P

olice in New York City have responded to the lower west end of Manhattan after an incident involving a vehicle, which may be linked to a terrorist act, left at least 8 people dead and multiple others injured. A witness described the chaotic scene to ABC's New York station WABC, saying that after the truck hit multiple people on the bike path, it crashed into a school bus at Chambers and West streets, near Stuyvesant High School. The incident happened in the Manhattan neighborhood of Tribeca near

the World Trade Center just after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday. The truck used in the deadly rampage was a rental from Home Depot. Matt Harrigan, spokesman for Home Depot, confi ms one of their rental trucks was part of an incident in lower Manhattan. Law enforcement sources identifie the suspect to CBS News as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, a 29-year-old man from Tampa, Florida. He came to the U.S. in 2010 from Uzbekistan. He said they are “cooperating with authorities” in their investigation. Harrigan deferred further questions to authorities. According to a CNN report, the

suspect hit a school bus and wrecked his truck. Four people were removed from the bus and they had minor injuries, the police official aid.

"He was on his knees and had his hands on his head and right next to him was the white pickup truck. It had Home Depot logos on it. The front was entirely smashed in and it had smoke coming out of it." CNN further reported that the driver then exited the vehicle displaying

imitation firearms and was shot by police, according to the NYPD. The individual is in police custody and is being taken to the hospital for treatment, sources at the NYPD said. Separately, four law enforcement sources said witnesses reported the suspect was yelling ‘Allahu Akbar.’ Official say the incident is being investigated as a terrorist incident. A large number of police vehicles could be seen in Manhattan near West Street and Chambers Street, which is near a community college and a high school and a few blocks north of the National Sept. 11 Memorial. Mayor Bill de Blasio's offic says the mayor is currently en route to the

scene. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is also responding to the scene. Based on the current information, "this was an act of terror," Mayor Bill de Blasio said, adding that it was a "cowardly" act. This is a "very painful day in our city," Mayor de Blasio said. One law enforcement source told CNN that the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force is taking over the lead of the investigation. News footage showed crowds of spectators — some capturing the scene with cellphone cameras — gathered behind police lines.
