Giving back one wave at a time Heart of Surfing back on the beach, awards two scholarships

It all began in 2014 with a vision, but little in the way of resources. The first event we held consisted of five of us on the beach and three were our family members. From there we grew, at lightspeed! Celebrating Life at The Southern NJ Shore

Atlantic City Beach Patrol was amazing!

Helping on every level, they also had the greatest smiles and were fantastic with the special needs participants.

Everyone, volunteers and participants alike, had a fantastic day and it was all smiles on the beach!

The mission of Heart of Surfing is not for the kids to stand up on the surfboard, but rather to simply create a positive experience. Some kids

pop-up and we cheer. Others ride the waves on their belly and we still cheer. Our goal is their smile.

It takes a village and a lot of coordination to make that happen. The surf community has been very supportive, along with the beach patrols and fire departments. Teens and young adults also volunteer on a regular basis.

Each year we present scholarships to outstanding volunteers that are recent high school graduates. Last Saturday, July 17th, we presented the 6th Annual Liam's Legacy Scholarship to Claire Pinnie and the 2nd Annual Jamie Fertsch Memorial Scholarship to Cole Young. Each scholarship is named in honor of a local with autism that passed suddenly at a young age.

Hurricane Season: The first quarter is done...but three long ones to go Weather

Q

uiet is good. And that's where we stand as we pass the 25% mark. Yes, we're a quarter of the way through the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, one that picked up right where last year's record-breaking season left off. Tropical Storm Ana developed close to Bermuda in late May, before the official start of the season on June 1st, and away we went. Tropical Storms Bill, Claudette, and Danny followed in quick succession as mostly rainmakers, with Claudette making landfall in Louisiana and Danny in South Carolina. And the early volley of activity wrapped up with Hurricane Elsa, which we dealt with in tropical storm form after the Fourth of July.

Some heavy rain and a few South Jersey tornadoes courtesy of Elsa put the exclamation point on an active first quarter.

Elsa was the earliest forming fifth named storm ever in the Atlantic. And that of course has many wondering if the 2021 season could keep up with or even break last year's record pace, when 30 named storms and 14 hurricanes formed through the warm waters of the Atlantic basin. The most likely answer is no, and this year will not be quite as active, but it can't entirely be ruled out either. However, one of the most well-established and successful hurricane forecasting teams in the country, from Colorado State University, recently upped their expectations for this year from their initial prediction of 17 storms to a new forecast of 20 named systems.

That's still a well above average year in terms of numbers, and remember, it only takes one storm to define a

season. And yes, I see the quirkiness of one of an elite tropical forecasting team being deep in the landlocked and hurricane-free high altitudes of the Rocky Mountains.

But for now, we're in a lull, and likely will be through the end of July and perhaps into early August. That's not uncommon, before a historically significant uptick in activity from mid-August through mid-October, the peak of the season each year. The waters are warmer, so hurricanes and even major hurricanes are more likely during this time, compared to weaker tropical storms, which are favored in June and July. We can thank lots of dust from the Sahara Desert in Africa for helping to make the atmosphere over the Atlantic hostile for storm formation, as well as sinking air and higher pressures over much of the Atlantic Ocean right now, which leads to fair and not stormy weather. Both are forecast to abate by August 10th15th, and the calm will eventually end.

So if forecasts are correct, at least another 15 storms may still develop over the next four months. But if those 15 storms spin harmlessly over the ocean and stay clear of land, we're no worse off despite the high numbers of storms. One 2020 record we'd like to avoid coming close to breaking is the extraordinary 11 landfalls that the United States saw from tropical systems. But unfortunately, steering currents and the overall pattern in the Atlantic favors storms either developing closer to the United States or that track towards our coast. That means that several hurricane landfalls are certainly possible from Texas to Maine, but of course it's too early to pinpoint where any landfall is most likely to occur. 2020 was a Gulf of Mexico year, with the exception of Isaias, which came up the East Coast in early August. We can always hope for recurvature, when storms recurve out into the Atlantic before becoming a problem for us. But the pattern this

season suggests that several storms should be able to break through.

Forecasting an active hurricane season isn't taking a big leap, as this will likely be the sixth season in a row that will be remembered as an active and above average year. Further, forecasting a busy mid-August to mid-October is far from going out on a limb, as that is after all the meat of the season every year. Still, devoting at least one of my weekly columns each month during the summer to the topic of the tropics is worthwhile, as it keeps the talk (and hopefully the preparation for) the hurricane season in the forefront.

Early season storms like Elsa, while rare, further that cause by reminding us of our vulnerability. And it's also worth noting that other seasons in the past with July activity on the East Coast ended up having stronger storms at least threaten the coast in August and especially September.

So don't let the relative lack of action over the next two to three weeks fool you into thinking the rest of the season is going to be quiet. Of course, we'll enjoy the quiet and hopefully some nice beach weather while it lasts. All signs point to a bustling second and third quarters of the 2021 season, with the biggest unknowns being how many stronger hurricanes may develop and where they may eventually track. One plus with hurricanes is the advanced warning we can provide you. With tornadoes, that warning can be only minutes, but with any hurricane, it will almost always be days, sometimes perhaps as much as a week, like with Sandy.

One quarter down. Three more to go until the season ends on November 30th. And it's the next two quarters that will likely keep forecasters busy over the next few months.

He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Teenage banner plane pilot makes emergency landing on Ocean City bridge

n July 19th, Ocean City police and fire crews responded to a call that a banner plane made an emergency landing on the Route 52 Causeway between Ocean City and Somers Point.

Landon Lucas, an 18-year-old flying for Paramount Air Service, reported that his plane began to experience engine trouble as he was flying near Steel Pier in Atlantic City. He released his banner into the ocean and was attempting to reach Ocean City Municipal Airport when he spotted a gap in traffic in the westbound lanes of the causeway.

The pilot successfully landed with no damage to the plane and no injury to himself or any motorist.

"I was taking pictures under the bridge and walked up to my truck to see people scurrying towards the center of the bridge," shared, photographer John Loreaux. "One lady stopped and said are you with the press? I said why? She said didn't you see the plane land on the bridge? I said what? Yeah look down there. I saw a few emergency vehicles and walked right down there and took those pictures. It was kind of surreal."

An Easy-to-Make Summer Sweet

W

hen it's beyond hot out side and the kids are begging for a delicious afternoon snack, sometimes it's difficult to know where to turn. The pantry is full and the refrigerator is stocked, yet nothing sounds appetizing when it's scorching outside.

Combining three simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen can save the day and provide a refreshing and scrumptious snack.

Try this 3-lngredients Strawberry Ice Cream on warm days ahead . It's chilled to perfection with fresh strawberries and fluffy whipping cream to create a creamy texture perfect for the kiddos.

Start by pureeing 1 pound of fresh strawberries. Add 1 pint of whipping cream and sweetened condensed milk to a mixing bowl then beat until stiff peaks form.

Fold the strawberry puree in with the whipping cream mixture. Pour into a loaf pan and freeze for 5 hours.

Before serving, let ice cream soften for 5-1 0 minutes.

Jimmy Johnson’s “Quest For The Ring” Fishing Tournament Scores in AC Michael Jordan among contestants

immy Johnson, a Pro Football Hall of Fame coach who won both the 1991 and 1993 Super Bowl titles with the Dallas Cowboys, is the catalyst behind 10 years of fishing tournaments in Hollywood, Florida. This is the first time he has come north with his “Quest For The Ring” fishing tournament by teaming up with the Atlantic City Sports Commission.

Sunflowers with a side of antiques

W

hat do you get when you mix sunflowers and antiques? Stunning photo opportunities at every turn. From the 1957 Chevy truck to the antique wagon wheel, beauty abounds at the Good Old Days Sunflower Farm in Upper Township.

Located on the corner of Dennisville-Petersburg Road and South Old Tuckahoe Road, the sunflower fields sprawl out as far as the eye can see.

Donald Westergom has been farming sunflowers in this location for more than 20 years. “Every year I plant a couple hundred thousand,” says Westergom.

Together with Ketty Lippi, they tend to the sunflowers that Ketty affectionately calls “their girls.” July through mid-September, they have a roadside farm stand bursting with fresh cut sunflowers that sell for only .50 each with an honesty can for the

many patrons that stop by for their sunflowers.

You might think that the sunflower business would have escaped the devastation that hit so many in 2020.

Although it was not Covid-19, the farm was hit by a streak of bad weather events that devastated the sunflower fields. Fortunately, this year, the farm is once again bursting with sunflowers and blooming in full glory.

The Sunf lower Farm has become a very sought-after place to take photos for special occasions. Westergom shares that many engagement and wedding photos are taken in those sunflower fields.

Artists come from all around to sketch and paint the sunflowers.

Art clubs go into the fields and set up their easels on a regular basis. But the strangest request that Westergom ever got came a couple of years

ago when a rock-and-roll band came to shoot their music video in the sunflower fields.

Donald Westercom, owner and founder of the Sunflower Farm, cuts a couple hundred sunflowers daily to place at his roadside stand. He still offers the best deal in town, charging only 50 cents per flower and $5 for a photo shoot in the fields and with the antiques.

Interestingly, a poet once visited the sunflower farm and wrote a poem about the sunflowers in her book “Passion of a Poet.” A photo of Ketty in the sunflower field appears on the back cover of the book which was sold internationally.

“Photographers love to come in the evening,” says Ketty. “The flowers change color, becoming a richer shade of gold. It is so beautiful.” When I asked Westergom why sunflowers, he smiled and replied “I like how happy it makes everyone. Nothing else makes people so happy.”

ince 1979, Air Circus has been providing young children and families a lifetime of memories. Located on the bustling Ocean City boardwalk, it is one of the area’s most popular stores. The shop

Doug Jewell, the owner of Air Circus, has been a toy enthusiast for decades.

“When I opened this store, I put every toy I had in here as a kid.” While in the second grade, he began to juggle, play with yo-yos, and often fidget with different school objects. “I was the kid that spun the ruler on the pencil,” Jewell explains.

Jewell majored in education and psychology.

He also has worked as a civil engineer. After living in Maryland, he opened up his first shop on the 900 block of the Ocean City board- Photos by Steffen Klenk walk. Night in Venice Returns to Ocean City for 2021

cean City’s Night in Venice celebration returns on Saturday (July 24, 2021) for the 66th time since it began in 1954 as a way to mark Ocean City’s 75th anniversary. After missing last year’s event, everybody will be excited for the return of the festivities.

Just announced on Monday: Kate Flannery, a star of NBC’s “The Office,” will be at the Music Pier on Friday, July 23 for a special meet-and-greet session. Tickets for the event are on sale now.

Here’s everything you need to know to enjoy the Night in Venice festivities and the Kate Flannery event.

When is Night in Venice?

The parade starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2021.

Where does the parade route begin and end?

The boat parade begins near the Ocean City-Longport toll bridge and travels along the bayside to Tennessee Avenue, looping in and out of lagoons along the way.

Where can I watch the parade?

To view the Night In Venice boat

parade, grandstands will be set up at street ends along the bay from Battersea Road to 16th Street and also at Tennessee Avenue. These are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Streets include: Battersea Rd., North Street, First Street, Sixth Street, Seventh Street, 11th Street, 13th Street, 15th Street, 16th Street and Tennessee Avenue.

The Bayside Center, 520 Bay Avenue, will be open with a picnic area, barbecued food for sale (to benefit the Junior Raiders football and cheerleading squads) and bleacher seating plus DJ entertainment. Tickets are

on sale, $4 for children (12-and-under) and $8 for adults. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with DJ entertainment playing from then until the first boats in the parade arrive at about 6:15 p.m.

The DJ will resume after the parade and play until the fireworks start at approximately 9 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by cash, check or charge at: City Hall, 861 Asbury Avenue, any day 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No alcohol is permitted, and no parking is available. Tickets are also available online at oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice. Don’t wait to purchase tickets as this event sells out.

What does it cost?

The parade is free to watch at all locations except the Bayside Center.

Where can I park?

Free parking and shuttle service will run starting at 4 p.m. Parking will be available at: ● Ocean City Municipal Airport: 25th Street and Bay Avenue ● Soccer Field at Tennessee Avenue: Off Shelter Road ● Ocean City Community Center: 1735 Simpson Avenue Shuttles will drop off spectators at street ends where they can watch the parade and return them to the parking lots afterward. The shuttle also drops off at the Bayside Center. The service is free and will be available until 10 p.m.

Parking restrictions begin at midnight Friday (July 23) through midnight Saturday (July 24) for the following locations: ● Both sides of Bay Avenue between 16th Street and 24th Street

Parking regulations will be strictly enforced. Violators will be ticketed and in severe cases, the vehicles will be towed if public safety is affected.

This is to allow for safe passage of all pedestrian and vehicle traffic and emergency vehicle access to all areas of the bayfront.

Can I watch from the Ninth Street Bridge?

All pedestrians and bicyclists should use the Shared Use Bike Path and stay to the south side shoulder for viewing. No persons will be allowed to bring chairs for seating onto the bridge. At no time will persons block the free movement of the Shared Use Bike Path. No open alcoholic beverages are permitted on the bridge at any time. Persons are not permitted to walk along the bridge with motor vehicle traffic. Ocean City Police will be present monitoring the bridge while the parade is in progress for assistance.

What is the Night in Venice theme?

The event's theme is "Honoring Our Heroes." Boats and houses are encouraged to pay tribute to all of the health care workers, first responders, essential employees and others who helped us get through the year.

Participants may also use last year’s planned “Olympics” theme. These themes are optional.

When and where are the fireworks?

Night in Venice will include a fireworks display launched after the parade from a barge in the bay north of the Ninth Street Bridge, roughly off Third Street. The display should ●

be best viewed from street ends or the bayfront between the Ocean City-Longport toll bridge and 16th Street.

Who participates?

Anyone with a boat or anyone with a house along the bayfront parade route can participate by decorating their boat or home.

Judges pick winners among boats, homes and condominium complexes.

How do I participate?

You can register your boat or house online at ocnj.us/niv.

How can I see results of the contest?

Results will be announced on ocnj. us and oceancityvacation.com by noon Sunday, July 25, and awards can be picked up starting at 1 p.m. July 25 from the City Hall Welcome Center.

Are paddleboards and kayaks part of the parade?

For safety reasons, paddleboards and kayaks are not part of the Night

in Venice parade.

National Publicity for Ocean City A Look Back at Ocean City

ighty years ago this week, Ocean City was featured in the national news thanks to Archie Harris and Billy Conn.

Harris set a world record discus toss, and Conn almost beat world champion Joe Louis. Harris grew up in Ocean City, while Conn who grew up in Pittsburgh vacationed in Ocean City.

“HARRIS SHATTERS DISCUS STANDARD; Toss of 174 Feet 8 ¾ Inches in N.C.A.A. Meet on Coast Breaks World Record” was the headline in the June 21, 1941 New York Times. The article reported, “Giant Archie Harris, great Negro athlete from the University of Indiana, cloaked himself in international glory today bettering the world record in the discus throw at the National Collegiate Athletic Association track and field championship. He sent the platter sailing 174 feet 8 ¾ inches.”

“LOUIS, NEAR DEFEAT, STOPS CONN IN THE 13th AND RETAINS CROWN” was the headline on the front page of the June 19, 1941 New York Times. The article began, “Joe Louis still is world heavyweight champion, after his eighteenth defense of the title he won four years ago from Jim Braddock in Chicago.

“The famed fighter sank Billy Conn, former world light-heavyweight champion, with a depth-bomb in the thirteenth round battle before a crowd of 54,487 wildly excited fight fans, who paid $450,000 in the Polo Gounds last night.”

Both Harris and Conn received coverage in the June 30, 1941 Newsweek magazine. “The University of Indiana’s 50-point second place (University of Southern California won the N.C.A.A. championship) was partly due to strength in the distance events, but mostly to the efforts of Archie Harris. Though he placed second to Al Blozis of Georgetown in the shot put, Harris sailed the discus 174 feet 8 ¾ inches to better the world’s record by 6 ¼ inches.”

After reviewing the classic fight the article reported, “Louis collected $154,404 of the $451,743 gate and injured right wrist; Conn got $77,202

This dish is one of the simplest summer salads. It is a one-bowl recipe that travels well, making it a great choice for picnics or potluck barbecues, or as an easy make-ahead lunch.

Easy Broccoli Salad

Cook Time: 15 mins Ingredients ● 1 large head of broccoli, chopped ● 6 strips bacon, chopped ● 1/2 cup sesame seeds ● 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese ● 1 cup mayonnaise ● 1/2 cup sugar ● Salt and pepper to taste Instructions Wash and cut the broccoli into bite-sized pieces and drain well.

Moon Landing Moments Jeff's Journal

T

his week marks 52 years since man first landed on the moon. I remember where I was that night. I was 8 years old. My sister and I sat in our pajamas with our parents in front of our black and white Zenith console TV. I remember my parents allowing us to stay up late and emphasizing that we were witnessing history. If you were old enough back then, you probably remember where you were as well. I'm pretty sure my 8-year-old mind couldn't wrap itself around the importance of what we saw that night.

In the same way, you and I probably don't recognize the significance

of moments in our lives today. Our stories can be just as significant to those whose lives we touch. Just as I look back now with a better understanding of what took place when Neil Armstrong touched down on the moon, a look back at moments in each of our lives can reveal the impact we have on our world.

Don't overlook the significance of your own life and its ability to reach into the lives of others. Often when we reflect on lives like those of Neil Armstrong, we can become discouraged about our own life stories. Don't. In all the world, or the universe for that matter, there is only one you. Each of us has been created with a unique purpose in mind. We all have a story to tell, and a life to live. As you write a chapter in

your life story this week, be mindful of who's living that life alongside you.

Someday, you'll look back and read the pages of your life story and realize that moments we fail to recognize as significant today will mean the world or even (pardon the stretch) "the moon" to those whose lives we touch each day.

The Atlantic County 4-H Fair is back for its 72nd year

he 4-H fair is back with two days full of delicious fair foods, exciting performances, pie eating contests and so much more. Although it was canceled last summer due to the pandemic, this year, the members of the 4-H association and 4-H volunteers are thrilled to bring the annual tradition back to Atlantic County on August 6th and 7th.

The fair, which began in 1950, offers 4-H members the opportunity to celebrate and showcase what they have learned in their respective fields over the last year. The 4-H program takes a “learning by doing” approach in each of the offered programs.

Members are welcome to join from kindergarten through high school and can choose programs that fit their

interests.

Programs include nutrition, baton twirling, engineering, robotics, cooking, community service, physics, and more. With the help of adult volunteers, 4-H youth are given the resources to learn new trades and hobbies.

4-H members focus on building core values that include independence, belonging, mastery and generosity.

The yearly 4-H fair is their time to shine. The schedule is packed from top to bottom with family friendly e n te r t a i n m e n t .

Friday, August 6th kicks off the two-day event with a variety of horse shows, a car show, live DJ, and plenty of fair favorite foods.

On Saturday, guests are invited to participate in the traditional baby parade and pie eating contest along with a day full of demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Amusement rides will be open both days with $20 wristbands available for unlimited riding.

The event is free with $4 parking available on the fairgrounds. The 4-H fair is a chance for those curious about becoming 4-H members to explore the fairgrounds, speak with volunteers, and learn about available programs. Volunteers will

be scattered throughout the fairgrounds to answer questions or provide additional information about 4-H. 4-H is about more than the programs alone. The 4 H's represent "head, heart, hands, and health." Members pledge their HEADS to clearer thinking, their HEARTS to greater loyalty, their HANDS to larger service, and their HEALTH to better living.

It is these pillars of love, loyalty, and service that has made the 4-H club so highly regarded and the 4-H fair an anticipated South Jersey event for so many years.

Whether you come for the food or the rides, the entertainment or the service, come out for good old fashioned fair fun on August 6th and 7th.

The Atlantic County 4-H Fairgrounds are located at 3210 Route 50 in Mays Landing.

Not Your Mama’s Cobbler

Wine Time

et’s talk Cobblers – no, not your mama’s famous peach cobbler, but with just as much enticing deliciousness.

Cobbler is an umbrella term for a classic cocktail consisting of fortified wine or spirits, muddled fruit, and sugar served over crushed ice.

When I say “classic”, I mean it – we’re talking a drink that nearly pre-dates straws. If you’ve ever tried to sip the end of a drink from a cup filled with ice, you’ll immediately understand why straws were a crucial part of the Cobbler trend; without one, you’d be shaking ice and drink all down your chin while trying to savor the last half of your cocktail. Straws were such a new concept in the early 1800’s that when bar-goers were served their newfangled Cobbler drinks with a reed protruding from the glass, they were absolutely shocked and delighted. In fact, Cobblers showcased another recent development of the era: readily available ice!

The Cobbler is named for the “cobbles” (essentially ice chips), that it’s served over. To create your own Cobbler cocktail, ideal for poolside or porch sipping, you can simply insert your favorite flavors into the formula below. Follow this guide and you’ll find the possibilities are mouthwateringly endless. ● A generous handful of fresh fruit and herbs ● Fortified wine (such as port or sherry) ● A spoonful or two of simple syrup or sugar ● A squeeze of lemon, lime, or other citrus ● Crushed ice

Muddle the fruit, herbs, citrus, and sugar in the bottom of a pint glass (muddling is simply the act of smashing up fruit and herbs to release all the flavors). Fill the glass to the tippy-top with crushed ice. If you don’t have crushed, whatever ice you have will work just fine. Pour your choice of fortified wine over the ice, filling the glass. Stir, pushing the wine down and pulling the fruit up through the ice with a spoon. Pop a straw in it, and enjoy!

Remember, you’re totally in charge here, so taste and alter your one-of-akind recipe to your heart’s content. If you like it sweeter, be generous with the sugar. If you don’t like it so sugary, hold back on the sugar and opt for a less cloying wine as the base.

Count Backwards to Extend Your Growing Season

hen it comes to planting vegetables, herbs, and flowers, most gardeners eagerly wait for the last frost of the season. That’s when the growing season really explodes, and you can plant seeds directly in the ground. As the summer heats up, tomatoes, cucumbers, and basil thrive, but cool-season vegetables like peas, lettuce, and kale begin to wave the white flag of surrender. Yanking these veggies that have succumbed to the heat frees up prime real estate in the garden. But the window of opportunity is narrow, since we know that dreaded first frost date is approaching.

I often find myself asking Siri (on my smartphone) to count backwards from the first predicted frost to see what extra crops I can sneak into the garden before the window closes.

Most seed packets will list the approximate maturity date for each plant. By counting backwards from the last frost date in your area, you can decide if you still have time to plant those bonus vegetables. For instance, if you would like to try growing bush beans, which take about 50-55 days to produce, count back 55 days from your first expected frost date. In our area, (according to farmer’s almanac) the first frost could be approximately October 20. Counting backwards would mean you should get those seeds in the ground well before August 26 to reap a harvest. Keep in mind that the timing stated on seed packets usually starts after the seeds have germinated, which can take a few days to a week. Most seeds will germinate more quickly by soaking them overnight, and you could buy yourself a couple of days.

In addition to counting back from the first frost date, you may choose a target date to harvest a crop. Wouldn’t it be fun to carve Jack-o’-lanterns from pumpkins you have grown in your own garden? Pumpkins generally take 90120 days to mature from seed. If you would like to grow your own pumpkins in time for Halloween, you’d better get planting today, and choose varieties that are fast growers.

How Comedy Connects Us All

I

love comedy. I love to watch it, write it, and even perform it occasionally. There's something viscerally satisfying about the release that a good laugh can offer us all. I also believe that comedy can

offer everyone more than just laughter though. Comedy is about comedians connecting with their audience, being unafraid to share embarrassing or shameful stories, and often pointing out some greater trend or truth in society. I admire how comedy reminds all of us of the importance of connection, of being bold (perhaps even unashamed), and of noticing the truth around us.

Comedy needs a connection to work. Comedians need to connect with their audience, and their jokes need to connect with something in our lives.

That connection is essential for its ex-

istence. Without that connection, that ability to empathize and understand one another, it simply doesn’t work. Likewise, we all need connection in our lives in order to thrive. Whether we’re connecting to family or friends, we have to reach out to one another in community and empathy. Just like how connection can be a deciding factor in whether a comedy performance succeeds or flops, connection can also be key to our lives.

Think about when a joke doesn’t land, or when it’s not your kind of humor. Sure, comedy is subjective and we may have different tastes, but what’s really lacking is a connection between you and the premise being offered up.

No amount of cleverness, crassness, or cuteness can substitute for that connection. It’s not necessarily that we don’t like certain jokes. Just some jokes fail to hit us in that deeper place of understanding. Nothing beats that deep satisfaction, and equally deep laughter, that arises when we “get” it.

However, what is it we’re getting?

In other words, what is the thing we’re connecting over? Oddly enough, even though it’s cloaked in laughter, what we’re often addressing and acknowledging is shame.

Good writing allows us to connect to shame, the unspoken and unsaid things we often keep in the dark. A good joke takes it one step further, offering us a chance to hold up the shameful thing together and laugh at it. It brings it out into the light, where we can see it for what it is. Joking about shameful or embarrassing things takes away its power. Shame only has power when we keep it in the dark and lack the courage or conviction to speak our truth.

So it turns out laughter is the best medicine. Not only because it releases important chemicals that fight the negative effects of stress, but also because it serves as a salve for the shame we all endure as humans. It becomes a pow-

erful antidote to animosity, bringing us together around our shared truths and our humanity.

The value of the comedian shouldn’t be understated. It is of great importance to our society. Comedians are, as Jordan Peterson puts it, “the canaries in the coal mine” of our culture, alerting us to the truths we often either can’t see or worse, choose to overlook, for the sake of safety or convenience.

When we choose to ignore or admonish these truths, sweeping our shadows under a collective rug of deception, we all end up missing out on that connection and the comfort that it can offer us. It makes it harder to see that we are not alone, and harder to find the confidence to then make bolder, braver steps forward.

So that’s why comedy is my favorite.

It is not only a fun night out, but it’s also a valuable part of our society. Comedy is a powerful tool to acknowledge, address, and move through the tough truths that affect us all. Importantly, comedy does this in a way that allows us to laugh with and at ourselves, and thus maintain the connection and compassion necessary to keep it all together.

So keep sharing. Keep courageously bringing what’s dark out into the light.

The more we know about ourselves, and in turn one another, the easier it becomes to live and laugh together.

You Can Now Recycle Those Yogurt Cups: ACUA Expands Accepted Recycling Materials to Include #5

T

he Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) is excited to announce that Atlantic County residents can place polypropylene, or #5 plastics, in their curbside recycling bins again. Polypropylene is commonly used in food packaging like single-use yogurt cups, iced coffee cups, and juice bottles.

The change is a result of an up-turn in recycling markets and our new partnership Mazza Recycling.

“We know residents want to recycle all they can so we’re happy to announce we can now accept #5 materials in the recycling stream,” said ACUA President Rick Dovey. “We are pleased that we have selected a prudent partner in handling Atlantic County’s recycling material.”

At the end of 2020, ACUA went out to bid to find a new facility to sort and market Atlantic County’s recycling material. The winning bid went to Mazza Recycling, which operates a brand-new sorting facility in Tinton Falls, NJ. The facility was one of four in the U.S. to be awarded a grant through the Recycling Partnership to improve the sorting and recovery of #5 plastics.

As you may remember, ACUA stopped

accepting many materials because of the downturn in international recycling markets back in 2018. As a result, we began accepting only #1 and #2 plastics, the “cream of the crop” plastics that manufacturers seek to reuse most.

During this time, recycling sorting facilities began upgrading equipment and investing in new technologies to improve the separation of materials. The industry also worked on spurring investment in domestic markets for recycling material and creating coalitions to expand the reuse of plastic feedstock.

Fast-forward to 2021, and those investments are finally paying off. Interest in using recycled material rather than raw material is gaining importance among manufacturers and there is continued interest from consumers to recycle more materials.

We remind residents to remain conscious of what and how they recycle.

Please empty out any liquids or food from your containers and only recycle items on our accepted items list. And, as always, we encourage you to REDUCE your use of throwaway items in the first place to decrease your impact on the environment.

Prime Beef: The Highest Steaks

A

few weeks ago I had three dear friends in the studio with me on my radio show, Joe’s Table for Two. Dan Fedele, who owned Fedele’s Restaurant in Margate; Doug Fraser, who has been in the hospitality and food business for many years, including owning the Atlantic City Country Club and the Flanders Hotel among others; and Al Shettig, whose family owned and operated Busch’s restaurant in Sea Isle City, which was famous for its She Crab Soup.

Among the many topics we covered the subject of prime beef came up, and we had quite a discussion about what is and isn’t prime. Anyone who knows me, or listens to my radio show knows, I’ve never met a steak I didn’t like, especially a dry-aged prime rib eye, Prime beef, the highest quality of beef rated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA),

is produced from young, well-fed cattle, has abundant marbling, and is mostly sold in restaurants and hotels. Most of the beef you find in supermarkets today is labelled Angus beef, the name of the breed of cattle which originated in Scotland, and is rated “choice” by the USDA – the second level in the USDA’s grading scale.

Not all Angus beef is prime beef. Real prime beef is a rarity – less than three percent of all selected, inspected and approved meat in the United States is rated prime.

And my favorite meat is not just prime beef, but dry-aged prime beef. But why age beef?

Well, dry or wet aging improves the rich flavor and makes beef more tender and therefore more delicious – and, of course, more expensive.

Dry aging is the process by which large cuts of beef are hung on racks in a meat locker where the temperatures are kept between 38 and 40° Fahrenheit, a specific humidity level is maintained, and air is constantly circulated. They are aged four to six

weeks before being trimmed and cut into steaks. There also is wet aging, where the meat is first cryovaced, a process where the meat is placed in special packaging and the air re-

moved by vacuum, and then aged several weeks.

The dry aging process requires high grade quality meat with a high fat content so that as the beef ages and moisture evaporates from the meat, the meat shrinks and the flavor becomes more concentrated in the muscle. The meat also becomes more tender because proteins in the muscle break down. It’s an expensive process due to the quality of meat

needed at the start, the large physical area required to hang the carcasses, the need to constantly monitor the temperature of the storage room, and the time involved. That’s why you find it mostly in steak houses or butcher shops, and occasionally at a highend grocery store.

I don’t recommend trying to dry age individual steaks at home, even though several well-known websites have instructions to do so. In the commercial process experts are constantly monitoring the beef to make sure there is no chance of spoilage or off-flavors. That’s because if the beef is not pulled or removed from the locker at the right time the surface mold develops, which is critical to the process, the flavor of the meat will be negatively affected.

My concern is that unlike the carefully monitored commercial lockers which meet stringent quality and safety guidelines, your refrigerator contains many different types of food with potentially higher bacteria counts in a non-controlled higher temperature setting.

In a home refrigerator the temperature changes every time you open the door, the humidity is high, there is no air circulation, there may be some spoiled item in the frig which could contaminate the steak, and the chance of your having spoiled meat which will make you sick is very high. So, please enjoy your dry aged steaks at a great steak house, or cook at home those you purchase from a reputable butcher or grocery store.

And, here's the way I cook steaks at Mama Mia’s Restaurante and at home: Buy the best quality steak you can afford, season it with kosher salt and pepper, and brush with melted butter. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat (or on the grill) until the pan is nice and hot. Sear the steak on one side until a beautiful crust develops, turn, repeat on the second side, and cook to your desired temperature. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Play in the Bay at Island Aqua Park

wners of Island Aqua Park, Tom Tyce and Maggie Day, have been in the watersports business for over 30 years. Their most recent venture, Island Aqua Park, is an extension of their Stone Harbor based hub, Island Water Sports.

The Margate location, open 7 days per week throughout the summer, opened July 4th, 2020. In the midst of the pandemic, they saw an opportunity to offer kids an escape from the quarantined year they had just faced. Opening a new business mid-pandemic carried its own risk but as owner Maggie Day explains, “it didn’t matter if it was a great financial year for us in 2020. It was a good thing for the kids.”

As it turns out, Island Aqua Park was exactly what local families needed last summer. The combination of

sunlight, salt water, and safety precautions offered an overdue outdoor escape that families at the shore could feel good about.

Those families are coming back for more fun on the water this summer. This year, Island Aqua Park was able to open its doors as soon as school let out, welcoming kids and adults of all ages a place to let loose and cool off.

Island Aqua Park is open all week, weather permitting. Safety precautions are taken on every level including fluctuating business hours that are based around the safest times to be on the water. With 23 certified lifeguards on staff, life jackets for everyone, and hours based on the tide, Island Aqua Park is an adventure-seeking safe space for the family.

In addition to the care taken to protect guests, the staff at Island Aqua Park is careful to protect the sea life that calls the bay “home.”

Due to its proximity to the ocean life below, food and drink are not permitted at the park, rather guests are encouraged to visit neighboring Margate restaurants to complete their shore adventure.

come to partake in the wet and wild fun. Sessions are offered in one or two-hour segments with plenty of space to play for adventure seekers of all levels. The park is equipped with safe spaces to dismount in various locations and lifeguards on every corner to assist when necessary.

Tommy Tyce, Maggie Day, and their family consider it their life’s mission to provide family fun at the Jersey Shore. Their tagline, “from our family to yours,” is proudly posted on their website and they stand by that mantra in everything that they do.

ince 2020 I have been curating events and art shows for several galleries in South Jersey.

I am currently working with The Arts Garage in Atlantic City, Quirky Turky Art Studios and Gallery in Clementon, NJ and The LaBelle Art Gallery in Voorhees Township.

As 2021 comes to a close I will soon be announcing new partnerships with other galleries, venues and businesses that want to bring art and excitement to their atmosphere.

One of the best parts of my job is coming across new poets, actors, film makers, DJ’s, and creators of all kinds to showcase. Earlier this month I was invited to a great outdoor poetry reading and “Boom" I was struck by a brand new visual artist. This artist fed off the energy of the music, poetry and crowd, then captured it in one amazing image. Her colors, lines and strokes were like lightning in a bottle or let’s say a canvas. Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me pride and pleasure to introduce you to visual artist Yelixza Figueroa.

Ray- Where are you from?

Yelixza-Galloway/Atlantic City NJ Ray- Did you study or are you self taught?

Yelixza-I am self taught and never went to school or studied Art. I discovered I could draw in 2016 Ray- What do you want people to see in your paintings?

Yelixza-I want people to see themselves in my paintings. Help women to heal from their trauma and love themselves in such a way that nothing can break or stop them. I want my art to help men and women embrace their natural beauty. Inspire people to get creative and never give up on yourself.

Ray- Do you have any artists that influence you?

Yes I have several artists that influence and inspire me daily. There's Brionya James, Donice Blood worth Jr., Ija Monet, Kiran Vardiel, Rahiem Milton, Adrienne Muse, Stina Leah, Dooga Art, Hala Preudhomme, Chuck Styles and many more. This list is just my top 10.

When we return to the office; how to help our dogs transition to being alone ●

s our pre-pandemic work routines and other activities commence again, your dog may be left confused, lonely and wondering why everyone is rushing out the door instead of spending time at home. Below are some tips to help pets with the transition and to prevent separation anxiety and other unwanted behaviors from developing. ● Keep your pup happy while you work by providing him/her with physical exercise and a meal beforehand. ● If you know you will be resuming a rigid schedule, adopt that schedule now while you’re still at home.

Give your pet ‘practice’ with short periods of alone time every day.

For example, go for a walk or do some yard work while leaving him in the house so the transition to being left behind is not so abrupt and stressful. Gradually increase the time you’re away from home to prepare your pet for longer stretches of time.

Your dog may be used to midday play sessions or walks. Ramping down that exercise and interaction due to schedule changes could leave them with pent up energy.

Switch to playtimes that fit your new schedule to help your dog adjust.

Rotate your dog’s toys to keep them relatively novel and interesting. Interactive toys or healthy chews can keep your dog busy while you’re gone. If he/she has a favorite toy or loves peanut butter for example, give this treat only when you are leaving. Thus the dog associates his favorite with you leaving.

When you come home, do not make a big deal of it. Come in, say hello to the dog, then head right outside for his yard time.

This is called distraction behavior therapy. He/she is so excited to see you, but you make it "no big deal" that you are home. It's the same when you leave. Be more business-like vs pampering.

Leave on soothing music or the TV for auditory or visual stimulation that can help keep your dog entertained when you’re not at home.

Bringing a Taste of Napa to Margate The Margate Business Association to host a wine tasting June 23rd

ark your calendars: the Margate Wine Tasting is back, and this time with a new outdoor venue.

Come out and join the excitement at one of Margate's premier events on Friday, July 23rd from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the new Edgemar Circle. Tickets are $65 per person. A portion of the proceeds from this even helps fund opportunities and needs of local children.

The Wine Tasting event significantly helps to support the charitable initiatives of the MBA. The Margate Business Association’s Daniel and Maria Walters Scholarship Program has awarded over $115,000 in scholarships since the inception of the program. The scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who have attended Margate City schools and are continuing their education. The event also supports the MBA’S Children Fund

in conjunction with the Margate schools which anonymously provides warm clothing, school supplies, food, summer camp for children in need, toys and more for local children. The Fund contributes to the Kids for Toys Program, Toys for Tots and many other charities.

When guests arrive, they will be given a tasting glass which can be used at any of the wine tasting stations. In addition to wine tastings, guests can enjoy food trucks, beer, music, a live auction, and more. Steve & Cookies will have bento boxes, and Bocca will be bringing its famous tomato pie. A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

The Bungling Bay Boys Senior Moments

I

n the mid 1960’s, I was in my teens living in Margate. Before the luxurious bayfront homes existed, there were marshes and at low tide, a beach. My friends and I would explore these beaches for whatever treasures we might find. Usually, it was not more than lost fishing riggings and dipsies. One day, on a beach along Amherst Avenue in lower Margate we came across an abandoned wooden lifeguard boat. It looked perfectly seaworthy except for a fist sized hole above the water line.

In our best Huckleberry Finn/Tom Sawyer impersonation, we found two pieces of wood that would suffice as paddles and tugged the partially floating boat into the water. We cautiously tested its seaworthiness in the lagoon and when satisfied, we used the “paddles” and pushed out into the Intracoastal Waterway. Our exploration of the back bays began or so we thought.

Being out on the bay on our own we felt adventurous, independent. As powerboats passed us by, their wakes splashed in through the hole in the hull and began

collecting at the bottom. As more water collected, the boat got lower in the water.

As it got lower in the water, more wake splashed in. Still feeling confident and masters of our own fate, we decided it prudent to begin paddling towards shore.

At this point, we were leaving the bars on Amherst Avenue known as the Barbary Coast, behind us. The outgoing tide had caught us and as hard as we leaned into the planks of wood used as paddles, we were losing ground and more water was splashing into the boat. I knew that these boats were pretty much unsinkable but when I saw we were heading towards the Longport bridge, as they say, stuff began to get real.

Past the bridge was the inlet, then the ocean and I knew that we were really going to be in dire straits unless we could do something to turn these events around. I remember, I thought how angry my mother would be if I perished in such a nonsensical manner in a craft designed for saving lives.

Now, my friend and I started waving our “paddles” at passing boats and yelling “HELP” not even realizing we could not be heard over the sound of their engines. We see this all the time in movies and laugh at the stupidity. Stranded boaters yelling at

passing freighters to be rescued but that is what one is compelled to do.

Finally, just before passing under the bridge a boater started coming towards us and we waved even more frantically.

Water was filling the boat and we were exhausted. The boater pulled alongside and after assessing our dilemma, took the opportunity to admonish us for our recklessness. He threw us a rope and towed us to the nearest marina. We made our way back to our bikes and rode home with very little said between us.

I made it home in time for dinner and sat down at the table. My mother brought in the dinner and curtly asked what had

I done that afternoon to come home so sunburned and dirty. I told her that my friend and I were just playing down by the bay. She told me I was not getting a thing to eat until I went into the bathroom and cleaned myself up. It was good to be home.

Beloved Dentist Retires After 45 Years

D

r. George Novasack’s commitment to excellence along with his unapologetic humor has kept his dental patients smiling for 45 years. On July 5th, he took his final walk out of his office as he stepped into his life’s next chapter: retirement!

Dr. Novasack grew up in Atlantic County, graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, and returned back to the shore in 1976 to open his practice, Novasack Family Dentist. With an emphasis on the word, “family,” Dr. Novasack went on to serve three generations of dental patients.

Over the last 45 years, Dr. Novasack has watched children grow up and become parents, grieved the loss of some of his patients, and built friendships with every family that has walked through his door. It is those

friendships that Dr. Novasack says he will miss the most.

When he opened his doors in 1976, a young Novasack knew his life was about to change, though not necessarily in the way he expected. When a young lady by the name of Nancy inquired about becoming

Dr. Novasack’s first dental assistant, he quickly hired her and later asked her to be his wife. George and Nancy Novasack ran the family dentist office together for four decades while raising a family of their own. They share two children and six beautiful grandchildren.

from father to son has been seamless, as Dr. Mark brings the same personalized care to the office that Dr. George has offered for so long. It’s that personalized level of care that Dr. George Novasack explains has welcomed back patients year after year.

On July 5th as Dr. Novasack exited the office for his last time, he was met with an unexpected surprise. His family along with friends and colleagues were in attendance to celebrate his retirement. Balloons, hugs, and an honorary speech from his son, Mark, made his last day one for the record books. The icing on the cake for Dr. Novasack was a “full circle” moment when Mark asked him to check his teeth one last time.

“You try hard. You try to keep doing the right thing,” explains Dr. Novasack in reference to being a loving father and committed dentist. “I can not emphasize how great our practice has been in terms of the patient friendships. I could invite them all over for dinner any night of the week.”

As Dr. Mark Novasack takes over the family practice, Dr. George and Nancy are looking forward to a life of travel, car shows, and more time with their grandchildren. Their six grandchildren are enjoying the extra quality time filled with “mom-moms’ coffee” (warmed up milk before bedtime) and pop-pop’s jokes.

“We’re not going to write everything on a calendar anymore. We plan to just play life by ear and try to stay forever young,” shares Dr. Novasack.

YELP Returns -A Horror Parody Film Camp

ow in its fifth season, YELP: A Horror Parody Film Camp, is back with YELP Returns. Led by Kevin McCafferty, the film camp hosts South Jersey children from ages 8-18 in a series of family friendly horror movie parodies such as A Naptime on Elm Street and I Know What You Did Last Halloween.

Year after year, theatre-loving youth from around Atlantic County commit four hours of their Saturday afternoons to YELP film camp. Students have the opportunity to practice scripts, perfect their acting techniques, work as a team, and learn about film production. They work together to act, film, and edit original movies.

Some students participate in YELP for the love of acting, while others find joy in their love of horror films. However they get involved, students come back for more YELP horror camp every Fall, finding a home and a family in their fellow cast members.

This year, things look a little different for YELP participants. In the beginning years, the camp was based out of Cygnus Creative Arts Center, however when the center was closed during 2020, Kevin brought the experience to the streets. McCafferty found a variety of rehearsal and production locations for the camp that culminated in a private, socially distant showing of the films for camp participants.

This Fall, YELP is back with titles such as A Quieter Place and Children of the Candy Corn along with an original script written by McCafferty.

Continuing to operate independently of Cygnus, YELP camp begins this September with rehearsals at JustBe Farm in Mays Landing.

“The last two years have really been a struggle but I have kids who look forward to this every year as a creative outlet.” explains McCafferty.

working relentlessly to bring this season of YELP to life. Students can

look forward to a variety of rehearsal and film locations including film nights at Castaway Cove and Scullville Terror In The Junkyard. The donated rehearsal space from several local farms has taken this one-of-a-kind film camp outside of traditional theatre walls and into the community, which McCafferty expresses deep gratitude for.

The 2021 season of YELP will be celebrated with a public screening

on October 30th at 7:00pm. The film will be open to the public with a $5 cover at the PAL complex on Ridge Avenue in Egg Harbor Township.

othing can explain or replace that joyous feeling you get around Christmas time. It is a time of year that brings happiness to many. The only problem? It only happens once a year! It is also usually freezing cold in New Jersey, and as someone whose favorite season is summer, I am not opposed to the idea of a warmer Christmas. Moms Vibe: Don't Forget Your Oxygen Mask

f you have ever taken a child on an airplane, you know the routine. The flight attendants go through the safety drills while half of the people on the plane pay attention and the rest of them are distracted by their phones or only half listening.

The flight attendants then specifically seek out each mother or caregiver on the plane and personally remind them that in case of emergency, to place their oxygen mask first.

The flight captain has already included this instruction in his or her long safety speech so why do we need this personal reminder?

We’ve heard the analogy used a thousand times before but I think for the same reason the flight attendants

look us in the eyes to make sure we heard the flight captain is why we need constant reminders to take care of ourselves.

As mothers and caregivers, it is in our nature to give and give until our proverbial cup is so empty that we have no choice to refill. We are currently in the dog days of summer after a year of homeschool, virtual school, hybrid or whatever version of chaos your household maintained last school year.

During a regular year, this is about the time that mothers begin feeling ready for September to roll around again but this year, that feeling is exacerbated. We are beyond exhausted and for most of us, the entire household is craving routine and normalcy, which can not seem to come soon enough.

This is a friendly flight attendant reminder that now is not the time to forget your oxygen mask. Now, more than ever, this is your time to take moments to breathe, recenter, and keep it together.

packed lunches, assemblies and so on. So, right now, I want to encourage you to slow down and let the stress go as we finish out this last leg of what has been the craziest school year of our lifetime.

Let Go of Guilt

Mom guilt is a real thing.

Either we feel bad for being away from our kids too long on a mom - break or we worry about yelling too much. Whatever the source of that feeling is, remember that you are doing your absolute best.

Raising humans is no easy task.

There are no handbooks, there is no guide, only your love and life experiences to get you through. The saying goes “if you wonder whether or not you’re a good mom, you already are.”

Take that to heart and just remember that you deserve to breathe too. You deserve breaks and coffee dates with friends, long baths and evening walks. You are allowed to feel frustrated sometimes as well.

That’s a normal human emotion along with anger, overwhelm, sadness and of course happiness and joy. As whole humans, we are allowed to feel all of it and feeling anger or overwhelm does not make us bad mothers. It simply makes us human mothers. Take it all in stride.

Breathe

Phrases we hear regularly usually have overlooked meaning behind them. The saying “I haven’t had a chance to take a breath” reminds us that we often go through our days without stopping to focus on our breathing. Looking inward for even a moment throughout the day, noticing the breath fill your lungs and focusing on the exhale can give us just the amount of peace we need to keep going.

Try these breathing exercises throughout the day for a little private moment to yourself. Nobody even has to know that you’re shifting your focus for a moment. It is a private little escape in your mind.

1: Imagine a square. On the inhale, trace the square up the left side.

On the exhale, continue the square

across the top. Inhale on your way down the right side and exhale as you complete the square. Repeat as many times as necessary to feel your energy calming.

2: Elevator breathing exercise. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths. Imagine yourself at the top of an elevator on the 20th floor.

Press the button for the ground level and breathe as you imagine slowly traveling back down to Level 1.

Allow stress and anxiety to float away as you descend.

While these breathing techniques are helpful for us as mothers, they are also extremely valuable tools to teach our children, as they experience anxiety and overwhelm as well. The square technique is a great way for kids to calm anxious energy and can be used together as a family.

Ask For Help

There is no shame in not being able to do it all. I read something on Instagram that said, “We were not meant to do anything 24/7. We are allowed to need breaks. That includes motherhood.”

Whether you ask a spouse, a parent, or a friend, there is freedom in speaking up for yourself and your needs. If you need a break from the tribe, chances are they need a break from you too. Take it, don’t feel bad about it, and enjoy a moment to just be YOU. The you that you were before you became a mother. She’s in there, waiting for a little love and attention. Call on your village and ask for help, if even for a couple of hours to take a nap, get your nails done, or do something that revives your soul.

We are superheroes, mommas!

But even superheroes need to grab their oxygen mask and put it on high for a little bit. This is your invitation to do that as many times as necessary.

You are still one heck of a mother!

“The Champion Golfer of the Year” Sports & Entertainment

s I write this, the final major of the professional golf season is in the books. Ever since my Uncle Henry was kind enough to invite me on golfing trips to Scotland (1998) and Ireland (2002), I always look forward to what most Americans refer to as the “British Open." The folks in Scotland and the U.K. have that stiff upper lip you know, so they prefer to call it “The Open Championship," but either way, after a one year absence, it was great to finally wake up early and watch some links-style golf from Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, England.

Since I last wrote, the Flyers made a major trade in advance of the NHL expansion draft. They also hired a new assistant coach as well. The Phillies continue to pick up series wins, and are almost forcing the team to be “buyers” at the trade deadline rather than “sellers." Plus, they signed their top draft pick pretty quickly. A Sixers is a quarter of a century old, but no one seems to want to get him a birthday cake! The Eagles are now less than a week away from the start of their training camp. Finally, on the local front, I continue to put the peg in the ground and hit up some local golf courses as part of an upcoming feature here in Shore Local.

From entertainment, I joined a crowd of about 800 others to watch a big-time comedian perform. Plus, my girlfriend and I checked out a new crime drama on Peacock network that you MUST watch if you can. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● This week I’ll start with the Flyers for once as they really stole the headlines last weekend when they traded for All-Star defenseman Ryan Ellis from Nashville. Ellis is a 10-year veteran and one of the NHL's more skilled and reliable defensemen. The Flyers traded two players who were once thought to be cornerstones to get him as they say goodbye to Nolan Patrick and Phil Myers. ● First, a word about Ellis, as this is the established blue-liner that the Flyers were missing all last season when Matt Niskanen unexpectedly retired. Ellis is a right-handed shot

too, so he will instantly go on the top pairing with Ivan Provorov and should provide immediate help. Over a ten-year career, the 30-year-old Ellis has scored 75 goals and is known as an “offensive-minded” defenseman. He should pair perfectly with Provorov, who is a prototypical “stayat-home” defender. Plus, Ellis is only two-years in to an eight-year extension he signed with Nashville, so he won’t be a free agent until 2027, and has a reasonable cap hit of $6.25 million.

My only concern is about his health. Ellis only played in 35 games last season because of a shoulder issue and he is 30-yearsold. However, to me, this was EXACTLY the first step of what hopefully are more by Chuck Fletcher to fix some of the Flyers problems and give Alain Vigneault the players he needs to win on a nightly basis.

Now to the players they gave up, starting with Nolan Patrick. He was the #2 overall pick in the 2017 draft, hampered by migraines and post-concussion effects, still just 22, he has yet to fulfill the expectations that accompanied his entrance to the NHL. After managing just 61 points over 145 games in his first two seasons with the Flyers, Patrick missed the entire ’19-20 season, only to score just four goals in 52 games in ’20-21. Upon acquiring Patrick, the Predators immediately traded him to the Vegas Golden Knights for center Cody Glass, who was the No. 6 pick in that 2017 draft.

And that to me speaks VOLUMES about Patrick’s value. Immensely talented, yet so far, talent unfulfilled. Good on Fletcher and the Flyers for getting some value for him and moving on from what appears to be a disappointing pick.

Now, as far as Phil Myers goes, the 24-year-old looked like a rising star by the end of the ’19-20 season…and remember, he was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2015…but he took a major step backward last season, when he was only able to score one goal in 44 games and was a minus-10 with his play on the ice. If I was giving a grade to this trade, I’d give it an “A-minus”, with the only thing keeping it from being higher is concerns about the health of Ellis and his age. Fingers crossed!

And one last Flyers item as the NHL expansion draft is all set for Wednesday July 21st. The Flyers, somewhat surprisingly, left winger James Van Reimsdyk unprotected.

The other exposed names include Shayne Gostisbehere, Jake Voracek, Justin Braun and Robert Hagg. One of those five guys will become a member of the new NHL franchise, the Seattle Kraken. My money is on “Ghost”, but perhaps that’s wishful thinking! By the time I write next week, we all will know more.

So, let’s move on to baseball then, as the Phillies have certainly played their way into “buyers” and not “sellers” as the July 30th trade deadline fast approaches. Let’s start with the good, as the Phillies have won 10 of their last 13 as I write this, and won both games against the Marlins last Sunday to take their 3rd consecutive series win of 3 or more games for the first time since 2019.

As I write this, the Phillies are just two games back of the first-place Mets in the N.L. East, and appear to have as good a chance as anyone to win the division. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has told NBC’s John Clark that the team will not be “sellers” at the deadline. However, here comes the bad.

Just exactly what do the Phillies have to offer other teams as they are hoping to acquire a late-inning reliever, or a back-end starting pitcher, or even Marlins centerfielder Starling Marte? After nine years without reaching the playoffs, the Phillies are intently watching as the Mets had to put star shortstop Francisco Lindor and best in baseball ace Jacob DeGrom on the injured list last weekend. So, you could say that the N.L. East is “there for the taking."

Like most playoff contenders, they could use another late-inning reliever. A back-end starting pitcher (Cole Hamels?) would come in handy. The Marlins are reportedly bracing to trade Starling Marte, who would look good in center field and atop the Phillies’ batting order. However, getting any of those things means giving up something, and the Phillies don’t have much trade capital. Last month, Bryce Harper accurately described the farm system as “kind of depleted,” and the payroll is only about $7 million shy of the $210 million luxury-tax threshold.

One last Phillies item as the club quickly signed top pick Andrew Painter to a contract. Painter was the 13th overall selection by the Phillies in the 2021 MLB Draft and is the second consecutive high school pitcher drafted by the Phillies in the first round, joining Mick Abel from 2020. The club also signed 10 other selections from the draft as hopefully these “future” Phillies don’t take too long to work their way through the system and join the big league club.

Before that game takes place, there are two big things to note. One, is that Harold Carmichael finally gets to go into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio on Saturday, August 7th. As a lifelong Eagles fan and someone who knows Carmichael casually, I’m THRILLED for the big guy. Two, is that the Eagles are only going to hold TWO public practices during training camp, and the first of those is on Sunday August 8th.

I just love the fact that I can wake up early and watch golf from “across the pond”, and then go play 9-holes if I want to. Remember, the Open Championship (or as we call it “The British Open”) was the only major not played in 2020.

Major props to the 24-year-old Morikawa as he closed with a bogey-free, 4-under 66 at Royal St. George's and won The Open in his debut last Sunday, becoming the first player to capture two different majors on the first attempt. I felt bad that Phil Mickelson couldn’t make the weekend.

I was rooting for Jordan Spieth to win a second Claret Jug. However, I especially felt bad for Louis Oosthizen, who once again wilted under final round pressure. He was runner-up this year at the PGA Championship and the U.S.

Locally, I am continuing to tee it up quite a bit lately as after I wrote last week, I played another 9 holes with Sean Fawcett at Pinelands Golf Club in Hammonton. This was my first trip to the course and I found the 18-hole track nestled on the outskirts of Wharton State Forest to be quite enjoyable! Listen, if you haven’t played there, or haven’t been there in years, it’s time to go back and check it out.

Book a tee time at www. pinelandsgolfclub.com As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as my girlfriend’s son Michael and I were part of a big audience at the Borgata Event Center last Saturday night to see comedian Bert Kreischer perform as part of his “Berty Boy Relapse Tour."

We hit the early show, and it was Kreischer’s first appearance on stage in front of a big audience since the pandemic, so we got a lot of NEW material and jokes. The two warm-up comics were hilarious as well, yes, Kreischer closed with his “machine” story, which if you’ve never heard it, is worth the price of admission alone.

Lastly, my girlfriend Susan and I stumbled across the American crime drama miniseries “Dr. Death” on Peacock network and quickly watched all eight episodes over a two day period. Loosely based on the real-life story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, the premise for the series is this. “An arrogant, sinister doctor treats his Hippo-

cratic Oath about the same way he treats his patients. As his malignant narcissism and sociopathy (antisocial personality disorder) escalates, his fellow surgeons and a young assistant district attorney set out to stop him.” Actor Joshua Jackson is excellent in the lead role, and major supporting actors Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater are outstanding as well. Morgan Streep’s daughter Grace Gummer is phenomenal as troubled physician’s assistant Kim Morgan, while AnnaSophia Robb is really good too. My one complaint is that even though Peacock is a streaming service, they still put too many commercials in there for my liking. But hey, that’s the name of the game these days, right? If you like crime dramas, this one is a MUST watch!

I’ll close by letting you know that I’m headed on vacation to Omaha, Nebraska, so next week I’ll write from there. It’s my first trip on a plane and outside the Delaware Valley since the pandemic, so fingers crossed that I stay safe and healthy! ou already know that exercise is good for your body. But did you know it can also boost your mood, improve your sleep, and help you deal with depression, anxiety, stress, and more? Exercise is not just about aerobic capacity, endurance, strength and muscle size. It has mental health benefits also.

Exercise does improve your physical health and your figure, trims your waistline, and even adds years to your life. But that’s not what motivates most people to stay active.

Surprisingly, most people who exercise regularly do so because it gives them a sense of well being. They feel good about themselves and it gives them a feeling of control over their lives. That’s powerful! The confidence booster alone is second to none. It's

difficult to feel good about yourself if you aren’t taking care of yourself.

Exercise can make you feel more energetic throughout the day and sleep better at night.

When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which are chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits and make you feel good.

Exercising can also serve as a great distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression. I never heard anyone negatively self talk during a workout.

Exercise is natural and effective.

It relieves tension and stress, boosts physical and mental energy, and enhances your wellbeing as a whole.

Try to notice the sensation of your feet hitting the ground, while walking or running or the rhythm of your breathing. Don't forget the plethora of sweat or the feeling of the wind

and sun on your skin. Being mindful of all these sensations is also powerful.

Do you get it yet? Exercise is power, the power to do good for one's self, the power to lift weights, the power to be healthy, the power to enhance your golden years, the power to feel good about yourself, the power to feel confident.

This is where it’s at! Focus on your body and how it feels as you exercise and you’ll not only improve your physical condition but you will also interrupt the flow of constant worries running through your head. It’s a celebration of doing what’s good for the mind, body and soul.

ainland Regional High School class of 1969 held a three day celebration in honor of the fact they are turning 70 years old this year.

The festivities began at the

Somers Point Beach concert on Friday night, July 16th and was followed by a beverage or two at classmate, Walt Gregory's bar and restaurant.

Saturday was the main event, a party to beat all parties! The festivities included a dunk tank, cornhole and

horseshoes. DJ, Joe Gorgo played all the hits of their era.

The class charged $1.00 for 3 balls at the dunk tank and had a 50/50. The proceeds were donated to Last Salute, a full service military Funeral Honor Guard serving Atlan-

tic County.

They ended their night singing "Happy Birthday" to one another and enjoying a piece of cake.

On Sunday they met at a local Diner for breakfast before saying so long until next year.

Value of a Funeral Service, Part 4

n my last few columns, I explained several benefits of holding a funeral service. One I would like to highlight this week is how the funeral services provide a social support system for friends and family and allows for the acknowledgement of the loss within the community. I have had families come into the funeral home and they say to me I don’t want a service because I can’t handle hearing “I’m sorry for you loss” over and over again. To which I usually respond “, I understand but you may want to consider you will be doing that anyway but just over a longer period of time and in numerous places.

When you have a service you normally have an announcement (obituary)

notifying the community about the death but also announcing the service in the obituary. This gives set hours as to when people can come to express their condolences at the funeral home, church or any other venue. If you don’t have services you will be at the dry cleaners and someone asks “how is your husband, I heard he was ill” and you have to explain he died and you take that persons condolences. Then you are at the super market and the same thing happens and you take that persons condolences, you’re out to eat and it happens again and you take that persons condolences, and again. The point I am making is that the funeral service helps to reduce and maybe even elimate these situations because you are giving the community an opportunity to express their concern and support at a designated place and time.

Meet Felicia

Meet Lexi

Lexi is a sweet young girl who is looking for a family to call her own.

She is a playful 6-month-old mixed breed who weighs 35 lbs. She loves to play and take walks and would love to snuggle with you after your long day at the office.

Felicia is a beautiful, young, longhaired orange cat who came to us as a feral kitten. She still has a slight fear of people and would require some work and patience to help her overcome. She will allow you to touch her, it just takes a very gentle approach.

Felicia does very well with the other cats in our outside enclosure and can often be found curled up with a group of other cats, staying warm and enjoying their company so she could be a nice companion for another cat, however, we recommend a home without children.

Questions Everyone Selling a Home Should Be Asking Real Estate Matters

hen you are getting ready to put your home on the market, you may be lying awake at night wondering about the logistics and the financial ramifications of your decision.

Here are ten questions that you should ask an agent in order to set your mind at ease and feel more prepared for the road to the closing table.

• How will you determine what price we should charge for my home?

A real estate agent will look at recent comparable sales in your area as well as your current competition among active listings. That will give you a good baseline potential valuation for your home.

• What improvements should I make to optimize my home’s resale value?

An agent will conduct a thorough walkthrough of your home and look for any needed repairs or extremely out-of-date fixtures or finishes that might deter a buyer. Beyond that, you’ll discuss updates that can add value while offering a solid return on investment.

• Is bigger always better when it comes to pre-sale home improvements?

Actually, no. According to the National Association of Realtors® (NAR), some of the most cost-effective improvements with the highest ROI include those items related to curb appeal. A new front door or a fresh coat of paint can make a huge difference in the way that the home is perceived. In addition, interventions like deep cleaning or decluttering cost little or nothing, yet can have a big impact on potential buyers.

Don’t forget the outdoors, which offers some of the most affordable improvements with the highest ROI. • What if I don’t want to make any improvements to my home before listing it?

For a variety of reasons, you may be unable or unwilling to make changes or improvements to your home, or you may not be in a financial position to do so.

You are certainly not required to make any improvements and an agent can list your property for sale as-is, indicating to potential buyers that you do not intend to negotiate on repairs or damages.

Keep in mind that an as-is sale can affect your ability to get top dollar for your home, even if it is in good overall condition. In addition, many mortgage lenders require certain baseline repairs to major systems, so if there are plumbing, electrical, or structural issues, you may be required to make needed repairs in order to get your home sold.

• We’ve agreed on a price and What happens next?

The buyers will bring in a home inspector to check out the home and recommend any needed repairs or improvements. The inspector may identify a major problem and the buyers may ask for a more in-depth inspection. The inspector may identify only minimal issues and the process may proceed.

• The buyers submitted a list of requested repairs. Can I say no?

You are free to say no to any repairs that are requested from your buyers with the understanding that they may choose to walk away from the deal based on their home inspection contingency. Discuss with an agent whether or not you should make some, all, or none of the requested repairs, whether you would be willing to provide a credit at closing toward the repair costs, or whether you should put the home back on the market.

Remember that if the repairs requested are legitimate, the next home inspector will likely identify them as well. Ask a real estate agent how the identification of needed repairs will affect your disclosure and the price of your listing going forward if you decide to put the home back on the market.

• We did some damage during the move-out. What will happen now?

Accidents happen and it is not uncommon for there to be scuffs on the flooring or paint after the movers have finished clearing out the home. If you notice that this has occurred, or if your buyers see damage during their final walkthrough, the closing can still occur. In most cases, you can either provide additional funds at closing to cover the damage or you can prepay a reliable contractor or repair professional to make the needed repairs on your behalf.
