Beautifying Boxes in Somers Point

embers of the Somers Point Arts Commission recently completed another piece of public art with the painting of the traffic box at Maryland Ave and Bay Avenue in Somers Point. This painting of the public utility box was completed on October 6 and was the latest addition to the Beautifying Boxes Project that began in 2017 with the Green Thumb Garden Club.

The boxes can be seen along Bay Avenue, Bethel Rd and Groveland Ave., Shore Rd and Maryland Ave. and on the grassy area at the entrance to the Rt. 52 Causeway.

The theme of the painting was local shore birds and follows the general theme that was started in 2017 with the Green Thumb Garden Club – local flora and fauna of the shore area. The images on the recently beautified box include the white egret, reddish egret, Eastern cattle egret, cormorant and the

Celebrating Life at The Southern NJ Shore

traditions are intentionally created, while others happen organically. Often, our traditions are centered around beliefs and practices that we aim to instill in our children.

However, sometimes, without planning, holiday rituals take on a life of their own.

For example, Terror in the Junkyard, the haunted hayride in Egg Harbor Township, was always a highly anticipated event for our family as the kids were growing up. Now our adult daughters travel hours to come home one weekend in October to go to Terror in the Junkyard. They tell me, "It just wouldn't be Halloween without it."

At Shore Local, we are looking forward to beginning a new holiday tradition at the Somers Mansion in Somers Point. We are so excited to partner with The Patriots of the Somers Mansion to put on a family fun event.

"Christmas at the Mansion” will be feature local merchants, food trucks, live music, school choirs, an elves wrapping station, kids activities, and of course, Santa. The event will culminate in a spectacular tree lighting at 6 pm on the grounds of the historic mansion. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, December 4th, 10 am - 6 pm for Christmas at the Mansion in Somers Point. Use a pen for that one!

Welcome to Nor'easter Season South Jersey Weather

H

alloween is here, and while we hope Mother Nature gives us a meteorological treat for trick-or-treaters, she's throwing us some stormy treats in the week leading up to candy collecting time.

Not one, but two storms, are churning up the East Coast during the final week of October. Some call them coastal storms. The stronger ones usually get dubbed a nor'easter.

And it's those strong ones that bring a combination of windswept rains, heavy snow, strong winds, beach erosion, and coastal flooding a handful of times each fall, winter, and spring.

Unlike hurricane season, which runs from June 1st through November 30th each year (and we're still officially in that,by the way), nor'easter season is less discrete. The earliest ones are

possible starting in mid-October. Ten years ago this October 29th marks the 10-year anniversary of one of the most notable early season nor'easters, affectionately called "Snow-tober" by snow lovers throughout the Northeast. It's a storm that brought up to 32 inches of snow to parts of Massachusetts, postponed Halloween from Pennsylvania to New England, and brought some rare October snowflakes as far south as Atlantic and Cape May counties. Going further back, it's also the 30th anniversary of the "Perfect Storm" of late October in 1991, although admittedly the result of an interaction between a hurricane and a nor'easter.

Of course, snow isn't usually a trait of October coastal storms, at least not here in South Jersey. But it's the early season of October and to some degree November storms that can have tropical influences. And it's the only overlap between a hurricane and nor'easter seasons, where some storms can have characteristics of both. For example, we saw that with Sandy back in 2012, and with "Nor-Ida" back in November of 2009. As its name suggests, it was a storm that developed into a nor'easter, but it was born from the remnants of what was once Hurricane Ida. Does that name sound familiar? Yes, we had

a Hurricane Ida earlier this year as well, one that was much stronger than the 2009 version and will likely result in the name Ida being retired over the winter, never to be used again.

That brings up a big difference between nor'easters and hurricanes.

Tropical systems are always named, while ordinary coastal storms and even the strongest nor'easters are not. Well, The Weather Channel took it upon themselves to name some winter storms, and occasionally, a name will stick, like Jonas from January of 2016.

But traditionally, storms that come up the coast from now through the spring will not have a name. It doesn't diminish their intensity or impact, although it can sometimes (and wrongfully) diminish the headlines generated before an unnamed storm arrives.

Because nor'easter season isn't as strictly defined as hurricane season, there are no official start and end dates.

Generally speaking, nor'easters can strike as early as early October, like the multi-day pummelling that our shoreline took back during the first few days of October in 2015, and as late as early May, and a rare but powerful Mother's Day nor'easter back in the early 2000s.

Granted, mom's big day has regrettably been a magnet in recent years for otherwise rare late-season coastal storms.

But the heart of the season runs from December through March, and that's when the lion's share of our most memorable nor'easters have struck South Jersey. Because most aren't named, we usually remember them by the month and year they strike. There are too many to reference of course, but let's recall a few: December 1992 was a bad one for coastal flooding. December 2010 dumped 2 feet of snow on much of

the area, informally known as the Boxing Day blizzard as it struck the day after Christmas. January 2016 was the aforementioned Jonas. February 5-6 back in 1978 and coincidentally again in 2010 were multi-faceted storms that ran the gamut from snow and ice to wind and flooding. And those who lived through it could never forget the March of 1962 storm, also known as the Ash Wednesday or Five High storm, remembered for its ferocity and its long duration.

What type of nor'easter season are we in for this year? It's impossible to say, unfortunately. While meteorologists have grown much more skillful in predicting how active an upcoming hurricane season is likely to be, the same success hasn't carried over to forecasting the frequency or intensity of winter coastal storms, at least not yet.

We seldom get through a winter without at least one formidable nor'easter threat, while we can go a decade with no real hurricane concerns. So more likely than not between Halloween and St. Patrick's Day, we'll have to contend with tidal flooding, beach erosion, rain, wind, and perhaps heavy snow. But how often and how severe? At least for now, that's still a wait-and-see endeavor.

Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

our call is very important to us.” NO, IT ISN’T. “This call is recorded and monitored for quality control.” NO ONE IS LISTENING AND IF SO, THEY ARE NOT CONTROLING ANYTHING. “All of our representatives are busy.

Your approximate waiting time is nine hours and fourteen seconds.

If you would like a call back, please leave your number and one of our representatives will call.” NO ONE IS CALLING BACK. Also, this company must sit around in a boardroom and try to find the most annoying music to listen to while on hold. They must say, “I’m fairly confident that after a few minutes of listening to this music, they will surely hang up.” I would al-

most prefer hearing, “The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round.”

If this seems a little jaded, it is because my wife and I have been in customer purgatory for the past thirteen months which just ended in a huge dumpster fire. In September 2020, I finally bended to the pressure of renovating our 25-year-old kitchen with new cabinets, counter tops and appliances; range, dishwasher, refrigerator and microwave. Ever the overthinker, I did my due diligence in researching the best models and the best places to order, finally landing on where I would get the best buy. The stove and dishwasher arrived on the date as promised but I received an email from the store saying that the refrigerator is on back order and I would be contacted with a new delivery date. After a while, I received a date in the next month. Two days before delivery, I received another email with the same news and I was given another delivery date a couple months away. My wife was disappointed but we knew the pandemic was causing problems with production and staffing so we accepted the news with uncharacteristic

grace. Over the course of a year, this happened a total of five times until my temper got short.

After the Appointment Manager set another date for delivery and closed out the phone call with the question, “Is there anything else I can help you with today,” I replied, ANYTHING ELSE, ANYTHING ELSE? JUST DELIVER WHAT I ORDERED A YEAR AGO, THAT’S WHAT ELSE. To paraphrase a Seinfeld line, “you can sell me the refrigerator, you just can’t deliver the refrigerator.”

As the date of the sixth delivery loomed, I was waiting for the next disappointing email but instead I got a call confirming the delivery date and asking if I would prefer the delivery in the morning or afternoon.

I said, I don’t care if it is in the dark of night as long as it is delivered. I was told the driver will call one hour before delivery. No call but the delivery truck rolls up and we scrambled to unload our refrigerator and freezer.

The eagerly anticipated, shiny brand new refrigerator was taken off the truck and it was the wrong one.

My wife and I stood there motionless in complete disbelief. How could this be? Back on the truck, phone calls, emails, profuse apologies and a new delivery date in a few days. Delivery truck comes, food taken out the of refrigerator and freezer. I asked the worker to check the fridge before he takes it off the truck. Wrong refrigerator again.

Phone calls, emails, more profuse apologies and a new delivery date of

October 19. But it gets better.

I receive another email that in addition to our refrigerator, our delivery will include a dishwasher and stove, the same ones that were delivered over a year ago. Coincidentally, I regularly check my credit card activity and that day I noticed an unauthorized $29.99 and $74.38 charge to my card from the appliance store.

Again, I am swallowed up in the dark side of their phone system listening to lobotomizing music and how important my call is.

Af te r being transferred four times, I finally resolved to dispute those charges with my credit card company.

Conclusion: In desperation, we visited a locally owned appliance store and as luck would have it, they had refrigerator we wanted in stock. It can be delivered in a week. Euphoric, to finally leave this chapter behind, we contacted the original company and cancelled the refrigerator. What have we learned? We are always going to attempt to shop local even more than we already do. To shop where we can walk in, speak to a human and avoid spending our life on hold listening to bad music.

he fall season comes to a peak when the leaves change from green to gold, burgundy and orange. The picturesque beauty adds to the funfilled activities that always come with autumn. Hayrides, pumpkin picking, cider sipping and trick or treating always feel magical when surrounded by bright, bold leaves. According to the National Weather Association, South Jersey has one of the latest times when leaves change: the first week of November.

For all the South Jersey dwellers, here are the best places to enjoy the foliage in Atlantic and Cape May County: Washington Street Mall, Cape May Celebrate the season in this beautiful setting. This historic mall has plenty of options for dining and shopping. The brick walkways and colonial buildings pop under the col-

orful fall leaves. Spend an afternoon here, and you won’t be disappointed!

Birch Grove Park, Northfield This park is perfect for relaxing hikes with family. Explore the covered bridge, numerous hiking trails, and playground for your little ones. Put on a jacket and breathe in that crisp, autumn breeze!

Plant Bulbs Now for Beautiful Rewards in the Spring Let It Grow

efore you put your garden to bed for the winter, one last task simply can’t be skipped.

Trust me on this. If you plant bulbs now to bloom in the spring, you won’t regret it. You don’t need a green thumb to be successful, you only need patience. Bulbs are easy to grow; simply dig a deep hole, cover it up and wait.

Like little secrets hiding in the garden, you might even forget where you planted these future beauties. But then, just when you have had your fill of winter, the days get warmer, the ground softens, and the sun warms your soul.

That’s when you will see these little hints of life breaking through the soil.

New life will emerge and you will realize that the garden wasn’t as idle as you thought. For under your feet, an entire world was growing, waiting for its big spring debut.

Some of my all time favorite flowers are tulips. Though they can be found in seemingly limitless colors and varieties,

it’s best to plant the same type and color of tulips in groups of at least five bulbs, evenly spaced. Single flowers in a row can look sparse, but planting in drifts of color will make a visual impact.

If you love peonies, but hate their diva fussiness, try double tulips that resemble peonies. For a bit of drama, plant parrot tulips will steal the show with their exotic blooms. Plant early, midspring, and late blooming varieties of tulips for continuous spring blooms. Of course, planting tulips in your garden will bring uninvited guests to the party.

Though I love most of God’s creatures, squirrels are a glowing exception. The best solution I have found to keeping your bulbs safe from squirrels has been to plant them deep, then add a small square of chicken wire on top of the soil. Weigh the chicken wire down with a large rock or bricks. Once the ground freezes and hardens, remove the rocks and chicken wire. As the flowers begin to bloom in the spring, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes and garlic powder gives tulips a fighting chance against these rascals.

Fortunately, you can plant many spring bulbs that deer and squirrels

normally avoid. Though a hungry deer will eat almost any plant, you have a better chance of preserving your spring garden by choosing flowers that are deer and squirrel-resistant.

Daffodils are the very picture of spring, yet critters usually avoid them. They also come in early, mid-spring, and late-blooming varieties, providing a long season of blooms. Hyacinths, grape-hyacinths, and fritillaries should be safe from critters. For the earliest of blooms, choose winter aconite, snowdrops, or glory-of-the-snow. As the names imply, they laugh at the cold and can bloom right through the snow. Another spring bulb I love is allium. Members of the garlic family, their

scent scares away vampires, as well as most predators of spring bulbs. When blooming, the purple, white, and bluish orbs of alliums look like something you would find in a Dr. Suess book. But every spring, I wish I had planted more the previous fall.

If you feel inspired to plant spring bulbs this year, you still have time. As long as the soil is still workable, you can plant through November. I have been known to procrastinate and plant some of my bulbs as late as December. They do need a period of cold to break their dormancy before the ground warms again in the spring. I find some comfort in life thinking about how some seeds and bulbs must endure the harshness of winter to thrive in the spring.

’ve written about diabetes and its effect on my family in past columns. But just in case you don’t hang on every word I have ever written (my wife doesn’t so why would I expect you to?) my mother and two of my three brothers are type 1 diabetics, as was my grandfather for many years. I have seen how it can have a huge impact on their lives, and unfortunately, the negative results of when the blood sugar gets out of control.

Luckily for my family, some brilliant doctors are there to care for them, and researchers who have developed incredible technology to help them manage their disease. And, lucky for us in Atlantic County, we have Dr. Matthew Corcoran.

Dr. Corcoran is an Endocrinolo-

gist with Shore Physicians Group. Over the past few years, I have picked his brain with questions relating to my family’s Diabetic issues and he has been a source of great knowledge and comfort to me. I have also interviewed Dr. Corcoran on several radio programs to give residents of Atlantic County the ability to hear him answer such questions first-hand.

On a recent program, Dr. Corcoran was joined by his wife, Jody, who is the President of the Diabetes Training Camp Foundation. The DTC program offers one-ofa-kind, life challenging programs to people living with the challenges of diabetes. Through education around clinical diabetes, nutrition, and mental skills, DTC teaches people how to live the life they want to live, while successfully managing their diabetes and not limiting their potential.

The DTC Foundation helps provide financial support for those looking to attend the camps.

The DTC Foundation is holding its annual fundraising event on Friday, November 12 at the Hard Rock Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. This year’s event, titled “Come Experience the Magic.” Come Experience the Magic will feature a special guest, former Philadelphia Eagles long snapper, Jon Dorenbos. Local Boutique Weighs in on 2021 Fall Fashion Trends

eaves are falling and the air is getting chillier, which means it's time to whip out some cardigans and boots.

Autumn is upon us, so it's time to put away our swimsuits and shorts. I love this season because it’s the perfect opportunity to show your style.

Wild Phoenix, a new boutique in Ocean City, knows some things about fall fashion. They opened up shop in May 2021 with one mission in mind: “to empower women to feel their most confident and best selves.” The DeMarco’s, a family of six, run the store in hopes of spreading positivity and kindness. Like the mythical bird, Wild Phoenix encourages rebirth and renewal through fashion.

Kimberly DeMarco, one of the store owners, says that fall is definitely her “favorite season for fashion, and 2021 trends do not disappoint.”

She explains the latest fall trends: “We are still feeling the 90s revival marked by wide leg loose denim and flannels. Warm, neutral colors and

monochromatic outfits are big. The gold jewelry that made a fun comeback is dressing up our laid back comfy looks this fall. And fringe anything and everything, from the black leather jackets to the boho fringe bags we are all carrying! I love it all!”

After Nine Years, Memories of Hurricane Sandy still Haunt Us

a rainfall that reached 11.62 inches followed by the highest recorded wind gusts at 90 mph hours later in Northern Jersey.

Governor Chris Christie issued mandatory evacuations for all barrier islands from Cape May to Sandy Hook, along with all Atlantic City casinos. Their closure for several days, led to a 28 percent drop in casino revenue during November, making the monthly drop the biggest in 34 years.

Tolls on the northbound Garden State Parkway and the westbound Atlantic City Expressway were suspended as the storm approached on October

ctober 29, 2012. If you were living at the Jersey Shore that Halloween week, you were witness to the most historic weather event in our young century.

Sandy, the most intense storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, formed in the Caribbean Sea north of Panama on October 22, 2012. “Superstorm Sandy”, as she was later named, was several storms wrapped together. That combination made her one of the most damaging hurricanes ever to make landfall in the United States.

The Governor announced that clean-up from Sandy would cost New Jersey approximately $29.4 billion.

Days later he revised the total to $36.8 billion.

On average, New Jersey beaches were 30 to 40 feet narrower after

the hurricane. More than 113,000 trees in the state were damaged or destroyed and 22,000 homes were rendered uninhabitable. The state’s Blue Acres program enabled people living in flood-prone areas to sell their homes to the state at pre-flood market value. The homes were then demolished and converted into open space to prevent future flooding along the state’s rivers and bays.

The most tragic loss to New Jersey was the 37 lives Sandy claimed, making it the highest death toll of any storm in the state during the past century. In a positive conclusion, reports in recent years have suggested that Atlantic, Monmouth, and Ocean counties are better prepared for the next major coastal storm due to "infrastructure improvement, healthy economies, and strong finances." We can only hope.

Linwood’s School Installs Buddy Bench

ast month, children throughout the local area were welcomed back into the classroom. For many children, it is a time filled with much joy and delight. However, a new school year can also bring challenges for some students. Being introduced to a new school, teachers and friends can be difficult. Now the kids at Seaview Elementary School in Linwood have a new tool that will help them communicate more effectively with others. Earlier this month, teachers and students gathered outside of their playground as a brand new Buddy Bench was unveiled. According to the school’s principal, Lori Care, this new tool will help students during times of need.

The Buddy Bench concept has been adopted by many schools nationwide as an effective way for

students to communicate. Children who are shy or uncomfortable can sit on the bench to signal to other children that they are looking for a companion or want to be included during recess. Research has shown that Buddy Benches provide a channel for students to connect and learn important communication skills that will last a lifetime. Kids have also felt more encouraged to build friendships and less likely to bully others.

At Seaview Elementary, talks were in place as early as last year, but funding was a key issue, according to Care. She explains that “We were always worried about funding

and whether we should make one or get one.” The bench became a reality thanks to the family of Seaview student Robby McGuire, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome.

Earlier this year, the family started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the bench. They not only met their goal but surpassed it.

The school recently unveiled the Buddy Bench at a ribbon-cutting last month, with Robby McGuire in attendance, along with McGuire’s family and friends, dubbed Robby’s Crew, and the teachers of Seaview who have seen McGuire excel. The bench is draped in rainbow colors,

with a special sign filled with inspiring and encouraging quotes, such as “I Am Special. I Am Unique. I Am Me.” This area, known as the Buddy Zone, encourages classmates to be a friend.

In years past, the school has organized a yearly Buddy Walk, which has also included members of Linwood Public Schools and Mainland Regional High School marching band. Officials are hopeful to see its return in the future.

Thanks to the warm generosity of the McGuire family and caring community members, students at Seaview Elementary now have a Buddy Bench they can be happy to call their own. “The bench is magic, and it will have this aura around it for many years to come,” Care says.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The only way to have a friend is to be one.”

The Buddy Bench at Seaview Elementary will not only help students make new friends, but it will encourage students to be a friend.

Four Crockpot Recipes That’ll Make Your House Smell Warm and Cozy 2 cups of water 2 cups of whole milk ● A pinch of salt ● A pinch of pepper ● 2 tbsp of rosemary ● 2 tbsp of garlic powder ● 2 tbsp of Ranch seasoning Cut raw chicken breast into 1-inch cubes.

Dump chicken, celery, carrots, onion, chicken stock, water, spices and 1 cup of whole milk into the crockpot.

Pour flour into a medium-sized bowl. Pour 1 cup of milk into the bowl and stir.

Use a spoon and form 1-inch oval-shaped dumplings and drop each dumpling into the crockpot.

Cook chicken and dumplings on low heat for eight hours. Enjoy this warm, comforting meal!

hen I lived with the two ro o m m a te s , every Monday, one of us prepared a crockpot recipe in the morning before we all left for work.

After a long day at the office, I would open the front door and be floored by the heavenly aroma of the crockpot meal.

My mouth would water, and I would immediately take a bite before setting down my work bag. It was always so good. As school gets busy and family life becomes hectic, you deserve to experience the same bliss I did from a crockpot recipe.

Here are four recipes that are easily made before work and enjoyed after a long day:

Chicken and Dumplings Ingredients: ● 72 ounces of chicken breast ● 1 quart of chicken stock

6 long carrots, chopped 6 long sticks of celery, chopped 1 yellow onion, diced 1 cup of all-purpose flour

Apple Cinnamon French Toast

Ingredients: ● 10-14 pieces of sourdough (or white) bread ● 4 large eggs ● 3 cups of milk ● 3 tbsp of cinnamon ● 2 cups of brown sugar ● 4 apples (of your choice), diced ● 1 stick of unsalted butter, room temperature Loosely rip apart pieces of bread and place them in a crockpot.

In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, and spices. Pour mixture over bread in the crockpot.

Place butter stick on top of the mixture. Add diced apples. Set the crockpot on low heat for eight to ten hours. Add some maple syrup and enjoy the warm and gooey treat!

Ingredients: ● ½ cup of cocoa powder ● 24 oz. of baking chocolate ● 2 tbsp of pumpkin puree ● ½ cup of sugar ● 1 gallon of milk of choice (preferably whole milk) ● 2 tbsp of cinnamon ● 2 tbsp of nutmeg ● Whipped cream ● Chocolate drizzle Combine ingredients in a crockpot (except for the whipped cream and chocolate drizzle).

Heat hot chocolate on low for five to eight hours. Ladle into mugs and top with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. Perfect for a party or a cold, autumn night!

Four Cheese Mac and Cheese

Ingredients: 1 lb. of elbow macaroni, cooked al dente ● 2 cups of whole milk ● 2 cups of shredded cheddar ● 1 cup of shredded provolone ● 1 cup of shredded parmesan ● 4 oz. of cream cheese ● 1 cup of heavy cream ● 2 tbsp of Dijon mustard ● A pinch of salt ● A pinch of pepper ● 2 tbsp of paprika ● 2 tbsp of garlic powder ● 2 tbsp of onion powder ● 2 tbsp of all-purpose flour ● ½ stick of butter, unsalted In a medium saucepan, melt butter and flour (over medium heat) until the mixture is light brown in color.

Slowly pour in whole milk, whisking continuously. Continue until all milk is added and the mixture is thick and creamy. Add two cups of shredded cheddar and stir. Turn off heat and let it rest.

In a large crockpot, add cooked macaroni, cream cheese, spices, mustard, shredded provolone, and parmesan. Pour bechamel over macaroni and stir. Turn the crockpot on low heat and let it cook for five hours.

Miss’d America Crowns a New Queen Photos by Donald B Kravitz

he Miss'd America Pageant was held in the Etess Arena at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City Saturday night, October 23, 2021.

Amanda Pörq was crowned the Miss’d America winner. Along with a crown and sash, Pörq won $5,000. First runner-up received $2,500, and second runner-up received $1,500. The contestants were judged in the categories of talent, swimsuit, evening gown and an interview with the Judges.

Former Miss'd America, Sapphira Cristal held the title for two years since last year's pageant was cancelled due to COVID-19. Cristal was given the traditional tip for being the outgoing queen.

Carson Kressley, a television personality, actor, and designer, hosted the event, and Grammy-award winner, Thelma Houston performed.

A portion of the night's proceeds will be distributed to LGBTQ charities.

Atlantic City Arts Foundation celebrates 8th ARTeriors

T

he 8th Annual ARTeriors, hosted by the Atlantic City Arts Foundation (ACAF) in partnership with The Orange Loop Beach House, kicks off on November 5. The immersive arts celebration features installations from 14 local artists who will transform the interior of 112 Ocean Avenue in Atlantic City.

Owned by real estate investors, Kurt and Beth Kwart, the property will ultimately become the next Airbnb on the block.

However, before they call in the demolition team, the space will become a

temporary art exhibit.

“The impermanence of it is what’s kind of cool about it. It’s a reminder not to get too attached to things and that everything is fleeting,” explains artist, Christian Correa.

Correa will be transforming the second-floor bedroom into an interactive and introspective exhibit entitled, “Politics as Unusual.” The experiential installation aims to challenge the status quo regarding politics and encourage participants to think outside of the red and blue boxes we often find ourselves in.

The three-story building will be filled from floor to ceiling with art that inspires, tells stories, and pushes boundaries. As guests travel up and down the stairs, which

are beautifully designed by artist Michelle Franzoni, they will be invited to not only view the art but experience it.

The artistic range is vast at ARTeriors, from the first floor exhibits, including “Inner Peace,” by artist Johnny DreamAwake, a transformative piece inspired by poetry and love, to the third-floor bedroom experience by Heather Hires.

Bathrooms will be bubbling over with art by Randi Meekins and Christina Walley. Walls will be covered in thought-provoking murals by Doug Anderson, Greg Simmons, and Gary Lindley. Kitchens, bedrooms, and living areas will be completely morphed into a fully immersive art museum.

“It really is a great experience meeting all these other artists,” explains Lindley. “This changed my mindset about the vibe in Atlantic City. Even the neighbors have been super nice!”

This is the first ARTeriors hosted in a residential property. ARTeriors exhibits in the past were inside of a variety of different business spaces prior to their renovation. The Kwarts, owners of Orange Loop Beach House, are thrilled to give space for the artistic experience and plan to preserve as much of the art as possible during the forthcoming renovation. 112 Ocean Avenue will eventually sleep 10 guests and add to the lineup of Airbnbs on the block, which is adjacent to Tennessee Avenue.

This particular property is connected to the outside dining area at Rhythm & Spirits restaurant, owned

by Lee Sanchez and Mark Callazzo.

On November 5, the opening reception will be held in the Rhythm & Spirits courtyard, giving way to the ARTeriors experience. The reception will take place from 4:00 to 7:00 pm and will include light bites, drinks, and up-close interactions with the participating artists. The installation, however, will remain in place until No-

vember 21 for guests to enjoy.

“It’s truly an honor to be able to host such talented local artists and give them an opportunity to showcase their art,” shares Beth Kwart.

This star-studded artist event is unlike anything else in our area. The Atlantic City Arts Foundation, now in its 8th year, exists to foster an environment in which diverse arts and cultural programs enrich the quality of life for residents and visitors to Atlantic City.

’d like to take credit for that headline, but it’s a homage to the late Raiders owner Al Davis and his famous saying of “Just Win Baby”.

Plus, my friend and journalism colleague Todd Shaner from the Philadelphia Inquirer used it as the primary headline the day after the Eagles looked pitiful in the Las Vegas desert. The two other headlines for the primary articles on the sports page read “It takes hard work to be this bad” as well as “Birds’ defense exposed again”.

Since I last wrote, the Eagles lost at home to the defending Super Bowl champs and Tom Brady. Then, they went on the road and lost to the suddenly sharp Raiders. The Birds did make a trade before the trade deadline, but I think many fans are wondering “How can we ship OUT the coaching staff?” The Sixers drama with Ben Simmons continues, and they’re off to a decent start without him. The Flyers began the season with four home games and now face a tough road test in Western Canada. The Phillies hire back a familiar face for their coaching staff. Plus, two Phillies are named finalists for a major baseball award. Locally, a Delran native and Olympic star get ready to call it a career on the soccer pitch. And I was honored to play in a charity golf tournament that has great meaning to me.

Zach Ertz / Courtesy: Arizona Cardinals From entertainment, my girlfriend Susan and I watched a touching documentary about one of my favorite rock & roll stars in the movie theater recently.

Plus, I can’t wait for a new movie that’s going to debut first in the theater and then on Amazon Prime in December about what was once “America’s Favorite Couple”. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I’ll start with the Eagle's loss at home to the Tampa Bay Bucs on Thursday Night Football on October 15th. The final score was 28-22, but I never got the sense that the Eagles had a realistic chance to win the football game.

Tom Brady threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns, and running back Leonard Fournette looked unstoppable with the ground game. ● It was 28-to-7 before the Eagles began a comeback that turned out to be too little too late. It also turned out to be the final game in an Eagles uniform for Zach Ertz as he was traded to Arizona in exchange for rookie cornerback Tay Gowan and Arizona's 2022 fifth-round pick. I’m sad to see Ertz go, but I completely understand the logic behind it. Plus, maybe he’ll win another Lombardi Trophy with the Cardinals. He’s already caught a TD pass in his first game with his new team, and said afterward, “I’ve never seen so much green grass over the middle before, but that’s going to happen with guys like DeAndre Hopkins and A.J. Green on the outside.” ● The Eagles followed up their loss at home to Tampa with a road loss in Vegas last weekend that has them just 2-5 going into a road game at Detroit followed by a home game with a good Chargers team. I’m not sure where to start with the Raider's loss, other than to say that I was screaming at the TV when rookie coach Nick Sirianni early in the game when the Eagles had stopped the Raiders short and there

was an offensive holding penalty on Las Vegas. The TV commentators expected the Eagles to decline the penalty. Referee Clete Blakeman thought Sirianni was declining it, and Sirianni argued that “No, he WANTED to accept the penalty” which set up a 3rd & 15 instead of a 4th and 3.

Look, the Raider's body language was showing that they were going to punt away the football. Given a “gift” of a “do-over” by Sirianni, Derek Carr zipped a 43-yard pass to Zay Jones that got the Raiders down to the Eagles 14-yard line. That was it for me. That was the moment that I felt that Sirianni was “in over his head”.

And don’t get me started on the Eagles defense. They’re so vanilla and “Charmin-soft” that opposing QB’s are simply carving them up at will.

Derek Carr looked like he was competing in a 7-on-7 drill! Carr finished 31-for-34 for 323 yards and two touchdowns, setting a career-high for single-game completion percentage. Three incompletions for the pass defense doesn’t cut it by any standard in the NFL. It has become readily apparent that improving the defensive personnel needs to be a priority in the offseason.

earlier, it seemed like Embiid was done with Simmons, but here he was publicly supporting him before the home opener. Tobias Harris has tweeted his support for Simmons too. Again, this is a “stay tuned” situation.

On the ice, the Flyers kicked off the season with four straight home games, and I think I went to one of the most enjoyable ones as they beat the expansion Seattle Kraken at home 6-1 on Monday, October 18th. That game had everything as it had a lot of goals, a few fights, and a loud crowd inside the Wells Fargo Center. I loved it!

Unfortunately, after an impressive home win over Boston in the next game 6-3, the Flyers ended the home stretch on a down note falling 4-2 to unbeaten Florida. Their record sits at 2-1-1 after four games and now they head for their Western Canada road trip with games in Edmonton, Vancouver, and Calgary next.

From baseball, the Phillies have hired back Bobby Dickerson as their infield coach. Dickerson worked on Gabe Kapler’s staff in 2019 and replaces Juan Castro, who was let go before the season finale on October 3rd. Dickerson has spent

the last two seasons as a Padres bench coach, but his job wasn’t to secure out there, so he’s returning to South Philly. I think this is a key hire as Dickerson is known across baseball as a top infield instructor.

The Phillies ranked 28th, 30th, and 26th among 30 teams this season in runs saved at first base, shortstop, and third base, respectively. Didi Gregorius ranked 11 runs worse than the average shortstop; Alec Bohm was 13 runs worse than the average third baseman. It wasn’t a winning recipe, especially considering the ground-ball tendencies of starters Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Zach Eflin, Kyle Gibson, and Ranger Suárez.

In other Phillies news, Bryce Harper and JT Realmuto have both been named finalists for the 2021 Silver Slugger Awards. The Silver Slugger Awards will be announced by Major League Baseball on November 13th.

Braves in the World Series, are YOU staying up late for that? No thanks for me. I’ll catch a quick replay package the next morning, but no way am I staying up late for that!

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as my girlfriend Susan and I went to the Regal Hamilton Commons in Mays Landing to see “Somewhere You Feel Free”, the Tom Petty documentary on what would have been his 71st birthday on October 20th.

Mostly recorded during the making of the album “Wildflowers”, the movie was a touching and loving tribute to one of my favorite rock & roll acts. I truly believe that Tom Petty was a musical genius and his skills are on fine display in the movie. If you’re a Tom Petty fan, this is a MUST-see.

Lastly, I just stumbled across a trailer for a movie that’s going to debut in December in theaters first and then on Amazon Prime and it’s called “Being the Ricardos." Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, I simply cannot WAIT to see what Sorkin does with a movie about Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz and the “I Love Lucy” show that was such a mega-hit for CBS back in the day. Nicole Kidman plays Lucy and Javier Bardem plays Arnaz. The project has the blessing of Lucie Arnaz, the couple’s daughter. It’s out in movie theaters on December 10th and then out on Prime Video on December 21st. I can’t wait!

Speaking of which, we didn’t win, but I do want to thank Scott Dunn, Aaron Bada, and Sean Fawcett for being my partners in the Jack Thomas Memorial Golf Outing at Greate Bay Country Club on Monday, October 25th. The late owner of Charlie’s in Somers Point always had time to help someone out and was always very giving with both his time and money for a good cause.

Guaranteed Good News This Election, No Matter Who Wins Jeff's Journal

f you’re like me, Election Day can’t come soon enough. Maybe you’re passionate, over-the-top engaged, or could not care less.

Wherever you fall on the spectrum, there is some positive news for you, regardless of who wins.

The first piece of good news is that your voice matters. It is important to vote whenever we have the chance. Voting allows us to influence our community, state, or nation. Men and women have given their lives so that you and I can exercise that privilege. If people have given their lives for that right, the least we can do is take a few minutes to study the issues that impact us and make an informed decision when we head to

the polls. Don’t complain about the state of our community, state, or nation if you aren’t willing to share those feelings at the ballot box. Each vote matters. Combined with our family, friends and neighbors' votes, it all adds up. Don’t say “I’m only one person.”

Instead of being passive, become proactive! We often don’t get involved and throw up our arms without realizing the power we all have to make a difference. So whether you are encouraged or discouraged after the election, I want to offer three things you can do to make your voice heard and affect change.

1. Volunteer

It could be in a civic or charitable organization. It could also be at your church or religious organization.

Regardless of where you want to volunteer, offer to help and get involved. When attention is taken off of ourselves and onto a cause larger

than ourselves, it will give you a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of purpose.

2. Run for Office

Maybe you aren’t going to run for President of the United States. However, you could run for a position on your condominium association, community governing board, or charitable board of directors. If you want to see a change in your community, step up and become an agent of change.

3. Speak Up

Let your voice be heard. Attend a School Board meeting and speak

up. Join a parents association and offer your input. Instead of complaining about what you would like organizations to do, speak to the people in power and let them know what you would like to see.

There are a lot of ways to make a difference in our communities.

However, unless we step up, we will never affect change. Our ability to make an impact starts in our local area.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” That is great advice to remember as November 2nd approaches. Let’s go out and make a difference in the world that we live in!

C.R.O.P.S. Farm-to-Fork Fundraiser Raised Over $10,000

t was an evening to remember on Tennessee Avenue, complete with flowing wine, meaningful conversation, and a delectable, locally sourced, four-course meal. On Tuesday, October 26th, C.R.O.P.S., in partnership with Rhythm & Spirits, hosted an intimate Farm-to-Fork dinner featuring vegetables harvested just a few blocks away.

C.R.O.P.S. (Communities Revolutionizing Open Public Spaces) is a 501c3 organization that promotes healthy and connected communities through local community gardens, Farmers’ Markets, education, and advocacy. With gardens throughout Atlantic County, C.R.O.P.S. has been serving South Jersey since 2016.

At Rhythm & Spirits in Atlantic City,

executive chef Kevin Cronin incorporates locally harvested fruits and vegetables grown in the C.R.O.P.S. gardens throughout the year. The thoughtfully curated menu for the Farm-to-Fork Fundraiser on Tuesday evening offered guests a unique opportunity to learn about the food that they were eating while feeling inspired by the work that C.R.O.P.S. is doing in the community.

The four-course menu featured bread and butter style, pickled green tomatoes inspired by Chef Charles Soreth. The particular heirloom variety of tomato that was used for this dish is unique, as they are not often found in the grocery store due to their quick shelf life.

Following the tomatoes, guests were served a vibrant green salad with kale, radishes, gooseberries, and arugula, all of which were harvested early Tuesday morning. The butternut squash risotto that followed was a crowd favorite, topped with parmesan cheese and fried shallots from the garden.

The mouth-watering menu culminated with a tomato based, classic Italian-American Puttanesca dish with

grilled chicken and sage. Chef Kevin surprised the crowd with a 5th course, cheesecake from Bar 32, located next door to Rhythm & Spirits.

Throughout the evening, attendees were encouraged to generously donate to the C.R.O.P.S fundraising efforts. The organization, led by Paige Vaccaro, provides underserved communities with opportunities to feed themselves locally sourced, sustainable food. The C.R.O.P.S markets accept SNAP benefits and feature seasonal produce up to 10 months out of the year. The commitment to serving the community expands well beyond the garden. C.R.O.P.S. offers paid internships that hire community members

living near the gardens, mental health and nutrition education, and healthy food advocacy. The C.R.O.P.S. mission is to facilitate growth by creating new experiences and places that promote healthy and connected communities.

“The concept that we don’t believe in at C.R.O.P.S. is that there are haves and have nots. Everybody has something to gain and they also have something to give. We aim to bridge the gap.” - Paige Vaccaro.

"Illusions the Drag Queen Show” Comes to Atlantic City Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

itness the most visually spectacular show in the area every Friday and Saturday at 2832 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, 08401. “Illusions the Drag Queen Show” combines raunchy burlesque with jovial performances by some of the best celebrity impersonators in the USA. This country-wide show is performed at several locations across the nation, making it one of the biggest shows in America. Be prepared to laugh all night and be in awe of the incredible performances by impersonators of Madonna, Cher, Liza Minelli, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Adele, Amy Winehouse, and many, many more!

Drag is an art that dates back to Shakespearean times when male actors would often play the parts of female characters. Recently, however, it has become so much more than that. It is an art form that is globally respected and features some of the most jaw-dropping costumes, makeup, and wigs in the entertainment industry. Drag has been popularized in recent years by shows such as “Ru Paul’s Drag Race,” which sees several contestants compete against each other in fashion and performance challenges for a chance to win the coveted title of the next drag superstar. The critically-acclaimed show has been renewed for a 14th season, which goes to show just how popular drag is. So if you love the series or

have ever been intrigued by it, “Illusions” is the show for you.

If you have a special event coming up such as a bachelorette party, birthday party, gay bachelor party, or just want to spend a fun and memorable afternoon with a group of friends, this will be something the entire crowd will discuss for weeks. Cheryl S. attended the New York version of the show and said, “So much fun! We laughed about this show for days!”

The show will run as a brunch (1:30 pm) or dinner (5:30 pm or 7:30 pm) show, and prices range from $20 for single tickets to $375 for groups of 10, depending on the level of service you require. The brunch show includes a brunch with a selection of bread,

pastries, bagels, waffles, breakfast meats, and even a mimosa for an early afternoon tipple. The dinner show has a choice of with or without a three-course dinner and drinks. The dinner includes your choice of a soup, salad, or another starter; a choice of

I felt very confident surfing in Hawaii.

It was very last minute, so I called the ASP (association of surfing professionals) and asked if I could enter the WQS Puerto Escondido “Mexican Pipeline” event.

This was a complete last-minute decision. My focus to qualify was solely on Hawaii. I did live there for one winter when I graduated Mainland High school, and I remember working at the Chevron and pumping gas for all the pro’s coming through like Dereck Ho, Hans Hedaman and many more. I always said to myself I’m coming for you while I pumped their gas and wiped their windshields! I did end up beating Dereck Ho who was a

He looked like and oil icon. We chatted a little, small talk mostly, during the hour and a half flight from Mexico City to Puerto Escondido. When we landed in Puerto Escondido, people were trying to push ahead of each other to quickly leave the plane. Here’s where the magic happened.

We waited in our seats, both obvious experienced travelers, and we waited until the doors opened and those desperate people to got off, when we got up the gentleman said, “it was really nice to meet you.” He reached his hand out for a formal

Many Australians and international surfers were trying to gain points to qualify for the “Dream” as the tour was coming close to the end. The contest started on Thursday, and we all had to go through the rounds to advance. I had long forgot about my encounter on the plane. It was Saturday evening, and I had advanced

handshake. I extended my hand to shake his, he went on to continue to lock my hand and kept shaking my hand saying, “I’m the seventh son born from a seventh son on the seventh day.” I was trying to take my hand back, but he wouldn’t let me go!

He looked me in the eyes gripping my hand firmly; remember this guy looked like an oil tycoon.

Meanwhile, we are blocking the exit, and he kept shaking my hand firmly looking me straight in the eyes and at that point I just kept letting him shake my hand…and he said, “You are going to win this contest!” “Yeah, whatever thanks,” I replied. That’s really when I was like this guy is nuts.

I think he saw me roll my eyes, but he went on to say again, “I’m the 7th son born from a 7th son born on the 7th day of the 7th month in the 7th hour in the 7th moon cycle” and so on. He went on to say that he was the luckiest man on the planet. I became intrigued! I’ve traveled the planet many times over and have met many characters, but this was a new one!

Did he really just put his lucky energy into me?!

Back to the contest. Puerto Escondido in 1995 was underdeveloped compared to today, but it’s a beautiful place with great healthy food

through the rounds to Sunday’s quarter finals and the finals day. A winner would emerge on that day. I bought a six pack of beer for my victory; Mexico doesn’t serve alcohol on Sundays, so I had to plan ahead.

It was finals day, and the waves were great (not huge but a bit over head and clean offshore conditions offering plenty of barrels). My goal was to win. I had 2 heats to advance to get me to the finals, and I excelled in each one.

The luck of the 7th Son served well, as I did win the event! And, winning this event actually secured my place on the prestigious world Dream Tour that only 16 surfers on the planet can obtain per year! My friend Paul Canning placed 2nd securing his place as well. We were staying together and about to enjoy our beers by the pool!

I thought back in awe. This 7th son of a 7th son is some crazy stuff! I blew it off at the time as just another wacko and whatever. After all, I do travel the world and meet some characters along the way! Did he really put his energy and luck of the 7th son of a 7th son into me!? I should have had him on tour with me! Hindsight is 20/20.

Meet Chef Andrew Prosser

C

hef Andrew Prosser is extraordinarily accomplished by any measure. Add in the fact that he is only 26 years old and it is remarkable! He began his journey in the food industry as a child, growing up in the restaurant business. His grandparents owned a barbeque establishment in Texas.

Prosser now uses that very same equipment to run his own barbeque business, "Up in Smoke."

The barbeque business runs in the summer and Prosser is the chef at Levari’s Seafood and American Grill during the winter months.

He began working at Levari’s when he was only 16 years old. Beginning as a dishwasher, Prosser moved on to become a Prep Chef and eventually, Executive Chef.

Additionally, Prosser spent 4 years working at the Island Grill in Ocean City. He also gained

experience at three restaurants at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. If that's not enough, Prosser has partnered with certified personal trainer Brandon Burchell to run SwitchUp Fitness, creating SwitchUp Fitness meal preps. He is a trained nutritional coach and personal trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

When Prosser reflects on what influenced him the most he is quick to credit the Academy of Culinary Arts.

"My career was forever changed in 2018 when I enrolled in The Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College.

I was inspired to do so by my boss at the time, Executive Chef and owner of The Island Grill, Andrew Yoa, an alumni himself."

There, Prosser was introduced to the American Culinary Federation (ACF) and the Professional Chef Association of South Jersey. A member since 2018, Prosser currently sits on the

board as well as their committee for the fundraising gala.

Through the ACF, Prosser has competed in a regional competition in 2019. This past summer at the American Culinary Federation's biggest event of the year the National ACF Conference in Orlando, Prosser presented on stage with a Certified Master Chef.

What is next for Chef Prosser? He is looking forward to the next ACF National Conference and will be competing in the student chef of the year competition. Prosser will be finishing

up his classes with a triple degree in Culinary Arts, baking and pastry, and food service management.

"My main focus is to be a mentor and an inspiration for the new students and future of the culinary health and fitness industry. I have even taken on apprentices from here in Jersey as well as far as Florida and Texas," shared Prosser. "After I graduate, I look forward to the next chapter in my career, using every resource and skill I have come across in my 15 years being involved in this business to become a culinary instructor."

When asked why he decided to go to culinary school, get so many certifications and get involved with the American Culinary Federation, Prosser explains it like this.

"Your career is like a sauce. First, you start with your stock. That's your experience that you build over time.

Then you take that and add your herbs and spices. That's the culinary school and for me the ACF and all the extra things in my career that I've done. That's where you start to build character and structure to your sauce. Then you simmer your sauce with everything you put into it. Then doors start to open. Your sauce gets richer."

Long Lost Towns of the Pines

he Pine Barrens of New Jersey contain more ghost towns, some say, then the entire America west. The Pinelands of today with its pristine woodlands and unique plant and animal communities, is a very different place than the busy industrial center it once was hundreds of years ago. These villages rose up around the iron furnaces, glass factories, paper mills, cranberry farms and brick-making factories that once turned the raw materials of the region into products needed by the new nation. When the demand for these goods diminished, these industrial towns faded away, reclaimed by the pines.

Amatol, Mullica Township Amatol was a planned community built during the first World War. It was centered around a munitions factory. The town was meticulously thought out and designed to be both attractive and stimulating, combining the best of country and city life. When the war ended, much of the town was dismantled. Still, some streets, cellars and foundations remain.

Batsto Village, Hammonton With a name derived from the Swedish word "bastu" (meaning sauna), this town got its start by producing household pots and kettles. It quickly became a bustling ironworks that supplied the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. It was

essentially a "company town" owned and run for 92 years

by William Richards. The discovery of coal in Pennsylvania led to a steady decline of the industry. Industrialist Joseph Wharton came to lead the town in 1876, experimenting with agriculture and glass manufacturing before starting his business school in Philadelphia. The last residents left in 1989.

Batsto is now a NJ historical site with many of the original structures remaining, including the Batsto mansion, a sawmill, a blacksmith, ice and milk houses, a carriage house and stable, and a general store.

The post office is still open. The buildings have been fully restored and are maintained as a historical site, with a museum and visitors' center.

Pleasant Mills, Mullica Township From 1822 - 1916, Pleasant Mills was a prosperous paper manufacturing village. The business eventually waned and the mill was turned into an art gallery. This was short-lived and the mill currently acts as a playhouse theater. Visit not only for the shows but the surrounding abandoned buildings including a mansion and a church.

Ong’s Hat. Pemberton Township This notorious ghost town in the Pine Barrens has only a few structures remaining, it’s ruins hidden deep in the woods. There are several stories about how this town got its name. Some say a man named Jacob Ong threw his hat into the air out of frustration, at which point it became stuck in a tree. More likely, the town was originally named Ong's Hut after a way station/rest area along a grain transportation route. Legend says that the town had just a handful of houses, along with a thriving dance hall. However, industry left the area and Ong's Hut/Ong's Hat slowly became abandoned.

any times, families gather information on funeral costs and make decisions solely on price. While it is very important to stay within a predetermined budget, it’s also important to completely understand exactly which services are being offered and which you really want. It’s at this point you want to consider the trustworthiness of the funeral home, the quality of the facilities, and the experience of the staff. You might receive a much more satisfying service for only a few dollars more.

Case in point- I had a family call wanting a direct cremation and I gave them the amount that we charge which includes a private family farewell. They said ok and left me their number to follow up. I followed up with them the next day and they informed me that they chose someone else because they were “cheaper”. A couple of days later the family called saying that they were having issues because the firm they chose was not local and was not providing an

obituary or urn and the death certificates were incorrect and they were having issues correcting them. The words came out of the consumer’s mouth “I should have spent a little more and gone with you.” I did the obit for him and sold him a nice moderate urn. Again, be aware of what you are purchasing and usually spending a bit more gets you better customer service and less headaches.

When people shop, they often fail to compare the same services and merchandise at each firm. The most confusing part is when families compare service charges and think one funeral home is a lot less when the firm with the lower service charge may actually charge more for its urns/caskets and other merchandise. Always compare the bottom line and find out what is included and not included. See you next issue.

orn and raised in South Jersey, author Patrice Dawson is changing the narrative when it comes to grief, heartache, and life’s curveballs. In her new book, “It Didn’t Kill Me: A Memoir: Pressing During Trying Times,” Dawson chronicles her life’s story with all its unforeseen challenges, and how she learned to find joy amidst the turbulence.

Dawson spent her life dedicated to excellence, education, and hard work.

Holding a variety of degrees in elementary education, Christian education, and educational leadership, Patrice is often a go-to resource among her peers. However, when Patrice’s life took a series of unexpected turns, she had to look beyond her education for the answers. She had to look to her faith.

Chapter 2 of her memoir refers to all the little “its” that don’t kill us. The chapter, titled “It Happens,” chronicles a traumatic series of events, including the loss of her father followed by the sudden loss of her mother, and all of the life changes that ensued.

In the subsequent chapters, Patrice shares stories of faith and resiliency.

She shares stories of her mother’s unwavering faith and the impact it had on her growing up. Dawson goes on to explain how having “mustard-seed” faith led her through the most challenging times in her life, and how making the conscious decision to choose joy can have a lasting impact on your overall well-being.

When she is not busy raising her son, volunteering her time, or writing books, Dawson hosts a podcast, “Finding Joy In The Press,” and an internet radio show, “Virtual Joy Nuggets.”

Patrice Dawson has been through the most challenging of times, as many of us have. It’s what she does with that pain and how she transforms it into opportunities for joy that inspires readers, listeners, friends, and family.

’ve covered cold-weather wines here, but what about spirit-enthusiasts? This one’s for all the budding mixologists looking for some harvest season cocktail ideas. Both of these recipes were developed by Passion Vines’s own mixology expert, Megan, who is eager to pass them along. Enjoy!

Bourbon Harvest

Ingredients: ● 1 ½ oz. Rye (we used Bulleit Rye) ● 3 oz. Pear Juice ● 1 tsp. Apple Cider Vinegar ● Sparkling Cider Fill shaker with ice. Add the rye, pear juice and apple cider vinegar.

Shake for about 30 seconds. Strain into a glass filled with fresh ice. Top off with the sparkling cider and serve!

To elevate, try garnishing with rosemary sprigs, apple slices, skewered cubes of pear or apple, or even a caramel rim.

Pomegranate Mule

Ingredients: ● 2 oz. 100% Pomegranate Juice ● 2 oz. Vodka (We used Tito’s) ● 4 oz. ginger beer ● Juice of half a lime ● Lime Wedges ● Fresh Mint Fill a tall glass with ice. Add the

pomegranate juice, vodka, lime juice, and ginger beer. Stir gently to combine. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and a slice of lime. To amplify, add a handful of whole frozen cranberries or pomegranate seeds to your glass.

These will taste just as good prepared in your own kitchen as they did when we made them at the bar. That being said, I still hope to see you at the next cocktail event, where we’ll taste more original seasonal cocktails and share tips, tricks, and laughter.
