was barefaced! Seeing other faces was heartwarming too…especially the smiling ones. But what if I didn't recognize someone? No more blaming it on the mask!

The greatest joy I got was losing the mask in hot yoga class and at the gym. There is something about sweating and masks; they do not pair well. As summer draws near and temperatures rise, I am more than happy to be mask-free. Wearing sunglasses

Aside from start of the holiday weekend, if vaccinated, we could, at last, peel off our masks! I don’t know about you, but I was thrilled. That morning I entered the grocery store, maskLESS for the first time in 15 months.

Initially, I felt nervous, like I was doing something wrong, like all those times I forgot it in the car. Oddly, I felt naked and exposed.

Still, I realize many folks will be wearing masks in the days ahead.

Perhaps they chose not to get the vaccine, or they have compromised immune systems. Whatever the reason, I completely respect their decision. And the beautiful thing about living in America is that we all have personal freedoms and the right to choose what's best for us.

Masks may be gone, but in-person events are BACK and filling up the calendar quickly. I have a renewed appreciation for that! This issue of Shore Local Newsmagazine has all your entertainment and events to enjoy, beginning on page 10.

The first few weeks of June are kind of like the calm before the storm at the Jersey Shore. We enjoy beautiful weather, with only moderate, albeit steady crowds. Once we near the

end of the month it is peak season; in other words, game on!

Forecast: Better weekend weather ahead Weather

T

he first thing they teach you in college as a meteorology major is to keep the weekends nice, especially the holiday weekends. And there are no bigger three holiday weekends each year than the summer ones, Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day. Well after the murky holiday weekend we just muddled our way through, my college professors would be disappointed.

Of course, meteorologists don't control the weather. But another part of our job, besides forecasting, is to put a positive spin on whatever weather hand we're dealt. So let me give it a shot. First, we at least salvaged Memorial Day Monday weather-wise, and one nice day is better than none.

It could indeed be worse, as the Memorial Day weekend back in 2003 had

three consecutive days of gray and gloom, with unseasonably cool highs around or below 60 degrees and rain all three days. Second, our Memorial Day weekend weather is in no way an indication of what the upcoming summer has in store. And third, although this is a much weaker point, we actually needed the rain. We've accumulated a 2 to 4 inch rainfall deficit over the last few months, and a little rain is a good thing. Of course, the timing left a lot to be desired.

And here's one final "positive", as we broke, well actually shattered, two record high temperatures over the weekend. Obviously, it's not the type of record highs you were thinking, as they were safe. The record high for last Saturday (May 29th) is 99 degrees, set in 1969. And the record high for last Sunday (May 30th) was 96 degrees, set more recently in 1991.

See, it can get hot this time of year!

Our high temperatures at the Atlantic City International Airport last Saturday and Sunday were only 54 degrees, the coldest high temperature ever for both dates, and the latest spring days ever that chilly. Meteorologically, that's pretty impressive. If you're a local or vacationer with beach plans for the holiday weekend however, you were

probably depressed, not impressed.

Sure, it can be hot and even humid in late May. We've had Memorial Day weekends in the past with several 90-degree days, and what is considered to be the unofficial kickoff to summer was fittingly hot and sticky.

But there's several things working against the last weekend of May having a summery feel. First, there are still pools of cool air lingering in eastern Canada, some of which find their way down to the Jersey shore on occasion.

Second and probably more influential are the still cool ocean waters sitting just off our coast, which can play a big role in keeping the Memorial Day holiday weekend similarly cool and sometimes gray and gloomy. The average ocean temperature in late May after all is only around 60 degrees, and any winds off that ocean will keep temperatures on the beaches rather cool. Finally, late spring is the last hurrah for coastal lows, which sometimes stall and get stuck off our coast, like last weekend.

So yes, we have nowhere to go but up from here in terms of warmer and brighter weather. And we have two more shots at enjoying perfect holiday weekend weather, the July 4th weekend (with July 4th actually on a Sunday this year) and the Labor Day weekend (September 4th-6th later this summer). But what does history tell us about those weekends?

While the Memorial Day weekend is often the "iffiest" and the most highly variable (from 54 degrees to 99 degrees in terms of high temperatures), the Fourth Of July weekend is known to be the hottest. That makes perfect sense, as July is usually the hottest month of the year in South Jersey with the most 90-degree days and most frequent and longest lasting heat waves. Of course, heat and humidity are the fuel that fire up those

gully-washing and sometimes severe thunderstorms. And that's a price we often pay for the hot weather in early July, as 'Mother Nature's fireworks" have occasionally interfered with the manmade pyrotechnic displays that mark our Independence Day celebrations.

Then comes Labor Day weekend in early September, which usually brings the nicest weather of any summer holiday weekend. Our cold late May Atlantic Ocean has warmed nicely, reaching its warmest point of the year around Labor Day (in the low to mid 70s). The worst of the mid-summer heat and humidity has passed, which means less fuel to fire up showers and thunderstorms. And as long as there are no tropical threats, a big if as early September is the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, summer goes out in a blaze of glory weather-wise with warm, comfortable, and dry weather. I use the same reasoning when I advise people that September and not May is the best time of year for outdoor weddings at the Jersey shore, even though May is the more popular month.

So here's hoping that by the end of the summer, despite our Memorial Day weather malaise, we'll be saying two out of three ain't bad and get a little weather redemption. Time will tell.

Sea Goddess Healing Arts sooths the soul

“A

healer is someone who triggers within you the ability to heal yourself,” explains Mandee Elam, co-founder of Sea Goddess Healing Arts.

Born out of a deep desire for human connection and collective healing, Sea Goddess Healing Arts emerged to serve the community in a beautiful new way. A group of heart-led healing artists combined their gifts to collectively serve as a “lighthouse for the soul” at the Jersey Shore.

The Sea Goddess story has a deeply rooted history in Atlantic City.

Rachel Ahava, daughter of the infamous piano man, Charlie Birnbaum, found solitude in the building that Birnbaum fought hard to keep during a drawn out eminent domain case.

Rachel, originally from Hammonton,

moved to Atlantic City seeking healing after her divorce. In divine timing and with a renewed energy, Ahava found herself in the midst of a group of women that would soon become her soul sisters.

The trio formed quickly, as Ahava was immediately drawn to intuitive ascension guide, Mandee Elam and astrologer, Ursula Duffy. After a gathering at Ahava’s home in February of 2020, the group of women knew that they were meant to coexist with one another. How it would manifest was yet to be determined.

When the Covid-19 pandemic rocked everyone’s world, it was this soul-level connection that held everyone up. The group of women, along with Kendra Hammell, began a group message thread that as Hammell explained, “gave space to have free thought.”

Hammel, a crystal and Reiki master, described the group of women saying, “These women have allowed me to speak my truth. I know I could not have done it alone. They allow me to be who I want to be.”

The connections grew deeper as the year passed. Then one night, Elam was woken from her sleep with a detailed vision of a sea goddess. Ahava, an accomplished graphic designer, brought the sea goddess image to life, which now serves as the Sea Goddess Healing Arts logo.

“She represents all of us,” explains Ahava, referring to the feminine energy that the sea goddess logo represents.

Following their intuition and trusting the timing of things, the trio officially formed Sea Goddess Healing Arts in the beginning of 2021. They began offering several gatherings centered around various healing modalities, which quickly led to the vision for a Light and Sound Healing Arts Festival.

The festival came together within two months and with “unbelievable ease,” as explained by Ahava.

On May 1, 2021, the Absecon Lighthouse was beautifully lit up with the colors of the rainbow, representing each of the seven energy chakras. The grounds at the lighthouse were transformed into an entire meditative space as the lighthouse was used to amplify the healing sounds of a crystal singing bowl.

The event included an afternoon of yoga classes, live music, meditations, and workshops all centered around intuitive, energy healing. With sponsors such as Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Stockton University, Meet AC, Higher Self Healing, The Leadership Studio, and several others, the group raised $5,000 for the Absecon Lighthouse.

The Light and Sound Healing Arts

Festival served as a launching pad for so much more to come from the Sea Goddess Healing Arts collective. On June 13th, the goddesses will be hosting the first Surf & Soul Drum Circle co-hosted by Kind Magma Music. Attendees are encouraged to bring a drum, shaker, tambourine or any instrument and come “vibe with your tribe” at this free beach event. On June 25th, Sea Goddess Healing Arts will hold space as an official vendor at the cannabis inspired Boardwalk Budz event. Information for that can be found at Boardwalk Budz Atlantic City on Facebook.

Meet Jim Crane, the Singing Lifeguard Shore Local Talent

J

im Craine, also known as “The Singing Lifeguard” has been entertaining the South Jersey area for 47 years. This summer, live performances are back in full swing featuring Jim Craine and the Atlantic City All Star Band.

Jim runs the gamut when it comes to entertainment. As a comedian, singer, impressionist, and music shop owner, one would think Jim’s schedule is too full for anything else. However, you can hear him every Saturday night on WOND-AM radio hosting the only primetime entertainment show in the area.

Jim’s story began in Atlantic City where he was born and raised. In 1963 he started working on the Steel Pier where he would do just about anything to be involved in show business, including but not limited to “cleaning up” behind the infamous diving horses.

During his formative years at Steel Pier, Jim had the honor of meeting and learning from some of the greats in entertainment. From sitting on

the piano bench with Duke Ellington to witnessing Michael Jackson’s first tour, Jim’s famous line is, “you name the act, I saw them.”

For 25 years, Jim served as a lifeguard with the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, earning him the nickname, “The Singing Lifeguard.”

Being the “jack of all trades” that Jim is, it is no surprise that his live performances offer audience members a full entertainment experience. Playing alongside his band of 47 years, Jim brings his musical performances, comedy, impressions, and nostalgic stories to one stage.

This summer, Jim Craine and the Atlantic City All Star Band are back on the road. They will be opening the Brigantine Community Center June 9th from 7-9pm to kick off the summer season. Then on June 25th, the band will perform the opening concert for the Rhythm in the Park Series at the Tony Canale Amphitheatre in Egg Harbor Township.

When Jim is not busy performing or hosting radio show guests, you can find him at his family owned music shop in Pleasantville or volunteering his time for the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. The Pleasantville Music Shoppe has been in the family for over 83 years. Now run by Jim Craine and his wife, the shop once

belonged to Jim’s father in law.

Jim’s entire life has been centered around music in some capacity.

After all these years in show business, Jim explains that he has just as much fun performing with his band as he did in the beginning. Show business is in Jim’s DNA and South Jersey has had the pleasure of enjoying his performances for nearly 50 years.

Strawberry-Inspired Recipes for Strawberry Season

trawberry season has arrived in southern New Jersey. With fresh, local strawberries hitting the farmers markets and stores, it is time to sink your teeth into the sweet taste of season with these delicious and simple strawberry-inspired recipes for strawberry season.

Strawberries are great on their own and are even better in pastries, drinks and desserts. Choose from these three recipes to make the most of your summer berry bounty.

Easy Puff Pastry BerryCheese Danish

4-6 servings | Cook time 10 min.

Ingredients ● 2 sheets puff pastry; thawed ● 8 oz cream cheese; at room temperature ● 1/3 cup sugar ● 1 tsp vanilla extract ● 2 eggs, divided ● 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for rolling and work space dusting) ● fresh strawberries, sliced ● handful of blueberries ● powdered sugar (optional)

Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese and sugar and cream together until smooth. Add vanilla and 2 egg yolks and stir until just combined.

On a floured surface, unfold both sheets of puff pastry and roll and stretch each sheet until it is about the size of a baking sheet. Place one puff pastry sheet on top of the other and roll with rolling pin to merge together.

Score and cut the puff pastry sheet into 15 equal squares. Spoon a tablespoon of cream cheese filling into the center of each square. Top with a few fresh strawberry slices and blueberries. Combine reserved egg whites with 2 tablespoons of water to make an egg wash. Brush unbaked puff pastry danish with an egg white

wash. Bake in 400 degree oven for 10 minutes or until golden brown, rotating the pans once halfway through.

Dust with powdered sugar prior to serving (optional).

Strawberry Dessert Tacos

6 servings | Cook time 10 minutes

Ingredients 1/2 cup white granulated sugar ● 1 TBSP cinnamon ● 1 cup vegetable oil ● 6 small flour tortillas ● 1 cup, fresh strawberries, sliced ● 1 pint, vanilla ice cream ● chocolate syrup ● chocolate sprinkles ●

Strawberry Lemonade Refresher

1 serving | Cook time 5 minutes

Ingredients 1 cup lemonade ● 1 lemon, sliced ● 1/2 cup strawberries, sliced ● 1/2 cup fresh blueberries ● splash of lemon-lime soda or seltzer ●

Directions Fill a mason jar with ice and line inside with lemon slices. Add a handful of sliced strawberries and blueberries to the jar. Fill with lemonade and finish with a splash of lemon-lime soda or seltzer.

Directions In a large shallow dish mix together the granulated sugar and the cinnamon. Set to the side.

In a large skillet heat the canola oil until hot. Place one tortilla in the skillet cook for 10 seconds then using tongs flip over. Remove from the skillet, drain quickly on a paper towel. Dip both sides in the cinnamon sugar. Shake excess cinnamon sugar off and quickly fold while tortilla is still warm. Repeat until all the taco shells are cooked.

Once the taco shells are cooked, fill tacos with 1-2 small scoops of vanilla ice cream, drizzle with chocolate syrup and top with sliced strawberries. Sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles. Serve quickly.

Strawberry season is short, but sweet. Visit your local farmers market or pick-your-own strawberry patch for fresh, plump strawberries and celebrate this seasonal fruit one bite at a time.

Ocean City gathers for Memorial Day

undreds gathered at Veterans’ Memorial Park on Monday morning to remember those lost in America’s wars.

Veterans spoke of sacrifices made for freedom, and the need to remember.

Michael Morrissey, the commander of VFW Post 6650 in Ocean City, said Memorial Day marks the start of the tourist season.

“So it’s a good time to remember those that stormed the beaches in faraway countries so that we can enjoy our beaches here in America,” he said.

“Although today is a day to remember the men and women who died for our freedom, it is not a sad day but a respectful day.”

The sun occasionally peeked through overcast skies while the service proceeded, after a chilly and rain-washed holiday weekend.

Morrissey said it is fine to enjoy the long weekend, to celebrate with a barbecue or hit the beach, but asked that people keep in mind the purpose of the holiday.

“When you see a veteran today, don’t say ‘happy Memorial Day.’ Because there is no happiness in knowing about the veterans who did not return. It’s a solemn day,” said Bob Marzulli, the commander of American Legion Post 524. “When you see a vet today, thank them for their service.”

Morrissey thanked the members of Boy Scout Troop 32 who participated in the service, and the Ocean City Police and firefighters for their work on the event. Lines of police officers and firefighters stood at attention under a huge flag suspended from a fire truck ladder through the service.

Morrissey also praised the city’s support for the local veteran organizations, singling out Mayor Jay Gillian.

For some, it was the largest gathering they attended in more than a year as state restrictions on public events eased with increasing numbers of people vaccinated and new cases of COVID-19 dropping. Residents and visitors filled the stands and lined the sidewalks, with many gathered on the far side of a memorial wall in the park.

Veterans Joe Bisbing and Tom Dahl placed a wreath at the base of the city’s memorial to veterans of all wars. The ceremony also included the performance of taps by Greg Murphy of Buglers Across America, and Junior Miss Ocean City Natalie Argento sang “God Bless America.”

Jack Hagen, the adjutant for the American Legion post, described a table set in honor of those taken as prisoners of war or those missing in action, discussing the meaning of each element on the table, including a lemon, for the bitterness of the experience, and an overturned glass.

“They cannot toast with us,” he said.

The names of those from Ocean City lost in combat were read out.

As is a tradition in Ocean City, the event also included playing a medley of the songs from each branch of the service, with veterans standing for their branch.

Michael Allegretto, named the aide to Mayor Jay Gillian last year, spoke on Gillian’s behalf about the flag raising ceremony that has been moved to the Music Pier on the Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace after taking place for years in front of a nearby waterpark.

The flag raising is set to take place every morning at 8:50 through Sept.

11, to include the national anthem and “God Bless the USA.” Over the weekend, a flagpole was dedicated at the pier to local veterans Joe Caserta, James Robinson and Bill Cruice.

Beat the heat by exercising in the pool

E

xercising in the pool is great for so many reasons and it keeps your body temperature regulated in the hotter months. Exercising in the water helps the body cool off faster and reduces the risk of overheating. If the water is warm, it may not help keep you cool, but it does help increase blood circulation, which is a plus when exercising.

Water gives you buoyancy and this decreases the impact on your joints, so when you swim or exercise in the water, you have a lower risk of injury. The water also has built in resistance and since you’re moving your body through water instead of through air, you’re working harder.

This resistance is great for building all-around strength and endurance.

You can also add water weights or

pool noodles to increase this resistance. Depending on your speed, position, or form in the water, the resistance you face is dynamic. For example, if you’re jogging or running in water, you’re getting much more resistance if the water is at about chest level and you’re working at really getting those knees up. I can tell you from experience, that you can really get your heart rate up with this type of training. This can be extremely helpful if you’re training to improve your running speed, strength, and endurance when on land.

Since exercising in the water is low impact, your joints stay nimble. With the built in resistance of the water, swimming and water exercise is great for keeping your muscles toned. Many people with injuries rely on water exercise. Exercising in the water is not only low impact, but it’s also excellent

for back support. It supports your back because you don’t have to worry about the weight of your body on your spine or your posture when you move your body through water.

The bonus of exercising in the pool is that you can go as hard as you want. Increase your speed, go deeper in the water or add extra resistance via water weights or noodles. That's the beauty of water exercise. It’s so versatile and can be

used for gentle exercise by doing some walking workouts waist deep in a swimming pool to take the pressure off your joints and back while still getting movement.

A dedication ceremony was held on May 31st. The event include the playing of the national anthem and a medley of patriotic songs.

A newly installed flagpole in front of the Music Pier was dedicated to

the memory of three veterans from Ocean City: Joe Caserta, James “JR” Robinson and Bill Cruice.

Family members of these men were on hand for the ceremony.

Caserta, who died earlier this year at age 98,

was a tank driver in some of the fiercest battles in Europe.

His bravery earned him the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and countless other medals and honors. Robinson received two Purple Hearts and Presidential

Unit Citation for his heroism in the Vietnam War. Cruice was a veteran of the wars in Korea and Vietnam, and a founder of the American Legion Post 524 here in Ocean City. Each was a regular attendee of the flag-raising ceremony.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to people like Joe, J.R. and Bill for their service to country and community,” Mayor Jay A. Gillian said. “I’m proud to keep this patriotic event going and looking forward to seeing everybody take a moment each morning to pay tribute to our great nation.”

The tradition of a flag-raising ceremony at the Music Pier dates back to July 4, 1940, and the event took on new meaning in the World War II years that followed before it was discontinued in 1946. In more recent years, Jim Gillian, owner of Gillian’s Island Water Park, first erected a flagpole during construction of an adjacent mini-golf course. The flag was requested by a veteran POW who ran the boardwalk every day. The flag-raising ceremony in front of the park began after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 and has been held daily every summer since then from Memorial Day to Sept. 11.

A Long Tradition at The Music Pier

A Look Back at Ocean City

ar was not far from the coast of Cape May Count y a s summer of 1940 began. Nazi troops were in Paris, and they were planning to be in

belts, and white gloves, marched up the boardwalk from their 10th Street headquarters to the new flagpole on the south side of the Music Pier.

From amplifiers atop the flagpole, the people on the boardwalk could hear Kate Smith singing “God Bless America.” As the lifeguards raised the flag, “The Star Spangled Banner” was played.

After securing the flag high above the boardwalk, the lifeguards marched back to their headquarters. The ceremony was repeated at six o’clock when the flag was lowered.

On July 4, 1940, at 9:30 a.m., dressed in their ceremonial uniforms, lifeguards raised the American flag and international signal code flags to the top of the 50-foot flagpole in front of the Music Pier.

Ocean City Beach Patrol’s captain, Jack G. Jernee, a veteran of World War I, knew the time was right for a patriotic ceremony.

He led a fundraising drive to buy a flagpole for the boardwalk. The people in Ocean City responded quickly and at nine o’clock on the morning of the Fourth of July, a color guard of ten lifeguards—Roscoe Faunce Jr., Harry Bunting III, Irving Humphrey, James Thompson, Karl Scott, Emerson Smith, Victor Bender, Walter Stickel, Monte Burhyte, and Jack Dwight—dressed in white trousers, blue blazers, white

This patriotic ceremony was held every morning and evening until Sunday, September 8. On that evening, over 2,000 spectators packed the boardwalk to watch the lifeguards lower Old Glory for the last time that summer.

This patriotic ceremony took place every day during the summer until 1946.

A dedication ceremony for a new flagpole was held on Memorial Day 2021 at 8:50 a.m. The daily flag-raising will take place every day at that time through September 11, 2021.

vored, or plain. While peanuts are known for their high protein and fat content, you may wonder whether they can help you lose weight.

Unlike other snack foods that are high in simple carbs, peanuts are rich in healthy fats, proteins, and fiber, which take longer to digest .

People that eat peanuts adding either whole peanuts or peanut butter to their breakfast led to increased fullness and more stable blood sugar levels. Finally, peanuts require more chewing, which allows you to eat your food more slowly. As a result, this gives your body time to send fullness signals that may prevent you from overeating.

Peanuts are rich in healthy fats known as monounsaturated fatty acids . (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids ( PUFAs) . A diet high in these fats has been linked to reduced rates of inflammation, obesity, and chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.

What’s more, nut consumption is associated with a lower risk of long-term weight gain. In theory high unsaturated fat content in nuts may improve the body’s ability to use stored fat as energy. Still, more research is needed.

The good news! Though peanuts are high in calories, you may not absorb all the calories they provide.

be mindful of portion sizes to prevent calories from adding up. It’s best to stick to 1–2 handfuls per serving since they’re easy to overeat.

I don’t mean to be a kill-joy. Now remember there’s good and bad to everything. Making the right choices do matter. It’s always best to select unflavored peanuts that have undergone minimal processing and don’t contain any added salt or other ingredients. Avoid candied peanuts, which contain a sugar coating and provide additional calories. For extra fiber and antioxidants, enjoy peanuts with the skins on. The extra fiber can help increase fullness.

Boiled peanuts contain fewer calories than raw or roasted peanuts, with around 116 calories per 1/4 cup (146 grams), compared with 207 and 214 calories for raw and roasted peanuts. However, boiled peanuts contain 50% less fat than raw and roasted peanuts, meaning they may not have the same filling effect.

Therefore, choose the type you like the best and always be mindful of your portion sizes .

A great tip I share with my peanut loving clients is to select shelled peanuts, as they take longer to open, which may prevent mindless eating and, ultimately, help you better manage your portion sizes and calorie intake. Though peanut butter can be a healthy option, stick with natural peanut butter that contains no added salt, processed oils, or other ingredients.

Let’s get to the bottom line. Peanuts are full of nutrition and make for a healthy snack . They’re full of fiber, protein, and healthy fats, which can aid weight management by keeping you full longer. For best results, choose raw, roasted, or boiled peanuts free of added salt and flavoring, and be mindful of your serving size.

Peanuts are an excellent alternative to other high calorie and processed snacks to help you with your weight loss goals.

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

W

e were in our late teens and the end of the school year meant it was time to secure jobs for the summer. During school, I earned extra money as a lifeguard at the local JCC, so it seemed natural to pursue a similar job since I had the experience and the qualifications. My best friend, Paul and I applied and were hired as lifeguards and “cabana boys” at the Warwick Apartments in Atlantic City. The Warwick has a large saltwater swimming pool and was flanked on three sides by cabanas.

Aside from lifeguarding, our pool area duties included checking the chlorine and ph level in the pool, vacuuming the bottom and scrubbing the pool deck. In the morning, we would open the cabanas, sweep them clean, stock them with towels and pull the chaise lounges out. We soon discovered this can be a tip producing opportunity and adjusted our behavior accordingly.

When the call went out for “POOL

BOY,” our hearing acuity depended on if the guest was a decent tipper or not.

After a while, our guests understood how things worked around the pool and the summer days rolled on profitable and blissful. We returned the next summer and reacquainted ourselves with our familiar guests but with more ambition. We requested and received permission to give swimming lessons to the guest’s grandchildren for an additional revenue stream. We also had ingratiated ourselves to some of the guests’ young teen daughters.

The summer went on, shall we say, swimmingly. We returned the next summer and after a couple weeks into the season and feeling pretty full of ourselves, we asked for a raise above the annual raise we were given. Getting some resistance, we boldly stated that if our demands were not met, we would leave, confident we had the winning hand. An important life lesson was learned in those youthful days as me, Paul and our more recent addition, Mike found ourselves out of a job with the whole summer ahead of us. I landed a job cleaning baked on cooking trays in the kitchen of Woolworth’s on the Atlantic City boardwalk. I only

put up with that for a few days. Then, I drove a delivery truck for a restaurant supply company. There I learned another valuable lesson, this one on physics. When a movable object collides with a stationary object… well, I did some extensive body work on the truck. The truck was returned and I never showed up to work again. Paul was left slicing pickles at the Gem restaurant in Atlantic City and Mike was delivering produce.

Not the summer we were looking forward to. The Plaza Apartments on Plaza Place in Atlantic City was looking for lifeguards and cabana boys and I was hired. I brought Paul and Mike aboard and the band was back together. We started up our swimming lessons, added diving lessons and dated granddaughters. The gin rummy players were supplied with cold water, warm towels and clean ash trays for their cigars all day. Rainy days were an occasional respite from the usual duties with us huddled in our

cabana playing guitars, eating subs or pizza and retelling summer stories.

Eventually, summer jobs gave way to permanent jobs but the summer stories have survived and continue to be shared with grown children and grand children. Now, when I ride my bike on the boardwalk and pass these high rises, I sometimes steal a glance over the fence and see the young pool boys supplying their trade.

I wonder if they are going to be retelling stories about their summer job at the shore fifty years from now. I do hope so.

What’s Causing that “Tingling Feeling?”

Pins and needles, mild tingling or your hand feels like it “fell asleep” can happen occasionally to anyone.

But when the tingling becomes more frequent or it does not resolve itself, it could be a signal that something more serious is going on and it is time to speak with a physician. I sat down with Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Jasmine Bauknight of Shore Physicians Group in Somers Point who specializes in hand and upper extremity procedures to share some insight into what’s causing this “tingling” feeling.

“T

here are a number of reasons a person would have numbness in their hand and fingers,” said Dr. Bauknight. “It could be something as simple as

sleeping in a position where it puts pressure on a nerve. The temporary reduction of blood to the nerve may cause that pins and needles feeling.

Many people unknowingly sleep with their wrists or elbows bent and that puts additional tension on the nerve.

The numbness in the hand or wrist could also be caused by many other reasons including pressure on the median nerve or carpal tunnel syndrome.”

Other than carpal tunnel syndrome, Dr. Bauknight said some of the other reasons a person may experience numbness or pins and needles in their hands and wrists could be due to cubital tunnel syndrome, cervical spondylosis, thoracic outlet syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, diabetes, as well as sleep posture.

As Dr. Bauknight explained, the hand is very complicated, and broken bones, injured ligaments, and pinched nerves can happen anywhere. The kitchen is a prime spot for hand accidents, and cuts that occur in a split second can damage nerves, tendons and ligaments and may require multiple stitches and possibly even surgery.

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME Numbness and tingling in the hand and arm may result from a compressed nerve in the wrist, according to Dr. Bauknight. “Carpal tunnel syndrome is actually a compression neuropathy, where the median nerve is basically getting squeezed under ligaments and tendons as they pass through the carpal tunnel. The nerve does not like to be compressed and may result in tingling, that numb pins and needle feeling. It may also cause weakness in the hand or diminished grip strength and even dropping things, depending upon the severity of the compression.” Dr. Bauknight added that wrist anatomy along with patterns of hand use may contribute to the severity of the individual’s carpal tunnel syndrome.

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME TREATMENT Treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome may include rest, ice, wrist splints or braces, exercises, cortisone injections and surgery if necessary. Dr. Bauknight said, left untreated, carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to weakness, a lack of coordination in the fingers and thumb and may impact the individual’s ability to grip as well as their range of motion. Dr. Bauknight cautioned that people suffering with symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome should not put off seeing their physicians because the symptoms can get worse. They may result in irreversible changes such as weakness and muscle-wasting and in some cases, Dr. Bauknight said the beefy part of the palm can flatten out.

If surgery is necessary, Dr. Bauknight indicated there are two different techniques: open carpal tunnel release or endoscopic. The open carpal tunnel release involves an incision in the wrist. The ligament is cut to allow the release. The endoscopic technique is a done with a small incision in the wrist and using a tiny camera-guided instrument, the surgeon releases the ligament. The more rapid recovery is via the endoscopic procedure but both have a

good outcome for the patient. They will need to follow with therapy post-surgery.

AVOCADO HAND Dr. Bauknight warned that something as simple as making a bowl of guacamole can turn into a trip to the emergency room and possibly require surgery from one quick cooking shortcut. Avocados are a big part of many meals but a sharp knife can easily go right through that leathery and slippery avocado skin and into the hand holding it, Dr. Bauknight said. She adds that cooks will too often try to quickly remove the pit by smacking it with a sharp knife in an attempt to yank it free from the fruit. “The hand is so complex and compact. A sharp knife can go right through the skin and cut nerves and tendons. Stitches to repair the damage is only part of the problem. I can make the repair but there will need to be weeks of physical and occupational therapy for them to regain their full range of motion.”

HERO Campaign Adds Three New Vehicles to its Squad

n Thursday, the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign unveiled three new police cruisers in a ceremony held outside of Longport’s Borough Hall. The new cruisers from Longport, Pleasantville and Vineland join a fleet of seven other vehicles from neighboring communities, including Ocean City, Atlantic City, Linwood, Sea Isle City, Middle Township, Lower Township and Evesham. The new members of its fleet will be used to promote the HERO Campaign’s message that designated drivers save lives.

The new HERO cars were presented as a kickoff to the campaign’s “Summer of HEROS” initiative reminding motorists to have a safe ride home whenever they consume alcoholic beverages. Every vehicle is brandished with the HERO slogan “Be a HERO. Be a Designated Driver.”

With a busy summer season ahead, towns such as Longport will be using the vehicle as an educational and functional tool throughout the

Balance and Grace Mom's Vibe

alancing everything that comes with being a mother is the challenge of a lifetime.

Whether you stay at home with your kids, work full time outside of the home, or some version of in between, balancing it all can often prove to be incredibly difficult. Every time we seem to get into a groove, the seasons change and we have to readjust.

When the going gets tough and you feel overwhelmed, consider these 5 questions to bring you back to the center.

What can I outsource?

I know it feels like you have to do it all but the pressure to do everything, for everyone, all of the time is outdated. As moms, we are doing more in a day than ever imaginable. If nobody has granted you this permission yet, here it is! Outsource. We can only do so much in a day and if we keep trying to do it all, we will experience the inevitable burnout. There is so

much rest available to us when we ask for help. With resources like grocery delivery or pickup, care.com, and angieslist.com, there are helping hands readily available. We just need to drop our pride enough to ask for the help we need. Ask yourself, “who can help me with this so my time can be used most effectively?”

What can wait?

Everything feels urgent when the to-do list is piling up. However, if you take a step back and really ask the question, “what can wait?” you will often find that it’s not as urgent as it seems. When life seems to be piling up, slow down and focus on the most urgent and important first.

The four quadrants of time management are a great way to organize your thoughts and time. Whether you use it for business, parenting, life, or a hybrid of it all, it’s a helpful tool.

Make a full list of everything that requires your attention, then separate the items into Quadrant 1 through 4 (reference image).

If you are not quite ready to create the full quadrant, simply stop to ask yourself throughout the day: ● Is this urgent? ● Is this important? ● Can it wait?

What can I let go of?

What things in your life simply are not serving you anymore? Are there things in your life that are only taking up empty space but adding to the overwhelm? Not everything is meant to serve your greater purpose every season of life. Some things may need to be snipped out, cut off, let loose. Take a minute to ask yourself what feels unnecessary right now. It is liberating to free yourself of things that no longer serve you.

How can I communicate better?

So many of us just plow through each day trying to check off the todo list, never slowing down enough to communicate with our partners, family, or children. It leads to guilt and shame, feeling like we are dropping at least one of the balls. Not to mention, if we are not asking for help, it is likely that the people around us think we have it all figured out. The willingness to ask for help or communicate our needs is something that many of us need to put into practice. Free flowing communication can change the game altogether for busy moms.

Where can I show more grace?

Take the pressure off. Look around and ask yourself where you could show yourself a little more grace. Take a deep breath and know that you are doing the absolute best you can. We walk around with our Supermom capes without question day after day. Then when it gets to be too much, so many of us are quick to feel guilty for not handling it all more efficiently. This is your invitation to find a space in your life that you need to be more gentle with yourself in. You are still a supermom!

As the seasons change, just remember that we have been called to this role. These children were chosen for us to love, to raise, and to empower. We are exactly where we need to be, even when it feels impossible. You are allowed to ask for help, to slow down, to seek ease.

Mythbusters: Wine Edition Wine Time

ine is a complex beast.

Most of us begin our journey with a single curious sip. Then, we may begin reaching out for more information to feed our curiosity – chatting with others, doing some Google searches, or picking up a book. But with so much information available, its hard to know what to believe. As a result, falsehoods persist, all of them eventually corroding your ability to properly experience your wine. Here are the top 3 myths holding people back from true wine-sipping bliss, debunked. ● “Wines with screw caps are subpar”. Look, I love the sound of a cork popping as much as the next guy. But times, they are a-changing, and with winemakers being as much scientists as they are artists, they can’t ignore the evidence against corks. Wines become “corked” when they come in con-

tact with a compound called TCA, found in the bark of the trees used to make cork. You may have experienced this if you’ve ever opened a wine to the smell of moldy cardboard or wet newspaper. 3-6% of wines become the victim of cork taint, and the way many winemakers see it, it simply isn’t worth the loss. Besides, cork requires the use of trees, and they aren’t recycled.

The earth and wine both benefit from screw caps, and you can, too! If you don’t believe it, try Blue Quail Sauvignon Blanc ($13.99) or Montinore Pinot Noir ($19.99).

“Wines are better with age”.

This is only very rarely true. The majority of wines in an average price range (< $30) are made to be drank NOW. Winemakers know that most bottles purchased are poured within a day or two, and so they make sure they’re already at their best before even releasing them from the cellar. In most cases, all necessary aging has already been done on the estate. Aging a wine softens its acid and dulls its tannins. If the wine is low in one or both of those components to begin with, then aging them away will only lead to a floppy, unstruc-

tured, and foul-tasting wine. With a few exceptions, red wines are much more likely to be age-worthy. If in doubt, ask your local wine clerk or visit the winery’s website.

“For a great wine, you need to spend a lot of money”. Thankfully, you don’t! I can’t reinforce enough that you can find a wine worth loving at ANY price. The idea that throwing 50 or 100 dollars at a bottle is the only way to taste something fantastic is a very classist one; it serves only to gatekeep the magic that wine has to offer.

Plenty of regions make wines inexpensively enough with the tools and climate available to them that they don’t need to charge us a

fortune for the finished product.

Argentina is one of many great examples – with their desert climate keeping pests at bay and the natural irrigation provided by the Andes mountains, they’re able to make incredible low-cost wines.

Catmint, the Cat’s Meow in the Garden Let It Grow

aming a favorite plant in the garden is like picking a favorite child. You truly love them all and would never choose one over the other, but some do fall into your favor at different times for various reasons.

That being said, catmint has so many endearing qualities, that it’s definitely a contender for top ten of favorite flowers in my garden.

Though catmint (Nepeta faassenii) is often confused with catnip (Nepeta cataria), they have slightly different traits, but are closely related. Often their names are used interchangeably. Most people are familiar with the euphoric effect that catnip can have on kitty cats. But only about 2/3 of house cats are affected by catnip.

n today’s seller’s market, you may have tried your hand at selling your home yourself, reasoning that with low inventory and high demand there would be a line of sellers waiting for the chance to make an offer. Now you may be watching other homes sell in hours at far above the asking price while your home continues to languish during a historically hot market.

According to the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) most recent statistics, approximately 8 percent of home sales are For Sale By Owner (FSBO) transactions. What makes the difference between a successful By Owner home sale and a long and frustrating one? Here are the things to consider when determining whether it’s time to give up your FSBO experiment and bring in a real estate agent to sell your home.

When you don’t have a buyer in mind According to NAR, 39 percent of successful For Sale By Owner transactions occurred when the buyer and seller already had an agreement in place. Sometimes this was due to a homeowner selling directly to a friend or family member. Other times the successful sale occurred when a buyer approached the seller directly with an offer.

If you don’t have someone in place already, you may face a long and difficult search for a qualified buyer. You’ll need to get up to speed on market-ready pricing, publicity, and promotions—skills a trusted real estate agent is well-qualified to provide on day one.

s I write this on Memorial Day Monday 2021, I can’t help but think about the quote I keep seeing about the holiday. “All gave some….some gave ALL!” I’ve also seen a lot of posts on social media where folks are saying you’re not supposed to wish anyone a “happy”

Memorial Day, which makes sense. My cousin Mike passed away in 2010 while serving our country in the Army in Iraq.

He’s buried in Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery and I do hope that folks remember Mike and all the other dedicated men & women who have served in the armed forces so that we may enjoy the freedoms we have!

On that note, I recently contacted a friend of mine, Marco Polo Smigliani.

He’s a Vietnam veteran and earned the Purple Heart award four times for his service & valor. In addition to remembering the fallen, how about we honor some of the living too? To that end, Marco told me about a fund-raising initiative that’s near & dear to his heart.

It’s the Bernie Friedenberg World War II Memorial.

Friedenberg grew up in Atlantic City and attempted to enlist in the military services (Marines, Navy, and Army) but was rejected by all three services due to poor vision. Undeterred, Friedenberg persisted, and he was eventually inducted into the Army as a non-combatant. Friedenberg received training as a Medic; attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, and was assigned to the Medical Detachment, 1st Battalion, 16th Regimenta, 1st U.S. Infantry Division.

All Friedenberg did then was go on

According to Marco Polo, they’re looking to raise funds to get this memorial built. COVID-19 had an impact on their ability to fund-raise, and they’re doing this without government help. ↘Continued from 37 goes down with significant injury. The Flyers are hoping that history repeats itself for the NHL draft lottery. Speaking of history, a 46-year-old makes history at The Brickyard as he wins the Indy 500 for the fourth time. On the local front, a St. Joe grad and Little Egg Harbor native makes his MMA debut and wins! Plus, two former Phillies managers stop by Ocean City to talk to the high school baseball team.

From entertainment, I finally got time to watch the “Friends” reunion on HBO Max. Plus, we sadly, say goodbye to a longtime TV icon, who certainly made an impact on my childhood…!!! As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● We’ll start with the Sixers for the third column in a row as they were hoping for a series sweep against Washington, but a few things went wrong on the way to that outcome.

First, Joel Embiid left Game 4 with right knee soreness after the 1st quarter and missed the rest of the game. With Embiid out, the Sixers battled valiantly and even had it tied at 108-108 with just over three minutes to play, but then Wizards Head Coach Scott Brooks went to a “Hack-a-Ben” strategy and they lost 122-114. ● That sets up a Game #5 situation in front of a now “full-capacity” Wells

Fargo Center, and it should be a real thriller. More on that in my next column, but first, I can write more about the “Hack-a-Ben” strategy.

Are you old enough to remember when NBA teams would employ that against Shaquille O’Neal…? O’Neal was so bad at shooting free throws, opposing coaches would purposely foul him at the end of games as a strategy. Simmons hadn’t made a free throw prior to Game 4, and Scott Brooks directed his players to foul Simmons to increase his odds.

Simmons finishes 5 for 11 from the free throw line, and the Sixers lost by eight. So, you can’t say if he made them all, they automatically would’ve won, but it does make you think!

No matter what, the big concern is about Embiid, and maybe by the time you read this, all will be okay, but when the big man is out of the lineup, it really changes things for the Sixers both on the offensive side of the ball, and definitely on the defensive side of things too.

Moving on to the Eagles now, as reports are swirling that they might be a candidate for Julio Jones, the allstar wide receiver who wants OUT of Atlanta. Of course, more recent reports have the Seattle Seahawks showing interest as well, but if I’ve learned anything about Eagles GM Howie Roseman in his second go-

round, it’s that he LOVES to make the BIG deal.

The Eagles are set up to potentially have THREE first-round picks in next year’s NFL draft. Their own, one from Miami and the one from Indianapolis for Carson Wentz.

The first two look like they will be top-20 picks, but that Colts one is a conditional first-round pick if Carson Wentz plays 75% of the snaps or plays 70% of the snaps in 2021 and the Colts make the playoffs. I would definitely be okay giving up THAT pick to get a seven-time Pro Bowler who has led the NFL in receiving yards twice in his career.

Just think about that. How unbelievable would that be to have both the Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith and Julio Jones on the Eagles at the same time? How awesome could that be?

Now, as I write this, other teams are in the mix too. Nothing should happen until after June 1st when NFL teams can spread out salary cap hits over two years instead of taking it all in the current year for players who are released or traded.

Which leads me to Zack Ertz. Some folks have asked why he hasn’t been moved or traded yet. Well, June 1st has a lot to do with that. Earlier this offseason, the Eagles designated wide receiver Alshon Jeffery and defensive tackle Malik Jackson as post-June 1 cuts. There’s a lengthy explanation of what that means, but all you really need to know is that doing it that way means that on June 2nd, the team’s cap space will more than double, with $4 million added from the Jeffery-Jackson moves.

This means the Birds can sign their draft class with plenty of room to spare. It might even mean they can sign a free-agent cornerback to start opposite Darius Slay, though that might take a little more cap maneuvering, such as a trade or release of disaffected tight end Zach Ertz. June 1st comes into play with Ertz as well; trading or releasing him after that date increases the 2021 cap savings from a little less than $5 million to $8.5 million. Perhaps by my next column, I’ll have some clarity as to what’s going on with Ertz.

In baseball, the Phillies have been moving in the WRONG direction as far as the standings go. 3-8 over their last eleven games, and four and a half games back from the firstplace Mets as I write this column.

They finished the month of May with a 25-29 record, and an 11-1 drubbing at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds in Ohio. So, what’s their biggest problem? Well, simply put, this team can’t hit! In the loss to the Reds, they went 0-9 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.

Even when they get a good starting effort, like when Zack Wheeler struck out a career-high 14 the other day in Tampa, the Phillies still found a way to blow it and lose 5-3 to the Rays. Sure, the Rays are in first place in the A.L. East, but boy if you strike out 14, you should win, right?

The Phillies lost more than just the ballgame last week in Tampa as well, when outfielder Roman Quinn went down scoring on a Ronald Torreyes two-run double. This was really a shame to see, as Quinn suffers a left Achilles tendon injury and is now done for the season. In fact, Quinn’s career as a Phillie might be over as the oft-injured speedster just can’t stay healthy! You hate to see this.

After losing that quick two-game series in Tampa, the Phillies have now gone 6-16 against Miami and Tampa Bay the last two seasons despite the fact that both teams have payrolls in the bottom five of baseball. Do you think that has Phillies managing partner John Middleton pulling out his hair right now?

And then there’s hockey…where the Flyers are hoping that history repeats itself with the NHL Draft lottery. Well, kind of repeats itself.

Four years ago, luck was with the Flyers when they moved from No. 13 to No. 2 in the draft lottery. They are hoping for a similar script when the draft lottery is held on Wednesday June 2nd from the NHL Network’s studio in Secaucus, N.J. However, I say “kind of” because back in 2017, the Flyers had just a little over a 2% chance to land the No. 1 or No. 2 overall pick in the lottery.

They beat those odds, received the No. 2 pick, and selected center Nolan Patrick. I’m sure Nolan Patrick is a GREAT guy, but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy and definitely has not lived up to a #2 overall pick projection. So, here’s hoping they move up again, but get a “can’t miss” kind of player! Is that too much to ask for?

From auto racing, congrats to 46-year-old Helio Castroneves as he wins the Indy 500 for the 4th time. Castroneves joins racing legends A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr., and Rick Mears as the only four-time winners in the 104-year history of the race.

On the local front, a huge congratulations to Little Egg Harbor native and St. Joe grad C.J. LaFragola, who made his MMA pro debut a good one last week in Philadelphia.

LaFragola, who played football and wrestled at St. Joseph High School in Hammonton, and then went on to wrestle in the Ivy League at Brown University, won a unanimous decision over Geoff Magin at the Cage Fury Fighting Championships 96 card at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia. The card was a mix of amateur and professional fights. Plus, Magin entered the fight 2-0, but LaFragola won each of the three rounds 10-9 from all three judges. Way to go CJ and best of luck moving forward!

My last item is from the local sports scene involves baseball as two Phillies legends stopped by to offer some advice and stories at Ocean City baseball the other week. Former Phillies manager Charlie Manuel and former Phillies manager & player Larry Bowa paid a visit to the OC baseball field at 5th and Bay Avenue.

I learned about this after the fact on Twitter, but I’m betting my friend Frank Coppenbarger had something to do with this, as he is the former Phillies Clubhouse Manager. Coppenbarger now lives in Ocean City and helps out with Andrew Bristol’s program. What a treat it must have been for the Red Raiders to hear about hitting from Manuel and about heart & hustle from Bowa. I will always have a special place in my heart for the late Dallas Green for bringing the Phillies their first World Championship in 1980, but there’s no doubt that both Bowa & Manuel are two of my other favorite Phillies legends for sure!

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I made sure to catch the “Friends” reunion on HBO Max. Officially titled, "Friends: The Reunion", and also known as "The One Where They Get Back Together", it basically had everything I wanted in a reunion special. I learned a few things I didn’t know about the

popular series before. I loved seeing all the actors together again, (I felt the girls have aged better than the boys) and enjoyed most of the cameos. It’s always surprising to me when someone says “oh, I didn’t like Friends”, or “I’ve never seen it”. My current students that I teach are 14to-18 years old, so I can understand why they might not have seen it, but there’s a reason that Friends was so popular from 1994-2004!

And, since I’m talking about TV, I’ll give a “tip of the cap” to Gavin MacLeod, who passed away at the age of 90 last Saturday. Best known for his work on “The Mary Tyler Moore

Show” and later, “The Love Boat”, he will forever be Captain Merrill Stubing to me. He was Murray Slaughter on Mary Tyler Moore and Merrill Stubing on Love Boat, but farewell to a great actor. I sure loved watching “The Love Boat” when I was a kid!

One last thought, and that’s a reminder for you to check with local establishments and folks about mask on or masks off. A lot of places have moved to a “no mask” policy, but always be sure to be courteous and check what the rules & protocols each place (or person) has. I truly feel we are going to have a GREAT summer. Let’s not mess it up now!

A new survey commissioned by The Genius of Play and conducted by OnePoll finds that 89% of adults have learned to appreciate the importance of play and leisure time over the past year. What’s more, 84% say taking time to play helps them be more productive at work.

“You’re never too young or too old to play,” says Anna Yudina, senior director of marketing initiatives at The Toy Association, which spearheads The Genius of Play. “In fact, research links play with a number of wellness benefits in adults, such as reducing stress, boosting life satisfaction, and empowering people to be creative, flexible thinkers.”

To incorporate play into your life, consider these tips from The Genius of Play: ● Take on a Hobby: Seventy percent of adults picked up a new hobby or leisure activity over the past year -- and with good reason. Hobbies can be a source of positive emotions, get you outdoors, encourage physical activity and social interactions, and spark creativity. From roller skating to dancing to crafting to playing an instrument, consider taking on a new, playful hobby or revisiting one you enjoyed during childhood. ● Plan a Game Night: While play often occurs spur-of-the-moment, life is hectic and schedules are jampacked. Consider scheduling time for fun to ensure it happens. For example, make one evening each week a totally screen-free, stress-

free experience. Order pizza (or your household’s cuisine of choice) and break out games and puzzles.

What do I need a death certificate for? (Part 2)

e have all heard the famous quote by Benjamin Franklin “In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.” That kind of ties into needing a death certificate. In most cases, one final year of tax returns will need to be filed after a person dies. Along with the deceased’s final federal, state, and local tax returns, you’ll want to submit a certified copy of the death certificate for their records. The certificate verifies there will be no further tax returns for the individual.

Death certificates are definitely needed in regards to transferring titles between owners. If the ownership of an asset like a house or car is changing hands after a death, you will need to transfer the title, which shows ownership.

If the individual who passed away was

retired, they may have had numerous retirement income resources. The most common is social security. In many cases, (but not all, in New Jersey social security is automatically notified electronically when the death certificate is filed) the funeral director will fill out a form to report the death to the Social Security Administration. I would like to mention that there is a $255.00 death benefit for a surviving spouse from social security. This is a one-time pay out to the surviving spouse only, meaning that when the other spouse passes there is no payment to the next of kin unless the widowed spouse remarries.

The $255.00 is actually a hold-over from the new deal started by President Roosevelt to help people suffering during the great depression. Back in the 1930’s, that $255.00 was enough to bury you. The government has never increased the benefit nor do law makers want to take an entitlement away from their constituents, so it stayed on the books and continues to be paid out.
