connection with my loved ones from back then. Like Disney's fictional character, Moana, the ocean calls me. I love it. In fact, I need it. The movement and massiveness of the water soothes my soul unlike anything else. I grew up and married a surfer who also felt a deep connection to the ocean. We settled 10 minutes from the beach and raised our family in this area that I vacationed at as a child. Even better, my parents also moved to the area. Now in their eighties, you can find them sitting on a bench at the Music Pier, sipping their coffee and taking it all in.

Summer is officially here, and summer is our time to shine. The beach is our most beautiful and astounding natural resource. Recreational opportunities are everywhere, from fishing or boating to paddle boarding and surfing. The bay offers jet skiing, parasailing, dolphin cruises, aqua parks and more. Island hopping is alive and well. We can enjoy so many spectacular events and amenities, all within a short drive. From Beachstock in Margate to Art in the Park in Somers Point this weekend, there is so much to take in. In this issue of Shore Local, we check out all the family fun. Whether you're on vacation or live in the area, take a moment to embrace what is before us and make memories with your loved ones. There are countless opportunities at the shore! The Unofficial List of South Jersey seasons Weather By Dan Skeldon

elcome to summer, officially! It began just before midnight last Sunday, and will be with us for the next eighty-something days. It's the favorite season for so many of us, although admittedly I'm a fall fanatic myself. No matter your preference, we all learn early in life that there are of course only four seasons. And here in South Jersey, we're fortunate to have each be quite distinct from the others. But as a meteorologist who has forecasted in South Jersey for the better part of two decades, I actually attest that there are quite a few more than four. It's an unofficial list, but allow me to elaborate: 1) Summer season: Memorial Day to Labor Day by most definitions, a South Jersey summer coincides with the warmest weather and longest days of the year, not to mention the highest concentration of "shoobies" along the shore. 2) Hurricane season: Officially running from June 1st through November 30th, here in South Jersey, it's more like August 15th to October 15th. Most years, that's the meat of the season along our coast, and when we are most likely to be threatened by storms coming up the coast, or

from remnants of storms that hit elsewhere. 3) Local's Summer: Also known as second summer or the shoulder season, it roughly spans from Labor Day evening to Columbus Day. The tourists are largely gone, the ocean water is still warm, and the weather is still pleasant and seldom sticky. And with no traffic and no crowds, this is the favorite time of year for many year-round residents. 4) Fall season: My favorite time of the year, I define it to be the time of the year when the leaves are changing, when we start to look for frosts and freezes at night, and when neither heat nor air conditioning are needed that much. In South Jersey, this can be anywhere from late September through mid-November. 5) Will we have a white Christmas season? More traditionally known as early winter, this is the time of year when everyone wonders what type of winter we will have, and when the first snow will fall. And as the holidays approach, yes, many wonder if dreams for a white Christmas come true this year. This can alternatively be called "Where's the snow season?", which is immediately followed by… 6) Warmth for the holiday season: At least lately, the time around Christmas and New Year's always seems to be mild, if not warm, and sometimes wet. It's a late December into early January thaw of sorts, that is, if we see any early season cold before the holidays at all. 7) No really, where is the snow season?: And after the hustle and bustle of the holidays wraps up, curiosity in the often lack of cold and snow to this point usually peaks in

early to mid-January. That leads many to wonder if we will have a winter at all, where all the snow is, and if climate change means no snow days or cold this year. 8) Finally, it's winter season: Our South Jersey winters seem to come later over the last few decades, often waiting until sometime in January to become established, and frequently lingering longer than most of us would like, sometimes well into March. In fact, some of our snowiest months have been during the month of March over the last 15 years. That leads nicely into… 9) Where is spring season?: And after repeated March snowfalls, extended stretches of cold and cloudy weather, not to mention some biting winds or late season nor'easters, we start to curse ourselves for ever hoping for snow back in the first place. So dreams of snowflakes instead shift to hopes for blue skies and that big, bright orb called the sun that has seemingly disappeared from our skies. 10) Is this really the spring season?: By April into May, we've finally managed to procure some blue skies, and we've gotten rid of the below freezing temperatures. But with the ocean still cold and of course slower to warm up, we're left wondering why the shore is often so chilly and/ or foggy compared to areas farther inland. It's the one time of the year when that ocean breeze can be a minus, keeping the islands 45° and fogged in while the Pinelands soak up 70-something-degree sunshine, just 10 miles away. While nice stretches

of weather are so easy to get in the fall thanks to the warmer ocean, an extended stretch of nice weather in spring is often so difficult to come by. 11) Brush and forest fire season: This overlaps with the previous two seasons, the time after any snow melts and before trees and vegetation greens up each year. When the ground/ brush is dry, the winds are strong, and the relative humidity is low, the fire danger is high. And the Pine Barrens have had some large and destructive fires in the past when conditions are just right. Then once things warm up and green up… 12) When will all this pollen be done season?: Then comes pollen season, when all cars, decks, windows, and any other flat outdoor surfaces are covered with a yellow or green veil. Allergy sufferers are at their most miserable, thanks to a seemingly infinite supply of tree pollen that can linger for weeks or months, depending on rainfall, or lack thereof. And after that, we come full circle, back to the start of summer. Did I miss any? Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

You really can not have too many peachy things during peach season, especially in New Jersey. Frosé Ice Pops

Rosé, popsicles, and summer? Say no more. These are a delicious summer treat from epicurious.com that can be made up to three months in advance. INGREDIENTS: ● 6 ounces strawberries, hulled (about 1 1/2 cups) ● 2 ounces fresh raspberries (about 1/3 cup) ● 1 2/3 cups dry rosé (about half of a 750 ml bottle) ● 1/2 cup ruby red grapefruit juice, preferably fresh ● 2 tablespoons sugar ● 1 cup whole or sliced fresh strawberries and raspberries Special Equipment ● 10 (2.5-ounce) freezer ice-pop molds and sticks

PREPARATION: Purée strawberries, raspberries, rosé, grapefruit juice, and sugar on high speed in a blender until smooth. Strain through a finemesh sieve into a large measuring cup; discard seeds and foam. ● Divide strawberry mixture among ice-pop molds, leaving about 1" space at the top. Freeze until slushy, about 1 hour. Stir with an ice-pop stick, then add fresh berries, stirring to incorporate with the stick. ● Cover molds, insert sticks, and freeze until ice pops are solid, at least 4 hours. Six Ideas for Summer Fun

rom paddleboarding to painting in a local art studio, there are plenty of things to do in our region this summer. Here are some of my favorites. Many are free. 1. Go paddleboarding or kayaking. Despite living near the ocean my entire life, I can’t surf. I thought my inability to surf would prevent me from paddleboarding. However, I find paddleboarding to be a fun way to spend time on the water. Scared of waves? Try it in a lake first before moving on to the sea. Alternatively, choose a paddleboard rental company that offers lessons. Baycats, of Ocean City, is a local rental place that can give you a paddleboard, a life vest, and paddleboarding lessons. Still scared? Try kayaking instead. The important thing is to have fun, and do what makes you feel comfortable. For paddleboard and kayak rentals, check out the Baycats website: https:// www.baycats.com. 2. Visit Cape May. From collecting Cape May diamonds to visiting the Cape May County Zoo, this town has plenty to offer. Sunset Beach is one of the best places to find Cape May

diamonds, which are smooth quartz crystals that wash up on the beach. Shops in Cape May also sell these gems and other souvenirs. The Cape May County Zoo has so much to see, so head over there if you’re looking for some cute animals. The zoo is open everyday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, go to this website: http://www.capemaycountynj.gov/1008/ Park-Zoo. 3. Paint at a local art studio. Paint ceramics at Glazed Over on Asbury Avenue in Ocean City. Bring the whole family and pick anything from mugs to ceramic mermaids to paint. My sister and I always paint tiles. It’s a fun way to spend an hour and leave with a beautiful piece of art. Another place to make art on in Ocean City is Peace of Wood. This local art studio gives visitors a piece of wood to paint however you like. My sister and

I loved going there, and we each left with our respective works of art. Even if you feel like you lack artistic ability, painting is a relaxing activity. I have been frequenting these art studios for years, and I have made plenty of mistakes to laugh at. Yet I keep painting because it is an enjoyable experience regardless of the artistic outcome.

4. Bike on the boardwalk. Wake up early and bike on the Ocean City boardwalk. Then, treat yourself to a cup of coffee or a donut at Ocean City Coffee Company or Drip N' Scoop as a reward for exercising. Alternatively, rent a surrey and ride down the boardwalk with the whole family. You can also bike on the Ventnor or Atlantic City boardwalk, and take a quick dive in the ocean to cool off if it gets too hot. 5. Have a picnic at Kennedy Park in Somers Point. Pack a lunch or bring food from a local eatery. Watch the boats in the bay as you eat. The park has a playground for the kids and plenty of picnic tables to choose from, many with a waterfront view. 6. Fly a kite or play frisbee on the beach. The last time I went to the beach with my family, we bought a cheap plastic frisbee in one of the shops on the Ocean City boardwalk. A few dollars can buy hours of entertainment. These are just a few suggestions for summer fun. Our local area has so many activities to try, but these are some of my favorites.

Gateway Playhouse Ready To Take The Stage Again

he rich history behind Gateway Playhouse Theatre in Somers Point makes its recent rebirth awe-inspiring. The theatre has stood the test of time. The building has served as a home to countless musical productions, a silent movie house, a movie theatre, and so much more. Originally built as a warehouse around 1910, the Gateway Playhouse has gone through several renovations and changes since its inception over 100 years ago. Live performances were reintroduced at Gateway in 1976 under the ownership of Producer Paul Aiken Jr. until his passing in 1999. As the building began to show its age, it was purchased by the City of Somers Point and closed due to structural concerns. Enter the Theater Collaborative of South Jersey, stage left.

The Theatre Collaborative was established to restore the glory at Gateway Playhouse and bring musical productions back to the Jersey Shore. Several board members including James Dalfonso and Karen Sutherland, who had previously performed at Gateway, gathered their resources to bring back their hometown theatre. Along with executive director Keith Cooper, who was working in New York City on Broadway at the time, the Gateway Playhouse rescue-team was formed. The team of four worked together, attending city council meetings and coming up with a plan to restore the theatre. They ultimately were able to purchase the property for near pennies with the caveat that the building would have to be entirely rebuilt from the ground up. Fundraising began full speed ahead including participation in the Pepsi Refresh Project, matching grants from

Shore Medical Center, generous donations from Jim and Isabel Allen, and the help of the community. Eventually, the theatre reconstruction team raised enough money to begin renovation. After a grueling 10 years and $1.3 million, the Gateway Playhouse reopened its doors in 2017 with a performance by Andrea McArdle, the original Annie. The Gateway Playhouse was operating in full swing, entirely debt free, with a regular lineup of shows. Right up until COVID shut everything down, which took a great toll on the theatre industry. The board of directors, volunteers , and staff at Gateway Playhouse are cautiously optimistic as the doors are reopened this summer. Under the direction of Philip Pallito, they’ve relaunched the Gateway to the Arts summer intensive educational program. Gateway to the Arts is a program created to empower the youth through theatre. Students, ranging from ages 9-18, are taught how the role of art and theatre can help them to become better all-around people. What goes into education during the summer intensive is far beyond the performance itself. They are taught about stage dynamics and the technology that goes into a production. Throughout the summer, students are offered valuable life lessons such as how to listen to people, trust their team members, and show up for one another. Each summer, the intensive program culminates in several live performances. This summer, the groups will be working on a production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma as well as Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance. The staff at Gateway Playhouse, who have all worked in show business in some capacity, are inspired year after year, as they pass their knowledge and experience to the next generation of theatre enthusiasts.

Beyond the summer intensive performances, Gateway Playhouse offers year-round entertainment. Shows include monthly open mic style, piano bar nights featuring pianist Michael McAssey as well as an upcoming performance by Joe Conklin and The City Rhythm Orchestra. 2021 Airshow Returns To Atlantic City

he Greater Atlantic City Chamber is pleased to announce the return of the Atlantic City Airshow “A Salute to Those Who Serve,” presented by GEICO on Wednesday, August 18, 2021. The 18th Annual event will feature the U. S. Air Force Thunderbirds as the headline act. “We are thrilled to host the 2021 Atlantic City Airshow and we are so grateful for our partners and supporters who have returned to help make all the moving parts of this event come together and run smoothly,” said Greater Atlantic City Chamber President, Michael Chait. “The marketing firepower and reach of Meet AC and the graciousness of Borgata to once again provide rooms for the performers enable us to once again put on a first-rate show.” The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are debuting a new demonstration to the public for the first time in nearly 40 years during their 2021 performance schedule. The new demonstration comes after the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled a majority of the 2020 season, giving the team time to enhance their maneuvers. The performance centers around emotion and entertainment, while still showcasing the complexity, challenge and capabilities of the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the men and women who fly them. The U.S. Airforce is also sending the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team to the Atlantic City Airshow. The F-22 Raptor is the Air Force’s premier 5th generation fighter

The Mass Exit show consists of multiple jumpers exiting the aircraft and forming a geometric shape, often with smoke canisters employed for additional crowd effect. Also returning are the GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team. The team flies six WWII era aircraft, the North American SNJ and the T-6 Texan variant. Both were used as advanced training aircraft to prepare pilots of “The Greatest Generation” for WWII. The team performs a low-level, precision demonstration that features maneuvers and tactics flown by the United States military. Browns Restaurant: Over 40 Years of Family, Tradition and Donuts By Steffen Klenk

n a sunny Friday morning, over a dozen people stand in line outside of Browns Restaurant in Ocean City. This Ocean City eatery is best known for their hot and fresh donuts made every day. Somers Point resident Cindy Chanese and granddaughter Ali Antonell of Long Valley, PA, picked up their order before going to the beach. “We love it,” Cindy says. And they are not the only ones. Their donuts have attracted both the locals and visitors

that frequent the bustling shore town every summer. Melissa Brown is the co-owner of the North End eatery, along with her husband Jim. Melissa says it has become a yearly tradition for families. “We see the kids and then they grow up, they have their kids and they come back and have their first donut. It’s a really neat thing to be part of.” The restaurant has been in operation since 1976. It was first opened by Jim’s parents, Marjorie and Harmon Brown, who were teachers in Orland, PA. After noticing several donut stands in the area, the Browns invested in their first donut machine, and it worked, according to Melissa Brown. “ Eve r y t h i n g is homemade. The toppings are homemade, and they’re made to order hot off the press,”

There are seven flavors that go into a Browns donut. Their most popular flavor, according to Brown,

is cinnamon sugar. “Dad used to call it a sand donut because it looks like sand.” They also have vanilla, chocolate, powdered sugar, honey glazed and plain donuts. The Browns’ son, James, and nephews Alex and Luke, were hard at work taking orders and delivering donuts to hungry customers. “We’ve all been working together for the last several years now, so we get to know each other,” James Brown says. It’s not just donuts that make this iconic location popular. They also serve breakfast and lunch daily with menu items ranging from Pancakes to Omlettes, French Toast and Belgain Waffles, even their mouthwatering cheese steak. “We have certain people only come in for our burgers and Sloppy Joe,” says Brown. “We know when they’re coming in and know what they want.” With over 40 years of expertise and three generations in the business, the Browns have been keeping the family name in the busi-

Finally, consult with those who have gone before us. When I first planted my garden, I gobbled up gardening books from the library like I was researching for a thesis. Along came the internet, and now the information at our fingertips is limitless. One of my favorite sources of information from fellow gardeners is gardening social media groups like South Jersey Gardener’s Group or New Jersey Gardeners on Facebook. Members can share pictures or ask questions, and gardeners eagerly share advice. You

can also join a local gardening club like the Offshore Garden Club or the Green Thumb Garden Club. Another on-line source for information is farmersalmanac.com. ngie Gant has always had a love for jewelry. She used to make jewelry or do some type of crafting for fun in the evenings, and eventually decided to try something a bit more challenging and fulfilling. Angie began han d - s t amping jewelry seven yea r s a go, selling her creations to friends and f a m il y. It was then she realized she wanted to turn her hobby into a business and established Jewelry With Words. Hand-stamping is a process by which a metal blank is marked with lettering and small designs. Stainless steel stamps are struck by a hammer, creating the impressions. This old-fashioned process takes a lot of practice and, according to Angie, can often result in wasted metal blanks (not to mention sore thumbs) from poorly placed hammer strikes. But sore thumbs and an over-full recycling bin aside, Angie loves hand-stamping. It allows her to personalize and customize each piece. She sometimes finds inspiration for her creations online, staying on

top of trends and searching for sentiments to empower those who wear her jewelry. You can find words of encouragement such as, “I am enough”, “Just breathe”, “Be the change”, and many more. And what would customized jewelry handmade at the South Jersey coast be without plenty of beach-inspired designs? Although she originally hails from Kansas, Angie moved to this area when she was 20 and eventually settled down in nearby Egg Harbor Township 18 years ago. She has been married to her husband for 25 years and they have two daughters together, ages 20 and 18. They are a family of true animal lovers with one cat and three dogs, including their beloved 14-year-old Golden Retriever. Angie’s hand-stamping can be found on adjustable aluminum cuff bracelets, rings, and toe rings, necklaces and charm bracelets, and key chains. Delicious & Easy Ideas for a Summer Cookout

Ingredients: ● 1 Bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue Sauce ● 1 Stick of Butter ● 2 packets of Italian Seasoning ● Dash of Basil ● 14 Chicken Drumsticks How To: ● Preheat Oven to 350° (you will use the grill a little later). ● In a large saucepan, melt the butter. Add in Italian Seasoning, Basil and Barbecue Sauce. Bring to a Boil. ● Dip the drumsticks into the sauce mixture. (There should be a good amount left over for later) and place in a 9×13 pan. ● Bake in the oven for 30 minutes. ● Remove Drumsticks from the oven and dip them one more time in the barbecue sauce. Then place them on a preheated grill for an additional 15-20 minutes. Notes: You can fully cook the chicken in the oven if you prefer, simply increase the baking time to 45 minutes or until chicken is done.

Mexican Street Corn - the ultimate side dish

Fresh corn is cooked, then slathered with mayo, topped with cotija cheese, and dusted with chili powder. First, grill it for a nice charred flavor. Then top it with a light layer of a creamy cilantro mayo. Coat it with the classic salty cotija, dusted with chili powder and pepper. When finished add a spritz of fresh lime for one last layer of flavor. Mexican Street Corn Ingredients ● Yellow sweet corn ● Mayonnaise ● Cilantro ● Garlic ● Cayenne pepper ● Cotija cheese ● Ancho chili powder ● Lime wedges How to Make Mexican Street Corn ● Preheat a grill over medium-high heat. ● Stir together mayonnaise, cilantro, garlic, cayenne pepper. ● Place cotija cheese in a shallow dish long enough to fit corn. ● Grill until charred on all sides, turning every few minutes, about 8 min.

Brush corn with mayo mixture, roll in cotija and sprinkle with spices. Serve with limes if desired

To make the patties, place everything together into a bowl (minus the bread crumbs and egg listed), mix thoroughly and then shape into your burger patties. If the patty isn’t staying together, add the bread crumbs and/or egg to the mix and try again. They will help keep your patty together. Ingredients ● 1 pound ground turkey ● 1 large ripe avocado - cut into chunks or gently mashed ● 1 tbsp minced garlic ● 1 tsp chili powder ● 1/2 tsp pepper ● 1/3 cup bread crumbs (optional if needed to hold patty together better)

1 egg (optional if needed to hold patty together better) Instructions Add all your ingredients (minus the bread crumbs and egg) to a large bowl and gently mix together. If patties seem really moist and won't form together well for you, add 1/3 cup bread crumbs and/ or an egg. Shape into 1/2" thick patties. Prepare your grill with cooking spray or oil. Coat well! Heat grill on high. Add turkey burgers and cook for about 5 minutes on each side. If the patty doesn't want to come off the grill, try letting it cook for a few minutes more. Flipping too soon can cause it to fall apart. Cook patties until they reach 165 degrees F. ●

illed as the "Planet's Biggest Beach Party," Beachstock 2021 returns to Margate on June 26, 2021. Held from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the beach between Granville and Huntington Avenues, Beachstock 2021 has activities for children and adults alike. With food, live entertainment, crafts, vendors, cornhole, volleyball, a family movie, a beach bonfire and more, Beachstock 2021 has a full day of events lined up. As an added bonus, Beachstock is a free beach tag day. In its tenth year, Beachstock is organized by the Margate Business Association, a non-profit organization run by local volunteers in the community. "Ten years ago we looked at each other and said we're a beach town, and we don't throw a beach party," said MAB President Ed Berger. And thus Beachstock was born. What started out as an idea has grown into an event that "really helps

reinforce the image of Margate," said Berger. "It really brings people in from neighboring towns." Meet Miss New Jersey, Alyssa Sullivan By Donald B. Kravitz

wenty-five year old Cape May Cour t House resident, Alyssa Sullivan took the stage at Resorts Casino Hotel among 31 additional contestants. She appeared on the First Night of Preliminaries in the On Stage Question/Impact Pitch and Red Carpet (Evening Gown). At he end of the evening, Alyssa Sullivan had been selec ted the winner of the On Stage Question/Impact Pitch category, beginning her hopes of winning the crown. The second night of Preliminaries Sullivan performed a vocal in the

Talent portion of the competition and once again, when all the votes were tallied, Alyssa Sullivan was once again selected the winner in Talent. Finals night, Saturday June 19, 2021 brought all 32 competitors to the stage as the judges selected the final ten which included Sullivan and an additional

contestant as the People’s Choice making the field the final eleven. All eleven competitors faced off in The On Stage Question/Impact Pitch, Red Carpet (Evening Gown) and Talent portions of the pageant. When all the performances were completed, it became incumbent on the 7 judges to pare down from the Top Eleven to the Top Five contestants. With the announcement of Sullivan, who had been selected as one of the Final Five, they moved on to the last category, the on stage question from the judges. Alyssa Sullivan had finished in the Top Five in the 2019 Miss New Jersey Competition but was not selected as Miss New Jersey. As the Top Five stood on stage, waiting to hear their name called as 4th Runner-Up; 3rd Runner-up; 2nd Runner-up finally narrowing the choice down to who would be the 1st Runner-Up and who would be chosen Miss New Jersey 2021, the 2 finalists, Miss Seaside Counties 2021 Thushara Korattyil and Miss Seashore Line 2021 Alyssa Sullivan stood facing each other in a hug and waited for a name to be announced. The emcee spoke slowly and clearly when rendering the judges decision that the 1st Runner-Up was Miss Seaside Counties 2021, Thushara Korattyil and winner of the competition for Miss New Jersey 2021 was Miss Seashore Line 2021 ... Alyssa Sullivan. It took a minute for the announcement to take hold by Sullivan, but when it did, she descended down on the floor in disbelief. We Need Leadership NOW! Jeff's Journal By Jeff Whitaker

hat is missing in today's leadership development and training? Last week I told you about an article in the Harvard Business Review. The authors of the article believe that a lot of methods of leadership training brought into companies by consultants today are really outdated and ineffective. And I tend to agree. If you look at a lot of what is taught, it’s theory and more management practices and one size fits all style of learning. What the authors argue for is something they call PLC or personal learning cloud. And PLC is made up of four characteristics. The first is that learning needs to be personalized. In other words, it’s not a one size fits all for a

company or even individual leaders within that company. It’s the realization that everyone has a different learning style. The Second is that learning is socialized. Learning happens best when learners collaborate and help one another. When I work with teams in leadership development, I make sure there is plenty of time for open discussion and feedback on the material we cover. I also recommend holding regular discussions to learn from one another. Interaction is key to growing individually and as a team when it comes to leadership. There are two other ways this article addresses leadership development. The third characteristic of PLC is that learning is contextualized. Professional development on the job is crucial to making the maximum impact with leaders. Leaders or potential leaders need to learn in a workplace setting with information, concepts and tools they can pick up and actually apply right away. Finally, learning outcomes need to be transparently tracked and in some cases authenticated. In other words, leaders need

to concentrate on more specialized areas of expertise not just gaining generalized degrees and certifications. Individual skills and training need to be pursued and companies need to be able to experience real, positive outcomes and change as a result. It’s that real world, practical STUFF that has to come out of today's training. I know the word STUFF doesn’t sound very professional or Harvard Business like but maybe that’s the point. We don’t have time today for theories and white paper analysis. Today's leaders have to have the tools in their hands to come out of the gate full steam ahead with practical ideas and resources to hit the ground

running. Leaders are desperately needed in government, the workplace, our communities and the home. The times we live in demand it. Jeff Whitaker is a veteran broadcaster here in South Jersey.. Meet Cover Band, Petty Cash Shore Local Talent By Krystle J. Bailey

friendship that began over a shared love of surfing and craft beer was the catalyst for South Jersey’s favorite cover band duo, Petty Cash. Bryan McCloud and Matt Wira met over a decade ago working at Mainland Regional Highschool where they quickly became friends. Bonding over similar lifestyles, including a shared passion for playing guitar, the two began spending time outside of work. Regularly performing at open mic nights in Cape May, the duo began combining performances to buy themselves more stage time. One open mic night led to the next and as fate would have it, Bryan and Matt quickly became one of South Jersey’s most sought-after cover bands. In 2019, with over 30 songs in their repertoire, they decided it was time

to hit the stage. One call changed everything for Matt and Bryan. On a summer evening in 2019, the staff at Yesterday’s in Marmora was looking to fill a slot in their entertainment schedule. Bryan and Matt had never played together for more than an hour but, trusting what the universe had in store for them, they said yes to a 4-hour performance. Daily Happy Hour 3pm-7pm & 3am-7am

That first gig, nerve-wracking as it was for both of them, was the launching pad for summers full of local performances. Bryan described the first show as a blur, stating, “I kind of floated through that first performance. I don’t remember the night as much as the feeling after. It’s like you’re riding a natural high for a little bit.” After the first gig, the pair made the decision to invest in themselves. They took the little bit of money they made from their performance and invested it back into better equipment. From that point, there was no looking back. They had invested time and money into what they describe as a remarkable summer job. Family, friends, and coworkers all got on board to spread the word and help book gigs. Petty Cash began performing regularly at local restaurants and bars throughout the rest of Summer 2019 and right up until the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Like almost everything in 2020, they had to cancel their nine summer shows last year. As the world begins to come back to life post-Covid, Petty Cash is back on the road with 28 live performances booked this summer. The duo performs 100% cover music, ranging from Prince to Pearl Jam, Johnny Cash to Billie Eilish, and beyond. With 50+ songs in their setlists, Bryan and Matt aim to please the masses with their performances. Their name, Petty Cash, is a double entendre, playing on their love

of Tom Petty and Johnny Cash as well as their humorous reference to their less than desirable salaries as teacher’s aides. Matt and Bryan, both husbands and fathers, feel incredibly fortunate to be able to provide a fun-loving, musically inspired atmosphere across South Jersey. When asked about their future, both of them explain that they are just enjoying the ride and taking this journey day-by-day. “We never really saw ourselves being able to do this. It’s all very surreal, so right now just enjoying every moment of it,” explained Matt. “As long as we don’t have to wait tables or teach summer school anymore, that’s the goal,” Bryan added. o, I went to my first concert “post pandemic” the other night as I took my girlfriend Susan to see “Get The Led Out” at the Ocean City Music Pier on Monday night. I can’t say enough good things about that band and really the experience as a whole. From getting the second to last spot in the municipal parking lot on Moorlyn, to being inside the concert hall at the music pier with other Zeppelin fans, to the quality of the music in the 2 hour and 15 minute show, it was AWESOME! Which is the same thing I could be writing about the Phillies. They lost four out of six on a West Coast road trip against the Dodgers and the Giants. More importantly, #1 starter Aaron Nola seems to be getting worse and the next six games are against the Washington Nationals and division leading New York Mets. A few things to address with the Phillies as this could be the “make or break” week for them. Two at home with the Nationals before they go to Citi Field for a 4-game series with the Mets. New York is the only team in the NL East with a winning record, and they have stellar ace Jacob DeGrom who saw his E.R.A. drop to a miniscule 0.50 after his last start. Under the new baseball rules, the umpires checked DeGrom’s hat, glove and even his belt for any sticky stuff or foreign substance. Mets fans booed. Expect much of the same as the Phillies host the Nats at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies biggest problem is that they can’t win on the road. Joe Girardi’s team is 21-12 at home as

I write this, but a pathetic 13-23 on the road. They are often careless with the baseball, averaging 0.61 errors per game, which is in the top half of the rankings. For comparison, Boston leads all of baseball with 0.72 errors per game. What my little league coach used to tell me, still holds true at the major league level. “You can’t give the opponent extra OUTS!” So, you could argue the Phillies are at a crossroads right now. A good week, and they’re still in it, but with the trade deadline still more than five weeks away, it’s hard to imagine Dave Dombrowski being in a buyer’s

mood if his team is under .500 and five, six, or even eight games back. That’s what a bad week can do. Stay tuned. Speaking of courage, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib became the first active NFL player to come out as gay last Monday when he posted to Instagram from his house in West Chester, Pennsylvania and also announced he would be donating $100,000 to the Trevor Project. The Trevor Project provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to the LGBTQ+ community. It commended Nassib's announcement, saying in a statement that his donation will help it "scale our life-saving crisis services to reach the more than 1.8 million LGBTQ youth who seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S." I would just like to add to this and write “Way to go Carl!” Nassib first came to my attention when he was featured on “Hard Knocks” on HBO during his time with the Cleveland Browns. You may also recall that former Missouri linebacker Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted in NFL history in 2014, when the Rams took him 249th overall. He was cut by the team at the end of training camp that year and never played a regular-season game in the NFL. From golf, can we address the finish of the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines on Father’s Day? WOW, what a finish... as Jon Rahm made back-to-back birdies on 17 & 18 to win the U.S. Open by one shot over hard-luck runner-up Louis Oosthuizen. No one had ever birdied the last two holes to win the U.S. Open by 1 shot in the previous 120 editions of the toughest test in golf until Rahm's storybook finish. Bourré Hosts its Country Music Concert Series Every Sunday Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

am sure most of you have noticed several different live music events popping up around South Jersey, and with many being the first in over a year for the respective venue or band. Things are definitely looking promising for the entertainment industry this summer, and I could not be more excited! An event I am particularly excited about is the Country Fest series at Bourré Beach (201 S New York Avenue, Atlantic City), which takes place

every Sunday throughout the summer. Each week, Bourré AC will be hosting a plethora of different country music cover acts, with gates opening at 5 pm and live music starting at 5:30 pm. Organizer, Bernie Dillon, said, “The Country Fest is a summer long series featuring the best of our

local country music cover bands. It is something that, combined with Bourré’s great barbecue menu, has all the ingredients of an amazing party.”

On the bill are artists such as Derek Crider, a local artist with Motown and Country roots; Big Hix, a non-stop high-energy tribute band covering artists like Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, and Johnny Cash; and Six Pack Rodeo who deliver fun and engaging performances of outlaw country mixed with classic rock. The different acts include those with original music as well as those singing modern and classic country favorites. While you are there, be sure to grab a delicious plate of southern Cajun barbeque washed down with an expertly crafted cocktail or seasonal draft beer. Bourré will also offer their full menu on, which features a selection of smaller bites such as fried alligator sausage, or burgers and sandwiches including a succulent pulled pork sandwich and the juicy Dixie chicken burger. Charlie attended the opening weekend and gushed over the great night she and her husband had, “It was a great night! Great music,

amazing food, and fantastic vibes all night long. My husband ate the Cajun BBQ and said it was phenomenal. I opted for the Gator burger because I had alligator since I was last in New Orleans, LA, and it honestly felt like I was back there! We will definitely be back a couple more times before the summer is over!”

Bourré has established itself as a pillar of the newest Atlantic City entertainment scene, often hosting live events and featuring some of the best barbeque you will find outside of the southern states. here is no right or wrong way to drink whisky. I have mentioned this before, and will likely mention it again because it’s worth repeating. There are, however, right and wrong ways to store and care for whisky, as well as some grey areas in between. Right or Wrong: Lay a bottle of whisky on its side to keep the cork wet. You’ve bought that very expensive bottle of whisky and plan to keep it sealed for a special occasion that is potentially years away. So you decide to lay it on its side to keep the cork wet just like a fine bottle of wine. If you currently have a bottle of whisky stored on its side please stop reading and turn it upright before continuing. Why is this so critical? Mostly because whisky is significantly higher in ABV than wine. A cork soaked in whisky for years on end will not fare well. When the cork breaks down, which it will, then the whisky can easily leak out. This is about as bad of a result as I can imagine! Stand those bottles upright! The cork will most likely be fine even after decades of storage. On the rare occasion the cork falls apart when you do go to open the bottle, it’s nothing a pass through cheesecloth can’t handle. Right or Wrong: Whisky goes bad. Wine goes bad. Beer goes bad. Milk goes bad. Whisky….. Well…. It's complicated. Whisky does not oxidize the way that wine does. It can’t go flat like beer, and will never spoil like milk. That being said, a bottle of whisky that has been opened for a long period of time can tend to taste different. The reason for this has more to do with the empty space

inside the bottle than oxygen interaction. Every time you pull out the cork, you allow some alcohol vapor to escape. This problem is compounded when there is very little liquid left in the bottle. The whisky won’t go bad, but you may notice that it begins to taste dull or muted. You may even begin to notice flavors that you don’t care for. So how can you keep your open whisky tasting great for years to come? There are a few options! Downsize your bottle to 375 ml, 200 ml, or even smaller, decreasing the amount of air inside. This is the simplest solution. Use glass bottles! You can spray dense inert Argon gas into the bottle to settle on top of the whisky creating a gas shield of sorts. This is common in wine storage as well. Marbles! I have heard some people use marbles to take up the extra space inside the bottle. I personally haven’t tried this technique yet but the logic is sound! Just make sure the marbles, or whatever you add, isn’t something that will interact with the spirit. Right or Wrong: Whisky bottles are gorgeous and should be displayed for all to see! Yes they are! Just make sure they are kept away from sunlight. UV rays are bad for lots of things, even whisky. The best place to store whisky is in a dark cabinet. But if you have to display them, just choose the location wisely. Whisky is tough but it’s not invincible. Care for it properly and it will stand the test of time.

What do I need a death certificate for? (Part 5)

he last of this series points out how the certificate can affect the family indirectly. A signed death certificate is needed in order to get a permit from the state to bury or cremate someone. On top of that, if the deceased needs to be sent across state lines for services a transit permit is needed to transport the deceased legally and you need a signed death certificate to procure that. One final need that death certificates are helpful for is genealogy. The information that is contained on this document is invaluable to people who are tracing their linage. So if you’re concerned about your ancestry then it is a good idea to order an extra death certificate for this purpose. Speaking of ordering death certificates that bring up two questions, first how much are they and second

where do you get them? The cost for death certificates varies for each state and for each city. For example, in New Jersey the first death certificate is fifteen dollars and then ten dollars each after that. In Pennsylvania, they are 20 dollars each, Florida they are sixteen dollars each, so you get the idea. In answer to the second question death certificates may be obtained through your local funeral director, (like me) when making funeral arrangements. You can also order copies of death certificates from the office of Vital Statistics and Registry at their office, online or through the mail. You can also obtain copies from the local vital records office in the municipality where the death occurred. Again, the fees for the death certificates will vary for each municipality. One final question about death certificates is who can get them? In some states, death certificates are considered public domain documents and they can be obtained by any individual regardless of the requestor’s relationship to the deceased, this is not the case in New Jersey. Some states might offer “informational copies” that can be requested by

the general public, California, for example, makes informational copies of the death certificate available to everyone. In some states its common for death certificates to become public only after a certain period of time has passed, usually a few decades,

again the exact time period would vary from state to state. In other states, only a legal representative, a spouse, parent, child, or sibling of the deceased may obtain a copy of the death certificate, like New Jersey. In these instances, proof of relation to the decedent is required when submitting the application. Siblings typically need to provide a copy of their birth certificate showing parental relationship to the dece-

dent. Legal representatives need to provide documentation proving the death certificate is needed for the determination of property rights. Also, legal representatives are typically required to include a letter stating whom they represent and how they are related to the person named on the record when requesting the copies of the death certificate. As you can see there is a lot to think about when it comes to the certified copy of the death certificate. It is more than just legal proof that someone is dead, it serves many purposes. It is especially useful and important for an executor/executrix of an estate to have to settle a deceased’s affairs from notifying mortgage lenders and creditors to claiming life insurance and pension benefits. I make it a point to go over all of these issues with my families when they ask me “what do I need a death certificate for? See you in the next article. Andrew B. Many buyers may be willing to wait for a new home rather than settling for an existing home that they're not in love with. Timing is one of the most important factors when deciding whether or not to list. With a return to more social and market conditions, many sellers who've been holding their breath waiting for the perfect time to sell may decide to list their home. Waiting too long can complicate pricing of the home to sell. Some sellers may find themselves settling for far less than they expected from their home sale. Buyers with more options won't be as inclined to participate in multiple offer bidding wars and will almost certainly be expecting to negotiate contingencies and repairs. onni Robinson is a wife, mother, and newly published author. Her first memoir, Out of the Pantry: A Disordered Eating Journey, chronicles her decades-long struggle with disordered eating. Through her raw and honest story of recovery, Ronni hopes to shed light on a topic that has often been considered taboo. Her story highlights some of her deepest thoughts in relation to food addiction and the rocky road to recovery. Ronni’s deeply insightful stories offer readers a glimpse into the mind of someone with disordered eating behavior, which in Ronni’s case manifested as compulsive overeating. Ronni’s story began as a child. She grew up in a dysfunctional home that lacked love, affection, and especially communication. Robinson recalls her journey with food-based shame beginning at nine years old, when her mother began hiding cookies from her without any discussion. In their home, she was taught that women do not make waves, ask questions, or stir the pot in any way. So, after

asking her mother about the cookie “situation” once, she vowed to never bring it up again. At the tender age of nine, Ronni began hiding her eating from her parents. Ronni found herself beginning to eat as much food as possible in each sitting and buying or finding food in secret. As food became more accessible throughout Ronni’s adolescence and young adulthood, the binge eating behavior evolved exponentially. Throughout her young adult life, through an abusive first marriage, and well into her current marriage, Ronni continued to binge in secret, and in shame. For decades, Ronni felt that she was alone in this behavior. She truly believed that it was something only she did and that no one else could understand. One fateful evening, she discovered a website for “compulsive overeating” and that is where her journey to recovery began. Ronni felt truly seen for the first time in her adult life. The sigh of relief that came with realizing she was not alone was matched with a deep level of grief when she recognized that she needed to get help as well as be honest with her family. After penning a letter to her current husband that spilled her truth, Ronni took the steps toward recovery that she knew were necessary. She sought therapy, began reading books about disordered eating and recovery, and joined Overeaters Anonymous (OA).

Ronni had been a freelance writer since her freshman year in college. She was no stranger to telling the stories of others so, in the beginning stages of her recovery, she began to tell her own story. Her 2008 blog chronicled the rollercoaster of emotions, pervasive thoughts, and hard truths that came with the road to healing. Though she had found an incredibly supportive group of other bloggers, after a year Ronni knew it was time to let the blog go in order to continue her recovery journey. The thought had occurred to Ronni to pen a book, however she was adamant about waiting to ensure that her recovery was legitimate and lasting. Though she understood that recovery from any addiction is not linear or straight forward, it was important for Ronni to find a good stride in her healing before publishing her memoir. Eight years after she first stepped foot into therapy, Ronni decided it was time to begin writing. What would ultimately become Out of the Pantry, began with collecting all of the blogs that Ronni

had written years prior. Through the grueling process of writing a memoir, Ronni studied the stories written by others about their addictions, finding common threads to her own addictive behaviors. She worked closely with memoir experts, editors, and proofreaders to bring to life her 2020 publication, Out of the Pantry: A Disordered Eating Journey. It is Ronni Robinson’s hope that anyone struggling with disordered eating behavior will be reminded that they are not alone and that there is a way out. Help is available and therapy is life changing. There is a community of love and support out there for everyone, no matter the struggle or addiction.
