Beware of Lightning & Rip Current Risks Weather By Dan Skeldon
I
f you don't like the weekend weather in South Jersey, apparently all you have to do is wait a week and it will change, quite dramatically to say the least. We went from 50-degree rain, drizzle, and wind on Memorial Day weekend to 80s and 90s with hot and sticky summery sunshine for the first weekend of June. So it looks like summer has arrived, at least weather-wise, as we've entered the three traditionally hottest months of the year here at the shore. Two things that often coincide with this hottest stretch, however, are two things that are often among the leading causes of weather injuries and fatalities at the Jersey Shore. No, it's not tornadoes or hurricanes, although they definitely are the talk of the town during the rare occasions when we see one. And although television may
say otherwise, it's not a shark either. Nationally, the number one cause of death is actually the heat itself. Of course, in South Jersey, with the benefit of the ocean and cooling sea breezes, we are less vulnerable than hotter or more urban areas, but not totally immune either. One of our top two hazards is easier to guess than the other, as it's a much more frequent visitor to the shore than those aforementioned twisters and tropical systems. It's a thunderstorm, or specifically, lightning. The second is often not as easy to surmise, as it's an invisible but sometimes even more dangerous hazard, the rip current. So let's start there. Out of all the deaths from all the hazardous types of weather, fatalities from rip currents are the most preventable of them all. Swim on a guarded beach, and the chance of drowning in a rip current is very small. Almost all rip current related deaths occur when people swim alone, at night, and more than anything else, on unguarded beaches, oftentimes before or after lifeguards are on duty. As a meteorologist, forecasting the rip current risk, which we classify as low, moderate, or high, is something fairly easy to

do with solid accuracy. Similarly, lifeguards know which days are higher risk days, and even know specific beaches where rips are more likely to form. Furthermore, lifeguards can sometimes spot the difficult-to-see hazard and keep swimmers away from the narrow channel of water that can pull you quickly away from shore, at the speed of eight feet per second in some cases! Yet people still swim on unguarded beaches, often walking right past the signs that explain the danger that rip currents pose. Some beachgoers don't even know what a rip current is, let alone the danger it can create or how to escape if caught up in one. For the record, don't swim directly back towards the beach, rather swim parallel to the shore to get out of the narrow channel of fast-moving water. Rip currents are more likely to occur near jetties and inlets, with strong onshore winds, and whenever the surf is rough, especially with offshore hurricanes churning up the ocean. But even the quietest of days can still have them lurking out of sight on any South Jersey beach. Use common sense, and you'll avoid becoming a statistic. Last year, there were 4 rip current fatalities along the Jersey shore. There have been 46 deaths in the last 23 years in New Jersey altogether, with Sundays the most common day and not surprisingly, 5pm to 8pm the most common times, after lifeguards have left for the day. Sadly, most of those deaths were entirely preventable. Meanwhile, the 1.21 gigawatts in a bolt of lightning (thanks Dr. Brown from Back To The Future) is generally an easier to comprehend hazard. Yet, some don't appreciate the threat it can pose. The National Weather Service uses the catchphrase "when thunder roars, go indoors," which is
good, simple advice. That's because lightning can strike from a thunderstorm over 10 miles away, even when the sun is still shining and the rain has yet to start. A "bolt from the blue" can strike seemingly from the clear blue sky, hence the name. There's been many South Jersey beaches or boardwalks, I have exited when thunder was roaring, but no one else was going "indooring." There's also been several South Jersey graduation ceremonies or outdoor events that have tried to "beat out" a thunderstorm, when all attendees were clearly in harm's way. But that's a soap box issue I've covered in other platforms in years past. While meteorologists can't predict precisely when and where lightning will strike (besides the Hill Valley clock tower), there are simple steps you can take to stay weather ready. There are cell phone apps with lightning trackers, which will alert you when lightning strikes within 5 or 10 miles of your location. Having a radar in the palm of your hand is helpful as well to track summertime thunderstorms, which can be fickle and fast to move, both in and out. Common sense plus a little technology will hopefully have you on your way to a safe and fun summer at the shore! Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Do the Dogs Deserve More? A bone to pick at Dog Beach

ome summer, there's a place where all the dogs go, or at least the lucky ones. Situated between the Longport Causeway toward the north end Ocean City bridge, Dog Beach is a seeming paradise for dogs and their owners alike. Dogs run free, frolicking in and out of the waves on the nearly mile long stretch. Tennis balls fly in every direction, with many retrievals including a good swim. Dogs of every breed and size greet one another in perfect dog fashion, with a sniff under each other's tails. Owners snap pictures and take video, seemingly delighted in both the beauty of the inlet beach and their dogs' ecstasy. Officially called Malibu beach, but better known as "Dog Beach," this
stretch of inlet beach used to be the local dog lovers' best kept secret. Those Days are over. The beach is packed! As many folks report they have driven hours to spend the entire day at Dog Beach, parking has become increasingly difficult. Although Dog Beach has a parking lot with additional parking for the fishing pier across the street, both fill up fast. On the causeway approaching Dog Beach, there are a multitude of "No Parking" signs. Yet on Saturday afternoon, there were more than 25 cars parked along the road and it was easy to see where they were headed, with dogs and beach gear in tow. The crowds have grown to a point where most locals won't go near it in the summer months. I thought I had found a way of skirting the issue by taking my dogs to Dog Beach at dusk

around 8pm. However, last week it was packed, even at such a late hour. There has never been a better time in history to be a dog. They are valued, loved and cared for more t han ever and I am a hundred percent for that. When I was a kid though, in the early seventies, our family dog had a dog house. He was only allowed to come inside during extreme temperatures (in the basement, that is). Fast-forward 50 years and my mom has a dog that has a bigger wardrobe than I do, multiple cozy beds within the house and a prime seat on the couch. Dog parks, daycares, apparel, and specialty treats have all trended upward in recent years. I believe we are just learning how priceless a role our furry friends play in our lives. There is no doubt, a dog's love is special. They are always thrilled to see you, regardless of what you look like, or how much money you have in your bank account. Their love and loyalty is unconditional and if you’re like me, their goofy smile lights up my day. More and more townships, cities
and businesses are acknowledging the important role that dogs play in our lives. Many are adding accommodations such as inclusive hotels, rentals and dog parks. Bob and I often joke that they really should have a doggy icecreàm truck come to Dog Beach. They would probably make millions! When it comes to Dog Beach, what is the answer to the overcrowding and lack of parking? Should there be more designated dog beaches? Should they charge the
pups or perhaps require beach tags for matience costs? More questions than answers, but I for one vote for more dog beaches.

o Philadelphia Flower Show would be complete without South Jersey’s own, Waldor Orchids. Located on a quiet street in Linwood, you would never know that the modest looking building and greenhouses are homebase for the internation-
ally known orchid growers. But the Off family has been displaying their award-winning orchids at the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show since the mid-1930s with no sign of slowing down. Started in 1829 by the Philadelphia Horticultural Society (PHS), the flower show boasts itself as the “nation’s largest and longest-running horticultural event”. This year, the show makes history by moving the venue

What a fitting location for the flower show with the 2021 theme, “HABITAT: Nature’s Masterpiece”. But moving the event outside subjects the flower show to conditions that can’t be controlled, such as the weather. Exhibit designer and third generation orchid grower David Off, of Waldor Orchids, sees the change to the great outdoors as a challenge to embrace. Instead of working against the elements, Off has used the sun, rain, and heat to his advantage in his display. ight in Venice will return to Ocean City for the 66th time at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2021. Registration is now open to all boat and bayfront home owners who want to participate in this year’s celebration. The optional theme will be “Honoring Our Heroes,” a salute to all those who helped us get through the year. Participants are also encouraged to use last year’s planned “Olympics” theme. A fireworks display will light up the bay and cap off the festivities. The boat parade and decorated bayfront home contest provide a chance to be part of the highlight of the summer season in Ocean City. Thousands of spectators line the bayfront, and thousands more attend private parties at homes along the route from the Ocean City-Longport Bridge to Tennessee Avenue. T
he Jersey Shore has arguably the most famous boardwalks in the world. The Ocean City boardwalk, in particular, offers families a myriad of fun options. Each year, families from all over the tri-state area descend on Ocean City for a vacation filled with sand, sea, dining, rides and unbeatable entertainment. One of the most special parts of the Shore are the amazing store owners who work tirelessly each summer to provide customers with the trendiest products of the year. Whether its clothes, souvenirs, artwork, or jewelry, the store owners at the shore always stock the latest trends at unbeatable prices. Three of the most popular stores on the boardwalk are Bad Kitty (1064 Boardwalk), The Henna Shop (9174 Boardwalk), and the Surf Mall (1154 Boardwalk). Okay. Full disclaimer, they are the favorite stores of my young niece and my older stepdaugh-
ter. However, they are exactly where I head to when I am looking to purchase a gift for them because I know I am always going to find something that they both love at their respective stores. Bad Kitty Kids can only be described as a little girl’s utopia. From stuffed plush mermaids to fluorescent pink tutus, this is somewhere every girl from the ages of 2-11 could spend hours without getting bored.
The store has been a core part of Ocean City’s identity for 20 years and is owned by Chrissy Triggiani. They sell the cutest outfits adorned with unicorns, butterflies, rainbows, and just about everything else that is adored by pre-teens. If you are looking for a fun day out with your daughter, granddaughter, niece, or goddaughter, take her here and I promise you will be her favorite for a long time to come. Their most pop-
ular items are their hair accessories, including hair wraps and feather hair extensions, which have been making a comeback thanks to Tik Toker, Addison Rae. Chrissy also forecasts this year’s hottest toy to be the pop fidget, something that can only be described as reusable bubble wrap which comes in all sorts of shapes and colors. With a tough year last year due to COVID-19, Chrissy said she expects this year to be especially busy; however, Bad Kitty Kids have implemented several procedures to ensure their customers are safe at all times. Hair wraps will operate by appointment only and the staff have reduced to ensure there is no overcrowding in the store, and the changes have been nothing but positive. “We were pleasantly surprised. It really improved our store operations. We have been operating the same way for 20 years. It took a pandemic to force us to make some changes that were necessary.” explained Chrissy. The Henna Shop opened 22 years ago on the Ocean City boardwalk and has always been one of the most popular stores with lines frequently appearing outside as people wait to get their temporary summer ink. For those unsure what Henna is exactly, Steffi explains that “Henna is not an ink, it is leaves crushed into a powder. Our Henna is often from India or Morocco, and we use the newest, freshest Henna that we can buy each season. This plant is all natural and good for your skin. We make the paste in our own kitchen and do not add any inks or dyes to our Henna. It often contains lemon, tea, sugar, and eucalyptus.” Steffi and her team are undoubtedly artistically gifted and create some of the most beautiful and funky designs which allow people to express themselves. Last year, the most popular design was sunflowers, and waves are usually a popular design each year. However, it is difficult to predict what will take off this season. They also sell an array of beautiful jewelry geared towards young adults, and this is also a great place to find beautifully dyed hair feathers in all kinds of colors and patterns, from neutral to rainbow. Steffi is feeling incredibly optimistic about this summer and cannot wait to get going. “We can already see that this summer is going to be fantastic. I think everyone is tired of the pandemic, the mask wearing and social distancing. Dig Into Loaded Deviled Eggs By Linda Arceo
I
s it really a true summer cookout without deviled eggs? Loved by many, deviled eggs are a tried-andtrue crowd favorite. This bite-sized appetizer combines that oldschool nostalgia with big-time flavor for a summer recipe that is perfect for your next potluck picnic or barbecue.
Loaded Deviled Eggs
Prep Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 10 mins Ingredients ● 6 eggs ● 1/3 cup, ranch dressing ● 1 green onion, chopped ● 1/2 fresh jalapeño pepper, finely chopped and deseeded ● 3 TBS shredded cheddar cheese ● 2 TBS crumbled bacon ● salt and pepper to taste
Instructions Hard boil the eggs. Allow to cool. Peel the eggs and cut them in half lengthwise. To prepare the filling, carefully scoop the egg yolks out with a spoon into a medium-sized bowl. Add the ranch dressing mustard, onion, cheese and bacon to the bowl. Add most of the jalapeño pepper, reserving just a small amount to garnish the top of the eggs. Mix the ingredients together. Arrange the egg whites on a platter. Transfer the egg mixture to a resealable bag, snip the corner, and pipe the filling into each egg white half until fully loaded. Garnish the top of each filled egg with some chopped jalapeño pepper.
Tips for Making and Eating These Deviled Eggs ● You can make these eggs up to 24 hours in advance. ● The egg filling can be made up to two days in advance and stored in an air-tight container until you are ready to assemble the deviled eggs.

You can use a pastry bag to fill the eggs or use a resealable plastic bag with the corner cut. Once the eggs are assembled, they should be kept cool. This recipe can be doubled for a crowd.
Other Ways to Prepare Deviled Eggs If you’re looking for even more ways to prepare and enjoy deviled eggs all summer long, here are a few more filling ideas and flavor combinations. ● Hummus: Mash the yolks with 1/3 cup hummus and the juice of 1/2 lemon. Season with salt and pepper. Fill the egg whites. Top with sliced kalamata olives and chopped parsley to garnish.

Spoon into the egg whites; top with chopped pickled ginger and sesame seeds.

Paddle for a Cause Hits The Water This Saturday By: Valerie Lonkart
O
n Saturday, June 12, 2021, approximately 75 participants will converge on Ski Beach in Ventnor Heights to partake in this year's Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation's Paddle for a Cause. This marks the thirteenth anniversary of the event, which returns after a break in 2020. This year's Paddle for a Cause offers something for everyone. Those wanting an endurance event can paddle in the 22-mile, around the island race. For those wanting something a little bit less grueling, there is the 6-mile paddle-at-yourown-pace option. And if team sports are more your speed, gather four to six friends and join the Supsquatch 1 miler, which is the paddleboard version of a dragon boat, minus the drum. This year's event and afterparty will be held at Ski Beach, which is at the end of Dorset Avenue in Ventnor Heights. The afterparty will begin at 1 p.m. at the same location as the race, which is a departure from previous years. "We want to make this more of a family event," said current DRCF President Brady Middlesworth.
The afterparty is being hosted by Bocca Restaurant and will feature music by Mel and Tony. While admission is free, those wanting to eat or drink can pay as they go. There will be plenty of DRCF merchandise for sale, and of course, donations are always welcome. According to Middlesworth, Paddle for a Cause was born when seven friends of local surf legend Dean Randazzo opted to paddle around Absecon Island as a show of solidarity to Randazzo and others who were battling cancer. From there the event has grown to include
close to 100 participants. The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation hopes to raise $75,000 with this year's Paddle for a Cause. Each participant sets a fundraising goal, and through donations from family and friends, reaches that goal. Randazzo and friends launched the foundation after Randazzo himself battled Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation was created in 2001 with the mission to promote cancer awareness within the surfing community and to provide financial support to people battling cancer. "Dean wanted to help people in similar situations, to turn something negative into something positive," Middlesworth said. Since its inception in 2001, The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation has strived to provide need-based financial assistance directly to people who have cancer. To date, the foundation has donated over $500,000 to people in need. The organization has also provided grants to Gilda's Club of South Jersey, Shore Medical Cancer Center, The Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer Fund, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Jersey, AtlantiCare, and Cape Regional
Cancer Center. A nationally-registered non-profit 501(c)(3), the foundation is run by a dedicated group of volunteers. This allows DRCF to donate approximately 90% of its proceeds, directly helping members of our community. To register for the paddle, to make a donation or to sponsor a paddler, please visit the DRCF website at thedrcf.org. Online registration closes Friday, June 11, 2021. Summertime Dreams

W
e all have dreams; things we'd like to do, places we'd like to go. Don't tell me you never dream. From our earliest years, we dream. As a child, our teacher would shake us as she walked by our desk in class. "Stop daydreaming," she'd say. We'd wake in the middle of the night having dreamed; sometimes good dreams, some times not so good. Think back as a child, the dreams you had, how they changed as you grew and often faded to the deepest recesses of your mind. As life 'happened' the years passed by and for many the dream disappeared. All too often, life does 'happen'. It happens in such a way that we find our dreams don't match with the realities we face. We grow up. The ideals and hopes, the plans and aspirations meet the challenges of finding a job, making a living, raising a family. One day we wake to find that much of what we had hoped for, the moon we intended to lasso, the giants we intended to slay either seem unreachable, unrealistic or just not as interesting as they once were. If you can relate to any of what I'm saying, don't worry. You're not alone. What I’ve described is reality for most of us. Most of the time we think of goal setting, writing down our dreams and aspirations and ‘re-setting’ our priorities
as something you usually do in the beginning of a new year. But in reality, there is nothing magical about a new year. So, my challenge to you as you get ready to settle into the new season of summer is to take this time to do a reset. Revisit some of the dreams you’ve put on the back shelf. After all, you’re not getting any younger. Maybe it’s time to dream again. Only this time, put legs to those dreams. I’m not talking about someone else’s dream for your life. I’m talking about your dream. Start by asking these three questions. ● What are the dreams that comes to mind; something I’ve always wanted to achieve or pursue? ● What steps do I need to take to move in the direction of those dreams? ● How can I hold myself accountable to someone else to make sure I pursue them? Again, Make sure they are your dreams. Too many times we listen to the voices around us (most of the time they mean well) that tell us “you know you should really….. or I’ve always thought it would be great for you to….”. You fill in the blank all the time realizing it really isn’t YOUR dream. You need to own it, take the steps toward it and lock arms with someone who will support you on your journey. High School Student Promotes Autism Awareness Distributes Decals Alerting Emergency Responders

high school honors student and summer resident in Ocean City wants to help emergency responders and young people on the autism spectrum. There have been incidents in which children with autism have hidden from firefighters during a fire, or cases where police officers misinterpreted the actions of people on the spectrum as aggressive, including situations where the individual was non-verbal. Joelle McElroy, finishing up her junior year at Riverside High School, is helping distribute decals that state “Be aware. Be understanding. Occupant with autism. May not be able to talk or respond to verbal commands.” The decals can be affixed to vehicles, windows or doors, giving a responder or others a heads-up that an individual may not respond to instructions or questions the way someone else might. McElroy has distributed the decals to local real estate offices, so summer visitors can use them, and has been in contact with Ocean City officials about the program.

According to McElroy, the decals were designed and provided by Lou Berman Sr., who founded Louie’s Voice, an advocacy group for individuals and families impacted by autism. His son, Louie Berman Jr., is non-verbal. Berman has posted to his website louiesvoice.com images of bruises on his son, which he said were received while he was in a congregate care

Meet Photographer Derrick Logan Shore Local Talent By Krystle J. Bailey

isual artist Derrick Logan of Egg Harbor Township found healing in photography and videography 15 years ago and hasn’t put down the camera since.
“Life slows down behind the camera,” notes the 41-year-old, father of two. Originally from Bridgeton, NJ, Logan discovered his passion for photography unintentionally in 2007. In an effort to combat a bout of anxiety, he picked up a camera as a means of art therapy and never looked back. Logan, who has been in the casino industry for over 20 years, works his day job as an Atlantic City bartender. When he’s not busy behind the bar,
you can find him out in nature with his camera or shooting video content for local talent “Out in nature, it’s just me and my camera. It became my therapy and played a big role in my mental health,” explains Logan. Derrick’s evolution as an artist has been transformative. As a budding visual artist in the early 2000’s, Logan found his creativity limited by the “rules” of photography. As he began to explore his own unique style and
pushed the boundaries of traditional photography, Logan’s work sailed to new creative heights. Now, as a highly sought after visual artist, Logan delivers an incomparable photography experience for his clients. “There used to be so much pressure so I’d overthink. intention of serving others. What was once a coping mechanism for anxiety has become a passion, a career, and a purpose. Creating visual art through music videos has also become a niche for Logan. Since his life pivoted away from creating music himself, he has used videography to stay connected to the music world while simultaneously giving back to the people that he loves. Logan uses his gifts to give back to the community as well, donating his time to Gilda’s Club and The American Alzheimer's Association. When asked about his most memorable project, Derrick tells the story of his late friend, Destination, a christian rap artist who inspired Derrick to live to his fullest potential. Stories of Destination pausing video shoots to
pray for strangers remind Derrick of the organic life experiences that he aims to capture through his art. It is this organic art that Derrick brings forth every day in his work, whether he is alone in nature capturing the minute details of a feather or creating a full music video for a friend. Derrick’s candid work holds profound significance as well. His ability to capture deep, raw moments as they are unfolding tells an intricate story of human nature. Dealing with Metabolic Syndrome Nutrition By Nancy Adler
A
bdominal obesity means that a person is not only obese, but the weight concentrates in the middle part of the body. Usually, the measurement of the waist circumference is as follows: 102 centimeters or more in men, 88 centimeters or more in women, 90 centimeters or more in Asian American men and 80 centimeters or more in Asian American women. The bigger the measurement of the circumference is, the higher is the likelihood of disease. It serves as a symptom of metabolic syndrome. If you notice you carry your weight in your midsection, you may want to be checked by a physician. Metabolic syndrome isn’t a single disease; it’s a cluster of different conditions which usually require lab work and tests to confirm. The metabolic risk factors typically occur among people who are overweight or obese, including those who have type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In this article I would like to discuss the different symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Since it’s broader than a single disease, it may be more challenging to diagnose. If you notice any of these symptoms, you should consider going to the doctor to have yourself checked. If diagnosed with
metabolic syndrome , may the the reason you’ve been struggling with you weight . You may have resistance to hormones . When you have resistance to a specific hormone, your body is unable to properly use it to process sugar, leading to high blood glucose levels. If this symptom is not checked or treated, it can eventually lead to prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. When you don’t have enough, the excess glucose builds up in your bloodstream. This problem can lead to more serious illnesses or disorders. Irregularities in your blood and Abnormalities in your blood aren’t readily noticeable. If you’re concerned, you should see a specialist to have a blood test to check for increased C-reactive protein; if you have increased levels of this protein in your blood, you may need to undergo further testing to determine if you have Metabolic Syndrome. High blood pressure – equal to or greater than 130/85 mmHg – can also impact your body and require management to prevent damage to your heart. Please be aware that Other diseases can be a symptom of Metabolic Syndrome. The likelihood of having it increases when you have: cardiovascular disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome. When you already have these illnesses, it is best for you to have regular checkups to watch your health. Forgoing such checkups might lead you to develop a new disease. You can speak to your physician about the likelihood of getting this disorder based on your current diagnoses.
Atherogenic Dyslipidemia . This symptom can be a sign of many different conditions. When you have Atherogenic Dyslipidemia, it means you have elevated levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides and low levels of “good cholesterol” (HDL) in your blood. Your body needs balanced cholesterol and triglyceride levels to reduce the risk of heart disease and other issues. Since you can't see this symptom physically, you should ask your doctor to check your cholesterol levels at your yearly physical to ensure that you’re not at risk. Many of my clients initially complain of experiencing tiredness or fatigue which can also be a symptom of Metabolic Syndrome. This notion is especially true if you experience this after you eat your meals. If you notice tiredness without a cause, like stress or too little sleep, you may want to consult a specialist to make sure your metabolic levels, hormones, and other factors that could impact your alertness are normal. Aside from being tired, you may start experiencing what’s known as “brain fog.” This condition is when you are unable to focus on something

properly. Even though there are no distractions around you, you may find yourself spacing out. If this happens to you while you’re performing a familiar task, and it’s never happened before, it could be a sign of an underlying problem that could be quite serious. If you rule out the common causes of brain fog, like fatigue and stress, and find that you still have episodes, you should speak to your doctor and get a professional opinion. Aside from all these, you might start feeling and seeing other physical changes, which could be signs of several different illnesses, including Metabolic syndrome. You might feel thirst which comes with frequent urination, frequent feelings of fatigue and even blurred vision. When these symptoms come out of nowhere and with no apparent cause, it would be best to visit your physician and seek professional medical advice to get yourself well. Another symptom , which can start to turn the folds of your skin brown. The browning is visible on your neck, armpits or groin and between your butt cheeks. If you notice browning that doesn’t go away with a good shower, then you might want to speak to your doctor . This can be a symptom of Metabolic syndrome, though it’s uncommon. A doctor can help you identify the cause and take the necessary steps to treat the condition to stop it from spreading. Having high levels of triglycerides or a high blood glucose level is never a good thing. If your triglyceride level is equal to or higher than 150 mg/dL or your fasting glucose is equal to or higher than 100 mg/dL, you may have Metabolic syndrome. You should also check your cholesterol levels. If the levels of HDL cholesterol in your body are irregular – lower than 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women – it could be a sign of Metabolic syndrome. A Retrospective on South Jersey History:
WWII and the Anchor at Absecon Lighthouse

W
hen the U.S. entered World War II in December 1941, New Jersey became a vital component of our nation’s war effort. More than 560,000 state resident served in the armed forces, serving at home and abroad. In New Jersey, all sectors of U.S. society were mobilized to support the U.S. war endeavor. Lookout towers were constructed and placed atop large buildings, while in Cape May, Battery 223 was used for vital defenses and radio communications. Today, these structures are on permanent display for residents and guests to see. But there is one piece of history that sits along the grounds of one of Atlantic City’s’s most historic structures. Guests who visit the Absecon
Lighthouse may notice an anchor, weighing in at 1,805 pounds. It is one of only two recovered by fishing boat crews near Cape May. It is believed that the anchor sailed aboard the United States Nav y Destroyer Jacob Jones during World War II. The USS Jacob Jones was built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden, New Jersey and named in honor of Commodore Jacob Nicholas Jones, who was an of-
ficer in the Navy during the First and Second Barbary Wars, and the War of 1812. During the late 1910s, the Jones served as a training vessel for Philadelphia and Pensacola, Florida, before departing for San Diego in 1920. The vessel operated on anti-aircraft and firing exercises for just over a year, before being sent for repairs. Within two years, the Jones was decommissioned and sent on reserve. In 1930, Jones was recommissioned for training off the coast of Alaska and Mexico. On April 4, 1940, during World War II, Jacob Jones joined the Neutrality Patrol, patrolling the waters just off the U.S. coast in an effort to emphasize the readiness of the country and to defend the Western Hemisphere. The vessel was sent on numerous missions from New
London, Connecticut to Key West and Yucatan Peninsula. On the morning of February 27, 1942, the Jones departed New York Harbor, traveling southward along the New Jersey coast. The crew were assigned to search the area between Barnegat Light and the Five Fathom Bank light station, located just offshore from the Cape May Lighthouse. Shortly after departing, she was given orders to patrol the waters between Cape May and the Delaware Capes. At the height of World War II, a lookout tower, known as Fire Control Tower No. 23, was constructed along the Delaware Bay, near Sunset Beach. Built in 1942 as part of the Immense Harbor Defense System, Tower 23 it was one of 15 towers constructed between North Wildwood and Bethany Beach. The lookout tower played a pivotal role in coastal defenses and aimed batteries of coastal artillery. Today, the tower remains on display for visitors to our region as part of Cape May Point State Park. In 2003, the landmark was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At dawn on February 28, 1942, an undetected German U-boat fired torpedoes at the unwary destroyer. Survivors of the blast noted that two of the three torpedoes struck Jones’ port side, causing major damage. Between 25-30 crew members lost their lives in the incident, including Lieutenant Commander Black. Today, the anchor is on permanent display along the grounds of the Absecon Lighthouse as a reminder of the many lives that have been lost at sea, and a World War II replica. Last week, Jon Henderson and the folks at Good Time Tricycle held the first major outdoor event in the state of New Jersey as they held the 16th annual Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival outside at Bader Field. More than 15-thousand people attended over three sessions on Friday and Saturday, including one celebrity brewery owner. Yes, that WAS actor Kelsey Grammer at the Faith American Brewing Company tent happily taking pictures and talking about his beer with anyone who wanted to chat. Most famously known for his role as “Frasier Crane” on the TV shows “Cheers” and “Frasier”, the 66-year-old is the owner of Faith American Brewing Company, LLC out of Margaretville, New York. Of course, there are several local breweries right here in Atlantic County including Tuckahoe Brewing Company, Pinelands Brewing Company, Garden State Beer Company, Hidden Sands Brewing Company and Somers Point Brewing Company. But, I’m not here to write about beer, I’m here to write about sports (and entertainment). In sports, since I last wrote, the Sixers beat the Wizards without Joel Embiid, but then lost in Game 1 of the next round to the Atlanta Hawks and their superstar player. The Eagles wrapped up their OTA’s at the NovaCare Complex and now won’t be back in the “nest” until training camp. The Flyers have officially introduced a new coach for their top minor league team, and it’s a familiar face. On the local front, two high school athletes are honored with one of Atlantic County’s most prestigious high school awards. Plus, after a hiatus because of the pandemic, an annual charity event returns to Ski Beach in Ventnor Heights.
From entertainment, the seventh (and final) season of one of my favorite shows on Amazon Prime is all set to drop on June 25th. Plus, I know the first thing I’m binge watching when school lets out and it’s an HBO series that just wrapped up its first season. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● We’ll start with the Sixers as they played Game 5 against the Wizards without Joel Embiid, but still managed to eliminate Washington winning 129-112 at home at home and winning the series 4-1. Curry scored a playoff career-high 30 points, Tobias Harris added 28 points, and Ben Simmons posted a triple-double with 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for the Sixers as they advanced to the next round. But, the big question as the Sixers begin the Eastern Conference Semifinals was whether or not Embiid would be able to return from a slight tear in his right meniscus. The answer was a resounding “YES," but despite leading all scorers with 39 points, the Sixers lost Game 1 (and home court advantage) falling 128-124.

Embiid was dominant with 39 points on 12-for-21 shooting (14for-15 on free throws) and he added nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks. But the Sixers had no answer for Hawks star Trae Young, who hit for 35 points. Young had 25 points and seven assists by halftime for the second time in his career. The first time he did it, on Jan. 30, 2020, also was against Philadelphia. Put this one down as the Sixers showing up “too late” to the party!

Young was initially guarded by Danny Green in Game 1, and that tactic didn’t work. Simmons, a defensive player of the year finalist, has already said he’d like to be put on Young moving forward. Of course, a lot depends on how close the referees call things, as the 6-10 Simmons can sometimes get himself in foul trouble with his physicality. What’s scary to me, is that Embiid played a dominant game, and the Sixers still lost by four. Of course, the Hawks shot 51% from the floor, and 43% from beyond the arc. The Hawks had 74 points at the HALF! You’re not going to win too many games in the NBA when you give up that many points to a team early. In baseball, the Phillies won back to back games for the first time since May 11th and 12th, but where

are the fans? Last Sunday in a four-hour plus game, only 15,108 showed up at Citizens Bank Park to watch a 12-6 win over Washington. Now, the Sixers were in a playoff game across the street at the same time, but still! It was by far the smallest Sunday crowd in the ballpark’s 17-year history, if you exclude pandemic restrictions. In fact, the three-game attendance of 46,256 was a figure the Phillies nearly drew nightly during their 257-game sellout streak that lasted from July 7, 2009 through Aug. 5, 2012. In that Sunday game against Washington, a few crazy things happened, including one that a veteran baseball employee had never seen before. Let’s start with home-plate umpire Brian O’Nora as he took a foul ball off his mask in the top of the first inning and had to leave in the bottom of the first. Then, Phillies starter Vince Velasquez hit Washington pitcher Austin Voth with a pitch as Voth was attempting to bunt. And Voth had to leave the game after being struck in the face. But, the ultimate “oops” was when the protective netting around home plate came tumbling down with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Apparently, the support rope to

the right of home plate gave way and the netting collapsed onto the field and into both dugouts. Mike DiMuzio, the Phillies director of ballpark operations since 1982, had never seen that happen before in his 50 years around baseball. Director of field operations Mike Boekholder was charged with organizing the grounds crew to formulate a plan to restore the netting. Remarkably, he got the job done, along with members of the grounds crew, ballpark ops, even some concession folks from Aramark! And someone had the genius idea to play the “William Tell Overture” while they were working on the problem. The “netting delay” lasted 20 minutes and

21 seconds, and let me tell you, it was RIVETING television! In football, the Eagles wrapped up their organized team activities, and now first-year coach Nick Sirianni won’t see his guys until training camp on July 27th. After veteran players flat-out refused to attend voluntary camps, the Birds had to pivot to OTA’s that eliminated contact and the mandatory mini-camp that usually closes out the spring. There was no 11-on-11 work this spring, not even any seven-on-seven. Practice was mostly positional drills, and if the offense or defense assembled, it worked against air, maybe with a few coaches offering token resistance. But, in his “glass half full” sort of way, Sirianni did point out that last year, spring work was completely virtual, so by that account, something is better than nothing! And the buzzword of the OTA’s was the word “compete” as Sirianni had drills set up as competitions, in lieu of coaches being able to pit the offense against the defense. To the ice now where the Flyers did NOT get lucky and they will have the number 13 pick in this year’s NHL draft. There was some hope that history would repeat itself and they’d get lucky and move up. That said, it’s still the Flyers highest pick since 2017. The Flyers also officially announced Ian Laperriere as the new head coach of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The man known as “Lappy” says he will stress fitness in the first head-coaching job of his career. He has competed in Ironman triathlons, consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. Laperriere, a hard-nosed player in his 16-season NHL career says “Players that are going to play for me are going to have to be in shape, or I’ll get them in shape. They know that. For me, to be a pro, you’ve got to be a pro 24 hours a day, inside the rink and away from the rink. It

That’s my job to make sure everybody is on the same page.” On the local front, congratulations to Ahmad Brock from Egg Harbor Township and Sophia Pasquale from Holy Spirit as they are the 2021 Nichterlein / McCabe Old Grad Award winners. The “Old Grad” award is given annually to the most outstanding male and female high school senior athlete from Atlantic County and is given to a multi-sport athlete. I’ve been fortunate enough to act as emcee for this prestigious awards ceremony, and although we didn’t have a luncheon again this year because of the pandemic, I look forward to next year when I can celebrate with Brock & Pasquale in person and hear how their first year of collegiate sports went! Lastly on the local front, don’t miss the 13th annual Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation’s “Paddle for a Cause” on Saturday June 12th on Ski Beach in Ventnor Heights. “Paddle for a Cause” was born when eight friends of local surf legend Dean Randazzo, opted to paddle around Absecon Island as a show of solidarity to Randa-

town” on HBO. By all accounts, this is a “can’t miss” series and Kate Winslet gives an award winning performance as a grizzled police detective from Delaware County, PA. Apparently the Delco accent and the local references are a hoot as well. I’m looking forward to checking it out. One last thought, and that’s a reminder for you to check with local establishments and folks about mask on or masks off. A lot of places have moved to a “no mask” policy, but always be sure to be courteous and check what the rules & protocols each place (or person) has. I truly feel we are starting a GREAT summer. Let’s not mess it up now!

Infinite Whisky and How to Make It Good Spirits By David Baldwin

b ottle of whisky is finite. It is opened, enjoyed, and eventually emptied. Despite the fact that whisky doesn’t really “go bad” like wine and beer do once opened, there is a limited amount of liquid to enjoy from each bottle. What if I told you there was a way to make your most precious and beloved whiskies last forever? It is possible. Let me explain. Sourdough bread is often made from a “starter,” which is a combination of flour, water, and of course yeast. A small amount of the starter is used to make a batch of bread and the starter is fed to replenish what was used. Sourdough starters can be old. Years if not decades old in some cases. What does this have to do with whisky? Everything. Despite the obvious connection of fermenting grains, sourdough starters are the heart and soul of the bread. The flavors and textures of the final product are dependent on the quality and contents of the starter. Take care of your starter and you will be making bread for years to come with essentially the same original source. As long as you never use (or lose) the whole starter, there will always be at least some portion of the original starter in there. We can take this concept and apply it to whisky. It’s called an Infinity Bottle. Just like a starter there is no single recipe to make or take care of one. So perhaps it’s best if I explain how I take care of mine. It all starts with an empty whisky bottle that is just too

nice to recycle. Mine was a bottle of Hibiki 12 year. I poured in about one ounce from a number of different single malt scotches I had open. Effectively creating my own blend. I did not pay too much attention to how they may or may not taste mixed together. I had a longer goal in mind. I took note of which bottles went into the blend that day for posterity's sake. From that day forward, I have added the first ounce of each and every single malt scotch I opened to this Infinity Bottle. Recording the names in the same notebook. Once in a while I take a small pour to see how it tastes and to help to keep the bottle from overflowing because there are now over 40 different whiskies written down. Like the sourdough starter this Infinity Bottle contains the remnants of some whiskies that I have long since finished. While I may no longer be able to drink them individually, I have assured, as long as I do not empty the whole bottle, that at least a small portion of these whiskies will live on indefinitely. I am not a baker, but I would imagine there are many who take great pride in their starter. I likewise am immensely proud of my Infinity Bottle and all of the fabulous whisky that has contributed to its development. Begin your own Infinity Bottle today! Or maybe this has inspired you to bake bread which is equally exciting! I will have more to share in the future on Infinity Bottles, but not much more about bread I’m afraid.

Official Celebrity Boxing Takes the Ring at Lucky Snake and Showboat Resort

t first glance, multigenerational living arrangements may seem unusual, but they were once the rule, not the exception. In mid-to-late-nineteenth century America, the majority of elderly parents and grandparents lived with their children. By the twentieth century, this trend steadily declined, hitting a low of about 12 percent of the population in 1980 as per US Census. What's old is new again! Multigenerational living is a booming home trend. In sheer numbers, the sixty-four million Americans living in such homes (which is 20 percent of the country) as of 2016 are the most ever in US history, making in-law suites a desirable home renovation in many ways for you, your family, and potential future buyers,
and thirty somethings are opting to live with or move back in with their parents to focus on their careers or save money. The benefits are tangible, Grandparents get to see their grandkids daily and vice versa, leading to more family bonding-and possibly for the former, less loneliness and more security. Parents potentially have a live-in babysitter. Finances or chores can be shared. More family members visit who normally wouldn't. Multiple Generations have multiple needs. Of course, such living conditions often require adjustments. both from the families and to the houses themselves-especially when it comes to creating an in-law suite. 12 Summer Safety Tips For Dogs
ummer is a great time to go out and have fun with your dog, but there are a few hazards to watch out for. 1. Give Your Dog Plenty of Water & Shade Dogs can’t regulate heat as well as us, so it’s not as easy for them to stay cool. Prolonged heat exposure puts them at risk for developing heat stroke. Keep them inside on days when it’s really hot. 2. Use a Kiddie Pool or Sprinkler to Keep Cool Does your dog love the water? Fill up a kiddie pool with water for your pup to cool off in. I suggest picking up a plastic one, since their nails can tear the softer ones. If you don’t have a kiddie pool, plenty of dogs enjoy playing with the hose or sprinklers. 3. Avoid prolonged exposure to sand and hot asphalt – it can burn your dogs paws. In the summer try to walk your dog in the morning or evening when the pavement isn’t so hot. If you walk during the day stick to grassy or wooded areas. 4. Short Faced Dogs Are More Susceptible to Heat Stroke If you have a short faced dog like a Bulldog or Pug remember that they don’t pant efficiently; they’re much
more susceptible to heat stroke. Bulldogs are especially intolerant to heat. They should have limited access to the outdoors when the weather gets above 80 degrees. 5. Don’t Leave Your Dog Alone in a Hot Car Never leave your dog inside your car in hot weather; a cracked window isn’t enough to keep a car cool. It’s also illegal in most states. Researchers learned that when it’s a sunny 78 degrees, the temperature in a parked car with windows cracked rises at least 32 degrees in 30 minutes. So: 78 degrees to 110 in half an hour. – Don’t Think For a Minute Dogs Can Survive in a Hot Car 6. Avoid Strenuous Exercise Avoid strenuous exercise during extremely hot days & keep the sessions short. The same goes for days with high humidity. For those really hot days check out some simple activities to keep your dog busy indoors. 7. Watch Out For Doggie Sunburn Dogs can get sunburn – especially
light colored dogs with short fur. There are sun protection lotions specifically formulated for dogs. Don’t use human sunscreen on your pet; many of the chemicals are toxic to them. 8. Make Sure Your Pet is Protected from Pests
Ticks and mosquitoes are at their peak in the summer. 9. Watch Your Dog Around Treated Lawns Keep dogs off lawns that have been chemically treated with fertilizer for at least 24 hours. Many of the chemicals used in lawn treatments are toxic to pets. 10. Don’t Let Dogs Drink From Oceans, Lakes or Pools Don’t let your dog drink seawater; it causes dehydration and vomiting. If a dog ingests enough it can be fatal. Bring fresh water for your dog when you’re going out to the beach. 11. Shaving Your Dog Might Not Keep Him Cool Do not shave your dog because he’s panting. If you have a double coated breed their fur is actually providing relief from the heat, and shaving it will make it worse. 12.Make Sure Your Dog is Wearing Identification We spend a lot of time outdoors with our dogs in the summer, and that increases the risk of them running off or getting lost. Make sure your dog has a collar with your phone number on it, and it’s a good idea to have your dog microchipped in case their collar comes off.

Rev up your workout and your metabolism with H.I.I.T (High Intensity Interval Training)

A
re you ready to shake up your workout? Do you wish you could burn more calories without spending more time at the gym? If your answer is yes, then you’ll want to consider aerobic interval training, also known as high-intensity interval training (HIIT). You get more bang for your buck and in less time. I currently teach 2 HIIT classes in Ocean City and they are very popular for all ages and levels. You can achieve the same level of workout even with modifications. I teach to all levels and all ages. My workouts are suitable for twenty somethings up to seventy year olds. You have to present it in a “less scary” manner because when some see those words, HIIT, they run for the hills! This type of exercise was once considered the domain for the elite athletes, but that has been dispelled in recent years because interval training is a powerful tool for the average exerciser! What exactly is it? Let me explain because knowledge is power and it’s not as complicated as you might think. Interval training is simply alternating short bursts (about 30 seconds) of intense activity with longer intervals (about 1 to 2 minutes) of less intense activity. For instance, if your exercise is walking and you're in good shape, you might add short bursts of jogging into your regular brisk walks. If you're less fit, you might alternate leisurely walking with periods of faster walking. If you're walking outdoors, you could walk faster between certain mailboxes, trees or other landmarks. You can make it quite a game. I know I’ve done that with running to improve not only my workout but my speed as well! Whether you're a novice exerciser or you've been exercising for years, interval training can help you make

your workout routine more exciting. The more vigorous you exercise, the more calories you'll burn even if you increase intensity for just a few minutes at a time. Many people don't exercise because they say they don't have time. Interval training enables you to complete an effective workout in less time than a standard cardiovascular workout. You could potentially complete a workout in approximately 15 to 20 minutes instead of 45-60 minutes. As your cardiovascular fitness improves, you'll be able to exercise longer or with more intensity. Imagine finishing your 60 minute walk in 40-45 minutes and the additional calories you'll burn by adding faster intervals. Improving your cardio can also help reduce your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Turning up your intensity in short intervals can add variety to your exercise routine and can be performed while walking, running, biking or swimming. Interval training can also include bodyweight exercises, such as jumping jacks, squats and lunges. They can also be completed with weights by adding in a few fast repetitions that will increase your heart rate. I do those all the time to increase the intensity of the workouts that I instruct. Interval training can also look different each day. It never has to be the same. The length or duration of your intervals is solely up to you. After warming up for a few minutes, you might increase the intensity for 30 seconds and then resume your normal pace. Finish with a cool-down. How much you pick up the pace, how often and for how long is up to you. If you're working toward a specific fitness goal, you may want to take a different approach. A little research or a personal trainer can help you time the intensity and duration of your intervals. Each and everyone of us is different and that also goes
training doesn't have to involve high impact exercise, jumping movements, or heavy weights. Start slowly and try doing just one or two higher intensity intervals during each workout at first. If you think you're overdoing it, slow down. As your fitness ability and stamina improves, challenge yourself to vary the pace. You may be surprised by the results and be very happy with the way your body is responding. Like, I always say, you have to mix things up to see results and push through those plateaus. for our fitness levels. If you’re new to exercise then start this process with caution and it will grow with you as your fitness level improves. If you rush into a strenuous workout before your body is ready, you may injure your muscles, tendons or bones. Interval

What do I need a death certificate for? (Part 3)

any individuals have employer-sponsored retirement programs like a 401(K) or a pension plan. The payment periods and the amounts for each of these plans vary. When a loved one dies try to contact the financial company handling the retirement program as soon as possible to receive the appropriate forms you will need to report the death. The company or more specifically the human resources department for the company will most likely need a certified copy of the death certificate submitted along with the forms. As a side note, some retirement income plans become assets that are transferable to another party, such as the spouse
of the deceased, upon death. These assets cannot be transferred until they receive the information that confirms that the death has occurred, hence the need for the death certificate. When an individual passes away and has stocks, bonds, CD’s, saving’s accounts, checking accounts, or any other type of bank account you will want to get in touch with the bank to let them know that the death has occurred. They will have processes in place for closing those accounts or transferring them to the beneficiaries of the deceased and those processes usually entail a death certificate. If you have stocks or mutual funds purchased through a broker, financial planner or investment firm they will need a death certificate to cash out or transfer the stocks to the beneficiary of said assets.
