Kim Y. Royster - First Female of Color Assistant Chief of the NYPD

n a historic move, earlier this week, Commissioner William J. Bratton announced the promotion of Kim Y. Royster to the position of Assistant Chief.

Royster was the third female of color to be promoted to Deputy Chief and now she is the first ever to be promoted to Assistant Chief in the history of the NYPD. The announcement was made in a meeting which included members of the New York Black Publishers, Inc. and other African, African-American and Caribbean publishers.

Assistant Chief Kim Y Royster, a Brooklyn native, began her career with the New York City Police Department in January l985 as a Police Administrative Aide. She was sworn in as a Police Officer in July l987, and was assigned to the 13th Precinct. She was promoted to Detective in December 2001; Lieutenant in April 2002; and Captain August 2006; Deputy Inspector in August of 2009; Inspector in March 2012 ; and Deputy Chief in October 2013. Royster has served in the

Police Academy, the 5 and 13 Precincts, the 7 Precinct Detective Squad, Patrol Borough Manhattan South, the Office of Management Analysis and Planning (OMAP, Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI), Detective Borough Manhattan, Detective Borough Brooklyn, the Intelligence Division, the Internal Affairs Bureau and the Criminal Justice Bureau.

Assistant Chief Royster most recently served as the Commanding Officer of

the Public Information Division.. While assigned to DCPI, the office received a Unit Citation for outstanding performance in 2011 for the coordination of media coverage/request of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 and the President’s historic visit to the 1st Precinct and Ground Zero.

Also during her tenure at DCPI, the Department developed official social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,YouTube and the NYPD iphone application,.

Election Day Thursday September 10th

ext week Thursday September 10th there is a very important election that most people are completely unaware of. Most people are focusing in on next years Presidential race because of the national media attention generated

by Hillary & Donald et al. But it’s the local elections that matter most and have the most immediate impact on you.

The lack of awareness is worsened because election day happens during the Labor Day holiday week, which is also back to school week,

so the election is on a Thursday and not on Tuesday as most people are used to.

he New York Office of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, hosted its fourth annual “A Mind Is...” Hamptons Summer Benefit on Saturday, August 22, 2015 in Easthampton, New York at the lovely home of Nancy Silberkleit who co-chaired the event with UNCF president & CEO Dr. Michael L. Lomax.

Robert Johnson, Playing By His Own Rules BET Founder Pushes Black Hiring, Launches New Network

His RLJ Rule has grabbed the attention of some executives at Fortune 500 companies after already being endorsed by President Barack Obama and by members of the United States Senate who, led by Republican Tim Scott, recently passed a resolution establishing business best practices to fully utilize the potential of the country based on the RLJ Rule.

“It’s a way to break up the old boys system, the mindset,” said Johnson, 69.

“Hiring is a process busy people do when they have to fill a position. It’s a natural kind of behavior when a position is open to

see who they went to school with, who they play golf with and the next thing you know, African-Americans are left out.”

That’s exactly what Johnson proposes to change with the RLJ Rule, which encourages companies to voluntarily implement a plan to interview a minimum of two qualified minority candidates for every job opening at the vice president level and above.

Johnson also wants companies to interview at least two qualified minority-owned firms for vendor and supplier services contracts before awarding a new company contract to a

vendor.

He said the decision

by Xerox this month to implement their version of the RLJ Rule will hopefully motivate other Fortune 500 companies to recognize the compelling need to encourage minority and ethnic diversity in hiring at every level and to encourage procurement opportunities for qualified minority businesses.

“We are not telling people that they have to hire African-Americans; what we want is for them to be given an opportunity,” Johnson said, noting that the approach has worked well for him.

“Tom Baltimore, who is responsible for all of the activities of my RLJ Development, was working at Hilton Hotels, and he wasn’t in line to be a CEO. I gave him a chance and now he’s a CEO,” Johnson said.

“The point is to make certain that minorities are given an opportunity to compete as equals and contribute with their talents to the growth of the economy both nationally and on a global scale. Also, once you bring them in for an interview, it may be that they don’t get that job, but when something else comes

up, they are in your database and you know them.”

Naturally, Johnson said he’s not trying to bully anyone into adopting the rule or mandating that they hire minorities.

“The RLJ Rule is principally designed to encourage companies to voluntarily establish a best practices policy to identify and interview the tremendous talent pool of minority individuals and businesses that are often overlooked because of traditional hiring or procurement practices,” he said.

n Monday, August 17, 2015 Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, a unit of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, hosted a Holiday Breakfast at the new Quinn Hotel’s exquisite Mayfarer Lounge on West 57th Street, NYC coordinated by Sonya Y. Ede-Williams, director, publicity, World Wide Marketing Communications, who flew in from LA with a team of publicists to promote the company’s upcoming TV shows and digital HD releases. aima Williams of Angel Harlem was crowned Best Uptown Bartender at the sold out event held at MIST Harlem on Wednesday, August 26th. Naima, who was also crowned Best Uptown Bartender in 2013, entered the Showdown Finale with the second highest number of Instagram votes/likes and second highest Judge’s Choice score for her cocktails during the voting/sampling phase of the competition. Approximately 5,000 votes were received in total during the voting period.

Naima competed against 10 other bartenders at the Showdown Finale from Harlem and Washington Heights/ Inwood in front of a crowd of

350 supporters. Judges included: Hennessy Celebrity Mixologist, Joseph Solis; Hendrick’s Gin Global Brand Ambassador, Jim Ryan; UPTOWN Magazine Contributing Writer, Derrick Hemphill; and Bravo TV’s Blood, Sweat and Heels, Mica Hughes.

Round 1 of the competition required that each bartender prepare 300 1 oz

Harlem honoree Vet Center, Team Leader Walter Bridgers, said, “Military

people are mission oriented and never get rid of a mission, you just find different ways to complete the mission.”

For Bridgers, 65, working to assist fellow veterans who are making the adjustment back to civilian life after a career in the armed forces provides just that sense of mission. The Harlem Vet Center provides veterans and their families with outreach, counseling and referral services, including assistance in finding housing, medical referrals and counseling marriage conflict and sexual trauma. Bridgers believes education is the key to allowing veterans to make the

Set Children on the Right Path for Life

O

n the morning of September 9, 2015, the ground will almost shake as more than a million children in our city set off for the first day of the new school year.

As a podiatrist, my attention is on their feet.

Little feet need care and awareness from parents if the little feet are to grow

into the big, healthy feet that will help children play sports, dance and be at their best.

Children are constantly growing and changing and their feet are no exception.

Many parents will buy new shoes or sneakers for their children for the new school year. That’s great, but please don’t assume that you know your children’s sizes; have the store measure their feet every time, even if you bought new shoes for them relatively recently. While sneakers are fine footwear, have your children switch off to a more supportive leather shoe occasionally.

And no matter the shoe,

make sure your children always wear socks, and that those socks are cotton or mostly cotton so the feet can breathe.

You should examine

children’s feet periodically; they are prone to a variety of problems. This is what you’re looking for: Walking – watch for walking on toes, or an un-

even gait.

Toenails – look for ingrown toenails, or nails that appear to be infected.

Athlete’s foot – check between toes. Look for

cracks, scaling, or persistent redness.

Warts – these are really common on children’s feet and often appear in September and October.

General – look for callouses or corns.

Listen – is your child complaining about pain in the foot, heel or ankle?

Please take your child to a podiatrist trained in the pediatric foot if you find any of the above. You’ll be setting your child’s feet on the right path for life!

ow that you’re enjoying the last few weeks of summer, you and your family might want to start preparing for the upcoming school year. Here is a checklist you can use to help you get ready for back-toschool season: 1. Make sure your child gets an annual school physical, and confirm with the doctor that your child has received the recommended vaccinations. This well-child visit is the perfect time to address important health issues that may impact your child’s school year, including clearance for sports participation

and age-appropriate vaccines.

2. Have your child’s eyesight checked at the start of each new school year. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends an eye evaluation once before the age of 3 and every one to two years after that until age 19. During adolescence, a child’s eyesight can change very quickly.

3. Schedule one of your child’s biannual dental checkups. Children should see a dentist by age 1. Even preschool-age kids can learn oral health habits, including the proper way to brush using training toothpaste and visits to a dentist twice a year. Tooth decay can be a chronic childhood disease. If untreated, it

4. Start thinking about healthy breakfast and lunch options. Eating breakfast is the best way to get your child’s brain ready to learn. Wholegrain cereal, whole-wheat toast and fresh fruits are quick options that will do the job.

If your child packs lunch, be sure to include foods that are both tasty and healthy. Healthy lunch options include: • Lean meat sandwiches on wheat bread • Low-fat milk • Fun finger foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables • Crackers and cheese in snacksize portions Avoid carbonated beverag-

es, high-calorie juice drinks, high-fat sweets and heavily processed snack foods such as chips and cereal bars.

5. Set your child’s school bedtime schedule. Children between 5 and 12 years old need approximately 10 to 12 hours of sleep per night. Children older than 12 years of age should get at least eight hours of sleep. Start the school year with a bedtime routine that

includes preparing for the morning, for example, setting out clothes and packing lunch.

Also, encourage children to wake up early enough to have time for breakfast.

Choice

H

ow many times have you said that you have to do something?

The fact is there is always a choice. J. Martin Kohe wrote a book about choice title “Your Greatest Power”. Personal development expert Bob Proctor considers your ability to choose is what separates you from the rest of the animal kingdom. Fear and doubt are the main reasons why we feel that we have no choice in a situation, but you always have

a choice. We fear the unknown and social programing will create illusionary visions of consequences that often force you into choosing to do something that you don’t want to do.

In his book “The ABCs of Success” Bob Proctor writes that “life is too short to be spent doing something or going somewhere you have not chosen to do or go. Proctor goes on to say that “no” can be a complete sentence.

Don’t blame others for making you do something that you don’t want to do. The choice is always yours and if you are currently do-

ing something that you don’t want to do; it is because you choose to.

Never let others take your power away it is always your choice to do something. You might not want to do something and choose to do it because of the fear of consequences if you do not; but it is always your choice.

Fear and doubt will always keep you from reaching your true potential if you allow them to. As stated before most of our fears are illusionary. We all are programed into believing in illusionary limitations. The power that comes from understanding that

we are who we think we are should be taken seriously. Thought manifestation is real.

If you are not satisfied with who or where you are today; choose to change the way you think and tomorrow can be different.

I believe that most bad choices come from allowing the influence of external people, places and things to overcome internal intuitive thought. Nothing outside of you can truly make you happy.

The thoughts that you attach to anything outside of self is at best illusionary due to social programing. Nothing in the material world is

as good or as bad as it is in your mind. Think about something you wanted very badly, and then think about your thoughts after you got it.

We can always do more than we feel that we can, if we choose to change the way we think. We can manifest material reality if we have faith that we can.

We can choose to accept our current conditions or we can choose not to; the power to choose is truly a wonderful ability that no one can take away unless you choose to let them.

ast week’s article suggested the alterative herb “elderflowers” because it induces perspiration when treating colds and the flu. It is also used for swollen sinuses, bronchitis, diabetes and constipation.

You can make a tea with ½ ounce gentian root, one ounce verbena and sorrel. One of my alltime favorite formulas is my Yang Flower Remedy: elderflowers, yarrow flowers and peppermint leaves.

Make a tea with equal parts of each herb: add 2-3 teaspoons of the formula in 2-3 cups of boiling wa-

ter. Remove from flame, cover and let steep for 2030 minutes.

Chipping Away

R

ight now, I am listening to the sound of jackhammers chipping away at the street below my window. The massive instruments are sending their vibrations up the outside walls and I can feel the floor inside the apartment trembling. As annoying and nerve-racking the non stop vibrations are, thank goodness it’s only temporary, which leads me to the “stuff” for this week. Why is it that just when you think that you have everything under control, things are going great and life is good; when seemingly overnight something happens to chip away at your comfort zone?

Say that you are about to lose your job, health, wealth and/or general sense of well-being. Some of these events will have a lasting effect, others a temporary effect on you and your family. Maybe the events are beyond your control and others occurred because you (oops!) . . . missed your cue! Regardless, changes in your life can, at times, be unsettling and throw you off balance. How do you cope?

Now back to that jackhammer . . . . . you don’t have to be the operator to know that the machine jars your body when it is running. The operator (life)

holds steady, with both feet planted firmly on the ground focused on the task at hand. His efforts cause partial destruction of the

targeted area (life shaking things up a bit); for our purposes, your life. After turning the hammer off he/ she steps back to survey

the progress made and then proceeds. Unless you are a skilled operator, the jarring would throw you off balance and you might have difficulty thinking clearly.

Your jackhammer is whatever issue it is you are grappling with at any time. It’s during the few moments of quiet and stillness; when the operator is checking out the progress, that you have an opportunity to fight back!

Use that time to plan and marshal the physical, mental and emotional stamina that you can call upon to get you through the tough times. That could mean getting your financial house in order, a career change that

you make or just reviewing your life and planning the changes you want to make.

One thing is for sure, you know that you can count on changes in life. Don’t wait to hear or feel the vibration of the jackhammer chipping away at your foundation. Life’s door is always open, the opportunity to improve your life awaits . . . don’t miss your cue!

We should also make that same determination to our families. Your children need both parents. Fathers need Mothers.

Coach Steven Lynn, leader of the Fatherhood Initiative, told us that we need to go shopping for

school supplies. Be involved in your child’s school work. Introduce yourself to the teachers and staff at the school.

Just as importantly – Fathers should take their children to school or pick them up as often as possible. Well Dads this is the official weekend to move our college-aged kids to school and Coach recommends you get an early start! Nothing gives your kids more pride and strength than when Dad escorts his kids to the campus making sure anything and everything goes smooth! Here’s the play...

Hit the road early to beat the mad rush and cha-

otic excitement on campus. Have your kids take a commanding role in making sure all the details are covered regarding their room & administration teaching them how to manage their business. Prepare yourself for lots of lifting, having patience and stamina. “Household Workers Unite”

here is not a speck of dust in your home.

The floors gleam, the kitchen shines, the bathroom sparkles, and rugs are fluffy again.

You’ve changed bedsheets and you even washed windows. You’re ready for fall and thankful for the help you had getting this way; if that help was paid, read ‘Household Workers Unite” by Premilla Nadasen, and you’ll be thankful for even more.

Picture this: a white reporter encourages African American maids to “speak out about their hardship” and the women who employ them. You know the movie, but did you recognize the “victimization theme”? Yes, says Nadasen, The Help “reinforces dominant stereotypes of passive household workers,” even though there was historically nothing passive about them…

In the years following the Civil War, the “Mammy” figure took hold in white America, becoming somewhat of a cult based on the idea of a loyal, maternal female slave. That vestige of slavery (and inherent racism) generally affected how African American domestic workers were treated by white female employers then, but “new ideas were germinating.”

In 1881, black laundresses formed a “Washing Society” and eventually went on strike for higher wages. Activism never stopped, but there was a setback in the fledgling movement during the Depression, when black domestics found daywork by sitting in a street corner “slave market,” and that didn’t go unnoticed. By 1934, journalists, activists, and other black feminists threw their support behind Dora Jones, who led the Domestic Work-

ers Union (founded in 1934) in New York.

Nurse, midwife, and housekeeper Georgia Gilmore used her cooking skills to raise money for “The Club from Nowhere,” a group supporting activists and organizers both financially and with food.

Undoubtedly, the Civil Rights Movement spurred Atlanta’s Dorothy Bolden to work with Dr. King on behalf of household workers.

Cleveland’s Geraldine Roberts founded the Domestic Workers of America. Edith Barksdale Sloan pushed the movement along when she became head of the National Committee on Household Employment. Other influential women bore their share of the movement, just as today’s activists help protect the workplace rights of caregivers, personal helpers, and domestic workers of all races.

Imagine seeing a federally-funded monument to the “black mammy,” standing in our nation’s capital. Yep, in 1924, the United Daughters of the Confederacy tried to build exactly that, and it was “furiously opposed.”

That’s just one of the stories you’ll read inside “Household Workers Unite.”

Stories, says author Premilla Nadasen, are what she tried to fill her book with, in fact, and she somewhat succeeds. There are, indeed, a lot of stories here, but there’s plenty of dryness, too, in the form of names, dates, and acronyms that ultimately become quite overwhelming. My advice is to try and get through them; this book is powerful and inspiring, but the voices and their memories are what matters.

This isn’t your curl-up-in-front-

of-a-fireplace kind of read but it is a pleasure, especially if you’re a historian, feminist, or domestic worker yourself. “Household Workers Unite” will make you think as it eats up every speck of your time.

UNY Maritime held their annual INDOC graduation and swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, August 22. INDOC is a mandatory ten-day training program for incoming cadets at SUNY Maritime. The graduation ceremony featured keynote speaker Senator Jeff Klein.

Senator Klein has

been a strong supporter of SUNY Maritime throughout his career.

Last year, he secured $1.5 million in the New York State budget for a new Seamanship Center to support the college’s Marine Transportation curriculum .

In 2013, he helped secure FEMA funding to help with post-Super-

storm Sandy rebuilding efforts. In 2010, Senator Klein allocated $100,000 to SUNY Maritime for the construction of a two-story diesel maintenance lab modeled on the U.S. Navy’s cutting edge facilities.

Queens Organization Offering Free Tuition for Alcohol & Substance Abuse Counselor Training

O

utreach Training Institute is offering scholarships and job placement assistance for its Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) training program to those who qualify as low income and meet certain other criteria.

Through a grant, unemployed individuals or those earning less than $20,000 per year are able to enroll in the program located in Richmond Hill, Queens. In addition to free tuition, students receive career development guidance through services including resume-writing workshops, vocational assistance, internship and career placement, and much more.

Since September

2014, OTI has also been providing skill-building workshops on study skills, clinical writing, and practice on electronic health records.

These new workshops, all offered on the same campus, will not only prepare OTI students for the workforce, but help them remain and advance in the ever-changing field.

The scholarships are meant for low-income students and/or those with limited education, particularly those with a high school diploma or GED. Such candidates may be unemployed, working at low wage jobs, on public assistance or re-entering the workforce after a period of disability.

To date, more than 2,000 people have taken

advantage of the high quality training at Outreach. A large percentage have already graduated and moved on to jobs in the treatment field as substance abuse counselors.

To qualify, students must meet the following criteria: Prior and current year annual income of $20,000 or less, or unemployed during that period (must be documented).

A high school diploma or G.E.D (documentation required).

Residency in one of the five boroughs of New York City.
