New Documentary Spotlights African American Women’s Service in WWII

n Friday, November 12, at 4pm, the Noyes Arts Garage will screen the new documentary “Sweet Georgia Brown,” which spotlights the sacrifices made by African American women during World War II. The documentary has been funded and produced by the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey. Almost 60 minutes of the 90 minute film will air on that day. The film’s director, Lawrence E. Walker, will be answering questions from the audience after the screening.

Walker, also an author, said that he was inspired to work on the film after watching the historic film, “The Tuskegee Airmen.” Most African Americans

Most white Americans remember victory gardens, working in factories, and even serving as sniper shooters, but black women don’t have the same history.

Be Wary of Long-term Snow Forecasts Weather

Y

ou may have heard it's going to be an easy winter.

Don't buy it. However, don't rush to dig out your snow shovel yet either! My advice is the same for those who may have heard rumors of a long, hard winter with blizzards-a-brewing, and those who expect an average one: don’t believe everything you hear.

While winter forecasting has gained popularity over the last few decades, my skeptical opinion has never wavered on its accuracy or usefulness. Now it's true that I dabbled in formulating a December through March forecast in the past, to varying degrees of success depending on the year. While the snow-lover and the meteorologist in me want to have the ability to correctly forecast the amount of snow and cold we'll see

any upcoming winter, the reality is the science is not there, at least not yet, to make that a real possibility.

Yet that doesn’t stop "how much snow this year?" or "how bad of a winter are we in for?" from being the most popular questions I, or any meteorologist, will hear this time of year. Right after the candy collecting concludes at Halloween, thoughts usually shift to the holidays, the chance for a white Christmas, and when will our first snow fall. While I admire the meteorologists who put many hours of sweat and toil into trying to answer these questions, I don't put much stock in any forecast for an entire winter. Let's say I tell you we'll only have 6 inches of snow this winter. That prediction doesn't keep snowbirds from going to Florida. Just like a forecast for 36 inches of snow this winter doesn't lead to a rush on snow blowers or rock salt. However, let's say that lightning strikes, and we get that 36 inches. Does it come in one fell swoop and the rest of the winter is warm and dry, or do we get 9 snowfalls of 4 inches each through a cold winter where there was always snow on the ground? How is that initial winter forecast perceived compared to what actually happens?

When it comes down to it, meteorologists still have plenty of challenges in the 7-day forecast. Heck, even tomorrow's forecast can sometimes offer unexpected surprises. So yes, color me skeptical regarding anyone who around Halloween predicts how much snow we'll see from Thanksgiving to St. Patrick's Day. It's not my lack of faith in my personal forecasting ability or meteorology overall. Science has made so many remarkable advancements of late, even in long-range forecasts. The hurricane forecast each summer and fall is positive proof of that success. However, the complexity of how a winter weather pattern evolves is still beyond the grasp of even the best computer models and best meteorologists out there.

However, that doesn't mean we can't ascertain some sense of the weather picture that will develop this winter. While a forecast for the entire three-month winter season is still a mystery, I attest that there is some skill going month-to-month when tackling a winter outlook. For instance, around Halloween, we can look ahead to November and early December. Come Thanksgiving, the pattern through Christmas can often be read. Then after Santa swoops in, meteorologists tackle the first month of the new year.

Then when football fans are hoping to watch the Eagles in the playoffs, we can try to read the weather through the Super Bowl into Presidents' Day. So instead of one likely inaccurate prediction for the entire winter right now, you will instead get three or four monthly outlooks from me through March. Yes, that could mean four wrong monthly forecasts instead of one busted forecast for the winter as

a whole. However, the Atlantic City in me tells me to play the odds. Besides, sometimes in forecasting, like in life, baby steps are the best way to go.

With all that aside, snow lovers do indeed have a reason to get their hopes up for some early season snow this year, let's say between Thanksgiving and Christmas. After one of the warmest Octobers on record, November will have its shots of unseasonably cold weather. That looks to continue into the first half of December, with the cold shots becoming progressively colder. An active storm track may also try to fire up during this stretch, and if some action along that storm track happens to coincide with one of those cold shots, some early season snow will result. It still involves a "threading of the needle" of sorts for everything to line up just right for early snow in South Jersey. However, we've had a snowy Thanksgiving in the past (1989 comes to mind). Historical chances also go up more into December, although are admittedly still low on Christmas Day itself. Right now, I think around or just after Thanksgiving an East Coast storm could hit.

However, as always, time will tell.

Veterans Day Observances

Post #469 is scheduled to host its annual Veterans Day Ceremony this November 11th. This year’s ceremony will include the installation of seven memorial pavers in honor of military veterans. The American Legion and the Auxiliary will present wreaths at the Memorial Monument. Please join us in honoring our Veterans.

War in Vietnam was winding down.

I didn’t get called into service, and I didn’t pursue a military career. It’s not that I wish I had. However, on days like Memorial Day when we take time to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country or on Veterans Day when we honor those who sacrificed and served, I wonder if I should have done more.

Whether at a ceremony at the town square or in a Sunday morning church service, a speaker or pastor often acknowledges those who served by asking them to stand and be recognized. Every time, I’m moved by the faces. These are men and women, young and not so young, who in the prime of their lives made a decision of service and sacrifice over ease and leisure. This is true especially in times of war when those who answered the call knew it was nearly certain that they would find themselves in harm's way.

For those of us who have not served in the armed forces, there are other ways to contribute to our country and the cause of liberty. One of those ways we experienced earlier this month at the polling place. Taking the time to understand the issues at stake, investigate the candidates running for office, and then cast our vote is one of the best ways to contribute and honor those who have defended that right for all of us. I’m humbled when I think of those who have spilled their blood, lost a limb, or sacrificed years of their lives for us to be able to

have our voice heard. Countless people around the world still live without that privilege.

There is also another way to express our feelings of gratitude and thankfulness to those who have served. This Veterans Day, and any day you come in contact with a vet, try a simple “thank you” in passing. For most of us who have grown up with the freedoms and privileges we have, it can be easy to take those things for granted.

Veterans Day is a good day to pause, reflect, remember and say “thank you.” We would all do well to take note of the words of President Ronald Reagan, who said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream.

It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

The original floorboards were installed around the ice cream case. With the help of some old photographs, she was even able to find the same door trim used back in the day.

Jessie’s of Linwood officially opened on Memorial Day weekend in 2018. In its first year, the café sold ice cream and coffee exclusively. Over time, their lineup of offerings has expanded to include a rotating lunch menu with sandwiches, scrumptious baked goods and a variety of breakfast items.

“We have a little bit of everything going on in here,” Maher says.

Throughout its history, the building has become a central hub for the community, and

that same feeling still resonates today. Several students at Mainland Regional High School’s continuing education program go in for internships three times a week. They also have a few employees who have Down syndrome. Maher says her goal of employing differently-abled people is coming to fruition. “It has been a huge success. We’re a spot where kids come in every day and can see that people who might look a little different than them are actually the same.”

Through the day-to-day operations of fixing broken machines and

faulty faucets, Jessie’s dedicated staff has made it through the most challenging of days, even the pandemic. Maher is grateful for the support of the community. “Any day that you come in here, it is a positive place for both the customers and staff. I’m super thankful for everybody that has wanted to be part of it.”

Remembering the Trains into Ocean City 1884 to 1981 A Look Back at Ocean City

ovember 24, 1884, was a special day in Ocean City's history. It was on that day the West Jersey Railroad began operating trains from Sea Isle City into Ocean City.

William B. Wood, one of the city's founders, celebrated the event writing: "The snort of the iron horse and the shrill whistle of the locomotive will hereafter be familiar to our people."

The shrill whistle ended in 1981, but 40 years later there are signs of the railroad. The most visible is the train station built in 1898 on 10th Street and Haven Avenue. The following information is on the plaque attached to the historic building.

The Ocean City Transportation Center originally was constructed as Ocean City 10th Street Station by the South Jersey Railroad. The South Jersey was one of two railroads that served Ocean City. The other was

the West Jersey and Seashore Railroad which established service along West Avenue in 1884.

In 1933, after several acquisitions by larger railroad companies, the rival railroads merged into the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines (PRSL). After years of declining patronage, NJ TRANSIT discontinued passenger rail service to Ocean City in 1981 as part of the elimination of all PRSL service. As owners of the 10th St. Station, NJ TRANSIT converted the former train station to a bus passenger facility, renaming it the Ocean City Transportation Center, and entered into an agreement with the City for its operation. Ocean City 10th Street Station is typical of stations built during the late 19th Century by the Reading Railroad, which had a controlling interest in the South Jersy Railroad. The building exhibits characteristics of the Shingle style. These include decorative fish-scale shingles, hipped dormers, exaggerated wood brackets suporting the canopies, and the cylindrical tower capped

the ticket office. In 1984, the station was listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. In 1995, NJ TRANSIS strengthened its partnership with the City of Ocean City by undertaking an historic restoration of the building using New Jersey Transportation Trust Funds. This project repaired all deteriorated building

systems and brought the Center into commpliance with current building codes and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

Ocean City's annual Train Show will be held December 4 and 5 inside the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mentally Preparing Yourself for Holiday Stress

A

ccording to the American Psychological Association, almost forty percent of Americans admitted feeling increased stress around the holidays. Why? There are several reasons, such as pressure to host the perfect party, shop for gifts, and make memories with people who may have different opinions than you. On top of all that, there’s also financial stress, like adding gift costs into the weekly budget. Furthermore, as we collectively live through a pandemic, we are navigating uncharted waters.

All this stress can even have negative impacts on your health. You could lose hair, have stomach pain, experience migraines, or feel your muscles tense. The good news, however, is that there are steps we can take to prevent and cope with these holiday pressures. Here are three ways to mentally combat stress and have the best end-of-year ever:

Practice Radical Acceptance

Anyone who has gone through Dialectical Behavioral Therapy will know this concept. Radical Acceptance is a way to let go of unnecessary anxiety by accepting the reality of circumstances, and thus being able to move forward. For example, a party host may freak out over not being able to have expensive accommodations for guests, like a cheese board or cloth napkins. They may spend days in agony over how to make the

party look luxurious. If the host practiced Radical Acceptance, they could admit, “Okay, I don’t have the means for a cheese board or fancy napkins. I can’t change that. I can, however, make this party great with other things.”

Once the host gives up worrying about not having the right food or decor, they can have more mental energy to plan the party in a realistic way. Radical Acceptance can be applied to almost any situation, whether it’s holiday stress or any major life change. Try it, and you’ll feel freer and happier!

Set Appropriate Boundaries

If you are a people pleaser like me, you probably have to give up a lot for other people. You might want peace at a holiday dinner, but you worry that a grouchy relative would be offended if you didn’t invite them.

You deserve to stand up for yourself and your desires. Instead of letting other people run the show, speak up and set boundaries on what you will tolerate and what you won’t. If you feel uncomfortable at church, kindly tell your family that you won’t be attending Mass this year. They may be upset, but you will feel much better having made your own choices and prioritizing your well-being. If your aunt requires every relative to buy a gift for her little dog, but you don’t have room in your budget, kindly tell your aunt that you cannot afford a gift

for her dog, or maybe make something small for it. She may be angry, but you’ll be happier in the long run.

When you live your life not living to please others, you can finally be free!

Avoid the “Happiness Trap”

There is so much pressure to be happy during the holidays. Every commercial has happy music and smiling faces, and you may want your kids to be in euphoria over holiday traditions and opening gifts. Debra Kissen, the executive director of the

Light on Anxiety CBT Center, says, “When we try too hard to be happy, we make ourselves miserable.” The overcommercialization of Christmas, holiday travel, and family get-togethers create stress, which often contradicts happiness. Don’t pretend the emotion doesn’t exist. If you are angry that your flight got delayed, feel that anger, and release it in a healthy way (not by yelling at the flight attendant). The holiday season is just like any other time of the year in terms of coming with a diverse array of emotions.

Don’t pressure your family or yourself to be happy all the time. Instead, enjoy the moments that are genuinely jolly, and you’ll love the holidays even more.

Don’t let the holiday season control you. Make an intentional effort to protect your joy and freedom by following these three steps. When you find yourself smiling or laughing with loved ones, you’ll appreciate what the holidays are all about.

Five Game Day Recipes That’ll Make You Feel Like You’re Tailgating From Your Couch Teriyaki Wings

t’s the big day. You’ve got your favorite jersey on and are surrounded by friends who are as excited as you. Your team is winning and you’ve never been happier. The perfect game requires the perfect food. Don’t order boring takeout or heat up frozen munchies. Try something new that’s sure to wow the crowd. Here are five recipes that’ll impress your guests and make game day even sweeter:

Nacho Dip

Ingredients: ● 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese ● 1 can of refried beans ● 1 package of cream cheese ● 1 jar of the salsa of your choice ● 1 lb of ground beef, cooked ● 2 tbsp of garlic powder

1 tbsp of onion powder 3 tbsps of salt ● 1 tbsp of pepper Dump all ingredients into a crockpot. Cook dip on medium heat for six hours, until the dip is melted together.

Enjoy with tortilla chips or pretzels for dipping! ● ●

Ingredients: ● 3 lbs raw chicken wings ● 1 cup of whole milk ● 2 cups of all-purpose flour ● 4 cups of canola or peanut oil ● 2 cups of teriyaki sauce ● 1 cup of soy sauce ● ½ cup of fish sauce ● ½ cup of honey ● 3 tbsp of garlic powder ● ¼ cup of brown sugar ● 3 tbsp of salt Pour oil into a large pot and place on the stove over medium heat. Allow to heat until oil reaches 375 degrees.

Coat wings in whole milk, then in flour. Shake off any excess flour and place wings into hot oil for 7-10 minutes.

Once wings are tan and crispy, remove wings from the fryer and place them on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.

Combine soy sauce, teriyaki sauce,

fish sauce, honey, garlic powder, salt and brown sugar in a mixing bowl.

Toss wings (once cooled) in the bowl with sauce.

Heat again, if needed, and enjoy!

2 tbsp of olive oil 8 cloves of garlic, diced ● 3 tbsp of garlic powder ● 3 tbsp of onion powder ● 3 tbsp of salt ● 1 tbsp of pepper ● 2 tbsp of rosemary ● 1 cup of grated parmesan cheese On a large sheet pan, place fries and garlic cloves. Toss in olive oil and bake for 45 minutes at 400 degrees.

Once the fries are cooked, let cool for a few minutes.

Pour fries in a large mixing bowl and toss in spices and cheese.

Pour into a serving bowl and enjoy! ● ●

Cider Cocktails

Ingredients: ● 1 cup of apple cider ● 1 shot of Fireball whiskey ● 1 cinnamon stick ● ½ cup of tonic water In a glass filled with ice, add cider, whiskey and tonic water. Shake in a cocktail shaker and pour into glass.

Add a cinnamon stick and serve cold.

Dessert Pizza

Ingredients: ● 1 premade pizza crust, cooked

½ container of vanilla icing Toppings of choice: peanut butter, chocolate chips, strawberries, sprinkles, bananas, Bake the pizza crust and let it cool completely.

Spread a thick layer of icing on the whole pizza and add toppings of choice.

Local Chef Prepares Thousands of Hot Meals for Community

I

n 2020, Chef Andre Murphy was honored as Hometown Hero in Shore Local for his tremendous good works in the community.

In the year since, Murphy has not slowed down one bit! In fact, he has served up another 6,000 plus hot meals to those in need with plans to do even more.

Chef Andre Murphy It all began in 2020 when his church needed a new roof, Murphy decided to put his talents to work for a good cause. Murphy's signature dish, Chicken and Potatoes did the trick. "It was my mother's recipe and my favorite growing up," shared Murphy. For six weeks, Murphy prepared

and sold his Chicken and Potatoes, with all the proceeds going to his church, Grace Tabernacle in Pleasantville.

During that summer, Murphy saw that many people were struggling to put food on the table. "Amid the pandemic, in an area that depended on hospitality, folks were hit hard," said Murphy.

Murphy felt called to help. He formed the Community Feeding Tour, taking Murphy's Chicken and Potatoes on the road to feed those in need. In the Fall of 2020, Murphy's Tour 1 fed 3,500 people. Tour 2, in the summer of 2021, fed 2,400 people. Tour 3 of Murphy's Community Feeding Program recently kicked off on Oct 28th with 700 hot meals prepared and presented to frontline workers at Atlanticare on First Responder Day. November 4th marked the first anniversary of Murphy's Community Feeding Tour. Andre has done 80% of the food preparation himself while also working full time as a personal chef at Sacred Missionaries in Linwood. Murphy was born and raised in Atlantic City and now resides in Pleasantville with his wife, Danielle. Murphy has three daughters, a son, and two grandchildren. "My family has been very supportive of my mission," shared Murphy.

What's next for Murphy? "To simply feed as many people as possible, and get more sponsors to make that possible," said Murphy. "We get a lot

Christmas Spirit comes to the Mansion in Somers Point Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

alloween is over and preparations for Christmas have begun. Whether you are someone whose tree goes up November 1st, or you prefer a more low-key vibe, Christmas time is undeniably a magical time of the year. The food, drinks, family, and music are all just some of the elements that give you a feeling like no other at the end of the year. With what has been a difficult year for many and with New Jersey finally starting to get back to normalcy, there is so much to celebrate this Christmas. Somers Point will be embracing the holiday feeling with their Christmas Fair and Market on December 4th from 10 am until 5 pm at the Somers Point Mansion (1000 Shore Rd, Somers Point, NJ 08244).

Christmas markets originated in Germany dating back to the Late Middle Ages but are now experienced all over the world, mostly popularly

in Europe. They comprise vendors who sell food, gifts, drinks, and more.

Traditionally, the markets would sell food such as gingerbread cookies, bratwurst, pretzels, stollen, and Glühwein (or mulled wine, a warm red wine), which are all German delicacies for Christmas time. As the markets increased in popularity, their presence has started to be seen globally, and now we are fortunate to be able to experience them here in South Jersey.

This annual tradition will be making its way to Somers Point this year for a day of fun and excitement including live music, vendors, gift shops, games, Christmas Carols, a chance to meet Santa, and the official Christmas tree lighting at 5pm. Although Christmas markets conventionally follow a traditional German theme, these markets will be focused on celebrating and promoting all things local. From merchants and makers to historical landmarks and the local community, Christmas at the Mansion will highlight all the incredible people that have come together over the past year of adversity to build a stronger and more resilient South Jersey.

Vendors will be offering a wide variety of food and holiday shopping options. Soul Empanadas will be offering their amazing selection of Latin food, including classics such as fish and beef and an assortment of American inspired empanadas such as Philly cheesesteak, buffalo chicken, and chicken parm. They also offer a vegan “beef” empanada which uses impossible meat and vegan cheese. House of Cupcakes will be selling their delicious classic cupcakes along with some seasonal specials such as caramel apple, maple walnut, and pumpkin spice. There will also be hot chocolate and coffee for sale to warm you up as we start to feel the bite from the cold winter frost. This will definitely be an event you want to wrap up warm for, but the food and drink vendors are on hand to to keep you feeling toasty all day.

Pick up some gorgeous handmade Christmas gifts such as baskets, wallets, hoodies, jackets, tees, and essential oils. Scentsy will have their iconic Christmas aroma with a wide selection of candles, natural oils, and diffusers. We all know wrapping gifts is one of the lesser anticipated tasks of Christmas, and fortunately, Santa's Elves will be happy to wrap your gift purchases at the wrapping station. Santa will be strolling around all day visiting and posing for free photographs with children of all ages.

There’s no need to leave your furry friends at home as dogs on a leash are also welcome. Kids crafts and activities will be available too making this

Vendor registration is still open, and this is only a small list of the fantastic merchants who will be available throughout the day.

School and community choirs and dancers will be performing a range of Christmas classics throughout the day.

At 5 pm, the day culminates with an outdoor Christmas tree lighting and Christmas Carols led by a professional father and daughter duo.

This is when you will want to grab that hot chocolate or coffee and enjoy the countdown to Christmas.

Recharge your fall with these fun activities

s it still fall if it’s 80 degrees outside and I’m comfortably wearing shorts? Is it still fall if I'm making sandcastles at the beach instead of getting spooked on a haunted hayride?

Yes, it’s still fall and I have a feeling sooner rather than later we will be hearing people complain about the cold weather and completely forget about this November respite we’ve found ourselves in.

To help recharge or perhaps jumpstart your fall season I’d like to share some of my favorite fall activities (and some that I’m going to try) that you may have never thought of doing or may have forgotten about. It’s important to note that with some clever maneuvering all of these can be socially distanced activities.

Plant fall flowers - chrysanthemums, flowering kale, or asters, just to name a few.

Backyard bonfires - get those marshmallows ready.

Fall foliage drives - this makes a nice solo adventure.

Tailgate parties - the original social distancing event.

Enjoy some apple cider donuts - you

can try to make them, maybe you’ll have more luck then I did.

Corn or hay mazes - if your allergies can take it.

Start a new book- the one that you never had time to read.

Revisit an old beloved book- it’s like rewatching your favorite TV show but better for your brain.

Decorate your space, or give it a revamp - Christmas decorations are calling your name!

Visit a farmers market - We call it the Garden State for a reason.

Go camping - Even if just in your own backyard.

Make spiked apple cider - just be sure to keep it away from the kiddos.

Start a journal - later in life it will be quite interesting to look back on this time.

Margate’s Mega Shopping Weekend to Promote Small Business and a visit from a sign language Santa

T

he Margate business and restaurant districts will be celebrating Shop Small Business weekend beginning Friday, November 26 through to Sunday, November 28 by offering great sales, discounts, contests for shoppers and a drive through town by America Sign Language (ASL) Santa.

Extra Points with Pete Thank You for Your Service

T

his is our Veterans Day issue for SHORE LOCAL and I find myself saying “Thank You for Your Service” to more former military personnel than ever these days. I was just at Lincoln Financial Field for the Eagles game against the Los Angeles Chargers, and it was their “Salute to Service” game in advance of Veterans Day. Remember, Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while in service to our country. No matter what, if you see a veteran over the next few days, I’d like to hope that you’ll do what I do and make sure to say “thank you for your service” to the person.

Since I last wrote, the Eagles blew out an opponent on the road in a surprising way, but then came back home and lost to the Chargers. The Birds are winless at home so far this season, and definitely still a work in progress. Also, there was one moment that happened AT the stadium that I know didn’t make it on TV. The Sixers are off to an outstanding start to the season, even with the Ben Simmons drama still swirling on an almost daily basis. While I write this, another development has come up that could have MAJOR implications moving forward. The Flyers are off to a 6-2-2 start and a lot of the new faces have a lot to do with that. In baseball, two Phillies are in the final three for some major baseball awards. Plus, the team announces a change to start times for certain games. Locally, a longtime radio & print journalist gets a top honor in Ocean City. Plus, an Atlantic City native and St. Joe grad goes into the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame.

From entertainment, I finally watched a Netflix documentary that centers on hockey and organized crime. Plus, the best show on network TV is back! As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I’ll start with the Eagles as they go to Detroit on Halloween and win 44-6 in a score that was both surprising and historic. The Birds finally RAN the football, and ended

up with a season high in points, rush yards, rushing touchdowns and sacks.

In the Detroit win, both Boston Scott & Jordan Howard recorded multiple rushing TDs, marking only the second time in Eagles history that two players have rushed for multiple TDs in a game. It’s the first time that’s happened since Leroy Harris and Wilbert Montgomery both rushed for 2 TDs on 9/14/80 at Minnesota.

On the flip side of the football the Eagles defense finished with a season-high six sacks. Five different Eagles posted at least one sack in the win, and the team returned back to Philadelphia at 3-5 and actually with a possible path to a playoff berth sitting in front of them.

Then, they played the Chargers at home, and lost a close one 2724. Now, I was at this game as a fan, and Head Coach Nick Sirianni certainly came out again trying to run the football. 39 carries for 176 yards between Jordan Howard, Jalen Hurts, Boston Scott & Kenneth Gainwell. Two of the three Eagles touchdowns came on the ground, so the rushing game certainly wasn’t a problem.

In fact, the receiving game was better too, as rookie DeVonta Smith finished the game with 5 catches for 116 yards and a touchdown. No, if I have to put the blame anywhere for the Eagles three-point loss, it’s on Jonathan Gannon and the defense.

Once again the Eagles “D” allows the opposing quarterback to complete 80 percent or more of their passes. Hey, Tom Brady is going to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Patrick Mahomes might

be someday, but Dak Prescott?

Derek Carr? And now Justin Herbert? That’s an NFL record FIVE quarterbacks that have thrown for 80 percent or greater against an Eagles defense that I can only describe as “soft”. Yes, the Eagles lost Avonte Maddox to injury and then Darius Slay had to leave the game banged up too, but I think the philosophy in the secondary is the problem. There’s no “jam” on the receivers at the line of scrimmage. Add to that the fact that the Eagles defensive line came away with ZERO sacks, and that was a recipe for disaster.

The game essentially came down to one drive, where the Eagles couldn’t get off the field. I’m not sure if things would have been different if Maddox or Slay were around, but it killed me to watch it up close and personal from section 135.

Up next, on the road in Denver before the Birds come home to play the Saints, but before I move on, please let me address one moment where I was PROUD of the Eagles fans. Since it was the “Salute to Service” game, there were several moments where the organization honored either current or former military members. At halftime, the show was the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team.

I’ve seen them before and what they do can only be described as awesome. Well, someone forgot to brief Chargers long snapper Matt Overton and punter Ty Long.

They came out and tried to practice in anticipation of the second half and the fans let out a loud “BOO”. Then, Long kicked one practice punt and the disapproval became even LOUDER. The crowd finally broke into a “U-S-A….U-S-A chant” and that seemed to get the

message through to the two athletes that maybe interrupting the military show wasn’t a smart idea!

In basketball, the Sixers are off to an 8-3 start and just had a six-game win streak ended by the Knicks at home. Andre Drummond finishes the game with 14 points and 25 rebounds, the most rebounds by a Sixer in a game since Charles Barkley back in 1987. Drummond got the start because center Joel Embiid has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 and is in the health & safety protocols.

One other Sixers note, and that’s about coach Doc Rivers as he picks up NBA career-win 1,000 when the Sixers win in Chicago on Saturday November 6th. It’s hard to believe that Rivers was once reluctant to the idea of coaching, as he now has 1,000 wins and 707 losses over 23 combined seasons with the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, and the Sixers as I write this.

On the ice, the Flyers are off to a 6-22 start to the season, and through ten games, their defense is much improved. Which is saying something because Ryan Ellis has missed seven games with an undisclosed injury.

After an impressive 2-1 win on the road in Washington, the Flyers seem to be playing a more complete game.

The Flyers were last in the NHL when they allowed 3.52 goals per game last season. Ten games into this season, they are No. 6, surrendering just 2.40 goals per game.

They’ve also had better starts to games, an improved penalty kill, and much better goaltending.

Carter Hart’s numbers are much better so far as he’s 3-2-2 with a 2.41 goals-against average so far and a .926 save percentage. His backup, Martin Jones (3-0, 1.68, .950), has also excelled over his first three games.

One other reason for the Flyers’ early season success has been veteran forward Derick Brassard.

Brassard has now played for NINE teams over 15 NHL seasons, but he really wanted to reunite with Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault as they were together with the New York Rangers from 2013-16. The one-year, $825,000 contract he signed in August is turning out to be a steal!

From baseball comes news that two Phillies are finalists for two major awards. Bryce Harper is a finalist for the NL MVP award from the Baseball Writers Association of America along with Nationals outfielder Juan Soto and San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. Meanwhile, Zack Wheeler is a finalist for the NL Cy Young Award along with Brewers righty Corbin Burnes and Dodgers righty Max Scherzer. The NL Cy Young Award winner will be announced on November 17th and the NL MVP Award winner will be announced on November 18th. Stay tuned.

Speaking of which, you’re going to have to tune in earlier for Phillies games in April, May & September on Monday through Thursday as the team has announced that they are going to move first-pitch up to a 6:45 p.m. start time. That’s only 17 games that will be affected, but I’m

all for an earlier start since baseball games tend to run LONG. On the local front, I have to give a major tip of the cap to longtime Ocean City journalist Tom Williams as the Red Raiders renamed the Press Box at Carey Stadium for him. Williams, 77, covered his first game for the Ocean City Sentinel Ledger in November of 1961, when he was still a student at Ocean City High School. His first radio broadcast was in 1964 and he’s been named the New Jersey Sportscaster of the Year ten times. I’m honored to call him a colleague and a friend, and am very happy to see this.

Just like I was happy to see St. Joe grad and Atlantic City native Jack Corcoran go into the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame. Thanks to Kenneth Cutugno for the picture.

Corcoran, was a two-time District 31 champion and two-time Region 8 champ, wrestling primarily at 215 pounds. He won the state championship his senior year, the first in school history, with a 6-4 decision over Lenape’s D.J. Russo. He finished with 87 career wins. He then went on to play college football at Rutgers and even got some time in the NFL on some practice squads.

Way to go Jack!

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I’ll start with a Netflix documentary about hockey & organized crime that I kept hearing about, but never got time to watch. It’s called “Untold: Crime & Penalties” and it chronicles the tale of the Danbury Trashers of the United Hockey League or UHL. This true story basically combines pro wrestling, hockey and the mob and I was immediately riveted. If you haven’t seen it, check it out.

Lastly, I literally waited to write this column until AFTER I watched the

return of “Yellowstone” on Paramount Network. All I can say is this, if you’re not watching this show, you’re missing out. They had a major cliffhanger to end the previous season, and finally some of those questions were answered in the two-hour season premiere. Creator and executive director Taylor Sheridan has assembled a cast that starts with Kevin Costner, but has so many rich character actors, you simply MUST watch. Not to mention, one of the major stars of the show is the location, in my opinion. The series is filmed on location in Montana, and the views are stunning. I can’t urge you enough to check it out if you’re not doing so already!

I’ll close with another word of thanks to ALL our veterans. Also, I was fortunate enough to get a third Covid-19 vaccine and my booster shot. If you’ve followed the news lately, you know that this Covid-19 pandemic is not over. It is my continued hope that you stay safe, stay healthy, and when you’re indoors, if a place requires you to wear a mask, it’s for a reason. Please keep leading with KINDNESS. Taste the Benefits of Loaded Spaghetti Squash shell is slightly soft. Remove from the oven and cool for 15 minutes.

Cut in half lengthwise, discard seeds and lift spaghetti strands out of the shell using a fork. Place strands on a paper towel to drain. Cook broccoli and zucchini in salted water for one minute. Rinse under cold running water. Drain. Add broccoli and zucchini.

Add cherry tomatoes to vegetables.

Spray frying pan. Add onion, salt, and pepper. Sauté until softened squash strands and vegetables until heated through. Add cheese and toss together.

t's not always easy to slow down and appreciate November. The Holidays are approaching, and with them, the hustle and bustle associated with buying gifts, preparing meals, and scheduling time with family. However, it's a time to look at this month through a different lens, with some of these home safety solutions.

If there is any time of the year to prioritize the safety of your home, it's during the Holiday season. From securing electric outlets to weatherproofing windows to replacing batteries in your smoke detectors, there's a lot to remember, but these tips can help you manage it all.

The holiday season can be a busy time, making it hard to prioritize the safety of your home. But if you take the right precautions now, you can make the most of your time celebrating with loved ones. If you are planning on staying home and hosting guests this holiday season, these tips can help you

to check your safety list twice and feel at ease.

A Safe Kitchen.

Cooking and baking are a central part of any holiday celebration, but food preparation can also be the source of multiple safety hazards. Before you stir, bake, or fry your favorites, consider the following precautions.

Replace Batteries.

It should go without saying, but you must maintain your smoke detectors yearround. It's especially important to replace the batteries before your holiday cooking commences. Many people try intricate, unfamiliar recipes during the holidays, and it only takes a moment for flames to start in your kitchen while you walk away to use the bathroom or turn your back to prepare something else.

Clean Your Appliances.

Use a bit of elbow grease to refresh the interiors and exteriors of your appliances to reduce the risk of fire from leftover grease or crumbs. However, before you do, check that your cleaner is safe for the surfaces of your appliances. Some common agents in all-purpose cleaners are not safe when heated and should be avoided in hot spaces.

To play it safe and help your wallet, make a homemade cleaner, such as a solution of water and white vinegar.

Monitor Your Food.

Food safety never takes a holiday! Check

the ingredient lists on new foods or recipes for allergens that members of your household or your guests might have adverse reactions to. When you are ready to cook, it is wise to invest in gadgets like a meat thermometer to ensure your food is ready to serve. Additionally, after your meal, promptly put any leftovers in the fridge or freezer so they don't spoil.

Electrical Safety.

Many people love to go all out with lights, a tree, and candles to bring home the holiday spirit-all of which can be safety hazards if they aren't set up and maintained correctly.

Spend a few extra minutes during your decorating to keep your pieces from becoming a danger to your home.

Contain Candles The warmth, light, and scent of candles bring joy, and because of that, they are a decorative staple for the holidays. However, at this time of year, there are more than twice as many candle fire calls across America.

To mitigate this risk, invest in sturdy holders, use clear surfaces, and never leave candles burning while you are sleeping or away from the room. If you prefer candles for the ambiance over their scent, consider flameless candles, which provide the same glow without the fire hazard.

Tend To Your Tree.

A Christmas tree can be a central point of decor that you look forward to dressing

up with your loved ones. But you can take a few steps to ensure your tree looks its best without ruining your holiday. For example, keep your tree well-watered. A well-watered tree is less likely to catch fire, and you can prevent a tree fire by positioning it away from any heat sources and by unplugging lights at the end of the night and while you are sleeping or out of the house. Lastly, try not to overload your tree with too many lights and ornaments.

Manage Plugs.

Do not attempt to cram all of your plugs into one outlet. Plan your decoration placement to strategize where you will need extension cords. Check that your lights and other electric decor are a proper wattage for your outlets. It is better to have less decor to avoid tripping a circuit or worse. The best way to mitigate the jumbled look and safety hazard of crowded outlets is to use pieces with rechargeable batteries wherever possible.

Brie Jones, a Leader in Feminine Health

rie Jones of Mays Landing was in her mid-20’s when she began to experience what over 6 million women in the United States silently struggle with - infertility. Brie, now a mother of three, never imagined that infertility would be a hurdle she would face.

As fate would have it, the healing journey that eventually led Brie to a healthy pregnancy would also be the path that launched her career. Brie attended one doctor’s appointment after another, in search of a solution that would bring a new baby into her world. When the doctors began suggesting measures that Brie knew she was unwilling to take, she took matters into her own hands.

Brie dove headfirst into researching medicinal solutions that didn’t require surgeries, pharmaceuticals, or extreme circumstances. Through her research, she landed on the concept of “Yoni Steaming” and other self-healing womb practices. Yoni

steaming, also known as pelvic steaming or V steaming, is an ancient Mayan healing practice popular in India, Eastern Europe, Korea, and Central America. Like many ancient healing practices, yoni steaming is less common in the United States.

Brie began her journey with the restorative practice of yoni steaming in combination with drinking “womb tea,” a tea made of Chinese fruits and herbs that naturally replenishes a woman’s reproductive tract.

Without any invasive procedures or medicine, Brie was able to heal her womb and reproductive system in such a way that she became pregnant with her baby boy six months later.

Infertility and vaginal health tend to be taboo topics in our communities, often leaving women to suffer alone in silence.

Knowing firsthand the healing powers of steaming, Brie set out to break the stigma and discuss these uncomfortable but important topics. She began sharing the products she was making with her friends and family and soon, branched out into the world of social media.

Inspired by the passing of her late brother, and as a way to honor his life, Brie officially launched her business in 2018.

She began sharing her life-changing products with women on the internet. “Yonii Queens,” a private Facebook group hosted

by Jones, became a place where women felt

comfortable discussing womb, uterus, and vaginal health with one another. As Brie led the way, introducing products and educating members of the group, the demand for holistic feminine healing began to rise. Now with over 5,000 women from across the world, the group serves as a safe space for discussion, knowledge, and resources surrounding women’s reproductive health.

In January 2020, Brie took a leap of faith on a storefront location in Absecon. She had been rapidly outgrowing her home office with overflowing packages and increasing demand for her products. The brick-and-mortar location would give women the opportunity to come for an in-person yoni steam, educational information, to buy products, and more.

Before Brie was able to open her doors, the Covid-19 pandemic shut the world down. In spite of the inconvenience, Brie used that time to develop more products, connect with more women, and perfect her craft. She began making chemical-free soaps and washes, specifically for women, and took a training to offer body contouring.

Now open at 130 New York Avenue in Absecon, Love Your Yonii is open Tuesday through Saturday, 12 - 8 pm. On-site, women can schedule private steams, body sculpting

services, or simply come to shop. Regular events are hosted at Love Your Yonii such as the annual Mothers Day event that features massage therapists, estheticians offering facials, yoni steams, music, champagne, and girl-talk.

Brie Jones is passionate about giving back to other women. This week she hosted an event for aspiring entrepreneurs. The Boss Babe Brunch featured discussions and conversation topics centered around launching a new business. The sold-out event was dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness Month and celebrated the beauty and power of female entrepreneurs in South Jersey.

season. A “Head” race got its name from the winner of a race receiving the title of “Head of the River.” I have a special affinity for the Head of the Schuylkill. I competed in the race in 1986, 1989, and 1990 in a double scull. In 1991, 1992, and 1994, I participated in the race in a single scull. I convinced my doubles partner at the time, who was new to rowing, that it would be fun. I emphasized all the traditions of Boathouse Row, the festive atmosphere, and the thrill of competition. Where else can you compete against an international field, including former Olympic

athletes? Of course, at the start of the race, surrounded by all the other boats and athletes, the realization of what I was going to subject myself to over the next fifteen or so minutes hit me.

Perhaps this was not such a good idea. Then the starter called out our bow number, and it was too late to do anything but start rowing.

Moments later, we were in the thick of it. We found ourselves three miles downriver with burning lungs and lactic acid making our legs sore. The next year we did it again. For the following two years, I competed in the Masters Single Scullers event. To give you an idea of the scope of this regatta, in 1985 the regatta was held in one day with 20 events, according to the program I still have. This year’s HOSR ran for two days, October 30 and 31.

There were 144 events, over 7,100 competitors, and 1676 boats. It is the third-largest regatta in the nation.

When I heard that my thirty-something-year-old son, Zachery, was going to compete in the Masters Singles event this year, I knew I had to attend.

Along with Zachery, there were also local rowers from the Viking Rowing Club in Ventnor. Stu Lockhart of Galloway rowed in the Masters singles event. In the doubles event, Chuck Patterson from Ventnor competed with his rowing partner. James Swift III of Margate competed with his son, James Swift IV, in the Father/

son Doubles event.

In Viking’s Masters eight boat, Zachary Eberson, John Kelley, Jim Swift III, Rob Seeger, Hunter Devine, BJ Fox, Stu Lockhart, Tom Madden, and coxswain Paige Whitley competed.

Their boat took second in their event and earned a silver medal. Also competing was Stockton University in Galloway Township. The “Osprey” women raced six boats with the best finish in the Frosh/Novice Fours event, coming in fifth out of seventeen boats. The Stockton women’s team is a young, growing team. Out of only 17 rowers on the roster, seven of them are sophomores and four are freshmen. Stockton’s men raced three boats, a varsity 4, novice 8, and varsity 8. Stockton Coach John Bancheri was formerly the coach at Grand Valley State University in Michigan for 13 years where he led them to six consecutive American Collegiate Rowing Association team championships. Bancheri was ACRA Women’s National Coach of the Year

four times as well as ACRA Men’s and Women’s Regional Coach of the Year. The list of accolades on his way to Stockton University goes on.

In Bancheri’s first season at Stockton, the Ospreys came in fourth in the varsity 8 event at the MARC championships, a significant performance. Later, the varsity eight won their first-ever gold medal at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia. The Stockton crew members are a young group, but with the present coaching staff in place, success is up to the rowers.

I am eagerly anticipating a very competitive 2022.

Stay on Track with your Health and Fitness Goals during the Holidays and not lose sight of all your health and wellness goals? I have some suggestions that work for me and I would love to share them with you. Remember though there is a not "one size fits all" and only you know your capabilities and limitations, so feel free to take away what works for you!

I find support within a group that has common goals. Having a system of support is so important that I can’t stress this enough! People with common interests and goals can be your motivation when you need it. We all need a sounding board because let’s be honest, this is a challenging time of year. Some of us get overwhelmed with all the shopping and the preparation that leads us to possibly stress eating.

Signing up for a challenge whether it’s 6 or 8 weeks prior is a great tool to stay on track and accountable.

A slip up is not failure, just dust yourself off and get back to business. My favorite saying is, “fail to plan, plan to fail!” You must have a daily plan, you must stick to it and be consistent. Why spin your wheels? This is why Sunday is for meal prepping and workouts are scheduled for the upcoming week.

Water is also an important factor.

t’s that time of year. The whirlwind of festivities comes one after the other. Halloween brings costume parties and all the candy you could ever want. Thanksgiving is where we feast with all the delicious trimmings. Then there are all those days leading up to Christmas with all the homemade cookie swaps.

Finally we round the corner and end the year with a New Year’s Eve celebration with bubbly and a traditional meal on New Year's Day to bring luck and prosperity.

For my family, it is traditional to have corn beef, cabbage and potatoes. So yes, we start eating late October and rarely cease before January 1st. This can interfere with our focus and ability to stay on track when it comes to healthy eating and exercising.

What do you do if you want to stay on track

dehydrated can really take a toll on your body, your energy level, your sleep and your performance. You choose, whether it’s half your body weight in ounces, 100 ounces of water or go for the gold and drink that one gallon per day. Everything is not one size fits all like I previously stated.

You may start with half your body weight in water and maybe a month in, you’re crushing that gallon. Water can also ward off any looming hangover from too much bubbly.

Space it out. A glass of champagne with a glass of water. You have to have a plan and a mindset that you can do anything.

You certainly don’t want to undue everything you’ve worked so hard for. Stay on track with your nutrition on the days you don’t have an event. Focus on self-care Sundays where you get food prep done and set yourself up for a less stressful week. I am faithful with this because if you follow this strategy you’ll have 6 to 10 less than perfect days with your nutrition during the entire holiday season. If you were to say just “ forget it” until January 1st, you’ll be looking at about 40 days of completely off-track nutrition. That’s 40 days to do some serious damage and undo some of your progress. Your mind and body will feel so much better thus setting yourself up to

Sleep is very important (7-9 hours) Overall, just remember that the holidays should be about spending time with family, friends, near or far, catching up and socializing. if you can’t resist Aunt Jean’s cookies, don’t beat yourself up over it, just move forward because the next day is a new day and a reason to start over. Just have a plan and it’s ok if your mission goes a little off track.A little bit of effort and strategy will go a long way this holiday season!

Choosing a good funeral home, part 4

hen a family speaks with me, I always break everything down into three categories: Service Fees, Merchandise and Cash Disbursements. Services are what the funeral home provides such as care transport from place of death, embalming, viewing, graveside service, etc. Merchandise is anything the funeral home sells that is needed or helps to conduct the services like caskets, vaults, urns, urn vaults, register books and memorial folders. Then there is Cash Advances which are not the funeral homes charges.

These are things that you typically need to perform a service and the funeral home adds these items onto the contract and pays them for the family as a courtesy. These can include funeral flowers,

clergy and church fees, obituary costs, cemetery and/or crematory costs, etc.

What I want to highlight is that the consumer needs to be informed that all three categories make up a total funeral contract and when you are talking to a funeral firm be aware of this. As I said, I make a point to break everything down when talking to a family over the phone or in person, but some firms will just give estimates based on the service and merchandise only or sometimes even just the service fees in the hopes of getting the client use them. To cite an example, you ask a funeral firm how much is your cremation? You get the answer 2,300.00 but they don’t tell you that the cremation container, urn, crematory fee, and obituary are not included in that quote. You just asked the service fee amount for the direct cremation. Again, be aware of what is included in the price quotes given.

In 2020, impersonation scams were the top consumer issue reported by people living in majority White and Latino communities.

This includes things like fake calls claiming to be from the government. But for people living in majority Black communities, the top report was about credit bureaus. ● People living in majority Black and Latino communities filed a larger share of reports about car buying, banks and lenders, credit bureaus, and debt collection than people in majority White communities We also know that fraud and consumer problems impact communities of color in a different way based on analysis of about 20 FTC cases. This analysis shows that cases where the largest number of people affected lived in majority Black communities involve payday loan applications, student debt relief programs, and certain money-making opportunities. ●

What is not funny is that according to my friends at The Federal Trade Commission “Tis The Season” for frauds and scams. In the car buying market my contact at the FTC has confirmed that sellers not only target people of color to fraud and discriminate against but they go as far as telling their sales people to change the paperwork after the deal. There are scams related to covid 19 and personal protective equipment. And while you are reading this scammers are working on new scams based on everything from culture to current events. So I decided to speak with my friend Rosario Mendez from The Federal Trade Commission in hopes that we can have a fraud free holiday season.

Please tell us about The FTC and your role with Rosario Mendez-I'm an attorney in the Division of Consumer and Business Education of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. I also co-lead the FTC's Every Community Initiative, which has a primary goal of ensuring that the FTC's work to protect people from deceptive and unfair practices reaches every community.

Do you work with and are you associated with The Better Business Bureau?

We’re a federal agency and we work with many partners across the country including the BBB. Part of our mission includes providing guidance to businesses as well as protecting business owners from scams.

Can you give us some background on the current wave of scams and fraud that are being aimed at people of color?

We’ve known for some time that scammers target different communities in unique ways, but new analysis from FTC data confirmed that different communities report different concerns. For example:

My number one advice is to do some research before you buy to make sure that you know what you need, what you can afford, and what questions to ask.
