A

tlantic City’s “Buddy” Grover turned 94 years young on Monday, September 24th. Buddy has been serving as a volunteer lightkeeper at the top of the Absecon Lighthouse since 2009, and is beloved by residents of Atlantic County and lighthouse visitors.

Buddy greets visitors at the top of Absecon Lighthouse which he climbs 3 times at week. The Absecon Lighthouse is a located in the north end of Atlantic City, overlooking Absecon Inlet. At 171 feet it is the tallest lighthouse in the state of New Jersey and the third-tallest masonry lighthouse in the United States.

Stories are the Patchwork of Life Letter from the editor

O

ne of my earliest memories was playing with my grandmother's patchwork quilts. I was either hiding in them or draping them over a table to make a secret clubhouse. I would wrap my dolls and even my cat up in them. Sometimes I simply threw the quilts in a heap, sat in them and pretended I was a bird in my nest.

As the years went by, I grew up, but the quilts remained. We came to refer to them as the "Grammy blankets" and stored them in a nearby closet.

I can still hear my parents voice, " You're cold? Or sick? Get a Grammy Blanket." Sometimes we pulled one out simply because we were feeling nostalgic. They were hand sewn by my grandmother, Grammy Agnes during the Great Depression.

Needless to say, they weren't pretty or fancy, but kept her family warm.

The colorful quilt was made from whatever scraps of fabric Grammy could find. Over many years, they became faded, worn and frayed. They also become more comforting.

I believe our lives are like those patchwork quilts, made up of all of our experiences, the things we create and the stories we tell. Stories are what we do best at Shore Local. As a team we tell YOUR stories - features about the people, places and events that make up our community. Sometimes when I am working on our website, I am flabbergasted by the sheer number of stories we have shared since we began publishing, five and a half years ago.

The people I've met along the way and the ability to share their stories is my favorite part of my job.

Shore Local is SO much more than just my stories. It is Krystle Bailey, who along with hundreds of other features, told the story of segregation on the Atlantic City beach and how historians are preserving the iconic Chicken Bone Beach and something beautiful has come from it. Another contributor is Steffan Established 2016

Klenk, who meticulously coordinates all of the events and entertainment listings, writes features, takes photos and keeps us informed of all that is happening in the region.

Shore Local is Nancy Adler, who offers awesome advice on nutrition and wellness and Jeff Whitaker, whose personal takes on life inspire and encourage us. It is experts

in their field like and Bonnie Dodd-Miller, Joe Massaglia, and Elisa Jo Eagan that share their experiences and insights.

Shore Local is Raymond Tyler and Pete Thompson, both masters of story-telling. It is Chuck Eberson who uses humor to share his "Senior Moments." It is my daughter Sarah, who visited every coffee shop in Ocean City (and Absecon Island) and detailed every flavor of each signature drink. It is Donald Kravitz who photographs the biggest stars and the babies at the baby parade and generously shares it all. It is Marc Berman, who adds expertise and a little spice and humor to our talk radio show.

At Shore Local, we aren’t trying to communicate news. We are telling stories. Our writers paint a picture of our neighborhood in rose colors and pastels, and I am proud of the work they are doing.

We wouldn’t be the same without them. To our writers, thank you for contributing to our little magazine.

What first sparked your interest in this tragedy of 1880?

Approximately five years ago, I discovered an abandoned train station off Main Street on Taylor Avenue in Mays Landing. The following year I was coordinating the Annual Ghost Walk for Halloween. I wanted to include the station and reenact a train wreck. What I didn't know at the time was that a collision had actually occurred there and it was much more severe than anyone in our (century) realized. My journey of discovery began in the form of a newspaper article from the New York Times the day following the collision, mentioning three fatalities. I found that the railbed existed in several areas, including outside of Funny Farm Animal Sanctuary on Railroad Boulevard and the course of Bikeway East on West Jersey Avenue. I was consumed with the story from then on.

Given the magnitude of the train wreck and casualties, why do you think it did not gain greater press coverage?

Studying the connection from the records in the state archives to court records of the inquests, lead me to coin the phrase: "When the rails ruled the roads and class determined privilege".

This was America in the Second Industrial Age, also known as the Technological Revolution. Transportation and communication systems were coming into development, and factories provided the necessary workforce at minimal cost. These prominent (industrialist) owners of the late 19th century could be ruthless in their business practices. Sadly, their influence also had power over the Press; how much information they chose to release and whether they elected to fully disclose details of the events.

What was life like in Mays Landing in the 1880s? Is it true the number of casualties/injured was greater than the entire population of Mays Landing? Were there first responders? Did the residents become the first responders?

In 1880, Mays Landing was a small village. Prior to 1865, their principal

livelihood was farming and maritime trading. In 1837 Mays Landing was established as Atlantic County’s center of government.

Following the Civil War, The Mays Landing Water Power Company cotton mill joined the county government as a powerful force in the community.

When the mill opened it immediately became the town's largest employer, providing work for roughly a quarter of the town's residents. By the late 1880s, the plant employed over 200 men, women and children, a figure that rose to approximately 300 throughout the 1890s.

When the railroad spur from Newfield was added in June of 1880, it’s purpose was twofold. Excursion trips were chartered from the city to the shore and the cotton mill, owned by the same company, would have the capability of moving their products more expeditiously to their destinations.Today remnants of the loading dock still remain on a abandoned lot across from the Mays Landing Firehouse.

The tragedy itself occurred the seventh week in operation on August 11, 1880. Two trains carrying upwards of 1300+ passengers from Philadelphia collided over the trestle bridge in Mays Landing.

The population of the town nearly equaled the number of travelers that were then stranded following the mishap. The entire town came out with a spirit of hospitality and urgency to assist their stranded city neighbors. The villagers opened their homes, providing shelter, blankets, first aid care and emergency services.

The Mays Landing Fire Department would not be established until 1894.

The severity of the emergency became clear with the first casualty, James Sweeney. He had been on

the back platform on the first train when he was crushed by the second locomotive.

More fatalities ensued, most from the scalding steam of the locomotive with temperatures upwards of 200 degrees.

Logistically, in your opinion, was the Pennsylvania Railroad at fault?

What changed to ensure it did not reoccur?

The designation of ‘Historical Narrative’ provides the writer creative license while presenting the facts.

It keeps the conclusion open ended, leaving the interpretation of the events up to the reader’s imagination.

Fall Drinks To Bring Out the Vibrancy of Autumn Season

rinks make or break a moment. When you take that first sip of something sweet or strong, you’ll feel the vibe of any space in any season. Whether you’re at a local bar drinking cold beer, sipping an iced coffee as you pursue a boutique, or slurp tea on a cold winter night, you’ll be sure to remember that moment.

As October is upon us, enchant your life with autumn vibes and stir up some yummy drinks that’ll make you want to jump in a pile of leaves or wear a blanket scarf:

Pumpkin Chai Latte

Ingredients: ● 1 cup of Teavana chai powder ● 2 cups of Milk of choice (I recommend oat milk) ● 3 tbsp of cinnamon ● 2 tbsp of nutmeg ● 2 tbsp of ground cloves

¼ cup of pumpkin puree ¼ cup of maple syrup In a saucepan, heat milk over medium heat for three minutes. Whisk in chai powder, spices, pumpkin and syrup. Stir slowly until the mixture comes to a boil. Turn off heat and serve in a mug with a cinnamon stick garnish. Delicious!

3 oz. of bourbon Cranberries for garnish In a cocktail shaker, add cider, juice and whiskey with a cup of ice. Shake vigorously and pour into a chilled glass. Top with loose cranberries and serve cold.

Salted Caramel Mocha

Ingredients: ● 2 shots of espresso ● 3 tbsp of caramel sauce ● 2 tbsp of cocoa powder ● 1 cup of milk of choice, frothed ● Whipped Cream ● Chocolate drizzle Pour espresso into a large mug.

Add caramel sauce and cocoa powder, stirring evenly. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk milk until it’s warm, thick and foamy. Pour milk into a mug and stir. Top drink with whipped cream, caramel and chocolate drizzle. Enjoy!

Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned

Ingredients: ● 1 cup of pecans ● ½ cup of whiskey ● 2 oz. of bitters ● 4 sugar cubes Toast pecans on a sheet pan in a 400 degree oven for 10 minutes. Once cooked, remove from the oven and let cool completely.

Pour in a mason jar with whiskey, cap screwed tightly on. Let whiskey infuse with nutty flavor for three to four days. Once flavored, remove pecans from whiskey and throw them away. In an Old Fashioned glass, muddle bitters with sugar and add ice. Pour whiskey over top and stir. Add a cherry and orange peel as garnish. Drink this seasonal delight!

Ingredients: ¼ cup of cherry juice concentrate ● 1 cup of oat milk ● 2 tsp of rosewater ● ¼ cup of ashwagandha powder ● 2 tsp of ground ginger ● 1 tbsp of beetroot, powdered Combine ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Turn off heat when milk becomes thick and frothy.

Pour into a mug and enjoy. Moon milk is known for making someone sleepy, so enjoy it in the evening and sleep well! ●

Fire Safety Tips to Keep You and Your Family Safe

N

ational Fire Prevention Week is just around the corner, and thanks to the help of local firefighters, children throughout the area will learn life-saving information and get first-hand safety demonstrations.

The campaign began in October 1925, the same month as the Great Chicago Fire.

More than 17,000 buildings were destroyed in the blaze.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), more than 27% of all fires reported between 2014 and 2018 occurred inside of homes. The leading cause of most of these incidents stemmed from cooking, with Thanksgiving being the peak day for cooking fires.

Each year, the NFPA hosts Fire Prevention Week, an event dedicated to educating and informing the public with fire safety tips and instructions to keep you, and others around you, safe. The NFPA website provides the most up-to-date information, with lesson plans, activities for the kids, interactive games, tip sheets,s, and demonstrational videos.

This year’s campaign encourages ev-

eryone to learn the sounds of fire safety.

When you hear a beep, or a chirping sound, coming from your smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm, it is a clear indicator that the batteries need to be changed. The NFPA recommends changing the batteries to your smoke alarm every six months. Be sure to have a smoke alarm on each level of your home, inside your bedroom(s) or in your hallway, and be sure to test the alarms every month to ensure they are working.

Having a home fire escape plan is also essential. Make sure you have at least two means of escaping for all rooms. If you see or smell smoke, stay as low to the ground as you can and crawl safely to your exit. While encountering doors, experts recommend placing the back of your hand against the doorknob, or the sides of the door. If it feels hot to the touch, this means there is a fire on the other side of the door, and it is not a means of escape. The most important tip is to be prepared. Practicing a fire escape plan twice a year will help you prepare in the event of an actual emergency.

The most important thing to remember is to stay out of the home once you have left and not to return for missing items, pets, or other people. Get out safely, and

bout 500 Jeeps will roll down the boardwalk on Sunday, Oct. 3 and remain on display in lines that stretch from Fifth Street to 14th Street. The Ocean City NJ Jeep Invasion runs from noon to 5 p.m. The event raises money for local charities, and trophies are awarded to the best Jeeps in various categories with trophies awarded at 4 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. People listened to Kurtz and many bought their first car in 1921 from him.

The Model T touring car cost $355, while the top of the line model could be purchased for $645. Kurtz reported 70% of cars sold were purchased with some sort of financing.

Crafting Cocktails with Fire Wine Time

s the air outside cools, we seek our annual rituals of warmth and comfort. You might start to dig out your sweaters from storage, burrow your cold toes under your partner on the couch, or my personal favorite: sit around a warm

This article could easily just be a 550-word ode to fire, but I’m here to teach all of you about cocktails. Let’s learn how to incorporate flames into our favorite boozy beverages.

Charred garnishes: A few years back while bartending with Bobby G. (renowned master mixologist for Jim Beam) at The Right Notes, I saw him flame an orange peel with a torch to garnish a drink and I was totally hooked. The possibilities for flamed garnishes are endless,

Any citrus peel is fair game, but I've also had a ton of success with grilled thyme and rosemary, and even charred jalapeño peppers on the rims of margaritas. It's as simple as it sounds - simply hit your citrus peel garnish with a kitchen torch or lay your herbs/fruit/veggies across a grill until it's got a nice char. The new aromas it adds to your drink will astound you.

Smoking: Smoked cocktails have become all the rage in high end uptown bars, but you don't need fancy equipment or a swanky venue to pull it off. Watching the process is enthralling, and executing it yourself will make you feel like a cocktail king. You can find a decent smoking gun for less than 30 bucks, but it isn't even necessary. It requires some practice, but all you need to do is trap your smoke of choice in a container, then add your cocktail, give it a gentle shake, and pour it out into your serving glass. You can use smoke from any smoldering material cinnamon sticks, tea leaves, wood chips….. use your imagination! There are plenty of great tutorials online if you need a video, but once you get the hang of it, this is a game-changer.

House, as it was originally named, was built in 1764 by Presbyterian residents under the supervision of John Branard, a “patriot of the revolution,” as the church’s website explains. When the Meeting House was converted to a church, it was shared by the Methodists, and then bought completely by them in 1814.

Today, the church consists of the original building and an additional brick building added when the church expanded in 1822. The brick building was erected under the original budget of $1,525.95.

Today, the church is led by Reverend Keith Roller, a Ventnor local and licensed pastor since 2017. Zion United Methodist Church has offered a variety of public events over the years, including a live Nativity scene and concerts on their back field and newly-built outdoor stage.

The church also runs a food pantry, available to anyone facing food insecurity in the region.

From Ocean City To Nashville, Casey Cattie Has Made Her Mark

or Casey Cattie, getting crowned Junior Miss Ocean City in 2009 was just the beginning of her journey. It was a moment she has never forgotten.

When interviewed recently, Casey recalled giving advice to the next Junior Miss Ocean City: “As I was walking up the ramp to the boardwalk, I passed Junior Miss Ocean City walking down the ramp. I stopped and said to her ‘enjoy yourself’ as I did when I was Junior Miss Ocean City. It was a great memory.”

During the summer of 2014, a friend of mine mentioned Cattie to me and asked if I knew her or had ever heard her sing. He explained that she is a singer and songwriter who was promoting her talents over social media.

A few weeks later, Cattie and I had the occasion to meet at the Ocean City Music Pier. At that time, she was going to college for nursing. She told me “I have always loved to sing and have been posting some cover songs on social media, but I really want to sing the songs I write. I write new songs all the time.” Cattie announced to me that she was moving to Nashville to pursue songwriting as a career while finishing her college education. At the age of nineteen, she took that big step in May of 2014.

Cattie returned to the Shore this past summer. I recently had the opportunity to meet with her again and get updated on her latest endeavors.

Cattie told me that while in Nashville, she graduated from Belmont University in 2017 and embarked on her music career by writing songs for other artists. I asked her if she had pursued a singing career as well. Cattie smiled and replied “Yes and no.”

“Every now and then I would sing in some of the Nashville bars, but I always felt nervous about getting up in front of an audience, so I spent most of my time writing songs for others,”

Cattie explained. “At the same time, I had to earn a living. So I accepted a job at a record company as an event administrator, which gave me great insight into the other side of the music business. I loved singing, so I do not know why singing in front of an audience made me uneasy.”

Overcoming her reluctance to sing her own songs, Casey Cattie decided this spring (2021) that she was going to record and post on Spotify a song she had written called “ex-whatever” (https:// open.spotify.com/artist/5TjQHpwFAlIEKv5piFHm2S), which took off immediately with over 10,000 views and has continued to climb the playlist.

“I have spent seven years chasing my dream, and have enjoyed every single minute. It was a great time in my life. I became upset after my Spotify experience because I waited so long to make the leap to singing my own songs,” Cattie remarked about the experience.

Casey Cattie also is not focusing solely on music as a career. “I also realized that I have to plan out my future, so I came back and enrolled in college to get a second degree in Nursing. I will graduate in October as an RN which will fit into my life plan easily. It is my hope to be able to work twelve-hour shifts, three days a week as an RN, and spend the other four days fulfilling my musical dreams,” she explained.

Right now, at age twenty-six, Casey Cattie is enjoying her life both in Ocean City and Nashville. Once she graduates, she will make the decision whether to return to Nashville or stay in this area.

Time will tell, but either way, she has a bright and exciting future ahead of her.

here is nothing more synonymous with 1950s and 60s Las Vegas than “The Rat Pack.” They were highly regarded as the group to see in the 1960s, and are credited with putting Las Vegas on the map. The Rat Pack was a group of talented actors and musicians who had hugely successful careers. The troop had several iterations over the course of its existence.

However, the most recognized members are without a doubt Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. Each artist is critically acclaimed in their own right. Together, however, they were international sensations.

At the height of their success in the mid-1960s, they dominated the Las Vegas strip and helped Vegas become

the modern resort and gambling destination that it is today. Although all members have now passed on, their legacy continues to influence music today.

Vegas may have been where they were most known for performing. However, they performed all over the country, and it was none other than Atlantic City where the group honed their acts before heading out to Vegas. The legendary group has been revived at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino (1000 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, 08401) in the show “The Rat Pack: Back in Town” from now through New Year’s Eve every Sunday at 4 pm.

The Broadway-style production will feature a 12-piece orchestra comprised of a rhythm section, four or five horns and strings, and a baby grand piano for a memorable evening of music, comedy, and entertainment.

such as “Fly Me to the Moon,” “New York, New York,” and “That’s Amore,” to name a few.

The show comprises award-winning Brian Duprey as Frank Sinatra, who encapsulates the spirit of the late, great actor and singer the entire performance. Duprey has been perfecting his impression for several years, including in a minor role in “Get Him to the Greek” featuring Russel Brand and Jonah Hill. Internationally recognized entertainer Joe Scalissi plays Dean Martin and is often dubbed the most authentic and accurate Martin impersonator in the USA. Kenny Jones portrays Sammy Davis Jr., and his performances have gained nothing but positive reviews. “His tribute to Sammy Davis Jr. beyond belief. Stage presence, talent, audience engagement, all A-Plus!” said Don Newbury. Finally, Duprey’s wife, Jami, portrays bombshell Marilyn Monroe, and even performs “Happy Birthday Mr. President” for one audience member, as Monroe so famously did for President Kennedy. There is also a sensational group of dancers who help bring the entire performance alive and make you feel like you have been transported back to the 1960s.

The three prominent members were not only known for their melodic singing voices when they performed.

They were also well-known for their onstage personalities, which saw charismatic back and forth banter between them, boasting hilarious comedic chemistry which illuminated their brotherhood and undeniable rapport.

both memorable and heart-warming.

With the global success The Rat Pack had, it is no surprise that their music has stayed popular in the decades since they formed. Helping Children Process Grief Moms Vibe:

his Mom’s Vibe is straight from the heart.

Every time I open my social media, there is another “Rest In Peace'' post from one of my friends. The weight of the world feels heavy, as everyone around us is experiencing heartache, loss, and trauma in some way. As parents, experiencing our children’s grief can often be more heart wrenching than our own sadness.

I recently lost someone I love deeply. My children lost their beloved Pop-Pop this month. After a conversation with my six-year-old son, I took to Facebook to ask other parents about their experience with helping children process grief. The responses were heartbreaking, hopeful, and incredibly helpful. Mothers who had lost spouses, parents, and children all jumped in to offer resources and words of encouragement.

One look at Facebook tells me that

so many children are experiencing a version of what mine are. The RIP messages are abundant and heartbreak is one thing we are not experiencing a shortage of. I am no grief professional.

I am experiencing it in real-time as I write this. I am just a mom who knows that other moms need this information. I’ve collected the resources that were shared with me to pass along to you in hopes that someone reading will feel comforted by them.

Normalize Emotions The common thread weaved throughout each response was to normalize what our children are feeling.

Create space for them to feel anything that needs to come up. If they need to be sad, let them. If they need to be angry, confused, frustrated, or if they need to just go play, let them. In addition to normalizing their emotions, allow them to be witnesses to yours.

It is common for parents to hide their emotions from their children, however allowing them to see our sadness gives them permission to fully feel their own.

As hard as it is to see our children sad, it is a healthy part of the full human experience. Do your best to put each feeling into words, explaining to your

Resources I am confident that available resources are endless. One of the first things I did for my children and my nephews was notify their teachers and guidance counselors. I explained to my kids that the counselors are available to them at any time during their school day.

The Alcove Center in Galloway offers grief support for children of all ages, adults, and families. Founded in 2001 by social workers Pat Smith and Mindy Shemtov, Alcove offers a variety of counseling services including telehealth meetings. Visit www.thealcove. org for more information.

Sesame Street has been a go-to resource for elementary education, inclusion, and love for decades. Grief support is no different. Sesame Street in Communities features a lineup of videos with our favorite characters discussing grief and loss. Grief is the hardest human experience. There are no rules, there is no timeline, and certainly no expiration date. They say raising children takes a village and I am certainly thankful for mine. I hope that if you are experiencing grief within your family that this column may serve as a small dose of comfort for you and your family.

Create Memorials Create a memorial garden or memory box for your loved one. Involve the children, asking them to collect pictures and items that remind your child of the person that they lost. This can include drawings, printed pictures, ornaments, or anything that makes your child feel connected. Conversation topics often arise through art.

Look for opportunities to have healthy conversations.

Place the memorial in a special place and invite your children to explore it regularly, explaining that we can keep our family member’s memory alive by continuing to talk about them.

Let the child lead as much as possible, offering prompting questions such as “what was your favorite thing to do with _____?”

Read Books The most commonly suggested book for grieving children was The Invisible String by Patrice Karst. This inspiring book is great for loss as well as separation anxiety or a simple reminder that we are all connected. In The Invisible String, the mother explains to her two children that we are always connected to the ones we love through an invisible string tied to our hearts.

It’s Always Labor Day At Boardwalk Hall’s New Atlantic City Labor Museum The Light with Raymond Tyler

F

or decades, Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City has been a source of fun and laughs for me (and I’m sure most of you

as well).

I attended my first football game there with my dad. In second grade our class went to Boardwalk Hall (then Convention Hall) to see the circus. Over my years here at the shore, I have gone to Boardwalk Hall to see the Philadelphia 76’ers, Jay-Z and Mary J Blige, and even The Ice Capes.

Those and many more experiences brought me so much joy.

Ironically, today I am here to ask you to visit The Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall for an unticketed experience that in truth brought tears to my eyes. I recently went to Boardwalk

Hall to take a look at the brand new Atlantic City Museum of Labor which is located inside Boardwalk Hall.

The Atlantic City Museum of Labor is a part of the Atlantic City Experience /Atlantic City Museum located within Boardwalk Hall. The museum itself celebrates over 150 years of experiences unique to Atlantic City from Miss America to Mr. Peanut. Going to the Atlantic City Museum is like taking a walk through a time capsule and for me is like reliving some of my favorite summer

days on the boardwalk.

I almost expected Bert Parks to tap me on the shoulder and ask me to hold his “invisible dog” while he sings “There She Is ...Miss America.”

When I looked at the area that is now The Atlantic City Labor Museum, I saw an exhibit that brought tears to my eyes. One of the cases that pays homage to the many laborers of Atlantic City is a hard

hat, an orange vest, work pants, and boots. When I saw that outfit hanging in a glass case, my mind went back to my family’s apartment on Maryland Avenue. It was nice being off from school but my day was never complete until my father walked through that door with his hard hat on. Once my dad arrived, home felt like home. I was always so proud of how hard my father worked as a member of the local carpenter’s union. I can still go to his room and pick up his work badge if I need to. Seeing that display reminded me of (my dad) Raymond Tyler, Sr and the fact that our family will never be the same because Dad has passed on (gone these last 10 years).

Still, I would ask you all that love and enjoy Atlantic City to make a trip to Boardwalk Hall and visit The Atlantic City Labor Museum. It honors the police and fire departments that keep us safe, beach patrol which also keeps us safe, all the many laborers and people behind the scenes at concerts and special events, and the museum honors the people who helped build the hotels. If you’ve ever enjoyed Atlantic City in any capacity,, there are hundreds of laborers (like my father) behind every experience.

W

hen people ask me what I love the most about sports, I often reference that classic “Wide World of Sports” opening on ABC back in the day.

Do you remember it? When the late, great, Jim McKay would intone “Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sports... the thrill of victory... and the agony of defeat... the human drama of athletic competition... This is "ABC's Wide World of Sports!"

This is a long of way of saying that sports and drama are ALWAYS intertwined, and perhaps no more than ever these days.

Since I last wrote, the Eagles have lost two games in a row to fall to 1-and-2 on the season, with a familiar face coming back to South Philadelphia next. The Phillies are

in Atlanta, but their playoff chances are on “life support”. The Sixers have opened training camp, but the big story is the guy who is NOT there. The Flyers officially skate in their first preseason game with lots of new faces in new places. On the local front, the ShopRite LPGA Classic is finally here. Plus, a 17-year-old from North Jersey stands poised to draw big crowds at Seaview.

From entertainment, I got to see a 71-year-old rock star who can still bring it even after 45 years of touring. Plus, another big name in rock is out with a book that I will be reading as soon as it arrives.

As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● Remember when the Eagles beat the Falcons 32-6 a few weeks ago in Atlanta? Boy, does that seem like a distant memory as the Birds have now lost two in a row and each performance has gotten WORSE! ● Let’s start with the San Francisco game, which was also the home opener as the Eagles lose by six, 17-11 to a good Niners team. Chalk that loss up to missed opportunities as the Birds led 3-zip and looked like they would go up 10-nothing after a Jalen Hurts pass to Quez Watkins ended up as a

91-yard gain to the San Francisco sixyard line. Then, somehow, with four cracks at the end zone, the Eagles did NOT score. Even worse, they never attempted a QB sneak. Instead, they ran a botched version of “Philly-Philly” that had head coach Nick Sirianni admitting that he might’ve gotten “too cute”. The Birds also lost the heart & soul of their defense in that game as Brandon Graham went down with a torn Achilles and is out for the season.

Things went from bad to worse last Monday night though as I actually predicted the Eagles would win a close game at Dallas. Boy was I wrong…!!! It’s not just that the Birds lost 41-21 to the Cowboys, it’s HOW they lost the game.

To me, the Eagles were completely embarrassed Monday night by their division rivals in a game that was the worst of all worlds for them. The 20 point loss to me, shows just how far the Eagles have to go and how long it might take for them to get back to being respectable again. After the loss, I saw a lot of social media posts about the fact that the Eagles should have three first round picks in next year’s draft. Of course, who’s to say they’ll actually select IMPACT players with those picks?

This one hurts because the Giants are off to an oh-and-3 start and are awful. The Washington Football Team has lost its starting quarterback and its defense has been shredded each

week. But I thought Dallas was clearly the better team in the Monday Night Football game, and now Sirianni and his coaching staff are at a serious crossroads.

I look at the Eagles upcoming schedule and could conceivably see them at 1-and-6 going into the Halloween game in Detroit on 10/31. Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs come to town next.

Then, the Birds have to go to play a good Carolina team coached by former Temple coach Matt Rhule. After that, it’s a Thursday Night Football game at home against Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and the defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Followed by a trip to Las Vegas and the Raiders brand new stadium. Can you see why it’s not out of the question that they could be a lowly 1-and-6 going into that Lions game on 10/31?

It doesn’t help things that the injury bug continues to spread. Left guard Isaac Seumalo has now been lost for the season with a Lisfranc injury that will require season-ending surgery.

Safety K’Vonn Wallace is heading to injured reserve with a separated shoulder. Listen, all teams have injuries, I get that. However, this feels like Déjà vu for the Birds as once again their offensive line is banged up and that NEVER bodes well for a team and their ability to win.

My last Eagles item is about the penalties. In Atlanta the Birds were penalized 14 times for 89 yards. Then against San Francisco, it was 8 penalties for 57 yards. Finally, on Monday night, the Eagles were hit for 13 penalties for 86 yards. That’s 35 penalties in three games, the most the Eagles have ever committed in that time span.

Hey, you want your team to lead the NFL in something, but not in the most PENALTIES! As I write this, the Phillies have lost a close game 2-1 in Atlanta. That loss has taken them out of the NL wildcard race, and they are essentially on “life support” regarding their chances to win the N.L. East. Zack Wheeler allowed two runs in seven innings, but that was one too many when the offense came up empty (again). In the loss to the Braves, the Phillies could only manage three hits, all of them

singles. Down the stretch, the offense has looked good against teams like the Cubs, Orioles and Pirates, but not as hot against a good team like the Braves.

So, it looks like the Phillies postseason drought will continue, and for that, you have to start playing the “blame game”, right? I mean, you can’t blame Bryce Harper as he’s had what might STILL be an MVP season. If the Phillies did make the playoffs, you’d think he’d be a lock. I think he’ll just miss out, despite some outstanding numbers this season.

I do think some of the blame falls on manager Joe Girardi, as he’s certainly made some questionable decisions with regard to lineups and how he’s run the team.

But, to me, the ultimate blame falls on the shoulders of former GM Matt Klentak and former team president Andy MacPhail. The fact that a team with a payroll north of $200 million lacks the pitching depth to avoid a bullpen game every fifth day says that the team is still paying for the mismanagement

Which brings us to the Sixers. Keeping in mind that the theme for this column is sports & drama, is there a Philly pro sports team with more drama right now than the Philadelphia 76ers? Ben Simmons has told the team he won’t report to training camp and wants to be moved. The latest drama came when Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris and Matisse Thybulle were all going to fly to L.A. to meet with Simmons in person to try and convince him to stay with the Sixers.

Except Simmons sent back word that basically said “don’t come”. On top of that, his camp has now floated a story that Simmons doesn’t think he can win with Embiid and that’s another reason why he wants out.

Plenty of drama for sure, but there’s one thing to keep in mind. It isn’t like Simmons is in the last year of his contract. He’s under contract for FOUR more years. I hope the Sixers keep fining him and make him sit. Don’t give in to his petulant behavior, and don’t move him for “pennies on the dollar”. Stay tuned.

One thing that I hope people do tune in for is the new Sixers play-by-play announcer for TV as they have hired Kate Scott to replace Marc Zumoff.

Good luck Kate, and may I be the first to say, in a good way, “GREAT SCOTT!” From hockey, the Flyers are back on the ice for preseason action, but you’d better buy a program if you want to figure out who all the skaters are. I’ve written before about the seven key offseason additions, and after one game, we’re not going to really know yet how much of an impact the new guys will have. What I did see in the first preseason game was a team that was more committed to defense and more committed to killing off penalties efficiently.

Keep an eye out for 17-year-old Megha Ganne of Holmdel as she comes back to play at Seaview for the second year in a row on a sponsor exemption.

She’s extremely popular after her performance this past summer at the U.S. Women’s Open in June at Olympic Club. Now, with fans allowed to return to Seaview, expect Ganne to draw big crowds as she first tried to cut and then perhaps hoist the trophy at the end.

and played at the Music Box inside Borgata. Then, I followed that up by going to Ocean Casino Resort to watch 71-year-old George Thorogood for the first time. I was impressed that after a 45-year career of touring, he and his band were still “Bad to the Bone”!

Speaking of rock stars, most people know Bruce Springsteen, but it’s his longtime bandmate and friend Stevie Van Zandt who has a new book out that I can’t wait to read. The book is called “Unrequited Infatuations” as it covers not only Little Stevie’s time with Bruce and the E Street Band, but also his role on The Sopranos and his origins as a bar band rocker in New Jersey. I’m expecting some GREAT stories from this book, and can’t wait until it arrives in my mailbox in a few weeks.

Once again, I have to close the entertainment portion with some sad news. Longtime “Sex in the City” actor Willie Garson passed away way too soon at the age of 57 from pancreatic cancer. I was also extremely sad to learn of the passing of comedian Norm MacDonald who privately fought a nine-year battle with cancer and died at the age of 61 on September 14th. Both men were extremely talented, and both men are gone too soon.

Honoring The Life of John Hughes: 1968-2021

J

ohn Hughes lived a full, abundant, happy life. To anyone who knew him, John was a hero.

Faced with a lifetime of chronic health issues, John never complained about the cards he was dealt. As a 4x kidney transplant recipient, John’s life was nothing short of a challenge.

Despite the perpetual hill that John had to climb throughout his life, he always had a smile on his face. A wide, full-faced smile that usually was accompanied by an infectious, full-belly laugh.

In the poem, The Dash by Linda Ellis, she speaks about the “dash” written on a tombstone between the year someone was born and the year they passed away. It’s that dash that represents someone’s life. A stanza from the piece reads:

For the dash represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth.

John Hughes lived his “dash” to the fullest. With the 52 years, he was given on earth, John loved with abandon. John was a beloved husband, son, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend. While John did not

have biological children, when he married his wife, Bonnie, he instantly became a father to her two girls. He stepped into their lives with arms wide open and a heart full of love.

Being their step-father led him to his favorite role in life when he became known as “Pop-Pop” to his four grandchildren. All the kids loved John. His nephew Frankie, along with his three grandsons and one granddaughter were the lights of his life. His younger sister, Erica, who he helped raise, will be bringing twin girls into the world in February. John was thrilled at the idea of twins, letting out his infamous belly laugh when he found out Erica was expecting multiples.

John lived fearlessly. Despite his struggles with his health, he was quick to travel and try new things at every opportunity. He knew his days were precious. Since his first kidney transplant at the age of 10, John felt as though he was living on borrowed time and therefore, would make the most of each day. He wholeheartedly laughed at every chance he got. Anyone who knew John will tell you that if John laughed, the whole room was laughing too - even if it wasn’t that funny. With tears rolling down his face, John would laugh until he had to catch his breath at the smallest things. His Facebook timeline was full of “dad jokes” and funny quotes intertwined with posts expressing how much he loved his family.

John had an impact on everyone he met. After his passing on September 3rd, many expressed how John made them feel. Individuals that had only met John once or twice shared that they felt as though they had known him for 30 years. Those that knew him up close were not surprised by those comments, as John Hughes always felt like home.

His kind, compassionate spirit was inviting and comfortable.

He was someone that made others feel safe, seen, and loved.

Working as a school bus driver in his later years, John bonded with the students he transported.

Each time John was faced with a hospitalization, which was a common occurrence, the children that rode his bus sent cards and notes expressing their love and well wishes.

One note from a student read, “‘A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together

is reality,’ - John Lennon. Thanks for being my reality.”

John’s ability to connect and his willingness to love will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.

His legacy lives on in his family, his kids and grandkids, nephews, and nieces. Those mourning John’s life are reminded to live like John did with unconditional love, a willingness to live abundantly, and an invitation to laugh until the tears roll down.

Should I exercise in the morning or evening?

’ll start by saying that the best workout is the one that you actually do! Whether you workout in the morning or the evening is your personal preference.

I know many that won’t workout at all unless it’s in the morning. Life just gets too busy as the day goes on. I would like to ask all of you these very simple questions and the answers to those will ultimately answer whether you're a morning or evening exerciser.

The first question is, when can you actually get to the gym? Do you have children to get up and get ready for school? Do you have an early start to your workday? Do your children have sports, clubs, and/or activities to attend after school and in the evening?

My next question is, when will you actually enjoy it? Some would joke and say, never so I could rephrase this

with, when is it most tolerable? Is it out of the question to rise and shine at 5am because the snooze button is way more appealing? Are you too tired in the evening to muster anymore energy? When will you be most productive? This will also change throughout your lifetime. I speak from personal experience. I was once a night owl and all my workouts were done in the evening. It is when I had the most energy and alone time because my children were asleep. Over the last ten years that has shifted for me and I would much rather get it done in the morning and not think about it all day long.

Priorities change as we get older and approach retirement. Then there’s retirement and you have all that freedom to choose how you will build your days.

You don’t have all those responsibilities that you once had and your time is your own.

Lastly, what time of day does exercise actually make you feel good? Do you need your morning coffee before that 6am spin class? Do you exercise

in a fasted state or are you someone that needs a few meals under their belt to fuel your workouts?

Everyone differs, I myself prefer to exercise in a fasted state because it’s when I feel my lightest.

The key is always balance. You must train and eat in a way that makes sense for you. This is very individual because what works for me, may not be your cup of tea. Between your job, family, errands, hobbies and sleep schedule, are you able to find the time to exercise at all?

It’s tough at times to feel motivated. I get that. Motivation is internal.

How motivated are you? Think about all the gains you’ll receive by making exercise a priority. Wedging in an hour of physical activity has to be up there on the priority list. Excuses do not get results.

The best time to exercise is whenever you can but you have to be realistic with your expectations.

If your only time during the day is before work, then morning is best! If you reserve a workout for your jam packed evenings, there’s a strong chance you won’t ever get to it. Be realistic and honest with yourself. This way, exercise won’t land on the back burner. If you want it, it will happen.

You will make it work if it’s important enough. I believe wholeheartedly that the best time of day to exercise is the time that you can stick with it for days, weeks, months and years.

Consistency is key!

by Gail Beckley and Christine O’Brian in a show titled “Patchwork.” I had the opportunity to sit down with the owner of the establishment, Judith Allison.

Judy said that Nashville North came from a need by her husband to record and edit music, which he previously did in Nashville, Tenn. The couple found that they could produce music from anywhere in the country, and so they chose Christine O'Brian Linwood out of love for the Jersey Shore. “A society is a fabric, and each piece of that fabric is a portrait. Our life is a patchwork of stories. We learn different things and become better,” said Judy. The Patchwork show featured a quilt by Judy’s grandmother, sewn together from various rags (leftover from making new dresses) and incorporated family into the stitching. “She made beauty from what was in front of her,” said Judy. Christine O’Brien, one of the featured artists, presented diverse works, including pieces made from small scraps of paper, like Judy.

She’s an art teacher of children, so she described one of her styles is self-titled “squigglism,” which is to create a large painting using very small s shapes and curved lines.

Gail Beckley, also an art teacher, submitted both photographs and paintings. Her prize piece is a large recreation of a famous painting of a woman with a cow skull above her head.

Next month, Nashville North will be hosting a Fourth Friday titled “Harmonic Overtones” by Doreen Khebzou. Meet Dr. Thelma Witherspoon

r. Thelma Witherspoon has spent her life dedicated to three things: faith, family, and community. Originally from Atlantic City, Witherspoon now resides in Hamilton Township with her daughter and four grandsons, ranging in age from 8-119.

Witherspoon’s earliest roots are grounded in community. “In 1976, my parents started a church, and seeing them work with all types of people and show up for their community taught me to do the same,” shared Witherspoon. “I learned all of that from the church.”

Witherspoon served as Atlantic City Board of Education President and Vice President.

During the time period that Witherspoon served on the Board of Education, much was accomplished.

The school district broke ground on two schools, New York Avenue and Sovereign Avenue. The Board of Education additionally enclosed the classrooms of the Uptown Complex and the Martin Luther King Jr. Complex, and completed the ex-

pansion of the Chelsea Heights addition.

“I started out as president of the Parent Action Council of the New Jersey Avenue School,” Witherspoon said. “I learned the process and after many years of volunteering and advocating on the behalf of parents, I knew if I wanted to affect change I needed to become a school board member. So I ran for office. It was a rewarding and challenging experience.”

Witherspoon worked for the City of Atlantic City for 35 years. Twenty of those years were in the Department of Revenue and Finance, where she worked in the grants and budgeting unit of the Atlantic City Police Department. This was yet another experience that Witherspoon said taught her how to serve the public.

However, Witherspoon says what has shaped her the most is her faith.

Her parents, Bishop Luke and Pastor Juanita Witherspoon, founded Westminster Evangelistic Church, now the

Westminster Christian Worship Center, more than 45 years ago. In 2020, Witherspoon was ordained as Pastor.

Witherspoon earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biblical Theology from Jameson Bible School and the International Christian University, respectively, and her Honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from the CICA International University.

You may also recognize Witherspoon from her long-standing radio show “In The Community with Dr. Thelma Witherspoon” at the local Gospel station WEHA-FM. Witherspoon also served as Vice

President of the NAACP Atlantic City Chapter and Atlantic County Committee Person-AtLarge of Hamilton Township.

She is also Commissioner of the Historic Preservation Commission in Hamilton Township and is a 2015 graduate of LEAD ACT (Lead Atlantic City Tomorrow) , a former leadership program sponsored by Stockton University.

In a recent run for Atlantic County Commissioner, Witherspoon defeated Andrew Parker by a narrow 286 votes in the November 2020 general election. However, those results were invalidated by Superior Court Judge Joseph Marczyk after learning that County Clerk Ed McGettigan mailed the incorrect ballot to 544 voters in Hamilton Township.

Atlantic County Democrats sought to seat Witherspoon on an interim basis, since another Democrat, Ashley Bennett, was the last winner of the seat. However, that movement was denied. The seat will remain vacant until voters make their choice once again in the November 2nd special election for county commissioner in Distrist 3.

How do you choose a Good Funeral Home, maybe even a Great One?

n today’s world we as a society are consistently bombarded daily via radio, television and in print by ads and commercials telling us we should buy this and purchase that. I have the best deals on the latest model of car, or my pizza is the most satisfying and reasonably priced, you should upgrade your washing machine to the latest type which has a steam press setting (never iron that shirt again!). Some of these items are luxuries and some are necessities but what about the one thing everyone is going to need at some point given a long enough time line, and I am not talking about a tax attorney.

al home of course! How do you go about choosing a funeral home when the need arises? With the exception of a couple funeral homes putting an ad in the obituary section of the newspaper, traditionally most funeral homes don’t broadly advertise and most people don’t think about the need to choose a funeral firm because it is a depressing, off putting thought. But the reality is that all of us are at some point going to need to engage with one because life is finite.

As a funeral director of over 22 years in the industry in this article I am going to be talking about the best ways to choose a good funeral home.

Why is that important? Because at the time of loss everything is magnified tenfold, so a good experience will be a great experience and a bad experience will be a horrific experience.

One thing that the general public has in its favor is that there a lot of good funeral homes out there in your local community with competent empathetic funeral directors and support staff. That being said, most

people want to experience the best in service and not just something mediocre. If you are having your car fixed do you want a good mechanic or the best one you can find, if you are ill do you want a good doctor or the best doctor you can find? The answer of course is that everyone wants the best!

So let’s start with the first step which is the biggest, don’t wait until someone is ill. Too often people don’t think about using a funeral home or investigating services until they absolutely have to. Meaning, people wait until the death occurs and then they start calling around to firms in a frantic panic. If I had a quarter for every time I received a phone call from a family saying that their loved one has just passed away and they want to know how much a funeral/ cremation/burial costs I would be a rich man. I am going to get into this in depth a little later, but the point is that so many people don’t plan ahead and wait till the last minute and then you’re pressured to make a decision quickly and more often than not, it is not the best decision.

For a great number of you, your family already has a funeral home that you have used in the past and when a death in your family occurs that is who you call. This is what I like to call choosing a funeral home by indifference as opposed to preference. This happens a lot and I think it is a huge mistake that most families make by not putting time and energy into the thought process, so I will state it again, don’t make the mistake of indifference as opposed to preference! Now I have a small advantage in regards to knowing the differences in how a funeral/memorial/graveside/cremation service can be conducted, from materials used and various ceremonies done, to the little extras like limo service, bagpipers and funeral luncheons. I’ll detail those specifics in my next column.

The Crafty Cakery: The Sweetest Place to Create

wo women came together to combine their passions in the middle of a pandemic. A love of cakes and crafts blossomed into a unique bakery. In August 2020, the Craft Cakery joined the community of businesses making up Linwood’s Central Square.

Christina Ring and Lisa Smith were two moms with kids in the same class. They agreed to grab a cup of coffee together, and talked for so long they were “forced to leave because Starbucks was closing.” Christina, an editor with a deep passion for cake-making, and Lisa, a stay-at-home mom who loved getting creative with her kids, both dreamed of a place in Atlantic County where you could bake something sweet and make something magical.

When they decided to turn their dream into a reality, Lisa and Christina got to work developing business plans, researching best practices, and securing their ideal location in the heart of Central Square. Their

opening was soft, and everyone celebrating was socially distanced. Under their masks, however, they were grinning ear to ear. “We get to work with our best friends and be creative,” said Lisa. “That’s the greatest gift.”

“We didn’t settle,” said Christina. “We knew what we wanted and where we wanted to be, and it all came together.

We are living our dream.”

Of course, their opening was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the owners were unable to host some of the events they originally had in mind. Lisa had to limit crafts to groups who had been quarantining together, and Christina had fewer events to create cakes for. Nevertheless, the Crafty Cakery grew to become a go-to spot for delicious fun. The business got

to work creating treats for mini weddings, birthday celebrations, and engagement get-togethers.

“It brings me so much joy for kids, who think they couldn’t decorate a cake, to look onto their creation and feel proud of themselves,” said Christina.

Today, when you walk into the

Crafty Cakery, you’re hit immediately with the aroma of cinnamon and cake batter. It makes you want to sink in a soft chair and cozy up with a blanket. You take notice of the long tables in the front of the store, where families and friends ice cakes or apply glitter together. The wreaths on the wall are seasonal and homemade. As you move deeper into the shop, you spot colorful cupcakes with flavors like Nutter Butter, Caramel Apple, and Vanilla Cookie. You are greeted by a woman covered in flour and with a whisk in hand, welcoming you to the store.

The nontraditional bakery has plenty of events for families and friends, such as cupcake decorating, wreath making, wooden pumpkin building, and many more. “Despite COVID, we live up to our slogan, which is to create together,” said Lisa.

“We love to learn and share what we learn with kids and adults.”

couldn’t believe all of the treasures we were uncovering. Every box we opened revealed something we hadn’t seen in decades or some cases ever. When our Mom passed away last year at the age of 92 it became the task of my sister and me to pack up the house she had lived in for over 50 years. If you’ve been there before, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, someday you are in for a “treat”. I say a treat kind of tongue in cheek. There were large parts of our project that were anything but a treat. But then there were the treasures we could come across.

My Mom was of the generation that sent cards for every occasion and I mean every occasion. Not only that, she saved just about every card going back to her wedding day and even cards from when she was in high school. Cards, notes, receipts; you name it. There were high school yearbooks and even elementary school report cards. Everything was packed away in cardboard boxes stacked in the back of her attic. There were pictures by the hundreds. Of course, this was back before the digital age. So, every picture was printed out and either in envelopes, scrapbooks, or just stacked in old shoeboxes. This was where the struggle began. There was so

much to go through, so many decisions of what to keep and what to get rid of. But as we opened each box, we literally could have spent hours reading the notes, going through the pictures, sorting, sorting, sorting. At times, it was overwhelming.

Although a lot of the things we came across were interesting, much of what we found we couldn’t identify. Letters from people we didn’t know or very old pictures from the early 1900s that had no name on the back and unfortunately no other way of identifying. I remarked to my sister on more than one occasion, I wish Mom were here to tell us more about what we are finding. I’d find a picture or a letter and wonder to myself what the backstory was or the context.

My point in telling you this story is twofold. If you have boxes stored away with treasured memories, take the time to open them up. The truth is, they do no good to anyone tucked away somewhere.

And likewise, if you have elderly parents or someone you know who has these hidden treasures and can’t get to them, offer to dig through the attic, basement, or closet and bring them out. Don’t wait until it’s too late to relive these memories and revisit the past.

A Matter of Trust

ne word has been in my mind lately, like a song that you can’t get out of your head. That word is “trust.” My “low trust” light has been glowing a lot recently and I’ve had to pause for some introspection as to how this came about because I have come to believe that overall, trust has a “freshness date” built into it. For me, it is beginning to spoil.

According to an article in Psychology Today, “The Neuroscience of Trust, “Recent neuroscientific research shows that in many ways our brains are hardwired to trust others.” In the early years, I did; parents, friends, teachers, coaches, everybody I came in contact with. I had no reason to. But the article goes on to say, “…this aspect of our human nature is one reason that having your trust betrayed can short circuit your neurobiology and make it difficult to trust again. Some circumstances involving trust can make you vulnerable and past negative experiences will resurface.”

I experienced this firsthand at a company where I was employed for many years. Trusts were betrayed for power, advancements, favors, or simply social standing. My coworkers and I would joke about the ever-shrinking “circle of trust.” Trust issues continued with family and extended family however, life experiences along with applying certain modifications ameliorated some of its effects.

I must say that even though I consider my-

self to be of relatively high moral character, I also have been guilty of betraying trusts. Some of them still nag at me but I feel that the decisions I made at the time were perhaps, selfish but made with the best information I had.

Before being critical of others, I do a self-assessment to reacquaint myself with my strengths and weaknesses. My wife is always a little too eager to help in this exercise.

I also think my struggles with trust have been exacerbated by what has been happening in our world over the past couple of years. Even in my advanced years, I cannot remember such distrust in our government, the various agencies, and corporations that we have put our trust in for so many years.

There is such conflicting information about vaccines, masks, climate change, immigration, and racism just to name a few, and somewhere in the chaos, lies the truth. I just don’t know where.

Can you trust everyone to be truthful in their answers when travel plans may be in jeopardy? You had better not. A recent study by the Pew Research Center stated that Americans are anxious about the level of confidence they have in each other. It states, “fully 71% think interpersonal confidence has worsened in the past 20 years. And about half (49%) think a major weight dragging down such trust is that Americans are not as reliable as they used to be.” Thankfully, as a retiree and being out of the mainstream workforce for some years, I am not put in a position to trust the entities one must interact with throughout performing one’s duties. But I do not live in isolation either. My best defense is to acknowledge that I will be faced with these interpersonal challenges and do my best to prepare for them.

As President Ronald Reagan so famously said, “Trust but verify.” Trust me, I will.
