad plate, a napkin (preferably cloth), a knife, fork, spoon, and a glass (champagne, wine, or regular). Follow traditional directions in regards to placing silverware.

Then fold the napkin in a unique shape, placed on the smaller plate, which is placed on the bigger plate. Add a special touch, like a hand-written place card, a pine twig, or a decorative napkin ring. For a vintage vibe, use different plates or silverware so that each setting stands out from the rest.

Style a Centerpiece

t’s that time of year Turkey this and Turkey that. Good news! The health benefits of this bird are many. Turkey is an excellent source of Vitamin B and niacin. Light skinless roasted Turkey is low in saturated fat and high in protein. It contains less fat than chicken, beef, and pork.

Stick to the white meat if you’re watching your fat intake. Bake, broil, or grill using broth, lemon, or orange juice if basting.

Ingredients ● 1 onion, chopped ● 1 carrot, chopped ● 1/2 green pepper, chopped ● 1 lb lean ground turkey ● 1 ( 8oz) can tomato sauce ● 1 ( 15 oz) can whole crushed tomatoes, crushed ● 1(8oz) can of mushrooms ● 1/4 cup low sugar bbq sauce ● Pepper to taste ● 8 whole-wheat buns

Directions Sauté onions, carrots, green pepper, and ground turkey in a pan over medium-high heat for 5 minutes. Add to tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, barbecue sauce, and seasonings and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Uncover and cook for an additional 3 minutes or until thick.

Serve on toasted or plain buns.
