When I went paddleboarding with my daughter, her favorite part was when I fell in! We tend to put so much pressure on ourselves to make it perfect or at least seem perfect. But the truth is perfect is an illusion and we are all really just doing the best we can with what we got. Many of the best parts of summer are still to come. estecunk Axe Throwing on Baltic Avenue in Atlantic City offers a new twist on traditional summer time fun. Originally opened in 2019, Westecunk Axe Throwing shares the same block with Little Water Distillery and The Seed Brewery. The name, “Westecunk" comes from the Lenni-Lenape Native American language and loosely translates to “Summer place.” Billy Hanson, owner of Westecunk Axe Throwing, grew up on the Westecunk Creek where Lenni-Lenape Native Americans would come seeking abundance during the summer. When Hanson made the decision to launch a new business in 2019, he honored the new "Summer place" with

the Westecunk name. Hanson was introduced to axe throwing several years prior when axe throwing locations began popping up across the state. As a gift for his brother on his 30th birthday, he built a backyard axe throwing game. The game was such a hit that friends began asking Hanson to build home-based axe throwing games for their gatherings. One thing led to the next and Hanson was onto something! He began operating a mobile, fully enclosed, axe throwing game at vendor fairs and events as he looked for a brick and mortar location to settle into. In 2019, Hanson opened the doors to Westecunk Axe Throwing, which had been a two-year labor of love. The industrial building that had once been used as electrical storage for casino construction would ultimately become a BYOB axe throwing experience. At Westecunk Axe Throwing, guests have the opportunity to experience a one-of-a-kind group outing. From a date night for two to groups of 50 people, Westecunk Axe Throwing offers a space for everyone to have fun.

Each session begins with a safety lesson from Billy Hanson or one of his team members. The host aims to find out the goal of the guests so they can lead the group accordingly. There are a variety of games to choose from and a few house rules to be followed to ensure safety. The majority of guests come in for their first time feeling a little reserved or nervous to experience something new. Billy and his team are dedicated to giving them an experience that will have them leaving empowered and coming back for more. Tropical Storm Elsa Packed A Punch

ropical Storm Elsa is long gone, so we can finally "let it go" when it comes to worrying about any additional impacts from an early in the season tropical threat. Windswept torrential downpours resulted in 1 to 3 inches of rain throughout South Jersey, a good soaking but not enough to cause any major flooding concerns. Elsa was also a quick hitter, lasting less than 8 hours with most of the action overnight while we slept, or perhaps tried to as the wind and rain kept you up. That quick movement didn't allow a long enough period of onshore winds to create tidal flooding issues, not to mention that the worst part of the storm conveniently struck at low tide. So while Elsa did pack a punch in some minds, it makes sense that others in South Jersey either slept through the storm, or weren't all that

impressed with what Elsa had to offer. Even my friend, meteorologist Tom Lamaine, texted me "May all storms that pass this close to the Jersey shore leave with such relatively minimal effects." Now there are always exceptions to the rule, and there certainly were with Elsa as well. When any tropical system interacts with land, there is typically the potential for brief tornadoes to spin up as tropical rain bands pivot inland off of the ocean. And that's the reason you may have been suddenly awoken by alerts on your cell phone for tornado warnings late Thursday night. As a side bar, one of the most valuable weather benefits of technology is the ability to send automatic alerts to all cell phones when tornado (or flash flood) warnings are issued, no matter what time of day. Before this option was available, there was no effective way at alerting those sleeping of potential life-threatening weather. Well, there is the NOAA weather radio, which most meteorologists and mariners few others have but few others even know exist, but I digress. There are two methods for issuing a tornado warning. The first is the more straightforward one, when a tornado is spotted and confirmed to be on the ground, usually by law enforcement or

a storm spotter network. Of course, we don't have quite the extensive network that they have in tornado alley, given how rare tornadoes are here. Not to mention that these warnings were issued at night, when spotting a tornado is even more difficult. The other way revolves around our weather radars, which can actually "x-ray" a thunderstorm and analyze if a given thunderstorm has rotation up in the cloud and if so, determine how strong that rotation is. When a tornado warning is issued based on radar, there is no confirmation that a twister is on the ground. Rather, it is possible that a tornado may have touched down, or could spin up at any time. This second method is how almost all tornado warnings, what few we have, are issued in South Jersey. We've all heard the line "if a tree falls in the forest and there is no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?" Similarly, if a tornado touches down at night and there is no one around to see it, did it actually touch down? Well, there's a way to find out, and it involves a team of meteorologists that survey any areas of concentrated damage that result from a thunderstorm's winds and any "possible" tornado. Sure enough, such a team was on the ground in South Jersey the day after Elsa strike, surveying three areas where damage was focused and tornadoes were believed to have been the culprit. One was in Little Egg Harbor, one in Woodbine, and one on the causeway between Somers Point and Longport. So what do they look for? It's actu-

ally quite interesting, at least it is to a meteorologist who has tagged along on some of these. Essentially, they analyze the scope of the damage, look at what was impacted, and perhaps most importantly, the direction the damage came from. Let's say a storm hits a clump of trees and all the trees are blown over in the same direction. The determination would be straight-line winds. If a few trees were knocked over and facing south, a few others east, and several others to the west, that would indicate rotational damage and a tornado was the likely culprit. Findings from Elsa's damage determined that two tornadoes did indeed touch down that Thursday night, one in Little Egg Harbor with winds of 80mph and one in Woodbine with winds of 100mph. On the Route 152 causeway, 7 wooden power poles snapped due to the wind, but all fell in the same direction, hence no tornado. Yet the winds were still determined to be 100mph, which stresses that whether 100mph winds blow in a circle or a straight line, they can be destructive and deadly. Thankfully, they were only the former and not the latter this time. Hurricane season runs through November 30. So let's hope an early season storm in July is all we see this year, and not a sign of things to come when the tropics really heat up in September. Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

What to Make with Locally-Sourced Blueberries? Blueberry Simple Syrup is my goto recipe during blueberry season. This quick and easy syrup can be used in so many different ways and adds the perfect summer taste to your favorite dishes and drinks.

Blueberry Simple Syrup Prep Time: 5 mins | Cook Time: 20-30 mins Ingredients ● 2 cups fresh blueberries ● 1 cup sugar ● 1 cup water ● 1 teaspoon vanilla ● 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice Instructions ● Put the blueberries, sugar and water into a small saucepan and bring to a boil. ● Add vanilla and lemon juice and continue to boil, stirring often, until syrup is thickened and coats the back of a spoon. ● Using a fine mesh strainer, strain mixture into a heat-proof bowl. Press down on the blueberries to fully extract all of the syrup from the mixture. ● Transfer mixture to a mason jar or syrup bottle and store in the refrigerator for up to a month. Add blueberry simple syrup to your favorite cocktail or mocktail, as a topping for your pancakes, ice cream or dessert and it can also be added to your favorite marinades and salad dressings. OC's Summer Olympic Connection

riday, July 23, 2021, the Opening Ceremony of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad will be held in Tokyo. Even though the Tokyo Games are taking place in the summer of 2021, they will referred to as the 2020 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo organizers agreed that the Games would retain all of the 2020 branding, which means all signage, television graphics, souvenirs, apparel-even the medals won by the athletes-will say 'Tokyo 2020." A global television audience of up to four billion viewers is expected to

witness the beginning of the Games, which trace their roots to 776 8. C. As in most of the Games since 1920, the Ocean City Beach Patrol will be represented. The OCBP Olympic tradition began in 1920 with John 8. Kelly. Other Ocean City Olympians include: Augustus Goetz (1928), Charles Kieffer (1932), Archie Harris (1940, but Olympic Games were not held), John B. Kelly Jr. (1948, 1952, 1956, 1960), Tom Aretz (1968, 1972), John Pescatore (1988, 1992), Peter Wright (1996), Wolfgang Wigo (1996, 2000, 2004 ), and Stelphen "Sid" Cassidy (2008, 2012, 2016, 2020). Cassidy, a member of the OCBP Hall of Fame, was instrumental in getting the 1 OK Marathon Swim as an Olympic event. He started the race at the inaugural swim in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China; he was a referee at the 10K swim in the 2012 Games in London; he was head referee in the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro; and this summer he will be head referee in Tokyo.

Ocean City Getting Ready for Night in Venice and Baby Parade

cean City’s Night in Venice celebration returns this year and promises a spectacular evening on the bay. The city’s premier summer event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, July 24. Registration is open to all boat and bayfront home owners who want to participate in this year’s festivities. The optional theme will be “Honoring Our Heroes,” a salute to all those who helped us get through the year. Participants are also encouraged to use last year’s planned “Olympics” theme. A fireworks display will light up the bay and cap off the evening. The boat parade and decorated bayfront home contest provide a chance to be part of the highlight of the summer season in Ocean City. Thousands of spectators line the bayfront, and thousands more attend private parties at homes along the route from the Ocean City-Longport Bridge to Tennessee Avenue. Entries for boats and homes will be taken online at www.ocnj.us/niv below or by calling 609-399-6111. All

entrants receive a commemorative mug, and boat owners also receive a complimentary photo of their boat in the parade. Deadline for registration is noon Wednesday, July 21. Raptors Return to Keep Seagulls at Bay

ince the beginning of summer, there’s been a noticeable absence in the number of seagulls on the Ocean City boardwalk. No pesky birds swooping down for a slice of pizza, french fries or funnel cake. This is all thanks to the help of seven trained raptors. For up to twelve hours a day, these birds of prey fly high and low over the boardwalk, warding away opportunistic gulls from beachgoers and visitors in downtown Ocean City, their location being tracked by GPS. East Coast Falcons, the company behind the program, is utilizing seven raptors; four falcons, two hawks and an owl. One of the birds you might find flying high over Ocean City is the Harris hawk, whose wingspan is up to 46 inches and has an overall height of 2 feet. They have dark plumage, white tail feathers and reddish shoulders.

Children come together to make a big impact

ur Children Making Change recently kicked off their 13th season. The non-profit organization was founded by local mom Laura

Dulac, when she noticed that there were not a lot of volunteer opportunities for her kids to participate in. In response, she formed Our Children Making Change, a way for children of all ages to contribute to charities in their communities through fundraising. It is an opportunity for children who may be too young to volunteer to become active participants in their community through work that is just right for them. Over the years, thousands of children have participated, benefitting many charities. To date, Our Children

Prim and Proper Primitives When Prim and Proper Primitives opened their shop in Stainton’s in November 2020, GiAnna Weller was not new to business. The home décor shop had been in operation since 2013 in Womelsdorf, PA, and just celebrated its first anniversary at its new location in Historic Smithville. Taking a small spot at Stainton’s then expanding was, according to GiAnna, one of the best business decisions she’s ever made. The shop’s motto, “Welcome Home”, shows in the décor they offer. H a n d m a d e barnwood signs fill their shop with rustic appeal and are complemented by countryhome accessories and gifts. Hand-stitched dolls speak of a simpler time and remind us of being cozy in our living rooms with the family. This is exactly the feel GiAnna is going for when selecting the items she sells. If you ask her why this feel appeals to her so much, she’ll tell you, “We spend so much time at home building memories and raising our families so it’s a passion of mine.”

Those handmade barnwood signs are extremely popular at Prim and Proper Primitives, not only because of their high quality, but also because you can find them for every season and holiday. You can even get one that says Ocean City, NJ! GiAnna’s favorite items though are the hand-poured candles, made with high grade oils which provide a pure long burn and aroma. “They are heavenly!” she says. GiAnna has always had a head for entrepreneurship as she comes from two business owner parents. The success of her business was simply inevitable. Though she was born in South Jersey, GiAnna was raised in Pennsylvania, in the “heart of farmland”, which has guided many of her design choices for her shops. But as her business success was inevitable, so was the pull of the Jersey Shore for her, so she and her family recently relocated to South Jersey.

A few of the non-profits chosen to be a recipient this year are The Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City, Reeds Organic Farm and Animal Sanctuary, Egg Harbor Township Police Athletic League, Heart of Surfing and the Humane Society of Ocean City. Each participant is asked to raise $100 during the summer. How do the kids raise $100? Lots of ways. The kids choose how. "Some of their favorite ways are by selling lemonade,

organizing events such as bike-athons and scavenger hunts. We have kids teaching yoga at Grace & Glory Yoga in Northfield, making bracelets and bead art, selling painted seashells, selling coffee and baked goods. Some link up with small businesses such as Maui Joe’s selling shaved ice and Jessie’s of Linwood, selling baked goods and drinks," shares team leader Jaclyn Todd. Steve's Trains & Toys Steve Lattanzio comes from a generation of children who adored model trains, setting up towns and stations and tracks. So, it comes as no surprise that what started in 1987 as something to keep him occupied when he eventually retired, soon turned into a business, and thus Steve’s Trains and Toys was born. When the

business moved into Stainton’s nearly two years ago it was already chugging along successfully in other similar shops and markets and Steve had been selling at train and toy shows around New Jersey. People had come to know Steve and trust not only his integrity, but his knowledge of his products and the research he had done on all of them as well. Plus, he’s always loved talking about the history of trains. Shoppers can find various model train items in Steve’s shop, from tiny trees, lights, and people for set-ups to large engines and cars

Ingredients ● 1/3 cup almonds , slithered ● 4 cups organic baby spinach ● 3/4 cup organic ripe strawberries, quartered ● 1 tsp. Sherry vinegar ● 1 tsp. Dijon mustard ● 3 tbsp. Time For an Elephant-Sized Celebration as Lucy Turns 140 By: Valerie Lonkart

ust how famous is Lucy the Elephant? He has his very own postcard during the opening sequence of National Lampoon's Vacation, is a registered National Historic Landmark, and is America's oldest roadside attraction, even older than the Statue of Liberty. To celebrate his 140th Birthday, the Save the Lucy Committee is having a "National Landmark's Summer Vacation at Lucy" celebration on Saturday, July 17th from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Before we dive into the festivities, no, the he is not a typo. According to lucytheelephant.org, "the Elephant was originally named 'Elephant Bazaar' when James V. Lafferty, Jr. built the structure in 1881. A future owner of the elephant, Sophia Gertzen, changed the name to 'Lucy' and it stuck — but Lucy is not a girl as the name suggests! Since Lucy has very prominent tusks, 'she' has to be a 'he.' So, Lucy is actually a boy!" This reporter learned something new today. "After last year's scaled down

Little’s Dairy Bar in Egg Harbor Twp has been my family’s go to place since I was a kid. All the kids would pile into the car screaming for ice cream. We’d pull up to the giant raisin and knew ice cream wasn’t too far away. My parents would argue that Little’s Dairy Bar has the creamiest ice cream in the area. I know I enjoy all the variety of sundaes from smores inspired sundaes to the banana brownie fudge creation in a cup. Before we leave, I ask for a frozen chocolate banana. Food and Wine Pairings

ne of the most common questions I get in my line of work is about food and wine pairings. This is such a nuanced topic with intense amounts of science to back up the answers (all of which I'm happy to geek out about on request!) but I strive to make it as approachable as possible. Let's tackle it, one food group, at a time. What better place to begin in the summer in a shore town than with seafood? Typically, you'll want to pair fish with white or rose wines. Reds tend to be richer and more tannic - both elements that will overwhelm the delicate flavors and textures of most fish. There are exceptions to every rule of course, but this is a good starting point when in doubt. If you're going out and are unsure exactly what type of seafood you'll be enjoying, I recommend a "safe" choice white wine: something that is not too extreme in any way, with moderate acidity and just a touch of residual sugar. The residual sugar is important because the cardinal rule of pairings is that the food must not ever be sweeter than the wine. If it is, your wine will taste horrifically bitter by comparison. Don't worry if you're not a sweet wine lover; wines with a small amount of sugar are not overtly sweet when well-balanced with acidity and structure. I recommend a wine made from Chenin Blanc grapes. You'll find options like this from South Africa, such as Balance ($10.99), but others from France under regional names. One of my favorites is the Sauvion Vouvray ($17.99). If you'll be doing shellfish specifically, you'll want something with a nice line of what we call "minerality" - that's the dominant flavor in most clams, oysters, etc. Sancerre is especially lovely with these types of foods, hailing from the Sancerre region of France where it is frequently paired with local shellfish. Karine Luaverjat ($25.99) is an old favorite, but Mellot Moussiere Sancerre has quickly won my heart ($31.99). If you're a raw bar

enthusiast, you could never go wrong with a muscadet either. Try Bonnet Blanc ($16.99) next time you plan on having some oysters, and you'll never look back. The type of fish can totally impact the decision, especially with things like Salmon, which are much fattier and meatier than other fishes. Salmon even opens up the door for the red wines I told you to avoid (like I said, rules are meant to be broken!) – but still, stick to very light, low tannin varietals like Beaujolais or Grolleau (like Montgilet, $13.99).

HOW the fish is prepared can also make a difference. If it’s a scampi or a similarly richly-sauced dish, you could easily do a heavier white, like Chardonnay. Around the Island Swim Senior Moments By Charles P. Eberson

n August 1, the “Around the Island Swim” will be held at the Jim Whelan Open Water Festival. The event is the latest rendition of a 22.75 marathon swim around Absecon Island that began as a bet between two lifeguards in 1953 and until 2005 morphed into a professional swim with each swimmer having a lifeguard boat with two rowers and a trainer accompanying them around the island; no easy feat in itself. Those races featured such international swimming personalities as Christof Wandratsch, Michael Drozd, Claudio Plit, Stephane Lecat as well as local, Samantha Chabotar (Elko.) I am sure more about this year’s race will be published as the race date approaches but I would like to share our family’s experience as the Directors of Housing for the FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation) sanctioned Around the Island Swim. My wife and I were avid fans of the

Swim, so in 1997 when we were approached to take over the housing of seventeen international professional swimmers, our exuberance got the better of us and we agreed to do so. We were given a list of potential families, reached out to friends and managed to find host families for all the swimmers. Host families were responsible to house, feed and transport swimmers to training, meetings, social gatherings and most of all, get them to the race on time. Our swimmer was Gabriel Chaillou from Argentina. “Gabby” came in 3rd the year before, so we knew we had a contender. His English

was quite limited and our Spanish was nonexistent but somehow, we understood each other. We put the TV on in the evening for a little relaxation but struggled to find something without a lot of speaking. Without thinking, we selected “Shark Week” which elicited a strong spillage of unintelligible verbiage which could only be interpreted as a negative response. I don’t know what we were thinking of choosing such a show when Gabe was going to spend at least eight hours in our surrounding waters. Searching the channels, Gabe blurted out “Moe,

Larry, Curly” and instantly the Three Stooges closed the cultural gap. We got Gabe to the start at The Flying Cloud in Gardner’s Basin early in the morning and followed him around the island cheering from bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway and from various house parties along the route. It was quite the festive atmosphere. Gabe came in 2nd in a time of 9:47:03. The winner’s time was 9:29:12. It took almost 12 hours for the last place swimmer to finish. Gabriel came back to us the next year with his “trainer” aka, friend Alexis. Gabe continued to return year after year with Alexis and his girlfriend and later his wife, Karina for a total of nine years with our family. Karina was an accomplished swimmer in her own right as a participant on the Italian national swim team. Our son was nine years old and on our local swim team when Gabe first arrived. It was a treat to have him swim with the professional swimmers when they all trained together. Gabe, Karina and Alexis continued to stay with us every year for a total of the nine years Gabe competed and they became our international family. When they were living in Torino, Italy for a few years, we visited them as a side trip from our friends in France. Gabe and Karina moved out of their one bedroom apartment and stayed with friends while letting us stay at their place. We still stay in touch via emails and Facetime calls. They now live near the ocean in Argentina with a 14 year old daughter and 12 year old son who are also competent swimmers, of course. Former players from the boys’ and girls’ Mainland Regional High School’s Soccer teams gathered on the steamy July evening to remember and honor their former teammate and friend. The standout soccer player and her teammates were on their way to a charity soccer tournament at St. Augustine Prep in Buena, when their car was struck in a tragic accident. Aisling died on September 3, 2014, as a result of the accident. The Mainland community came together after the tragedy to show their love for Aisling and support of her parents, Hugh and

s I write this, the Stanley Cup playoffs are over. The MLB All-Star Game is about to take place. The NBA Finals are well underway, and the Open Championship is about to take place “across the pond”. Some of these are happening at the time they normally would happen. Other events are later than normal. But no matter what, it’s an interesting time for sports for sure! Since I last wrote, the Phillies finished up a solid road trip and go into the all-star break on a high note. Plus, a new crop of future Phillies are drafted. The Sixers have a new C.E.O. and one of their biggest stars gets ridiculed at the ESPY’s. An Eagles position coach sees his son get a pretty significant honor. The Flyers turn t-shirts into money for a cause that’s near and dear to their heart. Meanwhile, on the local front, Chase Petty hears his name called at the MLB Amateur Draft in Denver

Chase Petty - drafted by Minnesota / MLB Network on Day One. Finally, I’m starting to play a lot more golf, and visited two local courses as part of an upcoming feature here in Shore Local. From entertainment, I was sad to see a beloved actor from the show “Night Court” has passed. As well as a wrestling legend from when it was still called the W.W.F. Plus, I watched a documentary about one of my favorite rock star lead singers of all-time, who tragically left us way too soon. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts:

I’ll start with the Phillies they went 5-2 on a road trip that took them to Chicago and Boston prior to the all-star break. They hit the break exactly at .500 with a 4444 record, and only three and a half games behind the Mets in the N.L. East. I think that’s pretty darn good, all things considered! Let’s start at Wrigley Field where the Phillies took a series from the Cubs in Chicago for the first time since August of 2006. They did so by breaking out the bats as in just four games they hit 21 singles, 10 doubles, 13 home runs and scored 39 total runs. Hey, that’s an offensive EXPLOSION! Then it was on to historic Fenway Park in Boston where they won two out of three, although the Sunday wrap up game was not what was expected. Aaron Nola was SUPPOSED to start the final game of the series against former Phillie Nick Pivetta, but Alec Bohm tested

positive for COVID-19, and three other players were deemed to be in “close contact”, including Nola, so it became a “bullpen game”. The Phils won it 5-4, but the real hero is Ranger Suarez, who recorded a seven-out save to send the Phillies into the break on a high note. The 25-year-old lefty has come back from injuries, COVID-19, and visa issues in spring training to post a 0.77 ERA in 21 appearances since getting called up from triple A. Suárez picked up the Phillies’ first seven-out save in a one-run game since Don Carman on June 19, 1985. One other guy I want to highlight is utility infielder Ronald Torreyes. Stepping in for Bohm, Torreyes had three hits in the victory. Torreyes has started 31 of the last 46 games and gone 31-for-115 (.270) with three homers and 18 RBIs in those starts while playing solid defense.

A few final baseball items before I move on as the Phillies drafted 18-year-old right handed pitcher Andrew Painter from Calvary Christian High School in Florida with the 13th pick overall in the first round of the MLB Draft last Sunday night. It was the second straight year the Phillies spent their first-round pick on a highschool pitcher, and you can almost see them salivating at the chance to pair Painter with Mick Abel, the right-hander they selected last summer with the No. 15 pick. Painter is armed with a high-90s fastball and struck out more than half the batters he faced this season while posting a 0.31 ERA in 45 1/2 innings. 13 picks later, the Minnesota Twins make Somers Point native and Mainland alum Chase Petty’s dreams come true as they picked him at #26 overall. Afterwards, Petty revealed that he’s become friendly with Mike Trout and that the Millville native gave him his number so they can stay in touch. Trout even texted Petty on draft night to wish him good luck and also be a sounding board for Petty so he kind of knew what he was in for. In addition, Petty was scheduled to have dinner on Monday night with Fernando Tatis, Jr. and Manny Machado as they all share the same agent. Lofty times indeed…! Best of luck Chase Petty… we can all only hope you stay as humble as Mike Trout has..! My last baseball item involves the Home Run Derby. Now maybe it’s because it was in the high altitude of Denver but what took place at Coors Field on Monday night was FUN to watch…! But first, a quick story...In 1998, I was working at KDUH-TV in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and I covered the Rockies from afar. I had applied for press credentials for the All-Star Game that year, but then I got a job in Lincoln at a different station. However, my pal Redo Celli still wanted to go to the game & such. I had gotten him a credential too, so that’s how he and my other friend Leon Hurley ended up with press passes to the 1998 All-Star Game at Coors Field. They still laugh about how everyone else had legitimate equipment and credentials and they were there with those little Kodak throw-away cameras! Sorry, I get distracted sometimes. Now, as for this year’s home run derby, everyone thought that Shohei Ohtani was a given to win. But a funny thing happened on the way to his sure victory. The Mets Pete Alonso came out on fire and

hit 35 home runs in the first round to set a new record. Ohtani went to, essentially, double overtime and a swing-off with Washington’s Juan Soto and was eliminated in the first round! In the end, Alonso beat out Baltimore’s Trey Mancini to become the third back-to-back home run derby champ in the event’s history. Alonso finished with 74 total home runs and joins Ken Griffey Junior and Yoenis Cespedes in winning consecutive titles. In basketball, Milwaukee beat Phoenix at home 120-100 in Game 3 to get the NBA Finals to 2-1 as I write this. I picked the Suns in

six, and I’m not backing off that prediction, even though Phoenix looked pretty darn good in Games 1 and 2. Meanwhile, the Sixers have a new C.E.O. as Thaddeus “Tad” Brown takes over as the new C.E.O. of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, whose properties include the 76ers, the New Jersey Devils and the Prudential Center in Newark. Brown has spent the last 15 years as the C.E.O. of the Houston Rockets, so he’ll be reunited with Daryl Morey, the Sixers President of Basketball Operations. The NBA draft is just a few weeks away on Thursday

Less than two weeks after being sent home for the summer, Simmons dropped $17.5 million on a 12,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom mansion outside of Los Angeles that came with an indoor Bonsai tree. His neighbors are Kanye West and Paul George. Then, last week, Simmons and Maya Jama, the British TV and radio personality, were caught by cameras kissing in the stands at Wimbledon. Oh yeah, this is going to play over REALLY well by the Sixers faithful! There are some who say “give the guy a break”. To that I say, “Do your job and we’ll stop complaining!” In football, things are pretty quiet with the Eagles as they continue to count down the days until training camp begins on Sunday August 8th. drafted a right-handed pitcher out of Vanderbilt named Kumar Rocker at No. 10. Not ringing any bells? Well, Rocker is the son of Eagles new defensive line coach Tracy Rocker, who was hired as a part of Nick Sirianni’s coaching staff this offseason. From hockey, Flyers Charities are giving a $50,000 grant to Dr. Margaret Chou, an associate professor and cancer researcher at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia since 2019. The money was raised by the Flyers selling “Oskar Strong” T-shirts at home games as well as other fundraising activities following Lindblom’s diagnosis of Ewing’s sarcoma in December 2019. This one makes me smile because Lindblohm’s cancer is in remission and also because Flyers fans truly are the most GENEROUS fans out there. Good stuff Flyers and Flyers fans! In golf, the Open Championship (or as we call it “The British Open”) was the only major not played in 2020. Its back this year at a quirky location at Royal St. George’s in England. Fans will be back too, but all is not normal as there are stiff protocols in place and already some COVID positive players having to withdraw. I’ll still watch though, as the wild mounding

Locally, I’ve been teeing it up quite a bit lately as I played nine holes in the morning on Monday with Sean Fawcett at Heritage Links and then another nine holes at Vineyard Golf in the afternoon. es soon, but let me get a jump on things by telling you what a hidden gem Heritage Links is. If you’ve never played it, it’s a quaint nine-hole course at 1375 Route 9 in Ocean View. What was once a family farm is now a fun test of golf where you really don’t need to pull the driver out that much. When we played, we made it around nine holes in just 90 minutes! Best known for his role as “Mac” on the NBC sitcom “Night Court”, Robinson had a 50-year career where he appeared in movies such as “Secret Santa,” “The River,” “Set It Off,” “Antwone Fisher,” “Jackson,” “Even Money” and “Miss Lettie and Me,” and TV series including “Buffalo Bill,” “Home Improvement,” “Hart of Dixie,” “NCIS” and “The Guestbook.”. I especially liked him as a blind, upstairs neighbor to Bonnie & Christy in the TV show “Mom” recently.

Despite the name, these easy-to-grow perennials look like pink (not purple) daisies with prickly centers. In the spring, the leaves of the dormant plant will begin to emerge from the ground. By summer, you will have beautiful flowers that last until fall. Once established, purple coneflowers are drought resistant. They will flower best in a well-drained, fullsun location in the garden, making them perfect for our hot summers and sandy South Jersey soil. Though I enjoy their colorful flowers all summer, one of my favorite things about purple coneflowers happens once their bloom season has come to a

close. As the petals fall, the spiky seed head dries out, giving it the look of thistle. You can see why the name of this plant comes from the Greek word for hedgehog or sea urchin (echinos). Not only do the interesting seed heads provide interest in the garden and allow the plant to self-seed, but American Goldfinches (New Jersey’s state bird) will visit your garden to eat the seeds. I love watching these colorful yellow and black birds balancing on the dried seed heads while pulling at the seeds with their beaks. Even late in the season, as most of the flowers are finished, you will see some lingering blooms among the seed heads. The combination of colors from the flowers plus the vibrant yellow and black birds makes a lovely, col-

black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) and other flowers in the rudbeckia family. Personally, I prefer the colors of echinacea that also come in shades of red, orange, yellow, and white. Razzmatazz is a fun variety of purple echinacea with showy double flowers that look like pom poms in a purple-magenta color. One of my favorite flowers to plant near purple coneflower is Russian sage. The soft billowy lilac-colored flowers of Russian sage provide a dreamy backdrop for the sturdy pink and thistle-like echinacea, making a lovely combination. Chill Out: Summer Recipes to Stay Cool By Sarah Fertsch

t’s hot. You may feel like you’re living inside a giant convection oven with all of this heat. We are all desperate for ways to beat the heat, so jump in a pool, turn on a fan, or wear a flowy sundress, and try these cool summer recipes:

Watermelon Gazpacho

This cold soup will refresh you and make for a unique lunch dish to share with family or friends. It’s so easy, too! Ingredients: ● 6 cups of seedless watermelon ● 1 cucumber ● 1 jalapeno pepper ● 1 large tomato ● ½ cup of lemon juice ● ½ cup of lime juice ● 2 tbsp of red wine vinegar ● Salt and pepper to taste ● Crumbled feta as a garnish Blend watermelon and pour into a large bowl. Peel cucumber and chop roughly. Chop pepper and remove seeds. Chop tomato and remove seeds. Blend cucumber, pepper, and tomato and stir into the watermelon mixture. Add lemon and lime juice, salt and pepper, and red wine vinegar. Stir thoroughly, and strain into another large bowl. Cover and refrigerate for three hours. Serve chilled, and top with crumbled feta. Yum!

Caprese Salad

This classic salad will make you feel like you’ve arrived in the Italian countryside. Make sure to use the freshest, most local ingredients! Ingredients: ● 1 quart of mozzarella balls ● 2 pints of baby tomatoes ● 2 cups of chopped basil leaves ● ¼ cup of balsamic vinegar ● 2 tbsp of olive oil ● 2 tbsp of lemon juice ● Salt and pepper to taste Wash baby tomatoes and pour in a large bowl. Chop basil leaves and add to the large bowl. Combine with mozzarella balls, vinegar, olive oil, lemon

Cucumber Mint Vodka Cocktail

Sip this delicious mixed drink and taste summer relaxation! The cucumber-mint flavors will quench your thirst and beat the summer heat.

Ingredients:

1 cucumber, sliced thinly 1 cup of mint leaves ● 1 cup of vodka ● 2 cups of lemonade ● 1 cup of sparkling water Wash and slice cucumber, and roughly chop mint leaves. In a large pitcher, place cucumber slices and mint leaves (leave some cucumber slices for garnish). Combine with vodka, lemonade, and sparkling water. Stir thoroughly, and serve drinks over ice with a slice of cucumber placed on the rim of the glass as a garnish. So refreshing! ●

When you taste the nutty sweetness of this ice cream, you’ll never buy ice cream from the grocery store again. And you don’t need an ice cream machine to make this dessert! Ingredients: ● 3 cups of heavy cream ● 1 can of condensed milk ● ½ jar of Nutella ● ½ tsp of vanilla extract ● ½ tsp of salt Whip heavy cream and salt until stiff peaks form. Add condensed milk, Nutella and vanilla, stirring carefully to not break peaks. Pour mixture into a freezer-safe container and place in the freezer for 18-24 hours. Scoop and treat yourself!

Haddon-based food truck and catering company, Just Fork It, will be serving from their outstanding food truck menu which features classics including an Italian Porker Slider and Truffle Brussel Sprouts, all using the freshest ingredients. They also create specials for each event, and I am sure that they have something special planned for this festival that will surely WOW the crowds. With the festival taking place in the peak of summer, you will want to beat the heat with a shaved ice cup from Kona Ice of Haddonfield. This is not your typical shaved ice. One of their most recent featured flavors is the “Peace Love And PickeDillys”, made with dill pickles, shaved ice, cherry syrup, a sour shot, and Tajin seasoning. This is one you are going to need to try – sweet, salty, and refreshing. Now, for those of you who are still set on that pizza you were promised, Buon Viaggio Mobile Wood Fire Oven will be there spinning some of the most authentic Italian pizza you will find outside of Italy itself. Brigantine’s Beacon

he Brigantine Lighthouse was built in 1926 by the Island Development Real Estate Company to attract people to Brigantine Beach Island, the newly popular beach town nicknamed "the Twin Resort of Atlantic City". Their slogan was "come to the lighthouse". It was never an operating lighthouse but it did serve other purposes for the resort. In the 1930's the Brigantine Lighthouse became the town’s police station. The tiny building could accommodate the city’s few officers. If they had a call, they'd turn the light on which would alert officers to return to the station. The steel door of the holding cell is on display at the Historical Museum located just 100 yards away. The lighthouse also served as a gift shop and in the 70's was the original location of the Historical Museum.

Pass the Torch: Five Ways to Celebrate the 2021 Olympics By Sarah Fertsch

he summer games kick off on Friday, July 23rd, and now is the time to start planning how you and your crew will enjoy this unique time. Even though the Olympics will not be allowing in-person spectators, you can still have fun and join in on the festivities. Here are five ways to bring the Olympic spirit home:

Food Olympics

We all know that the Olympics are a worldwide competition between nations to be the best. Why should that be limited to athletic ability? Be your own participant and judge by making your own international food and deciding the best based on various categories: best dessert, spiciest, best soup, and easiest recipe. Cook arancini from Italy, oxtail stew from Jamaica, tamales from Mexico, fish and chips from England, ramen from Japan, or plantains from the Dominican Republic. Invite friends over, and let the feast begin!

Mini Olympic Games

Sweat with the stars, and coordinate games between families! Plan a 100 meter dash and see who is the fastest. Head to the local pool and practice the butterfly stroke. Can you do a cartwheel, or a flip? Set up a soccer game in the park. And don’t forget to include homemade medals! Who will be the Simone Biles of your neighborhood?

Play Fantasy Olympics

Before you watch the events, do a little research about athletes

and countries that excel at specific sports. Between your friends or family, create fantasy Olympic teams (recruiting either specific athletes or countries), and as you watch the games, score your fantasy team. Whoever has the most gold wins the gold!

Embrace Japanese Culture

Be like the athletes, and immerse yourself in Tokyo life! Try to make homemade California rolls and snack on seaweed. Watch anime or listen to Japanese music. Write haiku

f you've ever taken a trip to the beach you know it's not something you do with the short-term in mind. By that I mean, you pack the chairs, the sand buckets and shovels, the boogie boards, the sun tan lotion (cause you know you're gonna be there a while) and of course lunch and plenty of snacks. When you head to the beach, your intent is to "park it" and settle in for the long haul. It's fun, exhilarating, refreshing and relaxing all at the same time. I don't know about you, but for me when I'm lounging in my chair and close my eyes to catch a nap, I always wake up thinking I've been asleep longer than I have. There is something about the breeze, the crashing of the waves, the whole atmosphere that puts me in a peaceful slumber. You gotta love the beach. But at some point, it's time to pack up and leave. Personally, I've observed three LIFE LESSONS about leaving the beach. 1. Most of the time it takes some coaxing to get up the energy to leave. It's been a long day, no one wants to make the first move and everyone knows when you do decide to leave, there is work to be done. Gather the buckets and shovels, shake off the towels, gather the kids together. You know the routine. And after you've been sitting for a while, it usually takes one person to say, "Ok, let's get moving." And that person gets up and motivates everyone else to get moving. Whether it's in business or your personal relationships, it helps to have others beside you to encourage you and help pitch in.

2. Once you get packed up and begin your trek to the car, you realize there is always a straggler in the group. You know what I mean; the one child who's so tired he or she can't walk. Either you carry them until you get to the car or at the very least walk beside them, offering encouragement along the way. Sometimes when we make the decision that it's time to leave the comfort of the beach and get back to the work at hand, we have to realize that others on the team might just need us to lead them, encourage them, walk beside them until they see the goal (in the case of this analogy) the car, in sight. 3. When you leave the beach, it can be more than a little messy with the sand between your toes and the greasy lotion on your body. Actually, it may seem strange to you but one of my favorite things about going to the beach is getting back home, showered and all cleaned up. There is something about the refreshing feeling you have after a day at the ocean. What that means to you and me is the realization that a trip to the beach is important. It's not only important, it's essential to maintain balance in our lives. We need that time to relax and unwind. Because when we do take that time, our time back in the "real world" becomes that much more productive. There is a renewed energy and sense of excitement that comes with the experience. New Season of the Office: Five Ways to Make Returning to the Workplace Bearable Good Food is Your Friend.

t’s been 18 months. You’ve woken up late, traded in a blouse for a nightgown, and ran errands on your lunch break. Work was an abstract concept that led to a paycheck every two weeks. But now the party’s over. It’s time to sit in traffic, stretch out your slacks, make small talk with coworkers and spend eight hours away from bed. Sounds impossible, right? Well, here are five ways to help you transition back to the office painlessly:

Nothing makes a day better than delicious meals. Take a few minutes and prepare a delicious breakfast and lunch to look forward to during office lulls. I love making overnight oats or acai bowls for breakfast, overflowing with peanut butter, berries, nuts and cinnamon. For lunch, wrap up a meaty burrito or refreshing salad. And don’t forget coffee! Find a homemade cold brew recipe and pretend you stopped at Starbucks.

Dress Your Best.

We can’t wear sweatpant s anymore, so be sure to look fabulous for your 2021 office debut. Head to a consignment shop and pick up a flowy skirt or relaxed-fit button-down. Show off your summer style and leave your coworkers in awe.

Pump Up the Jams.

Before you head back to work, create a playlist to distract you from the drudgery of fluorescent lighting and office supplies. Decide between a moody, ethereal vibe or fastpaced, electronic dance party. My dad loves to listen to old jazz and swing music while he works because it makes him feel classy and productive. What music makes work feel fun for you?

Make Mornings Memorable. Wake up early, because nothing is worse than rushing through your commute and feeling overwhelmed. Plan to sit in the sunlight for a few minutes, read a book, and set an intention for the day. Spray your favorite cologne or perfume, kiss your significant other, and exercise for a few minutes. Set a morning routine, and feel enlightened and productive!

Take breaks wisely.

It’s challenging to move from the couch to the desk chair, and a new schedule can leave you feeling depleted. Take a five minute break every hour and watch a video on your phone, doodle in your notebook, or organize your planner. Give yourself some grace, and know that transitions are only temporary, and soon this new normal will feel fitting. You can do this!

Inward and Upward: The Human Towers of Catalonia

“T

he Mighty Middle” as I’ve mentioned before, is a call to connect. Both physically and philosophically, my hope is that we choose to move both in towards one another, and also up, to our highest potential. And that collective collaboration, the lifting up of one another, is no better illustrated, or embodied, than in the Human Towers of Catalonia. The towers, called “Castells”, are a centuries old tradition. On Sunday mornings, thousands of people wake up early, driving to various locations, simply to come together, and build something: something daring, something bold and something beautiful. And within the construction of these physical towers, we also encounter many of the building blocks essential to creating, and sustaining, almost any worthwhile societal structure:

There’s an ideal or goal. (in this case, build the tallest tower) This aim in turn invites, or is even bolstered by, the healthy and robust competition that arises. There’s teamwork, complete with differing roles and duties. To build the biggest tower, it relies not only on people working together, but also identifying each individual’s most valuable contribution to the whole. There’s sacrifice. In the identifying of roles and duties, we see our ability to sacrifice for the greater good come clearly into focus. Just because you may want to be on the top, doesn’t mean that you deserve to be there, or that it would even be a good idea. So our sacrifice, often of ego or pride, is actually the thing which allows something bigger and better to emerge. And the beauty of building these collective structures, is that in striving together to create the best one possible (strong, balanced, reaching ever upward), everyone becomes a valued, integral part of it. We can all share equally in the joys of building something worthwhile, even if our roles were different. Because just like in society, everyone has their place: their individual strengths and weaknesses, proclivities and temperaments. And so the stronger, sturdier(and often more experienced) folks make up the bottom. Build a solid base for which to build, to experiment and to grow.

And with that base, the often younger, more nimble and courageous individuals are able to scurry to the top, in the hopes of reaching the entire entity to new, previously unattainable heights. If that’s not a metaphor for society, for the tension (and ultimately balance, however ephemeral) that conservation and progress must navigate constantly, I don’t know what is. And finally, there’s Transformation of the individual, as they accept their responsibility, and become part of something larger than themselves. They become part of the group, as they merge into a cohesive, connected entity. And finally of the structure which, buoyed by this strength and connection, pushes us all into new and exciting places. And the most incredible (but not surprising) thing of all, is that in building what may be viewed as symbolic, somewhat “trivial” structures, the Catalonians simultaneously underwent real societal change. The act, the practice, of building these Castells actually created progress that rippled far beyond the towers themselves. In a splendid example of “life imitating art”, Pablo Giori shared (in Smithsonian Folklife): "Team members gained social prestige, and they went through a process of internal democratization, allowing women in the groups for the first time. They were also professionalized, with regular team practices and a study of technique. A growing number

of groups also began to receive economic support from their towns. Nowadays, 15,000 people in more than 100 groups practice across Catalonia. Its transformations demonstrate the power of the Catalan culture to evolve and adapt to new social circumstances, bringing together tradition and modernity." And that’s exactly what “The Mighty Middle” is about. Acknowledging and discussing our values and goals. Understanding our roles. Coming together to create and sustain, however delicate or dangerous, the balance of the old and new. And sacrificing, individually, that which impedes us from working together, to transform into our highest selves. Let’s build something great together: Something daring. Something bold. Something beautiful.

Quest to the Summit One Step at a Time

Local Man Trains for Mountain Climb at Absecon Lighthouse

o more procrastinating! There are only six weeks before the August 27th start date of the mountains hike and it is way past time for Mike to get physically ready for it. If he doesn’t make it this time he may not ever make it. He and his hiking buddies John, Ed, and Jack had to turn back before reaching the Katahdin summit at the northern end of the Appalachian Trail in Maine last year and being in their late sixties this treacherous portion of the trail is a now or never event. So, where in flat, barely above sea level, coastal South Jersey can you train to be ready to ascend 4,168 feet over a treacherous 5.2 mile trail of rock? Mike could only think of one place that could satisfy his training needs, The Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City. It rises to a height of 171 feet, and is accessible from 10am to 5pm 7 days a week thru the summer,

come rain or shine. Mike’s request to use the lighthouse for training was received by Jean Muchanic, Executive Director of Absecon Light House, with gracious welcome and support; all that was asked of him in return was that he share his experience. That experience is turning out to be more like his usual

trail hikes than he could have imagined. Along the Appalachian Trail there is of course the physical challenge of the hike, the fresh air, and the wonder of nature to serve as incentives to tackle the hardships along the way. Mike can very surely feel the challenge of the light house as he climbs the 228

winding stairs up and down, again and again. There are six windowed landings along the stair well where Mike can hear the call of the seagulls, and rolling whoosh of the ocean; not only can he see fine white sand below him and the expanse of the deep blue ocean that stretches out to meet the soft blue sky on the horizon, but he also has a bird’s eye view of Brigantine, the Coast Guard Station, Gardner’s Basin, and more. Each time he reaches the top and steps out on to the platform encircling the giant light he is rewarded with a very welcome rush of fresh and salty ocean air that revives him from the climb and readies him to continue. The brick, iron, and granite Light House just might give Mike the edge that he needs. To be continued…

Cultivating Muh's Garden of Life By Krystle J. Bailey

fter the loss of their brother and father, Stephen and Anaija Head of Atlantic City were in search of a way to memorialize his life. After exhausting all options, Stephen Head found himself feeling defeated in his endeavors to honor his late brother, Mustafa Bundy-Head who was killed by gun violence in 2009. By October 2020, Stephen had not felt as though his brother was getting the honor that he deserved and decided to call on his community to create something beautiful. That is when the idea for “Muh’s Garden of Life” was born. Stephen’s idea would not only honor his brother, but everyone in the community affected by drugs and gun violence. He made a call to his niece, Anaija Head, daughter of the late Mustafa, who was pursuing her Landscape Architecture

degree at Virginia Tech. Anaija jumped on board with a vision for the garden that was in alignment with her field of study. She had been longing for a way to honor her father and the garden was a full circle opportunity to do so. The pair began rallying the troops with a petition from the community, garnering over 600 signatures in support of the garden by December. The community members were willing to get their hands dirty to build the garden, however they would need funding and support to bring it to life in the way they hoped. Willing to hear “no” as many times as necessary, Stephen sent out a sponsorship proposal to anyone who would listen. Ultimately, Muh’s Garden of Life received sponsorship from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City, and AtlantiCare’s Growing Green Initiative. With this support, Stephen, Anaija, and their community got to work building the garden of life. On July 4, 2021, surrounded by loved ones, the ribbon was cut as Muh’s Garden of Life was unveiled. fers those affected by gun violence a place for healing. Each of the 78 plots features a flower chosen by a family member and a name badge with a picture. For many, who either could not afford tombstones for their lost family members or have loved ones buried further from home, this is a space close to home that they can go to heal. “My garden has one purpose - to heal the people. It’s healing me and it’s healing them,” explains Stephen Head. “The garden is the first step. It calms people down to talk about their grieving. Kids are walking around angry, never taking the time to heal. The garden offers a place for that.” Head’s plan includes an 8-leg program that he is currently in the process of proposing to the state of NJ. The program is intended to stem from the garden’s healing space by providing resources for grieving mothers, mentorship programs for young men, and several other programs to help heal a community. The turnout for the garden has been beautiful, with community members of all ages taking time to experience the calm energy that the garden offers. Jahmir Campfield, 13, lost his brother in 2016. He shares, “It makes

me smile and I'm thankful to hear people say my brother’s name.” Jahmir is part of a group of local youth that work alongside Stephen Head to keep the garden clean and well put together. The garden offers them purpose and connection to their mothers, brothers, and fathers who are gone too soon. Muh’s Garden of Life, located in Atlantic Villas Apartments, offers that long overdue healing space for a grieving community. Head has no plans to stop with his own neighborhood. He is already working on the next garden in a neighboring community. “I’m listening to God and letting him guide me,” explains Head. “The trees and flowers are helping people reflect on the nonsense and making them slow down to think. Everybody is just grieving and walking around angry but everybody isn’t a bad kid. hile visiting the Jersey Shore, you’ll want to bring home something to remember your experience; a memento of all the fun times had while visiting our beautiful beaches. Many shops along the boardwalk sell hermit crabs as pets that you can buy. Before you invest in making this important purchase, you should have an understanding of how to care for these creatures and the care they require. Wild hermit crabs grow in various shapes and sizes, expanding anywhere from a few millimeters to two feet in length. You are bound to notice hermit crabs crawling along the beach, or climbing high along a seabed. They have been noted to live up to thirty years in their natural environment. With the most optimal conditions, hermit crabs can live anywhere from six months to a year in captivity. One of the most unique features of the hermit crab is its shell. These small, circular structures protect their fragile ligaments while maintaining the amount of moisture required for their survival. One interesting fact is that they do not grow their own shells; they get their shells from other crabs, gastropods, and snails. Hermit crabs use a molting process to grow and develop. For a period of one to two months, the crab will hibernate deep into the sand, at which point it will form a new exoskeleton. Once this process has completed, they will seek out a new shell to call home. Hermit crabs will also use their shells for added protection against a large number of predators including fish, snails, and blue crabs. Before bringing your new hermit crab home, be sure it is set up with the proper environment. Make sure it has an enclosure that is about the size of a ten gallon aquarium. Its home should be equipped with an air screen and

plenty of deep sand. Hermit crabs love to exercise, so ensure that they have plenty of room to climb and areas to hide in. Hermit crabs are a community of social creatures that live in large colonies in the wild. Your pet hermit would love to have several friends with him. It’s best not to have no less than two crabs per cage. Fluorescent and dome lighting will help keep temperatures at optimal levels for Sheldon to survive; make sure to install a thermometer to monitor conditions. They rely on 70 degree temperatures and a relative humidity of 75 percent. Fresh water is critical for the survival of your crustaceous friend. They use the fresh water to replenish, drink and bathe. Hermit crabs enjoy a diet consisting of fresh, natural foods. They have a

sweet tooth and enjoy apples, pears, and even applesauce. To ensure good health, they need to be given plenty of nourishment rich in calcium and supplements. This, again, can be found online or at an aquatic store. Baby food also works best. Avoid all processed foods. Buying painted shells may seem harmless and fun to look at, but it will also create an unsafe environment for your crustaceous friend. Over time the paint can easily chip off and get inside their food or water dish, which could cause hazardous effects. Make sure you have a variety of shells for your crab to choose from in its natural form. With the proper amount of love and care, your hermit crab can live a long, healthy life. It is important to take care of the creatures we choose to share in our lives.

12 Summer Safety Tips For Dogs

ummer is a great time to go out and have fun with your dog, but there are a few hazards to watch out for. 1. Give Your Dog Plenty of Water & Shade Dogs can’t regulate heat as well as us, so it’s not as easy for them to stay cool. Prolonged heat exposure puts them at risk for developing heat stroke. Keep them inside on days when it’s really hot. 2. Use a Kiddie Pool or Sprinkler to Keep Cool Does your dog love the water? Fill up a kiddie pool with water for your pup to cool off in. I suggest picking up a plastic one, since their nails can tear the softer ones. If you don’t have a kiddie pool, plenty of dogs enjoy playing with the hose or sprinklers. 3. Avoid prolonged exposure to sand and hot asphalt – it can burn your dogs paws. In the summer try to walk your dog in the morning or evening when the pavement isn’t so hot. If you walk during the day stick to grassy or wooded areas. 4. Short Faced Dogs Are More Susceptible to Heat Stroke If you have a short faced dog like a Bulldog or Pug remember that they don’t pant efficiently; they’re much

more susceptible to heat stroke. Bulldogs are especially intolerant to heat. They should have limited access to the outdoors when the weather gets above 80 degrees. 5. Don’t Leave Your Dog Alone in a Hot Car Never leave your dog inside your car in hot weather; a cracked window isn’t enough to keep a car cool. It’s also illegal in most states. Researchers learned that when it’s a sunny 78 degrees, the temperature in a parked car with windows cracked rises at least 32 degrees in 30 minutes. So: 78 degrees to 110 in half an hour. – Don’t Think For a Minute Dogs Can Survive in a Hot Car 6. Avoid Strenuous Exercise Avoid strenuous exercise during extremely hot days & keep the sessions short. The same goes for days with high humidity. For those really hot days check out some simple activities to keep your dog busy indoors. 7. Watch Out For Doggie Sunburn Dogs can get sunburn – especially light colored dogs with short fur.

There are sun protection lotions specifically formulated for dogs. Don’t use human sunscreen on your pet; many of the chemicals are toxic to them. 8. Make Sure Your Pet is Protected from Pests Ticks and mosquitoes are at their peak in the summer.

Many of the chemicals used in lawn treatments are toxic to pets. 10. Don’t Let Dogs Drink From Oceans, Lakes or Pools Don’t let your dog drink seawater; it causes dehydration and vomiting. If a dog ingests enough it can be fatal. Bring fresh water for your dog when you’re going out to the beach. 11. Shaving Your Dog Might Not Keep Him Cool Do not shave your dog because he’s panting. If you have a double coated breed their fur is actually providing relief from the heat, and shaving it will make it worse. 12.Make Sure Your Dog is Wearing Identification We spend a lot of time outdoors with our dogs in the summer, and that increases the risk of them running off or getting lost. Make sure your dog has a collar with your phone number on it, and it’s a good idea to have your dog microchipped in case their collar comes off.

efore we dive head first into the fitness trends of this year, let’s break down the difference between a trend and a fad. Often, a fad is a quick fix which usually doesn’t work for the long haul. Fitness fads come and go and eventually lose their buzz just like fad diets. A fitness trend is long term. It’s something that alters behavior and changes the way we approach exercise and fitness. They are here to stay because they are effective. Naturally, some people will always go crazy for new fitness trends. I see it all the time. They think that this will be the one that does the trick. They want to see what all the fuss is about. Each year, we see trends evolve and adapt or not. Years ago when I started teaching

spin class, it was so popular and still remains the same to this very day. It’s one of those addicting, fast paced workouts that people love. It will be interesting to see how the pandemic shapes our decisions. Prolonged lockdown periods had a major impact on the fitness industry. Traditional gym goers were leaning on technology to support their fitness regimes. Home fitness and digital workouts were essential. However, there will always be people who love to go to the fitness studio or gym. Even when you create a great online experience, there’s nothing quite like an in person group training

class to motivate your members. Technology will continue to be a key pillar in fitness though. It got us through some tough times. Some have stuck to their at home routines but most have gone back to their regular fitness schedule at their regular gyms and fitness centers. The social aspect is such a huge part of it and working out in our homes just lacks that whole piece. We need social interaction. We thrive from it. Mental health is just as important as physical health. I saw firsthand the general pleasantries from people being back together and that new “never take it for granted attitude.”

It’s refreshing to be with others who appreciate what you do for them as a leader in their workouts. As fitness brands continue to innovate and adapt to changing needs, we’ll be here to try it out. We will decide whether it’s a fad or becomes a new trend and something that we are excited to be a part of! n my last few columns, I explained several benefits of holding a funeral service. One I would like to highlight this week is how the service encourages sharing of memories that celebrate and validate the life of the deceased. If you think about it, everyone on this planet has a story to tell. Where did they grow up, go to school, meet their significant other, what did they do for a living, what hobbies and interests did they have, how many children and grandchildren did they have? Everyone is a unique special individual and has led a life that is worth recognizing, honoring and celebrating. This fact itself is one of the many reasons I love my job so much! I love to hear these stories

from every family I am so lucky to serve. I have had families tell me incredible things like how their mother was one of only 300 women who served in the U.S. Marines in World War II, or how their husband was an Olympic volleyball player. I hear things like “my dad loved making his own wine” or “my aunt and uncle did animal rescue work for 20 years” or “my grandfather helped build the church we worship at with his own hands”. It is amazing what each person has done in their lives and it deserves to be told at a funeral service to mark for others who this person was. So I encourage stories to be told about the deceased, picture boards and life videos to be set up or made to encourage memories, and tables set out for memorabilia to be placed on, again to tell that person’s life story. Stockton To Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Teaching in 2021-22
