Poetry in the Park to take place in Somers Point

W

hat could be better than an early summer evening in the serene park overlooking Great Egg Harbor Bay and listening to the spoken words of local poets, the guitar music of Marc Wasserman and the opportunity to read your own poem at the open mic segment?

Well, the Somers Point Arts Commission invites the public to experience just that scenario at Poetry in the Park, an evening of Spoken Words at JF Kennedy Park on Broadway in Somers Point on August 1 from 6-7:30pm.

This summer evening event in the park is the setting for the 2nd Poetry in the Park presentation by the Somers Point Arts Commission that features local presenting poets readings from their original published works including Erin Castaldi, Somers Point’s poet laureate, Marya Parral, Toni Libro, Richard Russell, John Sweeder, Aubrey Rahab Hiers and Christine Cote’. These poets will be representing Beach Bards, South Jersey Writers and other South Jersey writing organizations and will be promoting their

individual or organization’s publications.

A special tribute reading to Stephen Dunn, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, who recently passed away on his 82 birthday, June 24th will be presented by Maxine Patroni, a former student of Dunn’s.

Dunn is well-known and respected in South Jersey through his time as a faculty member starting in 1974 at Stockton State College, now University, Dunn published more than 20 volumes of poetry including Local Visitations, a collection of poems that included long-dead writers visiting South Jersey towns, e.g. “Jane Austen in Egg Harbor”, and “Twain in Atlantic City”.

In addition to the presenting poets, Somers Point students who have won the 8th grade poetry competitions will present their work; there will be an open mic segment where audience members have the opportunity to sign up to read one original poem.

The Next Time a Derecho Heads Our Way…Your Cell Phone Will Tell You

W

hen Tropical Storm Elsa zipped up the East Coast early in July and spawned a few tornadoes in South Jersey in the middle of the night, your cell phone may have woken you up from a sound sleep to alert you. But when the great derecho of 2012 swept through and left a widespread path of destruction, your phone likely stayed silent. But that's about to change.

Effective August 2nd, the National Weather Service is adding some severe thunderstorm warnings to its wireless emergency alert system, by adding a damage threat tag to these warnings to better convey the severity and potential impacts of these types of storms.

Since around 2012, when the National Weather Service issues tornado and flash flood warnings (among others) for any area, an emergency alert alarm and message are automatically triggered on all cell phones within the warning area. The alarm is loud and effective, and the information provid-

ed in the message can be crucial to protecting life and property ahead of impending damaging and potentially deadly weather. And since just about every household has at least one cell phone, these severe weather alerts are probably the most effective tool in the arsenal to reach the most number of people ahead of destructive storms.

It's especially effective at night, a time when most of us are sleeping and those that are awake may not be tuned into weather coverage where these warnings are conveyed. Of course, that was one of the issues during our June 2012 derecho, the time that it struck.

But until now, severe thunderstorm warnings did not automatically trigger these alerts. Why? Well first, they are issued much more frequently than tornado and flash flood warnings.

Therefore, meteorologists wanted to prevent warning fatigue, users getting tired of constant alerts on their phones to the point where they may try to deactivate the service that most cell phones are automatically enrolled in.

Second, many severe thunderstorms are not as destructive or life-threatening compared to more tornadoes or

flash flooding. But notice the adjective choice "many", and not "all." Yes, there are exceptions, and very notable ones if that.

With this new classification system, severe thunderstorms will now fall into three categories: ● "Baseline" severe thunderstorm (no mobile alert triggered): Winds greater than 58mph and hail up to 1" in diameter (quarter-sized) ● "Considerable" damage threat (no mobile alert triggered): Winds greater than 70mph and hail up to 1.75" in diameter (golf ball-sized) ● "Destructive" damage threat: Winds greater than 80mph and hail up to 2.75" in diameter (baseball-sized) While the first two can be damaging, meteorologists feel the third has the most potential to be destructive and even deadly. So emergency alerts on cell phones will only be triggered when that last set of criteria is met.

The derecho in June of 2012 would certainly have qualified, and potentially lifesaving alarms will now sound in advance of any future derechos. Given how rare that powerful a storm is in South Jersey, we can thankfully not expect to lose too much sleep in the coming nights.

Nationally however, it's a different story. According to the National Weather Service, 13 of the 22 costliest weather disasters in 2020 were severe thunderstorms. In most of these cases, the new "destructive" tag would have been activated, and more residents would have been warned in a more timely fashion.

I've actually written about the need for something like this in past columns (although I suggested an "extremely severe thunderstorm warning" in my lobbying), and talked about it within the meteorology community since our June 2012 derecho made me aware that improvements to warnings were needed. To that effect, the National Weather Service has been steadily working towards more effective and impact-based warnings for years.

Changes to the hurricane warning process and the addition of storm surge warnings in advance of tropical systems was another huge step taken to this effect within the last decade.

Hopefully, these latest changes are just as effective, and can save property but more importantly save lives when severe thunderstorms strike. After all, zero loss of life from any weather event is a shared goal for all of us.

For the record, wireless emergency alerts are also sent for dust storms and tsunamis, but more so in other parts of the world as those are two types of weather phenomena we are not that likely to see here at the Jersey shore. But if a tsunami warning were to ever be issued, your cell phone should alert you. For snow lovers, there is also talk of adding snow squalls to the list of alerted events as well. Snow squalls are after all winter's version of severe thunderstorms, and the whiteout conditions they produce can come up on you quickly and can produce hazardous and sometimes deadly travel.

Think of it as just one more thing your cell phone can do for you.

On Island Time with Piña Colada Jell-O Shots

ast weekend, I visited The Sandbar Village in Avalon on what had to be the most perfect beach day. I ordered a frozen piña colada from the bar and enjoyed the sounds of live music while sipping on my cock tail and settling in for an afternoon of people watching.

As I enjoyed my drink I thought to myself, is there anything more summer than a piña colada?

Piña Coladas are a tropical-inspired cocktail featuring rum, cream of coconut or coconut milk, and pineapple juice. The ingredients are

blended together with ice to create a creamy, frothy frozen drink that is best enjoyed on a warm and sunny summer day.

The perfect piña colada served as inspiration for these piña colada jell-o shots. If you have never had a jell-o shot, they are simply an edible shot made from jell-o and alcohol. They are very easy to make, a crowd favorite and with so many varieties of jell-o, you can cus-

tomize them with colors and flavors.

For this week’s recipe, I channeled my love for piña coladas and whipped up a fun batch of piña colada jell-o shots.

Piña Colada Jello-Shots

Prep Time: 4 hours | Serves 12 Ingredients ● 12 (2 oz) plastic jello shot cups ● 1 (3 oz) box JELL-O island pineapple gelatin ● 1 cup pineapple juice ● 1 cup Malibu Rum - chilled

Chill overnight or for at least 4 hours. Once the gelatin has set, you can place lids on the cups.

Optional: Chill the shots until firm and then garnish right before serving. Before serving, add a fresh pineapple wedge and maraschino cherry to each cup.

Do not allow the juice to boil. Remove from heat. ● Open the pineapple gelatin box and pour the contents into a medium mixing bowl. Pour the hot pineapple juice into the bowl with the powdered gelatin and whisk until dissolved. ● Add the cold Malibu rum and stir well. ● Pour the gelatin mixture into the jello shot cups, filling almost up to ●

TIPS: Chilling the pineapple juice and liquor before adding to the gelatin helps the jello set better and faster.

Jell-O shots are a fun addition to your next gathering, outdoor barbecue or summer get together. They travel well, are the perfect party starter and are hard to resist. “If you like piña coladas…,” you will love these piña colada jell-o shots.

In a tradition dating back to 1929, Ocean City chooses a Queen Infanta to preside over the annual Baby Parade. Queen Infanta candidates are judged on their school and commu-

nity involvement. The contest is open to young women with a connection to Ocean City who are currently in high school or members of the Class of 2021.

South Jersey Representation in Pop Culture

et’s consider the geographic layout of our neck of the woods. We have Philadelphia, home of cheesesteaks and Eagles fans. Then, we have the Jersey suburbs of Philly, like Cherry Hill, Camden and Collingswood.

The Pinelands lay between those towns and the Jersey Shore. And we all know the Jersey Shore is more than big hair and partying. How is the Jersey Shore represented in pop culture? Here are a few examples: Silver Linings Playbook (Book and Movie) The story surrounds Pat Peoples, a mentally ill man who falls in love with Tiffany, another person struggling with loss and trauma. After leaving a mental health facility, Pat moves back in with his parents in Collingswood.

He and his friends visit Ocean City.

The author Matthew Quick describes

the Ninth Street Bridge, the Wonderland Ferris Wheel, and spending time on the beach. Pat, as he reintegrates into normal life, celebrates his identity as a South Jersey resident (watching Eagles games, visiting Philadelphia, and eating cheesesteaks).

The Wonder Years (Heavy Metal Band) The alternative, heavy metal band has roots in Philadelphia, but the lead singer has fond memories of spending summers in Ocean City.

In fact, the band has a song, “I don’t know who I was then,” that recounts an experience the lead singer had at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point. The Wonder Years describe their sound as perfect for “a kid from the suburbs with a whole lot of feelings.”

Boardwalk Empire (Television Show) The HBO series is set primarily in Atlantic City, and follows Nucky Johnson, the mayor-gangster who orchestrates various schemes during the Prohibition Era. The show features characters such as the sheriff of Atlantic County and other gangsters

from Atlantic City and beyond. The show was nominated for 57 Emmy awards, winning 20. Watch this suspenseful show to learn more about the rich history of Atlantic City and the cultural seed that bloomed into our home today.

Grace starred in “High Noon,” an Alfred Hitchcock film that won four Academy Awards. She also acted in the following films: “The Bridge to Toko-Ri”, “Rear Window,” “The Country Girl,” and “Rear Fire.”

Kelly passed away in 1982, after earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Teepee on the Beach: OC Resident’s Creation Brings Delight

or the past two years, Sue McElwee has been making heartwarming beachfront displays. A mother of four, McElwee began the tradition of placing a Christmas tree on North Street Beach. Last year, at the height of the pandemic, the tree was carefully decorated in ornaments, tinsel, and surrounded by messages of hope, love and prayer, written on clam shells.

What started as something small grew even larger. The marvelous display made national headlines. After the holiday season, the tree was taken down and donated to Funny Farm Animal Rescue. This was replaced by a giant peace sign and other creations shaped entirely from clam shells. Ad-

ditionally, in June, the same shells were used to form a congratulatory sign for the Ocean City High School graduates.

In recent weeks, beachgoers spotted another display. A beach teepee was placed at the sandy entrance to the beach at the top of Morningside Road.

The beach teepee is made from bamboo. To set it up, McElwee takes three base pieces, wraps them on the ground, stands them up and wraps the remaining pieces together at the top. The entire set up only took 20 minutes, according to McElwee. “I determined the length of it by how long the inside of my car was so I could fit the bamboo in there.” In years past, the teepee was placed at North Street beach.

However, because of a new snow fence that was recently installed on North Street, the teepee was moved to Morningside Road.

This yearly tradition that began three years ago, McElwee says was inspired by a picture of a similar teepee on Instagram. The teepee on North Street was created as a place

for kids to hang out and take photos.

“I thought it would be fun to bring it to our beach," shared McElwee. "The teepee was created for fun."

The teepee also honors the lives of two very special young girls, Charlotte and Annie, both of whom were born with many health challenges.

The story stuck with McElwee. “If there was any way I could do something to give the family and friends of those girls a little glimmer of life, I definitely want to continue to do that.”

However, last week, during Night in Venice, the beach teepee was taken from its location on Morningside Road. The news was shared on social media the following Sunday with a simple message asking for its return. While it is unknown exactly how it happened, the community is rallying behind Sue McElwee in her effort to make our part of the world a better place for all. McElwee’s delightful and magnificent displays continue to touch the hearts of many individuals that visit the North End of Ocean City.

He'll hate it because he'll never have a best friend like Paul again. And he'll never have a great sitter like Rachel again. And he'll never again have his soccer team or his carpool or kids who know him or…Anyway, he can't bear to leave the people and places

Seafindings & Essence Seafindings came to life when Elyssa Glenn was walking along the back bay’s “Sea Glass Beach”. She wanted to give her business a name that best described the inspiration for her craft: making beach and nature inspired jewelry. Seafindings has been at Stainton’s since it opened in 2012.

You can find Elyssa and Seafindings at arts and crafts shows from Ocean City to Cape May each Spring through Fall, and every Wednesday at the Ocean City Farmer’s Market from June to September. From November to January Seafindings is a part of the Made in Philadelphia Holiday Market in Dilworth Park. Stainton’s has been a great location for all of Seafindings’

customers year round who are unable to get out to shows, as well as those new to the shop.

Essence is a new extension, a collaboration with Elyssa’s lifelong friend Barbara Matthews. Essence was born out of two friends being inspired by nature’s wonderful gifts.

Both Elyssa and Barbara have a passion for plants, crystals, and cocktails.

Updating Your Life's GPS Jeff's Journal

F

rom the day we are born until we take our last breath, we are all in the process of learning. I know that for most of us, our schooling officially ends with high school, college, or graduate school. However, the reality is that every day we continue to learn whether we are conscious of it or not.

Then it hit me. I had never updated my GPS software. The information was available to me, but I had failed to access and take advantage of the updated information.

In the case of the GPS, the company website gave instructions on where to go to download updated software. Of course, however, they wanted you to make an "investment.”

There was a cost involved.

Much like my GPS mishap, we all need to know where to go to get the information we need to adjust our life journey. Personally, I find that information by reading the Bible along

essential to success in just about every area of life. However, just as today our phone GPS reminds us when we get off course, every so often we have to listen to the voice inside that tells us to recalculate.

So how do you know if you're off course? If your inner GPS is just sitting around collecting metaphorical dust, I guess you'll never know. The point is, you have to be headed somewhere and taking advantage of the GPS to know if you need a course adjustment. My advice is to get up, get your life in gear and start moving in a

direction. Once you start down life’s highway, you'll know soon enough if you're in need of a recalculation.

Spindrift Pottery I remember back in the day, my wife and I bought a GPS for our family car. I was fascinated by the fact that I could key in a destination and within minutes my GPS could tell me not only the best route to take to get where I wanted to go, but also when I would arrive down to the minute. It was always spot on. The funny thing is as a year or two passed, I realized that some of the destinations or information I gave the GPS turned up as "not found." Other times, I'd be sent down roads that no longer existed.

Susan Van Duyne-Hunter took her passion for art and made not only a career and a hobby from it, but a business as well. Spindrift Pottery, a mainstay at Stainton’s since its opening in 2012, came from Sue’s love of pottery making. Her talent was honed and encouraged by a great mentor and teacher she met while attending Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Sue is the Executive Director of the Ventnor Cultural Arts Center and a pottery teacher as well. If she were no longer director of the center, Sue says she would love to spend even more time teaching pottery there.

Spindrift Pottery features a wide range of items for the home. Sue is particularly fond of the wave mugs she creates, and customers seem to love those as well. Sue has mugs in several other styles, all of which are unique since they are all handmade.

You can find small dishes and bowls, cups, vases, and magnets there too. You can even find the prettiest little miniature vases. Some might think that all of this handmade pottery is too delicate for everyday use, but it is all microwave and

dishwasher safe (it’s lead-free, too)!

It is actually meant for daily use!

Aside from the undeniable quality and beauty of her items, the fact that they are handmade locally is something that really stands out about Spindrift Pottery. Another important trait: Sue shares the shop with her husband Clint, who is also a professional artist and pottery maker. Since each of their pieces is signed by the artist, you’ll be able to tell who made each one. It’s not hard to see that much of Sue’s inspiration comes from nature and the world around us, particularly the beaches and ocean.

Sue is a native of South Jersey. She was raised in Ventnor, where she and Clint now live with their “spoiled rotten” cat.

120 Years of the Ocean City Baby Parade

A Look Back at Ocean City

he Ocean City Baby Parade can be traced back to August 10, 1901, and Ocean City's first Baby Show. Frank E. Darby and John Glaspell decided that what was missing in Ocean City was a way to showcase the many beautiful babies who lived or summered here.

Since Glaspell managed the Casino Pier on the boardwalk, the men decided the pier would be the perfect place to hold Ocean City's first Baby Show.

Forty-six babies entered making the show a great success. Gold medals were presented to the prettiest, cutest, and fattest baby. According to the Ocean City Daily Reporter, it was "the greatest attraction that has yet been provided for summer visitors."

With its slogan of "America's Greatest Family Resort" and world-famous boarddwalk as the venue, Ocean City is the perfect place for a baby parade.

The 111th annual Ocean City Baby Parade will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2021. The march will begin at 10 a.m. at 6th Street and the Boardwalk.

Music Pier Shows Feature Elvis Presley Hits and Straight No Chaser

lvis Presley’s hits will roar to life on the Ocean City Music Pier stage on Friday and Saturday in the new Broadway musical comedy “All Shook Up,” starring Ocean City Theatre Company’s High School Jr Company.

This madcap musical comedy based on Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” plays July 30 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. and overflows with rock, gospel, romance and mistaken identities.

The musical tells the story of a small-town girl with big dreams and the motorcycle-riding roustabout she falls for. Politics: A Practice of Peace?

W

e all know the saying, “You shouldn’t talk about politics, religion, or money.”

And judging by the way our discourse often devolves when these topics arise, it seems like a perfectly reasonable assumption.

Except that, oftentimes, it’s wrong. Sure, getting into heated political or religious debates with strangers isn’t an advisable way to spend your precious time. But as a society hoping to function well, discussing and dissecting the complicated issues that arise in such large and diverse groups is incredibly important. And learning how to do those very things with curiosity, compassion, and courage can be our pathway to a more powerful, more peaceful society.

What is politics? Contrary to how we often experience it today (power grabs, toxic tribalism, etc.) its origins are actually a much more civil, centering approach to creating and maintaining a healthy, functioning society.

At its simplest, politics is the way that people living in groups make decisions. It’s the agreements we make, so that they can peacefully coexist in a shared space. A solutions based, synergistic attempt to, as Bernard Crick put it, “resolve differences, conciliate diverse interests and values, and to make public policies in the pursuit of common purposes.”

Sound familiar? Not really. Or at least not recently. But it should.

And it CAN. There’s nothing that stops us as individuals, a community, or a country, from holding ourselves to a higher standard of communication. From injecting more honesty, integrity, and compassion into our daily discourse, offering us all a chance to better be seen, heard, and understood.

And as it turns out, religion, money, race, etc., are important factors in those conversations.

Listening to and understanding the needs, wants, and ideas of others, even if we don’t understand or

agree, is paramount to producing the fairest, most fruitful outcomes possible.

It’s not whether we should talk about these things that’s the issue.

The more we know and understand about our problems, the better we are at addressing them. And just like in the physical body, remaining ignorant about the things that ail us only allows them to fester, infect, and ultimately become fatal.

It’s how we talk about them that’s important, and where we so often go astray. Which is why I like to use and offer curiosity, compassion, and courage as useful guideposts on our road to wellness.

Coming together around shared values such as these, and utilizing them as touchtones in how we communicate, opens us up to more possibility and progress. And while variations in cultures, preferences, or personalities can and will create conflict, it helps to remember that such conflict is not only inevitable, but necessary for our best ideas, individuals, and institutions to flourish.

It’s only when we lose sight of the initial intention in addressing these conflicts (acknowledge and resolve differences, in the pursuit of common purposes) that things begin to sour. When we’re no longer striving together, towards “a more perfect union”, and instead falling back down into our primitive, fear based factions, our politics become more about war, and less about wellness.

So today I’d like to simply offer this up as a “reframe” of sorts. To remind us that politics is not necessarily the “dog eat dog” power grab that we’re told, and sold, but actually the practice of peace. It’s the conscious, courageous effort to connect, collaborate, and coexist with one another, and from there, create the world we want to live in.

he one thing we all share is the fact that we cook and we eat. While what we eat is extremely important to our overall health, the cookware used to prepare the food may have a nutritional impact as well. I sat down with Shore Medical Center Outpatient Nutrition Counseling Dietitian Mackenzie McCune, RD to learn more.

Cast Iron Skillets

Cast iron skillets are a favorite of many cooks and a must-have according to many food bloggers. But aside from cast iron being an ideal heat conductor that heats evenly, the skillet will last a lifetime. When well-seasoned, a cast iron pan will be stick-resistant and require no additional oil.

McCune, says that cooking in cast iron pans adds iron to food. "Eggs

McCune weighed in on the use of Teflon pans and the concerns that the product releases toxins. They have been around for decades, but a newer formula for Teflon was introduced in 2013. McCune explained, "The Teflon coating found on nonstick cookware is typically harmless until it reaches very high temperatures. At extremely high temperatures of 500°F, Teflon will begin to break down, releasing toxic chemicals. It is important to note this is only when it is cooked at very high temperatures, so ways to prevent this is cooking on low or medium heat and not heating your empty pan before cooking. Doing this will prevent the pan from reaching 500 degrees or higher.

She suggested the following alternatives to Teflon coated cookware: ● Stainless steel ● Cast iron cookware ● Stoneware

Copper Pans

While McCune admits that copper pans are probably the most aesthetically pleasing, she does not recommend cooking on it, even though it heats up quickly and evenly. "The main reason is because of leaching concerns – even though copper is usually lined, the lining will break down over time. Excessive intake of copper will cause a huge imbalance in the copper-zinc ratio needed for almost every system in the body. This imbalance can also cause acne, depression, eczema, headaches, and poor immune function."

The actual copper pans are different from the "copper-infused ceramic" cookware advertised on television.

The copper-infused ceramic does not leach copper into the food.

Aluminum pans

Most people have at least a few pieces of cookware made of aluminum, including cookie sheets, pots and pans. Many are made with anodized aluminum, which is supposed to give them a natural nonstick finish. From a dietitian's perspective, is that a good thing or a bad thing? McCune recommended the anodized aluminum and added some advice for bakers. "I would suggest using parchment paper for baking. It allows even cooking and saves time on clean up," said McCune.

Air Fryer

The air fryer is very popular in the kitchen but is it a healthier cooking method? McCune advised, "Cooking in an air fryer helps keep food low in fat

and calories yet also delicious, which makes them a healthy alternative to fried food. Air frying is also an easy way to roast some very healthy and tasty veggies such as Brussels sprouts."

The Multicooker

The new and popular combination cooking appliances, like the Ninja™ Foodi™ or the InstantPot, can be a pressure cooker, air fryer, and dehydrator all-in-one, but do they retain the nutritional value of the food? Addressing the dehydrating function, McCune cautioned to be mindful of the sugar amount in the dehydrated foods.

"The dehydrating process retains a food's original nutritional value. For example, apple chips will have the same amount of calories, fiber, sugar, etc., as the fresh fruit. However, because dried food loses its water content, it's usually smaller in size. Keep your portions of dehydrated foods smaller than what's recommended for the food in its natural form to avoid overeating. I would recommend no more than ¼ cup dehydrated fruit."

A La Mode, Serving Up Sweetness With Science and A Smile

t’s 8pm on a Monday night.

Fireflies flash as the crowds line up for a treat to beat the heat - homemade ice cream. Vacationers come from far and wide to walk only blocks away to get scoops from A La Mode, the ice cream capital of Ocean City.

Carolyn Logan, the ice cream shop manager, stands across from the ice cream machines and explains the process. “It’s more than just ice cream,” she says. “It’s science.”

Logan attended the Penn State ice cream making course, where the big-wigs of the ice cream industry learned the craft. She sat amongst representatives from Ben & Jerry’s, Safeway, Bryer and more. “This is the Harvard of ice cream education,” Lo-

gan said. “And we apply the principles here in Ocean City.”

A La Mode ice cream is farm to table. Batches are made twice per day and stirred by hand. Toppings, such as wet walnuts, brownies and cookies are made in-shop. Logan shares that most ice cream sits in freezers for months, but at A La Mode, you’ll be licking ice cream less than two weeks old.

This artisan ice cream parlor is owned by Ginny Verrechia, a former nun dedicated to teaching young people about hard work and diligence, and cares deeply for the well-being of her community. Employees love the establishment so much that former young workers send their now-almost-grown children to work at the ice cream shop, keeping artisan desserts in the family for generations.

Because the ice cream is made twice per day, employees can get creative with flavors. Logan shares that customers come with a specific sweet in mind - usually something a little different. Coconut ice cream has been a big hit, and the inclusion of chocolate chips draws quite the

crowd. They’ve made lemon ice cream, cantaloupe ice cream, and mixtures with all kinds of peanut butter and cookie dough.

Last week, the shop held their first annual “Christmas in July” event.

Santa was decked out in sunglasses, riding his bike to greet children and

serve ice cream. A new flavor was created: Hollyberry. It’s mint with oreo cookies and red M and Ms. Frozen hot chocolate was dished out, too. Guests stood under decorated trees and enjoyed the spontaneous celebration, which Logan hopes will continue on as a tradition in the coming years.

Even when unprecedented times struck, A La Mode adapted to meet the needs of the neighborhood. The shop sold sundae kits, so families could make their own creations in the safety of their own homes. They gave to the local food pantry every week to bring smiles and nourishment to the hungry. Although the dining room isn’t open yet, guests can enjoy cones to take out and walk under the sunshine.

“We are thrilled when people support local businesses, because when businesses thrive, so does the community,” said Logan.

tlantic City has no shortage of outstanding people who love the people (of Atlantic City) and the city itself. The last 12 months have however, taken from us, several people without whom Atlantic City would not be the place I know and love.

On August 7th, Ralph Hunter and The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey will celebrate the lives of 4 bright lights that went out this year.

The catered event will include a slide show of the honorees with comments offered by a family member. Artwork by Mr. Croudy will be shown along with selected pieces of art from the estate of Mr. Davis.

Pattie Harris will always be remembered as a dance and entertainment icon in Atlantic City. Personally, I remember Ms. Harris was one of the biggest names that encouraged my journey. Even before I met her, I knew I wanted to impact and inspire people with my art like she did with her craft of dance and theater. Since meeting her, I got the opportunity to work with Miss Harris at The Diabetes Telethon and on the boardwalk with her Incubator for Young Talent (which I hope I can

Earl Harvey was the older brother I never had.

I wish I would have told him more often how much his friendship meant to me. Harvey’s contributions to media in AC and Philadelphia are historic. At some point we (the people of color in Atlantic City and our allies) must try and continue his fight for the Black Press. I admit that months after Harvey’s passing, I am still in shock. Harvey published The AC Times and made sure people of color had a voice. Hopefully Saturday

Chicken Bone Beach Jazz Institute Opens

ozens gathered on North Indiana Avenue in Atlantic City this weekend for the grand opening of the Chicken Bone Beach Youth Jazz Institute. The brightly colored house, located near the corner of Grant and Indiana in the 3rd Ward, will serve as a permanent home for the long-standing, annual Youth Jazz Summer Camp presented by CBB. Since 1997, the Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation has been dedicated to preserving the rich history of jazz in Atlantic City. CBB founder, Henrietta Wallace Shelton, recalls years of fond memories growing up in Atlantic City in the 1950s and ‘60s. During the time of segregation, Black

beachgoers were limited to the Missouri Avenue section of the beach, which came to be known as “Chicken Bone Beach.” The beach became such a high-energy, popular place to spend the summer that it attracted the likes of celebrities such as Sammy Davis Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, and Martin Luther King Jr. When Henrietta Shelton moved back to Atlantic City in 1974 after

spending years living the transient lifestyle of a military wife, she was disappointed to see how much the city she loved had changed.

She, along with friends she had grown up with, longed for the block-party energy

of Chicken Bone Beach that lit up their childhood. As a way to honor the summers of her upbringing, she and her brother Gene began making Chicken Bone Beach t-shirts to pay respect to the beach that raised them.

In the following years, Henrietta began looking for ways to bring the rich culture of jazz back to Atlantic

City. In 1997, Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation was formed, followed by becoming an official 501c3 in 2000. For over 20 years, CBBHF has been bringing the best in jazz to the heart of Atlantic City from beach concerts and Thursday evenings in the summer at Kennedy Plaza to the yearly youth jazz institute.

The local youth has been at the heart of CBB since its inception.

For the last 17 years, Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation has been

conducting annual, tuition-free Youth Summer Jazz Camps for Atlantic City children. Each summer, their summer intensive culminates in a live jazz performance that showcases what they’ve learned. Until this year, the summer jazz camp has been housed in different locations including the last four years at Stockton’s Carnegie Center.

In 2016, CBBHF was given a beautiful gift in the form of a house on Indiana Avenue in Atlantic City. Ms.

Henrietta Shelton knew right away that they would put the property to good use in the form of a youth jazz institute that would house the annual summer camp, along with year-round music lessons.

After a long journey and a great deal of fundraising, the house has been fully renovated and finally opened its doors to local youth on Friday, July 23rd. The open house featured live jazz, free food, and community members gathered together to celebrate the opening of the CBB Youth Jazz Institute. Attendees ate, danced, and laughed on a hot Friday afternoon as they talked about Atlantic City jazz of the past, present, and future.

Inside the jazz institute, guests were taken on tours as they learned about all of the services being offered on-site. The walls are graced with pictures of musical greats and iconic pictures from the glory days of Chicken Bone Beach.

As members of the youth institute, students have the opportunity to take free online or in-person music classes. With instructors for a variety of instruments, students can choose to learn how to play the guitar, drums, violin, keyboard, or any other instrument their heart desires. If a child

8oz . Shredded reduced fat sharp Cheddar Cheese ● 1 tsp. Mustard powder ● 2 large whole eggs ● 4 egg whites or 1/2 cup egg substitute ● 2 cups low fat milk Directions : Crumble sausage into medium nonstick skillet. Cook over medium heat until nicely browned, breaking up into bits with a spatula until it cooks.

Sprinkle with poultry seasoning. Coat a 9x13 inch baking dish with canola cooking spray and set aside. Add sausage to a large bowl along with toasted bread squares, cheese, mustard ●

powder and salt if desired . Add whole eggs and egg whites and milk to the mixing bowl and beat on medium low speed until smooth and completely blended. Drizzle egg - milk mixture over sausage and bread mixture .

Stir to blend. Pour into the prepared baking dish; spread top evenly, cover with foil, then chill in the refrigerator for 8 hours overnight. Preheat oven 350° and bake, covered in foil for 45 minutes. Uncover and reduce the temperature to 325. Bake 20 minutes longer until set.

Summer Skincare: Protecting Your Most Important Feature

ummertime means sandy toes, salty splashes, and beach waves. And these are what make summer great.

But does your skin love summer the same way you do? Higher heat and horrible humidity can dry out your precious skin, leaving you feeling really oily and gross. And don’t even get me started on sunburn! Take care of your complexion and take these extra steps this summer for the perfect look:

Never forget sunscreen.

Dangerous light waves are out to get you and you can never be too cautious. Cover your face, shoulders, and wherever the sun might hit. Studies show that sunburn leads to wrinkles,

sun spots, and potentially skin cancer.

Experts recommend applying one teaspoon of sunscreen to your face and a full tablespoon to your limbs and torso. And don’t forget to reapply every couple of hours! Look for sunscreen with at least 30 SPF or higher.

Moisturize Your Skin

Remove all those oils with a simple cleanser. Apply every morning and evening (especially if you wear makeup or go swimming). Pack some cotton pads in your purse or bag for whenever sweat is overtaking your face (and maybe going to a job interview?

Or dinner parties?). A simple cleanser will make your face feel lighter and well….cleaner.

Take Shorter Showers

Long showers mean long exposure to scorching water, which can dry out your skin, especially after already spending hours swimming.

Cut your shower time in half, or even try shocking your system by turning on the cold water. Summer tends to lead to flare-ups of eczema, and reducing your shower time will help you avoid unwanted skin problems.

Stay in the Shade

You can never go wrong staying covered and reducing your exposure to damaging rays. Wear a widebrimmed hat or baseball cap, cover your shoulders with a wrap, and relax under an umbrella. Be mindful of how much time you are spending directly under the sun, and opt for a cooler, shadier alternative.

Take these simple steps and you can ensure smoother, softer skin in the future! Your skin is your largest organ, which means it needs a little extra care. And you’ll always be ready for a photo moment or kiss under the summer sun.

what you are ordering? People from Philadelphia call them hoagies, while people from the majority of America call them subs. If you are from New England, you might call them grinders. If you are from New York, you might call them torpedoes or Italians. Also, people certainly have their favorite sandwich spots! Wawa is idolized down the shore, but if you travel through Central PA, locals long for Sheetz cuisine.

Robert De Niro hung out with an uncle of co-star (and suburban Philadelphia native) Bradley Cooper to get the dialect down, though the wife of De Niro’s character, played by Australian actress Jacki Weaver, comes closest to nailing it.”

It’s important to note that accents are changing all the time, over time. Researchers are claiming that the Philadelphia accent is evolving to mimic more of a Boston accent (use softer vowels, but using hard consonants). It’s exciting to think about how we describe life around us. So ask yourself, “do you have a Philly accent?” Or “do you have a New York accent?” Little nuances make us special, and I think that the way we communicate adds to the quaint motley feel of the Jersey Shore.

Sprinkles vs. Jimmies

Northeast America calls sprinkles “jimmies,” but the rest of the country calls them sprinkles! Ask an ice cream scooper, and they’ll tell you they hear both terms! If you are from Pennsylvania or Delaware, you might say sprinkles. But if you are from New York or New Jersey, you’ll probably call them jimmies.

Y’all vs. Youse Guys

How do you address a crowd?

People from the Midwest and the South will say “Y’all,” but if you are from Philadelphia, you’ll say “youse guys.” For example, someone from Virginia might say, “I can’t handle y’all.” Someone from South Jersey might say “Youse guys are getting on my nerves.” Ask your friends and compare dialects!

According to comedian Jeff Foxworthy, you might be a Philadelphian if: you say beggle (bagel), wooder (water), tal (towel), beyoodeeful (beautiful), dennis (dentist) or Fit Shtreet (Fifth Street). Also, the name of your hometown might sound like Philuffya, and you might call your football team the Iggles, you might pronounce “ferry” and “furry” the same way, and your rendering of “radiator” might rhyme with “gladiator.”

Spending time with green-thumbed neighbors, a young Lau’ren learned about annual versus perennial plants, how to care for a garden, and the value of pouring time and energy into something beautiful.

Lau’ren recalls her parents always keeping a house plant or two around their home, near the record player, or accenting a living room. It is those childhood memories that offer full-circle, nostalgic moments for Lau’ren, as her new business, Lau’Fleur begins to bloom.

Lau’Fleur began as a necessity for Lau’ren. “Plants were an escape during a stressful time in my life.

Finding beauty in the simple things has always been a way to alleviate stress. Plants and flowers have always done that for me.”

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Lau’ren had been using her gift of a green thumb to create beautiful floral arrangements for friends, family, and special occasions. As demand began to increase for bouquets, the Lau’Fleur business started to grow naturally.

When the world shut down in March 2020, the interest in houseplants for mental and physical health increased exponentially. As Lau’ren was adding houseplants to her own collection, she noticed a need for her knowledge and experience among her friends.

“My collection went from 3, to 10, to 20 and I started seeing the difference in how houseplants react. Then people started asking me for advice and I found such joy in doing that for

them.” explains Ellis.

The aforementioned seeds eventually culminated in a beautiful, home-based business now known as Lau’Fleur.

Lau’Fleur, which is french for “flower,” and a creative play on Lau’ren’s name, is a full service plant center.

Offering a variety of plant services as well as custom floral arrangements, Lau’Fleur has something to meet every need.

Services include plant consultations where Lau’ren will come to your home to evaluate which plants will do best in your unique lighting situation or help you set up a plant oasis of your own. Consultations take into consideration the family’s lifestyle, travel, lighting, and design needs. From the plants to the pots, Lau’ren works with clients to create a plant inspired atmosphere.

Additionally, Lau’Fleur offers plant scouting, repotting, wholesale options, and of course, plant sales.

Three houseplant tips from Lau’Fleur: ● Drainage holes are necessary. If your pots do not have drainage holes, place the nursery pot inside of the decorative pot. When it’s time to water, remove the nursery pot and allow the water to fully drain from the bottom. ● When in doubt, underwater. Underwatering your plants is always better than overwatering, which can cause root rot and other plant problems. ● When you have plants, you get bugs. A simple mixture of 25% apple cider vinegar, 10% dish soap, and water will do the trick.

ome of the Henry Doorly Zoo, the College World Series for baseball, railroads, breweries, and ME for a period of five years.

From 1998-2003, I lived and worked in Omaha at KPTM Fox 42 and I’m out here for a reunion with those folks, and enjoying some Midwestern hospitality…

Since I last wrote, the Flyers have continued to change their roster through what can only be described as a “go for it” summer makeover.

They still need a backup goalie though. The Phillies are approaching the trade deadline proclaiming to be “buyers” and they did win in walkoff fashion most recently as I write this. The Sixers are getting ready for the NBA draft, but it doesn’t have the same hype and hoopla as some

years in the past. The Eagles are just starting training camp. Finally, on the local front, we’ll check in with a local baseball pitcher who’s continuing to shine at the minor league level. Plus, three high school basketball legends meet up at a hoops camp in Richland.

From entertainment, since I’m out in Nebraska, I watched a big budget movie on the hotel TV that I guess was considered a flop, but I enjoyed it. I’m also reading a book by an actor that many adore, as he continues to struggle with Parkinson’s disease. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● For the second straight week, I have no choice but to start with my beloved Flyers as GM Chuck Fletcher continued to “wheel and deal” as he tries to retool the roster. Say “hello” to Cam Atkinson and Rasmus Ristolainen.

Say “goodbye” to Jake Voracek, Shayne Gostisbehere, Robert Hagg and a bunch of draft picks.

Folks, this is a MAJOR overhaul of the roster, and it will be interesting to see if Fletcher’s moves ultimately pay off. ● Let’s try to unpack these moves one at a time as the Flyers gained $2.375 million -- for each of the

PT on the site of old Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha next three years -- in cap space when they dealt Jake Voracek for Atkinson. That money will come in handy as they try to add a backup goalie who is durable enough to play at least 30 games. I liked Voracek’s game, but HATED his contract, so I’m okay with this move. Atkinson is a scorer with an “in-your-face” mentality where many times Voracek sort of “disappeared” when things got rough & physical. Again, I’m all on board with this one.

Rasmus Ristolainen is a veteran defenseman who plays with an edge. In case you missed it, HALF of the defense will be new next season as Ryan Ellis, Ristolainen and most likely Cam York are IN, while Phil Myers, Ghost & Robert Hagg are out. I don’t think it was just those three guys fault. The Flyers’ defensive collapse – which saw them go from seventh to 31st in the league in a one-year span that coincided with Matt Niskanen’s retirement -- was truly a team effort, but changing the defensive corps was KEY. Finally, the draft picks. Sam Carchidi in the Philadelphia Inquirer described it best writing, “For better or worse, Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher last week threw away draft picks like people tossing rice at newlyweds as they leave the church. Here’s a first-rounder, there’s a second-rounder. Here’s a second-rounder, there’s a seventh-rounder.” Now, draft picks in hockey are often long-range bets.

Some pay off, some don’t. But Ron Hextall always liked to stockpile those picks, and now Fletcher is taking the change on improving the team quickly. Fletcher even said he was trying to change the team’s culture and change a lock-

er room that had gone stale. Hey, major props from me to him for at least taking a chance! Let’s see if it all pays off now.

Fletcher and the Flyers do have one last piece of business they need to wrap up, and that’s to find a backup goalie to Carter Hart. Former Kings and Red Wings goalie Jonathan Bernier makes a lot of sense as he played for Flyers senior adviser Dean Lombardi when Lombardi was the GM in Los Angeles.

After they sign restricted free agents Hart and Travis Sanheim, the Flyers are expected to have about $4.7 million in cap space.

Most of that will go toward a No. 2 goalie. They are also interested

in a penalty-killing forward and a depth defenseman, but they need them to be inexpensive unless they trade a player and lose his cap hit.

By the next column, I predict I’ll be able to tell you who the new Flyers backup goalie will be. Man, two weeks in a row of leading off with my favorite team. I just LOVE it!

Let’s switch to baseball now as the Phillies won in walk off fashion over the Washington Nationals and continue to try and catch the Mets in the N.L. East. Andrew McCutchen saves the day for the Phils. They are now 30-19 at home as I write this and just 20-30 on the road. Their run differential is still a minus-22, but let’s see what moves Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski makes by Friday. It's been a decade since the Phillies reached October.

They need to add some pieces before the trade deadline this week to have a shot at the postseason.

McCutchen is the third active player in the majors with 250 career home runs and eight career walkoff homers, joining Albert Pujols and Ryan Zimmerman, per Elias.

Also per Elias, Monday was the first time the Phillies won a game in which they trailed by at least four runs through five innings since Aug. 15, 2019. These cardiac

Vince Velasquez has struggled (again), but manager Joe Girardi says he’s going to stay in the starting rotation (for now).

And here’s a good time to sneak in some Mike Adams news. Adams continues to pitch well at Triple-A Lehigh Valley as at last check, he had a 0.93 ERA in nine and twothirds innings of work.

In 21 minor-league games, he was 1-1 with a 4.43 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 20¹/³ innings.

You might remember that the Holy Spirit High School graduate and Egg Harbor Township resident was signed by the Phillies in January after he impressed scouts with his 98 mph fastball during a tryout. He started the season with high single-A Clearwater Threshers. He was also gracious enough to let me use a picture of him in a sweet Iron Pigs throwback maroon jersey with his lovely girlfriend Sam Lavrich. Way to go Mike! Keep making us proud and I can’t wait until you’re at Citizens Bank Park buddy!

In basketball, it’s a big week for the Sixers as the NBA draft is going to be held on Thursday. Right now, the Sixers have picks in the first round (No. 28) and second round (50) in Thursday’s draft at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

During the early years of “The Process,” the atmosphere in Philadelphia leading up to the NBA draft was once equivalent to the Super Bowl. It doesn’t appear to be like that this year. Especially with a lot of the focus surrounding the team’s quest to trade Ben Simmons and what’s going to happen once free agency begins at 6 p.m. on Aug. 2.

The Sixers have to figure out if they’ll bring back Dwight Howard in free agency. If not, they’ll need a backup center. If they’re successful trading Simmons, the Sixers will need a ball handler. Even if they keep him, the Sixers are going to need a true point guard. They have Tyrese Maxey, but he’s not a pure point guard. If Danny Green doesn’t come back, the Sixers are going to need to add a solid shooting wing who can defend via free agency. They also have figure out what to do with sharpshooter Furkan Korkmaz, who becomes a free agent this summer.

Let me reiterate that I’d love to see Kyle Lowry in a Sixers uniform. He might be too expensive though as Lowry’s asking price is $90 million over three seasons. And he'll have plenty of suitors outside of the Sixers, including the Knicks, Lakers, Mavericks, Pelicans, and Heat.

Finally, I have to mention the Eagles and football right. Pretty soon, they’ll lead most of these columns, but as I write this, they are holding their first official practice of training camp. All eyes should be on Jalen Hurts as the

Eagles try to figure out whether or not he’s the long-term answer at quarterback. Remember, I’m in Omaha right now, and a long-time newspaper columnist out here, who has covered college football for 40 years, says NO. File that one in your memory bank.

Of course, the other big story is will the Eagles make a move for Deshaun Watson. That story kicked up again this past week as reports are that Houston is ready to deal, but at what price? And with his legal troubles, what team

would actually make a move for Watson right now?

After being the last player to walk off the field and crying at his postgame press conference, Zach Ertz is expected to be at training camp for the Eagles. Hey, the penalty for missing is $50,000 per day, so I suppose this makes sense. Maybe now the Eagles are waiting to see if another team has an injury at tight end and they’ll move Ertz when someone will actually pay a better price for him.

Finally, I’m intrigued to see what new coach Nick Sirianni brings to the table. My thought is that at the bare minimum, the wide receivers will be better because Sirianni played that position himself and coached that position in Indianapolis. It’s going to be interesting!

I just have one more sports item and that’s on the local front as very quietly, three boys basketball coaching legends gathered in Richland for a basketball camp. Paul Rodio and Bob Hurley joined forces to organize a summer camp for boys and girls ages 10-18. I caught wind of this by seeing a picture that Atlantic City basketball coach Gene Allen put on his Facebook page, and immediately knew I had to include it in the column here. Hall of Fame. He’s the winningest coach in New Jersey history. Rodio is number two. And Gene Allen is no slouch either! Trust me, these three are like basketball ROYALTY and it was great to see the three of them in the small Spina gymnasium on Prep’s campus in Richland.

Hurley, who has a state-best 1,185 career victories, and Rodio, who boasts a South Jersey-leading 968 wins, called the camp one of the most anticipated of their careers.

you watching? I can’t lie, I’m really not, but a lot of that has to do with being on vacation. Hey, they’re on everywhere I go, but they’re not grabbing my attention in the way they have in the past. Maybe that’s because the U.S. is struggling?

Simone Biles is out in gymnastics.

The U.S. Men’s Basketball team looks shaky. The U.S. softball team gets blanked by host Japan. Naomi Osaka is ousted in the 3rd round of the Olympics. Hey, maybe the golf will suck me in, but for me, these games so far have been a snooze-fest.

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I caught the 2012 movie “Battleship” on the hotel TV the other morning. It was considered to be a box office flop, but I enjoyed it.

Maybe it’s because I like Peter Berg’s style of directing. Maybe it’s because he reunited Friday Night Lights co-stars Taylor Kitsch and Jesse Plemons. Hey, maybe it’s because Brooklyn Decker is one of the most beautiful women on the planet! I’m just saying I liked it, and if you like anything to do with the Navy, you’ll like it too I bet.

Lastly, I’m on vacation, so you have to have a book on the plane, right?

I am reading “No Time Like the Future – An Optimist Considers

Mortality” by Michael J. Fox. This is Fox’s third book since he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and like the first two, I love his relatable stories about his life and career as I continue to root for him and his family. Who doesn’t love Marty McFly or Alex P. Keaton?

I’ll close with a personal note and prayer for my mother. On July 26th, it would’ve been her 80th birthday. She passed away in 1993 at the way too young age of 51. I’m now 50 and it’s hard to believe that she’s been gone so long. I’d like to think she would be a regular reader of this column each week and my best supporte and advisor!

meal. We eat a lot of fire-grilled mushrooms, veggies, and herb-filled dishes when cooking over an open flame, so the flavors are a match made in heaven. The warm earth and spice components of a great Pinot, often coupled with a hint of smokiness, elevate any dish with some grill marks on it. L’Umami ($19.99) is an old favorite out of Oregon for those who enjoy those earthier flavors, and it has a super quaint mushroom doodle on the label (which I understand doesn’t make the wine taste better but it really adds something, y’know?). If you’re feeling something French, Jessiaume Bourgogne Rouge ($24.99) absolutely over-delivers.

For the maddeningly hot, mid-day sips, I always have a crisp, chillable white on hand. For some clean and refreshing flavor and thirst-quenching acidity, I usually opt for Sauv Blanc or Picpoul. If citrus and tropicality are

great sense of pride when it all comes together as planned. Let’s talk out the process of choosing an in-TENTS-ly good camping menu.

Bubbles are so often reserved for classy dinners and fine occasions, but I’ll forever be advocating for them in less glamorous situations, such as being covered in dirt and soot as you try to start a campfire in the rain. A weekend away from it all is occasion enough if you ask me, and nothing transports me to a more serene mindset faster than the hearty POP of a caged cork.

My current favorite is Montinore’s Vivacé ($20.99), a very subtly sweet blend of white grapes from Oregon.

If I’m craving some color, I’ll opt for Val de Mer Brut Rosé ($20.99), which is rich in ripe strawberry notes and bright acidity. If you’re in the mood for an upgrade, you’ll never be disappointed in Gonet-Medeville’s Brut Champagne ($39.99). It drinks far above its price point, and is organic (in fact, all the bubblies listed here are organic)!

For pairing with dinner, I absolutely adore a Pinot Noir with a campfire

your jam, go for Ranga Ranga Sauvignon Blanc ($14.99) or Tablelands Sauv Blanc ($13.49). If you’re a real acidity and pucker lover, look no further than Domitia Picpoul ($15.99).

The name “picpoul” literally means “lip-stinger”! All of these wines are also great alongside light summer fare, so you’ll be able to enjoy what’s left with dinner, too!

Strength in numbers; Exercising with like-minded people Shore Fit

f you’re in the exercise world, nine out ten times you’ve either experienced this yourself or witnessed others struggling to make it to that 6am Bootcamp class.

Finding the motivation to actually make it can be so difficult when the your not feeling it on a particular day or week. There is something to be said about the power of working out in a group. What is it about exercising with others that motivates us?

When it comes to workouts, there’s some truth to the old adage, “There’s strength in numbers.” There’s nothing better than a group of like minded people supporting and cheering each other on. I see it all the time whether it’s in my backyard or in the gyms where I instruct. We laugh, we joke around, we sweat like crazy but most of all, we are there for each other and that sense of camaraderie is second to none. Group activity may not be a new concept but it has certainly been on the rise for as long as I can remember.

Healthy actions of others rub off on us and people tend to gravitate towards the exercise behaviors of those around them. I one hundred percent agree that being in constant company of like minded people is so beneficial.

If your internal motivation is low then an accountability partner could be just what you need!

Some have weight loss goals while others may have workout goals like running a marathon and they will get there by spending time with their fit friends. The goals are the same and accountability partners are in place. The more time they spend together, the quicker these goals can be obtained.

Friendships are built and bonds are made because the people involved have similar interests and goals.

Workouts with others improve consistency because they involve a commitment. No shows and cancellations get noticed by others and

positive peer pressure can help curtail the urges to skip a workout or even quit. When someone is counting on you, you tend to not want to let them down. If you say it, you must do it!

For most people, it’s difficult to stay consistent with workout routines, but having a certain group there waiting for you provides you with the motivation and accountability ever yone needs to be successful. It also can push you to perform better. When it comes to group fitness, this translates to possibly pushing yourself harder when working out with people who are fitter than you.

You will strive to hold that plank longer or push out 5 more burpees when you’re tired.

Group workouts can have a couple of mental advantages over solo workouts. While it’s true that working out releases endorphins (a runner’s high), but did you also know that it can lead to the release of endorphins outside

of just the physical exertion. This is achieved through smiling. Smiling increases endorphin levels. I hear this all the time in my water aerobics classes.

They tell me that they always leave feeling happier than when they arrived because we have a great time together, laughing, smiling and dancing to great music. This is a wonderful addition to that runners high that you achieve from the physical aspects of working out. It’s an amazing feeling to see people do things they never thought they could until it took the person next to them to encourage them to complete that set, rep, mile or round.

There’s a bond that is created when a group struggles, sweats, and grinds their way through a tough workout. I focus on building relationships in class because if that happens, I know participants will come back again and again.

Meet Leslie Jespersen: Self Love & Lifestlyle Blogger

rowing up in Atlantic City, Leslie Jespersen was the child of entrepreneurs.

Her parents, who orchestrated festivals, sat on community boards, and owned businesses, often brought young Leslie along for the ride. From sitting in board meetings as a child to working at her parents’ bookstore during her teenage years, Leslie credits much of her work ethic to her entrepreneurial upbringing.

As the oldest of five siblings, Leslie learned about responsibility, hustle, and business at a young age.

The mother of two, who now resides in Brigantine, is the founder of Marsolluna + Co. Among several other endeavors, Leslie is also the founder of “Volume Up! with Leslie Jespersen,” a podcast created to help women evolve, grow, and find inspiration both personally and professionally.

Her journey to self-love, acceptance, and unapologetic living has not been an easy path. In 2012, while raising two young children, Hurricane

Sandy destroyed her home and ultimately led to a divorce, undesirable living situations, and a great deal of life changes. Inventory from her direct sales business was destroyed. She never stepped foot in the house that she once called home again. Being the resilient woman that she is, Leslie got to work to rebuild a life that she could be proud of for her and her children.

While Leslie’s life has not looked the same since 2012, the changes that followed ultimately molded her into the woman and leader that she is today.

Leslie is passionate about helping women to find their voice, take back their power, and level up in life. She uses her various platforms to connect with women in meaningful ways, helping them to let go of self-doubt and live confidently in their truth. She is the host of several women empowerment events and speaks publicly on the topics of divorce, resiliency, co-parenting, self-love, and self-confidence. Using her own story in combination with the voices of those she has met along the way, Leslie wakes up every day with the intention to use her story, her passions, and her gifts

for good.

In 2016, with her communications degree, social media experience, and time as a radio host under her belt, Leslie launched Marsolluna + Co. With her mother as a safety net, Leslie took a leap of faith and has not looked back since. Marsolluna offers social media consultation, ad design, digital marketing, and public relations services.

Through the stress of losing her home, divorce, and trying to find her way again, Leslie eventually found herself physically sick and exhausted.

When her body began to shut down, she was challenged to see herself differently. Through forgiveness, therapy, intuitive eating, and a lot of self-work, Leslie found a new voice within. Her story was ever-evolving and she wanted to share what she was learning about life, body image, and womanhood with others.

Leslie launched her “Volume Up! with Leslie Jespersen” podcast as an avenue to connect with women in a deeper way. From her podcast to her “Unapologetic Lifestyle & Inspo” Facebook group, Leslie is dedicated to changing the narrative around wom-

en’s bodies and self-image.

This August, Leslie is hosting a Hot Girl Summer: Self-Love Party and Mini Retreat. The five-hour self-love pool party, being held on August 21st, is catered to women who need to escape and take a deep breath. Activities are centered around self-acceptance and positive body image including selflove hypnosis, healing mirror work, a dance party, and an empowering photoshoot.

Value of a Funeral Service, Part 5

n my last few columns, I explained several benefits of holding a funeral service. One I would like to highlight this week is how they create a forum to share spiritual values and beliefs. I am not here to convert you to any one religion, however, I am a believer and I have seen faith be an anchor to many families who are lost in a storm of emotions during a time of loss. At Jeffries and Keates Funeral Home I have been blessed to serve many different faiths in our local community.

These would be Roman Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Reformed Jewish, Buddhists, Unitarians, Taoists, Hindus, Methodists, Lutherans, Baptists, Haitian Pentecostals, Presbyterians and many an Independent Protestant and with all of them the commonality

is that their spiritual beliefs gave the survivors a sense of order, structure, security and hope. A funeral service has its beginning roots in the church/ religion, and therefore in many situations we walk hand in hand with the Priest, Rabbi, Monk or other clergy.

Being able to express your faith at a time of loss is incredibly powerful and helpful. I have seen many a loss that would crush a parent, husband or wife and their belief in their faith gets them through it.

A funeral service helps to ease the transition to a new life after the death of a loved one. I have heard a local minister say in his funeral homily that “a death of a loved one is the same thing as an amputation of a limb”. I have to say that I feel that that is a perfect analogy of what the loss feels like of someone close to you. This is especially true of the relationship with spouses. If you have slept, ate, and lived with the same person for over 30 years when they are suddenly gone, you feel an immense void in your life. If you hold no ceremony to recognize that loss and you try to ignore that loss by moving on like nothing has happened you are just fooling yourself. The funeral service acknowledges that loss and honors

the loved one.

A funeral Service allows mourners a structured activity or “something to do” during a disorienting time. When a loss of a loved one occurs there are a huge number of people who are lost because the experience of death is completely new to them. They have never had to deal with death before and they don’t know what to do.

Having something like the event of a funeral service offers a welcome opportunity to focus on something.

People think “Oh my God, my mother just died, what do I do”, “Oh, I have to call the funeral home and they will guide me” or “I need to think about planning a service”. Having something to work on gives people a sense of comfort and direction when the world seems to have turned upside down.

Funeral services can serve as a rite of passage and important social ritual.

There is a common phrase or belief that you are never truly an adult until both of your parents have died. Once you have lost both your mother and father you are in essence an orphan and you have to rely completely on yourself. Yes, if you have a spouse or siblings you can look to them but it is not the same as going to your parents for help or guidance. I have

talked to many children of whom they were laying to rest their last parent and they said it was a weird feeling, knowing that they were gone. They also felt that it was their duty and the right thing to do holding the service to honor them properly.

Steffen Klenk, Shore Local Columnist and Photographer:

A

n incredible amount of talent and love goes into each edition of Shore Local Newsmagazine. Our “Meet The Team” series was created to share the stories behind the Shore Local storytellers. Each week, we will introduce you to one member of the Shore Local team as we honor and celebrate every individual that makes Shore Local possible. Written

by Krystle J Bailey 28 year-old Steffen Klenk grew up on the beach in Ocean City. Raised by a single mother, Steffen grew up with Asperger Syndrome, which brought with it a fair share of challenges for Steffen including delayed speech and sensitivity to loud noises.

Now working as a full time journalist for Shore Local, Steffen has evolved exponentially since his initial diagnosis.

He credits much of that to his mother who has been his biggest advocate.

“She is caring and compassionate.

Having that figure in my life has really shaped me,” shares Klenk in reference to his mom.

Steffen always envisioned his life as a meteorologist. As a school aged student, Steffen would often deliver the weather report to his classmates and spend his time recording pretend weather reports on his mother’s camera.

After graduating from Ocean City Highschool in 2011, Steffen was unsure of his life’s path. In 2014, he attended a job training program at Jewish Family Services in Margate, where he found a path to journalism. He began as an intern for a local media outlet in the graphics department and began working in marketing for a local dog walking company.

Everything began to change for Steffen in 2017 when he was introduced to Cindy and Bob Fertsch, founders of Shore Local Newsmagazine. It was the early days of Shore Local when Steffen met the Fertsch family at an event for their non-profit organization, Heart of Surfing.

Steffen began taking pictures for local events and had his visual work published in Shore Local within the first two months. Steffen shares that being involved with Shore Local has pushed him outside of his comfort zone and helped him to grow in so many ways.

“It has allowed me the opportunity to go out into the community and talk to people I hardly even know, which is something that was foreign to me. I can’t even describe what this experience has meant to me,” explains Klenk.

Within six months, Steffen submitted his first article that featured monarch butterflies. That opened the floodgates for Klenk, as he began to find his passion in writing and photography.

These days, Steffen Klenk writes about a variety of topics in each Shore Local edition. He most enjoys writing about non-profit organizations in his community such as Gilda’s Club, the HERO Campaign, and Humane Society of Ocean City.

In addition to weekly articles, Steffen is a guest on the Shore Local radio show, Shore Local Live, each Friday night, as the entertainment guide.

“If you would have told me 10 years ago that I would be talking to so many people and have my voice heard each week, I would have definitely said that was not for me. Now I have so much appreciation for this field,” shares Klenk.

When Steffen is not busy writing for Shore Local, he spends his time listening to music, attending local concerts, and hanging out with his family. He is an avid hockey fan and loves the Philadelphia Flyers. Recently, Steffen was honored to be a judge for the Art in the Park festival hosted by the Somers Point Arts Commission.

“It means a lot to work for Shore Local. This is my first real job. I don’t know what my future holds or where I’m going next but I know I am getting a great start right here. We’re all here together and that is a big deal.”
