First initiative in the nation to specifically target and address systemic disparities faced by young women

arlier this month Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and the New York City Council launched the Young Women’s Initiative, a multiplatform coalition aimed at supporting young women in New York City and combating chronic racial and gender inequality in outcomes when it comes to healthcare, education, involvement in the justice system and economic development.

Co-chaired by Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Ana Oliveira (President & CEO of the New York Women’s Foundation), Joanne Smith (Founder & Executive Director, Girls for Gender Equity) and Dr. Danielle Moss Lee (President & CEO of the YWCA of New York City) , the Young Women’s Initiative will convene stakeholders from across the City – including community-based organizations, advocates, policy experts and young women themselves – to inform how the City can transform the lives of young women and girls across the five boroughs.

“The Young Women’s Initiative is answering the call of so many to prioritize, resource, and invest in young women. This is the first effort in the nation to deeply examine and combat the systemic inequality faced by many young women, and together we will

determine how to help transform the lives of young women and girls across the five boroughs. Our young women are the future of New York City - they deserve equity in their education, healthcare, economic opportunity and access to justice. I thank all the organizations and individuals investing in this crucial work and I look forward to the conversations ahead,” said New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito The Young Women’s Initiative will analyze available data, examine the City’s current investments, and identify where the City can make a lasting impact. Together with experts in women’s issues and racial and gender inequality, the Young Women’s Initiative will also determine needs for programming, policy changes, data collection, and long-term research geared to-

wards closing the gaps in outcomes experienced by young women and girls, and young women and girls of color in particular, in New York City.

Over the next six months, the Young Women’s Initiative will focus on five broad issue areas through its working groups.

• Health: maternal mortality/ morbidity; sexual and reproductive health; chronic conditions; HIV/ AIDS; primary care; mental health • Education: early childhood; Pre-K; K-12 outcomes; school climate; afterschool programs; higher education • Economic & Workforce Development: employment readiness; employment opportunity; family-friendly workplace policies; pay equity; financial literacy • Anti-Violence & Criminal Justice: sexual assault; domestic and/or interpersonal violence; experience in the criminal justice system; human trafficking • Self-Sufficiency & Mobility: income supports; childcare; supportive housing; foster care; child welfare The Young Women’s Initiative’s final recommendations will generate a blueprint for New York City’s efforts to improve the lives of girls and young women,

including: • Policy and legislative recommendations that promote and support shifts in institutional practice.

• Budgetary recommendations for programs and services that are currently underfunded to serve this population.

• Long-term research on key issues that should be a public priority, but either lack data or merit further investigation.

“The Young Women’s Initiative was born from women and girls of color demanding inclusion in our nation’s racial justice fight of the 21st Century. Our communities will be made whole only when we intentionally address systemic and institutional racism, poverty and sexism while simultaneously creating the conditions for our girls and young women of color [trans and cis] to thrive alongside their brothers. YWI is intergenerational, strategic and visionary. I’m honored to Co-Chair and co-lead another way forward with some of the most intelligent and courageous people in the movement,” said Joanne N. Black and Latinos Working Together

f there was ever a propitious time for African Americans and Latino Americans to unite to advance the cause of freedom, justice, equality and economic empowerment, it is now.

Today, more than ever, the rapidly changing national demographics and the potential political and economic power as a direct result of Latino and Black unity in America cannot be overstated.

We are now in the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, across the United States. It is important to note that during this year’s observance of Hispanic heritage, Latino leaders are also articulating the strategic value and need for more unity between Blacks and Latinos.

In a recent column to the New York Amsterdam News, Bronx Borough President Rueben Diaz Jr. stated, “As we face heated, dangerous rhetoric on the issues that concern us the most,

the Hispanic community must not only stand together but to also unite with our allies of different backgrounds, such as the African-American community, to fight for the betterment of our communities.”

I know Borough President Diaz and I believe that one day he may become the first Latino mayor of New York City. Fighting to improve the quality of life in our communities is exactly what our long mutual struggles for justice and empowerment continues to be about. The two largest people of color groups in America are Latinos and Blacks. And if Blacks and Latinos unite in New York and elsewhere, it will achieve more effective political and economic results.

President Barack H. Obama issued a proclamation in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month stating, “America’s Hispanic community has woven unique threads into the diverse fabric of our country and played an important role in shaping our national character as a people of limitless possibility.”

We are witnessing a political challenge to the nation’s diversity with the exponential increase in residents of people of color in every region of the country.

Some studies show that the racial-disparity divide in America is becoming more and more pro-

nounced in housing, education, business, immigration, and mass incarceration.

Going forward will require a serious effort to ensure a massive voter turnout of Latinos and Blacks in the 2016 elections. Neither the Black nor Latino vote can be taken for granted. The political future of the U.S. will swing in the balance and scale of how Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) efforts will be financed, advertised, staffed and mobilized.

Neither elected officials nor Corporate America can effectively reach the Black and Brown communities by ignoring their media outlets. And a promising sign of increased unity between the two powerhouse groups is that the National Association of Hispanic Publishers (NAHP) and the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) have announced the establishment of a NNPA-NAHP National Advertising Task Force. The purpose of the coalition is to educate marketers on the benefits and importance of the African American and Hispanic newspaper markets.

“With close to 97 million African Americans and Hispanics in the U.S. today, representing 33 percent of the total population, this consumer segment demands attention,” said Martha Montoya, VP of the NAHP. “The buying

power of the African American and Hispanic communities, currently at over $2.3 trillion combined, continues to outpace the national average.”

NNPA Chair Denise Rolark Barnes emphasized, “This task force also marks a historic partnership between the NNPA and NAHP, the nation’s most influential publishing organizations that are currently led by women.

Martha and I have a shared vision and commitment to empower our communities by strengthening the voices of the media we serve.”

The potential force of African Americans and Latinos working together in business, politics, education, housing, family and community development are enormous. The challenge will be to achieve and maintain this unity not just for one year or two, but for a lifetime of solidarity and action to represent and defend the interests of our communities respectively.

Home Buying In Harlem Be Prepared to Buy Now

Apparently the answer that came out of the Harlem Home Expo held at the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building last Saturday was only if you are earning enough money to be pre-approved for the property. That answer speaks volumes to the situation that is now confronting low to moderate income community residents wishing to purchase a home in Harlem.

The cold and hard fact regarding lack of affordable housing simply comes down to the law of supply and demand. The demand for affordable

housing is much greater than the available supply. As property in the Harlem community continues to become more attractive and desirable to those from outside the neighborhood home values will steadily escalate. These are major factors contributing to rapidly rising home values.

Another factor to be taken into consideration is the fact that lenders have become more conservative in their lending practices. Now most lenders will only lend a prospective buyer 2-3 times their annual income. This again is not good news for low

A

sea of Black men, women and children covered every bit of open space on the National Mall during the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March, held on Saturday, Oct. 10 in Washington DC..

But when the man behind the march, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, stepped to the podium, his message may have come as a surprise to those expecting controversial rhetoric in his speech.

“We’re here because there’s no justice in this land – not for us,” he said. “Those who continue to suffer the most, the indigenous people of America, those whose ancestors were brought here as burden bearers in chains, we are the ones still seeking civil rights and the human right of self-determination.”

He emphasized the irony of the rally being held on grounds that once served as a marketplace for a bustling slave trade industry.

“This massive house behind me, the White House, was built on the backs and blood of slaves. I believe the spirits of our ancestors are pleased that we have come together in peace with one single goal: achieving long-denied justice and refusing to accept anything less,” Farrakhan said.

During his almost two-hour address, the Minister spoke to the challenges facing Black women, other ethnicities, veterans and Black gays and lesbians. And he said that they all have a place with him and other Muslims across the U.S. “Some have questioned why I’m talking to those of other races, why I’m talking to women, why I’m talking to our gay brothers and sisters,” he said. “We are all suffering. What good is life if one is not free? There must come a time when we’re willing to say enough is enough and then be willing to do whatever it takes to bring about the change that will secure our freedom.”

“This is a movement – not just one day on the calendar. The elders like myself have to begin to pass down the torch to tomorrow’s leaders,” said Farrakhan. “We have a program and an agenda in place. We need to put aside our minor differences if we want real justice. But it will require integrity, selflessness and sacrifice.”

n Saturday, October 10, thousands descended on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March, organized by the Nation of Islam and the Honorable Minister Louis Farrahkhan, demanding justice for Black victims of police brutality.

Speakers at the “Justice or Else” rally addressed the high-profile killings of Black men and women at the hands of police, economic empowerment and the need for unity and strong families in the Black community.

On Oct. 16, 1995, twenty years ago, the Million Man March was a call for one million Black men to seek atonement, reconciliation and responsibility for their families. This time around, Black women and children marched and chanted next to their husbands, fathers and brothers.

“The 1995 Million Man March was a significant event in American history and a transformative moment for an entire generation of African-American men,” he said. “This year’s march on the 20th anniversary is important for the next generation of Black leaders, as well as for the entire nation to take notice of their engagement to their families and community.”

Time For Reflection

T

ime, there is so much of it if you use it properly and so little of it if it's wasted.

You can't seem to catch up if you somehow manage to get behind and yet it keeps on marching on . . . . There is a time for everything, waking sleeping, working, playing, eating, the list goes on.

How you spend your time is up to you. As a commodity, time can't be sold or bartered for more time; that would require you be (mean that you would be) on someone else's time . . . or worse yet . . . borrowed time! It is also important

to give time, even if you don't have any, to other people or efforts. Giving time requires relinquishing even more valuable . . . you guessed it . . . time!

How do you make more time for yourself if you don't have time?

Truthfully, you don't and can't because your time isn't yours! Right? Is it really possible to give something that doesn't belong to you? When it comes to time, the answer is yes because if you fail to find time then you end up missing the time to do it later because you will see that you are running

out of time . . . again!

Then there are those we count on to always be on time, especially if we need them to help us monitor .our time, they normally provide services and operate on time schedules, trains, buses, subways and the like. We are sometimes amused (or not) if they run late, but their errors seem to really mess up our time! They make us realize that we should have given ourselves more time in the first place!

There are those who could really care less about our time, even

though you are paying for their time, doctors, hairdressers, manicurists etc.

They tend to ignore your request (pleadings) to be on time; but we tolerate it because to rush the service would mean that you won't get your money's worth and walk out undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, looking bad with jagged cuticles to boot! You see, they have to appear to give more time to each person, but in reality they are taking up our time.

Somehow we manage to forgive and forget even though they have taken up more of our time than

we intended. Go figure.

How about time and time again. . . . when we intend to do something and continuously forget?

Have you over planned to the extent that there is no opportunity for spontaneity? Is there ever a time to just be in the moment as life coaches are encouraging us to do? How many moments equal too much time? What ever happened to taking your time? It is said that time waits for no man or woman for that matter.

Be thankful for the time you have and make the most of it before today

becomes yesterday's tomorrow. Think about it.

O

pen mouth, insert foot.

Maybe it doesn’t happen often, but there are times when you have a knack for saying what’s on your mind at precisely the wrong time. You can’t unsay things, though, especially if you

mean them but as you’ll see in the new novel “Grant Park” by Leonard Pitts, Jr., at least those words won’t kill you.

In his heart, Malcolm Toussaint was always an activist.

The son of a Memphis sanitary worker, Toussaint grew up seeing the lack of equality around him, and he understood that higher education was a means of escape. Once at college, he grew an Afro, wrote angry pamphlets, and spoke his mind but, though he wasn’t alone in his radicalism, he was expelled from whiteman’s school anyway.

That was February 1968; it was cold but so was life, which Toussaint learned the spring before he returned to college, chastened and wiser.

Four decades later, the award-winning newspaper columnist hadn’t forgotten those days, which was why, early one morning,

he snuck into his editor’s office and quietly inserted a rant in the paper, a column that had been rejected by his superiors, a tired-of-white-people column that Toussaint knew would kill his career.

As the paper’s editor, Bob Carson was the first to reject the column so it especially stung that Toussaint’s action caused Bob to lose his job, too. Being fired was a shock, and there was more: not only was Toussaint missing, but an old girlfriend, Bob’s first love whom he hadn’t seen in years, was in Chicago with the Obama campaign and was hoping to have lunch with Bob. That was fine. He had nothing else to do. Toussaint had seen to that, hadn’t he?

For most of his life, Clarence Pym was bullied, abused, and didn’t have many friends, but he had Dwayne and their carefully-laid plans for Something Big. Recently, they’d formed the White Resistance Army, and Dwayne said it was time for white men to take America back.

It didn’t matter who died – starting with that Black writer from the newspaper…

It’s-only-a-book, it’s-only-abook, that’s what to keep reminding yourself here. It’s only a book which, because you’re immersed in history and authentic events and because the fictional parts feel natural, is easy to forget when you’re reading “Grant Park.”

And then there are those thrills – gasping, mouth-gaping page-turners that author Leonard Pitts, Jr. weaves through another realism: truthful, brutal plot-lines about racial issues of the last five decades, mulling over exactly how far we’ve really come. That makes this willthey-live-or-won’t-they nail-biter into something that also made me think, and I absolutely loved it…

Until three pages from the end.

There’s where Pitts, Jr. inserted a tiny little thread that almost made me cry with frustration and cliché-repulsion.

I could cry now, in fact, but in-

stead, I’ll recommend this book with one caveat: stop before you finish it. If you can, you’ll love it wholeheartedly with no disappointment. If you absolutely must read to the end, well, then liking “Grant Park,” is for open discussion.

763 Brooklyn Science and Engineering Academy, $64,000 for interactive smartboards and whiteboards at the School for Democracy and Leadership, and $120,000 for an auditorium upgrade at International Arts Business School.

Two high schools in Flatbush were supported by Borough President Adams’s budget: High School for Service and Learning at Erasmus, which received $50,000 toward a library upgrade, and Midwood High School, which garnered $350,000 for auditorium seating.

In Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, PS 92 Adrian Hegeman was granted $370,000 by Borough President Adams for a computer lab upgrade. He allocated funds to two schools in Crown Heights: $40,000 for TV broadcast studio and digital lounge equipment upgrades at New York WEB Center, and $350,000 for a computer lab upgrade at PS 335K Granville T. Woods. Furthermore, Borough President Adams designated funds to go to four schools in Brownsville: $69,000 for technology upgrades to Kappa V, $150,000 for school outfitting to Central Brooklyn Ascend Charter School, $150,000 for technology and auditorium upgrades to IS 392 School

for the Gifted and Talented, and $200,000 for an early childhood technology lab to PS/IS 323.

Borough President Adams provided grants to three East New York schools: $125,000 for a multi-sensory room at Spring Creek Community School, $130,000 for mobile STEM labs at East New York Family Academy, and $200,000 for a school library at Passages Academy – Belmont.

He also apportioned $100,000 for technology upgrades to PS 279 Herman Schreiber in Canarsie.

Abraham Lincoln High School and Rachel Carson High School in Coney Island were awarded $500,000 each by Borough President Adams for softball field upgrades and science lecture room upgrades, respectively. Additionally, he assigned $480,000 toward culinary program upgrades to William E. Grady High School in Brighton Beach and $750,000 toward marina construction to Kingsborough Community College in Manhattan Beach.

In addition, he allotted $60,000 for computer lab upgrades to IS 201 The Dyker Heights School in Dyker Heights.

Borough President Adams contributed $100,000 to P77K in Borough Park for a multi-sensory room, as well as $96,000 to Sunset Park High School in Greenwood Heights for technology upgrades.

He gave $35,000 for technology upgrades to the Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School in Windsor Terrace, in addition to funds for three South Slope schools: $100,000 for a Wi-Fi project at PS 10 Magnet School for Math, Science and Design Technology; $150,000 for technology upgrades at MS 443 New Voices School of Academic and Creative Arts; and $161,000 for technology upgrades at PS 295 Studio School of Arts and Culture.

Park Slope had two schools that received grants from Borough President Adams: PS/MS 282 Park Slope School, which accepted $35,000 for their coding and technology initiative, and PS 321 William Penn, which obtained $150,000 for solar roof panels. He granted $125,000 for technology upgrades to PS 38 The Pacific School in Boerum Hill, and $114,000 for technology upgrades to PS 29 John M. Harrigan in Cobble Hill. Borough President Adams also allocated $115,000 for gym renovations to the Brooklyn Secondary School for Collaborative Studies in Carroll Gardens.

In Vinegar Hill, Borough President Adams provided $52,000 to PS 307 Daniel Hale Williams for a mobile STEM lab. He also funded a $242,000 project for repairs and improvements to the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School’s home port in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

PS 414 Brooklyn Arbor in Williamsburg received $65,000 from Borough President Adams for technology upgrades; that neighborhood also saw PS 132K The Conselyea School garner $125,000 for STEM classroom upgrades as well as JHS 50 John D. Wells and Success Academy Williamsburg, which are co-located in the same building, acquire $500,000 toward an outdoor sports and recreational facility. In Greenpoint, he assigned $70,000 to PS 110 The Monitor School for computer lab upgrades and $100,000 for STEM labs to PS 31 Samuel F. Dupont. Borough President Adams additionally gave $175,000 for auditorium upgrades to PS 147 Isaac Remsen and $400,000 to Progress High School for their one-to-one laptop initiative.

Ten schools in Bushwick were given funding by Borough President Adams. The list of allocations in that neighborhood includes:

$52,000 for a mobile STEM lab at PS 75 Mayda Cortiella; $52,000 for a mobile STEM lab at PS 151 Lyndon B. Johnson; $52,000 for a mobile STEM lab at PS 299 Thomas Warren Field; $52,000 for a mobile STEM lab at PS 377 Alejandrina B. De Gautier; $100,000 for science lab upgrades at the co-located Academy for Environmental Leadership and Academy of Urban Planning; $100,000 for technology upgrades at PS 123 Suydam; $104,000 for mobile STEM labs at IS 349 Math, Science and Technology; $104,000 for mobile STEM labs at PS 376 Felisa Rincon de Gautier; and $104,000 for mobile STEM labs at PS/IS 45 Horace E. Greene. He also designated $150,000 to go to the Highland Park Community School in Cypress Hills for the Mae Jemison S.T.E.A.M. Makerspace.

Borough President Adams allocated capital funds to eight schools in Bedford-Stuyvesant: $52,000 to PS 44 Marcus Garvey for a mobile STEM lab, $52,000 to PS 256 Benjamin Banneker for a mobile STEM lab, $100,000 to Mott Hall IV for technology upgrades, $104,000 to MS 35 Stephen Decatur for mobile STEM labs, $158,000 to PS 373 Brooklyn Transition Center for technology upgrades, $208,000 to PS 23 Carter G. Woodson for mobile STEM labs, $350,000 to PS 40 George W. Carver for a rooftop greenhouse, and $588,000 to PS 297 Abraham Stockton for mobile STEM labs and library upgrades.

He also financed $52,000 toward a mobile STEM lab at PS 270 Johann DeKalb in Clinton Hill.

Following remarks by recipients, Borough President Adams presented each of them with an honorary check with the seal of Brooklyn Borough Hall and an oversized check, made out to “One Brooklyn,” for STEM education.

arlier this month Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams detailed over $13 million invested in 70 schools throughout Brooklyn, focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education and technology initiatives, from his Fiscal Year 2016 funds; the figure represents the largest apportionment of his capital budget. He made the announcement last Wednesday inside the auditorium of PS 193 Gil Hodges in Midwood, which is set to receive a $250,000 allocation to outfit their STEM/Technology Exploration/ Demonstration Lab, a multidisciplinary learning space for a diverse student population where 25 percent of students do not speak English as their first language.

Borough President Adams highlighted the impact that education projects he is funding will have across Brooklyn in schools ranging from elementary to higher education, including public, charter, parochial, and private institutions.

“The educational opportunities we create in Brooklyn should reflect the knowledge and skills necessary for the jobs of today and tomorrow in our borough, jobs which are rooted in STEM,” said Borough President Adams.

“Projects like mobile labs and hydroponic classrooms will foster creativity and problem solving ability needed to prepare students for high-quality career opportunities. My administration will continue to move boldly forward in education, unafraid to challenge old paradigms and try new approaches to maximize our youngest Brooklynites’ full potential.”

ew York City Councilman Peter Koo and health insurer MetroPlus Health Plan announced today that they will host a special seminar -”Health Plan Options for Immigrants” - to help educate our immigrant communities on the unique health insurance options available to them in New York City.

The FREE seminar will take place in Flushing Library in Queens, Monday, October 19th, from 11am to 3pm.

Compared to United States citizens and green card holders, new immigrants face many limitations in applying for health insurance. The health insurance Marketplace, often referred to as “Obamacare,” offers many affordable choic-

es on its menu, however, only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals and lawfully present immigrants are able to apply.

Adding to the challenges for new immigrants, it can be difficult for these new New Yorkers to understand if they qualify as “lawfully present immigrants.”

MetroPlus Health Plan will provide clarification for immigrants and encourage them to apply for health insurance options for which they qualify – including options for F(student), H(worker), J(culture exchange), and B(visitor) visa holders, as well as undocumented immigrants. The seminar will explain how new immigrants without Green Cards and/ or undocumented immigrants are eligible for health insurance.

orough President Melinda Katz will hold a regular meeting of the Queens Parent Advisory Board on Wednesday, October 21.

The meeting will feature a presentation by New York City Department of Education (DOE) officials for parents about how to navigate the high schools admissions process, as well an overview of recent changes to the DOE’s structure

of superintendents of high schools.

In addition, Borough President Katz will recognize the nine Queens high schools that were recently designated as “Reward Schools” by the New York State Commissioner of Education for having made the most significant progress or have the highest achievement in the state with no significant gaps in student achievement.
