Lucy the Duck Brings Environmental Awareness to The Shore

B

rigantine has a new mascot who is ready to ruffle some feathers. Meet Lucy, the five-year-old green-headed mallard duck who stands up for the environment.

Lucy’s story began with its owner (and self-proclaimed duck mom), Megan Baldwin.

The 18-year-old shared that she was inspired to raise a duck by her dad, who rescued an egg during a hurricane in the 1980s.

He named the duck Streak, and she followed him everywhere he went. Unfortunately, as Streak grew up, she spread her wings and flew away.

Megan and her sister decided that they wanted to raise ducks of their own. So when Megan was thirteen years old, her family drove to a farm to pick up eight duck eggs.

Each girl had their incubator, where they had to turn to the eggs and talk to them, so the ducklings would learn to imprint on their “mother.” Only one

egg hatched, and it was Lucy. Despite his female name, Lucy is a boy "It can be difficult to tell ducklings’ genders," chuckled Megan.

The feathered male imprinted on Megan, and the two have been inseparable for the past five years.

“I like ducks a lot more than dogs,” said Megan. “Lucy is very low maintenance. He eats corn pellets, but his favorite treat is mealworms.”

In high school, Megan presented Lucy as her project for the environmental fair. She showed displays explaining how pollution affects streams and the ocean, destroying habitats for animals like Lucy.

“The Marine Mammal Stranding Center and the Atlantic City Aquarium would bring animals, so I thought ‘Why not bring my best friend?’”, said Megan.

Now, Luc y stands for environmental justice and clean communities. He makes appearances at the Brigantine Farm Market while Megan shares the importance of keeping the environment clean and healthy. She also displays dioramas of a duck’s life cycle and a waterway map. Lucy and Megan also visit volunteers during beach cleanups to remind people of the importance of their work.

Today, Lucy lives a comfortable life in his pen in Megan’s backyard.

He has a kiddie pool to swim in and

hay for a cozy sleep. Megan enjoys taking Lucy to the bay to swim and eat some delicious crabs and shrimp.

Sometimes Lucy and Megan will swim in their neighbor’s pool together and take walks along the golf course.

“We need to keep our communities clean,” said Megan. “When you take care of creatures and the environment, they will take care of you.”

One of the worst storms to ever hit South Jersey…200 years ago next month Weather

I

magine the winds of our June 2012 derecho. Now take the storm surge and flooding from Hurricane Sandy, and add at least another few feet. For some, double it.

You're imagining one of our worst case weather scenarios. But those that were here in South Jersey a few centuries ago experienced it firsthand.

As the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season approaches in early September, we are also about to come up on the 200-year anniversary of probably the worst storm to ever strike South Jersey. I say probably since there's no confirmed or official record as to just how strong the winds were or how high the water was from a hurricane that roared up the East Coast in Septem-

ber of 1821. It was long before we started regularly naming storms, but it is commonly known as the 1821 Norfolk - Long Island hurricane. And it was likely one of the worst storms for both namesake locales, and all points in between.

The storm shot up the East Coast on September 3rd, on (what would have been) Labor Day in 1821. Labor Day didn't officially become a holiday until 73 years later in 1894). Air Force Thunderbirds: American Pride in the Sky

ou may have heard a loud roar over your home last Monday evening. There was need to be alarmed.

Soaring overhead was The United States Air Force Thunderbirds. The squadron landed at the 177th Fighter Wing in Egg Harbor Township, Monday August 16th.

The Thunderbirds are considered the pride of the Air Force, demonstrating both their skill and their incredible capability of the Air Force’s premier multi-role fighter jet, the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Thunderbirds pilot, Major Zane Taylor recalls how he first saw the Thunderbirds when he was only four or five years old and was so awed that he knew at that moment, he wanted to fly.

It may be the dream of many children, but what does it take to

ultimately become the United States Air Force Thunderbirds Pilot?

"It took a good record and A LOT of motivation," replied Taylor. "It begins with job proficiency. You cannot apply until you are very experienced.

Then you compete with your peers."

Before becoming a Thunderbird, Taylor graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he majored in Systems Engineering. He served as an F-16 evaluator pilot, Holloman Air Force Base, N.M. and logged more than 1,700 flight hours, including

more than 280 combat hours over Iraq and Syria.

The Thunderbirds team consists of 8 pilots, 4 support officers, and 130 enlisted personnel. "The training season is four months long and is grueling with hundreds of flights," shared Taylor. "It takes a long time to get good at this and it is a perishable skill." The

personnel working on the frontlines during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We flew over 248 hospitals and 13 large metropolitan areas," said Taylor. "It was hugely impactful not only for our team but for the nation as a whole. It was also the most any Thunderbird team worked in collaboration with the Blue Angels since 1953."

ast week, I had the best day of my life. In short, I spent an entire day trying local coffee to bring you the best, most informed take on what Ocean City offers when it comes to coffee. Here are my findings:

Positively Fourth Street Cafe

This eclectic cafe on the north side of the island offers zen vibes and refreshing drinks. Surrounded by beautiful, local art, customers feel like they're in a mosaic garden.

Butterflies flutter under the cozy awning, perching themselves between flowers and vines. Positively Fourth Street Cafe has remained a cultural institution of Ocean City, and always serves customers with a smile.

Their house blend is a medium roast with a well-rounded flavor. It’s not harsh or bitter; it's smooth and makes for the perfect cup of coffee

to start your day. It has earthy, chocolatey undertones so smooth that you don’t even need cream or sugar. It’s truly a roast for drip coffee.

Their signature drink, the heavenly nut latte, is simply delicious. The sub-

tle taste of espresso is cut with a kick of nutty sweetness. Which makes sense, because the latte consists of espresso and milk, plus vanilla and hazelnut syrups. The iced version is great for hot summer days.

“Here at Positively Fourth Street, we try to keep everything fresh, simple and delicious,” said Sharon Szabo, owner of the cafe. “Everything is locally roasted, and we are dedicated to our community.”

Sitting on the main strip of Asbury Avenue, Jon & Patty’s have quickly grown into one of the best breakfast spots in the city. Their down-to-earth, comforting vibe makes guests feel at home and by the beach at the same time. The bistro offers a great selection of breakfast and lunch cuisine and an even more impressive coffee menu. With tens of specialty lattes available, guests can choose between fun, local flavors like “Vitamin Sea,” “The Swimsuit,” and “Beauty and the Beach.” They even have a Boardwalk Latte series, with flavors called “Johnson’s Popcorn,” “Wonder Bear,” “Salt Water Taffy,” “Pound of Fudge,” “Kohr Bros. Soft Serve,” and “Cotton Candy.”

People come for Earl, who has been with the restaurant for 10 years, since the beginning. Earl Gabriel, the head barista, explains that “the difference between us and others is choice.

We have 50 different lattes. We change our flavors every two weeks, and we just had the Olympic series, and now we are on to summer.”

When asked for the signature drink, Earl immediately brought out “The Key West” Cafe Con Leche.

Made with imported Cuban roast, the latte is muddled with sugar and steamed milk. It’s sweet and smooth, and the muddled sugar highlights

the citrusy coffee taste. It’s sweet without trying too hard. The drink is one of the most popular, and for good reason!

The house blend is warm and inviting, locally roasted in Millville. It’s a

Allison Cook, the shift supervisor, shared that what makes Ocean City Coffee Company special is that “it’s very people-oriented.” “We have regulars, and your coworkers are like your family,” she said. “I love it here.”

The house blend is called the Ocean City blend, which is “roasted on the beach” (on the boardwalk and 10th street). It’s a light roast, specifically a breakfast blend, and is a combination of Guatemalan, Costa Rican and Colombian beans. It tastes bright and rich, and because it's a light roast, it has more caffeine than medium or dark roasts. These beans are also available to purchase and brew at home!

Their signature drink, a salted caramel iced latte, tastes like a handful of Johnson’s caramel popcorn. It tastes luxurious and sweet, and the caramel complements the espresso as if it was a match made in heaven. It hits the spot on a hot summer day. The Asbury Avenue shop was bustling with business, full of people picking up coffees that celebrate the town’s namesake.

This doughnut, ice cream, and coffee shop draws in families for its hipster environment (decked out in

wood and cactuses) and sweet treats. When you enter the shop, you’ll hear giggles, slurps of iced coffee, and patrons picking out their favorite ice cream flavor. It smells like vanilla and sweet cream. Annalise Wagner, Drip N’ Scoop barista, said, “We are open from morning until night, here for whenever you need doughnuts, iced cream or coffee. Whether you need to study or spend time with your kids, Drip N’ Scoop is perfect.”

The coffee is provided by Counterculture Roasters, and their house blend is titled “Hologram.” It’s a medium roast with milk chocolate notes and a citrusy aftertaste. It pairs well with the classic cinnamon doughnut, which is soft, spicy and fresh.

This coffee shop’s most popular drink is nitro cold brew, which is made fresh at their Asbury Avenue location.

It’s punchy, bold, and smooth in taste.

Take a walk to the herb garden, and you may need to test your scruples. Were you looking forward to the dill, fennel, and parsley you were growing only to find tiny black caterpillars gnawing on them? Before you decide to kill these creatures and reclaim your crop, do some research.

They are most likely the early instar larvae stage of black swallowtail butterflies. Could you imagine harming such beautiful creatures just to save your herbs? Simply outnumber the babies and plant extras for yourself.

In later stages, the appearance of the larva of the black swallowtail greatly changes and resembles a monarch butterfly caterpillar. Make no mistake though, monarch caterpillars solely dine on milkweed plants.

Monarch butterflies enjoy the nectar of milkweed flowers and many other flowers, but their caterpillars will only be found on milkweed plants.

You’ll need a keen eye to spot the tiny pearl-like eggs on the underside of the milkweed leaves. After about four days, the tiny caterpillar will emerge and begin devouring the milkweed.

While you are watching the caterpillar chomp away, you may notice orange and black insects clustered on your milkweed. These are called, not surprisingly, milkweed bugs (someone must have taken the day off on naming day). Though they also

he original beauty contest for crustaceans returned August 18th, as Ocean City celebrated the beauty of hermit crabs with contestants vying for the coveted Cucumber Rind Cup. The pageant was followed immediately by the annual Hermit Crab Races with the speediest crustaceans competing for the King of Klutz Award.

ongratulations to our new Miss Ocean City, 19-yearold Maddyn Randazzo, who was crowned Saturday on the Ocean City Music Pier. Another week of pageantry in Ocean City includes the Miss Crustacean Beauty Pageant on Wednesday, the Little Miss Ocean City Pageant on Friday and the Junior Miss Ocean City Pageant on Saturday.

The Little Miss Ocean City Pageant starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20 at the Ocean City Music Pier. The pageant will include girls ages 8 to 11 competing in talent and other categories. Reigning Little Miss Antonella DiAntonio will crown her successor at the conclusion of the pageant.

Howard Johnson, Ocean City's Chief of Police, reported Miss Olney was the busiest member of the department during the summer of 1925.

She covered a total of 2,525 cases while on duty.

Pickleball's Growth Leads to Busy Courts, New Store in Ocean City

arly risers at the Ocean City pickleball court know that it is game on before many of us wake up. Teams begin to arrive well before the gates open at 7:30 in the morning. Players claim their spot in hopes of improving their game, or to claim victory. Most teammates end up playing a round or two before continuing on with their day.

Pickleball has been rising in popularity throughout our region for the last decade. Ocean City resident Don Hepner has been a longtime advocate of the sport, which he brought back after staying in Florida during the winter. He had discovered long-established pickleball clubs in Avalon, and was determined to bring a local club to Ocean City.

In 2011, the city had set up a temporary location for players to enjoy the game inside the Civic Center at 6th Street. Interim netting was used along with painters tape. Several years later, following Hurricane Sandy, games took shape at the tennis courts at 18th Street. In 2015, the city approved four new courts to be built on the grounds of Ocean City

Intermediate School.

In recent years, the sport has seen exponential growth. Last year, at the height of the pandemic, many residents turned to the sport as an outlet to get some much-needed exercise.

In 2020 alone, Ocean City Pickleball Club noted a membership of over 400 players. This year, that number has doubled to over 800 people.

For newcomers, pickleball is a singles and doubles game that is traditionally played on a 20 x 44 court, similar in size to a badminton court and smaller than a regulation tennis court. The ball is served on a diagonal over a 36” regulation net. Players must let the ball bounce at least once prior to volleying and cannot come within 7’ of the net. The first side to score eleven points and lead by two points wins.

With the increased popularity in the sport, shop owners are also seeing the high demand. Landing Creek Pickleball, located inside Pessano’s Variety Store in Ocean City, has been open since last year. The store offers the most extensive line of equipment, from paddles to balls, grips, covers, even the latest apparel. Owner Andrew Pessano opened the store last year as an online retailer, but quickly saw a need to open in-person. “This was filling a need where people could come and see the inventory.”

to try out the paddles and see which paddle is best suited for them. Those who have interest in learning the sport can sign up for private lessons.

Lessons are offered one-on-one by a certified PPR instructor (Professional Pickleball Registry).

According to Pess ano, t he name Landing Creek comes from Mays Landing Creek.

“I have a court in my front yard; I would play with my buddies and say “We’re meeting at the creek.”

On a professional level, the sport of pickleball has gained momentum in recent years. The Pro Pickleball Association and Association of Pickleball Professionals host national tours and championships throughout the country, where the most seasoned of players compete

for top honors. As for international recognition, Don King has a bold claim. “It may end up in the Olympics.” While it is likely the sport won’t be added to the Olympic roster just yet, there is a major push to grow pickleball internationally.

The Ocean City Pickleball courts are open daily from 7:30am until Sunset. Interested players can pay $60 for a seasonal pass or $40 for up to ten games. Weekly and daily passes are also available for a small fee.

The pickleball season runs until October 30th.

The Art of Sydnei SmithJordan

T

his month make plans to see a moving new solo exhibit in oil, sweat and perhaps tears from Sydnei SmithJordan. SmithJordan brings her eye and brush to a theme that at first glance may seem to be “slavery.”

However, once you truly examine and explore SmithJordan’s collective group of paintings you will see the theme is “Liberty.”

This solo exhibition comes from the brush of Sydnei SmithJordan who has been painting for approximately 30 years. The paintings on display at The Ocean City Arts Center represent 8 months of expression on the theme of what freedom cost people like Harriet Tubman.

In fact the title of the exhibit “Death or Liberty” comes from a quote from the great American freedom fighter, Harriet Tubman.

“There are two things I’ve got a right to, and are DEATH and LIBERTY. One or the other I mean to have.”

Seen as a whole group of paintings collected in The Ocean City Arts Center gallery, the message and the urgency of “freedom ...of “LIBERTY” bleeds through every stroke of Sydnei SmithJordan’s revealing brush.

SmithJordan brings to the canvas the story of moving from enslaved to liberated. Her brush captures the people involved in the liberation of people of color in a way that is beau-

tifully if not hauntingly life-like.

Separately SmithJordan displays one masterpiece after another on the walls of The Ocean City Art Center.

Seen altogether, the artist takes us through an oil painting journey from 1690 when slavery began, through her recreation of auction posters, to the dailey toil and torment of American slavery, to the freedom runs led

by Harriet Tubman, to today and the film “Harriet” with actress Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman.

SmithJordan’s exhibit has a graphic novel feel as each painting frames an important moment in American history. SmithJordan’s “Death or Liberty” successfully unites a 3 way marriage between a mastery of oil painting, a dynamic eye for storytelling and the ability to present a bitter

history. I do not see “Death or Liberty” as another re-telling of slavery...I see this exhibit as an artist revealing in fresh new details why “Freedom ain’t free.” It is well worth the time to take your family, your church, your camp or social group to The Ocean City Arts Center and view and discuss the messages conveyed through Sydnei SmithJordan’s exhibition…”Death or Liberty.”

A Look Back When Atlantic City Transformed into "Camp Boardwalk"

ighty years ago, Atlantic City looked much different from today.

Resorts Casino was once Thomas England General Hospital, one of the main hospitals serving disabled veterans during World War II. The beach was overflowing with military trainees instead of vacationers. Hotels were trans-

formed into barracks, charging only $1 per night. The Easter Parade (the largest in the country) was traded in for military exercises. Diving horses stopped diving, salt water taffy was no longer being stretched, and Miss America was touring the Thomas England General Hospital rather than Boardwalk Hall.

The beachfront resort switched overnight into a military base, known colloquially as Camp Boardwalk.

The fun-town brand of Atlantic City allowed soldiers to smile for a moment before they were deployed, even if all of the fun was put on pause.

A nightly curfew was set, so all lights would be turned off to protect the town from German submarines.

Six aircraft rescue boats were docked at Gardner’s Basin, preparing for the likelihood of a German attack.

Unfortunately, tens of ships were blown to pieces by German submarines right off the Jersey coast, so the likelihood of a missile attack was high.

The Miss America pageant continued on, boosting the morale of soldiers and representing the American Spirit well. The crowned queen would make rounds in the hospital and on the boardwalk, cheering on the soldiers.

The Associated Press interviewed George Jollie, a fellow from Collingswood who trained at Camp Boardwalk as an army man. “I always said it was the best time in service,” he said. “The entrance price was a little high, though.”

Jollie was sent to Thomas England General Hospital after he lost a leg during combat in Italy. He then stayed at the Chalfonte-Haddon Hotel, which served as a sick ward for veterans.

Overlooking the boardwalk, Jollie recalled overlooking military calis-

thenics and docking exercises held on the beach. “It was a dandy place to recuperate,” Jollie said. “The whole city turned itself over to you. You could get a Sunday dinner every night of the week.”

At the Atlantic City Training Center, recruits would practice marches and strategic advances. The military-history blog “Lost Greetings” writes, “The Wikipedia page for this installation states that its official military records were destroyed within two decades of the close of the war because the location was not associated with any particular fighting unit.

The local newspapers have retained some photos of the wartime activities, but the training center reverted back to civilian use immediately following the war. Virtually no trace of its existence is still evident in Atlantic City, except that the convention hall, once used for military drills, remains as an official historic landmark now known as Boardwalk Hall.”

After the war ended in 1945, Atlantic City tried to transform back to its leisurely self, but struggled to find the success it once had in the 1920s and 1930s. All that remains from Camp Boardwalk is a plaque at Resorts Casino, commemorating Thomas England General Hospital and the soldiers it served.

Margate's Past, Present & Future Bayside boardwalk almost complete

s the saying goes, everything in life is temporary, and like many New Jersey coastal towns, Margate has seen plenty of changes over the years. From the bayberry bushes that covered the island in the 1940s to the first John Mahoney home built in the 1950s, the evolution has been a steady one, bringing about beach cottages, yearly homes, and beach front condos. There have been pet boutiques, clothing boutiques, bars, and restaurants galore. The town has seen a boardwalk come and mother nature take that same boardwalk away.

Amherst Avenue, between Coolidge and Washington Avenues, has certainly seen its fair share of change as well. Many will remember

the days when the strip was referred to as the Barbary Coast, filled with local haunts Gable's, which served up bands and beer in the back and Kelly's Pub in the front. At some point, Gable's turned into dance club Polo Bay. While the location is the same, everything else about the corner of Amherst and Washington is different, with Tomatoe's now serving some of the best sushi on the island and offering an upscale bar scene and dancing.

ers a safe place to stroll as they sip their morning coffee, check out the boats docked in the marinas, or settle in on a bench at the bay for South Jersey's magnificent sunsets.

Margate Commissioner of Public Safety John Amodeo said that after numerous delivery delays, the city is expecting the final shipment of lumber from Brazil within the coming weeks. Once it arrives, workers can

complete the promenade, hopefully by mid-September, when the city hopes to have a ribbon cutting ceremony. It is currently about 90% complete, said Amodeo.

"We are really excited for the promenade," said Margate Business Association Executive Director Anna Maria Blescia-Courter.

"Fall funfest will really highlight that area and all its natural beauty."

The promenade, which will be complete with railings, access ramps, and lighting, has been part of a much larger project, one that involves the completion of a new bulkhead. According to Amodeo, the bulkhead failures beginning in 2010 along Amherst

Avenue between Coolidge and Washington Avenues caused the street to collapse. The city came together with local business owners along the bay to build the new bulkhead, which was phase one of the project.

AC Cruises Brings Sights and Special Moments to Atlantic City Area

ood morning folks, this is your captain speaking. Today we are headed out to find some dolphins.”

Families smiled as they heard the message over the intercom. A little boy stood against the railing, pointing at the waves. The Dolphin Cruise was leaving the dock at Gardner’s Basin and headed for an unforgettable voyage around Absecon Island. Sunlight glimmered on the peaks of the waves, making the water sparkle. The boat rocked back and forth gently as Captain Jeff George narrated the journey.

“Today, we are looking for dolphins. We have seen them around Margate for the past few days, so we will head toward Lucy the Elephant to

catch a sight of some fins.”

The audience applauded with excitement. Then, sure enough, in about an hour, they would take pictures of a large pod of dolphins.

Some even saw baby dolphins, connected to their mother by an umbilical cord.

This is the 23rd season of chartering cruises for Atlantic City Cruises. They offer a morning skyline cruise, an afternoon dolphin watching cruise, a 4 pm sightseeing tour, and happy hour in the evenings.

“I love being on the water,” said Captain Jeff George, owner and president of AC Cruises. “I’ve loved it since I was a kid. It’s my high.”

“It was the best time of my life,” said Kelly, a passenger on the Dolphin Cruise. “My kids love being on the water, and my husband and I enjoyed delicious drinks. We would definitely come back for more.”

Life as the captain of a bay cruise is pretty awesome, according to

Jeff. He loves “giving a great first impression” to guests, and making sure they have a great time on the waters. On the dolphin cruise, he almost always finds dolphins, but on the rare days when the dolphins are hard to find, AC Cruises offers free tickets to ensure that guests see dolphins at some point in the summer.

The cruise has caught sight of more than just dolphins. In the springtime, when the waters are cooler, Captain Jeff shared that he finds seals, whales, sea turtles, and sharks. Sunfish are also close by, of-

ten found by the surface, bathing in the warm sun.

“We do a lot of private party events, like bachelorette parties or corporate events,” said Jeff.

“Our boat seats around one hundred people, so later this season, AC Cruises is excited to announce a tiki boat addition to our fleet.”

The tiki boat will seat about 24 people. Guests are invited to provide their own food and drinks, with the company also recommending the best places to pick up your supplies for this unique experience. This is not your average party boat. The vessel is a US Coast Guard licensed vessel with a licensed boat captain that will transport guests on a two-hour tour between Atlantic City and Brigantine. If you want to party for longer than two hours, they will also have the option of renting the vessel for longer.

“I love Atlantic City,” said Captain Jeff. “I love its energy and its people.

We get a lot of visitors, but the city’s soul is found in the locals. I am proud of AC Cruises because we are a great addition to the city.”

"Mom Brain" is Real Moms Vibe:

e’ve all experienced it in one way or another. My younger sister used to refer to it as “placenta brain” when we were pregnant with our first children until we realized “mom brain” was a permanent thing. I often tell people that I traded my brain in exchange for children. Now my oldest loves to refer to me as “Dory” from Finding Nemo.

However you cut it, “mom brain” is a real thing and one thing is for sure: it does not end after pregnancy. With so many things to think about, worry about, and figure out daily, it is easy to find ourselves scatterbrained and forgetful.

Some experts have conducted studies showing that “mom brain” is actually beneficial, resulting in a mother’s ability to multitask and think creatively. Afterall, that is how we survive - through creative multitasking. For most of us however, it can feel exhausting when we miss an appointment or feel like we can not get it all done. Try these --- ideas to cope with “Mom Brain.”

Give Yourself A Break It can be frustrating when you feel like you are existing in a permanent fog. Wherever you find yourself in the motherhood journey, take a deep breath and remember that you are not alone in the struggle. Give yourself a break and remind yourself of all the things you do on a daily basis. As mothers, we have a perpetually full plate that needs tending to. It’s okay if you feel like you can not do it all. While we might be the rockstars of our homes, we are still only human. Do your best and forget the rest.

5 Minutes or Less Rule Let’s be honest, “mental notes” no longer typically work for us. We might think we will remember that one thing we have to put in our calendar later but how often do we forget until it’s too late? The “5 Minutes or Less Rule” is a helpful way to get things done effectively.

If the task takes less than five minutes, just do it. Make the document, write the email, switch the laundry, put the event in your calendar, whatever it is, just do it right away. It will take a minute or two out of your present moment and add an abundance of peace to your mind.

That’s one less thing you have to think about now.

Take Time to Recharge You are not the Energizer Bunny. You were not created to keep going and going. I read an Instagram caption recently by @eatingheryoung that said, “The mother is the priority.

She is the important one. She is the one with wisdom and insight. Neglect the mother, neglect the world.”

We must remember that we are the source, the hub, the core. If we are fizzling and frustrated, chances are everyone else is too.

It’s imperative that we take time to recharge our energy and refocus our minds. Our children take up serious real estate in our brains.

Taking time to focus on what we love to do, what makes us an individual in this world, is a healthy way to clear mental space so we can continue to be the moms that we want to be.

Digital To-Do Lists Anybody else known for handwriting a huge to-do list only to leave it on the kitchen table? Thank goodness for technology in our pockets that can help us stay on our A-game when it comes to the never ending list of things needing our attention. Keep a running list in your phone notes or find a to-do list app that

best serves your life. Know that it’s there as a resource for you, rather than a thorn in your side. It’s a tool in your “motherhood toolbox.”

Take Care of Your Physical and Mental Health Forget the idea of exercising to get your “pre-baby body” back. You’re a mother now.

You can have whatever body you’d like. However, taking care of our physical health is a great way to improve our mental health. Regular exercise, water intake, and whole foods all aid in healthy brain function.

Mental health matters. You are worth the time, energy, and resources to seek proper mental health support, whatever that may

look like for you. Whether it is a mental health specialist, a spiritual advisor, or some time with your girlfriends, you need the time and space to allow your mind to exist freely. Give yourself space for that.

You are doing great, Shore Local Mom! Keep that beautiful light shining by prioritizing yourself this week and beyond.

What’s Below the Surface: 10 Creatures You’ll Find in New Jersey Waters

o you ever think about what’s on the ocean floor of the Jersey Shore? It’s probably the last thing you want to think about, especially when you’re boogie-boarding with your kids on a hot summer day.

Despite any creepy-crawly fears, learning about our friends under the sea will make you more conscious of your environment and island habitat!

Here’s what you’ll find below the surface on your local NJ beach:

Harbor Seal

These puppy-like creatures are all around the beaches, especially in the springtime. According to the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey, the Jersey shore is the

largest “haul-out” site for harbor seals, meaning that seals travel across the east coast for mating and feeding. Seals are mammals, so they need to come up for air often, so they can be found in shallow waters, even in the summers.

Adults can be about six feet long, weighing almost 300 pounds. Even though they are very cute, these creatures can be dangerous, so make sure to keep your distance if you spot a seal nearby.

Atlantic Octopus

Although rare in colder waters, you might catch an Atlantic Octopus on the bay off Atlantic City. Octopi hunt at dusk, searching for mollusks, crabs, and lobsters. It paralyzes its prey by secreting poison through its tentacles and then uses its suckers to wiggle its meal out of its shell. These animals are

incredibly smart, smart enough to catch a crab out of a trap or unscrew a jar. Although octopi are colorblind, they have special receptors that allow them to blend into their environment, like a chameleon. You’ll typically find an octopus around coral or rocks, so be careful when exploring the seafloor!

Humpback whales are common in almost every ocean, but populate Jersey waters when the bay is cold, particularly in the spring, winter, and fall. They search for food, eating up to 300 pounds of krill and small crustaceans per day! They reach up to 60 feet in length, with females being larger than males.

Humpback whales have the largest fin of any other whale species. This species is on both the federal and state endangered species list, so be careful about maintaining your fishing nets so whales don’t get caught. Lined Seahorse

Sometimes called the Northern Seahorse, these creatures can be found between rocks and coral across the Atlantic Ocean, from Nova Scotia to Panama. They span in color, ranging from yellow to black. They

feed on tiny crustaceans and use their beak to suck their prey out of their shell. Uniquely these animals breed monogamously, for life, and the males get pregnant and have babies!

rays fall into a category of their own. Along the Jersey shore, shark sightings are often mistaken for cownose rays!

Horseshoe Crabs

You’ve definitely seen these along the beach. These rounded discs come to mate on the Atlantic coast and can be identified by their translucent color and clover design in the center.

Moon jellies can be found close to the ocean’s surface because they primarily feed on plankton, which grow in the sunlight. That means it’s often eaten by sea birds, though. Its sting is relatively benign to humans (if you are stung, you may feel a mild stinging sensation that should disappear quickly).

These bizarre-looking creatures are a blast from the past – one of the last remaining creatures from the Paleozoic era (445 million years ago). Their blood contains a special clotting agent, Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate (LAL), that assists humans with infection detection and with tolerating prosthetic devices such as knee replacements and heart valves.

These crabs are common on the Jersey Shore and around the Delaware Bay. They are most common between May and August, so keep your eyes peeled at the beach!

Cownose Ray

This stingray is common around the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic shorelines. They have a wingspan of three feet and can weigh up to 50 pounds. Their diet consists of various types of clams, which draw the rays close to the beach. Mating takes place between June and July, and after an 11-month gestation period, females raise a single pup for the rest of the summer. Although they appear as if they are skates or stingrays, cownose

These turtles can be identified by their reddish-brown color and large head. They primarily eat jellyfish and crustaceans.

Loggerhead turtles are currently threatened by beach development and ocean pollution, so be sure to care for turtles if you spot a mother or eggs on the beach near you.

Somewhat scary to think about, this NJ shark grows up to 10 feet long and up to 300 pounds.

It’s sometimes referred to as the “ragged-tooth shark” because its toothy grin makes it stand out compared to other shark species. These sharks prefer warm water, so they are most com-

mon along the Jersey Shore in the summer. They migrate to shallower waters in the summer as well, searching for small fish to feed on. There’s some evidence to indicate that the Delaware Bay area is a primary mating ground for these sharks, according to the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ. Sand Tiger sharks are critically endangered in some parts of the Atlantic Ocean and are considered a Species of Concern for NJ.

Sea turtles populate all areas of the Atlantic Ocean, but migrate to the

There are two types of hermit crabs – land crabs, which breathe with lungs, and ocean crabs, which breathe with gills. Hermit crabs are so entrenched in their shell that if they were threatened by a bird, their bodies would rip apart easier than a crab would be ripped out of its shell!

In conclusion, make sure to always keep the health and safety of yourself and these animals in mind. If you spot a sea animal while you are basking on the beach, keep your distance. If you notice a marine mammal in trouble, contact the Marine Mammal Stranding Center at 609-266-3508.

AC Arts Foundation is geting bigger & better

he Atlantic City Arts Foundation was chosen by the State of New Jersey as one of four community-based organizations to participate in an Art Grant Program focused on bringing

awareness to coastal hazard impacts.

ACAF, host of the annual 48 Blocks Arts Celebration, has gained a great deal of notoriety since its inception in 2015. This week, ACAF in partnership with art educators, Rebecca Shultz and Nancy Agati, completed a state-level project for a meaningful cause.

In 2020, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Coastal Management Program (CMP) was awarded a grant that would fund community-based art installations intended to raise awareness about coastal hazard impacts.

In partnership with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the rigorous application process began last year, culminating in an educational art installation at the foot of the Absecon Lighthouse completed on August 13th.

The “Water Table” installation, funded through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), was one of four projects throughout the state of New Jersey chosen to participate in the NJ Coastal Resiliency Art Program.

The purpose of the program, as explained by the State of NJ, is “to engage communities in new ways, to increase their awareness and understanding of flooding risks in the coastal zone, and introduce other risk communication tools being produced by the CMP.” “Water Table” can be found at the base of the Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City and viewed from various points from the lighthouse stairs.

The landscaped mosaic is made of permeable surfaces including sea glass, crushed brick, shells, sand, stone, woodchips, and gravel.

These permeable materials allow for water absorption in a way that concrete or asphalt cannot. Landscaping materials with a porous nature such as these have the power to mitigate coastal flooding.

Artists Rebecca Shultz and Nancy Agati conceptualized the “Water Table” installation as a means for viewers to contrast water absorption as rainwater or tidal surges run through the piece. The mosaic was created with the help of community members who submitted designs that could be incorporated into the piece as well as materials that were used to bring it to life.

Members of the community were invited to lend helping hands as the mosaic was installed. From raking up sand to adding in plants and sea glass, members of the Atlantic City community were integral in seeing “Water Table” through to fruition.

The Special Improvements Division of the CRDA aided in digging the perfectly sized hole for the installation.

While viewers are invited to

visit the “Water Table” installation anytime during Absecon Lighthouse hours, educational demonstrations are planned for the future as well.

The first demonstration is scheduled for this Sunday, August 22nd as a part of the 48 Blocks Arts Celebration series.

“Abby,” as the Absecon Lighthouse is affectionately nicknamed, will be bustling this Sunday starting with the Live Well AC Farmers Market beginning at 9am. The 48 Blocks AC Absecon Lighthouse event will overlap, beginning at 11am.

The day will include visual demonstrations by Shutlz and Agati, live music, hands-on t-shirt design, art exhibits and more.

Jean Muchanic and the entire Absecon Lighthouse team have been gracious hosts to this meaningful art installation, recent farmer’s markets, healing seminars and more. The Absecon Lighthouse has served as a homebase for community healing in infinite ways.

Jewish Family Service Expands Food Pantry

ewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties has tripled the size of its existing food pantry and added perishable products, fresh produce, vegetables, meats, poultry and protein rich foods. The modified JFS Pantry also includes two wings with a complete Family Pantry catering to children age five and younger with diapers,

wipes, formula, rice cereal and other necessities. This year, JFS anticipates distributing over 100,000 pounds of food to individuals and families in the county as the need continues to rise due to the unprecedented economic environment. The Grand Opening of the pantry was held August 12th.

I

n the summer heat, the last thing we feel like doing is prepping and eating a meal.

The hot temperatures zap up all our energy. However, we need good nutrition to keep our energy going throughout our busy day. Snacking on the go is helpful when our appetite leaves us. Foods like chilled hard-boiled eggs, fruit smoothies, herb-infused water such as orange-basil water are good ideas to incorporate throughout the day.

It’s also imperative to drink water often. Drinking lots of water is a good way to cool down our internal body temperature. I suggest drinking half your body weight in ounces per day. Many foods also contain water to keep us hydrated in these warm summer months.

Here is a meatless recipe to enjoy all summer long! This recipe can be found in my cookbook Nancy’s Recipes for Life, which is available in my Linwood office location, and in Capellas Oil and Vinegar Store in Ocean City.

Feta and Spinach Casserole

Ingredients: ● 3 egg whites ● 1 large handful of organic baby spinach leaves ● 1 large tomato, chopped ● 1/4 cup of onions, chopped ● 1/4 cup of crumbled feta cheese ● Salt pepper to taste

Directions: Chop onion and tomatoes. Spray pan with oil. Put in medium heat. Start with onions and cook till desired consistency. Just before you take it off the heat, take half of the feta cheese and melt it in a pan. Slide out onto a plate.

Garnish with the other half of feta on top and salt and pepper to taste.

Gibson and his wife Elizabeth are donating this season to the Philadelphia food bank charity “Philabundance” for every strikeout he throws, and to “Cradles to Crayons” for every win by the Phillies. Gibson, 33, won his first two starts. And it didn’t take long for the community to feel that impact, too. “Philabundance” is the region’s largest food bank and distributes more than 24 million pounds of food a year to those in need in the Delaware Valley. “Cradles to Crayons” provides children in need with essential items, such as backpacks, coats, shoes, toys, and books. Of course, the secret is out now on wide receiver Quez Watkins who’s been having an outstanding training camp by all indications. Watkins caught a short bubble-screen pass from backup QB Joe Flacco and then took it 79-yards to the house for a touchdown. Watkins could’ve had a second touchdown earlier in the game, but Jalen Hurts overthrew him when he had a step on the corner. I think Watkins has good speed, and will only shine more when top pick DeVonta Smith returns.

Speaking of which, Smith was back as a limited participant at the first joint practice the Eagles had with the Patriots at the NovaCare Complex on Monday.

This is always fascinating to me that teams now welcome another NFL team into their complex to practice and train. Especially the Patriots, right? Those two are scheduled to meet at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday August 19th with the final preseason game for the Eagles scheduled for Friday August 27th at the Jets in East Rutherford.

In basketball, the Sixers have one more game to play in Las Vegas Summer League action as I write this. Paul Reed has been the big story for the Sixers so far as the power forward / center became the second player in NBA Summer League history to have a 20-20 game the other night. Reed had 27 points, 20 rebounds, four assists, four steals and four blocks in Sunday’s 99-96 overtime loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The second-year player went 11-for-17 from the field, including making 2 of 3 three-pointers. Keep in mind, this came one night after a 14-point, 10-rebound effort in a 100-80 loss to the Boston Celtics. Keep an eye on Reed and if this offense can translate to the regular season!

The Summer League games don’t really count, but Sixers fans are getting an opportunity to learn more about Reed, Tyrese Maxey, Isaiah Joe, and first-round pick Jaden Springer. In the end, the Summer League is about seeing what you have in your rookies, and also seeing if your second-year players can take a big step forward. I’d say, so far, so GOOD. Which leaves us with the Flyers out of the four major pro sports to still discuss. The latest news there is that the Flyers development

Most folks were content to take a picture or say a kind word, but I was thrilled to get a minute or two with Grammer and tell him how much I admired his work recently in “Dr. Death” which I wrote about here in SHORE LOCAL. I also got to tell him how much I enjoyed his series “Boss” that ran on Starz for two seasons in 2011 and 2012. He was so GOOD in that series and he smiled when I mentioned it, making sure to thank me for recognizing his good work.

Plus, who can forget his role in “Top Gun” in 1986…? I personally thought his best acting job was when he portrayed the late Jim Morrison in “The Doors” movie in 1991, Oliver Stone’s look at the legendary singer and group. I’m writing about this because my girlfriend and I watched “Val” his 2021 documentary film on Amazon Prime that includes a lot of behind the scenes footage that Kilmer himself shot. Kilmer had amassed over 800 hours of footage of that featured him growing

up, attending school, auditioning, his career, and family. Previously the footage had sat in boxes for years, but once Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer and began losing his voice, it made him want to tell his story. The film is narrated by Kilmer's own words, through his son Jack Kilmer. I found this to be fascinating and extremely watchable.

I’ll close with a word about COVID-19 and the delta variant. It is my continued hope that you stay safe, stay healthy, and if a place requires you to wear a mask, it’s for a reason.

For local car enthusiasts, one of the most anticipated events of the year is back this September 24th and 25th from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm in Wildwood. Although the event usually takes place on the boardwalk, the ongoing maintenance work has meant the show has been shifted to Downtown Wildwood on Pacific Avenue, with a second exciting location added at the Wildwoods Conventions Center.

The main exhibition will be at the Pacific Avenue location, which will host vendors, entertainment, and more. The venue will be showing a variety of fan-favorite classic cars,

which typically line the boards. The makes and models of these cars all differ with all being at least 25 years or older. The show starts at 9 am and runs until 3:30 pm on both Friday, September 24th and Saturday, September 25th, giving spectators ample time to enjoy the cars, restaurants, bars, and shops over the two days. On Sunday 26th, at 10 am, there will be an awards ceremony which participants are invited to attend and find out who wins Downtown Top 40, Best of Show Stock, Best of Show Modified, and The Old School Me-

morial Awards. Participants and ticket holders can access t he Wildwoo ds Convention Center during the day and at night during entertainment hours.

The event is being organized by JSM productions, who are behind several of the most prominent motor events in Southern New Jersey. As last year’s was canceled, this has become a highly-anticipated event, and JSM productions have ensured that this year’s event will be better than ever.

Daniel, who attended the event when it last happened in 2019, said “This is a great classic car expo. It is simple, not overwhelming with hundreds of cars, and all the ones on display have been hand-picked for this show in particular. The organizers are great because they know the crowd and they know exactly what they are looking for and are interested in. I was pretty upset when it got canceled last year, so I am really excited for it to be on again this year! If you are thinking about going, just do it – you won’t regret it!”

Many Opting For A Green Burial (part one)

n today's modem world oftexting, online shopping and dinner being delivered to your door by DoorDash it seems there is no limit to how the very basics of life have changed in the past years. Instant gratification and convenience dominate our society as every industry struggles to make the product and/or service faster, better and cheaper. The Funeral industry is no different, coming up with better ways to properly memorialize your loved one with online funeral services and different cremation options to make things cleaner and fitting. But there is a segment of the population that looks for, if not yearns for a simpler way of honoring their loved one. This method is actually a return to a more traditional way of final disposition that are ancestors followed. Today this method has been dubbed Green Burial!

What is green burial? Many have never heard of it before. Put simply green burial is a natural way of laying a deceased loved one to rest without a lot of modem traditional methods that are not environmentally friendly. To better understand what green burial is it is important to understand what the

traditional methods of disposition are.

First, there is traditional burial which many people are familiar with. This method consists of usually embalming the deceased with a chemical solution of formaldehyde or glutaraldehyde.

Then the deceased is dressed, has cosmetics put on and placed in a metal or wooden casket for a public viewing and service. Following the service the loved one is taken to a cemetery for burial and this usually consists of placing the casket in a concrete or metal vault in the ground. Once the casket is in the vault, the vault lid is placed on and then both the vault and casket are covered over with earth. The grave is then traditionally marked with a monument of some kind denoting the location of the deceased. Now what was just described is the standard type of traditional burial service but there are many variations of this such as graveside services to crypt entombment but that is another article for another time.

Getting teens off screen and moving to build healthy habits for life Shore Fit

ecently I was thinking about how I grew up and how different it is for today’s kids with all the electronic devices at their fingertips. Getting teenagers into the routine of exercising though is important. It increases the likelihood that they will grow up to value healthy living and stay active.

Although it takes a lot of effort on the part of parents, schools and communities to develop this habit, it will make a long lasting impression. Exercise should be a regular part of your day, like brushing your teeth, eating, and sleeping. It can be in gym class, joining a sports team, or working out on your own. The nice thing about high school sports is that they have specific days

for weight training but if you’re not on a sports team, what can you do? I have some tips to get the kids moving!

Find an activity that you think is fun.

You are more likely to keep with it if you choose something you like. A lot of people find it's more fun to exercise with someone else, so see if you can find a friend or family member to be active with. My daughter and I work out together and we have a great time.

Small changes can add up to better fitness too. For example, walk or ride your bike to school or to a friend's house instead of getting a ride. Use the stairs instead of the escalator or even park far away (if you drive) and get in those extra steps before entering your destination. Whatever you choose, make sure it includes aerobic activity that makes you breathe harder and increases your heart rate. This is the best type of exercise because it increases your fitness level and makes your heart and lungs work better. It also burns off body fat. Examples of aerobic activities for teens are basketball, running, flag football, biking or swimming. These are just a few ideas that are also enjoyable for teenagers.

You also don’t want to forget to warm up prior to any exercise with some easy exercises or mild stretching before you do any physical activity. This warms your muscles up and may help protect against injury. Stretching makes your muscles and joints more flexible too. It is also important to stretch out after you exercise to cool down your muscles.

Watch less TV or spend less time playing computer or video games. (Use this time to exercise instead!) Or exercise while watching TV. I was just telling my family this the other day. My grandmother used to exercise and stretch on the floor while watching TV. She was in great shape her entire life and I know that made a lasting impression on me. Sit on the floor and do crunches or stand and do squats while watching your favorite show. Make it a game and do Jumping Jacks during commercials.

Also, make sure you drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after any exercise (water is best but flavored

sports drinks can be used if they do not contain a lot of sugar). This will help replace the electrolytes lost. Get 9 to 10 hours of sleep every night. I know this is a tough one for teens but sleep is so important.

The goal for teens should be to do some type of exercise every day. It is best to do some kind of aerobic activity without stopping for at least 30 to 60 minutes each time. Do the activity as often as possible, but don't exercise to the point of pain. Always rate yourself on a scale from 1-10 on how you’re feeling. Can you do more or should you scale back? Starting this path early on in life can last well into adulthood. Leading a healthy lifestyle by making fitness a priority will only yield positive results.

tlantic City is finally welcoming back another summer tradition that was taken away by Covid-19. Every year thousands of Atlantic City and South Jersey Residents would set up their summer calendars based on The Atlantic City Free Summer Concert Series. This year the Atlantic City Free Concert Series is back for 2 great days.

Each year Vannessa Jordan, President of The National R&B Society Inc. works with the city of Atlantic City to bring concerts to Gardner’s Basin free of charge.

These concerts are more than just entertainment. The concert series brings the community together for fellowship and fun.

Each time I attend, I see people from my past I have not seen in years.

Seeing friends for me is much more important than who’s on stage.

The series has brought some of the brightest stars from hip hop and R&B to Atlantic City over the years, including The Sugar Hill Gang, Dennis Edwards’ Temptations, and Howard Hewett of the 1980’s group Shalamar.

The concert is more than the gold

and platinum, Grammy winners that have appeared on stage over the years because the experience also gives an opportunity for SJ bands and vocalists to take the stage and open for the super stars.

In many ways, The Atlantic City Free Concert Series is a family version of what Atlantic City’s World Famous Club Harlem used to be.

This year the Atlantic City Free Concert Series returns with almost 20 bands and performances.

Sunday August 22nd 1pm to 7:30pm Hosted By Bowlegged Lou from the group Full Force and the film House Party Headliners Include The Manhattans, The System, Meli'sa Morgan and Jean Carne.

Cocktail Recipe Exclusive Thyme to Shine

2 lemons, and 1 lime, sliced. Add a large handful of fresh thyme.

Let steep for up to 1 week, shaking daily. Strain.

Making the Drink: Fill a shaker with ice. Add 1.5oz infused vodka, 2 oz. grapefruit juice, and ¾ ounce Rose’s Lime Juice.

Shake vigorously.

Strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with more fresh thyme to serve.

wo weeks ago, I hosted a cocktail event called Fresh to Death Cocktails at Passion Vines in Somer’s Point. We focused on incorporating fresh herbs and fruit into our drinks for a refreshing summer experience as we sipped three delicious cocktails. I do about four cocktail tastings a year and every single one sells out – it’s a humbling and hectic experience to say the least, and I look forward to it each season. If you missed out on this last cocktail tasting, I’ve got a taste of the fun right here for you. Here are recipes for the crowd’s top two favorites from the night.

Mint Condition

Infusing the Vodka: Pour 1 750ml bottle of vodka (we used Tito’s) into a larger jar to leave space for the fruit. Add 1 orange,

Ingredients: ● Peaches ● Allen’s Peach Schnapps ● Bacardi Silver Rum ● Club Soda ● Fresh Mint ● Lime ● Orange Juice Muddle 2 slices of peach, 3-4 mint leaves, ½ oz orange juice, and ¾ oz. of lime juice in a glass. Add ½ oz. Peach Schnapps and 1 oz. Bacardi. Fill with ice. Top with a splash of club soda, stir, and serve garnished with lime and mint.

These will taste just as good prepared in your own kitchen as they did the night we all drank them at the event. That being said, I still hope to see you at the next cocktail event in the fall, where we’ll taste three more original seasonal cocktails. was driving one day and got to thinking about all that we take for granted every time we head out to the highway. We just assume that everything is going to work. However, that assumption can only take us so far. Even if we’re driving a new car, we need to take personal responsibility to keep things running smoothly.

We must stay on top of things such as regular oil changes, checking your tires, tune-ups, and more. However, sometimes we forget. That’s where the warning lights kick in. We can choose to ignore those warning lights, or pay attention and check out whatever they are warning us about.

It’s the same thing with our personal growth. It requires work and attention on our part. Not only that, but we also have to be in a mindset of being alert to warning signs that we feel or see around us. With summer coming to an end very soon, we will be entering a new season. For many parents, it’s back to school. For most, it’s in-person for the first time in a while. That will

require adjustments for the whole family. This new season may also mean back to in-person work, or maybe more remote work. Either way, there will be adjustments.

For you, the warning lights may already be going off. If they are, don’t ignore them. Find a way to address what they are saying. It could be your health, your home or work environment, personal growth, or a thousand other areas of your life.

Consider what you’re reading today as one of those warning lights. You probably already know what areas of your life you need to address and give more attention to. You and I can choose to ignore what we see, but it’s going to come back to bite someday. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but eventually. My challenge this week is don’t allow your personal growth and development to become stagnant. Don’t get to the point where one day everything ceases up, and you come to a dead halt. The time for action is now.

hen most people hear the name Renault, they almost automatically think of great wine and a beautiful event venue out

by Egg Harbor City. Well, they should, but they should also think about great golf too.

Part parkland, and part links, Vineyard National Golf Club, part of VIVAMEE Hospitality is a terrific and thoughtfully designed 18-hole gem which features wide, forgiving fairways and manicured greens winding in and out and all around Renault’s historic 1864 vines in the heart of New Jersey’s Pine Barrens.

With picturesque ponds, traps, and some massive waste areas to have to carry, plus three or four split fairways and three drive-able par 4s, Vineyards National provides players of every level of ability several thrilling risk-reward opportunities. It has been and continues to be a favorite golfing destination for local golfers and golfers from around the world.

Meet Shasta

Shasta is a beautiful, young female Lab mix. She is approximately 1 1/2 years old and about 50lbs. Check out her adorable white freckles! She is playful and outgoing, and some of her hobbies include going for walks, playing ball in the yard, snacking, and sitting close to people. Shasta is looking for a new family with similar interests.

Rescued from a life outside with her 7 kittens, momma cat Junie B. is ready for a home of her own! Junie is only about a year old and can now be a kitten herself and enjoy the finer things in life! She loves long naps and good meals, gentle head pets (she wants love on her own terms), and talking to you when she needs anything! This little lady is very vocal!

Junie is an inside-only cat who would do best in a quiet home with adults, and preferably no other pets, or possibly one other cat (a young cat would be a great match because she is very maternal), or a cat who has a similar temperament as hers.

Raymond Tyler

n incredible amount of talent and love goes into each edition of Shore Local Newsmagazine. Our “Meet The Team” series was created to share the stories behind the Shore Local storytellers.

Each week, we will introduce you to one member of the Shore Local team as we honor and celebrate every individual that makes Shore Local possible.

Raymond Tyler has been a pillar within the South Jersey media network for over 15 years.

As a poet, journalist, DJ, event host, and so much more, Raymond Tyler is highly regarded in and around South Jersey for his commitment to the arts.

Raymond’s journalism career began nearly two decades ago when he began writing for a former publication, Pleasant News. As Raymond describes it, his career has been a series of semi-lucky breaks and many blessings. His commitment to his craft has landed Tyler in opportunistic spaces on more than one occasion. His first big break came when he was offered the opportunity to write for The Source Magazine, a popular publication centered around hip hop.

Since then, Raymond Tyler’s career in journalism and media has been on an upward trajectory.

After writing on a national level at The Source, Vibe, and Essence, Tyler began writing locally again for several publications in Philadelphia and South Jersey. He has been a founding

member of several new radio stations and news outlets, including Shore Local Newsmagazine.

As Cindy and Bob Fertsch were preparing to launch the first issue of Shore Local Newsmagazine, Raymond Tyler was excited to be a part of a groundbreaking new publication. As a journalist who prides himself on shining light on underserved people and communities, the creative freedom that Shore Local offered was a refreshing opportunity for Tyler.

His radio show, The Light, became his inspiration for his weekly column. Throughout his stories, Tyler brings attention to people and events, with a focus on black and brown communities.

“I am incredibly appreciative to have a seat at the table where I can tell stories that would not otherwise be covered in local news sources,” explains Tyler in reference to Shore Local, “I am able to tell stories from my community and my perspective.”

Tyler’s coverage during the Covid-19 pandemic shined light on the inequities within underprivileged communities when it came to testing and education. While sharing valuable and pertinent information with the community, he also used his platform to highlight the good news that was happening in the shadows of the darkness during 2020.

The Light features a variety of stories throughout the year including local artist events, happenings in and around Atlantic City, and unique insight and perspective from the incomparable, Raymond Tyler.
