The 101,000 square foot store is reported to open mid to late Octo-

ber, according to an employee who was working inside. It will include a CVS, a grocery section and a Starbucks.

Fall Vibes Letter from the editor

A

utumn is in the air. From mums to pumpkin spice lattes, the signs of the changing season are everywhere. One of my favorite things about living in this part of the country is the seasonal changes. Fall seems to have a special coziness to it. Maybe it's the crispness in the air every evening or the reintroduction of my favorite hoodies. I love the aesthetic look and smell of Autumn. The warm glow at dusk, the burnt shade of orange pumpkins and fallen leaves.

Knowing that the holidays are right around the corner also adds to my excitement.

Many of our favorite fall events are BACK this year! Read about this weekend's Seafood Festival on page 38, Margate's Fall Festival on page 22 and the return of Terror in Junkyard on page 28. The cool part about takIssue 176

ing a year off is that many of these organizations took the opportunity to plan how to make their events even more spectacular! Margate's Fall Fest has added a Scarefest After Dark and a Cornhole tournament to their already sensational event. Terror in the Junkyard has added scenes and changed up their maze. They also are adding a Trunk-or-Treat and flea market in the junkyard for younger children and families to enjoy. Sometimes a pause can lead to even greater things!

Football is another highlight of Fall. Fans are back in the stadiums and of course, watching from their home screens as well. In this issue of Shore Local, check out the Fall Bucket List on page__. Make a plan to indulge in some fun this season.

5 Fun Facts For Fall

utumn is a season of many changes, with some of the most notable including the dramatic multicolored displays that occur just prior to trees shedding their leaves. It's also a time of year when many people feel reenergized by cooler temperatures and spend many hours outdoors enjoying all that fall has to offer.

Whether one is collecting leaves, picking apples, exploring corn mazes, or driving the countryside enjoying the foliage, autumn is full of fun facts that can make the season that much more enjoyable.

Autumn begins on the autumnal equinox, which occurs on or near September 22 in the northern hemisphere. This year, September 22 is the day when the sun crosses the celestial equator moving southward.

When the equinox occurs, there are an equal number of daylight and nighttime hours.

Since ancient times, autumn has been an important time of year for many civilizations. Autumn is a main harvesting time in many areas,

and a successful harvest was once necessary for survival. Many steps are, and have long been, taken to ensure a bountiful autumn harvest.

Fall is a time when trees and other plants prepare for dormancy during winter. As autumn progresses and the hours of daylight gradually decrease, trees begin to close down their food production systems and reduce the amount of chlorophyll in leaves. Chlorophyll is the chemical that makes tree leaves green, and as it declines, other chemicals become more prominent and shine through in the leaves. That is why leaves change color.

Some scientists believe that global climate change can impact autumn colors, such as delaying the change in trees. Also, red pigments may start to decline as trees use sugary fuel to grow new twigs rather than to cause red leaf displays.

Americans more readily refer to this time of year as fall, while the British use autumn. Both terms date back to around the 16th century. Prior to this period, autumn was known as harvest.

Locals' Summer Weather

elcome to second summer, or locals' summer as it's affectionately known according to many year-round residents. After all, there's a lot to love about this time of year.

The ocean is still quite warm, in the low 70s at last check. The waves are often some of the best of the season, thanks to many offshore hurricanes that kick up the swell during the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. Last week, FYI, we had Hurricane Larry to thank.

Of course, the air is still quite warm as well. Our average high temperature to start the month on September 1st is around 83 degrees, with an average overnight low around 63 degrees. By the end of the month on September 30th, we shave 10 de-

grees off of both.

It can still get hot, and here's proof: 8 of the last 10 September have had at least one 90-degree day.

And four times since 2015, highs have soared into the mid-90s at least once during September. Let's not forget a late summer heatwave happens on occasion as well during September.

And finally, this week reminds us that it can still get quite sticky this time of year, even if the heat and humidity combination usually doesn't rise to mid-summer levels. The calendar says that fall doesn't officially arrive this year until 3:21 pm on Wednesday, September 22nd, and summer intends on using its full allotment of time this year.

That's becoming a more regular tradition over the past decade or so. You can call it what you will: global warming, climate change, natural variability, good or bad luck, depending on your weather point of view. But the fact is that 5 of the top 10 warmest Septembers

ever recorded have occurred in the last 6 years, or since 2015. 90-degree days are becoming more common in September, and hints of fall are becoming a bit less common.

Have you noticed it too? It's been a definite trend over the last decade or two, and as a lover of everything fall, I've found I had to be more patient waiting for a fall pattern to become established each year. Sure, just like Christmas decorations come out before Halloween, I saw pumpkin spice coffee and muffins out way too early this year. But while you can rush the fall flavors, it's becoming increasingly difficult to rush fall weather.

It's part of what are shifting seasons, even if those shifts are gradual for now. Summer seems to extend later into September, and occasionally into October. There have only been three days in October that have ever reached 90 degrees, and two of those three occurred in the last 15 years, one in 2007 and one in 2019 when we soared to 96 degrees! Fall is therefore delayed a bit many years of late, arriving more so in October, continuing through November, and may last into December, which is traditionally a winter month.

There's a flip side to that as well on the other end, and that has to do with March. March has trended cold-

er and snowier over the past decade or two, with 5 of the top 12 snowiest months of March on record occurring since the winter of 2007-2008. So yes, while winter starts later, it extends later into March, delaying spring as a result. And the whole cycle rinses and repeats each year.

Now every season and every year are different. And there's no plan on changing the official start times of any season, as those equinoxes and solstices are based on astronomy, not meteorology. But based on personal observation from forecasting South Jersey weather over the last two decades combined with some of the statistics cited above, our traditional expectations for when to expect certain types of weather may have to shift due to our changing climate. Of course, further shifts are always possible, and two decades is hardly enough time to determine if these trends are significant or not.

For now, though, it means you may have a better chance than usual to be enjoying the beach on Columbus Day weekend. But it also means the chance for snowy St. Patrick's Days may be a little higher than you once remember.

Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Richard Somers Day Celebrated in Somers Point

n Wednesday, September 15th, the City of Somers Point commemorated and honored the

life of the late naval officer, Richard Somers. Among the guests in attendance included members of the USS Somers Crewmembers Association, whom celebrated their 10th Anniversary earlier this week in Atlantic City. Spokesman Bob Plante spoke about the camaraderie of last week’s reunion, and the efforts to naming a new ship after the late commander. “It would keep up the legacy of the Somers. We want active duty members to know the history of Somers.”

What is Your Favorite Fall Flavor?

s soon as the calendar flips to September, fall flavors hit the menu all over. We only have a short window

to enjoy the seasonal flavors before they disappear. In the past, I would make a good bet that most people’s favorite flavor was pumpkin or pumpkin spice. Every Starbucks in town would have a line down and around the block selling frozen pumpkin spice drinks from morning until night.

It seems like a new flavor is giving pumpkin spice a run for its money!

Apple flavored coffees and drinks are now competing for fans' favorites. In the past few years, more and more people have mentioned “Apple” as being the best fall flavor. I would

brush that off as I ordered my pumpkin spice frappe and pumpkin muffin with cream cheese frosting. But I can’t deny that fresh apple cider is one of my favorite beverages of all time along with baked apples and cinnamon. Now is the time you can see in almost every coffee shop, apple, and pumpkin-flavored beverages, and snacks.

My mother’s favorite fall snack and flavors are S’mores. S’mores are the cornerstone of every great bonfire in the fall. While my mom makes a mess with her sticky treat my boyfriend thinks about every flavor of soup he gets to have throughout the season.

From homemade Chicken Noodle soup to Loaded Potato I don’t think he could ever pick a favorite.

After a quick survey of our friends and neighbors, 50% of the partici-

pants prefer the pumpkin flavor. The other 50% is comprised of apple flavors, cinnamon, and maple lovers.

INE WO R K BY BE ACH G UAR DS THIS SEASON" was the headline on the front page of the Ocean City Sentinel on September 29, 1921.

The article reported, "The record made by the Ocean Beach Patrol for the season of 1921 was 100 per cent. That the guards were busy

is shown by the report that 165 rescues were made."

The article continued, "When it is taken into consideration that 27 men guarded 8 miles of beach and handled at least 70,000 bathers without a fatalitiy, Ocean City has a right to feel proud of Capatin Jack Jernee and his men."

The article ended with a statement from Mayor Joseph G. Champion: "They made a wonderful record, and many bathers can thank the high standard of efficiency the men maintained in getting them out of tight places.

That they came though with a perfect score, considering the crowds they handled, is a record that I am proud of."

Ocean City Remembers 9/11

ast Saturday, on the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, our nation paused to reflect on the incidents that occurred in New York City, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Throughout the country, ceremonies were held as many remembered the precious lives that were lost on September 11, 2001. In Ocean City, hundreds of residents joined firefighters, first responders, city and county executives, and state representatives in a remembrance ceremony, held outside at the Fire Department on 6th and Asbury.

Among the guest speakers at Saturday’s ceremony included Billio Olaschinez, a South Jersey resident and former first responder, who presented an American flag. In the hours following the attacks, Olaschinez traveled to Ground Zero. “It was controlled chaos. Nobody knew what to do.”

Olaschinez took initiative and used a Bobcat to assist in the recovery efforts by moving debris in hopes of searching for survivors. While operating the machine, something red caught his eye. “At first, I thought it was a body.” He got out and brushed off what he had seen, an American flag. “The flag was torn. Shore Local’s 2021 Fall Reading Favorites

s we rest summer on the shelf, we turn our eyes from beach reads to more serious writing.

Summer leads to flimsy, soft stories full of drama and mystery. We love the characters or hate them with a passion, nothing more or less. As the wind picks up and the leaves change color, we can focus more on memoirs, self-help books, and other nonfiction works. And the prose remains promising, inspiring and beautiful. You won’t be disappointed. Here are my recommendations for books to read this fall: Poet Warrior: A Memoir by Joy Harjo This victorious book combines poetry and nonfiction storytelling to explain a rough upbringing inside the Creek Nation Reservation. The threetime Poet Laureate Harjo considers the forces that affected her life: her abusive stepfather, bullying from her classmates, and the writers that influenced her future. The narrative

is propelled by myths and history of the Creek Nation, threading together migration tales from Oklahoma and her ancestral trauma.

Shallow Waters by Anita Kopacz This historical yet fantastical story follows Yemaya, an Orisha deity, as a young woman who travels to America in the 19th century. She journeys through the Underground Railroad searching for a man who would eventually sacrifice his freedom for her own. She’ll face challenges and mysteries with the help of prominent historical figures on her way. Kopacz intertwines Black resiliency, feminism, and magic to create a powerful story; it’s a real page-turner.

Billy Summers by Stephen King The iconic author is back with a new story about a disgruntled ex-marine who’s asked to do one last job, and it’s a dirty one.

He’s forced to go undercover, and the avid reader challenges himself to write his own fictionalized autobiography. He partners with a

gang-rape victim (whom he rescues) to seek justice and revenge on her predators. King beautifully puts words to the ways writing fiction can heal and empower. “It was a way to write the truth,” Billy wrote.

Great Circle by Maggie Shiphead The story takes place in 1914 and follows two women: Marian Graves, an aviator who becomes lost flying over Antarctica, and Hadley Baxter, an ambitious actress casted to play Marian on the big screen. How did Marian end up going missing?

The six-hundred-page novel answers that question and forces Hadley to come out of her shell and embrace the courage of her aviator-inspiration.

The story is engrossing and powerful, celebrating women who stand up for themselves and fight to be their best selves despite great odds.

A Calling for Charlie Barns by Joshua Ferris Ferris is a special author, because

he reuses themes from previous works and expands on them in completely different plots and settings. He asks,” What is work? And why do we love it?” . The reader meets Charlie, an owner of a long-struggling money management business that he runs out of his basement. When Charlie learns that he is dying of cancer, he ponders his life and its meaning, specifically around the business he kept trying to profit from, but ultimately failing. You’ll laugh and cry in the same breath.

Let’s Get Cooking: Fall Soups to Simmer and Serve

When autumn comes around, I always think of the Seinfeld episode where the gang becomes obsessed with “the soup.” And in the spirit of September, it’s time that we get into the kitchen and craft our own heavenly creation. Soup is a very forgiving food to make, so feel free to go rogue and add extra spices, cheeses, or flavors that will make the soup pop.

When the wind blows and the leaves change color, here are some soup recipes to make your whole family smile and lick the bowl:

Autumn Butternut Squash Soup

Ingredients: ● 1 large butternut squash ● 3 tbsp of olive oil ● 1 cup of heavy cream ● ½ cup of dry white wine ● 4 tbsp of apple cider vinegar ● 3 cups of chicken stock ● 1 whole onion, diced ● 4 cloves of garlic, crushed ● 1 macintosh apple, diced ● A handful of pumpkin seeds ● A sprinkle of feta cheese ● Salt and pepper to taste Peel and cut the squash in rough, yet equally-sized pieces. Rub with 2 tbsp of olive oil and salt heavily. Place in a 425-degree oven for 45 minutes.

While the squash roasts heat the remaining oil over medium heat.

Add diced onion and garlic. Stir until onions are jelly-like and tan-brown.

Add diced apple and let cook for five minutes.

Add wine, and let reduce for five minutes. Add vinegar and chicken stock. Reduce heat to low and let

simmer (covered) for 20 minutes.

Add the cooked squash and turn off the stove. Add heavy cream and stir.

In a large blender, ladle the cooled soup inside and blend on low until the texture is thick and creamy.

Pour back in the pot and heat on low. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Ladle into bowls, and add pumpkin seeds and feta on top. Enjoy with crusty bread and a warm drink.

Chicken Chili

Ingredients: ● 4 large chicken thighs, skin removed and deboned ● 1 yellow onion, diced ● 3 cloves of garlic, crushed ● ½ cup of apple cider vinegar ● 3 tbsp of olive oil ● 2 cans of black beans, rinsed and drained ● 4 cups of chicken stock ● 1 cup of water ● ½ cup of cilantro, chopped ● ½ cup of basil, chopped ● 4 tsp of chili powder ● 3 tsp of garlic powder ● 3 tsp of onion powder ● 3 tsp of red pepper flakes ● 1 tsp of dried oregano ● Salt and pepper to taste ● Serve with avocado, tortilla chips, and sour cream Cup uncooked chicken thigh in

1-inch thick cubes. In a large saute pan, cook over medium heat with olive oil and salt, and pepper. Let cook until chicken is browned on each side (approximately 15 minutes).

In a large soup pot, saute onions and garlic over medium heat for five minutes (with olive oil). Add apple cider vinegar, let reduce for three minutes.

Add chicken stock and water, herbs, beans, and spices. Cover and reduce heat to low. Let simmer for 25 minutes.

Once the chicken is cooked and cooled, use two forks to shred the chicken into bite-size pieces. Pour into the soup pot and stir.

Serve with avocado, tortilla chips, and sour cream. Enjoy!

Ingredients: ● 2 pounds of Italian sausage ● 2 pounds of russet potatoes, peeled and boiled ● 1 yellow onion, minced ● 1 large bunch of kale ● 2 tbsp of flour ● 4 cloves of garlic, crushed ● ½ cup of dry white wine ● 3 cups of chicken stock ● 1 cup of water ● 2 cups of heavy cream

1 cup of parmesan cheese, shredded ● Salt and pepper to taste In a large pot, heat sausage with a splash of olive oil over medium heat.

Once the sausage is browned, add onion and garlic. Once onions and garlic are translucent, add flour and let heat for three minutes.

Add dry white wine. Let reduce for five minutes. Add chicken stock, water, kale, potatoes, salt, and pepper.

Let simmer on low for 30 minutes.

Once the soup is thick and creamy, add parmesan cheese and stir. Enjoy! ●

Best Brews: An Island Coffee Tasting

ou may remember a recent article from earlier this summer on Ocean City’s best brews. Well, we expanded our testing to include our neighbors a few miles north.

Cindy Fertsch and I spent the day tasting house blends and signature drinks from four locally-owned cafes, and those shops did not disappoint.

Here are our findings:

Hayday Coffee

Hayday Coffee is on the beach block of New York Avenue, within the Orange Loop section of Atlantic City. They are founded on the idea of helping others. “The Hayday Way is to always be helpful,” said Alex Mazzo, general manager. “We love to help with art projects or giving directions and even introducing people to Atlantic City.”

Their house blend is a dark roast with chocolate accents. It has a light citrus flavor and pops in your mouth.

And yet, the drink is smooth, especially with cream.

It makes for the perfect breakfast blend.

Their signature drink is the iced French Toast latte, which includes vanilla, hazelnut, and cinnamon. It’s sweet and nutty, perfect for strolling

through the city.

The cinnamon on top adds to the rich, dessert-like flavor. It’s great for hot summer days when you’re craving something light, sweet, and delicious.

No. 7133

This unique coffee shop displays beautiful baked goods on glass trays and old-fashioned lights above. Customers sat under the awning and sipped iced drinks as they talked casually. The large windows let in a ton of natural light, making the cafe feel open and welcoming.

No. 7133 serves Harry’s beans, which are roasted in Cape May. Their house blend, a Guatemala dark roast, tastes full-bodied and rich. It pairs well with the house-made coffee

cake, which adds a hint of sweetness to the strong blend.

Colin Murphy, barista and coffee specialist, served up an iced matcha oat milk latte with vanilla syrup. It tastes earthy and is complemented by the vanilla flavor. Matcha is a green tea powder, Murphy explained.

He has been serving coffee for 15 years, and he raves about No. 7311.

“We serve local roasts and fresh flavors,” he said. “Our customers love our plantbased alternatives and housemade drinks.”

Ventnor Coffee

Ventnor Coffee, a well-known local spot that specializes in cool, calm, and caffeinated. Laura Pagano, who co-owns the shop with her mom Christine, said that Ventnor Coffee is all about community. “We love our regulars,” she said. “We even taught some of them to use the espresso machine and they come in and make their drinks.”

Their house blend is called the Zombie Cure, which has double the caffeine and a subtle coconut flavor.

“We have customers who loved the blend so much, they bought a flag, and convinced us to raise and lower it depending on whether we have run out of beans or not,” Pagano said.

And the blend is worth it. The flavor is strong and sweet, with hints of nutty coconut. It’s perfect as is - no need for cream or sugar. Sip slowly and enjoy the warm goodness of Zombie Cure, a blend so good that it can bring the dead back to life.

As for their signature drink, Pagano handed us an iced banana bread latte. And it sure does taste like the pastry. It’s fruity and spicy and sweet, perfect for a beach day or just chilling on the couch. I drank every last sip.

Enlightened Cafe

Located in Ventnor, Enlightened Cafe offers wholesome treats for the community, in support of those who may need financial assistance for substance abuse recovery. One hundred percent of their profits support this mission. “The Cafe nourishes both body and mind,” according to their website. Their food and drinks are all organic, free from unnatural chemicals, and rich in “sustainable sustenance.” The cafe also hosts a variety of events, including yoga, recovery meetings, and open mic nights.

Their pour-over house blend is rich and hearty, full of earthy and full-palleted flavors. It’s coffee that tastes like coffee grown on a mountain in

full sun. It tastes great black, but with a touch of oat milk, the flavor becomes sweeter and creamier, making for the perfect start to your morning or perkup for your afternoon.

As for their signature drink, I was served a superfood turmeric latte, a drink bold in color and flavor. I felt nervous sipping the yellow-orange frothy beverage but was immediately satisfied by the bitter-spicy flavor and strong aftertaste.

The foamy oat milk on top added luxury and soft sweetness to the drink.

When you visit Enlightened Cafe, make sure to come hungry, because they have a full food menu available.

From acai bowls to tacos to beet cupcakes, there’s so much variety to choose from. I recommend the avocado toast (it’s delicious).

Better the Second Time Around – Giving New Life to Leftovers Let It Grow

hen you marry into (and give birth to) a family of picky eaters, you have to get creative when it comes to leftovers.

Yes, they are expected to “eat what’s put in front of them”, yet even I get bored of having the same meal day after day. But I’m equally opposed to wasting food. That’s when it’s time to mix it up a bit in the kitchen. Even the word leftovers sounds like something no one wanted, like getting hand-medown clothes that are tired and way past their time of fashion. But with a bit of sleight of hand and some fresh herbs, leftovers can be transformed into something completely different than the original meal.

Over 50Years of Goodness

Turning your leftovers into soup is one of the tried and true ways of cleaning out the refrigerator. After a dinner of beef kabobs, beef vegetable soup makes a perfect next day meal.

Chop the leftover meat into smaller pieces and include any vegetables that were used on the kabobs such as onions, peppers, and mushrooms. Oh look there’s also some leftover corn from Tuesday and green beans from Wednesday! Those are going to find their way into the soup as well. Add some beef broth and fresh herbs, let it simmer while you read a chapter or two of your book, and dinner is served.

If you have some day-old bread that’s a little crusty, it will be perfect to dip into the soup—for those that like to do that sort of thing. Leftover chicken will make a quick pot of chicken tortellini soup on a cold day. Think about it, most of the work has already been done. The chicken has been chopped and cooked, you just need to add some fresh new ingredients and broth. If it’s too hot for soup, turn your leftover chicken into tacos, quesadillas, or egg rolls.

Shrimp and Lobster Vegetable Stir Fry

Ingredients: ● 3 ears corn kernels cut off ● 1 small can water chestnuts ● 1 bunch asparagus, cut into 1-inch pieces ● 10 baby carrots shredded ● 1/2 head cauliflower ● 1 (8oz package ) portobello mushrooms, thinly sliced ● 1 onion, thinly sliced ● 1 red, orange, yellow bell pepper thinly sliced ● 1 bunch broccoli, cut into pieces and stems ● 2 ribs celery, cut into 1/2 inch pieces ● 2 cups snap peas, halved ● 3 tbs roasted garlic ● 1/2 of a squeezed orange ● 2 oz white wine ● 3 tbsp lite soy sauce ● 3 tbsp olive oil ● 16 oz lobster or crab chunks or use both ● 12 oz shrimp, tail removed Sauté all the vegetables in olive

oil until al dente. Start with corn as it takes the longest to soften. Add seasonings and liquids. Once the veggies are softened add the seafood. Cook 5-7 minutes on medium heat. If using raw shrimp cook until done. Serves 6.

Northfield Barbers Still Clipping Away Frank’s Barbershop marks 50 years at the same location

hen Frank Grasso opened his barbershop Harry Truman was president and the U.S. had just won the second World War. So much of South Jersey has changed over the years, but at Franks Barbershop, time moves a bit slower.

Personal service and conversation count. The humble building just off Tilton Road is a place where traditions last.

His son, Jerry was raised sweeping the hair clippings after Frank moved to its present location in Northfield in 1971. The shop hasn’t changed much in the 50 years. From the wood paneling on the walls to the three gold speckled barber chairs. The guys haven’t changed much either. Al “Inky” Engle took over the business in the late eighties. Present owner Mike Vigilante has been in the shop for nearly 40 years himself. Together with Marie Giambalvo and Charlie Molner, they probably have more experience in the one little shop than many of the national haircutting chain stores combined.

Longtime barber, Charlie Molner was 17 when he first decided on his career. “I was at the local barbershop getting a haircut and watching the barber at work. He was shooting the breeze with the customers and talking sports and stuff.” He recalled. “I’m thinking I’d like to do this for a living”.

His grandfather was a barber so it kind of runs in the family.

While the shop is still in the same place it’s been for 50 years, the neighborhood around it has changed. Customers, once walking in from the east side of Northfield, now drive in from a few towns. Marie proudly explained that some of their customers came in as toddlers getting their first cut.

“Now they are bringing in their kids, or grandkids for their first cut.”

When asked about the years of hearing about all the ups, downs, and personal dilemmas of his customers, and whether he gives advice, Charlie replied “I have good ears but I’m just a small-town barber, not a doctor.”

The 2021 Terror in the Junkyard Rises From the Dead

repare to be scared. The attraction, Terror in the Junkyard is back for another season.

The Scullville Volunteer Fire Company is excited to launch the 19th season of Terror in the Junkyard.

Although, the annual event was canceled last year due to the pandemic, the Scullville Volunteer Fire Co. used the break-in-the-action to work on both infrastructure and new haunts. With this year's return, the event will bigger and scarier than ever.

Vernon Cruse, Assistant Chief of the Scullville Fire Co., said that the hayride and additional attractions will commence on September 27th and will run every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout October (excluding October 31st). Guests can enjoy the thrills between 7 pm and 10 pm (on Fridays and Saturdays), and 7 pm to 9 pm on Sundays.

“We have made changes to the haunted maze, and added more

scenes into the hay ride,” s aid Cruse. “We are diligently working to make Terror in the Junkyard scarier than ever.”

Cruse went on to add “You shouldn’t fear the darkness or the junkyard. You should fear what lies amongst the darkness, what lurks in the shadows.”

Tickets will be available for purchase online and in person. Hayride tickets will cost $12 per person, maze passes will be priced at $8, and a

combo ticket will be available for $15 per person. First responders and military members will receive a $2 discount on any purchase.

In addition to the hayride and maze, the Scullville Fire Co. will also be offering a sensory-friendly hayride during daylight hours for individuls with special needs. “We have been offering a special hayride for our special friends since 2013,” said Cruse. “Come on out on October 23rd at 4 pm for a less

scary alternative.” Anyone interested must register online at scullvillefire. com.

For younger folks and families, Scullville Volunteer Fire Co. will be offering its First Annual Trunk or Treat and Flea Market. The events will on October 16th from 12 pm to 3 pm at the junkyard, located at 353 Zion Road in Egg Harbor Township.

Extra Points with Pete Fall Football Returns

lthough the first day of fall isn’t officially until Wednesday September 22nd, I feel like the headline above is appropriate since high school, college and now NFL football are all back.

I even enjoyed back to back Friday night high school football since I last wrote as I checked out St. Joe at Holy Spirit two weeks ago, and Egg Harbor Township at Oakcrest last Friday night. Mix that in with college football on Saturdays and now the NFL on Sundays and I am a happy man!

And hey, if football isn’t your thing, we all know that the month of September is often considered “locals summer” weather-wise, so I hope you’re getting outside and enjoying the nice weather too.

Since I last wrote, the Eagles finalized their 53-man roster. They also went to Atlanta and won the season opener with a pretty impressive effort against the Falcons. The Phillies playoff chances are fading fast, but there’s still a chance! Plus, the Phils are mourning one of their own. As the Flyers get ready to begin training camp, comes news that the team will have a new goal song this season. Plus, speaking of in-arena excitement, Sixers PA announcer Matt Cord has been chosen for a pretty cool honor.

On the local front, I mentioned a few of the high school football games I’ve attended since I last wrote. Plus, a local coach is honored by the National Eagles QB Jalen Hurts postgame after the big 32-6 win in Football Foundation.

passed recently as well. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● We have to begin with the Eagles as before I get to the season opening win in Atlanta, I feel like I should address the 53-man roster that was just shaping up as I wrote my last column. Wideouts Travis Fulgham and John Hightower were both axed in the final round of cuts, however, both were added to the team’s practice squad. Running back Jordan Howard was a surprise cut, but he too, was added to the practice squad. Other notables are linebacker JaCoby Stevens as he was a 2021 draft pick, but rejoins the team on the practice squad. Offensive guard Sua Opeta has been with the Eagles since 2019 and played in eight games with two starts last season. Safety Elijah Riley and Corner Craig James are notables as well. The bottom line, if an Eagles player is hurt, the team appears to have some depth with backups and also the practice squad.

Now to the actual games as there were a lot of question marks about how the Eagles would do in Week One at Atlanta.

Remember, neither the Eagles nor the Falcons won more than four games last year, and no one was quite sure of what to expect from Mercedes Benz Stadium.

Leading up to the game, I heard NFL analyst Brian Baldinger say on the radio on 97.3 ESPN that he felt that not only were the Eagles going to win, but they would dominate the Falcons. Well, chalk one up for “Baldy” because the Eagles won 32-6 in a game

where they weren’t perfect, but they were certainly better than Atlanta!

Yes, he started four games last year, but I thought Jalen Hurts really shined in the win at the Falcons. He played smart football, saw the field well, responded beautifully to pressure and didn’t force anything when it wasn’t there. His numbers back that up too as he was 27-for-35 (77%) for 264 yards, three TDs, no turnovers and he added 62 rushing yards on seven carries. Again, this was against Atlanta and not, say, the Rams defense, but it was a great start for #1.

Other young players stood out as well. DeVonta Smith came up with an early 18-yard touchdown catch, making him the first Eagles rookie with a TD catch on opening day since Keith Jackson’s eight-yard reception from Randall Cunningham in Tampa back in 1988. Smith finished with 6 catches for 71 yards and that one score. Only DeSean Jackson has had more yards for the Eagles in a rookie debut. Second year WR Jalen Reagor caught 6 balls for 49 yards and TD as well. And let’s not forget rookie RB Kenneth Gainwell, who carried the ball 9 times for 37 yards and a touchdown. Young talent getting it done for the Eagles.

Let’s not forget the rookie coach too as Nick Siriani seemed poised and in control in his first time calling plays in an NFL game. Remember how Eagles fans always complain about the offense being too “pass-heavy?" Well, the Birds ran the ball 31 times and threw it 32 times. Can’t get much more balanced than that!

Things will be more difficult in Week Two when the San Francisco 49ers come to town for the home opener at Lincoln Financial Field. But, overall, I have to give the Eagles major props for how they performed in Week One. Moving on to the Phillies, where as I write this, they are coming off losing 2 out of 3 at home to the Colorado Rockies over the weekend, putting them 4.5 games behind Atlanta to win the N.L. East. The Rockies – who are 30 games below .500 (21-51) on the road – won the season series against Philadelphia 5-2. Against the Rockies and the Diamondbacks – the bottom two teams in the N.L. West with a combined mark of 63 games under .500, the Phillies finished the season at 5-9.

If they miss the playoffs, THIS is a big reason why.

Now, there is still a chance for them to make the playoffs. However, the wild card is looking more and more like the path they might have to take. As I write this, the Phillies currently trail both the Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres by 2 1/2 games for the second wild-card spot. The Reds have lost 10 of their last 14 games, but have nine games left against the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates. The Padres, meanwhile, lost second baseman Jake Cronenworth (broken left ring finger) and possibly pitcher Blake Snell (groin tightness) to injury last weekend. Which means there’s still an outside chance.

One last Phillies item, and it’s about former Phillies owner Ruly Carpenter as he has passed away at age 81. Carpenter was the charismatic owner who brought the Phillies their first World Series title and then sold the franchise the following spring due to an uneasiness with the rising of player salaries. He inherited the team from his father Bob and was very close to a lot of his players. When he sold the team for $32.5 million in 1981 to a group of investors led by Bill Giles, I don’t know if he imagined the team would now be worth more than $2 billion! An interesting stat is the fact that The Phillies had baseball’s second-highest payroll (the average player earned $221,274) when they won the 1980 World Series.

This season, the Phillies have a payroll of $183 million, which is almost six times as much as Mr. Carpenter sold the team for!

I only have one Flyers update as training camp doesn’t officially begin until September 22nd for the Orange and Black. But right NOW, the team is asking for suggestions for what the new goal

song should be. In another effort to start “fresh” in 2021, the Flyers are moving on from Jetboy’s “Feel the Shake” and I have to admit, I couldn’t be happier to hear this news. I never liked that goal song one bit!

For the first time ever, the Flyers are asking their fans to help decide what song to play to celebrate goals as a nod to the contributions the fans make to the team. Until Sept. 23rd, fans can submit their song nominations at philadelphiaflyers.com/goalsong.

They are asked to include the name of the song and the artist, or files for original compositions.

Once the nomination window closes, the Flyers will review the submissions and create a list of finalists. From there, the decision will be left to the fans, who will vote on the winning song. The winner will be revealed on Oct. 15 when the Flyers open up the season against the Vancouver Canucks.

Already the submissions are flying in on the Flyers Twitter & Instagram accounts. I’ve seen a lot of folks hoping for the “Action News” theme, but since NBC Universal owns a stake in the team, I doubt that will happen. I’ve also seen a

For Cord, having his voice forever preserved within the worldwide pop-culture phenomenon is a special yet unexpected career accomplishment as he heads into his 25th season on the mic. Neat stuff.

In local sports, I enjoyed watching Holy Spirit outlast St. Joe 35-24 in the latest version of the “Holy War” at Ed Byrnes Stadium a few weeks back. Also, congrats to Holy Spirit Head Coach A.J. Russo as he was recently presented with the National Football Foundation SJ Chapter Coach of the Year award.

Russo was joined on the field by local NFF president Mike Gatley and Spartans Athletic Director Steve Normane. Congrats Coach Russo!

I also made the trek to Mays Landing last Friday night for EHT at Oakcrest as the game featured “Bullock vs. Bullock”. Oakcrest senior quarterback Aaron Bullock and EHT junior wide receiver Xavier Bullock are brothers. Aaron played at EHT last season before transferring to Oakcrest. And in the game, Aaron Bullock scored the Falcons lone touchdown, but it was Xavier Bullock who scored the go-ahead touchdown for the Silver Eagles in the 13-7 win. Oakcrest had the ball last and drove all the way down to the EHT fiveyard line, but EHT ultimately hung on for the win. After skipping the games (and poor weather) in Week Zero, I’ve really enjoyed stopping at games the last two weeks. There’s nothing better

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I can’t wait for Dexter: New Blood to premiere on SHOWTIME on November 7th. The 10-episode special event will feature Michael C. Hall once again playing the lead character of Dexter Morgan.

However, I’m not sure how Jennifer Carpenter is going to work into things as his sister Deb, since she was killed in the original series finale back in 2013. What I do know, from advance news, is that many fans were upset with how the series ended, so this reboot is a chance for a kind of “do-over”.

Both Hall and Carpenter have signed on for the special event.

Original showrunner Clyde Phillips is also back. Phillips was the creative force behind such great “bad guys” as John Lithgow’s Arthur Mitchell in season four of the original series, so I’m definitely going to give this a chance with those three big names involved. ● My last entertainment item is about the sad trio of celebrities who passed away since I last wrote. I forgot to mention Ed Asner last time, from the “Mary Tyler Moore” show, “Lou Grant” and recently, the Pixar movie “Up”.

Michael K. Williams was known to so many as Omar from “The Wire," and also Chalky White in “Boardwalk Empire." He’s gone too soon at age 543. And, TV weatherman Willard Scott passed away on September 4th at age 87. You would’ve hoped he would’ve made it to 100, like so many he used to with a happy birthday to, right?

R.I.P. to all three of those talented men.

Many Opting for a Green Burial

I

n my last two articles, I explained how a green burial works. The funeral service may be traditional, then the loved one would then be transported to a green burial cemetery for final internment. Green burial cemeteries have two classifications the first is a Hybrid green burial cemetery, which means that it does both traditional burials and green burials. The second classification is a green burial cemetery that only does green burials and is called a Natural Burial Ground. Currently in Atlantic county there are three Hybrid Green Burial Cemeteries and one Natural Burial Ground. Both types of cemeteries bury in a similar fashion in that the graves are about four to six feet in depth and a vault is not used to protect the casket or support the grave. The difference is that the Natural Burial Ground's grave is dug and filled-in by hand as opposed to a backhoe and the grave-site is not marked with a traditional monument but with a mountain stone or not at all. Some green burial cemeteries use GPS coordinates to

mark the location of the deceased.

The green burial casket is lowered into the grave directly in contact with the earth following the graveside committal rites, if any. The grave is then filled-in, covering the casket and the deceased's remains will return back to the earth. This method of disposition is extremely environmentally friendly, reducing the carbon footprint in the funeral process to a minimum and appeals to the environmentally conscious. It is also appealing to those individuals who are searching for a "simple" funeral or service that requires less preparation of the deceased if chosen and a natural place of rest. With the world becoming ever more complicated and more generations having environmental concerns, I am sure the green burials will start to be requested more to the point of being commonplace.

Perhaps one of the most interesting brewing companies that will be attending is The Seed: A Living Beer Project, which hand-selects locally foraged ingredients to create their unique flavors, with meticulous planning for each beer to create something different in each brew. I highly recommend this company for those who consider themselves Cicerones (experts in beer, for those wondering).

Several vendors will be providing a range of goods, including ones locally made and ones sourced from abroad.

The latter category includes Pacific Soul, who take yearly trips to Bali, Indonesia to curate their selection of artisan goods, including jewelry, ornaments, and beautifully designed woodwork. With September being National Hunger Action Month, all proceeds from this event will be donated to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. The Great Brews of NJ beer tent has all the qualities of a major beer festival but on a smaller scale. So really, you are getting two festivals for the price of one! This is a family-focused event, and to accommodate the younger members of the family, the “Playing in the Street” Kids Zone will feature bounce amusements, sidewalk chalk, Giant Jenga, and more!

some live music, and the Sounds of Seafood Fest is there to provide just that. Saturday will be opened by The Way Outs from 11:30 am to 1 pm, who describe themselves as “4 dudes in Hawaiian shirts playing your favorite tunes”. They will be followed by Funk Daddy from 1:30 pm to 3 pm, a Ventnor City-based group of seasoned musicians who play an eclectic mix of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and current dance/ funk music. Saturday will be headlined

by Robert’s Basement, a four-piece experimental rock band from Atlantic City. On Sunday, Duck & Cover Band will kick things off from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm, playing hits from the 60s to today. Goodman Fiske, one of the

top cover bands on the east coast, will follow from 1:15 pm to 3 pm and be playing anything from Top 40, Dance, Rock, Hip-Hip, R&B, Country, and Oldies. Requests are encouraged!

The weekend will be closed out from 4:15 to 5:45 pm by Cheezy and the Crackers, one of my personal favorite local bands who play original reggae/ fusion/alternative melodies.

Tickets are only $10 to enter, and kids under age 12 go free. Each vendor and restaurant sets its own prices.

Pasta: It’s All About the Shape

W

hat is your favorite pasta dish? Lasagna? Spaghetti with meatballs? Linguine with clam sauce? Maybe the better question is what is your favorite pasta shape? Penne? Tortellini, Ravioli?

Farfalle?

According to many sources there are there are approximately 350 different pasta shapes in Italy alone.

And to confuse it even further, the same pasta shape may have a different name depending on the region of the country.

If you take into account all the pastas shapes now in existence, that the number could easily reach close to 1,000 when you add in new ingredients such as those made with whole wheat flour and gluten-free ingredients like rice and corn.

All traditional pasta is made from simple ingredients – flour, salt, water and eggs. But every pasta shape has

unique contours, ridges, diameters and lengths – characteristics that lend themselves to specific sauce applications. Some, like tiny acini de pepe and anelli are used specifically for soups. Broad paparadelli noodles are perfect for a hearty meat sauce. And large lasagna noodles are of course designed for casseroles.

Some pasta shapes were developed and originally eaten only in certain areas of Italy. For example, bigoli (thick, noodle-like spaghetti) are from Veneto; strozzapreti (meaning, “priest strangler”) are from Emilia-Romagna; and orecchiette (or “little ears”) are from Puglia.

This year there has been a shakeup in the world of pasta. Although pasta has been around for thousands of years, and most of the shapes we’re familiar with have been around for centuries. This year, James Beard Award winner Dan Pashman, creator and host of The Sporkful food podcast, introduced the first new pasta

he 26th Annual Sunshine Foundation Golf Outing was held on Monday, September 13, 2021 at the Greate Bay Country Club. All the money raised supported the efforts of the Sunshine Foundation gifts to Special Needs children.

The Sunshine Foundation answers the dreams of children, ages three through eighteen, who have severe or profound physical/developmental/intellectual challenges or trauma from physical/sexual abuse, and whose families cannot fulfill their requests due to financial strain that the child’s illness may cause. n Saturday, September 11th, the music tradition of Jazz was celebrated in a large and living way in Atlantic City. Promoters brought

Expert Uses Art to Help People Work Through Trauma, Illness

Let’s be real - life is stressful.

Throughout our time on earth, we are forced to overcome anxieties, trauma, and more while trying to present our best selves for our friends and families. How can we cope with the impossible? Kelli Karver, of Mindfully Active, has an answer, and it’s a little unconventional. Through artistic expression, her clients grow through hardships and work through mental illness. With just a little creativity and vulnerability, her clients can face the world with a steady gaze and emotional grit.

It all started when Kelli began to work in education, specifically with children with autism. She loved working with people who uniquely perceived the world, but was frustrated at the strict academic framework these children were forced to abide by. She hoped that they would learn to “live a more enriched life. I wanted to help these kids work through emotions and practice social learning,” she said. “But instead, we had to just

learn math.”

Kelli found her passion in working with people in a nontraditional way, and decided to pursue a master’s degree in art therapy at George Washington University. Today, she runs her own business, offering people from the Atlantic County area hope in the form of art. “My mission is to have therapy and a space to bring more art resources into the community,” Kelli said.

Not only was Kelli moved by her work in schools, but when her brother developed schizophrenia, her eyes were opened to mental illness on a personal level. Kelli lost “my closest sibling, a relationship that was supposed to grow, and lost a foundation in my family system.” Kelli had to reestablish her view on family and mental illness, which inspired her to become a therapist.

Mindfully Active, Kelli’s business, offers traditional therapy and art therapy, both individually or in group settings. Kellis is especially passionate about working with people who

have faced trauma.

“Trauma is stored in the brain as images,” said Kelli. “And by creating pictures relating to that trauma, clients can overcome these hard times once and for all and move on with their lives.”

In addition to trauma, Kelli plans on running groups for women facing infertility, teens, people experiencing grief and loss, and more. She also hopes to offer one-time art groups, like wreath-making for Christmas.

She has a vision of bringing in a chef to teach clients to make a hearty

autumn salad, and having the participants paint a bowl while talking about the importance of nutrition. Kelli even wants to set up a women’s networking event for business owners nearby.

“I have always been an artist, too,” Kelli said. She makes heod pallets and uses a scraper to create bright, beautiful scenes. They aren’t necessarily abstract, but they allow the viewer to sense emotion, whether that be joy, sadness, or anger.

She also relies on inspiration from the ocean, incorporating whales, tentacles, and waves in her work.

“It’s really important that you have more in your life other than work and sleep,” Kelli said. “Find a slot of time and use it for self-care.

Find a way to relax or unwind, and then grow and evolve. You’ll slowly feel better about yourself.”

ise folks once said that three things are certain in life: death, taxes, and a dash of bitters pulling together any cocktail. ….At least, that’s how I remember it. In any case, I’m here to tell you about three cocktail ingredients that do more than their fair share of work in any recipe. Have you ever mixed up a cocktail, tasted it, and thought “this is okay, but it needs something." Odds are, one of these ingredients would do just the trick in tying it all together.

Bitters: This seems like a no-brainer to anybody with an affinity for classic cocktails, but you’d be surprised how often they get forgotten in the modern sphere. Bitters are a neutral spirit heavily concentrated with any number of aromatic botanicals. They add a layer of complexity to any cocktail but are most famously used in the Old Fashioned.

The most beautiful thing about bitters is that they come in a plethora of flavors - from lemon to blood orange, to celery. No matter the drink, there’s sure to be a flavor of bitters that will bring your cocktail to the next level.

After all, we taste with our noses first! My favorite is Woodford Barrel-aged Chocolate Bitters. I’m never caught without these on hand, either at home or behind the bar.

Citrus: In food and drink alike, acidity is a crucial flavor when looking to achieve balance and depth. Without it, your flavors aren’t likely to bounce off of each other in the way they should. Odds are, your drink

doesn’t need enough citrus for tartness to beats prominent flavor – if that were the case, you wouldn’t have forgotten it to begin with! But the best ingredients are the ones that could almost go unnoticed, shining from the shadows. Whether it’s orange, lime, grapefruit, or something more exotic, I guarantee it could probably find a useful place in your drink.

Ginger Beer: This one is probably the least expected of the bunch, but hear me out. It works in SO many unlikely places.

This is the ingredient that makes me verge on being a one-trick pony behind the bar; I wind up wanting to use it so often that I have to be careful about overdoing it. Adding smart devices to your home can help to simplify your life, but it can be confusing to know where to start. Here are some tips on how you can give your home and living space a smart upgrade.

Getting Started Before you start dabbling in smart home technology, carefully consider the following to set yourself up for success.

Choose A Virtual Assistant.

If you plan to get only a few smart Home additions, you may be able to control these devices through apps on your smartphone. However, if you are planning to add smart devices throughout your home, it may be beneficial to choose a virtual assistant to streamline all of your devices.

A smart speaker automatically comes with a virtual assistant, which can answer questions and commands when prompted by your voice or through the respective assistant app on your smartphone.

Let’s 'Move The Needle'

A

re you back in the routine yet? I know for me as a parent, things get a bit off track in the summer months. The early in the morning rush to head out the door and make the bus goes on hold as does the early bedtime and discipline of study and homework time. Things are much more relaxed. It was particularly amplified this summer for our family as we were blessed to spend an extended time away on vacation and part of the time in Florida for a conference.

So we returned home to find school and Labor Day weekend hitting us all at once. The season of sun and sand was coming to a screeching halt. But it’s not just for parents. Most of us alter our schedules in some way during the summer. Then comes September and sure as the sun sets sooner and the nights grow cooler, we find our ‘not so structured summer’ suddenly gone. There is a large part of me that would like to hold on to summer just a little longer. But then again, I do love autumn and getting back in a routine to take on the rest of the year.

So, how do we get back on track and in a more structured routine again? The simple answer is, we’re left without a choice. The calendar and obligations of the season throw

us headfirst into change. But there are still adjustments to be made, schedules to be altered and disciplines to be re-learned. The downside of returning to a routine is that it can become just that, a routine where you blindly go through the motions of each day with no end game in mind.

You and I need to avoid that temptation at all costs. So, what’s the game plan for this new season?

For me, two words come to mind: focus and intention. While I was away at my conference, one of the speakers, Dave Ramsey talked about the power of unstoppable momentum.

He said that what we focus on is what we move the needle on. Maybe that’s why during the more relaxed days of summer, we have a hard time ‘moving the needle.’ There is a lack of focus.

My challenge to you and myself is to find that laser focus on whatever you need to see accomplished this fall (could be personal or professional or both). Identify what it is and then focus. But not just focus, make sure you are intentional in your focus.

Make it a point to include in the routine specific time and effort to pursue your desires and goals. Together, let’s “move the needle” and accomplish great things in the weeks ahead.
