We stayed up late that night watching scary movies while munching on KitKats and Tootsie rolls, rationalizing our indulgent behavior with the fact that all this sugar would not be healthy for the kids. It was our duty to consume it before they did. I have to admit, it was one of my favorite responsibilities! So many Halloween parties, parades, trips to the pumpkin patch and Halloween nights have come and gone since then. The memories become our treasures. Fall foliage a bit behind schedule Weather By Dan Skeldon
I
t's only mid-October, and we're not quite to the part of fall where all the leaves are brown and the sky is gray. Although admittedly, we've sure had our fair share of gray days at times this season. However, if you're autumn dreaming on an October day, any fall-ish feel has been just that, a dream, since the season began back on September 22nd. Well, except for a brief glimpse of some crisp fall weather on fleeting occasions. We're now more than three weeks into fall, and there have been 6 days with highs surging past 80 degrees, and another 6 days with highs reaching at least 75°. True, we're not exactly breaking record highs. But temperatures have been consistently warmer than average so far this autumn, both day and night. Typical early fall nights
run in the low to mid-50s in late September and ease deeper into the 40s come October. But so far this season, there have only been two nights that qualify as cool, when overnight lows did drop into the mid to upper 40s. That means frost has not been a concern to date. But is that unusual? The answer: not that unusual, at least not yet. Let's remember a frost isn't a freeze, when temperatures drop below the freezing mark of 32 degrees for several hours, ending the growing season. A frost can and does occur with above freezing temperatures, most commonly with overnight lows from 33 to 37 degrees. So at least for this column, let's use that 37° mark as the magic number. At the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY), the average date of the first night when temperatures drop to or below 37 degrees over the last 75 years is October 10th, a date which we just passed last weekend. But of course, there is a wide range of possible dates that may see the first frost, depending on the year and the prevailing weather pattern. The earliest date of our first 37-degree low at ACY was September 14th, back in 1975. Conversely, the latest we had to wait for our first fall frosty morning was back
in 1946, when the first 37° low waited until November 5th that year. So if we're into early November and there's still no frost, then we enter unusual or even unprecedented territory. But we're not there yet. However, we've been trending in that direction over the last decade or so. Since 2010 and the more pronounced warming of our climate, the average date of our first frost has been getting later. Since 2010, that average first frost date has slid back 11 more days from October 10th, the date listed above, to October 21st. It could be an unusually warm decade and just a blip that will eventually self-correct, or it could be the start of later frosts, later freezes, and later snowfalls. As always, time will tell. For now, the consistent warmth across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic so far this fall means that the growing season continues for those that want it. It may also mean a slightly delayed fall foliage season this year. The brightest and "peak" fall colors could be a little later than usual, and that overall peak may be somewhat out-of-sync, where some trees turn brilliant colors while others remain a steadfast green. In this case, I speak from personal experience and observation after a Columbus Day weekend trip to the Poconos. Yes, there is some brilliant color, and that color change is slowly progressing south as it does every fall. But it does seem to be slower than usual this season, due in large part to the lack of sustained cool air and crisp
and frosty nights. And if it's a little slower to peak in the higher elevations up north, it's likely going to be a little slower to change and peak here in South Jersey as well. Now, trees take their cues to change color from other factors besides the weather, like the shorter days and longer nights for instance. So the fall color may be delayed, but it's never really denied. That delay may push our South Jersey peak, which normally occurs around or after Halloween, back a bit further into November. Perhaps there is some truth to the ideas that were laid out in one of my columns from last month. If our climate is indeed changing, maybe our seasons are shifting, perhaps slightly, perhaps more significantly. It will be interesting to watch the seasonal trends going forward to see if those shifts do indeed continue. In the meantime, it should start to finally feel more like fall with some consistently cool weather into next week. Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Izzy’s culinary career has brought him from the kitchens of Maloney’s in Margate, to Sous Chef at the Continental at the Pier Shops in Atlantic City to gourmet dining as an Executive Sous Chef with Robert’s at Taj Mahal Casino Hotel, followed by nine years with Chickie & Petes. Izzy had only one professional goal: to run his own steak and seafood house. Together with the Fabietti’s, he’s seeing that dream to fruition! With her entrepreneurial prowess, Wendy foresaw the opportunity to resurrect the celebrated landmark. Fulfilling a monumental dream for Izzy and Alisha, she and Vic purchased the Inn at Sugar Hill in June 2021. They immediately opened the Inn’s centuries’ old B &B guest rooms, followed by Izzy’s River Landing on the banks of the Great Egg Harbor River just weeks later. Featuring Live entertainment four nights a week, the outdoor dining deck offers a raw bar with lunch and dinner fare six days a week. As word traveled throughout South Jersey, both local and transient boaters began arriving at the property’s waterfront dock. Night after night saw sold-out summer crowds igniting excitement in the town’s center not seen in years! With the start of football season, the party tent was enclosed and big-screen televisions were installed as an option for watching the games accompanied by Izzy’s outstanding menu selections. Coming this November, the warmth and hospitality of country
inn dining come indoors with the unveiling of Izzy’s Steak and Seafood House. Featured steaks are all Certified Angus including: Bone-in New York Strip, Center Cut Filet, Cowboy Steak, American Wag yu Flat Iron Steak, and Bone-in Center Cut Pork Chop. Reservations are necessary. The acquisition of this historic Inn could only be appreciated more by ‘William Moore’ himself; the original owner and statesman who envisioned his beautiful property perched atop a high bluff, overlooking the Great Egg Harbor River. Today we imagine he is resting more comfortably knowing his beloved Sugar Hill is being lovingly managed under the care and direction of the Inn’s first female owner, Wendy Fabiett, I, and Executive Chef, Izzy Rodriguez. Boo! It’s Ghosting Time Let It Grow By Tammy Thornton
‘T
is the scary season of witches, spiders, and shaking in your boots. However, if you hear something go bump in the night and find goodies at your door, have no fear—you’ve just been ghosted! At our house, that abrupt knock and ghost on your door is cause for celebration. If you haven’t heard of “ghosting” or “booing”, then you probably don’t have young children. Here’s how it works: Someone from the “ghosting house” gets things started. They bring a bag or bucket of Halloween goodies such as candy, fake spiders, toy vampire teeth, or decorations, and leave it at some unsuspecting house where kids live. The fun part
is that it must be done anonymously. You sneak up to the house in the dark of the evening, tape an official ghost on their door, leave your basket of fun, knock loudly, and run like mad, hoping they don’t hear your heart beating. Once your house has been ghosted, you have 24 hours to pick up a ghost and instruction sheet from the ghosting house, so that you can ghost someone new. The fun starts October 1 and ends on Halloween. By mid-October, you’ll see half of the doors in your town covered in ghosts.

SUNDAY, OCT. 17th AT 11 AM – 8 PM In recent years, the ghost host family allows those who got missed to request ghosting via social media to make sure their child doesn’t get skipped. Though many towns in our area take part in ghosting or booing, the tradition was started locally 19 years ago by a Linwood mom named Cindy Smith. The OG mom (Original Ghosting mom) had heard about the ghosting idea from a friend whose relative was living near Chicago, and thought it would be a fun tradition to start in Linwood. Little did she know, the game would still be going almost 20 years later. She has since moved out of the city, but still enjoys seeing ghosts around the neighborhood whenever she visits in October. You may hear of variations of the ghosting idea in other towns both locally and throughout the country, but Smith set it up to have one house provide the ghosts to anyone that wanted to participate. The ghosting torch (broomstick?) has been passed down through the years. The current ghosting house has been doing it for five years. Last year, they gave out nearly 500 ghosts! In recent years, ghosts have been recycled to save paper. You can tell the age of these generational ghosts by how many hearts are on them. Once Halloween is over, you return the ghosts to the ghosting house to keep the fun going for next year. Keeping 500 ghosts in your house? Now that’s scary!

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings
What is…oh, I forgot
Senior Moments By Charles P. Eberson
M
y wife and I enjoy watching the long running game show, Jeopardy. It’s not that our evening schedule revolves around the show but if we think about it around the time it is airing, we’ll tune in. I have to say, it is quite humbling. I consider myself relatively well read but if I ever had the slightest glimmer of taking the online Jeopardy test, watching several episodes diminishes my hopes. Even the losing player would soundly trounce me. As a matter of fact, some of the contestants ring in before I can fully comprehend some of the questions. But what keeps me coming back is that occasionally, I get the correct answer right, even when none of the
contestants do. A few dormant Rip Van Winkle synapses stir from their hibernation and the correct answer inexplicably springs forth. My wife’s wonder is only exceeded by my own. Here is the real challenge, though. I can’t seem to access the answers as quick as the contestants; answers I should know. For instance, when the question is something related to what actor won an Academy Award for a specific performance, I say to my wife, “Oh you know who that is! It’s that guy, you know who played in that western, you know where he shoots that other guy.” (BUZZER) Oh, God I knew that one. One couple we play with when visiting them, has the show On Demand so when its Final Jeopardy, they pause it after the question to give us all more time. Over the years, there has been Teen Jeopardy, College Jeopardy and of course the regular Adult Jeopardy. My suggestion is to have a SENIOR JEOPARDY. There would have to be some changes, though. First of all, there would be no Double Jeopardy or the show would be an hour long. The contestants would have to be sitting since we can’t stand for ex-
tended periods of time. There would be more breaks in to go to the bathroom and for snacking to keep our sugar from plummeting. The buzzer would have to be larger as in the one on Family Feud since nerve neuropathy would affect manipulating the buzzer. Response time after hitting the buzzer would have to be extended since the contestants would either forget their answers or the questions. A new much larger game board would have to be constructed due to poorer eyesight by many contestants. For complete transparency, I did take the online Jeopardy quiz to see if I could advance to the next round. Suffice to say, you won’t be seeing me on any episode in the near or distant future. Not completely because I knew too few answers. I did know
some of them but the format was not as they say, “user friendly.” They gave you fifteen seconds to read the question and answer the question. It took me five to eight seconds to read the question and a few seconds to try and recall the right response. The response then had to be typed correctly onto the keyboard which took a few seconds after which you moved the mouse to SUBMIT and left click. Even with the right answers, by the time I finished the steps, the fifteen seconds had lapsed. I received an email stating my test was received and the results will be forthcoming in a few days. Let’s just say, I’m not exactly checking out plane fares to California. I’ll just be content to blurt out answers from the comfort and privacy of my recliner. Flour Power
By Chef Joseph Massaglia
D
id you know that in Italy there are over 350 known pasta shapes with over 400 regional names? However, despite the shape and/or the name, they all have one thing in common. The best Italian pasta is made with 100% white durum semolina flour. This type of flour is made from the soft wheat variety and is lowest in gluten content. The 00 (double zero) stands for the level of refinement or grinding, not the gluten content – 00 is the finest grind of all the flours and 2 is the coarsest. Here in the United States, pastry flour is closest to 00 flour. In America, 60% of all wheat grown is considered hard wheat, which has a higher gluten content. Gluten content in flour is important because if you’re making bread or pizza dough, you want strong or higher gluten to make your bread or
pizza dough rise and hold its shape, and you want soft or lower/weaker gluten flour when making pasta so your noodles are thin and uniform. The bag of all-purpose flour in your pantry is a blend between the two varieties. It contains mostly the hard and red variety with some soft and white mixed in. In a pinch it can be used to make almost any recipe, but to achieve optimal results in your baking and cooking, I highly recommend using the appropriate specialty flour called for in the recipe. In fact, at Mama Mia’s Restaurante, I use two different gluten content flours – the higher gluten coarser grind (similar to bread flour) for all our pizzas and the softer 00 flour for making our raviolis and other specialty pastas. If you’ve never made fresh pasta at home, I encourage you to try it. There are recipes and tips all over the internet and, of course, in cookbooks. You really don’t need any
fancy equipment, but you do need a good amount of counter space, a friend or family member or two to help, and a little bit of patience. A good, fresh pasta is made with flour, eggs and salt. You can make it on the counter “Italian” style, or in a food processor. Once you make the dough, you knead it until it is smooth and elastic, at least 10 minutes. You then can put it through a pasta machine or roll it by hand until you reach the desired thickness. (Note: Don’t let your dough dry out while you are working with it. Make several small balls and then keep them covered with a towel or plastic wrap until you’re ready to use them.) Once your pasta is cut or shaped, let it sit for 30 minutes to “cure,” then proceed with your recipe. Whatever recipe you use and
whatever shape you choose, you and your family will love it – such a difference over pasta out of the box! Be well, stay safe, and please continue to support your local restaurants. Buon Appetito! A popular summertime attraction, the park boasts over seventy attractions. One of its newest additions is the newly-built Stunt Pilot, a single-rail
steel coaster, with a height of 105 feet and top speeds of 52 mph. In a span of nine months, the coaster was built by Idaho-based Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC). Under the creative vision of RMC founder Fred Grubb, the company has lent its hands on several projects over the years, including the refurbishment of the New Texas Giant in Arlington, TX, and Cedar Point’s Steel Vengeance. Locally, they are best

The Hallowe'en celebration of 1921
A Look Back at Ocean City By Fred Miller
"W
here Are You Going to Spend HALLOWE'EN?" was the headline in the October 20, 1921 Ocean City Sentinel. They answered the question, "In Ocean City, of course. We are making extensive preparations to entertain you." An article in the same newspaper reported on the planning. "The publicity of Ocean City's Carnival has reached far and wide. It is being sent out by wireless; slides are being run in the moving picture houses; frontpage stories have been secured in any number of papers; and through the courtesy of the management of Shore Fast Line Railroad the big orange posters are displayed in every station from Somers Point to Longport and a poster will be placed in
every trolley car. "Miller, the theatrical costumier from Philadelphia, will be here about five days before the carnival and can be found in the building, formerly the Parker Miller ice cream parlor on Asbury Avenue. The securing of Mr. Miller to come here was an exceptionally good piece of luck as it will give those without costumes a chance to secure something right up to the minute." All the time spent in preparation paid off. The success of the October 31 celebration was reported in the November 3,1921 Sentinel under the front page headline, "Hallowe'en Carnival Was City's Greatest Pageant." The article began, "Thousands of
spectators, many of them masked and armed with confetti and noise making devices, witnessed Monday night the biggest, noisiest, merriest and all-round most successful Hallowe'en celebration ever held here.”

h ether you are hosting a Halloween party, a bonfire with family, or just need something sweet, nothing beats having a unique treat and someone to share it with. Pumpkin pie and apple turnovers are so cliché, so here are some new, exciting recipes to wow crowds and satisfy your sweet tooth:

Pour caramel onto a sheet pan lined with wax paper. Chill in the fridge for three hours. Cut into bite-sized pieces and wrap in wax paper. Enjoy with a cup of warm coffee or cold milk.
In a large mixing bowl, add wet ingredients (eggs, sugar, butter, pumpkin, and water) and mix thoroughly by hand or by electric mixer. Combine dry ingredients (flour, spices, baking powder, and salt) slowly into wet ingredients. The batter should thicken and not contain any dry lumps. Stir in chopped pecans. Embracing The Season Jeff's Journal By Jeff Whitaker
A
s we move deeper into autumn, the days are getting cooler and the colors around us are changing. If you have children in school, hopefully you’re getting more settled into a routine. We’re in a new season.
Some people love the change of seasons, while others fight it. "Take me to Florida, or somewhere warm, and plant me permanently,” some say. Personally, I love the change of seasons. I’ll admit that when summer ends, I shed a tear and lament a bit over how fast it went. However, I love Fall. I find redeeming value in every season. There is always something to celebrate, appreciate and enjoy. It’s like that in life as well. We have seasons in our lives like the seasons of a year. Some seasons

are more enjoyable than others. All too often we wish a season we are passing through would just end. At other times, maybe we wish a season never ends. The challenge is to find something to celebrate and find value in every season of life. I admit that it’s easier said than done in many cases. However, it can help if you hang on to these three concepts when you are in the midst of any season, good or not so good: ● Seasons are part of life. No matter how much we try to avoid change or new seasons, they happen. I know it helps me to know that seasons do not last forever. When something negative is happening, that is an encouragement to keep in mind. When great things are happening, it’s a reminder to soak it all up and enjoy. ● Our attitude plays a huge role in how we navigate a season. Unlike any other life-form, we humans have the ability to reason. We can control the way we respond instead of just instinctively reacting to conditions in our lives. A positive attitude in the middle of a challenging situation goes a long way.
Look for the lessons. By nature, I am an optimistic person. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t have my days. We all do. Luckily, I’m pretty quick to snap out of it. I evaluate every challenge or obstacle I face. I want to learn from each of my seasons. My goal is to come out on the other side better for having gone through it. Ask yourself questions about the seasons you find yourself in. Use the season as an opportunity to grow as a person, and focus on what you learned in that period. Find the redeeming value in it. Seasons are inevitable. We can either embrace them or fight them. I choose to embrace each season. I hope you will too. Until next time, let’s go out and make a difference.

Fall fun for the family at R and J Farms
By Holly Martin

he weather is getting cooler, and it’s the best time of the year to go pumpkin picking or to get lost in a corn maze. R and J Farms has exactly what you’re looking for to fulfill all your fall activity desires. Every weekend, you can purchase tickets to have a whole day of fun with their hayrides, corn maze, jump pad, concession stand, farm stand, and pony rides. Then you can finish your day with an ice cream sandwich from the food truck that is on-site every Saturday. The hayrides to the pumpkin-filled field are up and running. The hayrides fill with families and friends all excited for the short ride to the pumpkin patch. Once in the field, everyone gets off and is given as much time as needed to find the perfect pumpkin. Ryanna Giang carefully inspected
each pumpkin. “It’s so hard to pick just one,” says Giang. “This one is pretty cute.” She ripped a round, bright orange pumpkin off the vine. It was her first time at R and J Farms. “I’ll have to come back with my boyfriend. Extra Points with Pete No Time To Die
Sports & Entertainment By Pete Thompson
I
know this is primarily a sports column, but it’s also an entertainment column as well. Add to that the fact that I’m writing this almost immediately after seeing the new James Bond film “No Time To Die” in IMAX at the Tilton Square Theater in Northfield and the headline will make sense. Plus, if you know the history of the movie, you know that Bond fans, like me, have been waiting for this one for a LONG time! I’ll have more about Bond, and actor Daniel Craig, near the end of this column. Since I last wrote, the Eagles lost to their old head coach, but then won (unexpectedly) on the road in Carolina. Also from the NFL, a very popular coach resigns from one of the legacy teams. In basketball, the Sixers appear to have
resolved with a disgruntled star just as the preseason is coming to a close. The Phillies missed the playoffs (again) and as such have dismissed some folks and hired a few as well. The Flyers are done with preseason and their final opening night roster is out as they drop the puck for real on Friday, October 15th to start the season. Locally, it was a surprising finish at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Galloway. Plus, we want to send “get well” wishes to a legendary local high school basketball coach. From entertainment, I mentioned “No Time to Die” at the top of the column and in the headline. I’ll have my thoughts on that outstanding movie. Plus, a CBS franchise that never should have gone away in my opinion, is “reborn”. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● It’s hard in Week 5 to call a game a “make or break” or a “must-win”, but that’s exactly what I think was at stake when the Eagles went to Charlotte last week to play the Carolina Panthers. No matter what happens moving forward against Tampa Bay, the Eagles will now go into that Thursday Night Football game with a 2-3 record instead of an ugly 1-4

mark after winning 21-18 over the Panthers last Sunday. This was a “Charles Dickens” game in my opinion as the Eagles couldn’t look much worse in the first half and trailed 15-6 at the break. However, QB Jalen Hurts came out and ran for two touchdowns in the 2nd half, plus threw for a successful two-point conversion to put the Eagles ahead by three. A key play on special teams was the difference as T.J. Edwards came up with a punt block in the 4th quarter to set the Eagles up with a short field before the go-ahead touchdown. The last time an Eagle blocked a punt? In the Super Bowl Season of 2017 when Kamu Grugier-Hill blocked one against the Giants. I have to highlight the Eagles defense in the win too, as Darius “Big Play” Slay came up with not one, but two interceptions in the game. Corner Steven Nelson also ended any drama as he picked off Sam Darnold to essentially put the game away.
●
●
●
I should also address the previous game as the Eagles lost 42-30 at home to the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes threw 5 touchdowns in that game, three of them to Tyreek Hill, and Andy Reid got his record-setting homecoming. Reid returned to Philadelphia and earned his 100th career win with the Chiefs, becoming the first coach in NFL history to win 100 games with two different teams. Reid’s 140 victories with the Eagles are the most in franchise history. Hurts played his best game as an Eagle in that loss, throwing for a career-high 387 yards and two TDs, but the Chief's loss showed that Philadelphia couldn’t keep up with KC’s high-powered offense. Up next, the defending Super Bowl Champions as Tom Brady and the Bucs come to town. It’s a short week too, and all Tampa comes in 4-1 and off a 45-17 rout of the Miami Dolphins last week. Again, THAT’S why the win over the Panthers was so huge.

Just one more piece of NFL news to pass along and that’s about Jon Gruden as he has resigned as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders after reports surface that he used anti-gay, misogynistic language in multiple emails over ten years. To me, this is a SAD exit for a colorful character who has devoted his life to coaching football. At the same time, the NFL has come a long way since Gruden first came into the league. Each week you see messages in the back of the end zone with things like “End Racism” or “It Takes All of Us”. Heck, the Raiders even have an openly gay player on their roster in Carl Nassib! This move had to be made. No question. Another move that had to be made, at least according to his advisors, is Ben Simmons back in Philadelphia and reporting to the 76ers. As the Sixers played the Brooklyn Nets in a preseason game on the court, Simmons reported to the Wells Fargo Center for a COVID-19 test to start several days of testing required by the NBA for him to return to the team. Simmons held out for the first two weeks of the preseason, but he was costing himself almost $360,000 per game and racked up fines totaling almost 1 million dollars. Remember, Simmons has four

years and $147 million left on his contract. Simmons hadn't spoken directly to team officials since a late August meeting in Los Angeles in which he reiterated his desire for a trade, sources said. He had recently become more open-minded about the possibility of ending his time away from the team and reporting to Philadelphia, but the next step will be him committing to not just a return to the city -- but rejoining the team on the court. Stay tuned. For their part, the Sixers continue to say they would welcome Simmons back. day, October 20th in New Orleans against the Hornets. It is very sad for me to write that once again, the Phillies have missed the playoffs. The Mariners have the longest MLB playoff drought at 19 years, but the Phillies are second as they haven’t played postseason baseball since 2012. And when you miss the playoffs, you have to think there are consequences. The hitting coach, Joe Dillon was fired. He’ll be replaced by Kevin Long, who has a long history with Joe Girardi. Long was Girardi’s hitting coach for seven seasons with the Yankees. Long comes from Washington, where the Nationals led the NL in batting average and topped the majors in on-base percentage during his four years there. There is some good Phillies news, as the team moved closer to keeping the Phillie Phanatic last week as they settled a lawsuit with the mascot’s original creators. The team had sued the creators in 2019 after the creators threatened to obtain an injunction against the team’s use of the mascot and send the snout-nosed, shaggy, flightless green bird into free agency. After roughly two weeks of training camp, six preseason games, and plenty of experimentation with the line combinations, the Flyers’

opening-night roster is set. The team will carry 20 healthy players (12 forwards, six defensemen, and two goaltenders) and an injured Kevin Hayes into its first game of the season on Oct. 15 against the Vancouver Canucks at the Wells Fargo Center. Even though Kevin Hayes is listed on the opening night roster, he’s expected to be out six to eight weeks. Head coach Alain Vigneault says he would have liked to carry more players on the roster into opening night, but because of cap constraints, the team must be creative with their active roster. After all, the Flyers start the season with a four-game home-stand and can call players up from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms if injuries occur. In the hours leading up to the opening roster deadline, the Flyers claimed forward Patrick Brown off of waivers from the Vegas Golden Knights. Brown, 29, has played 33 NHL games (two goals, one assist) spanning five years for the Golden Knights and the Carolina Hurricanes. He’ll probably slide in as a 4th line left-winger, and his arrival meant that prospect Garrett Wilson got sent down to the AHL. Wilson had impressed many during camp.

It’s her second career LPGA victory, and the surprise is not just that she won, but HOW she won. You see, hole #18 at Seaview’s Bay Course is a par-5, so it’s always a birdie hole or better for the professionals. Both Ko and Park had a chance for birdie on 18 to force a playoff and remarkably, BOTH missed their putts! Park is the #3 ranked player in the world and she missed an eight-footer. Ko is the #2 ranked player in the world and she missed a seven-footer. Hey, score one for the Donald Ross greens of the Bay Course at Seaview! A thrilling and surprising

finish to the 2021 event. For my two cents, I LOVED having the tournament back and with FANS too. I liked the cooler temperatures, but hopefully, it returns to the normal June dates next year. My last local sports item is about Paul Rodeo. On October 2nd, St. Augustine sent out a tweet asking for prayers for the longtime basketball coach. Rodeo, 69, is one of the most accomplished high school basketball coaches in the nation. He's coached the Hermits for 44 seasons and leads South Jersey with 968 career wins. Now the tweet did not have specific details about his condition, but I have heard from several folks who say he is on the road to recovery, but that road will not be an easy journey. So, if you’re reading this, take a minute to say a prayer for Coach Rodio, please! As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I have to start with the movie I saw earlier tonight, and that’s “No Time to Die”, the 25th James Bond movie. Let me start by saying a huge THANK YOU to actor Daniel Craig, who for the last 15 years has come to inhabit the character of James Bond better than ANY who went before him, in my opinion. I used to rank the late Roger Moore as my favorite, with

Sean Connery second, but now Craig has vaulted to the top of the class. And to think I was complaining that he was a blonde when he first appeared in “Casino Royale” in 2006…! This movie had everything you wanted in a Bond film and was an amazing way for Craig to bow out of the role. If you haven’t seen it, I won’t spoil anything here, other than to say, make sure you pay close attention as there are several visual and audio homages to former films in the series. Perhaps none more so than “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” which starred George Lazenby. Lastly, the show “CSI” is back on CBS, but it’s back in a reboot called “CSI: Vegas”. It’s hard to believe that the original show went off the air in
2015 and CSI: Cyber was canceled in 2016, so we’ve had five years without a CSI on television. Well, I’m here to tell you, if the writing for CSI: Vegas is as good as the pilot episode, I’m in! Plus, you add in William Petersen and Jorja Fox, and you have me watching! If you’re a fan of the original CSI that ran from 2000 to 2015, make sure you check out CSI: Vegas. If you’ve followed the news lately, you know that this Covid-19 pandemic is not over. It is my continued hope that you stay safe, stay healthy, and when you’re indoors if a place requires you to wear a mask, it’s for a reason. Please lead with KINDNESS. Pete has been the local "sports guy" at the Jersey Shore since 2004. Atlantic City Stories...Books and Beyond The Light with Raymond Tyler
T
he Atlantic City Free Public Library has come a long way since my first visit in the 1970’s. All you could get were books and in the children’s section not even a wide selection (my opinion, not Shore Local’s.) Well, I just got great news for any looking for more information beyond books on the history of Atlantic City. The Atlantic City Free Public Library’s extensive archival collections related to African American history in the city will soon become easier for the public to explore and utilize. The library received a grant of $128,826 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to implement “The City of Dreams: the Atlantic City Experience” project. The project will be the first stage in creating “The Atlantic City Experience Research Library Digital Repos-
itory” to provide a new level of online access to the library’s extensive Atlantic City Heritage Collections. The online repository will make available those collections by digitizing, cataloging and placing text, audio and video content on an internet platform for unlimited access. The initial project will focus on digitization of the African American history collections. The Atlantic City Heritage Collections offer a wide variety of materials documenting African American history from the city’s inception in 1854 to present day. The collections feature dissertations, oral histories and biographies which capture the voices of African Americans who grew up, lived, and worked here. “Digitizing the many collections
concerning African American history in Atlantic City will allow city, the state, the country and the world to see how much African Americans contributed to the growth and the history of the city,” library archivist Jacqueline Silver-Morillo said. To preserve and digitize these resources, the library will contract with Preservica (Preservica.com), an internet cloud-based company, to create an online digital repository. The Atlantic City Experience and Atlantic City Free Public Library websites will be linked to the new repository, allowing persons seeking greater detail about the city’s history to access information 24/7 on the internet. This will greatly improve research services to our historical collections for residents, students, teachers, authors, archivists and re-
searchers throughout the world. Those interested in tracking the progress of the City of Dreams: the Atlantic City Experience project can visit the library’s website – www. acfpl.org – as well as the library’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Please call Silver-Morillo at (609) 345-2269, ext. 3064, for more information. The City of Dreams: the Atlantic City Experience project has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom.

Underrated Italian Wines Wine Time By Nikki Myers
T
his week is an Italian Wine Seminar series in NYC, so I'd be hard-pressed to find anything else worth talking about this week; with Italian wine on my brain, nothing else seems to matter. From the rolling hills of Piedmont to the sunny coastlines of Sardinia, there's simply no region more diverse and refined in its winemaking. While the big hitters are undeniably delectable - Barolo, Barbaresco, Brunello, and even Chianti - there are so many other options that are just as worthwhile, albeit lesser-known. The best part? Lesser-known means lower price tags. Dolcetto - This grape is bountiful across Northern Italy, and is regularly found on family dinner tables across the country. Its name means "little sweet one", but don't be fooled - it's dry, balanced, and well-structured. The charming name refers instead to how much it's adored by both wine-
makers and drinkers. These wines are most often soft, plush, and fruit-forward, but if you opt for a slightly higher priced one from Dogliani, you'll find complexity and aggressive tannin suitable for any fine steak dinner or prestigious occasion. For everyday sipping, I love Fenocchio Dolcetto d'Alba ($15.99), but San Fereolo Dogliani ($27.99) has my heart whenever I want to amp it up a bit. Nebbiolo Some of you may be saying "but Nikki, you said we WOULDN'T be talking about Barolo! Isn't that the grape used to make it? ''You're right! But there is SO much more to Nebbiolo, king of grapes, than just Barolo. (The imaginary reader in my head is now chastising me, exclaiming "JUST Barolo?!. Hear me out, imaginary reader). Outside of the sanctioned Barolo region, Nebbiolo can often be just as dignified at half the price. Nothing will quite compare with true Barolo of course, but not every occasion calls for that either. With a low-key but hearty meal, I love Lang-
he Nebbiolo. These wines are made from the same grape as Barolo, but are younger, a bit fresher, and more approachable for everyday drinking (in both price tag and palate). Some favorites of mine include Aurelio Settimo ($25.99), Deforville ($21.99) and Il Favot Langhe Nebbiolo ($51.99). Nero d'Avola - When someone wants a drinkable, delicious, bargain-priced bottle, I almost always gravitate towards southern Italian reds such as this one. They offer elegance and depth without draining the bank, simply because they haven't (yet) reached the astronomic demand
levels of other Italian Wines. Nero d'Avola is a hero in its native Sicily, offering bright red fruits and generous peppery notes to complement any dish (especially red sauce-based ones). Colosi Rosso ($10.99) is an old favorite, but Feudi del Pisciotto ($26.99) is well worth the extra few bucks. These are, of course, all red wines, but that isn't to say that there aren't myriad white wines worth loving from Italy if that's more your style. Perhaps that will be an article in the future…? Until then, remember I'm only an email away if you need a recommendation - nmyers@passionvines.com. Cheers! Nikki serves as Event Leader and Educator at Passion Vines Wine & Spirit Company, which has provided her countless resources on her wine journey. She estimates that she knows approximately .001% of all there is to know about wine (most notably, the fact that there is an infinite amount of things to know about wine). Most nights, she can be found sipping quirky dry reds from obscure regions.

A Tale of Ghosts, Ghouls and Hauntings in South Jersey By Steffen Klenk
T
he Jersey Shore is known for having family friendly towns with outstanding beaches, cities full of rich history and fun boardwalks. Yet, there is a scary, spooky side to our area, full of shadowy abandoned houses, creepy cemeteries and chilling legends. Seeing that Halloween is just a few weeks away, I’ve chosen to share some information on our local haunted legends. How is a place deemed as being haunted? The history of the building or surrounding area is at the top of the list, followed by who lived there and how the house or land was used. “Spirits” may seek some form of justice or revenge or, perhaps, just wants someone to know of their presence. This is especially true on battlegrounds, cemeteries and old, long closed hospitals and prisons. There are countless legends attached to such places; tales of paranormal activities are shared such as unexplained cold spots, odd smells, creaking or slamming doors, flickering lights and
sounds of footsteps in the dark. There are a considerable amount of places that are described everywhere from Smithville to Cape May, all rich with history. Locally, there are several that stand out. South Jersey is known for the Pine Barrens, which encompasses 1.1 million acres of preserved woodland over seven counties and known as the largest haunted area in all of the state. Within this endless forest are former mining settlements and mills, along with tails of numerous ghosts, and another Jersey-native creature. Often referred to as the Leeds Dev-
il, tales of the infamous Jersey Devil go back as early as the 1700s. Legend has it he is the 13th son of Jane Leeds, and was born as a creature with hooves, wings and a forked tail. Many have reported spotting the creature in various locations throughout Atlantic County, most notably in the Pine Barrens. Cape May is another town full of paranormal occurrences and sightings of numerous apparitions. The Cape received its name from the Dutch Captain Mey, who came upon the peninsula in 1620, a place where the Native American tribes summered. When the Quakers formed the community in 1688, the whailing industry began and more families re-located to the area. Victorian houses and hotels line the beach front streets along with many stories of hundreds of ghosts. Just in time for Halloween, several local towns are currently offering nightly Ghost Tour walks, many telling tales of folklore and old haunts. In
Ocean City, you can take a 90 minute candlelight tour, explore around the city’s Victorian district while listening to stories of the supernatural and learn about the “Alley of the Dead.” There are a number of haunted hayrides that will send chills down your spine, leaving you to wonder what is coming next. Corn mazes provide smiles and fun to both kids and adults. No matter where you may venture this season, have a Happy Halloween. Steffen Klenk is a multimedia journalist. He resides in Ocean City and enjoys capturing the eclectic moments of shore life.

outh Jersey native, Billy Joe Michel never envisioned a future as a professional artist. Art was a constant in her life during adolescence, throughout her years as a Psychology major at Temple University, and into adulthood. From painting to embroidery, Billy Joe found comfort in creativity, however, she always treated art as a hobby. That is, until 2009, when she was pregnant with her firstborn daughter, Ava. It was during that season that Billy Joe’s life began to evolve and her natural artistic gifts were brought front and center. Billy Joe’s good friend, a fellow artist by the name of Ashley Buttercup, was a driving force for Billy when it came to taking her art seriously. After taking part in an art show alongside Ashley, Ashley’s father insisted on buying Billy’s painting. That was the launching pad for Billy Joe, as she began to envision her life as a paid artist. Since then, visual art has become her microphone. It is on that artistic mic that Billy brings awareness to the social issues that weigh heavy on her heart. Her paintings have become a platform for storytelling and education on topics such as the fight against racism, social injustice, and life as a single mother. The “Trail Her Trash Commandments,” a 10 piece art exhibit that Billy Joe created for Art Basel in Miami, was her first large-scale conversation
piece. The exhibit chronicled Now, as she is entering a new snippets of her life’s story that season in life, one filled with are often seen as taboo. Local Picnic Company Makes Parties Pretty By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer

li Nolan works to make dreams come true. Yes, really. To clarify, Nolan put her quarantine hobby to good use by starting a business that creates “pretty and cohesive picnics.” The young woman from Margate has always loved “making things pretty.” Her family would recruit her for decorating the dinner table, or organizing a beautiful holiday meal. Her twin sister challenged Nolan to creatively set up events on the beach, turning her talents into a source of income. In 2020, Ali Nolan established the South Jersey Picnic Company, an organization that prepares tables spreads for picnics, topping off special events for her customers. Ali loves her work. She has done a variety of events, including birthdays, anniversaries, micro-weddings, baby showers, and marriage proposals. “I get so giddy and nervous hiding behind the dunes as I watch the proposal,” said Nolan. “I make each one special and unique. It’s my honor to be
a part of such an important memory.” While she primarily organizes picnics on the beach (“capitalizing on the picture-perfect setting”), South Jersey Picnic Company can set up almost anywhere. In the winter, Nolan has created beautiful moments indoors or near fireplaces. “Picnics are so unique,” said Nolan. “There is nothing like walking over and being awed by the setup. I will

Prices depend on specifics of desired events. Ali Nolan challenges readers to create beautiful tablescapes and put a little extra loveliness into get-to-
gethers. “Inspirations boards are so helpful,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to try different locations, and collect little decor items that, when accumulated with the other bits, centering around a theme, they all come together to make something magical.” To learn more about the South Jersey Picnic Company or book a picnic, check out southjerseypicniccompany.com.

The Forgotten Adventure Village
W
hile many local places in and around Atlantic City no longer exist, they are still very much alive in the hearts of people old enough to remember. The fun memories seem to last longer. Adventure Village was a minor amusement park just down the road from Storybook Land in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. For many years, the decayed remains of this once-bustling tourist attraction could just barely be seen behind the thick foliage while stuck in traffic on the Black Horse Pike. What exactly was Adventure Village? It would seem a bit unusual in its attractions if open today. Unlike the thrill rides that populate fun parks now, where intensity is key and a headache by the end of the day is inevitable, Adventure Village was made up of more mellower fare. There was a Model T ride and a rickety old train that rode through the woods. There was a diamond mine where, I’m guessing, children were given faux spades and pick-axes to simulate how treasure hunting in the nineteenth century was done. There was an imprisoned convict named “Slippery Sam” who would converse with children behind bars and occa-

But there is a kind of unique charm about a place like Adventure Village with themes more about capturing the essence of a chaotic yet charming zeitgeist like the Wild West, rather than seeing how many people its rides made sick. Adventure Village is gone now. In 2009, the property was bought and torn down. An Auto Lenders is in its place. I find this a great tragedy for

two reasons: the first being that vintage things and places are in demand more so now than ever before, and it probably would have made a killing if it was refurbished; secondly, and more importantly, it would have been eligible to become a historic spot. According to the National Register of Historic Places, a property can reach its historic status when it is 50 years old or older. The irony is that in 2009, when Adventure Village was destroyed, it turned 50. There is nothing to be done about the now-extinct Adventure Village.
It’s gone. It does offer a good lesson, though. Sometimes what the past has to offer is better than what the future wants to replace it with. A place like Adventure Village may not be as exciting as Six Flags or Disney World, but that’s not the point and never was the point to begin with. The point was anthropological and historical. The point was about vicariousness and experiencing a time different than are own. And with the hyper-reality we all live in today (whether we like it or not), Adventure Village might have offered a good remedy.

Choosing a good funeral home, part 2 By Andrew Hoffman
I
n my last column, I pointed out how in a time of great need, your experience (both good and bad) is magnified. One way to ensure your satisfaction is to be an informed customer. Know what services are available and the different ways it can be conducted. When you go to a funeral service, certainly pay your respects, but pay attention to the little details of how things are being done. What is the urn or casket like, or is there simply a portrait there? How are the flowers displayed? Are there enough chairs for everyone? How friendly and helpful is the funeral director and staff. If you as a consumer do this whenever you go to a service that is not being handled by the “normal funeral home your family uses” and you will get an understanding of the other options and services available to you by different firms. The bottom line is just because you used a funeral home in the past does not mean you are obligated to use them in the future. Insist on the best.
OK, we have talked about not waiting until the last minute to choose a funeral firm and not choosing a funeral firm with indifference as opposed to preference, but now I am going to tackle the third biggest issue when it comes to picking a funeral firm. Don’t base your decision SOLELY on price! I am sure you have heard the term you get what you pay for. This has never been truer than in funeral service. I get many a phone call asking how much a service costs. My honest response to every inquiry is “well what is it you want to do in your funeral/burial/cremation/service” What I mean is that the costs are mostly under the consumers control, based on their choices. To put it another way, how much is a car? Well, is it a Cadillac or Toyota and does it have roll down windows? See you next issue. Andrew B. Hoffman is a funeral director at Jeffries and Keates and Keates-Plum Funeral Homes. He is a twenty-two year veteran of the funeral industry.
Homemade Costumes on a Budget
By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer
W
ant to wow your neighborhood or everyone at your best friend’s house party? You can be a wizard of costume design! Here are eight fun and easy ideas:
Aviator
This is a timeless classic that works for both guys and gals. Find yourself a big cardboard box and cut a hole on the bottom (big enough for your body to fit inside). Cut the side flaps of the box into rounded wings, and cut the front and back flap off completely. Use leftover cardboard to cut into two 16 inch long ovals and glue them crossing over each other in the middle. Glue that to the front of your box. Paint your plane bright red and add some white stripes to the wings. Use duct tape to create suspenders to hang your plane over your abdomen. Dress in a leather jacket with aviator sunglasses and
hang your plane on your shoulders. Fly high, pilot!
Scary Spider
Give your friends the creepy-crawlies with this simple outfit. Purchase three pool noodles and cut them each in half. Spray-paint them black, covering the entire surface. Once the paint has dried, cut a small hole on each long end of the noodle halves.

↘Continued from 51 Run a black string through the holes, tying knots at each end. Dress in all black, and for some extra zest, paint a spider web around one eye using face paint. Tie the ends of the strings to your wrist and the other end to your upper arm. Now you have eight legs that move with you! Eek!
Rainy Day
This cute costume works in all weather! Purchase a large beach hat, and glue cotton balls to the top and sides, creating a cloud hat. Cut large raindrops out of blue felt, and hang them on all sides of the cloud hat. Wear all black and some colorful rain boots, and add your cloud hat. For an extra touch, carry an umbrella!
Cereal Killer
For a funny spin on a real-life horror, duct tape small boxes of cereal to a gray shirt. Stick white plastic knives in each box, and drip red paint down the sides. Add jeans and sneakers, and you’re ready to go! Carry a large bowl for collected candy!
Hippie
This is an easy look for kids and adults. Pair a tie-dye shirt with either bell-bottom pants or a buckskin skirt. Add clogs or platform boots and sunglasses, and you’re ready to groove!
52
Librarian
Another easy costume. Find a white button-down shirt and plain trousers or a skirt. Pair with high socks and loafers, and make sure to carry books! If you add a cardigan or blazer, keep a library card in your pocket. Don’t forget your glasses! You’ll soon be ready to keep the party quiet and orderly.
Ice Cream Cone
This costume involves a big puffy skirt! Find a white, brown, or pink dress with a flowy skirt (or add a tutu of the same color). Cut out ovals in different colored craft paper and tape them all over the dress like sprinkles. Paint an old-fashioned cone party hat tan or light brown. Combine these pieces with colorful shoes, and you’ll look sweet!
Bandit
Steal the show with this crazy costume! Throw on a black-and-white striped shirt and black pants. Don’t forget to wear black shoes as well. Using a long piece of black cloth, cut eye holes proportional to your face, and tie around your head, over your nose. Carry white pillowcases with money signs drawn on them. No one will mess with you!

Golfing a Round at Seaview Bay
By Sean Fawcett and Pete Thompson
G
olfing a round at the remarkable Seaview Bay Golf Course is a day of walking through history. This is the site of World Golf Hall of Famer Sam Snead’s first ever major championship, the 1942 PGA, and home course of the ShopRite LPGA Classic . Walking this course were Hall of Famers, major champions and Tour greats including Annika Sorenstam, Sei Re Pak, Karrie Webb, Betsy King, Nancy Lopez, Anna Nordqvist, Lexi Thompson, Paula Creamer, Stacy Lewis and Laura Davies. This is also where many US Presidents, stars of music, film and television and other dignitaries played. Seaview Bay is very simply a glorious trip right down Memory Lane. On top of the history, it’s an incredible world-class golf course that anyone can get to play. Opened in 1914 and designed by two of Golf’s architectural giants Hugh Wilson (Merion) and Donald Ross (Pinehurst No.2) the linksstyled Seaview Bay plays right along Route 9 in Galloway. It sprawls out to Reed’s Bay with breath-taking views of nearby Atlantic City across the
way. Framed with its infamous and typically very tall fescue and mounds. It challenges play with large sandy waste areas, deep bunkers and sloping round greens. Seaview Bay is a classic seaside Scottish British Openlike layout that challenges everyday golfers today, just as much as it has the world’s very best for more than a century. “ We all know that the Bay Course at Seaview is not long, so it’s only defense against low scores is the Donald Ross greens,” said Pete Thompson. “ I

also love the FEEL of the golf course as the Hugh Wilson design is pretty straight forward with no blind shots and very few forced carries. But keep the ball in play,” he adds. “If you’re not accurate, you can end up in thick rough, or even worse. That generally results in ‘bye-bye golf ball!.” Anytime I play Seaview, which is fairly often, I get the weird, but satisfying feeling of getting to walk in the very footsteps of one of my golfing heroes, Sam Snead, and all the terrific LPGA players who annually compete

here. Besides nearby Atlantic City Country Club, founded in 1897 and which has hosted three USGA US Women’s Open championships (one of which won by LPGA founder and Hall of Fame player Babe Dickrickson-Zaharias), Seaview is the oldest. It just about the only other course at the entire Jersey Shore, where you can get that experience and close your eyes and imagine playing a round of golf more than a hundred years ago when men wore hats and jackets and ties to play with wooden shafted mashies and niblicks. “The Bay Course is a gem of an old school golf course with so many great pieces of history that have taken place here” notes Seaview Hotel and Golf Club PGA Director of Golf Alex McGann. “From Sam Snead winning his first Major Championship when Seaview played host to the 1942 PGA Championship, to the elite private club history playing host to prominent industry professionals and Presidents as well as our continued legacy in hosting the best in women’s golf every year with the ShopRite LPGA Classic, Seaview is truly a special place to not only golf, but soak in rich golf history across all 36 holes,” he added.

Simon Lupo to reveal a more serious side in her one-woman show
“S
ometimes I’m OK” by playwright and standup comedian Randi Simon Lupo will make its Somers Point debut in the area’s newest arts space – studio;space – from Friday to Sunday, Oct. 15 to 17. “Sometimes I’m OK”, directed by Karen Case Cook, debuted five years ago at Manhattan’s The Producers Club. Since then, it was selected for the International United Solo Festival, and has been performed in Central and North Jersey, as well as to sold out crowds at the Cape May Aerodrome and the Cape May Fringe Festival -- the latter of which she was invited to attend by Cape May playwright and producer Bill Sterritt. Studio;space is Sterritt’s new multi-purpose venue and where his “Wreck of the Spanish Armada” played last month. He was anxious to bring Lupo back to the area but for a different audience. “The classics are great, of course, but I love to introduce audiences to newer material, such as Randi’s ‘Sometimes I’m OK’,” Sterritt says. Lupo, who has been performing standup comedy consistently for 12 years, has done her act on various stages such as Comix at Foxwoods, The New York Comedy Club, Gotham Comedy Club, Broadway Comedy Club, and The Metropolitan Room in New York City and Catch A Rising Star–Princeton. Presently she describes herself as a “comedian who wrote a play”, and her brave performance in “Sometimes” is proof that she isn’t afraid to show a more serious side.
“I wanted to tell a story where there’s no pressure to be funny. People do laugh at times. But I cannot categorize it as a comedy – I’m a comedian doing a more serious show,” she explains of her autobiographical, “kaleidoscope” show, which illustrates various instances of her life from the heartbreaking to the heart touching. Lupo grew up one of four kids in Brooklyn, with a demanding father who expected his children to be successful at everything, and a mother who valued beauty above all else. At a young age, Lupo was diagnosed with scoliosis and several learning disabilities, which forced her to develop her own unique coping mechanisms. Growing up, she attended numerous therapy sessions and befriended many therapists along the way. The one-woman show was something she says she “had to do” and was, ultimately, very healing for her. “Nobody comes out of childhood unscathed -- everybody has different experiences. You didn’t go through what I went through, I didn’t go through what you went through …,” says Lupo, who currently resides with her husband, the show’s executive producer, Patrick Mirucki in Central Jersey. “The point is that you can be OK. It can really be OK.” “Sometimes” runs 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15 and 16; and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 16 and 17. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased through Eventbrite.com. Studio;space is at 112 Woodland Ave. in Somers Point. More information can be found at SometimesImOK.com or Facebook.com/ sometimesimok.

Remembering Mays Landing's Nudest Park
By Mari D'Albora Dattolo
N
inety years ago, Mays Landing made news in the New York Times with the opening of Sunshine Park. Located on a riverfront tract on Mays Landing-Somers Point Road, it became a weekend getaway for as many as 750 practicing nudist families. Men, women and children would stay in cabins, enjoying the natural

The famous nudist park was co-founded in the 1930s during the heyday of the naturalist movement by Dr. Ilsley Boone, referred to as "Uncle Danny," a minister and geologist. He published the first American nudist magazine, The Nudist, which later be-

came Sunshine & Health. The magazine was published by his Sunshine Publishing Company. The park was purchased in the early 1960's by psychologist Oliver York for $120,000. In it's last years, the property drew the interest of a casino owner who offered $2 million, however a sale did not materialize. Eventually neighbors became critical of Sunshine Park, insisting township officials crack down on the facility, citing health violations for overwhelmed sanitary systems. A judge eventually ordered the park closed in 1983. In end the property was left to be reclaimed by nature.
