The 2012 derecho: A look back Do we better understand what a derecho is?

ine years ago this week, we learned a new word. It's a word that brings back vivid and chilling flashbacks for some. For others, the mere mention of the word triggers trepidation. It was just before midnight on Friday night, June 29th, 2012, when a derecho swept through South Jersey, a complex of thunderstorms so intense that the fury they created left an indelible mark on Atlantic County's landscape. The numbers are staggering: Winds: Widespread hurricane-force wind gusts throughout the county. The Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) reported a peak 87mph wind gust. But meteorolo-

gists estimate localized gusts in excess of 100mph. And it wasn't just a brief burst of wind either. The most intense triple digit wind gusts occurred at the onset of the derecho, for the first five to ten minutes. But strong and damaging winds over 60mph persisted for 40 to 60 minutes in some places. Power outages: Atlantic City Electric reported 206,000 customers in South Jersey lost power, some for over a week. The loss of electricity was compounded by a brutal and prolonged heat wave, as scorching 90 to 100-degree heat and oppressive humidity levels lasted for 10 days. Fatalities: 22 total along the derecho's path from the Midwest to the East Coast, including 4 in South Jersey. Trees lost: Impossible to count, but easily in the thousands, of trees either entirely uprooted or with major limbs lost. What was most impressive was that it wasn't just dead or weak trees, but strong and healthy ones with notably thick diameter trunks. Lightning strikes: Also in the thou-

sands, as the intensity of the storms lit up the midnight sky with a seemingly continuous stream of electric blue bolts that lasted an hour or more. It's important to note that the word derecho was not born on that night. Rather, it was actually coined from back in the late 1800s from a Spanish word meaning "straight ahead." That makes sense, as a derecho is a widespread, longlived storm of "straight line" winds generated by fast-moving lines of intense thunderstorms. While the spin of a tornado leads to rotating winds that usually impact a much smaller area like a single neighborhood, a derecho's winds can be just as strong and impact a significantly larger area, like multiple counties and states. Due to a tornado's notoriety and a derecho's obscurity, many in South Jersey shared a common misconception and thought a tornado had struck. In fact, some insisted it was a tornado even after learning the word derecho. Truth be told, the damage would have been confined to a much smaller area had it actually been a tornado. While the word was relatively unknown before that fateful June night, you may be surprised to know that New Jersey actually gets a derecho once every three to four years on average. I recall at least two since the 2012 "super-charged" one. But yes, few are as intense as our generation defining storm nine years ago. And few are actually called derechos, at least not initially. That's because a derecho has to be "on the ground" for six hours or more covering a distance of 250 miles or more, producing 60mph gusts or greater along its entire path before it officially becomes a derecho. As a result, while the National Weather Service issues severe thunderstorm and tornado watches and

warnings to alert the public of impending severe weather, there are no such things as derecho watches and warnings. Perhaps there should be, as we learned the hard way that a derecho is an entirely different beast. Yet the same severe thunderstorm warning that was issued for the derecho back in 2012 would be issued for a lone, single-cell thunderstorm that knocks down a few trees in one or two townships. Of course, warnings can only go so far in alerting the public of approaching storms. The derecho taught us that storms that strike in the middle of the night, when many are asleep, are inherently difficult to warn in advance of. You can set up alerts for your phone to wake you when certain warnings are issued or even better have a NOAA weather radio trigger an alarm in advance of the worst storms. However, in the case of the derecho in question, the intensity and scope of its impact in South Jersey was a surprise. While the storm's ferocity was well-warned from Chicago to Delmarva, a last second northwards expansion of the monster into South Jersey caught everyone off guard. Yet over the last 10 years, forecasting derechos has improved, thanks in part to a more mainstream awareness that they exist plus an understanding of their impacts. Nine years ago this week, the South Jersey mainland got there once-in-a-generation storm. In all my years as a meteorologist, I've never been more awestruck and scared than that Friday night. Four months later, the shore got their storm when Sandy struck. As the 9-year anniversary of both pass this year, let's all hope we never see another year like 2012. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

arter Doorley, a ten-year-old from Brigantine, has surfed more than 400 consecutive days — in nor’easters, rain, snow, freezing temperatures and worst of all, "flat" days when the waves are tiny and few and far between.

Paired with his passion for waves, Carter is passionate about helping others. He has raised money for an animal rescue, collected over a thousand cans of food for those in need, collected and sent Valentines to our troops overseas and more! After every surf session, Carter picks up trash to help keep the beaches clean. Carter's extraordinary journey began when he found himself home from school during quarantine last March. He decided to spend his time doing what he loved, surfing. Since the beaches were never closed in Brigantine and surfing is a sport

that allows ample social distance, he decided he would go surfing every single day. His initial goal was to surf 100 consecutive days. He met that goal in early September, and kept on going. Monday, June 28th, Carter celebrated his 400th consecutive day -- in style! The day began at 6 AM at Skudin Surf American Dream in East Rutherford. There he met professional big wave professional surfers, Kai Lenny from Hawaii and Brett Simpson, the inaugural head coach of the United States Olympic Surfing team and the US Open Surfing Champion '09-'10. And that's not all. On Carter’s 365th day, Good Day Philadelphia, Fox 29 anchor Jennaphr Frederick interviewed Carter and promised him that if he made it to 400 days, she would come and

surf with him. Making good on her promise, Frederick and her News crew met Carter at the American Dream indoor wave pool on Monday. Carter gave Frederick both an interview and a surf lesson, all broadcast on televisions throughout the tri-state àrea. The day would not have been complete without surfing on his home break of Brigantine later that day. "Everything aligned and it could not have been a better day," shared Carter’s mom, Dawn Doorley. "Carter couldn't stop smiling!" What's next for this shooting star surfer? "500!" says Carter with a great deal of enthusiasm in his voice. hen Hurricane Sandy struck the Jersey Shore, it left a trail of destruction in its path. Barrier islands were cut off from the mainland, power lines disconnected and communication system offline for days. Thanks to the help of modern technology, local agencies are preparing for what Mother Nature could bring next. For the first time in the state of New Jersey, last week’s Emergency Response Drill, based out of the National Aviation Research and Technology Park (NARTP) in Egg Harbor Township, involved the use of both manned and unmanned drones. The drones took off from Woodbine Municipal Airport and spanned over

several miles. In the event of a major storm, the drones would provide emergency personnel with the most up-to-date status on damaged buildings, bridges, utility lines and evacuation routes. Dozens of individuals representing state, local and federal agencies, along with several industry partners and emergency management personnel, were on-site for last week’s simulation, including David Yoel, CEO of American Aerospace Technologies (AATI). “We’re trying to find a way to improve and accelerate (hurricane)

response so we can save more lives, reduce damage and recover more quickly.” One of the key aspects of Wednesday’s test was to provide a safe procedure for drones to assist in emergency operation. Currently, the Federal Aviation Administration states that drones cannot be flown in the immediate aftermath of a storm, allowing helicopters to perform search and rescue operations. Officials are hoping to develop a plan to allow drones in the air without putting helicopters at risk. “Trust

K9 Academy Teaches Dogs To Serve and Protect By Steffen Klenk

ou may notice K9 dogs out in public, working at airports, community events, courthouses, perhaps posing for an occasional photo-op. While on the job, they are working hard, sniffing for drugs and chasing down criminals. But what does it take for the average canine to become part of the force?

In order for a dog to become an official K9, they must go through the Atlantic County K9 Training Academy. Based out of Corbin City, it is one of several facilities to provide in-house K9 training within the state of New Jersey. The dogs that learn here leave with enhanced skills in areas ranging from obedience to agility, scent and odor detection. In order to stay on the job, each canine must go through a monthly recertification

process, allowing the dog to stay proficient in their line of work. One of the key aspects of becoming a police dog involves high energy. Playful, agile dogs, such as German Shepherds, are often the perfect candidate. During training at the K9 academy, shepherds will first learn obedience training and obeying the commands of their handler, afterwards moving into real-world scenarios. But it’s not just Shepherds that are used for training. Belgian Malinois have strong protection instinct, loyal to their handlers and a world class worker. They are highly energetic, requiring plenty of exercise. Labrador retrievers and bloodhounds may be used for search and rescue missions. The receptors of these specific breeds are anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 times more powerful than humans. According to trainers, these breeds have the ability to layer scent. “We can smell a cheeseburger. The dog can smell the bread, cheese, meat, sauce, and onion. They smell every piece of that burger.” For K9 officers, their dedication to duty is unwavering. Most officers stay on call 24/7; this is because the dogs are often needed to sniff out a person, body, substances or other items. They are often sent to airports, high-profile events, courthouses, and other locations where the dog’s special skills are required. The on-site trainers at the K9 Academy have had upwards of six years of handling. As a county agency, the facility works with other police departments and counties throughout the state, which is a major benefit, according to instructors. “We bring all of our experience and knowledge to the table. We show them our experience and show them the dos and don’ts to build their toolbox.” While being a K9 dog comes with many perks, there are also real threats. Dogs may become injured on the job. In order to handle any situation that may arise, all of the trainers are given first aid and CPR training. First class instruction from University of Pennsylvania is offered on site

regularly, and all dogs have ballistic vests for their protection. The dogs that go through the K9 Academy will stay on the job depending on that dog’s health. Often times, a K9 will retire at the age of 10, but can continue working until they are 11. “If they make it past 10 (years old), they did great,” says one instructor. “Anything past that is a bonus.” Once that dog has completed its work, it will go home to its handler and the handler’s family, where it is treated as a common house pet. While not on the job, the dog may receive an unwavering amount of love and pets from community members. Being a K9 dog is not easy work. It requires an immense amount of skill, agility, strength and playfulness. K9s are heroes who work to protect our nation and provide safety. For the officers involved in handling these beloved animals, as well as the trainers in Atlantic County, it is a devotion to duty. “You have to want to do this. olidays are special for many reasons, but for foodies like me, refreshments matter. Whether you’re hosting a barbecue or beach day, here are four recipes to spice up your Independence Day: 1. Flag Fruit Pizza Ingredients: ● One roll of Pilsbury Sugar Cookie Dough ● One pint of Blueberries ● One pint of Strawberries ● One container of Vanilla Frosting ● One container of Whipped Cream Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Roll the cookie dough into a 8 by 12 inch rectangle on a nonstick baking sheet. Bake for seven minutes until

golden. Let the base cool down for 30 minutes before adding toppings. After 30 minutes, spread a thin layer of vanilla frosting over the base. Wash and cut strawberries in half (so they lay flat). Wash blueberries. Decorate your flag pizza with rows of alternating strawberries and whipped cream, and place blueberries in a square in the top left corner. Place in the refrigerator before serving. Enjoy! 2. Red, White and Blue Sangria Ingredients: ● 1 cup of berry-flavored vodka ● ½ cup of simple syrup ● 1 cup of chopped strawberries ● 1 cup of blueberries ● ½ cup of freshly-squeezed lemon juice ● 1 bottle of white wine ● ½ liter of tonic water

Wash berries and chop as needed. Combine white wine, vodka, lemon juice and tonic water. Stir in simple syrup. Add berries and serve over ice. So refreshing! 3. Independence Day Cheese Board Ingredients: ● 1 round of soft cheese, like brie ● 1 block of hard cheese, like cheddar or manchego ● 1 log of cured meat, such as salami ● 1 block of blue cheese ● 1 container of crackers of your choice ● Homemade or store-bought bruschetta ● 1 container of blueberries ● 1 bag of red grapes Wash berries and grapes. Cut cheese and meat to your preference, and place ingredients on board. Serve chilled.

4. Parmesan Grilled Corn on the Cob Ingredients: ● 3 pounds of corn, shucked ● ½ cup of feta ● ½ cup of shredded parmesan ● 2 teaspoons of garlic powder ● 2 teaspoons of salt ● 1 teaspoon of pepper ● Chopped parsley or cilantro ● 1 cup of melted butter

Prep grill and shuck corn as needed. Place corn on the grill and rotate every 5 minutes. Remove corn after 20 minutes. Combine spices and chop herbs. Once corn is removed from the grill, pour butter evenly over the cob, then sprinkle spices, herbs, and cheese. Serve immediately. Delicious!

Fireworks in the Garden – Bee Balm Let It Grow By Tammy Thornton

ike a friend that comes back to visit every summer, the flowers of Bee Balm (Monarda) show up in my garden late in June, hang around until the first frost, then fade away until the following season. Bee Balm has an unusual look that reminds me of fireworks, which is very fitting, since it is always bursting with blooms by the Fourth of July. Often, I make an Independence Day bouquet filled with these firecracker red flowers, adding white and blue flowers to complete the theme. A member of the mint family, bee balm has a tendency to spread like wildfire, but it is easy to pull out or transplant. It spreads by underground stolons and, therefore, stays mostly in the section of the garden in which it was planted. This perennial will

die back in the winter, but baby plants innocently poke out of the ground in spring. During this time, it’s easy to move the little plants to another section of the garden or share them with a friend. But by summer, they are tall, and the garden is on fire with their vibrant, red tubular flowers. Just when you think this “friend” is becoming overbearing, hummingbirds and butterflies show up and you realize how much you love this plant in your garden. Once the flowers are at their peak, it is rare to look out of my window and not see a hummingbird hovering over the flowers and enjoying their nectar. One of the great thrills while working in the garden near the bee balm has been my close encounters with hummingbirds. thrives in humid conditions, so plant bee balm in full sun and thin out the plants to increase air circulation. I prune the infected plants by cutting them in half, which will promote new healthy blooms. Various fungicides are on the market to combat powdery mildew, or you can try one of the endless home remedies found online using combinations of baking soda, apple cider vinegar, or even milk. Usually, it’s late in the season when powdery mildew really affects my bee balm, so I remove the worst looking plants and call it a day. Bee balm is a must have in the pollinator garden. Be sure to plan a dedicated area where the bee balm can freely spread. Otherwise, as it grows taller, it will surpass and engulf the plants around it. Masses of color will create the best visual effect, and bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds will be attracted to the profusion of flowers. A look back at Captain Starn's

rowing up on Absecon Island in the 50’s and 60’s meant that Atlantic City with all it had to offer, was only a short bus, jitney or car ride away. My friends and I would grab a ride and spend the day on the Million Dollar, Steeplechase or Steel Piers. A

few bucks in our pockets would last us all day and into the evening. But one of my favorite outings was when my parents would take us to Captain Starn’s down at the Atlantic City inlet. Captains Starn’s was an area which offered a restaurant, a fleet of fishing and speed boats, a sailboat and an area where sea lions could be fed. Frequently, my father would get me up early, collect our fishing gear and take me to Captain Starn’s for a half day of deep sea fishing. A coffee can half filled with clams as bait sitting in the sun for hours is the reason I can’t eat clams or oysters to this day. A family visit would consist of watching the boats come and go, feeding the sea lions with fifteen

and I thought we had really set the stage for a memorable evening. During World War II, the British described the Americans in not the most complimentary fashion as “over paid, over here and over sexed.” Well,

cent bait and watch them leap up and practically snatch it right out of your hands. I always looked forward to a ride on the Miss Atlantic City speedboat. It would idle at the dock with a deep rumble before slowly exiting the inlet while I sat with anticipation. I knew that she was going to be let loose to roar along the Atlantic City beaches sending huge plumes of spray into the air. It was an exhilarating ride and if we got hit with a little spray during the trip, even better. One summer in my later teens, my English relatives came over with their teen daughter and her friend. My parents suggested that my friend, Dave and I be nice hosts and take them out. We brought them to Captain Starn’s and with romance on our minds, we thought a ride on the sightseeing boat would advance our intentions. We sat on the top deck, the ocean was calm and we were treated to a beautiful evening view of Atlantic City in all its illuminated splendor. Dave

I wasn’t overpaid, not over there and I guess our dates kept the third option out. My cousin was soon hanging her head over the rail even though the seas were calm. Her friend, my date complained about something in her eye during the whole cruise. Dave and I sat quietly and deflated while watching the skyline drift past. During the rest of their stay, I had to endure dinners, afternoon teas and other family outings while sitting sheepishly on the side. A lot of very fond memories come flooding back about Atlantic City during that era but visits to Captain Starn’s always remains one of the best.

Jewelry With Words Angie Gant has always had a love for jewelry. She used to make jewelry or do some type of crafting for fun in the evenings, and eventually decided to try something a bit more challenging and fulfilling. Angie began h a n d - s ta m p i n g jewelry seven years ago, selling her creations to friends and family. It was then she realized she wanted to turn her hobby into a business and established Jewelry With Words. Hand-stamping is a process by which a metal blank is marked with lettering and small designs. Stainless steel stamps are struck by a hammer, creating the impressions. This old-fashioned process takes a lot of practice and, according to Angie, can often result in wasted metal blanks (not to mention sore thumbs) from poorly placed hammer strikes. But sore thumbs and an over-full recycling bin aside, Angie loves

hand-stamping. It allows her to personalize and customize each piece. She sometimes finds inspiration for her creations online, staying on top of trends and searching for sentiments to empower those who wear her jewelry. You can find words of encouragement such as, “I am enough”, “Just breathe”, “Be the change”, and many more. And what would customized jewelry hand-made at the South Jersey coast be without plenty of beach-inspired designs? Angie’s hand-stamping can be found on adjustable aluminum cuff bracelets, rings, and toe rings, necklaces and charm bracelets, and key chains. Two Tin Crows

Mary Janasky has been in retail most of her life, primarily working in different well-known women’s clothing stores. So, when she decided to go in a different direction, she already knew her next step. She would open her own shop and focus on home décor. She previously owned a small business with home décor but opening Two Tin Crows when Stainton’s Gallery of Shops opened its doors in 2012 was the start of a beautiful friendship here. Mary is often referred to affectionately as the “Dip Lady”, since you will see her almost every weekend and some weekdays offering samples of her delicious dip mixes. Even throughout the pandemic, you could find her at the front of the store, wearing her mask and gloves, and offering safely prepared, individual portions of the yummy treats for customers to taste. The variety of dips she offers in her shop is vast, and includes such flavors as jalapeno popper, bacon cheeseburger, birthday cake, and gochujang, as well as mixes for

no-bake cheesecakes, beer bread, and pie fillings, among others. But there is so much more to Two Tin Crows, like one of Mary’s favorites – candles! She carries candles in dripless tapers, jars, and even tins, and there are loose wax melts for customers to mix as they choose. Lighting, pillows, frames, wall art, garden décor, and decorative home pieces round out her collection of items. Much of this eclectic mix of décor is nautical-themed, but many items also feature other elements of nature like butterflies, country scenes, and lovely trees. Mary is a native of Atlantic County and has lived in Somers Point most of her life. This year, she and her husband will celebrate 34 years of wedded bliss. y the time you read this, preparations for the 4th of July holiday weekend will be well underway. Happy Birthday America and let me be one of the first to say how GREAT it is to be able to celebrate without masks! In sports, since I last wrote, the Phillies could only manage a 2-4 record through a critical six game stretch. The Eagles get some good news from the NFL regarding uniform colors. Former Eagles QB Ron Jaworski is able to hold his celebrity golf event again. A former Flyers coach gets a chance to prove he wasn’t the problem in Philadelphia. The Sixers continue to try and analyze what went wrong, while Ben Simmons makes an announcement regarding the Olympics. In golf, one week after the U.S. Open, a regular tour event in Connecticut gives us a thrilling finish. Plus, on the local front, Mike Adams is on the move again in minor league baseball and now finds himself just one step shy of the big leagues.

From entertainment, a legendary singer has Citizens Bank Park on his farewell tour, but can anyone afford the price of tickets? Plus, BROOOOOCE is back on Broadway. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I’ll start with the Phillies as they had a critical six-game stretch of games against two division opponents and, to put it mildly, underperformed. They could only go 2-4 in those six games, and watched their bullpen blow leads repeatedly. ● None was worse than the first game of a doubleheader in New York last Friday when Aaron Nola tied a MLB record by striking out ten (10) batters in a row, only to watch his teammates blow a 1-zip lead and eventually lose 2-1 in eight innings. Nola ties Tom Seaver’s record set 51 years ago with ten consecutive strikeouts, but it ultimately didn’t matter after an embarrassing two-base error by relief pitcher Jose Alvarado ● We had former Phillies shortstop and manager Larry Bowa on the radio on 97.3 ESPN last Sunday to try and find out why the Phillies are such a poor team defensively. One

of the greatest fielders of his time is as perplexed as the rest of us as to why the Phillies keep booting the ball at critical moments! Also in that series, the Phillies managed to score two runs of the best pitcher in baseball this season, Jacob deGrom, but even that didn’t matter as once again, the bullpen in the bottom of the 9th. This time it was a fielding error by Rhys Hoskins and then a blown save from Hector Neris that lead to a Mets 4-3 victory. A closer look at the numbers shows that the Phillies starting pitchers in the four-game series with the Mets had a 0.39 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched with only 1 earned run given up, 14 hits and a strikeout to walk ratio of 26 to 5…!!! I mean, c’mon…if you get starting pitching like that, you SHOULD win! And yet the Phillies are going nowhere fast. As I write this, the Phillies have lost in Cincinnati in another game where they initially led, and, you guessed it, the bullpen faltered. Up 4-2, this time it was newcomer Neftali Feliz who gave up a grand slam to Nick Castellano as the Reds eventually won 12 to 4.

I’ll say it here first, that the Phillies will probably only have ONE allstar and it’s clearly Zack Wheeler. His final strikeout in a 4-2 win over the Mets last Sunday was his 130th of the season, lifting him into a tie with the Indians' Shane Bieber for the big league lead. Wheeler, who lowered his ERA to 2.20, also leads the majors with 106 1/3 innings pitched.

Time to switch to the Eagles now as they got some good news off the field as the NFL is getting rid of a rule put in place in 2013 that prevented teams from using multiple helmets during the season. That paves the way for the Eagles to make the Kelly green jersey and helmet the team’s alternate uniform. Let me say “well, it’s ABOUT time!” I’m all in favor of this, as the rule was enacted as a safety measure related to concussions, so players would practice and play in the same helmet. But that also prevented them from wearing anything but a midnight green helmet. I’ve always loved the Kelly green look, and even though this won’t take effect until the 2022 season, consider me stoked! In other football news, I caught up with former Birds QB Ron Jaworski the other day in Galloway as they held the 37th annual Ron Jaworski Celebrity Golf Challenge. I’ve been covering this event in some form or fashion since 2004, and each year I look forward to the various celebrities and folks that show up to support “Jaws”. The big beneficiary is the area youth, as the golf event is Jaws Youth Playbook’s crown-jewel fundraiser for at-risk youth in our community

Springsteen. Of course, the whole ordeal was much ado about nothing, for one obvious reason: "New Jersey? They love me there." I’ll close with a word about masks. Most places are now mask OFF. Lessons from the Founding Fathers

h en in the course of human events it becomes necessary . . ." Most of us recognize that as the opening statement of the Declaration of Independence. I've read it many times, but the word that stood out to me is the word, necessary. When Thomas Jefferson penned these words on behalf of our Founding Fathers he didn't say, "it becomes an option or a good idea." Jefferson said there comes a time when it becomes necessary. No doubt you've seen the stories behind the story of the men who risked everything they were, everything they owned, everyone they loved and held close over the principles and ideals they held sacred. Because in their mind, it became necessary, they all made a choice to sign off on a document that would forever change the world. They weren't guaranteed that it would work. It could have all turned disastrous. But they made a choice. The question is, why? Some might look at the Founding Fathers and conclude it started with courage. I don't think so. Before courage could kick in, there had to be conviction. When you believe a choice you face is necessary, it's more than likely born out of a deeply held conviction. If that conviction is strong enough, the courage to follow through comes naturally. 245 years ago in a hot, humid, tension filled room in Philadelphia, 56 men made a choice that started a revolution that changed the world. Our choices may not be as dramatic, but I would argue many of them are every bit as far reaching. Each day we are faced with choices. If we are honest with ourselves, many of those choices are necessary. Choices for our families, our careers, our relationships and the direction of our lives. It's no exaggeration to say that the choices we choose to make (or not make) impact those around us, the community and world we live in and generations to come through our children. It's been said that none of us are an island. Each life impacts another. So, how do you make choices that

change the world? The formula is fairly simple. ● Conviction ● Courage ● Choice The question is, do we hold convictions that trigger the courage to make the necessary choices to change the world? And it’s not just the BIG things, it’s the little things as well. It’s my “conviction” that we are living in a time when we must have the

The Circus is in Town By Marc Berman

uffy Nicolas is the owner, producer and ringmaster of the Super American Circus and Cirque Risque, both coming to Atlantic City, beginning July 1st. Shore Local's Marc Berman sat down with Tuffy Nicolas recently. Marc: Let's start with your background with the Circus. Tuffy: My father was the Ringmaster of the Ringling Brothers Circus for decades. My mother was a bear trainer they brought over from Germany. She trained polar bears. I grew up in the Circus. My sister and my entire family also grew up in the Circus. It is what we do. We also ran a Carnival in Philly, the James & Strates show. Back then, it wasn't all about the rides. It was a show! My dad ran a snake show. You're going to love this story, Marc... I came home from school one day in second grade and my dad said "Well, Son, it's going to be me or you in the

snake pit tonight." I said "Why? What happened?" He said "I had to fire the woman because she was always drunk, so it's just you and me. I'm a better talker than you.. so I think you need to go in the pit." So I'm eight years old and I go into the snake pit with 120 snakes from all over the world. Yes, I got bit. I still have the scars, but they were mostly constricting snakes: boa constrictors, anaconda, grass snakes, tree snakes, etc. The anaconda was about 20 feet long, not a 40 foot one like they had in the wild. So I learned how to pick up the anaconda. The audience threw in quarters like crazy! I bought a twin engine go-kart at the end of that show. I was the snake boy! We also had the Gorilla Girl with the Carnival -- "Before your eyes she will change.." Marc: Wow! You are bringing all of this background to the tent at Showboat, inside the Big Top! So you have two Circuses. In the afternoon, it is the family friendly Super American Circus. Tuffy: It’s not called the average American Circus, it's called the SU-

PER American Circus because it is! We brought in performers from literally around the world. Think about it. Ringling Brothers closed a few years ago. Cirque Du Soleil is closed right now. They are only planning to bring back two shows in Vegas out of all the shows they had around the world. So we brought in performers from Ringling Brothers, Cirque Du Soleil and America's Got Talent. Our singer, Robert Hatcher was on America's Got Talent and American Idol, a finalist in both. I think he came in second in one and third in another. He is a great singer and performer with a strong presence. These artists are the best of the best! We are very lucky to have been able to put them together and bring them to Atlantic City. Marc: Cirque Risque is at night for the more mature adult audience. I remember when you brought that to Atlantic City 10 years ago. Now...New & improved! What do you got? Tuffy: Well, this is another cast of amazing artists from around the world, but mostly from Las Vegas and Florida. Burlesque artists and some

comedians. The last show was very well received, given four stars in the New York Times. This show is twice as good! I'm so proud of it. Our choreographer from Las Vegas, LeAnn Alcorn put together a show that is amazing! Marc: Wow! And your ribbon artists? Tuffy: Aerialists, Contortionist, Dare Devils… Yes, it is sexy, but it is more about comedy. It's such a funny show with slap stick acrobatic comedy along with adult comedians. Solar System Walk Comes to Ventnor Boardwalk

f you are interested in planetary science, you can experience a scaled down representation of the Solar System while walking along the Ventnor City Boardwalk. Starting July 3rd, “The Solar System Planetary Walk” is an educational, half-mile track that depicts a fairly accurate representation of the planets in relation to size and distance from the sun and other planets. The walk starts at the “Sun”, on the boardwalk behind the Ventnor Community Center between New Haven and Newport Ave. and heads towards Atlantic City, ending at Oxford Ave. Boardwalk strollers can walk the 3.6 billion miles it will take to get to Pluto in just a half-mile at this scale. Along the way, signs with fun facts

representing each planet (including Pluto) are placed at the appropriate scaled distance from the sun. Planetary posters mark the positions of the planets in relation to the sun. Earth in relation to the size of the sun. At a scale of 1 inch equaling 100,000 miles, the sun will only be 8-1/2 inches in diameter while earth is the size of a peppercorn or about 3/16 of an inch. The polarity that’s present in everything, from the macro to the micro. The way the planets move, our bodies behave, and our systems function, all act in accord with it. Our world is predicated on that polarity, dependent on the dance of maintaining a slim but crucial balance, between chaos and order. And so whether it’s people, politics, or the planet, “balance” serves as the baseline of what we consider wellness . Too far out of it, and we begin to notice the effects. And luckily, we have a miraculous, built in sense of when we are in it, and when we’re not. Because we feel it, right? When in balance, we feel good. There’s a sense of wellbeing, of integration, and alignment. Of power and purpose. We’re happier, healthier, and more willing to share generously with others. When it’s not? Well, we feel that too. Things feel off, or just “weird”. We become anxious and afraid. Begin to close off, to pull away from others, deepening our sense of disconnect. And once there, distrust, and disgust, aren’t too far behind… So the question is: How do you feel? Right now. About your life. Your community and country. The state of the world. I’ve asked this question, as often as I can, for the last few years. And this column is the result of the countless conversations I’ve had, with individuals from all walks of life, who simply don’t feel well. People who, whether it’s their personal life, politics, or the pandemic, can’t shake this feeling that things are, in some way, “off”. Many of us are tired of the disconnect, the distrust, and the division

that’s become rampant in our discourse, and want something different. We believe that there’s a healthier, more powerful, purposeful path forward, but might not know exactly what that is, or where to find it. And there’s a collective yearning to explore and develop the deeper, more fundamental things that make us human, instead of continuing to contribute to, with our words and actions, what divides us. Division can be, and often is, taught. It is regurgitated and reinforced, until it becomes fact, a defining component of our culture, driving us further apart. But connection can also be taught. So can curiosity, compassion, and courage. Values that make us a valiant and vibrant people. Ones which, if we choose to embody them, serve to create a culture of connection, moving us inward and upward, towards our highest potential. And my dream, my purpose with this column, is to help create (in whatever humble way I can) that culture. To help bring balance back into our lives, and to offer a space that not only fosters, but rightfully rewards, those individuals and institutions who also embody that sense of connection. That’s the type of world that I’m interested in. The energy and ideas I’d like to share here, and explore with you all. So if that’s a future you’re interested in exploring as well, or feel called to help co-create (and please feel free to reach out with ideas and individuals you believe deserve to be seen and heard), this column is for you. Meet Artist, Tim Smith Shore Local Talent By Krystle J. Bailey

ocal artist, Tim Smith, picked up a pencil six years ago and began to draw his way to a whole new life. Having experimented with drawing and artistic outlets as a child, Tim never imagined art as an optional career path. The father of three from Northfield is a full time educator in Upper Township with a passion for creating meaningful work. One paid opportunity to draw a picture for a friend was the catalyst that launched Tim’s career in art. Each completed project led to another and before his eyes, Tim had created an elaborate portfolio. Creating art became something that he felt he needed to do in order to experience a truly fulfilled life. Now, when Tim isn’t spending time with his family or his students, he can be found in his home garage studio with music pumping through his speakers and a paintbrush in his hand. In this meditative space, Tim

creates through feeling. With each stroke of his paintbrush, Tim brings to life what he refers to as “spontaneous realism.” Using acrylic paint on canvas, Tim notes that he never knows exactly how a piece will turn out. He aims to add abstract twists and loosely flowing brush strokes to each of his unique works.

“I use a lot of how I'm feeling to motivate me. If I'm blasting music, you might see that in my painting with quick brush strokes,” explains Smith. “A lot of my brush strokes are

kind of messy and I like that about my style because I think it shows my creative process through it. It shows my energy and feelings at that time.” Tim gains inspiration from various other artists, especially his brother and uncle who have been making art for decades. Through consistency, experimentation, and curiosity, Tim has created a unique style in his pieces that keeps his work in high demand. A painting of Muhammad Ali that Smith painted several years ago was the first piece that garnered a great deal of local attention and put him on the map as a respected artist. Since then, he’s gone on to paint one-ofa-kind compositions of celebrities such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and Notorious B.I.G. Tim Smith’s most recent work includes a 4’x8’ cityscape painting along with his newest venture, custom Vans sneakers. Tim began creating sneaker art this past January when a client reached out inquiring about the possibility of painting a local baseball player on a pair of cleats. Tim, who had never pursued this style of art, posted the end result on his social media accounts, which opened the floodgates for custom shoe orders. He has since painted custom sneakers featuring Captain America,

abstract art, Philadelphia Phillies, along with several others. In addition to creating custom work for his clients, Tim teaches private art lessons for children and hosts a kids art channel on YouTube, Kids Draw 4 Fun. The future is bright for Tim Smith’s art career. As

he continues to pursue his art and explore various artistic mediums, he looks forward to upcoming art shows, a perpetually growing client base, and continuing to create large-scale original pieces. epeating the same workout routine over and over is a surefire way to STOP getting results. I see this all the time. The person. We’re creatures of habit and we tend to stick to things we’re familiar with and good at. When it comes to working out, if you want to make progress and keep seeing changes in your body, you’ve got to start switching things up. Your body has an amazing ability to adapt quickly and when it does, that’s when you hit the dreaded plateau and you stop making progress. You cannot do one type of exercise if you’re looking for change. This is especially true for those over forty. Another common mistake is do back to back workouts that last hours. Longer workouts do not equal better results or faster results.

When it comes to getting lean and getting toned, your body responds to quality over quantity. One good solid workout per day for 5 out of 7 days is all you need. Rest days are important. Wouldn’t it be easier to supercharge your workouts and fire up that metabolism so it helps you get lean, fit and strong while cutting your workout time in half? There are specific exercises that will skyrocket your metabolism and boost your calorie burn for up to 48 hours after your workout is over. Strength training is critical as we age, so by using weights, we can create a metabolic boost, where body fat is being burned as fuel. Compound exercises, using more than one muscle group at a time are excellent. Consider a squat and how this one simple motion engages your core, quads, hamstrings, glutes, calf muscles and hip flexors. It is important to remember that compound exercises are part of strength training and help in weight loss by building muscle mass. Muscle mass burns more calories while at rest compared to fat. Building strength by lifting helps with everyday functional activities. Here’s a list of my favorite four compound movements: ● Squats- all types (feet shoulder width apart, feet together, feet wider with toes pointed out. I love them for their impact on the quads, glutes and hamstrings. They also work your core and back, particularly when you add weight in your hands as you perform them. ● Deadlifts- a compound leg exercise. It even works the back and shoulders and core which is why it makes for a superb all round exercise. You actually do deadlifts all the time in your everyday

life, every time you bend down to pick something up or tie your shoelaces. However, in the gym you’ll want to add a barbell or a pair of dumbbells in your hands to provide some extra resistance. Weighted Lunges- They are a really great exercise if you’re targeting your legs and butt. Add a dumbbell and you’ll give your glutes, quads, hamstrings, calves and core a real challenge. Lunges are also known as a unilateral exercise, which means they work one side of your body at a time which helps with balance. Hammer curls on a stability ballThese are an excellent option if you’re interested in compound movements for arms. Biceps and forearms are working hard all the while taking this one step further on a stability ball, engaging the core by balancing and hitting all the way down to the quads.

I have seen him share his insight on a scene with older actors in rehearsal. I have sat in awe as Eric Phillips would add his own depth and range to a scene he was reading for the first time off a printed page. Eric Phillips was ready early. Today in 2021, he is making his name as an actor and his star is blazing hotter everyday. If you’re lucky you may still see Eric Phillips at The Police Athletic League or working with The AC Drama Guild or The P.A.W or working on a project with his mom and other friends and family. However in 2018, Eric Phillips landed his first national commercial as a spokesperson for Giant’s Food Grocery Stories. Phillips has worked as an actor on “In Pursuit with John Walsh." People who have yet to meet Eric Phillips personally can see him again this season in the hit Epix show The Godfather Of Harlem. ow that the world has opened up, calendars are filling up. Weddings, barbecues, beach days, play dates, date-dates, and family reunions are coming in hot and served with a side of stress. It makes you wanna start social distancing again. But before you fake a flat tire and fake-cough into the phone, check out these tips to manage stress and practice self-care this summer: 1. Set Clear Boundaries Any therapist off the street will talk your ear off about the importance of boundaries. When you intentionally set limits on how often and who you hang out with, you create more space to do what you love and relax. If your work friend is constantly inviting you to grab drinks, let them know that you can only go out once per week. Then you can stop feeling guilty for always saying no; they know your boundaries and can respect them. Does your significant other berate you about ordering too

much takeout? Come to a compromise and agree to cook five days per week. When we set boundaries, we treat ourselves with dignity and thrive under structure. Don’t be surprised when you feel inner peace. 2. Add Moments of Quiet Into Your Schedule Learning to be comfortable in your own skin is one of the most important lessons in life. Social media, children, and the media can make your world feel chaotic. But learn to protect moments of silence and calm during your day. Download an app and try meditating. Pray while you drive rather than listen to music. Sit by the ocean, close your eyes, and appreciate the sound of the waves. Journal during your lunch break rather than watch videos. How can you rest your mind and find peace this summer? 3. Create a Self Care Box There will always be times that feel overwhelming and stressful. The ways we cope with these moments reflect your health and resilience. Gather items that ground and comfort you and keep them in a box or basket, readily available for

crisis times. Here are some ideas of things you can include: a favorite record or CD, a fuzzy blanket that smells like childhood, fidget toys like tangles or stress balls, crystals, puzzles, or packets of your favorite tea. Feeling calm yet? 4. Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help Sometimes we need a little extra boost to get through tough times. If you notice that you’re crying more, feeling depressed or isolating from others, you may need to seek out a therapist. In the meantime, let your loved ones know that you are struggling. A smile, a hug or a meal shared between family or friends can work miracles. If you are feeling unsafe toward yourself or others, look up your local crisis hotline and talk to someone who can offer direction and support. 5. Start a Gratitude Journal Numerous studies show that practicing gratitude allows you to feel more happiness and peace. Last year,

I wrote three things I was thankful for everyday in calendar squares. I found that I would spend my days searching for good so I could write down something new for tomorrow. We have so much to be thankful for: health, loved ones, nature, and hope for the future. It’s also wonderful to look back and read through how we loved our lives months or years ago! Don’t let the mundanity of life exhaust you. When we take care of ourselves, we become better friends, parents, partners, employees and people. Life is short, dear reader. A Story of Grace, Resilience and Art projects for the armed forces. Upon returning home, Taylor found it particularly challenging to land himself a job as an African American Army Veteran. He was often told that he would be better off staying enlisted, as the jobs he sought were not offered to men of color at that time. Ultimately, with the help of the NAACP, Taylor was able to find printing work but soon decided to pursue sign painting as a civilian. Growing up in Pleasantville, Taylor knew many of the local business owners who offered him the opportunity to paint signs for their storefronts. One sign led to the next and soon, Glenn was painting up and down Main Street. Still, as he pursued more work, he was faced with the challenge of navigating a career path that was not welcoming to him based on the color of his skin. This challenge did not deter Taylor from pursuing his dream of creating art. Time and time again, Taylor showed up with a paintbrush in his hand and a mission on his mind. The ignorance of others at the time only pushed Mr. Taylor to prove them wrong.

lenn Taylor has spent his lifetime building a fruitful career in sign painting. What began in 1967 when he was enlisted in the United States Army has become his life’s work. Taylor, who was born and raised in Pleasantville, NJ began lettering US Army helicopters during his three years of service in the Vietnam War. Taylor had always been skilled artistically so when he was drafted to the war as a helicopter mechanic after high school, he found his creative niche in lettering and sign making. ittle else can define an NJ summer the way a good cookout can: Dad on his best grill game, children running through the sprinklers, and increasingly competitive games of cornhole are all just occasional reprieves from the main affair – food and drink. While the kids are drinking from the hose, you’re probably looking for something a little more sophisticated to sip on. I’m here to help you discover your newest BBQ wine staple. For the “salad” lovers – Ah, the all-American barbecue “salad” – creamy, salty, mayonnaise-based goodness. If you’re the person looking forward to eating various potato and pasta salads in rotation till your pants get tight, your go-to wine needs to be generously acidic. Acid cuts through fat and works beautifully with salt,

so reach for Sauv Blanc, dry Riesling, or bubbly. My current faves are Ranga Ranga Sauvignon Blanc , Montinore Almost Dry Riesling, and Kila Cava. Don’t worry, if you’re a red drinker, there’s always a lean Pinot Noir like Cooper Mountain. For the carnivores – Whether you’re doing steaks, chicken, or burgers on the grill, you’ll need something much more bold. With big fat and big flavor of fire-cooked meats, you need a big red. Many think of reds like this as a summer faux-pas, but this is not the case. Try Cabernet from Paso Robles for something a bit riper and rounder than the typical Cab, like Broadside Margarita Vineyard. Or, roll with something from Spain, like Descendientes Petalos or Cune Rioja Reserva. Escorihuela Malbec is a unique and structured Malbec designed to pair specifically with fire grilled meats!

For the BBQ sauce dousers – Red and white meats are paired the same way when you consider the Great Equalizer - - which, of course, is barbecue sauce. Barbecue sauce comes in many styles, but it will typically always have some sweetness to it amid the smokey and savory flavors. This makes it tricky to pair, since food being sweeter than the wine pairing will invariably

make the wine taste bitter and harsh. Look for silky, round tannins and ripe, jammy fruits here. Current go-tos in that sphere are Hope’s End Red Blend, Cooper and Thief Red, and 19 Crimes Shiraz. Overall, any Australian Shiraz or Zinfandel based red blend from Cali will work! For the shellfish fiends – Some of us are just born to shuck and crack our way through summer. From swanky raw bars to the slightly less dignified stacks of whole crab, the unique flavors of the sea come alive with the right wine pairing. I’ve found that the magic really happens when you align wines with the distinct mineral edge of shellfish. You’ll find wines with this mineral character in regions surrounded or defined by water, such as the Loire Valley. Bonnet Huteau Muscadet and Sancerre la Moussiere are excellent examples of this region. Alternatively, Italy offers the elegant Gavi di Gavi – I’m partial to Villa Sparina’s. These tips will have you ready to house hunt and to sell your home simultaneously. In most markets, Spring is usually the busiest time of the year for buying and/or selling a home. As states reopen and people learn to navigate the new normal, both buyers and sellers are taking a fresh look at their options. We have had a very active late spring and now an early summer market is expected to blossom, allowing hopeful buyers and sellers to fulfill their 2021 real estate goals. How should you plan for this summer market? Here are the best tips for both buyers and sellers: • Buying Tips for Summer If you are buying a home this year, you will probably be looking for a resale property. Massive stoppages in the construction sector and building material price increases mean that new homes are scarce and at premium pricing. • Bargain Hunt While a large number of days on market might usually have a negative connotation, remember that many homes sitting without offers may have listed early in the selling cycle. They may be perfectly nice, move-in ready homes that simply hit the market at the wrong time. At the same time, due to the economic conditions of the past couple of months, many homeowners may be moving to find a new job or to get out from under their current debt load now while they can. The Doughterty Family are the owners of the Knife and Fork, Doc’s Oyster House and Harry’s in Atlantic City and the Linwood Country Club. Frank, can you give us a little insight into what you’ve created here at Dougherty’s Steakhouse and Raw Bar? “Resorts was looking for another steakhouse and they came to us and we said this is such a beautiful space, it was hard to pass up. n life, there are a lot of moments that we mark as significant events. These events are sometimes marked with what our society calls a ceremony. We have a ton of ceremonies that we perform or go through in our lives. Some of these ceremonies we even do more than once. What are some examples, well there are the obvious, like weddings, graduations, bar mitzvah’s, confirmations and retirement. But there are also birthdays, anniversaries, baptisms and graduations. All throughout the world people celebrate through ceremony, with ceremonies having cultural or religious significance. A ceremony allows us to acknowledge a transition or a rite of passage. Such as the starting of a new chapter in our lives (marriage) or a new beginning and sometimes a conclusion. Cere-

monies are held to celebrate a new life (birth) or in honor of a career well done (retirement). Communities hold ceremonies to reflect on events of historical (Fourth of July) or social significance (Martin Luther King’s Birthday). For those events that cause devastation or loss, ceremonies can help us recognize the impact and help to heal (9/11) . A ceremony can help to show people they are united and that they belong. Ceremonies can motivate us, stimulate our emotions and prompt memories. The positive effects of ceremony are universal across civilizations and are neither specific to age or gender. According to Dr. Kenneth J. Doka, author of Disenfranchised Grief, “ one of the recognitions shared by humans throughout the world and overtime is the importance of ritual”…”In every culture, significant transitions such as births, marriages and deaths have been marked by rituals.” So, why am I talking so much about ceremonies in our society and what is their significance to us as a people as a whole and individuals? Because, I would like to focus on

and talk about the funeral ceremony and how healing it is in our culture and important to us as individuals. Yes, I know some of you are rolling your eyes right now and saying “oh, of course you feel/say that it so important Andy because that is your business. I chose becoming a funeral director and helping families with the deaths of loved ones as my life’s work because I believe in the value of each person’s life and that they mattered. I also strongly believe in the psychological benefit of a funeral service and its importance as the starting point to a person’s grief journey. Simply mention the word “fu-

neral” and it can evoke a wide variety of emotions. For many, the likely response is sadness as the memory of losing a loved one is the first thing that comes to mind. For others, the reaction is one of fear because they have never attended a funeral and know that one day they will be forced to confront this reality. Many other people are likely to respond with a combination of feelings ranging from sorrow to peace of mind as fond memories of a well-planned, personalized funeral that honored their loved one comes to mind. Whether you or your loved one are members of a church or formal religion, are spiritual but not religious, or have other beliefs, a funeral or memorial service is an important way of honoring a person’s life and can be an incredibly powerful source of comfort in the long run to the survivors who are grieving a loss. The three-day festival will feature barbeque teams from around the country showing off their grill skills in a quest for the best barbeque. There will be 61 teams competing for glory and 1st through 5th places in pork, ribs, chicken, and brisket. The top overall scorer will be named the Grand Champion, and the second overall score will be designated the Reserve Grand Champion. The official

s it a bird? Is it a plane? It’s airplane banners flying over the crowded beaches at the Jersey Shore! We see them fly up and down the coastline promoting Wawa's “Hoagie Fest” or on a special occasion, popping

the big question,“Will you marry me?” David Dempsey is the owner of High Exposure Inc in Woodbine NJ. For over 40 years, he has been responsible for the Air Banners from Maryland to Connecticut, and everywhere in between. “Tomorrow we have eight to nine hours up in North Jersey, up the Hudson river, and back into New Jersey across Coney Island,” says Dempsey. Messages that fly behind airplanes have been around since the 40s. “It started with bamboo poles and cotton letters,” explains Dempsey. “Now it’s fiberglass and ripstop nylon.” These banners can range from 3 to 5 stories long! They may look small from the

beach, but they can be extremely large when you are face to face with these billboards. An airplane banner can be used for any and every occasion. Birthday parties and wedding proposals have been seen from our shores. Even Wawa and other national campaigns like sports and festivals have used aerial banners. Anything you want to announce can be arranged with Dempsey and his team. They even offer gender reveal flights where they release a colored powder to make your announcement extra special! Traditional letters for a simple message in the sky come in red and black text. If you want something a bit more fancy, special billboard designs and graphics can be made. Dempsey’s team can help design a banner that is readable from the beach or inland. While on the beach, when you see the next “Happy Anniversary” sign fly by, start thinking about what you want to say by plane!

The Mighty Middle: Creating A Culture of Connection with Christian Correa

hristian Correa describes himself as someone who is infinitely curious. It is his abundant curiosity that has paved the way for his newest podcast venture, The Mighty Middle. Correa, who is launching the podcast to commemorate his 41st birthday, has a deep passion for understanding the intricacies of human connection. As a multidimensional creator, Correa is a gifted visual artist and writer, among several other titles. Through his many artistic outlets, Correa uses his gifts to cultivate opportunities for human connection and spark meaningful conversations. The Mighty Middle is an extension of a deeply rooted desire to inspire wellness in individuals as well as in the community. It hones in on the idea that when we begin to pursue wellness within ourselves, it begins to ripple outward, inspiring wellness in our families, our neighborhoods, and the world around us. The Mighty Middle was created with the intention to create a culture of connection. It is through this connection that Christian aims to peel back the facades, to do away with boxed-in ways of thinking, and create a space where people can come together over hard topics. The goal of each episode is not to have easy conversations, but to bring various perspectives to the table and dissect them in order to come out on the other side with new, more elaborate, perspective-shifting ideas. Correa’s podcast aims to strike a healthy balance on challenging topics such as politics, race relations, entrepreneurship and more. The concepts and ideas at the heart of The Mighty Middle will continue to evolve as the show progresses but will remain centered around creating a culture of connection.

Subsequent episodes will be released weekly on all streaming platforms. Initial podcast guests include author and motivational speaker, Nate Evans Jr, yoga studio owner, Allie Nunzi, and fellow podcast host, Dan Privette. The podcast platform holds space for people to come together and generously share their ideas.
