So I am letting the dishes sit and clothes pile up in the hamper, to enjoy the season. Not too long ago, I prided myself on being a "hustler" and my ability to "get it done." Now, rather, I am focused on being present with my loved ones.

Regardless of what the commercials or major retailers tell us, it is still very much summer. So soak up the sun, salty air and take it in. This issue of Shore Local is overflowing with fun summer events and activities. Check out the many features that highlight the people, places and events our area is famous for, including the Seafood Festival on page 34. Our local musicians are world class, so follow them on Shore Local's Live & Local Music Calendar on page 11. I especially enjoyed reading the story of Jon Dorenbos in this issue on page 12. It's halftime for the Summer of 2021: Here's how it stacks up

nd just like that, August is here. And Labor Day looms large, just one month away. It happens without fail every year. We shiver through a seemingly endless winter, wander through the sometimes damp and dreary spring at the shore, driven by the hope for a long, sunny, and warm summer. For many of us, the long never works out, even though summer is technically the longest of the four seasons in terms of length. Summer has 94 days, with spring right behind it at 93. Fall is 90 days long, and believe it or not, there are only 89 days of winter. Yet summer always seems to fly by the fastest, right?. So if it can't be as long as we'd like, at least Mother Nature could make

good on our other wishes for warmth and sunshine. So has she so far in 2021? There's no better time than the halfway point of the summer season to look at how we stack up so far. Temperatures: There hasn't been a whole lot out of the ordinary temperature-wise so far this season. June ran about a degree warmer than average, which isn't too significant, while July was close to average. I always use the number of 90-degree days in any given year as a good measuring stick as to how hot a summer has been. And so far this season, the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY), where records are kept in South Jersey, we've seen 18 days above that Photo by Cary Sagady. 90-degree threshold. There there's nothing too unusual. In a typwere 2 in May, 6 in June, and 10 in July, with August and September still ical summer, we'll see about 17-20 to come. In addition, we've sweated days at or above 90° in South Jersey, through 3 heat waves so far in 2021, so if we keep up our current pace, this two 3 day heat waves and one that summer will likely run a little above lasted 4 consecutive days. Here too, that. That's nothing compared to the blisteringly hot summer of 2011, when over 40-something days soared past the 90-degree mark. Rainfall: In terms of rain and severe storms, this summer has been a little more noteworthy, especially during the month of July. After average rain throughout the month of June, July delivered nearly double the normal monthly rainfall to much of the area. That's thanks to multiple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms, several episodes of flash flooding, and of course Tropical Storm Elsa, which zipped up the coast early in the month. In true summer-time fashion, it certainly didn't rain everywhere equally. But while parts of New England and the entire western United States are in a drought, an exceptional one out west, we're certainly not wanting for water here at home. Tornadoes: Perhaps more than anything else, this will be the summer . of the tornado. There wasn't just one, but two separate tornado outbreaks across central and southern New Jersey so far this summer. The first was due to the aforementioned Elsa in early July, which spawned one tornado in Woodbine in Cape May County and another in Little Egg Harbor in Ocean County. Then on the last Thursday in July, an unusually intense and widespread tornado outbreak for this part of the country led to at least 9 confirmed tornadoes across

eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. While the tornadoes spared the South Jersey shore, areas farther north weren't so lucky. Several tornadoes touched down in Mercer County around Trenton, and closer to the coast, several more tornadoes and a waterspout touched down in Ocean County from Waretown to Barnegat Light at the northern tip of Long Beach Island. Given that the entire state of New Jersey averages around two tornadoes in an entire year, to say this year has been unusually busy is an understatement. And of course, we still have most of a hurricane season to go yet as well. Water temperatures: Our surf temperatures near the coast have had their ups and downs, as they do every summer since they are dependent on what the wind is doing. We haven't hit 80-degree water so far this summer, which isn't expected for any given season but is always a treat if we do. So far, the warmest surf temperatures occurred in mid-July around July 15th through the 18th, when the water was consistently between 75 and 78 degrees. A few bouts of upwelling have dramatically dropped it to around the low 60s for brief spells. Yet we've spent most of the summer near our 70-degree average. Eye on the tropics: After a busy start with 5 named storms through early July, we've enjoyed a lull throughout the tropical Atlantic of late. But the end to the calm is imminent, as a busy six week stretch in the Atlantic Basin should begin by mid-month. So that's where we've been. Where are we going? Well, let's hope summer is saving its best for last with nothing but warm and sunny days, warm yet refreshing ocean water, and a summer free of any other tornado to tropics concerns. Here's hoping! Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Decorations Drawn From Nature: Inviting the Earth Into Your Home By Sarah Fertsch

here’s no mistake - we all have too much stuff. From overflowing closets to tens of knick-knacks, we spend too much money and time absorbed

in our possessions. We decorate our homes with so many little trinkets that it can bog down your lifestyle. You end up feeling cluttered and cramped. This summer, instead of hitting the department store and buying seasonal decor, practice some creativity and create decor from the world around you. Here are my

recommendations for ways to make your home feel like a warm, tropical, natural home:

Shell Art

If you are an avid beach goer like myself, I am sure you hide mountains of collected shells in junk drawers and baskets. Make use of these natural beauties and put your own creative spin on the graceful curves and edges. With some simple cleaner, wash out the shells and let them dry. Use acrylic paint and design the shells to your liking. Paint a wave of the side or etch your monogram. Place the dried shells in your garden, on your window sill, or even in a beautiful bowl as a centerpiece. You’ll be hunting for shells with a crafty eye soon!

Wild Bouquets

Celebrate the loveliness of the season and bring flowers and plants inside! Check out a local farmer’s market and pick up a bouquet of wildflowers and set them around your home (in the kitchen, on the coffee table, or even in the bath-

room). Collect flowers grown outside (tiger lilies, daisies, or hydrangeas) from around your porch and lay them around your mantle. You could even press the flowers into a book or send a dried flower in the mail to a friend (I recommend lavender!). Your house will smell fantastic, too!

Refurbish Driftwood

If you find some driftwood on the beach, keep it! Clean it off with some soap and water, and lay it around your home. The smooth wood will bring calming, natural vibes to your space. Look for more abstract shapes to create artistic interest! Place the driftwood on your table, in your garden, or beside your pond! Make the most of our beachy neighborhood and collect the sea’s bounty!

Plants, Plants, Plants!

If you love the natural look, pick up some plants to spruce up your home (pun intended). Invest in a lemon tree and enjoy its beauty, and drink lemonade all-year-round! Add lemon zest to recipes and you’ll love that extra kick of citrus. Grow aloe and when sunburn strikes, break off a segment and save your skin! Start your own herb garden and make some pesto with basil, iced tea with mint, and tacos with cilantro! Plants even help you concentrate (the extra oxygen in your home is good for brain health). Bonus: connect with friends and propagate plants to save money and share a sweet gift! When we decorate our homes with natural beauty, we can relish in the glory of the world around us, and be encouraged to spend more time in the Great Outdoors! s we head into the final month of summer I am sharing three awesome cocktails to kick-off August. Summer at the shore isn’t over yet, but the arrival of August brings us the sad reminder that our summer days limited. What better way to combat the August blues than with a refreshing summer cocktail? So, grab some ice and your favorite cocktail shaker and let’s whip up these three must-try cocktail recipes to help savor the last weeks of summer.

The Danny Ocean

This recipe is named after George Clooney’s iconic movie character and features the tequila

Casamigos, which is Clooney’s tequila company. I first tried this recipe while on vacation and knew it would make for the perfect summer drink for sipping at the shore. Ingredients ● 1 1/2 oz. Casamigos Reposado Tequila ● 3/4 oz. fresh lemon juice ● 3/4 oz. fresh pink grapefruit juice ● 1/2 oz. agave nectar ● 1/4 oz. maraschino liqueur Instructions ● Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. ● Shake well. Strain into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice. ● Garnish with a grapefruit slice. Note: This recipe serves 1.

Rumchata Cold Brew

Inspired by my love of a good cold brew, this cocktail combines the refreshing jolt of cold coffee with creamy RumChata for a drink that is perfect for any time

Frozen Blueberry Margarita

1/4 cup lemon juice 2 tablespoons lime juice ● 2 tablespoons simple syrup ● 1 oz triple sec ● 1 oz blueberry simple syrup or liqueur ● 24 ice cubes Instructions ● Add the blueberries, tequila, lemon and lime juices, simple syrup, triple sec, blueberry liqueur, and ice to a blender with ice-crushing ability. Summertime is perfect for grilling shish kebabs

hish kebabs and summer are the perfect combination. You can grill in the backyard for guests or for a weeknight dinner that the kids will love. Eating anything on a stick makes it extra fun! Turn up the flavor of your kebabs with a marinade. Cook the kebabs on a preheated grill over medium-high heat. Rotate every few minutes to cook all sides evenly. Cook until the outside has those nice grill marks and the meat is cooked to your liking. Be sure that if you are using wooden skewers, you soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before using to prevent them from catching on fire. You can serve the kebabs over a mound of rice or couscous. For a utensil-free meal, wrap the meat and veggies in warm pita bread.

Pineapple BBQ Chicken Kabobs

Ingredients 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into cubes

2 small green peppers cut into 1.5 inch squares ● 2 small red peppers cut into 1.5 inch squares ● 1 red onion cut into chunks ● 2 cups pineapple chunks canned or fresh (both work) ● ¾ cup barbecue sauce ● 3 tablespoons pineapple juice use juice from a can, or drippings from slicing fresh pineapple ● 1 tablespoon soy sauce Instructions Assemble kabobs: Thread chicken, both peppers, onion and pineapple chunks alternately on skewers. Marinate: Whisk together barbecue sauce, pineapple juice and soy sauce. Place the kabobs in a shallow dish and brush with about 1/3 of the marinade. Marinate in the fridge for 15-20 minutes. Grill: Place kabobs on a lightly oiled grill over medium heat. Grill for 12-15 minutes (or until chicken is done and vegetables are tender), turning often, and brushing with the remaining marinade.

Steak Kabobs

Grilled Veggie Kabobs

Ingredients 1 medium zucchini, sliced into half moons ● 1 medium yellow squash, sliced into half moons ● 1 red bell pepper, diced into 1” pieces ● 1 orange bell pepper, diced into 1” pieces ● 8- oz mushrooms, larger mushrooms halved Marinade ● 4 tbsp olive oil ● 1 tbsp red wine vinegar ● 1 tbsp lemon juice ● 2 tsp lemon zest ● 1 tsp dried oregano ● ½ tsp dried thyme ● 1 tsp kosher salt ● ½ tsp ground pepper Instructions Prep the vegetables. Slice into one-inch pieces. Transfer the chopped vegetables to a large mixing bowl. Combine the olive oil, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, lemon zest, oregano, thyme, salt and pepper in a one-cup measuring cup or lidded jar. Whisk or shake until the mixture is well combined. Pour the marinade over the vegetables, then toss until well combined. Marinate 15-30 minutes at room temperature, or cover and refrigerate for up to 12 hours. Thread the vegetables onto skewers: squash, zucchini, red bell, orange bell, and then mushroom (repeat this pattern twice for each skewer). Heat a gas grill to medium high; be sure the grill is fully heated before grilling. Place the vegetable skewers onto the grill in a single layer, leaving a bit of space between each skewer. Close the lid and grill for 10-12 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and slightly charred. Turn once halfway through cooking. Remove from the grill and serve immediately ●

Ingredients For the marinade: ● ¼ cup olive oil ● 2 tablespoons soy sauce ● 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar ● 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce ● 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice ● 2 cloves garlic, minced ● 1 tablespoon brown sugar ● 1 teaspoon paprika ● 1 teaspoon onion powder ● ½ teaspoon dried oregano ● Salt and black pepper, to taste For the kabobs: ● 1 ½ pounds top sirloin steak, cut into 1-inch cubes ● 1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut in 1-inch pieces ● 1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and cut into •1-inch pieces ● 8 ounces button mushrooms ● 1 red onion, cut into 1-inch pieces ● 8 metal skewers (If you are using wood skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes before grilling)

Instructions In a medium bowl, whisk together the oil, soy sauce, red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, garlic, brown sugar, paprika, onion powder, oregano, salt, and pepper. Place the steak in the bowl with the marinade or place both in a large Ziploc bag, making sure the meat is covered in the marinade. Chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour. Thread the marinated meat along with the veggies, alternating them on the skewer. Keep a little space between the pieces so they will cook evenly on the grill. Grill the kabobs on high heat, for 8 to 10 minutes (depending on how you like your meat), turning the kabobs every couple of minutes. Use tongs to remove the kabobs from the grill and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Kimmy’s Safe Haven Looking for Volunteers and Forever Homes

pening your heart and your home to a furry friend in need is one of the best feelings in the world. That’s what Kimmy’s Safe Haven Rescue has been doing since 2016. Located in Egg Harbor City, Kimmy’s Safe Haven Rescue rescues and cares for all types of animals like cats, dogs, pigs, rabbits, goats, chickens, and even a turkey! The rescue is a no-kill safe haven finding homes for cats and dogs that have been neglected, abused, or abandoned locally. The founder Kim Brown financed the building of the animal sanctuary out of pocket and has been dedicated to giving these animals second chances and finding them forever homes.

Kim Brown found her love of working with animals while fostering and volunteering with rescues. She fell in love with and adopted her first two fosters, and continued to foster others. In 2015, Brown lost her younger brother, Matthew, to suicide. He had bipolar disorder, and his loss was one of the hardest things she went through. Helping animals who were suffering helped Kim cope with the loss of her brother. “I needed them just as much as they needed me,” says Brown. “They have no voice.” Brown works hard to share their stories and give them a second chance at a better life. he 17th annual Chip Miller Surf Fest, raising awareness and funds for Amyloidosis research, was held Friday, July 30th in Ocean City. This year was the most successful yet! Over 200 surfers and their families flocked to the 7th Street surfing beach to participate. The event is organized by Lance Miller, of Ocean City, in honor of his father, Chip Miller, who was diagnosed with Amyloidosis in 2003 and passed away a few months later in 2004. Lance formed the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation in honor of his father. The foundation raises both money for research and awareness about Amyloidosis. Although last year’s event had to be canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year, conditions were ideal with great waves and plenty of sunshine.

The fundraising and the fun continued into the night with the 6th Annual Slide for Amyloidosis and Taste of OC at the Ocean City Water Park, with over 500 people in attendance. The Science Behind Jellyfish By Steffen Klenk

ake a moment to picture your perfect beach day. The sun is out, you’re working on your tan and there’s sand between your toes. You decide to go for a swim in the ocean, until you notice an object lurking in the distance. Coming into close encounter with a jellyfish may feel eerie, but there is nothing worse than being stung by one. The feeling of getting stung could ruin anyone’s day. Jellyfish prefer living near the surface of the ocean and thrive in warm temperatures. They typically begin to appear along the beaches around mid-August and mid-September. Why does a jellyfish sting hurt so much? The answer hides in their tentacles. Jellyfish have a special cell that run along their tentacles known as cnidocytes. The cnidae in their

tentacles produce venom that protects them from predators and subdue them. The most common jellyfish you are likely to find wash up along our coastline is the moon jelly. They live up to a year in captivity and feed off of mollusks and plankton. Also known as Aurelia aurita, the moon jelly is known for its pink crescent-shaped underbelly. Box jellyfish may be considered our worst enemy of the bunch. They have tentacles up to nine feet in length and can produce a painful, venomous sting to any of its prey. A new threat has been lurking within the waters of Barnegat Bay. Boaters and swimmers have been keeping a watchful eye for clinging jellyfish. The Gonionemus vertens is about the size of a quarter and has up to 90 tentacles that can produce a sharp sting. They have been spotted just off of ocean waters between

New Jersey and Massachusetts and up and down the West Coast from California to Alaska. The Portugese man o’ war jellyfish, or bluebottles might be fascinating to look at, with its colorful purple-blue appearance, but think twice before approaching one up close. The men o’ wars have thousands of small cells that can pack a painful, sometimes venomous sting. While their tentacles have an average

length as 30 feet, they can extend up to 165 feet. They are mainly found in tropical and subtropical waters and like to travel in colonies. Beachgoers have been spotting the Portuguese man o’war up and down the Eastern seaboard. In recent weeks, residents in Wildwood discovered the brightly-colored stinger while walking the beach. If you should find a man o’war while swimming or walking the beach, do not touch it. Leave it just as you found it and warn the local beach patrol. Most jellyfish stings can be cured using affective treatment. In the event that you get stung by a jellyfish, medical experts advise rinsing the affected sting with vinegar water for at least 30 seconds. Then, using a pair of tweezers, remove the tentacle and soak the affected area in hot water for 20 minutes. Do not apply alcohol to the site or the sting. If you get stung by a box jellyfish or end up with a severe reaction, call 911 to seek urgent medical help. These important tips will help to keep you and your family safe.

ust when you think the summer garden has nothing new to offer this time of year, along comes late-blooming garden phlox. Not to be confused with creeping phlox that grows low to the ground in spring, garden phlox, phlox paniculata, (also known as summer phlox, tall phlox, and fall phlox) towers over the other flowers, boasting its arrival with huge clusters of showy flowers. Pollinators will also notice the star-shaped flowers that have a tubular base, making them attractive to hummingbirds as well as butterflies and bees. These perennials range in color from white to various shades of pink, purple, and red. In my garden, my favorite variety has white flowers with purple eyes (centers), but I also love the soft pinks against the lavender flowers of my vitex (chaste tree). Along with daisies, catmint, and foxgloves, garden phlox is a classic must-have in any cottage garden or herbaceous perennial border garden.

Pollinators like hummingbirds and this Eastern Tiger Swallowtail will be attracted to beautifully scented phlox in your garden. Don’t let the small plants emerging in spring fool you; garden phlox can reach heights of three to four feet or more, so plant it near the middle or back of your garden. When the plants die back from the first frosts in the fall, cut the stems to half their height or to the ground. For the most dramatic visual effect, plant masses of phlox in the same colors together, this will also make the flowers very evident for pollinators passing by. Provide your phlox with a sunny location and rich, moist, but well-draining soil. Because of its tall stem and

Oh No, It’s August Already! Jeff's Journal By Jeff Whitaker

know I’m not the only one who’s thought about this. It was bound to happen at some point. It’s inevitable. It’s August! That means summer is on the downslope. I know many of you don’t want to hear it, but in less than one month, Summer 2021 will be in the books. Sure autumn doesn’t begin officially until late September, but once Labor Day weekend passes, for all intents and purposes so does summer. Before all of you Pumpkin Spice and sweater weather people start to cheer, give us summer-lovers one last chance to enjoy the warm, sunny days. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fall. It’s one of my favorite times of the year, but I’m still hesitant to let summer slip away so quickly. I just want a little more. The good news is it’s only August, and that means we still have a few weeks to check off our bucket list of summer fun. Like anything else in life, making the most of these last three weeks of the season requires intentionality. Let’s make a commitment right now to set aside a few minutes (after you finish reading Shore Local) and decide what the must-dos and must-haves remain. Then figure out a way to make them happen. The truth be told, our family has been able to pack in a lot of what we set out to

do this season. Sure we missed out on some of what we planned, but all in all I feel like we’ve done our best to make the most of our time together. However, there’s still that voice inside that says, “I want just a little more time.” Now before you Jersey Shore Summertime Lovers get too depressed, let’s make a plan. It’s as easy as 1 - 2 - 3. ● Make a list of what you want to accomplish, where you want to go, and who you want to do it with during the time you have remaining this summer. ● Pull up a calendar and look for the times you have open between now and Labor Day weekend. ● Fill in the available times with the activities and places on your list. Make the time. You’re probably thinking, “That’s pretty easy and logical. What’s the big deal?”. You’d be right. However, the key is the fourth step. Without it, Labor Day will come and go with none of this accomplished. The fourth step? Intentional follow through. You have to stick to it. In the end, you’ll be glad you did. By the way, if you’re still looking forward to the sweaters and the pumpkin lattes, no worries. They will be here soon enough. Happy August! Getting You from the Couch to the Finish Line

unning a 5k race is on many bucket lists, but the reality is that it can be intimidating for those who have not run or regularly exercised in a while. For many, the hardest part of running a 5k is the first few steps that are taken well before the starting line: making the commitment to participate in the race, and then mapping out and sticking to a plan to run and finish it. There is a 5k race taking place this fall that would be the perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to make their 5k dreams a reality. The race is Leif’s Legacy 5k Run & Walk that will take place in Sea Isle on October 17, hosted by the Leif Aleutian Foundation. The event was founded by Jen and Brian Larsen in memory of their son, Leif Aleutian, who died in a neonatal intensive care

unit after living 52 hours earth-side. A portion of the funds raised will be donated to the Special Care Nursery at Shore Medical Center, the Larsen’s hometown hospital. Participating in this race not only will help you achieve a personal goal, but it will honor the legacy of Leif Aleutian and benefit newborn care at your local community hospital. So now, what next? For the next steps, I spoke with my friend Scott Rosen at Greate Bay Racquet & Fitness in Somers Point who connected me to fitness trainer Sean Clancy, former track coach for Holy Spirit High School and Stockton University, to provide insight into your training plan. Sean’s first step for those who have not been exercising regularly is to speak with their doctor and get a general physical. Once cleared by a provider, it’s time to check the calendar and map out the strategy. “There is nothing more important than following a healthy and safe training schedule. You can’t go from the couch to the finish line overnight.

Not only will you likely get hurt, but you will likely burn out way before the race,” said Clancy. “Stretching with holds of 20 seconds before and after exercise can not only help prevent injury but it also helps in the recovery process,” continued Clancy. “I also stress increasing water intake during training. That’s extremely important.” Clancy recommends starting with the race date and working backward to see how many weeks you have to get ready. Then, set weekly goals. In the first week, walk 3 times for one mile. The pace should be about 16 minutes per mile, which is equivalent to roughly a 3.5 setting on a treadmill. In week 2, increase the distance to 1.5 miles. In week 3, complete two 1.5-mile walks and then one 1 mile run. By week four, do two one-mile runs and one 1.5 mile walk. You will be encouraged and excited by how far you have come in one month. In the fifth week, replace that walk with a run. By week 6-7, you will be able to

run 1.5 and even 2 miles three times a week without stopping. Slowly increase the distance for the remainder of the weeks up until the race. Sean stresses that new runners should not concern themselves with speed. “It’s important to run at a pace within yourself. Maintain an even heart rate. Racing out of the start at a high speed will only end up raising your heart rate and you will burn out. Swimming at the Flanders: A Look Back in Time

f you were in Ocean City before 1978, you remember the big swimming pool between the boardwalk and the Flanders Hotel. Jack G. Jernee, captain of the Ocean City Beach Patrol, officially opened the large pool, diving pool and kiddies pool on July 27, 1929. He was also poolside on May 30, 1924 when the Flanders' first pool, built between the hotel's solariums, was officially opened. The Flanders' aquatic center was equal to any in the country in size and magnificence. The large pool was 50-yards wide; the diving pool was 10-feet deep and had three diving boards--three, ten and 30 feet high;

and the children had their own shallow wading pool. During the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s water shows were a popular form of summer entertainment, and the shows put on by the Ocean City lifeguards were the best in the country. They were designed to educate, enter-

tain and thrill the people who filled the bleacher surrounding the pools. The International Swimming Hall of Fame, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida has a large exhibit featuring water shows from all over the country and it includes a poster advertising the August 23, 1929 Flanders Water

Carnival. The main attraction was Olympic swimming champion Johnny Weissmuller. Over 5,000 people watched Weissmuller beat Ocean City lifeguards Frank Holt, Matt McConnell and Richard Beatty in the 100-yard freestyle race. Even after the popularity of the water shows ended, the OCBP swimmers continued to train in the large pool and they won a record 13 straight South Jersey Lifeguard Swim Meets between 1960 and 1972. The pools were opened to the public and a large bathhouse was available for people to change and shower. On a hot day 1,500 people would be at the pools by noon. September 4, 1978 the Flanders pool closed, never to open again--a victim of low attendance and high maintenance costs. Playland's Castaway Cove, an amusement park, is now on the pool site.

hey lurk in many of the coastal homes along the shore and occasionally in the homes on the mainland. They may be found in garages, crawl spaces or even bedrooms of some of the homes sometimes only seeing the light of day when conditions are perfect and this past Monday, conditions were perfect. What am I talking about? Surfboards. Although it has been a few years since I hoisted my body which is now more prone to breaking than bending onto a surfboard, I can’t help but imagining myself carving across the face of a clean wave as I watched from the beach. Sure, there were days I went out when the conditions were “blown out” not in pursuit of a

great ride but just to keep my paddling muscles in tune for the 'Big Day." Not too many riders were out in the water on days like that but chose to wait for clean, glassier conditions. Some days, storm waves rose up on their haunches challenging only the more experienced riders. But on Monday in Ventnor and I imagine at many other locales along the shore, it was a rare August day. At a time in the season when the oceans are usually flat, on this day, sets of clean 4-6 footers marched consistently to the shore. They were breaking “outside” meaning on a sandbar before reforming again into a crunching shore break. These outside breaks were always my favorite as I didn’t have to worry about wiping out and being driven headfirst into only a foot of water. It seemed like everyone from young “grommies” to shall we say, surfing veterans were out on the water. Longboarders could be seen waiting for their waves with the noses of their boards angled up towards the sky and shortboarders were sitting on their submerged surfboards. It seemed like if it floated, it was in the ocean that day including boogie

Standing on the beach at Ventnor Pier and seeing all the surfers in the water, I had to wonder; if they took a census in the shore towns of how many surfboards there were, what would be that number. I have three boards, each corresponding to my different age and experience levels and I imagine many others have more than one.

Would that number be in the hundreds or even thousands? Monday was a rare day for those who played with Mother Ocean. I am sure many slept well that night and while others had that familiar muscle soreness that comes with extended, joyful play. I must admit, I did grab the boogie board we bought for family visiting with us and rode some nice shore break. I had a blast and made a mental note. If I grab my fins, I could carve some of those paths across the face of the waves I always imagine. But first, a little stretching. Let’s Get It Started: Five Party Planning Tips to Celebrate Summer

veryone loves a good party, but it takes a lot of work to make a party great. Whether you are hosting a child’s birthday party, a spontaneous cocktail mixer, or a pool party palooza, you need to be prepared for when the party animal calls your name. Don’t worry, friends, I can offer you some well-honed advice to ensure your title as “host with the most.” Here are my tips to make your party great:

Pick a Theme

Themes make everything more exciting (think dances, movies, even amusement parks). Get creative and think about ways to brand or market your party to your guests. Getting together with some neighbors on a

Tuesday? Add some fish tacos and make it a Taco Tuesday. Having some of your daughter’s friends over? Make it a mermaid gala - put on some glittery, scaly makeup, hang up some waves drawn on large paper, and pretend to be a beautiful under-the-sea princess. Is your boss coming over for drinks? Pick up some bottles and create a fancy, homemade wine tasting, and show off your elegance and class. Themes add structure and excitement to any party!

It’s All About Food

Refreshments serve as the center of almost every party, so make sure to have some quick recipes at hand to wow the crowd. Skim through some cookbooks and look for recipes that stand out and appear unique. Serve up some lemon-blueberry pasta or a charcuterie board with mandarin oranges and deep-fried pickles. Plan a beautiful, simple dessert, like fresh, ripe peaches with cream or strawberry shortcake. Mix up a yummy batch

cocktail that compliments the meal and cleanses the palette. I recommend a minty Moscow mule, raspberry rhubarb sangria, or lemonade margarita. It’s time to get creative in the kitchen!

Decorations Matter

Never undervalue the importance of decor. Your guests want to feel special, and the atmosphere you create allows your group to feel comfortable and honored. Pick up some colorful napkin holders from the flea market and show off your eclectic style. Purchase different vintage plates and silverware from a secondhand shop and present each guest with a different table setting. Use old crystal glasses to serve fancy drinks. Your friends and family will notice little, intentional pieces of decor and uplift your event in the best way.

Play the Perfect Playlist

Similar to atmosphere, music will ensure the comfort of your guests

and will make them feel welcomed. Before your party, create a unique playlist to match your party’s intended vibe. If you are hosting a cosplay or video game party, incorporate film scores or video game soundtracks. If you are prepping for a pool party, add some Beach Boys, Jack Johnson, and Jimmy Buffet. If you are planning a low-key dinner party, play some Marvin Gaye, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Rolling Stones. It’s easy to make your own playlists on Apple Music or Spotify, but if you are running late, picking out a party playlist works too.

Hand Out the Perfect Party Favor

The best way to thank your guests for attending your shindig is by providing party favors. Don’t feel too overwhelmed, because a party favor can be easily included in your budget! Head to the dollar store and grab some mason jars, and fill them with candy. Tie a card to the lid and tell your guests “You’re Sweet!” Pick wildflowers and create little bouquets to hand guests on their way out. Bake some extra dessert and give your guests some sweet leftovers. Party favors will remind your guests that you are thoughtful and want them back for your next get-together! The perfect party is only a few steps away. With a little extra effort, you can wow your friends and family, and make your summer memorable!

Make Your Own Homemade Iced Tea and Kombucha

un drinks bring a little pep into any occasion, whether you’re at work, having friends over, or spending an afternoon on the beach. When you’re looking for low-cost, refreshing and unique ideas, try making your own iced tea and kombucha! Experiment with fruity flavors and homegrown herbs, and impress your guests with your own tasty batch! Making Your Own Iced Tea Brewing homemade iced tea is easy, but it’s important to leave time for the leaves to seep. Depending on how much iced tea you make, you’ll want to leave the bags in for approximately three hours per liter of water. Speaking of leaves, the specific tea you use plays an important role in your iced tea. You can pick up some large, iced-tea-designated bags from the grocery store,

and they will usually come in flavors like peach and black tea. For an environmentally friendly alternative, pick up loose-leaf tea from your local farmer’s market and seep the leaves using homemade cheese cloth bags. Loose leaf tea is usually more floral and herbal in flavor. Once you’ve got your leaves prepared, consider adding additional ingredients to enhance the flavor. Add some mashed blueberries or strawberries to add some fruity tartness. Pour in some sugar or honey to sweeten your batch. Add spices like cinnamon and cardamom for an earthy, spicy twist. Get creative and start seeping! Once you’ve let your tea sit for a few hours (depending on size of your batch), strain your tea (especially if you added additional flavor components) and pour over ice. Now you’re ready to serve! For those of you who don’t know, kombucha is a fermented tea that is super flavorful and healthy for your digestive tract. It’s refreshing, tangy and popular. Pick up some kombucha at your grocery store and try it, and if you love it, make some homemade! First, you need to acquire a SCOBY. This is the major ingredient containing bacteria that will ferment your kombucha. You can get a SCOBY from a friend, farmer’s market, or even online! It’s great for your gut, and very healthy! You’ll wanna start with some brewed iced tea - around 1 to 2 cups - and add a piece of your SCOBY. Add 1 cup of sugar (for the bacteria to eat and then produce fermented alcohol) and 1 cup of water. Boil the mixture for five minutes, and let it rest for ten minutes. Pour mixture into sealed glass bottles.

Don’t fill the bottles all the way, because your kombucha needs to breathe! Let it sit between 7 and 21 days in 75-85 degree temperature, and once its fermented, add flavor! We recommend ingredients such as watermelon juice, mint, lemon juice, agave syrup, and honey! Remember, the longer you’re kombucha ferments, the more acidic it will taste. The ph level should be between 2.5 and 3.5, so make sure to test after about a week of fermenting. Add iced tea to the fermented mixture to lighten the vinegar flavor and break up your SCOBY. Once you have a hefty SCOBY, you can make even more kombucha! Making your own drinks adds a little excitement into a summer routine, and your friends will be wowed by your creativity! Start seeping, and enjoy!

Boardwalk Art Shows and Pops’ Salute to Aretha Franklin

he 58th annual Boardwalk Art Show will be held Friday through Sunday (August 6 to 8) on the boardwalk between Eighth Street and 13th Street. The celebration of the arts will include a newer event – the Art of Surfing Festival – Thursday to Saturday (August 5 to 7) at the Ocean City Music Pier.

The Boardwalk Art Show features oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, photography, handmade jewelry, prints and drawings on display and for sale. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Awards are given to the top entries in the show. For Ocean City visitors, this is an opportunity to view and purchase great artwork

Art Corner After retiring from a long career in construction management, Rich wanted to pursue his hobbies of art and carpentry. These two passions culminated in his designing furniture as well as selling his artwork. Stainton's Gallery of Shops gave Rich the opportunity to explore the retail side of his hobbies. One of the original vendors at Stainton's, Rich's space has expanded to include a variety of his original pieces as well as a varied display of home decor items. Rich (a Vietnam veteran) came to the area with his family via New York over 40 years ago and definitely has sand in his shoes. It's My Derby It’s My Derby is a passion for horses and the sport of kings that came to life. Mike Yanniello grew up in Mays Landing with a love for horse racing. As a young teen, he worked the concessions at both the Atlantic City and Monmouth racecourses. He even worked at the Steel Pier’s famous Diving Horse Show. Mike became very familiar with the culture and excitement of horseracing in his early years. That eventually bloomed into a business at Stainton’s. Annual Seafood Festival returns to Bellview Winery

he Mighty Writers is an organization that is inspiring young people to write, read and create their own destiny through the written word. The Mighty Writers organization has established locations in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. This summer The Mighty Writers started an Atlantic City location.

argate is a town known for its great beaches, fantastic restaurants, and an over-sized elephant. Throughout the summer months, there are myriad events that take place, from beach concerts, beach movies, a weekly farmers' market, and sidewalk sales. There's a cornhole league, a beach party, and an annual bike tour. Margate also boasts a miniature golf course and an aqua park. Let's add fishing and a Duck Derby to the long list activities Margate has to offer. Tucked along the water's edge on Amherst Avenue sits an unassuming water enthusiast's haven. Ray Scott's Dock is a family-owned and operated dock that specializes in boat and kayak rentals, crabbing adventures, and boat repairs. With a fully-stocked

bait and tackle shop, Ray Scott's has everything you need for a day on the bay. Ray Scott's offers anglers the opportunity to captain their own skiff. With all the bait and tackle one could need right there in the shop, it's one stop shopping before hitting the back bays. Whether you need to rent rods and reels or just buy some bait, they have you covered. The back bays offer a unique fishing experience. The summertime favorite flounder is the most

popular fish to catch between May and September. If you catch an 18" keeper, the dock will filet it up for you. Catch stripers in the spring, tautog, black seas bass, and bluefish, all right here in Margate. For those interested in crabbing, Ray Scott's has what you need to enjoy a day out on the water catching a bushel. They offer guided trips or rentals for small groups or large. They have all the equipment needed, whether that's hand-lining or drop pots. If fishing isn't quite your thing, rent

some kayaks and paddle around the bay, taking in the wildlife along the intracoastal waterway. Ray Scott's Dock is also home to Margate's very own Duck Derby. The Duck Derby Raffle, which is sponsored by the Margate Business Association, is a fundraiser to benefit community events. The Duck Derby Raffle is run through the state. Participants purchase a ticket with a number that corresponds to a number on a weighted duck. Ducks are numbered one to 2,500. Event planners dump the ducks into a large funnel in the bay at Ray Scott's Dock. Kayakers ensure that the ducks stay in the funnel and move with the current. The first three ducks who come out of the funnel are the winners. First prize is a $1000 Visa prepaid card, second prize is a $500 Visa prepaid gift card, and third prize is a $250 Visa prepaid gift card. We spoke with productivity coach Cara Harvey about some of the challenges that come with being an entrepreneurial mom and how to overcome them. Cara Harvey is the founder of A Purpose Driven Mom, a platform created to help overwhelmed mothers take action

Boundaries

“We know we need them but we often don’t know how to have them well,” explains Cara. Many moms feel guilty about creating boundaries in their lives, feeling like they need to be everything, everywhere, for everyone all of the time. Having boundaries is a way of honoring yourself, respecting your time, and your loved ones’ time. Cara’s tips on boundaries: ● Decide what time you will focus only on your business. Even if it’s thirty minutes of dedicated time per day, block it out for yourself as your time to get to work. ● Communicate your boundaries with those around you. Often, for moms building businesses out of their homes, friends and family tend

to think we are full of free time. It’s important to communicate with the people that you love that you will not be answering personal calls during your work hours or any other boundary that you set in place. Share your work hours with your clients. Make it clear that you will answer inbox messages, emails, and phone calls during your work hours only. This clearly separates work time from family time so that both your clients and your family are able to receive the best version of you.

Grace

Cara, who has managed her business through various seasons of life from newborn babies to now all of her children in school, reminds us to show ourselves grace for the season that we are in. It is easy to fall into the rabbit hole of guilt for not being able to do everything you did prior to having kids or in a different season of life. As supermoms, we want to do it all, all of the time. However, we have to be realistic with ourselves and honor the space we are in, knowing that seasons change and it won’t always be this way.

Cara’s tips on grace: Know what you want to do and why you want to do it. Communicate that with your children in an age appropriate way that they can understand. Explain what the plan is, for example for younger children, “Mommy is going to take this phone call while you watch TV and then we will go to the park.” ● Know your busy season and call in the reinforcements. Depending on your specific industry, there is likely a specific season when you know you will be busier than other months. Plan for this time by clearly communicating with your spouse that there may be more takeout this month or that you’ll need to hire a babysitter for a few days. Welcome any help or convenience offered to you during your busy season and plan for a period of rest afterward. ●

When you start a business, the business becomes another baby. It is often in our nature as women to feel the need to be great at everything, all of the time. The decision to build a business is a big one. With it, comes the need to build a team that is dedicated to helping you win.

Cara’s tips on asking for help: Accept when help is offered. If your spouse or friend is willing to take your kids for an hour, let them and trust that they’re being well taken care of. If your partner is willing to cook dinner, let them. If your mom wants to take your children to the playground, let her. Whatever help is being offered, welcome it so that you can spend uninterrupted time growing your dream. ● Delegate tasks. Make a list of everything that you need to do then decide what you can have someone else do. You are either going to pay with your time or your money, choose wisely. ● Ask yourself: Is it worth it for me to be doing this right now? ● Trade services with friends. Redonkulous Entertainment By Krystle J. Bailey

edonkulous Entertainment, the first African American comic book company out of Atlantic City, is composed of eight childhood friends with a collective goal: to provide unforgettable entertainment at a global level. From comic books and creative Youtube skits to a clothing line and live events, Redonkulous Entertainment group is always up to something new. Growing up with a shared love of comic books, the members of Redonkulous each bring their unique gifts to the table. The team of eight includes writers, editors, concept artists, and a product marketing team. They are affectionately known by their nicknames, each speaking to their roles within the company. Together, they’ve created a comic universe of their own known as M.A.V.E.N. with titles such as Arrowshot, Bloodmoon, and The Knight-Owl. The Military Advanced Vigilant Elite Network (MAVEN) storyline continued this year with the release of Bloodmoon 3. The release was celebrated with a four-room party at Showboat. The event featured an art gallery, theatre room, kids club, and merchandise space and welcomed 65 comic enthusiasts with over 50 copies sold. Last year, one of the founding members of Redonkulous Entertainment, Kevin “The Co-Founder” Martin, lost his mother to breast cancer, which was the spark for A Redonkulous Reminiscence. The memorial event took place last August amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. With precautions in place, the day paid tribute to Kevin’s mother along with several other lost loved ones. Planning an event during the Summer of 2020 was no

small feat, met with countless naysayers and several speedbumps, the team of eight was determined to see it through to completion. Ultimately, A Redonkulous Reminiscence was a success. “With some things, you just have to step out on faith,” explains Tanya “The First Lady” Fields, marketing manager for RE. The trials and triumph that led to the reminiscence was the inspiration for Redonkulous Entertainment’s next project in the form of a documentary. The film, set to be released on December 9th, features the stories of those celebrated at the reminiscence event and everyone who brought the day to life. The “underdog story,” as Kevin Martin explains it,

will be met with a red carpet event at Tilton 9 movie theatre in Northfield. Paying homage to the city that raised them, the Redonkulous Entertainment production heavily represents Atlantic City and its residents. While we anticipate the release of the RE documentary, we can look forward to The Redonkulously Redonkulous Boat Ride taking place on August 11th. Catch the boat in Gardner’s Basin in Atlantic City for a “redonkulous” party experience. Come out to learn about the brand, network, or just have a little fun. The evening will be DJ’d by 99.3 The Buzz and include a cash bar, music, dancing, and a great time with the Redonkulous team. Tickets are

Schultz-Hill Foundation RISES UP for The ARTS

f you’re looking for inspiration after a challenging year, look no further than the Texas Tenors. Their signature song invites you to “seize the day with no regrets…just find the strength you know you have inside…and Rise.” It’s a mantra that applies not only to the Tenors but to the entire arts community, poised to take to the stage after more than a year away. And the Schultz-Hill Foundation is making it happen. For 18 years, the nonprofit 501(c)3 Schultz-Hill Foundation has supported programs for the arts, history and education in South Jersey. Its annual benefit concert is the primary fundraiser to support a year of arts outreach. This year’s concert features the Texas Tenors who will Rise Up for the Arts on August 6 at Resorts Casino Hotel. The tenors -- Marcus Collins, JC Fisher and John Hagen – are America’s Got Talent champions, three-time Emmy Award winners, and Billboard Magazine’s #10 Classical Crossover Artists in the World. Audiences will enjoy their versatile songbook, which includes Broadway, Americana, opera, country and pop. The proceeds from the concert will go to fund the many programs made possible by the Schultz-Hill

Foundation. In the past, the Foundation has introduced Atlantic City schoolchildren to classical music, with performances by the Bay Atlantic Symphony at Dante Hall. The Foundation brought the soulful sounds of Sinatra and Nat King Cole in free concerts for seniors. It has funded performances of Shirat Hayam’s Number

AtlantiCare’s Healing Arts Program is also supported by the Foundation, bringing artwork from mainly New Jersey-based artists to provide beautiful and serene environments for patients, visitors and staff. ramic art. Most recently, the Foundation initiated a scholarship for summer internships at the Barnes Museum in Philadelphia. Each year, the Schultz-Hill Foundation funds local arts organizations and inspires students and educators with its DINA Awards scholarships and grants. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $150,000 in student scholarships and art/historical grants. As a tribute to the Schultz-Hill Foundation’s arts outreach into the community, the Texas Tenors concert will include a special guest performance by the Holy Spirit High School Choir under the direction of Mrs. Claire Collins. The students will be performing backup for some of the Texas Tenors’ signature songs. Boozy Jam Session Wine Time By Nikki Myers

his week, I’m not giving you all a cocktail recipe. Instead, I’m giving you a cocktail formula: a far more useful thing, despite requiring a dash of one’s own creativity to see it through. Years ago, I became enthralled with using jam in my cocktails. It all started with a blueberry basil jam I made with some overripe berries I had floating around one summer. Sure, I could have put it on toast or pancakes, but ultimately, bourbon seemed like the only right answer. Soon, with a dash of lemon and ginger beer to round things out, I was on the verge of a complete obsession. If you're hesitant about the texture of a jam-based drink, I feel you; jam is chunky and gelatinous. Trust me, friends - I would never, ever try to sell you a chunky or gelatinous cocktail. The jam essentially dissolves when mixed properly with alcohol,

leaving behind only decadent and concentrated flavors. If you're intrigued enough to try this out, read on! Begin by taking 2 tablespoons (give or take) of your jam of choice.( I don't recommend Welch's Grape for this, but you do you!) Some I've loved for jam cocktails in the past are fig, strawberry balsamic, and DiBruno's Orange Grappa. Throw the jam in your favorite glass and decide on the main player - the booze. Any spirit is fair game for this, and I encourage you to try them all. The best starting point is simply with whatever you have on hand. 1-2 ounces of your spirit is Ideal, but play around! (Use less for a more sweet and tame beverage, or more if you want to pack a punch and highlight the flavor of a favorite liquor.) Add your spirit on top of the jam, and stir very well. You want all the stickiness of the jam to dissolve. If there are still pieces of fruit or herbs left behind, don't panic. It'll come

together soon. Fill your cup of jammy goodness with ice, and choose your bubbles. Any soda or tonic will do - even sparkling wine is workable if that's your thing! Add a big splash or two on top of the ice, then stir and sip. At this point, I'll usually decide it needs some citrus or garnish (or both, because I'm notoriously "extra"). A hit of lemon, a sprig of mint, a twist of lime - the world is your oyster. Dress it up, find yourself a good chair on a porch somewhere, and get to sipping.

This recipe is so flexible and versatile, you'll find yourself coming back to it again and again. There is also nothing better than the shocked (yet approving) looks of your friends when they ask for your recipe and you tell them that jam is the key component. few days ago, my daughters and I took a day trip down to Wildwood, and it was awesome! We drove down the parkway and awed at the beautiful greenery and vast marshlands, and then traveled over the bridge onto the island. We usually spend most of our time in Ventnor, Margate and Ocean City, so it was exciting to be at another beach town, with a whole different vibe! We strolled down the boardwalk, and there was so much to do! From shooting games to haunted houses to museums with all kinds of oddities, we were definitely “not in Kansas anymore.” The girls wanted to ride some waterslides, so we spent the afternoon at Morey’s Piers. I sipped a blueberry

shark-tooth necklaces. My daughters and I tried on goofy sunglasses and bucket hats, giggling harder than we have in a while. Down the boardwalk, we spotted the Seaport Aquarium, the perfect place to pet some sharks and stingrays! We gasped at the moray eel, took pictures of the adorable monkey, and smiled when the giant turtle crawled toward us. There was so much to see, all across from the ocean, right on the boardwalk! As the sun went down, we stopped at our family favorite: Scoops Ice Cream Parlor. This 1950’s themed

slushie while my youngest daughter sprinted up the stairs to race down the steepest slide. My oldest daughter relaxed on the hammocks and watched families splash in the pools below. This resort, Ocean Oasis, overlooking the beach was spectacular. After we dried off and soaked up the sun a bit, we headed across the boardwalk and grabbed some dinner. Afterwards we walked the boardwalk, browsed some gift shops, and reminisced about the days when we would get hermit crabs and wear

It was so good! And before we knew it, our Wildwood adventure came to a close. It was wonderful to explore a new part of South Jersey, and celebrate what makes every beach town special. Kosher Salt ● 1 lb. of medium shrimp (about 20) peeled and deveined ● 8 corn , whole grain or gluten free tortillas ● 8 sprigs cilantro for garnish ● 2 limes cut into wedges Heat outdoor grill or stovetop to medium - high heat Mix the olive oil, chipotle or chili powder, and sit in a large bowl. Add the shrimp and toss to coat. Grill the shrimp until translucent, about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes on each side . Grill the tortillas until slightly charred and pliable, about 20 seconds per side. (Alternatively wrap in a damp paper towel and heat in the microwave) Spoon sauce on the tortilla , then top with about 2-3 shrimp and a sprig of cilantro. Serve with lime wedge. How do we stay on a healthy path while enjoying all the wonderful friends and foods summer has to offer? Seems all we can eat when the friends invite us over on a Saturday evening is hot dogs and burgers. No one can lose weight that way or feel the best they can feel after enjoying too much sodium, fat and carbohydrates. By taking the host and/or hostess a gift of a healthy side dish, you will also help yourself stay on track! If you are the one throwing the party, here is a great way to enjoy the festivities and give your guests a delicious and nutritious meal. CHIPOTLE SHRIMP TACO WITH AVOCADO SALSA VERDE Avocado Salsa : ● 1 small onion, quartered ● 1 jalapeño, quartered ● 1 garlic clove, smashed ● 4 medium tomatillos (about 8 oz) husked, rinsed, and coarsely chopped ● 1/2 avocado, peeled, seeded and cut into chunks ● 1 - 1/4 tsp kosher salt ● 1/4 c. Loosely packed cilantro leaves, coarsely chopped Put the onion, garlic, jalapeños in a good processor and finely chop. Add the tomatillos, avocado and salt. Pulse until chopped but still chunky. Transfer to a bowl and stir in cilantro .

Wow…how is it August already? Where does the summer go? Sports & Entertainment By Pete Thompson

’m back home in New Jersey and trying to squeeze every last ounce of fun out of the summer before school begins in September. Since I last wrote, the Eagles have opened training camp and already there’s an injury to a significant player. The Phillies made some moves at the trade deadline, but continue to frustrate. The Sixers signed a freeagent, but missed out on two big names that I think fans wanted. The Flyers got their backup goalie and are now looking toward the upcoming season. On the local front, a Mainland alum signs his first pro baseball contract. Plus, the winner of the “Around the Island Swim” is…..the OCEAN!

From entertainment, a Hollywood movie director with Jersey roots celebrates his birthday by beginning filming on a “legacy” production. Plus, the Jeopardy guest host rotation is winding down. Who are your favorites to become the new host? As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● We’ll start with football as the Eagles are in training camp and already there’s an injury to a significant star. First round draft pick and Heisman Trophy winner DaVonta Smith has a sprained MCL according to reports and the expectation is that he will miss 2-3 weeks because of the injury. The Birds are officially listing him as “week to week," but there’s a chance that he might not play at all in the preseason. ● The Eagles drafted Smith 10th overall with the intention of having him immediately step in as the No. 1 receiver for a group that struggled most of last season. He was in the midst of a mostly positive training camp with a handful of highlights, including a deep touch-

down reception from Jalen Hurts on the second day of camp, so this is definitely disappointing news. However, the bigger injury news might be out of Indianapolis, where former Eagles QB Carson Wentz has had to undergo surgery on his left foot and the Colts say he will miss anywhere from 5-12 weeks. The Eagles received a third-round pick in this year’s draft and a conditional second-round rounder in 2022 that would become a first-round pick if Wentz takes 75% of the Colts’ offensive snaps this season or 70% if they make the playoffs. That seemed a good bet until Wentz got hurt again. If he ends up returning in five weeks, he’d be back right before the start of the season and might not miss any time, but who wants to take that bet? If Wentz has to miss 12 weeks, he wouldn’t be returning until late October and would miss the Colts first seven games. Even with the NFL adding a 17th game this season, it would be next to impossible for Wentz to play 70% of the Colts’

Which brings me to the offensive line and the projected battle between Andre Dillard and Jordan Mailata at left tackle. According to multiple reports, Mailata has clearly been the better player and projects to be the starter. Now, I’m always of the belief that you can’t have enough capable o-line players (just look at last year), but it does trouble me that Dillard is now in his 3rd year in the NFL and losing the battle to the former rugby player turned NFL offensive lineman. On the defensive side of the football, all reports are that the Eagles are deep on the defensive line, and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon has his line playing at a high level already. Less certain is the secondary, which was an issue last year, but Darius Slay returns and newcomer Steven Nelson has NFL experience. Keep in mind, the pads come on this week, and they say that everybody looks good in shorts & helmets! Let’s switch over to the Phillies now as President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski pulled the trigger on a trade or two prior to the deadline. Dombrowski shipped out top prospect Spencer Howard and minor leaguers Kevin Gowdy and Tyler Burch. In

exchange, he got back starter Kyle Gibson and reliever Ian Kennedy from the Rangers. He also picked up shortstop Freddy Galvis from Baltimore and $4 million in cash. On the surface, I like all these moves. Hey, Dombrowski had to do SOMETHING. Scratch a little deeper though, and you’ll notice that the Mets got Javier Baez. The Braves got three solid bats in Jorge Soler, Eddie Rosario and Adam Duvall. So, sure, the Phillies improved, but so did the other two teams fighting for the division lead. Before I forget, I haven’t even mentioned the Dodgers. Los Angeles gets Max Scherzer AND Trea Turner? That almost seems unfair doesn’t it? I mean, even if the Phillies DO win the N.L. East and make the playoffs, do you realistically see them advancing past the divisional round? Hey, maybe I’ll eat my words here as Gibson had a solid debut in Pittsburgh last weekend allowing only two runs in six and two thirds and striking out five. Most impressive is that he threw 113 pitches and recorded seven of his 20 outs on the ground. This is the quality kind of start the Phillies are looking for!

With the addition of Gibson, the starting rotation has been shuffled once again as Ranger Suarez started against Washington on Monday night and Chase Anderson is also in the rotation. Thankfully, Vince Velasquez and Matt Moore are out. The plan was for Suarez to only throw three innings as he transitions from bullpen to starter, and manager Joe Girardi stuck to that plan. The Phillies used six pitchers total, blew two late leads, but ultimately won the ballgame by the score of 7-to-5 over a Nationals team that were sellers at the trade deadline. The Mets lost in Miami, so as I write this, the Phillies are right back at .500 at 53-53 and only two and a half games behind New York. One thing that gives me pause is that Andrew McCutchen has landed on the 10-day injured list with left knee inflammation. After a slow start that had some observers questioning whether he could still be an everyday player, “Cutch” has been on a two-month tear. Beginning with a two-homer game June 1 in Cincinnati, McCutchen is batting .271 and slugging .574 with 13 homers, 37 RBIs, and a .964 OPS in 49 games. He leads the Phillies in homers, RBIs, and

runs (33) during that span. Losing him in the lineup no matter for how long, is definitely a blow. In basketball, the Sixers did NOT trade Ben Simmons on draft night. Reportedly they were asking for a high price tag and no one around the league wanted to pay THAT much for Simmons. On draft night, the Sixers took Tennessee guard Jaden Springer with the 28th overall pick. He’s known mostly for his defense, so it remains to be seen if he can come in and contribute right away. The Sixers also took forward Filip Petrusev in the second round at #50 overall and three spots later picked big man Charles Bassey. The 6-11 native of Nigeria is supposed to have tremendous upside coming out of Western Kentucky. Again, this is all a wait and see situation with the draft picks. But no more waiting as far as free agency goes. Let’s start with the bad. Once again, Villanova’s Kyle Lowry ends up with a team OTHER than the Sixers. This time, he goes to the Miami Heat on a deal worth $80 million over three seasons. He’ll be paired up with former Sixer Jimmy Butler and while I like Lowry, that’s a pretty steep price to pay. The bigger loss, for me, was that backup center Dwight Howard has signed a deal to go back to

the Los Angeles Lakers. I thought Howard was a big part of the team’s defensive identity as the 35-year-old averaged 7.0 points and 8.4 rebounds as Joel Embiid’s backup center. I guess LeBron and now Russell Westbrook meant more to Howard than Embiid and potentially Simmons again. Chalk that one up as a big loss for me. Lastly, the one free agent signing the Sixers did make was guard Furkan Korkmaz as he has agreed to a three-year, $15 million deal to remain with Philadelphia. The Sixers drafted the swingman with the 26th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. He joined the team after spending a year playing for Anadolu Efes and Banvit in his native Turkey. Korkmaz, 24, averaged 9.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and career high 1.5 assists this past season. This will mark the second time he re-signed with the Sixers. He signed a two-year deal with the team on July 26, 2019. So, that leaves us with the Flyers and I promised you I would know the name of the new backup goalie by the time I wrote this week’s col-

umn. It’s 31-year-old Martin Jones, who excelled early in his career in San Jose, but is coming off three straight sub-par seasons. Hopefully a change of scenery does him good, and also he can be a good mentor to Carter Hart. Hart’s ability to bounce back from a down year last year will really be the key to whether or not the Flyers make the playoffs, in my opinion. Statistically, Carter Hart is coming off the worst season by a Flyers goalie (minimum: 25 games) since Tommy Soderstrom in 1993-94. The Flyers defense, with the addition of veterans Ryan Ellis, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Keith Yandle, is clearly the most improved part of the team. The forwards should be more difficult to play against because of the acquisition of Cam Atkinson, a (likely) full season with Wade Allison, and the signing of fourth-line center/penalty-killer Nate Thompson. Atkinson gives them a much-needed shoot-first mentality. Here’s hoping the Fly Guys improve, as the Metro Division remains the toughest in all of hockey…!

On the local front, I just missed writing about Mainland alum Chase Petty last week as he visited Target Field in Minneapolis and signed his first contract with the Twins. Jim Callis from MLB. com reported that the pitcher received a $2.5 million signing bonus. Petty now heads to Ft. Myers, Florida where the Twins have their spring training facility and low-A club. Petty is the third Cape-Atlantic League player to join the Twins organization. Cody Stashak, a 2012 Oakcrest graduate, has pitched out of the bullpen for the Twins and is currently on the 60-day injured list with a back injury. Sean Mooney, a 2016 Ocean City graduate, pitches for the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, the Twins’ Low-A affiliate in Florida. Petty and Mooney both have worked out at the Baseball Performance Center in Pleasantville. I also have to mention the brave souls that took part in the 55th Around the Island Swim last Sunday as part of the Jim Whelan Open Water Festival. I was on hand to watch them take off from the Atlantic City High School boathouse near the Albany Avenue Bridge, and was saddened to learn that no one was able to finish the race. The rules of the 22.75-mile race around Absecon Island called for a 10-hour time limit, and no swimmers in the clockwise race were at the North Jackson Avenue cutoff point at that time. When the race was stopped at 10 hours and 25 minutes, Seth Baetzold, of River Falls, Wisconsin, was in the lead in the intra-coastal waters of Ventnor Heights. Two others from the original 11 individual swimmers, were still going as John Zeigler, of Pennsylvania, and Greg O'Connor, of Massachusetts were still in the water. The race had five relay teams consisting of

two to five swimmers each, and none finished the course either. According to most accounts, the waves in the ocean were really tough, and the currents were not favorable. For perspective, the male winner in 2019 (the last year the race was held) finished in 8 hours and 23 minutes. One thing that was cool is that I had the chance to meet guest starter Marilyn Bell DiLascio, who swam the first Around the Island Swim in 1954 and was the first woman to finish the race. The 5-foot DiLascio, then a Canadian, was 16 at the time. To me, it was great to meet a trailblazer like DiLascio and you couldn’t wipe the smile off her face all weekend! My obligatory Olympic update includes the fact that the U.S. Women’s Soccer team is beaten by Canada. So, no gold for Carli Lloyd in what will probably be her last Olympic games. Japan rallies past the United States in baseball, but as I write this, Simone Biles is scheduled to compete in the individual beam event. Biles has drawn both praise and criticism for not competing so far in Tokyo, but I’d love to see her at least medal in the beam and quiet some of those critics. The 24-year-old withdrew from the women's team final and other individual events to focus on her mental health upon experiencing the "twisties". As I write this, the United States leads the overall medal count with 66, but China is not far behind at 63. As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as Jersey’s own Kevin Smith celebrated his 51st birthday with a table read of the script for “Clerks III," a third installment of the low-budget comedy film that put him on the map as “Silent Bob” back in 1994. "It'll be a movie that concludes a saga," Smith wrote in a recent Instagram

post. "It'll be a movie about how you're never too old to completely change your life. It'll be a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future. It'll be a movie that brings us back to the beginning — a return to the cradle of civilization in the great state of New Jersey.” Hey, sounds good to me! Lastly, actor LeVar Burton has openly campaigned to be the next host of JEOPARDY, but I wasn’t impressed by his guest hosting stint. If I was ranking the folks who have filled in for Alex Trebek so far, I’d put Mike Richards first, Mayim Bialik second and Ken Jennings third. All of them have a reverence for the show and the contestants, and I think Richards would be the best, but I’m not sure the executive

producer of the show has enough “juice” to land the gig. If that’s the case, give it to Bialik who balanced a fun attitude with a good feel for the game. This week David Faber gets a turn, and FOX announcer Joe Buck finishes things out. After that, we’ll see who the folks in charge pick to replace Trebek, which is no easy task. I’ll close with a note about this darn Delta variant and the fact that Covid-19 doesn’t seem to be fully going away. Stay safe, stay healthy, and if a place requires you to wear a mask, it’s for a reason! Above all, just keep being KIND to one another, okay? That would be nice, wouldn’t it? PM no matter how far they are in their hike. Getting caught up there after dark is too dangerous. On Mike’s first attempt to the summit two of his buddies wisely turned back when they reached their physical limit to get back to camp safely. Mike stopped twice feeling that he could not continue, but, unlike his more wise friends who were probably safe at camp by that time, after a short rest he foolishly pushed forward. (I am his wife so I am well within my rights to say such things). He was able to catch up with John, but by 1:00 they were still about one mile from the summit. The foolish side of them was yelling, “Don’t stop now! You’re almost there!” The wise side was advising “Turn around and head back to camp so that you can live to try again.” Wisely, they turned around. To be continued…

hree more weeks left for Mike Devaney to train for his second attempt to hike the north end of the Appalachian Trail to the Mt. Katahdin Summit. He has built his Light House training sessions up to 8 consecutive up and down climbs, at about 15 minutes each. He has also started wearing the water pack that he will need to carry with him on the hike. Mike, along with his usual hiking group, John, Jack, and Ed set the goal of hiking part of every state along the Appalachian Trail back in 2015. Most of the hikes are planned to allow them to pass through more than one state during a two or three day hike; for

Mike, about to climb the lighthouse. example on the 2019 hike they were able to pass through part of Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia all in one hike. So far, they have hiked the three mentioned plus Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Main, where they will again attempt to reach the summit.

On the morning of their first attempt to reach the summit John, Jack, Ed, and Mike were aware of its extra challenges, but confident. Usually, a hiker travels straight through to a pre chosen stopping point where they set up camp for the night and then pack up again in the morning to continue along the trail. Everything that one might possibly need for sustenance and shelter must be carried on the back of the hiker (there are no WaWas’ on the Appalachian Trail). The Katahdin part of the trail is different. There is no possibility of setting up camp anywhere along the way because of the steep angle and rocky terrain of the climb. A camp is set up near the start of the hike and hikers attempt the 10.4 mile round trip carrying only what they need to get them up and back to camp; as much water as one can carry and protein snacks are a must. Though these Appalachian hikes facilitate a group quest, every hike also holds a very personal quality for each one of the group. Because Mike and his friends are all over 65 years old and in varying degrees of fitness and health, they have agreed that the extra challenges and risks along this end portion of the trail make this a

now or never attempt at the summit. No one wants to be the one to slow the others down so they decided to approach this hike with a “meet you at the top” attitude. On the Katahdin all hikers are required to turn back to camp by 1:00

very year The Atlantic City Arts Foundation sponsors a series of summer activities called 48 Blocks Atlantic City. In the past their 48 Blocks activities and events have included jitney tours of AC’s murals, outdoor theater, dance and more. Last year, because of the pandemic, The 48 Blocks AC activities were all online. This year the celebration of art in Atlantic City will take place in person in Atlantic City’s O’Donnell Park. Located at 2 S. Hartford Avenue, O’Donnell park is a perfect place to take the family to enjoy all of the arts projects happening all day. I personally invite you to join me at 1pm for The Deep Dope Soul Atlantic City Summer Cultural Celebration which is a 120 minute art festival within 48 Blocks. I am curating the 1pm to 3pm portion of 48 Blocks AC with a tribute to former radio station WUSS. We will have live DJ’s including DJ Dramatik. Also providing sound will be DJ Bowe of The Soul Revival on FM 91.7 WLFR. Artist Yelixza Figueroa will be painting live. Recording artist and Charter Tech grad Tashie will be bringing us her soulful music. Spontaneous artists can stop by our open canvas and leave a sketch. Each part of this celebration is exciting to me but I am very thrilled to announce that award winning painter Chanelle René (www.ChanelleRen. com) will be leading a community

paint project for us during the 1pm to 3pm hour. If you ever wanted to paint a masterpiece? Chanelle René will be helping all who attend contribute to a large painting. Value of a Funeral Service, Part 6

n my last few columns, I explained several benefits of holding a funeral service. One I would like to highlight this week is how the service gives people a chance to reaffirm one’s relationship with the person who died. As a funeral director I have seen and heard some very sad stories in regards to familial relationships. You have heard the phrase “you can pick your friends but not your family”. That can ring very true sometimes as I have had many an estranged son, daughter, mother, father, brother, sister, etc. People who should love and cherish one another but for one reason or another have written that person or persons out of their lives. Then a death occurs and that estranged family member gets the opportu-

nity to come and make peace with their loved one. I have been there first hand and seen how powerful and important that chance is. A son who has not seen his mother for over 20 years or a father who has not seen his daughter for over 30 years, it allows for closure to a wounded heart and is incredibly psychologically beneficial. Lastly, a funeral service provides a time to honor the person’s life and to say good-bye. You probably have heard the phrase “I only see all of these people at weddings and funerals” and there is some truth to that statement. Most people still feel that it is important to honor a person when they die. Therefore you usually see many people from a person’s past come to pay their respects. This is a good thing because it reaffirms to the survivors the impact their loved one made in the community during his/her life. Nothing makes me happier than when we have a crowd of people coming for a funeral service because I know it speaks volumes to the family about their loved ones character. Many of my family members have told me afterwards that they met their

mother's childhood friend or their fathers Navy buddy and that they heard so many stories that they had no idea about. All of these experiences that take place during a funeral service help the survivors feel a sense of warm pride and peaceful closure. So with all those reasons and benefits of having a funeral service you think that everybody has a service for their loved one right? Unfortunately, in today’s day and age there has been a “devaluing of funerals and the traditions that surround them. When a loved one dies, the first reaction for many people is to want to get things over with as quickly as possible. They mistakenly believe that not having a funeral will shelter themselves and their family from more pain. According to Dr. Robert Fulton Sociology professor at the University of Minnesota “When we compared respondents who had less than a traditional funeral, i.e. those who did not view the body or had arranged for immediate disposition of the remains we found that those who had requested no viewing and/or immediate disposition of the body reported experiencing

the greatest hostility following the death, the greatest increase in the consumption of alcohol, tranquilizers, and sedatives, the greatest increase in tension and anxiety, the lowest positive recall of the deceased and in general, particularly among male respondents, greater problems in adjustment to the death.” Dr. J. William Worden of the Harvard Medical School states “The funeral service, if done well, can be an important adjunct in aiding and abetting the healthy resolution of grief…Seeing the body of the deceased person helps bring home the reality and finality of death.” “Even in cremation, the body can still be present at the funeral services in either an open or closed casket and then the cremation done after the service.” “In this way, the funeral service can be a strong asset in helping the survivors work through the first task of grief.” Andrew B. Ronnies Golf Hospital Sheriff Scheffler Promotes Two Officers Pro Shop & Driving Range

heriff Eric Scheffler has announced the promotions of two of his officers. On Monday, August 4, 2021, Sergeant Jeffery Newman was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and Officer Drew Eckert was promoted to the rank of sergeant. Scheffler continued by saying the promotions were as a result of the recent retirement of Lt William Ade.

Lt. Newman began is career with the Sheriff’s Office in January 2006 and was assigned to the Courts and Transportation Unit. In May of 2008 he was reassigned to the Fugitive Warrants Unit as a detective and

was promoted to Detective Sergeant in May of 2008. Prior to his career at the Sheriff’s Office Lt. Newman served as a corrections officer for 10 months. Newman resides in Egg Harbor Township with his wife and two daughters. Sgt. Eckert was born and raised in South Jersey and began his career at the Sheriff’s Office in 2014 and served his first two years at the Civil Courthouse in Atlantic City. In 2016 he was subsequently assigned the Mays Landing Courts and Transportation Unit until 2019 when he was transferred to the Community Policing Division. Eckert lives with his wife in Mullica Township and the two are expecting their first child in August of this year. Sheriff Scheffler had nothing but praise for the two officers. He stated, “both officers come to work each day with a positive attitude and do nothing but provide quality service to our agency, the County, and citizens we serve.” Scheffler stated he could not be happier to have them as part of his management team.

What’s even cooler is that you can leave the shoes behind. No sneakers required and believe you me, your feet will thank you. Sylvester Stallone (aka Rocky Balboa) trained by running on the beach. You can too. If you’re new to beach running, run closer to the water where the sand is wet and more compact for stable footing. Walking on the beach is also great for balance and stability if you’re not interested in running. Beach walking or running is good for the mind, body and soul. It also keeps stress at bay and gives you a healthy dose of Vitamin D. There are many exercises you can do on the beach Bear crawls on the beach provide a great sensory experience. Dig your hands and feet in the sand and walk along like a bear for a full body workout. Mountain climbers, crab walks, push-ups, planks, sit-ups and "Superman’s" are even more challenging on the sand. These exercises will definitely get your heart pumping and you a little bit dirty, but that can be easily remedied with a quick dip in the ocean or bay. Since the water is right there, why not go for a swim? Swimming is a low-impact, full-body exercise and the perfect way to sneak in some fitness at the beach. It’s probably the best way to exercise. It’s a wonderful cardiovascular workout and easy on the joints. Another one of my all time favorite summer activities is Paddle boarding. This form of exercise is the ticket if your goal is trying something new, getting a great core and giving yourself the freedom and grace to be new at something. I can tell you

from experience that falls happen until you get the hang of it and when you do, you will feel so accomplished. The added feeling of peace and tranquillity is what makes this exercise so different. Being out on the bay or ocean gives a sense of calm. Paddle boarding burns calories and improves balance. It also works your abs, arms, trunk, and legs. Go ahead and give it a try. If you lose your balance just try again and again. Remember it’s all about progress, not perfection. Take the stairs. Lots of beaches have stairs, get in a few flights to ramp up your routine. Take the stairs two at a time for an extra challenge. No stairs? Try lunges or squats instead. These can be extra challenging in softer sand. How about an empty bench by the stairs to the beach for split squats, dips, incline or decline push-ups. The possibilities are endless. If you want to make it happen while on vacation, you will and your creative juices will be flowing if you’re at the beach or lake without a gym or fitness center in sight. Making up your own circuit while using the beach sounds and scenery as a backdrop for your personalized circuit. Choose 5 to 7 body weight exercises and add in some cardio. Here are some ideas: jumping jacks, planks, squats, sprints, high leg lifts, triceps dips, and mountain climbers. Mix it up to keep it fresh so you stay motivated to keep moving. Ask a friend or family member to join you. Partner workouts are always great to keep you engaged and motivated. Another great idea while being playful and having fun is exercising with a group. Ask friends and family to join you in a game of Frisbee, catch or badminton. Adding that group element makes working out twice as fun. You’ll enjoy some camaraderie and, of course, a little friendly competition. Win or lose the game you’re still a winner at staying committed to your fitness goals while on vacation!
