Educating the Heart “The values of servant leadership—putting others first and leading from the heart—need to emerge from every corner of American life, including the business community.”

These are the words of Starbucks chairman and chief executive Howard Schultz in a recent New York Times opinion piece. Although his editorial was about leadership in politics, in the one sentence above, he touches the core of what we need as a country to change our direction and fulfill our potential as a great nation and leader in the world.

Schultz says we have to lead from the heart in our politics, in our educational systems, in our businesses and in our lives. But, in order to lead from the heart, we have to educate the heart. In fact, we need to prioritize heart education to the same level that we consider math and science. We need to make the

heart and the brain full partners in the educational process. This is the only long-term answer to the dilemmas we face.

What does heart intelligence look like? First. I’ll tell you what it is not.

It is neither sentimentality nor emotionality. We could say that both are signs of an uneducated heart. In truth, an educated heart looks a lot like the teachings of Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed or the Dalai Lama; it’s Pope Francis saying “whom am I to judge” instead of “they’ll burn in everlasting hell.” This is heart wisdom and, along with it, comes humility.

An educated heart values compassion, empathy, respect and kindness. An educated heart is one in which empathy is readily available and really understands that “there but for the grace of God go I.” An educated heart is skilled in listening

By Don St John, Ph.D. to others, listening to understand, to be willing to be changed by what is heard. An educated heart is skilled in conflict resolution, can remain centered in difficult conversations, it can feel and deal. An educated heart knows the value of deep interpersonal connection, transparency, open heartedness and deep intimacy both sexual and not. An educated heart values science but knows that it is one way of knowing. Science can offer humanity a great deal, but it cannot replace spiritual development-- the education of the heart.

We need wisdom, not a blind insistence that we are right and those whose beliefs are different are wrong. And we certainly don’t need an ongoing political war to force our beliefs on others through law. As long as “education” is all about the “mind” we will continue to find ourselves in the situation we are now

in. We can develop greater medical devices and procedures, better technology, better weapons, but we won’t develop better more robust more deeply satisfied, less addicted human beings.

We need new definitions of intelligence that include the intelligence of the heart. We need new definitions of what it means to be educated. To ignore heart education, interpersonal educations is to leave blind spots that profoundly affect the lives of individuals, couples, families, communities and societies.

It’s not technology that will save us. It is educating the human heart and elevating its intelligence alongside of the rational analytic mind.

Columbia University Celebrates

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH DOLORES PRIDA Cuban-American journalist, playwright, activist, and proud East Harlemite. Prida’s plays and poems were largely focused on the Latino experience; many of her characters were Latinas struggling against repressive gender ideologies and racism in the United States. As a journalist, Prida wrote with acuity and wit about the joys and challenges of the U.S. Latino experience and published a popular advice column titled Dolores Dice (Dolores Says) that earned her the title Latina “Dear Abby.” She was part of a group of Cuban-Americans between Cubans on the island and the diaspora. After Prida’s death in January 2013, President Obama wrote in a letter to her family, “With conviction, compassion, and humor, Dolores used her gifts to connect with people across the Latino community and around our country.” Columbia’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library will host a panel discussion of her life and work Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. To learn more, visit library.columbia.edu/events.

ne Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York (OHBM) awarded $100,000 in college scholarships to 51 talented graduating students from a dozen New York City public high schools at a ceremony earlier this summer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “As founders of The Eagle Academy for Young Men eleven years ago, The One Hundred Black Men of New York today continues its work to mentor and empower young men and women

For more than twenty years, One Hundred Black Men, Inc. has provided scholarships based on academic performance, community service and financial need to seniors in New York City public schools who have been accepted to an accredited college or university. As the founder and initial sponsor of the Eagle Academy for Young Men, scholarships are given to Eagle Academy graduates.

The Eagle Academy was

opened in the Bronx in 2004 as New York City’s first single-gender public school in more than thirty years. Schools are also open in Brooklyn, Harlem and Queens, each with a focus on academic excellence, leadership and character development.

One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York was founded in 1963 when a group of successful African-American men came together to pool their resources to positively impact the Black community. One Hundred Black Men, Inc.’s service projects focus on mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic empowerment. The organization has a successful history of working with its corporate and non-profit partners to improve communities and transform lives.

A celebrated example is the establishment of The Eagle Academy for Young Men in the Bronx, with a focus on academic excellence, leadership and character development. The idea of “getting a better deal” is a fantasy. This is the only hand we have to play. Rejecting the deal will leave us isolated on Iran and many other key world issues, especially any future sanctions, and if necessary, require military action.

To those who say we cannot trust Iran on this deal, I say: If we trusted Iran we would not need this deal. The only thing we -- Republicans and Democrats, liberal and conservative -- have to concern ourselves with is how we can enforce it against a country that has no history of telling the truth.

If ever there was a time for us to come together and support a policy that time is now.

While I will not be in Congress in the years ahead when the JCPOA is implemented, I will take pride in knowing

that I took action to make the world safer for the United States of America, Israel, and future generations.

As a veteran, I know all too well that war is unpredictable and sometimes inevitable.

I also know that the greatest casualties of war are those who fight it and innocent civilians. As such, I joined a minority in Congress in opposing the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 that started the Iraq War. History has shown that the Iraq War was a tragic mistake that has cost our nation dearly while making the world less safe.

Like others who have known the horrors of war, I say we should always give diplomacy a chance before we put any American in harm’s way.

Rep. Charles B. Rangel, who represents New York’s 13th congressional district, has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1971 and is a decorated Korean War veteran.

at Stevenson, the Founder, CEO, and publisher of Harlem Community News, Inc, which publishes Harlem News, Brooklyn News, Queens News, and Bronx News, was honored by politicians, business owners, employees, community leaders, colleagues, friends, and family on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at the Alhambra Ballroom on 126th and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard for 20 years of publishing and community service in Harlem and beyond.

Stevenson, who publishes 2.6 million papers a year using the slogan “Good News You Can Use,” looked elegant in a royal purple gown as she mingled with guests assembled by the planning committee for the event.

That committee included an esteemed list of those who wear many hats in the Harlem Community, including Sabrina Brice, Maria Grazia Cavenaghi, La-Verna J. Fountain, Eugenia Foxworth, Dawn M. Hill, Ruth D. Hunt, Princess Jenkins, Pat Lilly, Virginia Montague, Tony Rogers, and Thelma Russell.

Stevenson was honored by many, including three local politicians, two of which attended the event.

Councilwoman Inez Dickens honored Stevenson with a proclamation, and said that it was “Primary Day, but I could not not be here for the Diva of Publishing.”

PBS personality Denise Richardson spoke on behalf of Congressman Charles Rangel, who along with his colleagues,

were able to proclaim Thursday, September 10, 2015, Patricia Stevenson Day. Many others spoke about Stevenson, including Princess Jenkins, who called her transparent, saying that she is unafraid to celebrate good days and admit when she is having bad days, adding “there have been some incredibly good days,” and calling her “a change agent in Harlem” whose work in publishing will be celebrated in The Schomburg

Walter Edwards said of Stevenson “we look at you as a pillar of strength,” and Thelma Russell referred to her as “one of the hardest working entrepreneurs I’ve ever known.” Dr. Eunice Ramsey-Parker called Pat “Classy and classic, well-rounded, yet down-to earth,” and Lloyd Williams said” he, had to be there, “ told Stevenson “how proud I am of you…I respect you and I love you.” Stevenson got

emotional several times during the event, saying “this is one moment I will hold in my heart.”

On a personal note, I have been with Harlem News for a year. What brought me there? As a Harlem-based journalist, it made sense for me to write for the largest and most visible Harlem paper. In the year since, I have learned countless business and life lessons from Pat, and have been honored to cover and write about great events, including Jacob Restaurant’s Thanksgiving Day

food giveaway with Congressman Charles Rangel, the Uptown Women Business Owners event that the Honorable Gale Brewer mentioned earlier, and this event Thursday. Pat Stevenson has created a legacy in Harlem through her work in publishing and community service, and I am honored to be able to witness it.

Back-to-School Planning for Returning Students

ould a mid- to late-career return to college make sense for you?

It’s essential to evaluate whether this is a financially risky move. In recent years, older Americans have been heading back to school part-time and during evenings in greater numbers than students of typical college age. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, enrollees 25 years of age and older account for 40 percent of all undergraduate and graduate students – by

2020, that number will rise to 43 percent.

Statistics proliferate on how much more valuable undergraduate college degrees are than high school diplomas alone – a recent Pew Research Analysis study reported that college graduates aged 25-32 and working full-time earn about $17,500 more a year than employed adults in that age group with only a high school diploma. It’s an indication why college is a fairly clear sell for younger people.

However, for people

over 40, there are no similarly clear-cut rewards.

That’s why it’s particularly important to do extensive due diligence before returning to college or any other training program. That’s doubly true if you can’t afford tuition out-of-pocket.

Here are considerations to make before making a mid- or late-career return to the classroom: A degree doesn’t mean a job. That may seem obvious given the recent hiring fortunes of younger, first-time col-

lege grads. However, even though some job indicators are looking up for older workers, it doesn’t mean past experience and a high-quality degree or certificate program will immediately lead to employment or better pay or for how long. Start with a thorough examination of working conditions and hiring forecasts (http:// www.bls.gov/oes/) in your chosen field. If it’s a complete career change, add face-to-face networking and observation of the job in action, if possible. Most of all, it’s important to know whether employers in that specific field really are interested in hiring older workers and have a record of doing so.

Fully evaluate your finances. As risky as student debt levels are now – the average student is borrowing around $30,000 – spending money on school when you’re older is a much riskier proposition than when you’re young. Consider that late-life tuition is

money that won’t go to retirement, a child’s tuition, an older relative’s needs, consumer debt or financial emergencies. In other words, it’s an investment that really has to pay off. Also keep in mind that student debt cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. This is why it is important to seek qualified financial and tax advice before committing to spending savings or taking out student loans to return to school.

Determine how long you really plan to work.

A 2013 Gallup poll indicated that three in four U.S. workers plan to work past the conventional retirement age of 65, but no one really knows how long they’ll be able to work given health and other factors.

Will you be able to recoup the cost of training based on the number of years you hope to work?

Find the most affordable training possible. If a field is friendly to new workers your age, what will you have to invest in training to get the

right job? Will it require a masters-level degree or a training certificate that makes you a specialist in a specific skill? Will some employers accept free or low-cost online courses being offered by known colleges and universities? The American Association of Community Colleges’ Plus 50 Initiative is a useful resource for lower-cost training options at community colleges throughout the country. Also check with your chosen industry’s leading trade associations to see what certificate training is most popular within the field and what it costs.

Bottom line: Education is beneficial at any age, but mid-to-late career workers should evaluate their finances and thoroughly investigate degree programs before going back to school.

Columbia University Double Discovery Center 50th Anniversary Fundraising Gala

T

he Double Discovery Center (DDC) hosted a 50th anniversary fundraising gala on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at 6:30 p.m., in Columbia University’s historic Low Library Rotunda. The celebration honored Joel Klein CC’67, CEO of Amplify and executive vice president of News Corp, and Roger Lehecka CC’67, GSAS’74, DDC co-founder and the College’s dean of students from 1979 to 1998.

DDC — a Columbia College program that works to enhance the higher education opportunities for low-income and first-generation college-bound youth in the surrounding community — has made college a reality for thousands of its

alumni through services that include one-to-one advising, workshops, homework help, tutoring, academic classes, internships, college trips and special events that range from career days to science labs. Now in its 50th year, DDC continues to foster a culture of achievement, instilling the skills, confidence and hope needed for these students to pursue their highest aspirations, complete their educations and become productive members of our communities.

“Double Discovery Center has a mission that connects directly with the mission of Columbia College to both educate students and propel them to use that education as engaged and responsible

citizens of their communities and of the world at large,” said Columbia College Dean James J. Valentini. “DDC provides Columbia College students a special opportunity to develop and express the ability to contribute to the education of others, and to realize the great benefits they themselves gain in doing so. It is indeed a program of double discovery.”

“We are thrilled to honor Joel Klein and Roger Lehecka while also celebrating 50 years of DDC’s efforts,” said Executive Director Joe Ayala CC’94. “Joel has been a big voice for educational innovation and a leader in our area, and Roger’s commitment and dedication is in many ways

responsible for the survival of DDC throughout the years.

Without their efforts, the work that DDC has done for the past 50 years, work that we will continue to do, would not be possible.”

“DDC helped me to understand that I can have [the same access and opportunities],” said Dana Mondesire CC’14, a 2010 DDC graduate who also volunteered at DDC while a Columbia College student. “DDC can change someone’s life and their entire perspective on life. This is a big reason why DDC is so beneficial.”

All proceeds from the gala will support DDC in its work to expand access to higher education for low-income high

school students from underperforming schools ¯ almost all of whom will be the first in their families to attend college ¯ by providing mentorship, academic support, college advising and cultural enrichment.

The Double Discovery Centerhas worked to increase high school graduation, college enrollment and completion of high school education by low-income and first-generation college-bound youth from low-performing schools in northern Manhattan for 50 years. Founded as Project Double Discovery in 1965

by Columbia University and Barnard College undergraduates who wanted to address the disparities between the

Ivy League institution they attended and the underserved and underperforming schools in the community around them, the program set forth to improve local schools by exposing students to the rigor of Columbia while simultaneously engaging Columbia and Barnard students with their surrounding neighborhood. Annually, 90 percent of DDC high school seniors graduate from high school on time and enter college the following fall, a record that far surpasses City, State and national outcomes for low-income, first-generation college-bound and minority students.

etting recommended preventive services and making healthy lifestyle choices are key steps to maintaining good health and well-being.

Preventive services include regularly scheduled screening tests and vaccinations.

Your health care team can provide these services to help prevent you from becoming ill.

To help doctors and patients decide together whether a preventive service is right for a person’s needs, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force develops recommendations based on a review of scientific evidence.

Screenings that may be

recommended for all adults include: • yearly physical exam • blood pressure • chronic kidney disease • heart disease • dental disease • hepatitis • HIV • vitamin deficiencies • alcohol and cigarette use • cholesterol • colorectal cancer, depending on age and family history Screenings that may be recommended for adult women include: • mammogram for breast cancer • Pap smear for cervical cancer Screenings that may

be recommended for adult men include: • prostate cancer • testicular cancer Be sure to ask your doctor or someone on your health care team about which preventive screenings are right for you. Some tests are needed once a year, while others are needed more or less often. Remem-

ber to talk to your relatives to find out which diseases run in your family, and share this information with your doctor. It can help to write down your questions about screening tests ahead of time.

Why Get Vaccinated?

The diseases that vaccines prevent can be dangerous, or even deadly.

Vaccines reduce the risk of

infection by working with the body’s natural defenses to help it safely develop immunity to disease. Sometimes, after getting a vaccine, there may be minor symptoms, such as fever.

Such minor symptoms are normal and should be expected as the body builds immunity.

Because vaccines must be safe for use by as many people as possible, they are developed in accordance with the highest standards of safety. Years of testing are required by law before a vaccine is licensed and distributed. Once in use, vaccines are continually monitored.

Ask your doctor or health care team about which vaccinations are right for you. Vaccinations

ell, I promised you “stuff” from time to time . . . and now, it is that time again! You see, there are times when you think that you are doing all you can do to be your best and wouldn’t you know it . . . right on your heels there are those girlfriends who would try to tear you down because they feel threatened by your indomitable spirit. What to do? What to do? Be-

come the Teflon President? Easier said than done . . .

If you are at all human then you know it hurts, especially when they try to tear you down while disguising it as “constructive criticism” or a “friendly aside.” At first you listen intently and as the conversation progresses you begin to recognize the tell-tale signs of insidiousness creeping into the socalled “well-meant” intentions. Or, maybe you listen to the entire conversation, missing their intent completely and the maliciousness of the review hits you much later!

So, how does one

separate the wheat from the chaff when trying to decipher the message?

Clearly the answer will not be found in a Cracker Jack decoder ring. No my dear, you have to develop a highly sophisticated radar system to track all in-coming bull . . . oney (smiles)!

Ms. Negativity: Will listen to your good news and then proceed to puncture your balloon

by pointing out all that could go wrong.

Ms. Subterranean: Will listen to your good news, hug you, jump up and down with joy, even organize a celebration in your honor, then unbeknownst to you, points out all that could go wrong to your mutual friends.

Ms. Can’thandleit: Will listen to your good news, and then disappear for a long time afterward, even though she seemed to be so happy for you at the time.

Ms. Ditto: Will listen to your good news, and then try to copy your success for herself.

Ms. Righton: Will listen to your good

news and then offer to do anything that she can to help and follow through with the promised support.

It would be easy to just limit your conversations and interactions only to tried and true friends and professional relationships, but real time in the real world gets in the way. It would be so boring to wait until the perfect moment, friend or acquaintance to come along when you have good news . . . If you choose to ignore your instincts, just remember that even a Teflon coated skillet gets scratched if you use the wrong utensil. Think about it. See you next week.

“The Beast Side: Living (and Dying) While Black in America” REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

That’s all it takes to snuff out a life. One bang, though there are usually more before someone is dead: Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, Tamar Rice, Jonathan Ferrell, how did we get to this point? Better yet, as D. Watkins ponders in his new book “The Beast Side,” how do we get out of it?

The list of the dead literally grows every day: statistically, an African American citizen is murdered by white cops, black cops, or neighbors every 28 hours. It’s war out there for Black America, says D. Watkins, and he’s tired of it.

His idea for ending violence and injustice is unique, but meaningful.

Watkins says that reading absolutely changed his life by teaching him to think critically, and it saved him. Literacy, he says, opens lines of communication, while sharing individual stories can educate and can make people eager to read. “The Beast Side” is, therefore, a book of stories.

How does it happen, for example, that a black writer from Baltimore – a city that’s sixty percent black – finds himself speaking at a large event where there are few black people? The reason: there are two Baltimores and the split is sharp. Before college, Watkins had little contact with whites. Do white people know what’s happening in east Baltimore ? Not many do, he says and when folks learn, they’re usually surprised.

It’s almost hard to grasp how many of Watkins’ friends and family have died by violence. He was only a boy when he witnessed a murder; crime was that common. He watched people on his street do anything to make a buck (they’re the hardest working people in the nation, he says); he sold drugs, hustled, and carried a gun (mandatory, he claims), but his brother wanted him off the streets.

Watkins went to college to become a professor and a teacher.

His stories help black men understand why they should respect black women more; they explain why Watkins doesn’t recite the Pledge of Allegiance, how black people are left out of pop culture, why reading is essential, and how eating poorly could be Black America’s worst habit. And they show how, deeply and despite the

rift in this country, we really aren’t so different after all.

Is that such a surprise?

At the risk of sounding Pollyanna-ish, no. But can that hope change the way things are, as reported in “The Beast Side”?

That, I think, will depend on your POV. Author D. Watkins says things that many people don’t want to hear and his words fairly seethe with anger – yet, pages later, those stories seem almost warm before abruptly turning to outrage and anger again. Hope followed by persistent reality is what you get, then, along with a lingering sense of rightful unease, inability to stop pondering, and a need to become much, much more educated.

Though its subject matter can be harsh, I think “The Beast Side” is appropriate for older-teens-to-

adults, particularly if recent news stories disturb you greatly. If that’s the case, then aim to read it.

he Harlem School of the Arts (HSA), an institution that enriches the lives of young people through training in and exposure to the four art disciplines, held an Open House on Saturday, September 12, 2015, opening the school’s doors to parents, neighbors, and the surrounding community to watch workshops, performances, interact with staff, view a pho-

tography exhibition that highlights the legacy and history of the institution, and much more.

Harlem News spoke exclusively to the newly appointed HSA President Eric G. Pryor at the event, who responded to a question about what he would say to those that have never experienced HSA. “First I would say you need to come inside.

There are different artistic experiences you can have”,

including being an audience member or viewer of an HSA performance, which could be anything from dance, theatre, music, visual arts, or a combination of several disciplines.

President Pryor also talked about what HSA can offer their students, young and old alike.

“We like to say when you engage in the arts, you tap into the four C’s. That being advancing your critical thinking,

the school, while others now work professionally in the arts.

Perhaps the biggest impact HSA provided for me was attending New York University.

I was accepted to every college I applied to, and it wasn’t because of my B- average. In September 1989, I was one of a select group of HSA students who traveled to the former Soviet Union as part of a cultural exchange program. As I met with those who would decide whether I was admitted or not to the schools in which

I applied, they didn’t want to talk about my grades, they all wanted to talk about my trip to the country that had been a foe of the United States for decades. HSA provided this Harlem kid with the ability to see the world and make life-long friends, amongst countless other things. What can HSA do for you? There’s only one way to find out. Harlem News also spoke to HSA Artistic Director Alfred Preisser, who first came to the school in the 1990s, about what the institution means to him.

“It means the synthesis of family life and art. Preisser reminisced on what he saw when he first came to HSA. “The theatre involved the community, the theatre involved the parents, the theatre involved ages from just old enough to walk to seniors.” That remains true, and is something you can see soon, as Preisser is hard at work on the holiday production of Soul Nativity, a great show that I had the pleasure of seeing a year ago. The production varies year-to-year, so make sure you keep an eye out for it.

Sophia Dawson is painting living people and regards the paintings as “wet paint” both because the people are still alive, and also she may decide to change the pictures. That happened with several of the people related to the Young Lords project when they visited Dawson’s studio in Brooklyn, NY. Pictures feature banners calling for the release of Puerto Rican political prisoners “Oscar and Avelino.”

and videographer Caecilia Tripp relates the imprisoning and shooting of Puerto Rican activists to the shooting deaths of young blacks in racially charged cases such as that of Trayvon Martin. ronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. presents the championship trophy for his annual “Borough President’s Cup” Little League tournament to the Kingsbridge Knights, who defeated Grand Slam Little League 4-2 on Thursday, September 3, at Yankee Stadium.

The tournament, now in its fifth year, is co-sponsored by the New York Yankees

and AT&T. To compete for the “Borough President’s Cup,” players for each Little League had to meet a set of requirements unrelated to their performance on the field. Those included a B-average in school, 90 percent or greater school attendance and a demonstrated commitment to community service.

13, the panel called “Imagi/ nation: An Intergenerational Reflection on the Young Lords’ Contributions to Visual Latino Culture in the USA” featured artists from the Young Lords art project. The terms “Imagine and Nation” refer to the changing ideas of the Puerto Rican ethnic group and Puerto Rico. Related exhibition on the Young Lords and art are on display at El Museo del Barrio, and at Loisaida inc. Hosted by curator Yasmin Ramírez, the panel included artists Sophia Dawson, Marcos Dimas, Yasmin Hernandez, Miguel Luciano, Juan Sánchez, and Caecilia Tripp.

Many urban areas in the NYC/Long Island region are experiencing significant business decline due to lack of business organization.
