Once the twins were born, Bob and Father’s Day is a tribute to all those I had three children under the age of busy Dads who sacrifice and prioritize their kids ahead of all else. can be confused, uncertain, and make mistakes. Yet despite their faults, real dads love their children and do the best they can, day in and day out.

Sometimes a Mom has to take on the role of Dad too. These Super Moms deserve our highest respect, because I know that is not easy.

I've been blessed. I grew up with a great Dad and my children also had a wonderful Dad. Growing up in the early 70's, my father was a great provider and it was clear that was his primary role. But he also never missed a family vacation or school event. He told great stories and was playful by nature. My parents had a clear division of roles. I knew from an early age that the buck stopped with my Dad. If things got too out of hand or it became too much

for my mom, my dad would be called in to settle it. I can still hear my mom saying "I'm telling your father." That never failed to straightened my brothers and I up, real fast!

A Father’s love shows up in many ways over the course of a lifetime. Fathers offer support and stability as kids navigate the often bumpy road toward adulthood. One of the coolest things about my Dad was seeing him become a Pop-pop to my kids. He showered them with love and attention, offering them unique experiences and perspectives as they grew. When my son was diagnosed with autism, my Dad rose to challenge heroically, even relocating to be closer so he could lend a hand. Although my son had very limited verbal skills, that didn't stop my Dad from finding a way to bond with him. For years, my Dad would pick up Jamie every Friday afternoon to go out for pizza. He was and remains a very special Pop-pop.

We hope all the dads in your life have a very Happy Father's Day, filled with love and gratitude.

Mother Nature Taught Me Some Tough Lessons A meteorologist's greatest misses

I

may have graduated from Cornell with my degree in meteorology way back in 1998. Yet with 23 years under my belt as a meteorologist, my education nevertheless still continues to this day. Sure, it's not my college professors playing the role of my instructor, rather Mother Nature teaching me the occasionally difficult lesson. I've forecasted for South Jersey since the winter of 2002, and for eastern Pennsylvania since the summer of 2015, and there have been some humbling predictions along the way, for every type of weather and in every season. My reaction to any blown forecast is always the same however: First, accept blame, then second, learn from your mistake. And I think the public respects a meteorologist who

can admit they are wrong sometimes.

Yet eating some humble pie and conducting an autopsy of a bad forecast still doesn't stop the hate mails from flowing. Some say I should find a new line of work, one that involves asking "do you want fries with that?"

Some attacks focus on the field of meteorology itself, like the classic "you have the only job you can be wrong at 90% of the time and not get fired!".

While I actually think we get it right closer to 90 percent of the time, I digress. Other attacks are more personal, occasionally harsh, and not fit to print. God bless those aforementioned college professors for first teaching us to develop a thick skin for the impending flood of lifelong criticism.

I bring this up as Mother Nature taught me one of her tough to swallow lessons on a recent Friday, one when I had forecast a few showers with little measurable rain and much of the area proceeded to get a two-inch soaking.

Honestly, it was one of the biggest rainfall busts of my career. Now busting a rain forecast doesn't solicit quite the flurry of responses that a similarly bad snow forecast would have. Yet it got me thinking to my top three fore-

cast faux pas in South Jersey over the last two decades.

1) The Blizzard That Wasn't (late January 2015): It was my first day forecasting for The Press of Atlantic City, after over a decade at NBC40 before it went off-air. And you never get a second chance to make a first impression. So lucky for me, a major Nor'easter developed to provide me a high-profile chance to accurately forecast my favorite type of weather: snow. Our computer model guidance was going gangbusters, some printing out two to three feet of snow from Cape May to Cape Cod. Yet as luck would have it, the storm developed 50 miles further east than expected.

While 50 miles doesn't sound like much, it ended up being the difference between three feet of snow in New England and a dusting in South Jersey.

My forecast, for the record, was for 15 to 20 inches of snow. So I was only off by 15 to 20 inches. Schools were canceled in advance, and much of the area was shutdown, for a dusting of snow. It's true that a meteorologist can accurately forecast ten winter storms in a row with great precision.

But people always remember the one you miss. Granted, this was as big of a swing and a miss as is possible. So it's worth remembering.

2) The Hurricane That Wasn't (Labor Day Weekend of 2016): Well actually, Hermine was a hurricane over Florida, but was expected to be a tropical storm by the time it reached the waters east of New Jersey. The forecast called for a very slow loop of a strong tropical system off our coast, one that could deliver a storm surge

and coastal flooding on the level of Hurricane Sandy to our coast on a holiday weekend nonetheless. Some evacuations were ordered, beach concerts were canceled, and the worst was feared. In reality, Hermine also remained farther off the coast, and little impact was felt. The economic impacts were much greater, and added to the sting.

3) The Derecho That Was (late June of 2012): It can go the other way as well, when a storm turns out much more severe than expected. So was the case with our late June derecho.

We're coming up on the nine-year anniversary of the once-in-a-generation storm, which I'll devote an entire upcoming column to. But a night that I thought would bring some scattered pockets of 60mph winds to a few municipalities in South Jersey instead brought widespread 75 to 100mph winds to the better part of three counties. In the middle of the night no less.

So yes, some pretty prolific misses, and colorful emails and messages along the way. And yes, my education continues to this day, and always will.

He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Ocean City Pops to Perform Free Outdoor Concert on July 3

s part of a festive Fourth of July weekend, the Ocean City Pops will perform a free outdoor concert at 7:30 p.m. on July 3 at Carey Stadium.

The legendary local orchestra will perform patriotic classics and audience favorites in honor of our nation’s birthday.

The concert at Carey Stadium is a first for the Ocean City Pops, and it will give people of all ages a chance to hear the Pops, perhaps for the first time. Bring a beach chair or blanket to sit on the field, and there will be seating available in the bleachers. Carey Stadium is behind Ocean City High School between the beach blocks of Fifth Street and Sixth Street The concert will be a great addition to a holiday weekend that will include a bike parade and kite-flying competition on July 4 with the celebration capped off by a 9 p.m. fireworks display launched from a barge off Ninth Street Beach.

Don McLean will kick off the weekend with a little “American Pie” in a Music Pier concert on July 2, and

Cacio e Pepe – Simple Yet Complex

L

ast year when the Pandemic shut down almost all restaurants and dining out came to a screeching halt, people started craving comfort foods and began making them at home. And many of those comfort foods were, of course, Italian.

One of the most googled recipes during that period was the Roman dish, Cacio e Pepe. In Italian cacio e pepe translates to “cheese and pepper,” and its ingredients are just that — Pecorino Romano cheese (a sheep’s milk cheese), black pepper and spaghetti. It’s believed that shepherds were the first to make this dish because they could make the cheese on the spot and carried the pasta and pepper with them – no refrigeration required.

This recipe was popular during the Pandemic because it used ingredients most everyone had in their pantry and refrigerator. But some-

times recipes that have the fewest ingredients and very simple instructions can be the most challenging.

Think of a scrambled egg. Many well-known chefs have said they use scrambled eggs and/or omelettes to see how good a cook's technique is. Making a true French style omelette is one of the most difficult techniques in cooking. It requires exceptional mastery of heat, timing, and coordination to be done right.

And it’s the same with Cacio e Pepe.

First, because the ingredients are so simple, the quality of each really matters. You must start with fresh, black peppercorns, crack or grind them, and then toast slightly to give the peppery flavor depth and complexity. The ground pepper you buy in tin will not work well in this recipe.

Freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese – not Parmesan – is traditional for this recipe. Pecorino Romano is saltier and a bit stronger that Parmesan and pairs beautifully with the pepper. And if you grate it on a Microplane instead of shredding it you will have greater success.

And you must start with dried pasta, not fresh. Traditionally Cacio e Pepe called for spaghetti, but bucatini and tonnarelli – a square-

shaped spaghetti – also are traditional choices.

So, you say, how can three ingredients make this a difficult recipe?

The problem is the cheese. Because Pecorino Romano is a dry, hard cheese it has a very low moisture content. Without going into all the science, you want to turn a dry, hard cheese into a creamy sauce … and you want to do this without adding cream and using little to no butter or olive oil, other than what you used to toast the peppercorns.

When I make the Cacio e Pepe at Mama Mia’s, I use two pans to make the recipe. I toast the peppercorns in a skillet with a little olive oil and butter. I cook the pasta separately in a large saucepan, not a big pot, in just enough salted water to cover, and cook it only until al dente.

I drain the pasta with tongs, reserving some pasta water to add as needed. Off the heat I stir the pasta into the toasted peppercorns, and then gradually add the cheese with a tablespoon of pasta water as needed, stirring with a fork, until I get a smooth and creamy sauce.

For special occasions I make this recipe tableside. I put the toasted peppercorns in my large Parmesan

cheese wheel, toss the drained pasta with the grated Pecorino Romano in the wheel until creamy, and then flame the mixture with brandy before serving in individual bowls topped with additional cheese, pepper and parsley. Mama Mia it’s wonderful!

You can find many recipes for Cacio e Pepe online, but this recipe from The Kitchn website (https:// www.thekitchn.com/) uses a foolproof method to make sure the cheese melts into a creamy sauce.

The only change I would make is to first toast and cool your peppercorns. I think you’ll be very happy with the results.

By the way, I’ve also seen recipes for Cacio e Pepe corn on the cob, pizza and even deviled eggs!

5 ounces Pecorino Romano cheese, divided ● 2 tablespoons cracked or ground black peppercorns, divided ● 1 tablespoon good quality olive oil ● 1/3 cup ice water ● 1 pound dried spaghetti, bucatini, or tonnarelli pasta Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Using a Microplane, finely grate the cheese into a large bowl to yield 2-1/2 cups. Set aside 1/2 cup in a small bowl to use as garnish.

If desired, toast 2 tablespoons whole black peppercorns in 1 tablespoon olive oil; drain and cool.

Using a fork, mix 1 tablespoon cracked pepper into the cheese.

Drizzle in 1/3 cup ice water and use the fork to whisk it into the cheese mixture. Press the mixture against ●

the side of the bowl, as needed, to form a thick, mostly smooth and lump-free paste; set aside.

Add dried pasta to boiling water and cook until al dente, about 10 minutes or according to package instructions.

Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water.

Drain the pasta with tongs or a pasta fork and working quickly, immediately add pasta to the bowl of cheese paste, using a fork to vigorously stir and toss the pasta with the cheese paste. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved pasta water at a time as needed to loosen the paste until it evenly coats the pasta in a creamy sauce. (You’ll likely use only about 2 to 3 tablespoons of the pasta water total and not use all of it.)

Serve immediately, topped with the reserved grated Pecorino Romano and black pepper.

Prep Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 10 mins Ingredients ● 2 tablespoons vegetable oil ● 1 cup yellow corn kernels ● 4 TBS unsalted butter, melted ● 2 TBS Old Bay Seasoning ● Lemon wedges (optional) Instructions ● Place the butter in a small microwave bowl or stovetop pan and melt. Set aside. ● Heat the oil in a large pot (I used a pasta pot) over medium-high heat. Once the oil is heated, add a few kernels to the oil and wait for them to pop. Once they have popped that means the oil is hot enough and you can add the rest of your kernels. Cover the pot tightly with a lid and reduce heat to medium-low. ● Hold the lid closed with one hand and grab the handle with your

other. Gently shake the pot over the stove burner back and forth as the popcorn pops. Do not peek or open the lid or popcorn will fly everywhere. Continue to heat and shake kernels until fully popped.

Remove from heat.

Transfer the popcorn to a large bowl, drizzle with melted butter and toss together. Add the Old Bay Seasoning and continue tossing the popcorn until it is coated in the spice blend. *Note: since Old

A Look Back at Ocean City

ne hundred and five years ago, May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed June 14 would be known as “Flag Day.” It was on June 14, 1777, at Philadelphia, the Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress offered the resolution which resulted in the adoption of the Flag of the United States. The resolution read: “Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternated red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

Just who designed the first flag or made it is a question still debated

by historians, but most credit Betsy Ross.

“Betsy Ross’ Granddaughter” was the headline in the July 11, 1895, Ocean City Sentinel. The article reported, “Mrs. M. F. Wigert, of Fallsington, Pa., a granddaughter of “Betsy” Ross who made the first Star Spangled Banner, is comfortably settled at The Illinois for the summer.”

It was the first summer for the five-story, 60 room hotel located at 926 Wesley Avenue. The Sentinel article reported Mrs. Wigert gave a painting, showing General George Washington, Robert Morris, and Col. George Ross discussing the design of the flag with her grandmother. The painting was hung in the parlor of The Illinois Hotel. A United States stamp with the painting on it was issued in 1952 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Betsy Ross.

Mom Hacks For Successful Beach Days Mom's Vibe

et’s be real! Every mom has grand plans to hit the beach with the family every summer, until we’re covered in sand and overwhelmed by the sun, kids, and chaos. While this piece offers a few tips for successful family beach days, I also want to remind every mom that none of this is easy!

None of it comes with a hand book.

As you set out on your big beach day, remember to bring a big dose of grace along for the ride. Beaching it with the kids can feel like a full day’s work, especially when you have little ones. Take a deep breath, do not set high expectations, and decide before you go that you will “go with the flow” of the day.

This summer, hit the beach prepared with these beach-hacks for moms for a little less stress.

Baby Powder

Baby powder does not get enough credit for the godsend that it is on sandy summer days. For all that sand

stuck on ankles and in places the sun doesn’t shine, baby powder is the solution. Keep a giant tub of baby powder in your car all summer for those super sandy weekends. Cover the kids in a puff of baby powder, then gently brush off the sand for simple, dry sand removal before jumping in the car.

Fitted Sheets

Balloons

Before a big beach day, freeze or refrigerate your sunscreen. Then, when you go to apply it on the beach, it cools the kids’ skin down on contact and offers a dose of refreshment under the summer sun.

Blowup Baby Pools Every wave-jumping kid leaves the beach with water and sand in their ears. Throw a bag of balloons in the beach bag and have the kids blow one up after the beach. It will keep them entertained on the exhausted ride home while simultaneously blowing the water and sand gently out of their ears.

Pringles Cans & Diapers Bring an old fitted sheet to the beach to keep the sand at bay. Simply flip it upside down and use bags to secure the corners to create a sandfree safe space for kids, food, and safe keepings.

Refrigerate Sunscreen

Securing your valuables on the beach is always a conundrum. Empty a Pringles can or other snack bag, store your valuables, and stick it in your beach bag to keep it hidden. For those with babies, wrap your goods in a diaper to deter anyone from poking through your valuables.

This “hack” will serve you well whether or not you have babies. If you do have a young one, a baby pool of beach water will keep the babies happy, in the shade, and nearby. If you have bigger kids, a pool is still a great way to easily rinse hands and feet when it’s time for lunch. Either way, it’s a cheap purchase that will bring a great return on investment.

Gilda’s Dragon Boat Race Returns This Summer

n Sunday, July 11th, Gilda’s Club South Jersey will hold a unique event. Hundreds of participants, volunteers, vendors, spectators and breast cancer survivors will gather at Mays Landing’s Lake Lenape Park East for the 5th Annual Dragon Boat Festival. In 2019, more than 650 participants and 31 teams took to the water for a day of family-friendly fun, all for a worthy cause.

The Dragon Boat Festival is the largest fundraiser of the year for Gilda’s Club South Jersey (GCSJ).

In years past, the organization has raised more than $100,000 to help local individuals with cancer through a variety of in-person programs at their Linwood clubhouse and satellite facilities at AtlantiCare and Inspira Cancer Centers in Vineland and Mullica Hill.

Since the start of the pandemic, all of their in-person offerings became virtual, a first for the local Gilda’s Club. Their Program Director, Erin McAllister, transitioned all of their in-person programs online via Zoom, which was vital to the future of the South Jersey chapter, according

to CEO Eileen Dillon. “Having been closed for over a year, I’m not sure what our future would have been.”

Today, Gilda’s Club is moving forward with its reopening plan, while also looking ahead at expansion. As the only full service cancer support community in the New Jersey, the organization plans to double its programs. Dillon says their presence in the community has been growing within the last year through its virtual offerings. “The virtual program (has) worked for so many patients that either weren’t doing well enough to attend in-person, going through treatment, or weren’t able to get to us geographically.”

In 2019, the Dragon Boat Festival saw more than 1,100 attendees, paddlers and spectators at Lake Lenape.

This year, festival-goers are slated to return for a spectacular day of racing and fun to support Gilda’s Club programs. Festivities will include the dragon boat regatta, which attracts over 30+ teams made up of men and women, alongside cancer survivors.

During the day, a special flower ceremony is held along the water’s edge. Paddlers and attendees to commemorate and honor all individuals who are affected by cancer and remembering those who have lost their battle. With more than 16,000 individuals diagnosed with cancer every year, the ceremony raises importance of Gilda’s Club mission, to

support individuals and families who are impacted.

Throughout the day, attendees can enjoy cornhole tournaments, activities for the kids, delicious food from Essl’s Dugout and Josie Kelly’s, and a seafood boil. In addition, there will be a beer garden with tastings offered by Jon Henderson of Good Time Tricycle

Productions. Jon is best known for producing local events including the Atlantic City Beer & Music Festival, held recently at Bader Field.

Fresh Finds at Ventnor Farmers' Market By: Valerie Lonkart

h, summer. Long, warm days basking in the sun.

Cool nights spent with friends and family. Fresh fruits and vegetables galore. And right here on Absecon Island, the Ventnor City Farmers' Market, a haven for vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores alike.

With close to sixty vendors, there is truly something for everyone.

Whatever you're in the market for, you can find it here. Fresh produce, pasta, juice, prepared food, crafts, candles, cookies, kettle corn, bagels, CBD, flowers, honey, coffee, lemonade and everything in between, it's all at the Ventnor City Farmers' Market.

In its fifth year, the VCFM was the brain child of Red Room Cafe owner Maria Gatta and retirees Penni and Andy Starer. "Penni loves farmers' markets, fresh produce and products. We volunteered at the Margate

Farmers' Market and thought Ventnor needed to have one as well," said Andy Starer. "This is a way for us to give back to the community, a wonderful way to immerse ourselves in our town.

And it makes us feel good when we wake up," Starer said.

Michele Carty, Conscious Cooks co-owner, said the experience at the Ventnor City Farmer's Market is great. "This market is really well-done and well-organized. It's a total community event and everyone helps everyone out.

Penni, Andy and Maria walk around and communicate with everyone. They make you feel part of a family and community," said Carty "Every year it has grown in terms of crowds and vendors," said Starer. "We had over 1,800 people on opening day this year. Just a tremendous response with terrific support from the city."

"We have a great customer base here and sell a lot of products. This

market draws a lot of offshore and Ocean City customers," said Carty, who has been a vendor at the VCFM for three seasons.

"Penni, Andy, and Maria put their all into it."

"The market fosters a sense of mindfulness around what we consume and who we support. This is so important to building a strong community," said Ventnor resident and customer Lisa Riggio.

The Community Food Bank of New Jersey, located in Egg Harbor Township, has had a booth at the VCFM for the past two years. "Our experience here has been excellent. Our exposure at the Ventnor City Farmer's Market allows us to raise awareness about hunger in our area. They also collect much-needed funds for us. Last year, Sunny' Sunoco in Margate matched those funds. We are so grateful for this partnership," said Denise Hladun, Director of External Affairs.

Back by popular demand, the VCFM offers free advice from some "Old Coots." "We stole this idea from a farmers' market in Utah," said Starer. "It's meant to be something fun for the community." With the motto "It may not be the best advice, but it's free," the tent lends itself to some light-hearted fun and laughter.

Although the VCFM is a separate entity from the City of Ventnor, Starer said the city is incredibly supportive.

The public works department sets up the portable bike racks, trash cans, and banners. "Holy Trinity church is also a supportive partner, allowing us to have the market on their parking lot each week."

The market, a 501(3)(c) non-profit, is run by about 30 volunteers. All proceeds after the bills are paid are donated. Last year the VCFM made donations to the City of Ventnor, Holy Trinity Church, and the Community Food Bank.

Held every Friday morning between 8:30 and noon, the VCFM is centrally located on the corner of New Haven and Atlantic Avenues, across the street from the Ventnor Library.

Megan Erdman from Linwood attended Holy Spirit High School and was awarded a $500 Benson/Hunt Scholarship. She will be attending The University of Scranton in the fall majoring in History and Pre-Law. Megan enjoys coming to the credit union for the fast and friendly service in the drive-up window.

MacKenzie Esposito from Hammonton was also awarded a $500 Benson/ Hunt Scholarship. She will be attending Stockton University majoring in Biology.

MacKenzie praised the credit union for helping her save money to reach her financial goals.

Courtney Lynne Wolf of Northfield was awarded a $500 Surf Club Scholarship for members aged 18-25 that are already enrolled in an institute of higher education. She is currently attending Holy Family University and majoring in

Meet Plaid Salmon: A group of college-aged musicians making waves at the Jersey Shore Shore Local Talent

ased out of Somers Point, this eight-member band features vocals by Alicen Ragonese accompanied

by PJ Keiter on trumpet, Will Keiter on saxophone, Ricky Roehm on trombone, Tai Schaivo on keyboard, Dom Rossetti playing guitar, Patrick Angelo on Bass, and Nick Cesario on the drums.

Formed in 2017, the band has undergone several transition phases, the last of which resulted in an entirely new rhythm section after the Covid-19 pandemic. As live shows begin to resurface post-Covid, Plaid Salmon has made their way back onto the stage. Featuring jazz and cover music, the 8-man-band can be found

playing every Tuesday night at “On The Rocks” at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Station from 5:00-9:00pm.

Plaid Salmon is composed of musically educated college graduates. Members have degrees in jazz performance, music performance,

composition, and several other musically inclined fields of study. Originally formed in 2017 by PJ Keiter and a former guitar player, the band inherited its name on a whim from a viral YouTube video.

The original Plaid Salmon was cre-

ated to join a school talent show at Mainland Regional Highschool. Brothers PJ and Will Keiter along with a keyboard player who is no longer a member, joined the talent show as something fun to do with their time.

They stepped onto the stage in suits and fedora hats while they belted out Soul Man. The trio won the talent show, raising over $1,000 for St. Jude’s Hospital. From there, they went on to win the local Teen Arts Festival and decided that playing in the band could be a fun summer gig.

Since their humble beginnings, the group has gone on to play live music throughout South Jersey including at Josie Kelly’s Public House, Hospitality Creek, and On The Rocks restaurant.

Through this experience, they’ve grown from a young cover band to a well-respected jazz and wedding band.

The blend of jazz, funk, and pop hits offer high energy fun with each performance. Their love for the music is what drives the members of Plaid Salmon to keep performing.

Do You Want to Play a Game?

Views from the Shore

ust before the pandemic, my friend David Pena – one of our area’s most creative night life and entertainment minds (John Henderson of Good Time Tricycle being right up there too!) – invited me to play soccer at the Euro Sports Center in Egg Harbor City. In the spirit of Dave’s Boogie Nights 80’s dance club, I immediately recalled the famous line from the 1983 hit War Games of “Do you want to play a game?” I agreed and I was immediately hooked.

Each week, I play in a 45 and over league, and have a blast. I decided to take this week’s column and introduce you to the experience by speaking with the owners of the Euro Sports Center, John O’Brien and Spiros Gaitanos.

John, who was born in Ireland and came to the US in 1993, and Spiros, who hails from Greece and came to the States in 1969, are both avid soccer fans and have a true love and passion

for the game. They met while playing at Gabriel Fields in Galloway and in the Chelsea Heights neighborhood of Atlantic City. John was working in finance in the casino industry and Spiro had been a successful entrepreneur in the area. After five years of research, the two along with two other partners started the Euro Sports Center project in 2005 and opened it in 2007.

sive environment for soccer players of all ages, genders and backgrounds.

There are a number of leagues including the 45+ that I play in, a Co-Ed Summer league, High School level, and kids winter (U8-14) to name a few. Skill levels range from beginner “weekend warrior types” to those who have played at a semi pro level.

As someone who started to play after last taking the field in high school. I can tell you that I was a bit intimidated to start, but they make it comfortable for new players to ease their way back in.

O’Brien says, “We always welcome and encourage new players. I recommend that they come to pick up games, try it at their own pace, and grow with the game. We want people to have an enjoyable and competitive experience, and of course do so in a safe and healthy way.”

Spiros added, “The leagues are perfect for someone who has a passion for the sport and wants to get in shape in a different way. There is also a social aspect to playing here that is really special.”

One of the things I like most about playing at the Euro Sports Center is that I have had the chance to meet people from all over the world, including Greece, Peru, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal, Honduras and Italy just to name a few.

“Soccer is a tribal sport. It does not matter where you are from,” explains Gaitanos. “When you get on the field, you don’t have to speak the same language. You can play and communicate through body language.

It’s a beautiful game.”

“So many friendships have been born out of playing here,” Spiros continued. “Some have even met their spouses through our co-ed league.

I’ve seen their children grow into teenagers.”

In addition to soccer, Euro Sports Center has also become the winter home for the Future Legends Football Academy and LKH Field Hockey, among others. It also offers programs for overall athletics, martial arts, personal training, and isolated stretching.

“We are more than just soccer, we are a complete wellness facility,” said Spiros. “There’s nothing more important than your health, and no matter where you are physically, we can help you get to where you want and need to be.”

Spiros is a graduate of Atlantic City High School and now a volunteer coach for the Atlantic City High School track team. He is looking to develop programs for the grade school and middle school children in Atlantic City and would welcome corporate or individual sponsors who could partner with him to make it happen.

I

t has probably been at least twenty five years since I wore women’s makeup. Permit me to clarify. I was working at a local newspaper where we would have fun launching special advertising sections by performing skits or amusing presentations. Someone had the bright idea of dressing up three male (if I can still use that term) sales executives.

I was one of people of whom volunteerism was thrust upon. There were wigs, dresses, high heels, makeup and that is about as much as I am willing to disclose. We all had a lot of fun and the launch of the fashion section was a success. Still today, after so many years, former colleagues would not fail to remind me of how we looked in our fashion ensembles. I thought those days were well behind me but when our five year old granddaughter saw a commercial on TV showing a young girl putting makeup on her grandfather before her tea party, my loving wife suggested they do that

with me. Never wanting to disappoint my grandchildren, I agreed to go undergo the makeup procedure again. Eye shadow, rouge, an eyebrow pencil, red lipstick and purple glitter nail polish were laid out on the table like a surgical theater. My granddaughter was having so much fun applying the eye shadow that my seven year old grandson wanted to have a try. A word of caution was issued as he almost poked my eye out. My granddaughter darkened one eyebrow and my grandson the other. My wife helped apply the lipstick while I struggled to mimic the shape of her lips. Then the nail polish was applied and we were finished. Or so I thought.

I learned that part of the bargain was taking everyone out for ice cream.

The young girls behind the counter bought into act and agreed to be part of the video. Other patrons, however tried to avert their eyes. In the end, the grandkids enjoyed applying the makeup and my humiliation at the ice cream parlor. The next morning

nail polish removal did nothing to take off the polish and I just gave in to the fact that I would have some explaining to do for the foreseeable future. Maybe I could try some gasoline or turpentine from the garage or at least the Dremel, I thought but my wife suggested stronger polish remover. With some scrubbing, that remover got rid of most of the polish with just a glimmer of sparkle remaining. If I gave my granddaughter the memory of putting make up on her Pop Pop and taking her to the ice cream parlor, a few remnants of glitter on my nails is an exceedingly small price to pay. my wife and I went to support the Dean Randazzo paddling event. I had removed my makeup but thought I would leave the nail polish removal for later. This, of course elicited comments from the staff and I once again had to explain myself. Day three, I decided I better remove the polish. To my dismay, I found that our

Margate's 10th Annual Beachstock 2021

T

he Planet’s Biggest Beach Party returns Saturday, June 26, 8:00 am – 10 pm. with mouth watering food, unique handmade crafts, featured retailers and sponsors. Children’s activities, live music, Air Circus single/ double line stunt kite demonstrations and lessons, volleyball, South Pacific Island Dancers, beach nature walk, special characters all capped off by an evening movie, bon fire on the beach and a performance by British Invasion.

The activities take place on the beach between Huntington and Granville Avenues with food and beverage set up in the parking lot of the Martin Bloom Pavilion. Featured this year will be the Margate Catch the Wave Cornhole League Tournament where teams can compete to win cash prizes. Plus, family fun recreational play.

Spectators and guests can watch the tournament from the Colmar Home Center Chill Zone featuring comfy furniture and refreshments.

“Beachstock 2021? Yes!,” says Ed Berger, President of the Margate Business Association. “Plenty of room on a beautiful big beach with well thought out safety protocols for every part of the day from sunrise to after sunset. The Planet’s Biggest (and most cautiously thought out) beach party!”

A major feature of this 14-hour event is non-stop entertainment on the 100.7 WZXL main stage. The musical line up opens with the ever-popular local rock and pop cover band Either Way followed by the get up and get ready to dance party rock and pop dance classic sensation Mas Tequila Orchestra. Headlining the event with an evening performance will be the renown tribute band The British Invasion Experience playing favorites from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Zombies and more. The stage excitement continues with a day and evening Samoan fire knife dance performance by the South Pacific Island Dancers. Children and adults can learn to limbo and hula with professional Polynesian dancers and enjoy Tahitian drums.

The all-day excitement includes: volleyball competitions, crafters, vendors, local retailers, sand sculpting lessons with Matthew Deibert, Margate Fire Departments Cool Blast, Kids Treasure Hunt, popular children’s character Hula Minion, a beer and wine garden. At dusk, a bonfire and a family Disney movie Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch. The 95.1 WAYV kid’s stage features a full schedule of activities!

Boardwalk Budz Set to Cast a Happy Haze Over AC in the City’s First of its Kind Event night. The comedy club will run on Friday and Sunday night in the Bourbon room from 11:30 pm and the cover is only $20 for an entire night of laughs. Featured comedians include the aptly named Laura High, Kevin Garifo, Tony Watson, and Biranna Bennozich. Philadelphia Flower Show 2021 HABITAT: Nature’s Masterpiece Let It Grow

ormally, breaking traditions kept since 1829 would be a bad thing. But since the past year has been anything but normal, finding new ways to make things happen has been the key to survival. The Philadelphia Horticultural Society (PHS) Philadelphia Flower Show made history by holding the gardening ex-

travaganza outdoors for the first time in its 193-year run.

Hosting what is called “the nation’s largest and longest-running horticultural event” takes a year of planning, and what a year it was! Organizers had to rethink and plan the flower show amidst a time of ever-changing circumstances and unknown factors.

Fortunately, by the time the June 5 - June 15 event arrived, many of the restrictions in place because of the COVID-19 virus had been lifted, especially for outdoor events. The

designers, gardens, and floral displays in the Show’s history, with over 75 unique installations for guests to see and interact with”. The Show welcomed 34 major exhibitors, including eight “brand-new major exhibitors displaying gardens at the Show for the very first time”.

Among these new exhibitors was Wambui Ippolito, winner of the coveted PHS Philadelphia Flower Show Cup--Best in Show, Landscape. Her show garden, Etherea, was inspired by memories of her childhood years in East Africa and lifelong travels. The display featured perennial verbena (bonariensis), foxgloves, delphiniums, different types of hydrangeas, and a metal moon gate, along with many other beautiful flowers, grasses, and meaningful symbols to evoke light, air, and peace.

The gold medal garden also won the Men’s Garden Club of Delaware Valley Award and the Special Achievement Award of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania.

One of the more artsy and unique displays was created by Nomad Studio, winner of the Governor’s Trophy for its innovative design. Their exhibit named Kokedama Forest consisted of more than 1,200 forest seedling kokedama, nestled in a woven steel structure, creating a miniature sculptural forest. Kokedama, translated from the Japanese as “moss ball” is a creative method of growing plants in a soil ball covered in moss. Visitors were encouraged to enter the “micro-woodland” while surrounded by thousands of elevated kokedamas on the inverted metal dome.

Among the Shore Local Gardener’s favorites were the European countryside inspired Beauté et Générosité

by Petit Jardin en Ville, of Philadelphia; PHS Gold Medal winner Mark Cook Landscape and Contracting, LLC (also a favorite at last year’s show) with their exhibit Intertwined; and of course, our South Jersey favorite, the award-winning Waldor Orchids’ exhibit Living with Plants. The Linwood orchid grower has been participating in the Philadelphia Flower Show since the mid-1930s and continues to amaze the crowds and win awards. This year’s display featured a walk-through home scene— complete with a 150-gallon terrarium, a pergola, and a greenhouse. All were filled with orchids, Aroids, and rare plants. Linwood’s Lang’s Garden Market supplied bedding plants, outdoor trees, and shrubs for the display.

While holding the event outdoors was unique and enabled the show to go on this year, it was not without consequences. Temperatures in the 90s made for wilted plants and visitors. Thunderstorms throughout the week made it necessary to evacuate the park during at least one of the scheduled time slots during this “rain or shine” event. But the gardening

show came at a time when we had all spent a year confined. It felt like a celebration to breathe in fresh, unmasked air, while surrounded by flowers. Time will tell if PHS organizers will go back to the long tradition of holding the event indoors, just before spring, when we are all craving life and color in the garden. Who knows what the year ahead will hold?

ust two of the phrases that Charlie’s Bar & Restaurant have used in their marketing and advertising campaigns forever. I start off my column with them because Charlie’s was on the cover of last week’s Shore Local and that reminded me that it’s been FOREVER since I’ve been down to see my friends at 800 Shore Road in Somers Point.

Jeff & Jimmy Thomas have carried on the tradition that their father and grandfather before them had, and that’s to run a good family business where folks can catch up, watch a game, laugh & tell stories, and have a great meal at the same time! When I first moved down to the area full-time in 2004, Charlie’s quickly became my “go to” spot, and there’s a reason they are part of what I call the “Holy Trinity” of Somers Point establishments. If you’re local, you already know about

Charlie’s. But, if you’re down on vacation and just picking up a copy of this publication, I urge you not to go back to your home without stopping in at Charlie’s. You won’t regret it!

In sports, since I last wrote, the Sixers blew a golden opportunity to take a 3-1 series lead over the Atlanta Hawks in their second round NBA playoff series. The Phillies won 6 out of 8 at home before heading to the West Coast for a crucial road trip. There was also a huge emotional moment from one of the come-frombehind wins by the Phils last week.

The Eagles sign a notable free agent QB as that meeting room is getting more crowded during the offseason. A few names have surfaced as potential trade targets for the Flyers. On the local front, Ocean City and Mainland meet up in the South Jersey Group III final for baseball. In fact, as I write this, three local baseball teams are still alive. As I write this, three local softball teams are still alive as well.

From entertainment, I’ve enjoyed a six-part docuseries on CNN that’s all about my favorite hours of television. Plus, did you see what Pink Floyd founding member Roger Waters said about Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg? As always though, we begin

Jim Thomas, PT, Jeff Thomas at Charlie's with sports, and my thoughts: We’ll start with the Sixers as I feel they missed a GOLDEN opportunity to bring a 3-1 series lead back to Philadelphia for Game 5 after falling 103-100 in Atlanta on Monday night. Let’s start with a few of the things that really bothered me about Game 4. ● The Sixers blew a huge lead as they were up by as much as 18 at one point in the ballgame, only to lose by three. They also turned the ball over 12 times, and perhaps the biggest failure? As a team, the Sixers only scored 38 points in the 2nd half. (4 by Embiid – all at the FT line – Embiid 0-12 from the field in the 2nd half). ●

Embiid did have a chance to win the ballgame, but his drive to the hoop and his layup attempt missed.

Despite a playoff career high 21 rebounds to go along with 17 points, after the game, the big man admitted he’s not 100% saying normally he’d dunk a ball like that, but he just can’t jump, for obvious reasons.

The other key problem is Ben Simmons, who didn’t attempt a single field goal in the eight minutes he was on the floor in the 4th quarter.

Hey, Simmons doesn’t shoot much to begin with, but when Embiid is hurting, SOMEONE has to shoot the basketball! After the game, Simmons admitted this, saying “I definitely should’ve been more aggressive and attacked more.” Let’s hope that by the time you read this, Game 5 will be in the books and Simmons will respond with a better effort.

A few more stats that illustrate how GREAT and how MADDENING things can be with Simmons. The 6-foot-11-point guard had zero turnovers for just the third time in 31 playoff games. However, Simmons also hit just 1 of 5 free

throws. He’s shooting 34.0% from the line. That’s 17.4 percent worse than the next player with at least 10 attempts, and 27.3% worse than his 61.3% from the regular season, when he was 11th-worst in the NBA, and by far was the worst guard. You can’t make this stuff up!

In baseball, the Phillies slowly climbed back into the NL East race by winning 6 of 8 at home, however the Mets continue to win as well and are in first place.

Perhaps nothing for the Phillies was more special during the last home-stand than when 24-yearold Luke Williams made his first career home-run in the big leagues a walk-off winner.

The Phillies had just four hits and made 15 straight outs in that game before Andrew McCutchen drew a one-out walk off Will Smith (1-5) in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Brad Miller popped out to second, bringing up Williams, who was promoted from Triple-A Lehigh Valley for his first taste of the majors. Williams then drove an 0-1 slider over the wall in left. It was the 24-year-old's first homer in an affiliated game since connecting on Aug. 23, 2019 for Double-A Reading.

What made this so special was that his parents & family were there.

And it capped off a memorable week for Williams, who helped Team USA clinch a spot in the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday night. He went 8 for 18 with a homer during the tournament before relinquishing his spot on the Olympic team due to his big-league call-up. If you caught that game on TV, or just look at the pictures, you see the pure JOY in his face, and hopefully that will provide the Phillies with a bit of an emotional lift going forward. At the end of the day, it is a GAME, right?

One final note on the Phillies as their weekend series at the Giants is ONLY going to be found on the new PEACOCK network. Now, if you’re like me, it’s a slight pain to switch from the traditional channels to PEACOCK, which I already get with my XFINITY. But, if you don’t have XFINITY it’s going to be more of a challenge to find the games.

The change marks an experiment in the way MLB games are distributed, focusing on nationwide streaming rather than local regional sports networks. The broadcast will feature one crew of announcers familiar to fans of both teams.

Now to football, where the Eagles quietly added to their QB room by signing former San Francisco backup Nick Mullens. The 26-year-old started 16 games in three seasons for the 49ers, eight games as an undrafted rookie in 2018 and eight more last season. You might remember that one of his starts last year was a prime-time loss against the Eagles when Jimmy Garoppolo was out with an ankle injury. That’s the game where Mullens threw an absolute gift directly to Eagles linebacker Alex Singleton for a pick-6

on Sunday night football. The 49ers went 2-6 in games Mullens started last year, and, he completed 64.7% of his passes, throwing 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Maybe Mullens will push Joe Flacco for the backup spot, but I don’t see this as a threat to Jalen Hurts in any way, shape, or form. The Birds also a few days prior to that addressed their need for a tight end by bringing back veteran tight end Richard Rodgers. This is the 4th time in as many years that Rodgers has hit the free agency market, only to wind back up in South Philadelphia.

With a Zach Ertz trade or release still seemingly imminent and Dallas Goedert stepping into a featured tight end role, the Eagles were alarmingly thin at the position.

For a coach who values multiple-tight-end sets as much as Nick Sirianni did during his time in Indianapolis, a move to bolster the team’s depth at tight end makes sense. Although the “fan” in me still wishes they could somehow keep Ertz on the roster!

It just doesn’t have the same zip to me right now.

The Flyers did sign forwards German Rubtsov & Linus Sandlin to one-year deals. They’re both slotted for the AHL Lehigh Valley Phantoms, but the big moves are still to come. Could Nolan Patrick get traded? Is there any way to move Jake Voracek? Is there a defenseman out there that might come to the Flyers? To try and answer those, I’ll say, “not a one-for-one move on Patrick, only if you also threw in a draft pick to maybe get Seattle to take him in the expansion draft and I don’t see Chuck Fletcher doing that, and Seth Jones would look good in Orange & Black. Perhaps Dougie Hamilton instead.”

I can’t move on to the local stuff without acknowledging the upcoming U.S. Open in golf from Torrey Pines. That’s what I’ll spend a majority of my weekend doing, and definitely on Father’s Day as I’m hoping Phil Mickelson can FINALLY win the one elusive major title he’s been missing from a Hall of Fame resume.

Now, on the local front, I have to start with Group 3 South playoff baseball as I was part of the 500 or so folks who lined the field and outfield for Ocean City vs.

Mainland in Linwood last weekend. What an outstanding game as Gannon Brady pitched a gem, helping the Red Raiders win 6-1 to win the program’s first sectional title since 2016. In addition, Brady helped his own cause at the plate, delivering a two-run double. In fact, as I write this, the Red Raiders have won again, beating Colts Neck in a Group 3 state semifinal, and will play Pascack Valley next for a state Group 3 championship.’

And I have to mention the Cedar Creek softball team too. Down by three runs against Delran, the Pirates rallied to tie it up at 7-7 and then senior Abby Gunnels won the game with an RBI single to right.

Cedar Creek advances to play the winner of the Central Jersey Group II title game between top-seeded Bordentown and No. 2 Robbinsville in a state semifinal.

As I write this, the Pirates are one of three area softball teams still alive as St. Joe Academy and Hammonton (both located in Hammonton) are also still going.

ou don’t need me to tell you this, but we are witnessing a huge leadership vacuum across many areas of our culture today. Like never before, there is a need to develop leaders; in the workplace, government, community and in the home. So, what’s the future of leadership development? That is the question being asked by many including Harvard Business Review. The authors of an article on the subject say that the traditional way of developing leaders in the areas of higher education and degrees as well as companies that bring in outside consultants just isn’t working. Here’s the reason why.

They say that much of the approach to training and leadership development until recently has focused on understanding financials, theories in leadership and management. These skills, while important and essential to the position, are often difficult to apply on the job. There has been what Harvard Business Review calls a ‘skills transfer gap’. That’s the concept that what is rarely learned is rarely applied. So what does that mean for those currently in leadership roles? Over the next couple of columns I’ll unpack some possible solutions to consider. I want to spend the time on this topic because I think we can all agree that for every aspect of our society to succeed, we need strong, bold leadership.

Harvard Business admits that it’s not an easy fix. The authors say a massive overall in the way we teach and impart leadership development is badly needed. What the authors argue for is something they call PLC or a personal learning cloud. And PLC is made up of four characteristics.

The first is that learning needs to be PERSONALIZED. In order words, it’s not a one size fits all for a company or even individual leaders within that company. It’s the realization that everyone has a different learning style, a certain pace and certain media that best helps them in their leadership learning journey. The Second is that LEARNING is socialized. Learning happens best when leaders collaborate and help one another. When I work with teams in leadership development I make sure there is plenty of time for open discussion and feedback on the material we cover. I also recommend holding regular teleconference, Zoom meetings or facilitated discussions to play off of each other and learn from one another. Interaction is key to growing individuals and teams. Next time, I’ll dive deeper into these ideas.

Hopefully, not only those of you in business will benefit, but you will find concepts and principles you can apply to all areas of leadership.

ourney Hospice, in collaboration with Fleet Reserve Association Branch 13, hosted a Flag Day Ceremony for the veteran residents of Egg Harbor Care Center, in Egg Harbor Township. Mayor Paul Hodson shared a proclamation on the front lawn.

Journey Hospice recognized several veteran residents with certificates of acknowledgment for their service to our country. Egg Harbor Care Center staff members, families of the veteran residents and members of the community were also present.

here are a couple more situations that your will need a death certificate or at least a photocopy of one.

The first is in regard to credit cards, when an individual passes you want gather all the credit cards and then call each company to close out the accounts. Some credit card companies may require a death certificate while other card companies are fine with a photocopy.

Just like gym memberships, cell phone contracts are extremely difficult to get out of while you are alive let alone when a loved one passes.

There is a surprising number of hoops to jump through after a cell phone operator’s death. You should call the cell phone company immediately and ask what they require to close an account.

You may not need a death certificate but having a certified copy available when going could speed up the process. You should always go online first to see what their preferred process is.

The benefits of strengthening your core Shore Fit

W

hen you think of core strength, do you picture six-pack abs and endless amounts of sit-ups and crunches? You’re not alone if you do but it’s time to change your perspective. A strong core goes way beyond that. Everything from daily tasks like tying your shoelaces and cleaning, to heavy weight lifting and cardio exercises all require your core muscles. The stronger they are, the better you’ll perform.

Core exercises train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen to work in harmony. This leads to better balance and stability for daily activities. This is important as we age. In fact, most physical activities depend on stable core muscles.

When you train your core, your lower back also gets stronger and

healthier. Making you less likely to suffer from back pain. This is critical for us as we age. I know a lot of people with back injuries.

Our core gets weak and tight over time when the muscles are not properly strengthened or used. Changes in body mechanics, like excessive abdominal fat or prolonged periods of sitting, are a major factor. Both men and women are at risk. This can begin for women in the menopausal years.

Having a strong core won’t only affect your sit-ups. It has a positive impact on your physical wellbeing as a whole.

As the back and abdominal area becomes stronger, the body’s balance and coordination also improves.

When you do core exercises it stimulates a particular area in the brain called the cerebellum. The cerebellum affects coordination, spatial awareness and balance. These exercises are not only a workout for your

body, but also for your brain. That’s a two for one kind of exercise. So if you’re into sports which require good hand-eye coordination such as golf, pickleball, tennis, baseball or even shooting hoops, it’s worth it to work on those abdominal muscles.

With a strong core, stress and tension are removed from your back muscles and that alone enhances your flexibility and gives you a broader range of motion.

Let me explain some of the ways to strengthen your core because knowledge is power and we need to protect our bodies.

The first is a plank. I’ll give a little explanation so that you may do these at home and on your own time. The high or low plank is a perfect start to your core strengthening journey because it has minimal movement. It also can be adapted to something harder or easier depending on how you feel.

Support your lower body on your forearms (low) or your hands(high) with your legs behind you, keep your back straight and low holding this position for as long as possible. When improving with your core strength, start to hold for longer times.

The next is called Bird-Dog and I love it because it targets your lower back! A lot of the core activities you’re used to, target your abdominal area. This helps not only your lower back but improves balance and stability. Kneel on all fours before raising your right arm out, at the same time straighten your left leg out. Once you’ve done this hold before lowering to the ground, repeat on the other side. It’s a very simple movement that keeps the brain engaged.

Bicycle crunches are another favorite and also very effective because upper and lower abs will be tested, along with your hips! Make sure you don’t twist your body too quickly or hard as this could cause injury. Sit with a slight bend at your knees, bring your right knee up and your left elbow down towards each other. Repeat this on the other side.

Last and never least, is my absolute favorite because it works the glutes as well. These are called Glute Bridges. Lie face up on the floor, with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Keep your arms at your side with your palms down. I tell my clients to place their feet at 11am and 1pm to take any pressure off their knees.

This particular exercise engages the core stabilizers. Lift your hips off the ground until your knees, hips and shoulders form a straight line. Hold your bridged position for a couple of seconds before easing back down.

There you have it! Happy Core Strengthening!

Celebrating LGBT Winemakers

une is a month of celebration for many, and we surely can’t imagine a celebration without a glass of wine. June 28th marks the anniversary of Stonewall, the riots which ensued when a gay club in New York was raided by police in 1969. Icons like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera led these calls to action, and the LGBTQ community recognizes the month of June as a time to rejoice in forward progress, as well as honor the heroes who got us here. If you’re raising a glass to love this month, we’ve got the scoop on LGBTQ-led wineries that you can support in the process.

The wine industry has famously struggled with diversity. However, its made great strides recently when it comes to fostering a community of acceptance. In a testament to these positive moves, here are two winemakers who are thriving as they craft fine wines in a changing world.

Theresa Heredia has been making exceptional wines for Gary Farrell Winery for nearly 10 years. With degrees in biochemistry, enology, and viticulture, she brings levels of science and precision to the process that would make most people’s heads spin. She specializes in the production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – two of the most challenging grapes to work with. Heredia was named “Winemaker to Watch” by the San Francisco Chronicle, and nominated for Winemaker of the Year by Wine Enthusiast.

Remy Wines is the eponymous label of Oregon-based winemaker, Remy Drabkin. In an interview with Pride Journeys, she recalled a moment that pushed her towards finally opening her own winery in McMinnville; her last employer gifting her 5 gallons of juice and challenging her to make it into a wine that could compete with their lead winemaker’s (she won, of course). She has since built a tasting room and business that is vibrant and welcoming, with regular events and community outreach.

There are more LGBTQ winemakers and industry leaders, of course – including those who are not yet out to the world. Mercury Wine in California is named for the incredible Freddie Mercury, who was openly bisexual and became the face of the movement to fight AIDS. Gentleman Farmer Wines is led by the talented couple Joe Wolosz and Jeff Durham, who frequently contribute to funds such as the It Gets Better Project.

If you look, you can find many more ways to support LGBTQ people during this month, but we’re fans of doing so with wine in hand.

Supporting one of these winemakers is a great way to kill two birds with one stone – try some new vino, and give back to a community with so much to honor and celebrate. Happy Pride!

Considering Owning a Second Home? A Few Things You Should Know

or many American's dream of Homeownership doesn't stop at just one Home. Rather, it encompasses a second home as well. According to National Association of Realtors statistics, the percentage of homes that currently are used as a second or a vacation home has risen to 6.3 percent and even higher in the midst of a pandemic. In part, this trend has been caused by the availability of new work from home policies, making more frequent and long-lasting vacations a possibility for many families.

Here are some things to consider before you decide whether to buy in your favorite getaway location or whether to spend that money on a long-term rental there instead.

1. How frequently will you be able to use the property? If the property is too far away or inconvenient to access, then you may find that it is logistically difficult to set aside time to travel there, meaning that you will use it far less than you expect.

2. How will a second Home cut into your other travel? If your idea of vacation bliss is fairly consistent, a second home may be a good option. If you like variety however, you may find that a vacation home becomes a bit ho-hum after a few years.

3. Will a second home work for your family long-term? If your children are fairly young, will they still want to go to this vacation home in five years or ten years?

4. How will you manage the property?

Is there reliable property management in the area or will you find yourself constantly traveling to the home to take care of it?

5. Can you withstand the financial impact of a second home? Make sure that you are on a sound financial footing before you take on the expense of an additional home.

6. Is the second Home part of a longterm plan? Will you eventually retire there or allow one of your children to live there? This may make a difference in terms of practicality.

7. Have you explored home prices, appreciation and amenities in the area to ensure that this property and neighborhood is the right fit for you?

Financing a second Home may be as simple as financing your first Home. You may obtain a conventional mortgage just as you would for a primary residence.

However, be aware that most lenders generally see a second home as a riskier proposition than a primary residence.

You will probably pay a little higher interest rates, need a larger down payment and the credit and income requirements may be more stringent.

If you don't want to take out a brand new mortgage, you may want to consider the following strategies: Today's record high equity levels and record low interest rates may make a home equity loan a good option for financing your vacation home. If you would prefer to keep your current home loan, you can apply to open a home equity line of credit to fund your vacation home in full or to fund the down payment for it's purchase.

If you are thinking about how to pay for that second home, you may decide to rent it out for part of the year in order to offset some of its cost. If you have applied for a new mortgage, however, this may turn your second home into an investment property, creating significant changes to the financing and to the tax structure.

One alternative is to purchase your second home as a joint venture with family members or friends. If you decide to go this route, you will want to ensure that you have everything spelled out in a legally binding written agreement in place covering the ground rules for the shared use of the home, as well as contingencies in the case of death, divorce, or desire on the part of either party to opt out of the home's use and financing.

With proper research and choosing the right property for you and your family's needs, hopefully your second vacation home will reap many years of enjoyment and financial rewards for you and your loved ones.
