Our island and mainland towns have done such an extraordinary job with extending the fun and hosting lots of family-friendly events throughout the Fall.

Fall also feels like a Fresh Start. Another opportunity to live our best life and embrace each day and take on some changes that make us grow. But first, try to soak up the final days of summer and enjoy them while you can.

Summing Up The Summer Weather Weather

L

ife moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around, you might miss it.

Ferris Bueller was right.

And doesn’t it seem that summer moves even faster. After all, Labor Day weekend is upon us, and with it the "unofficial" end to the summer season. Of course, for year-round residents, "locals summer" is just beginning. And astronomically, you still have some time left as well, as the calendar says we have until Wednesday, September 22nd at 3:21pm before autumn arrives. Mother Nature has also been known to provide some heat and humidity into September on occasion, with 90-degree heat possible as late as the first week of October.

But does anyone really want more of what "this" summer has had to of-

fer? Let's remember how it started, even though most have tried to forget one of the cloudiest, coolest, and wettest Memorial Day weekends ever to kick off a summer season. The July Fourth holiday weekend wasn't much better, with an inch of rain each of the first three days of July, although we did manage to salvage a mainly but not entirely dry July 4th itself. Since the bar is so low on holiday weekends this summer, it's probably safe to say that we're saving the best for last and Labor Day weekend will be the nicest of the summer big three. But that still doesn't make up for the summer's other shortcomings.

The numbers aren't official yet, but thanks to a hot, humid, and especially wet August, we've entered the Top 10 in terms of both hottest and wettest summers on record. In this case, it's meteorological summer, which is defined as the months of June, July, and August. While some don't mind a Top 10 hottest summer, as that lends itself to great beach weather, there were plenty of minuses that came with the heat this year. That includes unusually persistent humidity that accompanied just about every hot stretch this season, as well as frequent showers and thunderstorms

that made for some dicey beach days, depending on where those daily thunderstorms popped up.

Then there's the tropics and the tornadoes. It was an unusually active summer for tornadoes in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with several tornadoes touching down in South Jersey for the second straight summer, and even more just to our north and west. The remnants of multiple tropical systems, Elsa, Fred, Henri, and Ida, all provided South Jersey with some wet, windy, or stormy weather. And we're only halfway through the Atlantic hurricane season, with the peak traditionally coming the second week of September.

That's not to say the summer was all gloom and doom. There have been around 26 days of 90-degree heat this summer, above the average number we expect in a typical summer.

So hot weather aficionados had their chance to sweat. There were some dry and comfortable stretches as well, including some mainly dry weekends with "chamber of commerce" weather for vacationers and locals to soak up alike. But the summer of 2021 did leave a lot to be desired for many, at least with respect to the weather.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that is certainly true weather-wise. For instance, I hold the summer of 2014 as the gold standard for nicest summers on record. It was consistently warm, but not hot and not all that humid. The nights were comfier than usual. And the clincher: every single weekend was dry and

pleasant, including Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. As this summer concludes, either this weekend or in the coming weeks depending on your definition, we'll at least get a nice mainly nice Labor Day weekend to provide a nice final memory of the summer that was. That should include a shot of Canadian comfies to replace those persistent summer muggies we've sweated to all summer, as well as mainly dry weather until Labor Day. It's a pattern that not only should provide some cool and comfy weather to start September, but that should also keep any tropical systems away from the East Coast for at least a little while.

Or hopefully longer. So it may not be time to break out the pumpkin spice just yet, but there are some signs of fall ahead as we turn the calendar to September. As there should be.

But no matter the weather, is there ever such thing as a truly "bad" summer in South Jersey? I doubt it. It's just that some are nicer than others.

He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Diving into the Science of Tides & Waves

Do you ever wonder what makes the ocean move?

How do tides work? What makes waves? Read on to sate your curiosity about our amazing ocean.

It all comes down to the moon.

The moon has its own gravitational pull that’s less powerful than ours, but it has a great effect on our atmosphere and environment. The gravitational pull from the moon produces something called the tidal force. As the moon rotates around the earth, water moves closer to the side where the moon is. This is called high tide.

The tide rises and falls twice per day, just as the moon passes by your location on earth and moves further away. The highest tides occur when the moon is full or new. High tides always occur either directly before or after the moon is at its closest to our

part of the earth (when it’s directly overhead).

The tides run on a 24 hour and 50-minute cycle, meaning some parts of the earth only experience the tide going in and out once per day. Twice per month, the high tide and low tide are at their closest point, almost reaching the same point. That’s called neap tide.

Tides move intensely toward the moon, even when the moon is on the other side of the earth (although the process is less exaggerated than the graph shows). The eastern side of the planet experiences high tide when the western side of the earth experiences low tide. Each side will likely experience high and low tide twice per day.

The sun causes tides too, but on a less extreme level. Sometimes the solar and lunar tides reinforce each other, leading to bigger waves and higher tides, called the spring tide.

When they work against each other, neap tides occur. During a solar and lunar eclipse, the tides range in both extremes.

Waves are the product of the moon, too. Since the moon is so

close to the earth, its gravitational pull (or tidal force) pulls water closer to itself.

Waves are waters reaching for the moon. When the moon is directly overhead, waves are bound to be larger in size. Likewise, when the moon is on the other side of the earth, waves tend to be minimal. The gravitational pull of the moon affects creatures on land as well, but the effects are very little.

Scientists can only tell by using very precise instruments.

Of course, wind affects waves as well. High winds push the water up and out, leading to higher tide and larger waves. That’s why you’ll see so many surfers racing toward the ocean during hurricanes. Storm systems create high winds, leading to stronger waves.

It’s important to be careful when the tide is at its highest and waves look huge because the power of the ocean can overtake you and become dangerous!

Both humans and animals rely on the tidal system to live and thrive, so it’s important to keep the waters clean and practice safety around the ocean and bay.

Although it's not a perfect system (landmasses create disruption that affects waves and tides), it has been working for millennia. On your next beach trip, be sure to appreciate how the earth, moon, and sun work together to create the glorious tide and waves.

Atlantic City Labor Museum Grand Opening

T

he AFL-CIO Atlantic and Cape May County Central Labor Council is sponsoring a Labor Museum in the lobby of the Boardwalk Hall.

The grand opening of the Atlantic City Labor Museum will be Friday September 3, 2021.The ribbon cutting ceremony begins at 4 PM, with a celebration to follow at Kennedy Plaza with two bands.

I will be there to celebrate for my father Raymond Tyler Sr. My father was a proud card carrying member of The Carpenters Union.

As a child attending Atlantic City schools, I could look up and see buildings my father helped erect from schools to casinos.

Every once in a while I would be walking home on the boardwalk and I would try and see if I could see my father up on a scaffold. I will never forget the hard work my father put in to make Atlantic City.

There are so many people behind the suits that worked as laborers that make Atlantic City great for tourists and natives alike. For every Mayor that steps up to the mic to announce a new project or ground breaking, there are people...union people that do sound, that set up the

chairs and stages for events, people that keep the city clean and work year after year without so much as a thank you. This museum and celebration is long overdue.

The Burnsiders, a local reggae and R & B band from Atlantic City, will be performing (sponsored by Bobby Royal Jr.) Founded by Jeff Burnside and fronted by Jay Farmer.

The Burnsiders are a force of nature.There are numerous R&B and Jazz Bands in South Jersey but The Burnsiders are the premiere reggae band and never disappoint to bring great music and vocals to any stage they grace.

Six Recipes To Take It From Farmers Market To Table

I

t’s almost September, so many local farm markets are getting smaller or even closing for the winter. It’s the perfect time to utilize this awesome community resource, and serve up the freshest food. Here are six recipes you can make that include ingredients fresh and available this time of year: 1. Homemade Marinara Sauce Making homemade pasta sauce will spice up your dinner. You can create a rich, citrusy flavor at home, in your kitchen. All it takes is a couple of hours, and lots of tomatoes.

Ingredients: ● 12 medium to large tomatoes ● 7 cloves of garlic, diced ● Handfuls of fresh basil, parsley and oregano ● A dash of salt ● A dash of pepper ● ½ cup of lemon juice ● A dash of red pepper flakes ● 1 tsp of olive oil ● ½ cup of dry white wine Chop tomatoes in large, thick

chunks and strain them to remove seeds.

In a large pot, pour olive oil inside and turn on medium heat. Once the oil warms, add diced garlic.

Once the garlic has browned, add white wine. Let reduce for five minutes.

Add tomatoes, lemon juice, red

pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Reduce heat to low, cove, and let simmer for three hours.

Once the sauce has become thick and smells savory, add herbs. Stir and turn off heat. Serve over cooked pasta or on a meatball hoagie.

2. Goat Cheese Peppers This fresh take on stuffed peppers

makes for the perfect appetizer. It’s spicy and creamy and fresh. And it only takes 30 minutes to make!

Ingredients: ● 12 ounces of goat cheese ● 10 poblano or jalapeno peppers ● Salt and pepper to taste Clean peppers thoroughly. Cut them in half vertically and remove seeds. Place on a non-stick sheet pan.

Scoop goat cheese into pepper halves. Add salt and pepper. Place in a 375 degree oven for 20 minutes.

Allow cool and serve. Enjoy!

3. Lemon Blueberry Cake This sweet treat serves up tart tastes. It’s moist and buttery and covered in buttercream frosting.

Ingredients: ● 3 cups of all-purpose flour ● 1 cup of granulated sugar ● 1 tsp of baking powder ● 1 tsp of salt ● 2 eggs ● ½ cup of canola oil ● 3 tbsp of butter, softened ● Zest of three lemons ● ½ cup of lemon juice ● ¾ cup of blueberries

For Frosting: ● 1 small container of cream cheese ● ½ cup of powdered sugar ● ½ cup of granulated sugar ● 2 tsp of vanilla extract In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt.

In a stand mixer, combine on medium speed eggs, sugar, butter, lemon juice, and oil. Slowly add dry ingredients into the wet mix.

Stir in zest and blueberries and pour in a nonstick cake pan. Bake at 400 degrees for 35 minutes.

While the cake is in the oven, in a stand mixer, combine powdered sugar, cream cheese, vanilla extract, and granulated sugar on medium speed until the frosting is thick.

Remove cake from the oven after 35 minutes. Allow to cool in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. Once cooled, frost cake and serve.

4. Farm-Fresh Buddha Bowl Looking for an easier way to sneak in some veggies? Combine a grain, some protein and veggies to create a satisfying meal everyone can love.

Ingredients: ● Protein of choice (shrimp, chicken, or chickpeas work great) ● Grain of choice (quinoa, rice, or noodles) ● Veggies of choice (roasted carrots, radish, microgreens, cucumber)

Spices of choice (paprika, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, soy sauce) In a saute pan, sear protein of choice. If you are going for beans, rinse them well, hydrate them (if needed), and cook in a saucepan over medium heat for 10 minutes.

On a sheet pan, cut and roast veggies for 30-50 minutes depending on the density of the vegetable. Add salt for extra flavor!

Use the cooktop to make grain of choice. If you are deciding on rice, quinoa or noodles, cook over medium heat in a pt full of salty water. Cook as directed on the box.

In a serving bowl, add cooked grain, veggies, and protein. Cover in spices and flavorings (such as lemon juice, hot sauce, or crispy onions). Eat and enjoy!

5. Oatmeal with Farm Favorites This breakfast classic goes great with almost anything. So scour your market and pick up some great addons to this starchy meal.

Ingredients: ● ½ cup of steel-cut oats ● ½ cup of milk of choice ●

Add-ons of your choice (nut butter, bananas, diced apple, cinnamon) In a saucepan over medium heat, add oats and milk. Stir until thick and creamy.

Pour mixture in a ser ving bowl. Add additional ingredients for flavor and enjoy this warm and comforting dish.

I

can already hear the kids screaming “No, not yet! We can’t go back to school yet!”. It’s hard to believe, but the time has come once again. When Labor Day hits, we know our time to make the most of this season is limited.

If you're like me and my family, you always vow that each summer will be different. I always start the summer season determined to pack in everything we can, make the most of the time we have, and soak up the sun while it lasts. Maybe you did, and if so, congratulations! However, if you are like many of us, life took over at some point, and well, you know the saying about the best-laid plans. Whatever your summer brought you, I do hope you were able to make the most of it.

No matter how life might have gotten in your way these past couple of months, for most of us, Summer 2021 was a huge improvement over 2020. I don’t know about you, but I was so glad to breathe in the fresh air and return to a more normal life. Labor Day is a time to recognize how the labor force in the country contributes to all of our lives. Unfortunately, because we live in a tourist-friendly area, many of you

will have to work at least part of this coming weekend. However, there is an upside to that. At least the work is available. It was refreshing to watch the economy here at the Jersey Shore recover this summer. With the protection of the COVID-19 vaccinations, restaurants returned to full capacity, hotels were booked up, and most of us saw each other face-to-face again.

We no longer take these things for granted, and I’m grateful for each little thing now.

Here’s my challenge for you this Labor Day weekend, if you have the time. Grab the reins and tackle this last official weekend of the season with all the gusto you can muster. Take time to sink your toes in the sand, take a dip in the ocean, or feel the wind in your hair as you enjoy a boat ride. Indulge in that extra slice of pizza and tub of popcorn, a round of mini-golf as you stroll the boardwalk, or whatever else is special to you.

If you can come back or stick around a few more weeks, fall here at the shore is really about the best time of year for all of us locals. Either way, enjoy the weekend, and Happy Labor Day! Charlie's: Welcoming Friends At The Shore Since '44

I

t’s a cool August Friday night, and the crowds have gathered on the Somers Point beach.

A reggae band is jamming onstage, and people of all ages are swaying to the rhythm.

Hundreds of onlookers chill out in beach chairs, enjoying the entertainment and summer weather. When the sun sets and the show ends, we head to one of the most popular spots on the Somers Point strip: Charlie’s Bar and Restaurant.

A friendly hostess invites us to our table, under an array of televisions that showcase Philadelphia sports. Our group selects their favorite brews, and most importantly, iconic Charlie’s wings. The conversation is overflowing with jokes and smiles, and as we down our refreshments, it feels like home.

Ocean City resident credited as a founder of Labor Day

resident Grover Cleveland signed a bill in 1894 designating the first Monday in September a federal holiday called Labor Day. It was to recognize the contribution that America’s workers have made to the growth

and strength of the country.

Leo Bamberger, an Ocean City summer resident, is credited with helping found this annual summer holiday.

“Bamberger Labor Day Story in 500 Newspapers Across Nation” was the front page headline in the September 25, 1958, in the Ocean City newspaper. The article began, “Ocean City earned a mention in close to 500 newspapers from coast to coast by virtue of having Leo Bamberger, of Philadelphia, as one of its summer residents."

The First Miss America Pageant

A Look Back at Ocean City

ne hundred years ago, September 8, 1921, the first Miss America pageant was won by Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C. She was named "America's Most Beautiful Bathing Girl" (a year later, her title was shortened to "Miss America").

The September 10, 1921 Ocean City Ledger reported: "Ocean City figured quite prominently in Atlantic City's great pageant this week, and Miss Hazel Harris, who won The Ledger's prettiest girl contest, got much applause, as Miss Ocean City, from the multitude of spectators as she took part in the various affairs arranged by the committee in charge of the pageant."

Shrimp Tacos are on the Menu Let It Grow

W

hen your South Jersey summer feels like one continuous heat wave, eating a heavy meal isn’t very appetizing, especially if you’re the one that will be cooking in the hot kitchen. Shrimp tacos make a delicious summer meal and won’t keep you at the stove very long—unless you are coming back for seconds.

Keeping a bag of shrimp in the freezer means you always have a quick meal at your fingertips. Wait for a sale and stock up on shelled and deveined shrimp. You may disagree, but I don’t notice much change in flavor from unshelled. And if time is money, it’s well worth a few extra dollars to have the hard part done.

You will need to remove the tails, but a little squeeze makes quick work of that. Defrost by placing the desired amount of shrimp in a bowl of cool water for about 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse well, remove the tails, and pat dry on paper towels. Of course, you

can use fresh shrimp and devein it yourself, but I’m trying to get you out of the kitchen fast.

While your shrimp are defrosting in their cool bath, prepare the other ingredients.

Shrimp cooks so quickly, you’ll want to have everything else ready to go. Chopped red cabbage and mango salsa are the perfect accompaniments to the shrimp. Toss the chopped cabbage with a splash of olive oil or sesame oil, a squeeze of lime juice, and a little salt and Add mango salsa and black bean salad to your shrimp pepper. You can make shrimp tacos as simple or complex as you wish. I’m all about making things homemade and from scratch. But using shortcuts such as store bought fresh salsas or deveined shrimp will get you out of the kitchen faster and into enjoying our last days of summer.

An Ode to Coffee Cocktails Wine Time

s I write these articles for you fine folks, it’s typically a quiet(ish) morning at home: sun peeking through the blinds, dog at my feet, and a hot cup of coffee beside my laptop as I decide what to ramble on about this week. I breathe in the steam wisping out of my favorite mug and consider the options, but by now, the decision seems clear: coffee cocktails.

Most of us have coyly poured a splash of Irish cream into our cup of Joe at one point or another, but the options extend so far beyond Bailey’s.

Here are two recipes to amp up your next brunch (or any occasion that calls for a caffeinated, cozy, boozy imbibement).

Breakfast of Champions: Coffee cocktails don’t need to be served hot; this one shows that iced coffee is the perfect base for some day-off upgrades. Not too sweet, but packed with flavor (and we won’t tell if you want to drink this one before lunchtime). ● 1 oz Van Gogh Double Espresso Vodka ● ½ oz Allen’s Butterscotch Schnapps ● ½ oz Carolan’s Irish Cream Your favorite cold brew coffee Shake vodka, schnapps, and Irish cream vigorously (it’ll come out nice and frothy if you shake it well, but if you don’t have a shaker, this one is just as yummy stirred!). Pour over fresh ice in a rocks glass. Top with 2-4 ounces of your favorite cold brew coffee, to taste. Stir gently, and enjoy!

Dark Side of the Moon: This is a chocolate-lovers cocktail almost more so than a coffee-lover’s – rich liqueur and cream combine to make this the perfect after-dinner sipper on a chilly night. Go ahead, be generous with the chocolate syrup – you deserve it. ● 1 oz. Dorda Chocolate Liqueur ● 1 oz. light cream ● 2 oz. strong coffee (or espresso if you’re fancy!) ● Chocolate syrup ● Cinnamon Drizzle the inside of a glass or mug with chocolate syrup. Combine

The Other Margate: Our Neighbors Across the Pond

ur Margate sits close to Atlantic City and is known for its beaches, beautiful homes, art scene, and of course, Lucy the Elephant. However, this quaint town was named after Margate, England, which is also a beach town. What makes this town unique from its namesake? Here’s the scoop on our neighbors across the pond.

Margate is a seaside town in the region of Kent, which is located on the southeastern tip of Great Britain.

Similarly, Margate became a popular destination in the 19th century, thanks to the invention of the steam engine. Margate in England has an amusement park (Dreamland), making them a popular destination for families. Our Margate is a popular vacation spot for people from Philadelphia, while the other Margate draws crowds from London.

South Jersey has fairly temperate weather, similar to our British friends. Margate in England receives

more rain generally than our town but is considered one of the drier areas in England.

Both cities receive a lot of sunshine, perfect for the beach.

Both have similarly-sized populations.

Margate in England has been a seaside tourist attraction for 250 years, and they have offered amusement rides since the early 20th century.

They have two classical theatres, hosting Shakespeare productions as well Samuel Beckett’s political productions. They have an Arnold Palmer miniature golf course, which was illegally converted to a skate park, but closed recently due to safety concerns. They host an annual jazz festival in June and an

automobile festival every September.

Our British namesake has been referenced in a T.S. Eliot poem (“Oh Margate sands, I can connect, Nothing with nothing”), and in a Chas & Dave song. It has a 16th century Tudor house that’s protected by the Margate historical society.

It’s been featured in the Peaky Blinders series. It’s also home to a minor league soccer (or British football) team. Most importantly, it has miles of beach for vacationers to enjoy.

So what makes our Margate special? There are great restaurants, bayside attractions (like charter fishing boats), and miles and miles of glorious beaches. The town is only a few miles away from casinos and the Ocean City boardwalk. The city hosts an annual Fall Funfest by the bay and a competitive cornhole event. There are aquaparks, spas, surf shops, a Jewish Community Center, boutiques, and fantastic restaurants.

We salute you, Margate of England, but I’m pretty sure New Jersey has the better Margate. Lucy the Elephant would agree.

ack for its twentieth year, the Margate Fall Funfest will have two days of fun, food, and festivities for people (and dogs) of all ages.

Held along the bay between Coolidge and Washington Avenues, the Fall Funfest is an annual two-day block party that brings crafters, food, live music, bounce houses, back bay nature tours, educational exhibits, and kids' activities together.

Over 65 artisans will be offering a variety of handmade crafts, including pottery, photography, paintings, décor, culinary specialties, candles, soaps, jewelry, and more. Revelers can enjoy live music from two stages throughout both days. Everything from country to rock to reggae will keep the atmosphere festive. And of course, there will be plenty of food to fit every palate.

New this year, the Colmar Home Center will be sponsoring a Cornhole Tournament on Saturday. The tour-

abor Day 2021 is upon us!

And, if you’re like me, you are a little sad to see the calendar flip to September. Compared to last year, I had a very enjoyable ten weeks away from teaching. I was able to safely travel on an airplane for a vacation, and I certainly played a lot of golf.

Which is where I’d like to begin this week’s column, as I am super excited for the 2021 ShopRite LPGA Classic – Presented by Acer to return to Seaview Golf Club in Galloway. Tournament week begins on Monday September 25th, and the actual competition takes place October 1-3 on the Bay Course at Seaview.

I was fortunate to play in the media event they held the other day, and I can tell you the course will be setup for the professional golfers. I know this because this hacker was losing golf balls left & right!

But, the BIG STORY as they used to say on Action News is that a historic announcement was made at the ShopRite LPGA Media Day as well. For the first time in U.S. golf television history, the entire broadcast team for the event will all-female. Cara Banks will handle playby-play duties with Judy Rankin and

Cara Banks interviews defending champion Mel Reid Paige Mackenzie alongside as analysts.

Karen Stupples and Kay Cockerill will be the on-course reporters, with Beth Hutter working as lead producer.

Let me say this, “it’s ABOUT TIME!” Good job NBC Sports and Golf Channel for doing this. Banks and defending champion Mel Reid were both in Galloway for media day. This is really exciting news, and in my opinion just edges out the other big storyline, which is that fans will be back at this year’s event.

Last year, with Covid-19, no fans were allowed to attend. If you’ve never been to a women’s pro golf tournament, I urge you to check this one out. It runs October 1st through the 3rd and there’s a bunch of ways to get tickets for free or at a moderate price. Head to www.shopritelpgaclassic.com for more information.

Well, since I last wrote, the Eagles have played their final preseason game and also made a trade that surprised

a lot of folks. The Phillies continue to hang in there as far as the playoff picture goes, but if they don’t make it, don’t blame #3. From basketball, there’s a new development on the Ben Simmons front as the much-maligned Sixer has reportedly drawn a line in the sand as far as his future with the team goes. Meanwhile, Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher continues his busy summer by acquiring a player and locking up another. Plus, there will be new members joining the Flyers Hall of Fame. Finally, on the local front, high school football kicks off in a BIG way in a picturesque setting.

From entertainment, there’s new news about my favorite show JEOPARDY. Plus, one of my all-time favorite shows is set to return September 22nd. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● We’ll start with the Eagles and the newest face in the QB room is

Gardner Minshew, as the 25-yearold comes over from Jacksonville in a trade. Just a few days after he was named the backup to #1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence, the Jags then send Minshew to the Eagles for a conditional sixth-rounder in the 2022 draft that becomes a fifth-rounder if Minshew plays 50% of the team’s offensive snaps in three games this season. The Eagles also released third-string quarterback Nick Mullens in a corresponding move.

Because I have to turn this in before we fully know WHO is staying and going, or what free agents get picked up, forgive me, but I’ll have a complete rundown on the Eagles roster cuts in my NEXT column.

What I do know as I write this is that the Birds made a trade in advance of the 4 p.m. deadline. The Eagles have acquired a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft from Indianapolis in exchange for G/T Matt Pryor and a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. You could argue that the Eagles should’ve tried to put him on the practice squad, but the fact that another team was willing to trade for him says he wouldn’t have made it through waivers. In this scenario, the Eagles get a little bit of value for a guy they weren’t going to keep anyway. Oh, and remember how they traded a sixth round pick to acquire Gardner Minshew from Jacksonville? Well, this gets them that sixth-round pick back in 2022.

The other big news early on “cutdown” day is that the Patriots have cut Cam Newton, signaling they are going with the rookie Mac Jones at QB. There’s some speculation that the Patriots made this move because Newton wouldn’t get

Harper’s major-league-leading OPS (1.008) has spiked 67 points in August thanks

to his 21 extra-base hits, 10 of which have been home runs. No player has more homers in the month of August than Harper. He’s batting .338 with a .480 on-base percentage and .721 slugging percentage since the All-Star break after slashing .282/.378/.520 before it. There’s no denying that Harper has turned it ON. As I write this, the Phillies are in the middle of a crucial nine-game road trip that has them in Washington, Miami and Milwaukee. I hate to use the term “make or break”, but I feel like by the time I write again, we’ll have a better answer about their playoff hopes.

One last Phillies item as even if they do make it to the postseason, that isn’t stopping president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski from making off-the-field changes in the front office. Presiding over one of baseball’s worst minor-league systems, Dombrowski reassigned assistant general managers Scott Proefrock and Bryan Minniti as well as farm director Josh Bonifay. Simply put, the Phillies aren’t developing enough major league players in their farm system and the bill came due for these baseball executives. with his super-agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports. Paul has a who’s who of clients — players the Sixers might be interested in pursuing down the road in free agency. You see why there’s no easy solution here?

As much as Simmons is now driving me crazy and making me mad, I couldn’t be more pleased with what the Flyers have done this summer. Once again, GM Chuck Fletcher makes a pair of moves to better the roster. In one, Fletcher acquires veteran forward Derrick Brassard for a one-year deal worth $825,000. Brassard is a bottom-six player who should has played under head coach Alain Vigneault before. I like this move.

In the other move, Fletcher locks up Sean Couturier with an eight-year, $62 million dollar contract extension. The 28-year-old has been the Flyers' team MVP the last three seasons, but he leaves some money on the table to help the team's cap situation down the road. “Coots” is extended at a manageable $7.75 million annually. This a move that I love. Of course, if he stays in Philadelphia for the entirety of this new deal, he'll wear a Flyers jersey at 37 years old.

My final sports item is on the LOCAL front as did you attend any of the “Battle by the Beach” high school football games at Carey Stadium in Ocean City last week? Mother Nature gave organizers fits, but it was still pretty impressive to see the West Jersey Football Coaches Association put together a slate of games that featured several marquee matchups. 11 games, 22 teams all in one place, including nationally ranked DeMatha high school out of Maryland playing Holy Spirit.

Academy, Vineland, Millville, Cedar Creek and Ocean City. Let’s hope this becomes a tradition. What’s better than starting the season with a “tournament” next to the boardwalk and a gigantic Ferris wheel? ● As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as once again, JEOPARDY is in the headlines. Now, Mike Richards is completely OUT as he won’t be associated with that show or WHEEL OF FORTURE either. Sony fired Richards as the executive producer of both shows and it’s well documented why. Michael Davies, the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” executive producer will take over production duties in the interim according to reports. ● My last entertainment item is also about TV as my favorite reality show SURVIVOR is set to return on CBS on 9/22. I was watching back on May 31, 2000 when the show debuted as a summer-replacement series. I’d be lying if I said I watched every single minute of every single season, but I can’t wait for season #41. The tribe has spoken, indeed!

1/2 cup low-fat grated Parmesan cheese ● 2 eggs ● 3 cloves garlic minced ● Tsp. Olive oil ● Salt pepper to taste Heat oven to 375. In a skillet add olive oil Over high heat cook onions for 5 minutes, until softened. Add garlic and cook one more minute or so. Transfer into a bowl and mix the beef and veal, cheese, eggs, salt, and pepper. Roll golf sized ball size meatballs, arrange on a jelly roll pan or any flat pan. Bake 20-25 minutes ●

f there is one nation that knows how to have a good time, it is the Irish. An astonishing 20% of the U.S population have Irish roots, which explains why we are so

eager to celebrate Irish festivals such as St Patrick’s Day. North Wildwood has its very own Irish community in the form of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, an organization that fosters and preserves Irish culture and heritage. Each year, they celebrate their Irish ancestry by throwing the Irish Fall Festival.

If you have ever wondered what it takes to be an Irish dancer, now is your opportunity because the AOH will be offering free Irish dance lessons at the Elks Lodge (Chestnut and Olde New Jersey Avenues) from 10 am until noon.

For running enthusiasts, a 5 km run will begin Saturday’s activities, with an entrance fee of $25 before September 11th and $30 on or after that date. ne of the “HOTTEST” releases on HULU this year has been Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s film, Summer Of Soul. The documentary examines the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which was held at Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park) in Harlem and lasted for six weeks. Despite having a large attendance and performers such as Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, The 5th Dimension, The Staple Singers, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Blinky Williams, Sly, and the Family Stone, and the Chambers Brothers, the festival was seen as obscure in pop culture, something that the documentarians investigate.

The City Of Atlantic City has sponsored an annual free summer concert series of their own at Gardner’s Basin for almost 10 years. Of course, because of Covid-19, there were no concerts in 2020. However, previous years brought artists like Cameo and The Sugar Hill Gang to Atlantic City.

This year there were only two concerts but thousands of residents made the most of them.

On Sunday, August 22nd, the headlining performance came from Gerald Austin and The Manhattan’s.

I ventured out on August 28th to catch the second and final concert.

Thousands came out, braving the heat and the rain to see local bands start the afternoon, then The Force MD’s, Alyson Williams, Full Force and finally ending with The Stylistics.

I only caught two performances and both were amazing. First was Alyson Williams who had two great R&B hits with the songs Sleep Talk and the ballad Just Call My Name.

I also learned that Ms. Williams' voice can be heard on several classic hip hop recordings including Kurtis Blow’s Basketball and several hits by The Fat Boys.

Ms. Williams set the stage for the R&B group Full Force. The members

Day Tripper: Exploring Avalon and Stone Harbor, Seven Miles of Pure Bliss Any trip to the Jersey Shore is not complete without a journey on Ocean Drive. This stretch of road will lead

passengers on an expedition along the Jersey Cape. Driving south, beyond Sea Isle City, you’ll reach Seven Mile Island which encompasses the towns of Avalon and Stone Harbor.

The Boro of Avalon was officially incorporated on April 18, 1892. Seven Mile Island was formed over 14,000 years ago as a barrier island, largely from

splits and dunes. It was once a thriving juniper forest, with some portions of the island still retaining much of the original nature. Any walk to the beach can feel like an adventure. Stone Harbor, itself, was incorporated in 1914.

Collectively, both towns are home to approximately 2,000 year round residents, with over 70,000 people calling these beachfront towns home during the summer.

Here, one will find more than endless rows of summer homes.

There are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy. My journey began on the north end of the island, where I arrived at the Townsends Inlet Bridge.

Upon crossing, you will find the infamous seawall. The area is a popular fishing spot for locals and tourists alike.

My venture continued to the Avalon boardwalk, ½ mile in length, making it a perfect spot to ride your bike, run or walk for exercise. For more activities, Dune Drive has plenty to offer. Attractions include Go Fish Mini Golf, a favorite for all ages, and the Avalon History Center, hosting various displays and exhibitions.

Nightlife and entertainment can be found at The Princeton Bar & Grill.

This popular hangout brings in many regional bands and musicians, such as G. Love and Special Sauce and E Street Shuffle.

The next town south is Stone Harbor, where the beaches, shops, food and fun continue. Searching for a plethora of shops and dining options is easy; 96th Street is Stone Harbor’s main destination. From clothes to home décor, jewelry and gifts, this area has it all. Take a walk through

Harbor Square and explore the many shops in this quaint mall.

For an early morning pickme -up, Café Noir is my personal preference.

The coffee house is located behind the Harbor Square complex at

97th Street.

You can take in a Hollywood film at Harbor Square Theatre, a popular mainstay on the island. The cinema opened on June 24, 1949 and houses four screens with lots of seating, 685 in total! The most recent and popular feature films are showcased here, with occasional comedy shows and live concerts.

If you’re hungry, stop by the Burger Bar inside the theatre lobby for a pre-or-post-movie meal.

For a taste of art, I highly recommend visiting Ocean Gallery. This small but elegant gallery showcases a rotating collection of fine works from some of the most renowned artists in the country.

The galleries are located in Avalon and Stone Harbor and are open year-round.

My favorite attraction is the Wetlands Institute.

The organization has been part of the commu-

nity since 1969, educating the public about our local wildlife and natural resources that surround the barrier islands. They have a variety of interactive exhibits, in addition to salt marsh trails and walkways to get upclose and personal with nature. Bring a camera or a good set of binoculars.

Wetlands Institute is open seven days a week.

While Avalon and Stone Harbor are largely summer destinations, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy no matter what time of year you visit. Many of the

attractions mentioned here are open year-round. The Stone Harbor Shiver polar plunge, held in March, attracts thousands of daring participants year after year, with proceeds from the event benefiting local non-profits. No matter what you’re looking for, shops and dining, nightlife and entertainment, Seven Mile Island has it all.

The Great Monarch Migration Begins: The Odyssey of the Butterfly

A

s September rolls around, kids are heading back to school and butterflies are headed to Cape May. Monarch butterflies, despite their delicate appearance, travel from New England to Mexico every autumn, making a pit stop in South Jersey around September. The New Jersey Audubon Society tracks the butterflies to ensure that they have a safe flight to their sunny destination. Hundreds of monarchs are identified and tracked as they fly across the country.

Their census begins in early September and ends around Halloween.

In the early to mid 20th century, tourists would flock to Cape May to awe at the hoards of beautiful butterflies gathering around the beach.

Today, sadly, the monarch butterfly population is in severe decline, primarily because of increased pesticide use and greater land development by humans. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection writes, “The presence of the monarch

butterfly represents environmental health and well-being in the state. As the butterfly population has diminished, the environment and earth are in danger.”

Butterflies travel up from Mexico to enjoy warm NJ weather each spring. In summer, they mate and females lay eggs in milkweed bushes (otherwise known as butterfly bushes). It is the only plant that supports the growth of young caterpillars. There are approximately 140 species of milkweed, so the monarch butterfly has lots of opportunities to lay her eggs.

Once an egg is laid on a milkweed bush, the egg will develop into a caterpillar after three to five days.

The caterpillar will feast on milkweed leaves for approximately five days, and after fifteen days of life, the caterpillar will start to develop into a fully-grown monarch butterfly, en-

tering the pupal stage. The caterpillar will be in its chrysalis for fifteen more days, then spread its wings for the first time as a butterfly.

Newly-formed butterflies then enter an age of sexual immaturity, called diapause. In this stage, the butterfly is focused on learning migration patterns and eating flower pollen. The young monarchs grow thicker abdomens to maximize fat storage to maintain energy for their long flight.

A butterfly lives for approximately eight to ten months, so once it’s time to head back to NJ in the spring, the butterfly will lay eggs then sadly pass away. The next generation is born, and ready to grow up and migrate far distances.

Monarchs have a unique migration pattern. The eastern population from New England and Southern Canada travel to Mexico and Southern Florida, while the western population in

the Rocky mountains travel to western California and Arizona. During their trip, the monarchs have “stopovers,” meaning they will pause their travel to store nectar from flowers for energy. Cape May is one of those spots.

If you see butterflies this next month, be sure to care for the creature by keeping your distance and removing any hazards, such as a frisky cat or electrical wires. If you would like to support the endangered monarch butterfly population, you can plant a milkweed bush in your backyard. They are easily found in garden stores and easy to maintain.

They require fairly-dry conditions, so make sure they are planted around rocks, clay, or shells. These bushes grow between two to four feet tall and require full sun exposure. They bloom a beautiful pink color in the summer. Do not spray this plant with fertilizer, as it may harm the butterflies and their babies. Support the monarch butterfly and plan a milkweed bush. You’ll love the views of vibrant orange and black wings fluttering by your window.

Prepping your pool to sell Real Estate Matters

swimming pool can be a delightful backyard addition.

However, before listing your home and property for sale, you will need to give it some TLC. Fixing any weathering, re-caulking and updating the landscaping are all tasks that will have homebuyers dreaming of diving into the deep end.

Don't let your pool be what's steering buyers away from your home.

Rather, make it the main attraction and a must-have home feature. Here are some easy ways to spruce up your pool before it goes on the market for sale.

Rid Any Weathering or Damage.

Take into account the type of pool that you have: vinyl, fiberglass, concrete. Even if you updated a few years ago, use your best judgement to decide if it is worth updating before you put your Home on the market.

Check For Leaks.

Have your pool pump and system checked thoroughly before buyers have a look for themselves. You don't want a potential problem with the system to have buyers concerned or second guessing themselves. Make sure everything looks neat and tidy.

Re-Do The Caulk Either from harsh winter weather or extreme heat from hot summers, be sure to replace old caulk or add to any newly damaged areas in order to bring your pool back to better condition and to help prevent future damage from occurring. Storage Having a pleasing way of storing pool supplies like a shed or storage unit that matches the tone of your outdoor space. Whether it is chemicals, toys, or the pool cover-nothing should be left lying around. Showing how organized the pool equipment is will also hold a strong appeal with potential buyers.

T

here is a saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul. As a photographer, the lens is the window to my eyes and after working my craft for all my adult life, I can say that my soul has been well fed.

But with the advent of the ubiquitous cell phone and its sophisticated camera, the term “photographer” as it historically came to be, has been a title claimed by people with little understanding of the nuances that make up a great photograph.

There is an interplay of light and shadows; of shutter speed, aperture and depth of field. But if they are satisfied with what they are producing as a result of our advanced technology, if they are recording life and memories to keep for the future, don’t get me wrong. That is a good thing.

I have just returned from a trip to a little New England harbor town known for its nautical scenery with a large selection of photos to process. Maybe I was suffering the aftereffects from a 7-hour soul-crushing I-95 drive home but I began to see the similarities between Photoshop/Lightroom adjustments to our lives. We can choose to adjust the Luminance in our photos simply by moving a slider to the left or right.

Can we adjust the Luminance in our outlook?

There is a Sharpness slider to improve our photo but sometimes too much Sharpness takes away from the image. We can also take our Sharpness to a detrimental level.

Then there is the Saturation slider which will make colors deeper but this can also be overdone just as I have, at times become too saturated by work, family, outside stimuli, etc. If only it was as easy as moving a slider a little to become less saturated.

The Clarity slider can add a little punch to the photo when used sparingly and there certainly have been times when some clarity would have served me well. If it were only that easy. The slider designated as Shadows has special significance. In a photograph where there is a lot of contrast, some details/information can be lost in the darkness. Some of the detail is important so moving the slider to the right will bring this information to the surface making the details more visible. But other times, the information is distracting thus taking away from what we want the image to say, so the slider is moved to the left masking the distraction in darkness.

In our lives, what personal details do we want to remain hidden in the shadows and which details should we move our sliders to the right to make the image of ourselves a truer, more

honest representation? Sharpness, Luminance, Focus, Saturation, Shadows, Clarity, Vibrance are just some of the adjustments used to process a photograph. They can also be used to adjust our outlook. It’s just a matter of which direction and how much we want to move our sliders.

Green burials grow more popular

I

n my last article, I explained how many are opting for a more natural, environmental friendly burial process. A green burial service starts off much like a traditional burial or a cremation service. The family contacts the funeral home and the funeral home brings the deceased back to the funeral home to place the person under the firms care. Then, based on the families wishes one of two things happens, the deceased is embalmed by a green embalming method or is placed under refrigeration. Again, some individuals don't like the idea of embalming while some people are fine with the procedure or the situation may call for it based on the time involved for family to get home for viewing and services.

Green embalming is a method that uses a special environmentally safe fluid that temporarily preserves the individual and restores a semblance of color because of vascular color distribution.

The fluid itself does not preserve as well as regular embalming fluid but it is not toxic and is actually made from natural plant oils, one of them coming

from the common vanilla plant.

Following the green embalming or being taken out of refrigeration the deceased is bathed, shaved if needed, eyes and mouth closed naturally and would then be dressed in clothing that is made from natural materials such as cotton or wool, possibly a shroud. Most green burial cemeteries have a requirement that nothing artificial is allowed to be buried with the deceased. Assuming that the family wants a viewing it is at this point the loved one would be cosmetized with cosmetics that are natural and water based as opposed to oil based. Then the deceased would be placed in a biodegradable or green casket for viewing, funeral, transport and burial. A green casket is anything made of naturally occurring materials such as wood, wicker, bamboo or seagrass. The point is for the individual to return to the earth.

A Tribute To Woman of Color

on’t walk...run to your phone or internet and make plans to witness the exhibit Talking About HERstory now at The African American Heritage Museum of Southern, New Jersey inside the beautiful Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University.

The exhibit examines the lives, sacrifices and gifts that women of color have given the world and specifically Atlantic City and South Jersey.

I t horoughly enjoyed the exhibit as a lover of history and culture. I also enjoyed the exhibit as a celebration of women that personally encouraged me and still influence me every day.

There is information on the great civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer who spoke in Atlantic City at the 1964 Democratic Convention. Here in Atlantic City the whole world, via television saw and heard Mrs. Hamer

call for The Mississippi Democratic to stop preventing Black voters from casting their ballots. Today new generations of voters, council people, mayors, governors, senators and more are encouraged to run and to fight for freedom because of the recordings of Mrs. Hamers speech still being shared today.

I smiled most when seeing photos and information about the women from Atlantic City that have encouraged me when I needed it and told me off when I needed to be set straight.

These women were Mrs. Barbara Hudgins, Mrs. Pattie Harris and Mrs. JoAnna Lasane. Seeing this HERstory brightened my spirits because when I think about these mighty ladies, I always lament that they are now gone. Seeing them and so many other great women from Atlantic City honored made me smile, remembering the light they shared when they were here.

From educators to business owners. Talking About HERStory is something everyone should share with the people they love. As a man I grow more in awe of Black women and what they mean to this world every day. I would hope that girls/women would see this breathtaking exhibit and be motivated to continue being great!

Several Women I Would Have Liked To Seen Included in Talking About HERstory I want to start by saying Museum curator Ralph Hunter is a close personal friend and this is no disrespect to Mr. Hunter nor the curators of Herstory.

This is my opinion on a few names that I feel should be installed in that museum and whom I will ever be grateful to.

Mrs. Alice E. Cash 1933-2006 Mrs. Cash was the first African American teacher hired right from college to teach at Atlantic City Highschool. She touched thousands of lives in a positive way during her time at ACHS. Personally, Mrs. Cash touched me in thousands of ways.

There are several Mrs. Cash stories I have shared over and over.

One story, I rarely discuss is when her English class became a history class. Mrs. Cash discussed how she came to ACHS as a young teacher and the hardships as a woman/African American she had to endure and overcome. My class always loved Mrs. Cash for inspiring us to be better than we thought we could be. That day we learned about the sacrifices Mrs. Cash made just to be our teacher. (I miss her everyday.)

Mrs. Soundra Usry-Hollingsworth 1947-2004 Mrs. Usry-Hollingsworth has been honored by the museum several times. I have attended 3 events in her tribute there. Still I would have loved to see her on display among her sisters in HERstory. I remember Mrs. Usry-Hollingsworth mostly from The March Of Dimes telethon growing up. I always wanted to host because Mrs. Usry-Hollingsworth looked so in control, happy and made others happy as well as a host. In my senior year of High School I got to meet Mrs. Usry-Hollingsworth very briefly as a member of The ACHS Choir (we sang on the telethon.) Years later, Pinky Kravitz would invite me to host a segment and even allowed me to book some performers and that was

the final time I saw Mrs. Usry-Hollingsworth. It was an honor to tell her how she made me want to work in the media. She was special.

Shermaine Gunter-Gary Still Out Working Us All One of the most influential people I have ever met is Shermaine Gunter-Gary.

She has been a founding member of The AC Theater Guild. Mrs. Gunter-Gary has headed the recreation department for The City Of Atlantic City. Mrs. Gunter-Gary started The Atlantic City Rites Of Passage Program and I still have not mentioned a 4th of what she’s done just for the youth of AC. I first met Mrs. Shermaine Gunter-Gary when I worked a summer playground job as a counselor. I was 22 and I have not stopped learning from her yet. On her own Mrs. Gunter-Gary is amazing...I am however always honored when she asks me to help on a project. She has always answered my call when I need help on a project. The thing that makes her most special to me is when I can or drop by her home just to get her perspective on a professional problem I may have. She no longer officially has an office within the City of Atlantic City, but Shermaine Gunter-Gary’s door has remained open from the moment I met her.

There are several other great women in South Jersey today who are making their mark and I promise to do my best to bring their stories right here to The Light. These women include Chase Jackson the newly installed Executive Director for The Ocean City Arts Center, Dr. Ananda Davis the principal of The Uptown Complex School, and Dr. La’Quetta Small the principal behind a wonderful culture change at Atlantic City Highschool. There are many more great women who are inspiring tomorrow’s leaders today and God willing you will meet them here in The Light in the pages of Shore Local.
