New York City Mission Society Serves 200+ at 12th Annual Thanksgiving Harvest Community Dinner

triving to help its program participants and community members get a hot meal and save money for the upcoming holidays, the New York City Mission Society provided more than 200 meals at its 12th Annual Thanksgiving Harvest Community Dinner at Minisink Townhouse on Tuesday, November 17. Mission Society Board Members Jean Shafiroff and Jay Moorhead underwrote the event.

Society’s program participants, families, and area residents.

“Every day, we hear about

the hardships that many of our program participants and their families face. This annual

event presents an opportunity for us not only to celebrate the season with them, but provide a warm meal that will help them save money to be able to put more food on the table come Thanksgiving,” said Mission Society President Elsie McCabe Thompson. “What made this event even more special was the participation of our Board, and in particular Jean Shafiroff and Jay Moorhead, who are embracing the giving spirit of the season.”

In addition to Ms. Shafiroff and Mr. Moorhead, Board Members Peggy Bader, Laura Flavin, and Francis Kairson, Jr. served meals alongside

Young Professionals Society Co-chairs Cole Rumbough and Brook Laing, and Natasha Das, Taylor Burns, and Liz Shafiroff.

Minister Kirsten John Foy blessed the meal, at which attendees were served turkey, stuffing, hearty side dishes, pies and cupcakes, desserts and beverages. Sponsors this year included Whole Foods and Vita Coco.

Students participating in the Mission Society’s G.R.I.O.T. (Global Rhythms in Our Tribe) program treated attendees to a special performance. The free program was recently created in partnership with the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, founded

by Grammy Award-Winning pianist, composer, and educator Arturo O’Farrill, and provides musical instruction to youth.

This year, the Mission Society also continued its tradition of distributing turkeys in advance of Thanksgiving.

Donated by St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters, the turkeys were handed out on Wednesday, November 18, to participants in several Mission Society programs.

“As many of you may know, this year are celebrating 95 years here in Harlem and 50 years – yes, five decades – here at the Minisink Townhouse,” Ms. McCabe Thompson said.

“During all of this time – and throughout our more than 200 years of history – we have affected countless lives.

“Our mission has been and always will be to contribute to the well-being of our community. We value kindness, compassion, dignity, respect and excellence.

he Harlem Council Of Elders, Inc.,HCE, is a volunteer organization under the leadership of President Galen Kirkland, Esq.The Council

continues to plan yearly activities to support programs to benefit the children in the village of Harlem for more than twenty years. To that end, HCE has adopted three

schools. A Speaker’s Bureau was established where community members are invited to share their life experiences with the students.

Institute for New Technologies located at 509 West 129th Street, Manhattan was visited by Judge Milton Adair Tingling, representing HC’s Speaker’s Bureau. Judge Tingling is the first African American appointed as Manhattan Court Clerk. He spoke to them. Honorable Tingling asked, “Did you see the tape about Eric Garner on Staten Island? If you were in the Grand Jury, what would you have voted?

Would you have voted to indict the police officer?”

Judge Tingling stressed the importance of participating in the jury selection process. When the presentation and interaction concluded, the students walked into the hallway with their thumbs up showing their approval.

Most lenders require at least 24 months of clean credit and a minimum of 3 active credit accounts.

Then you must decide on a mortgage lender. Remember not all lenders will offer the same types of mortgage products. The next step in the process is to determine how much you can afford to spend on the home (monthly mortgage payments). Then select the loca-

tion and the type of property to purchase.

Your monthly household budget is the primary tool to help you with this calculation.

The bank will determine your pre-approval amount based on your gross monthly income, but your budget is based on net income. Your other monthly living expenses will also have to be factored into the equation.

These are crucial steps in the home buying process, because you want to make sure that you will be able to meet your monthly mortgage obligation and these other expenses.

In today’s market, most lenders are only lending about 2 ½ - 3 ½ times your annual income. This is why it is so difficult to purchase a home in Har-

lem. New banking regulations will not allow a borrower’s debt to income (DTI) ratio to exceed 43% of your monthly gross income. Even if the bank wanted to lend you more money it would be prohibited under these new guidelines.

This means you must have more money for a larger down payment to offset the purchase price and the amount of money you will be qualified to borrow.

This point again emphasizes the importance of aggressively saving as much money as possible to successfully buy a home in Harlem.

Black Theatre’s Best Spotlighted At 43rd Annual AUDELCO Awards

onday, November 16, Black theatre had a marvelous family reunion and acknowledged its own as the 43rd Annual AUDELCO Awards took place at Symphony Space on Broadway and 95th Street. There was such a warm, loving feeling in the theatre as Black playwrights, actors, directors and technicians came together to see who would win a VIV. The AUDELCO Awards are called the VIV, named after Vivian Robinson, a late co-founder of this event that makes sure that our people received kudos for excellence in Black Theatre.

The big winner of the night was the musical “Flambeaux” presented by the Obsidian Media Group, Braata Productions. It won six VIVs including musical production of the year; best director/musical production—Lawrence Floyd; musical director—Jeff Bolding; best choreography—Juson Williams; outstanding performance in a musical/male—J. Bernard Calloway and outstanding performance in a musical/ female—Althea Alexis.

“Our Lady of Kiebho” took the VIV on the dramatic side of the spectrum. It received dramatic production of the year. Playwright Katori Hall won outstanding playwright; Matt Tierney won sound design and Emily Rebholz received costume design.

New Federal Theatre’s production of “Dutchman” captured the VIV for light design, which was given to Antoinette Tynes.

In addition to acknowledging these creative individuals for their accom-

plishments, other honors were presented at the 43rd Annual AUDELCOs. A young man—Khadim Diop-- who has been seen in IMPACT Repertory theatre productions, short films and off-Broadway productions including “Seed”, “Children of Killers” by Katori Hall and “In the Wine Time” at the Hadley Players, received a well-deserved Rising Star award. Outstanding pioneer awards were given to actor, dancer, teacher, choreographer, director, author and theatre activist—Bernard J. Marsh; singer, actress of stage and screen and multiple award winner Sandra Reaves-Phillip—who still has the pipes, by-the-way; and Rudolph Shaw, executive director of Caribbean American Repertory Theatre, which

has built relationships with other theatre companies and brings productions to national and international stages. A Special Achievement Award went to BAYO, a production stage manager who is in demand and Les Ford, Nia Productions, a company that develops arts-in-ed programs to promote arts education in schools.

Board of Directors Awards were given to executive producer Darlene Gidney; AUDELCO patron of 15 years and 2nd Vice President of AUDELCO— Toni Peterson and actor/director Leon Pinkney.

A Special Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to me for being a theatre critic for the New York Amsterdam News for 30 years and it meant a

great deal to me. AUDELCO President, Grace Jones talked to the audience about the organization and thanked one of the original members, Mary B for her continued hard work.

The AUDELCO included energized performances from the nominated productions including “Ain’t Misbehavin’”, “Flambeaux,” and “Mighty Real: The Fabulous Sylvester Musical.”

The entire evening was so beautiful. If you are not a member of AUDELCO consider joining, this organization is a cheerleader for Black Theatre and that is something worth cheering, and supporting. Feel free to look up AUDELCO and find out about membership in this worthwhile organization.

CUNY, Record Enrollments Driven

by Value, Quality and Satisfaction

ty-four percent responding to the University’s most recent Student Experience Survey said they were very satisfied or satisfied with their academic experience. Fifty-six percent were very satisfied or satisfied with their social experience on campus, and 57 percent expressed satisfaction with the value of their education, according to a 2015 report. Sixty percent of survey respondents said their current CUNY college experience had met their expectations very well or well.

Negative responses to these student satisfaction questions were very low, ranging from 12 percent to 18 percent.

Academic quality is critical to CUNY’s value. The University’s campuses located across the city’s five boroughs serve as both academic and cultural centers, while providing programs ranging from college readiness to associate and baccalaureate degrees, to graduate education up to the Ph.D., J.D. and with the 2016 opening of the CUNY School of Medicine, the M.D. CUNY’s incomparable value starts with tuition. Average tuition at CUNY’s four-year colleges, $6,782 this fall, is among the lowest in the nation compared with other large public institutions including the University of Connecticut and Rutgers University, and New York metropolitan-area private institutions such as Columbia, NYU, Pace and St. John’s.

Nationally, average tuition and fees at four-year colleges and universities have increased significantly over the three decades stretching from 1985-86 to 2015-16. At private fouryear institutions, average published tuition and fees, adjust-

ed for inflation, rose by 139%, to $32,405 in 2015-16. The average published increase for in-state students at public, four-year institutions was 222%, to $9,410, according to the College Board.

CUNY stacks up well when it comes to such after-college earnings. According to College Scorecard, former students at the senior colleges consistently earned annual salaries that are higher than the national average, $34,343, 10 years after entering college.

Baruch’s former students had the highest average earnings at $54,000, followed by Queens College’s at $48,000, Hunter’s ($44,800) and Brooklyn and City College (both $44,500).

On average, salaries of former CUNY community college students were around the national average.

According to the New York State Department of Labor, 87.6 percent of CUNY students graduating with baccalaureate and associate degrees from 2003 to 2010 were employed in the state. Of those, 88.4 percent had baccalaureate degrees and 86.3 percent, associate degrees.

Among the top New York State industries employing CUNY graduates during the period were Health Care and Social Assistance, employing 14,659 graduates whose median annual earnings were $35,080; Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services, which employed 8,782 CUNY graduates who had median earnings of $46,408, and the Finance and Insurance Industry, which employed 7,984 with median earnings of $53,400.

recently came across two article suggesting that sleeping naked could improve your health.

Studies show that getting less than six hour of sleep per night can lead to a higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It seems the short sleep duration can lead to an elevated risk of IFG (incident-impaired fasting glucose). This elevated blood sugar can cause heart disease and diabetes. IFG can also cause weight gain.

quality sleep. Many studies show that sleeping naked can improve the quality of sleep. Sleeping next to a loved one or thinking of a loved one can stimulate a hormone known as oxytocin, also referred to as the “love hormone.”

Oxytocin can induce anti-stress-like effects by reducing blood pressure and cortisol levels. Studies show a stimulated oxytocin hormone can also lead to mental and psychical healing. Those who have lost the ability or desire to stimulate their love hormone tend to age faster than those who have not lost that loving feeling. Sleeping naked may be helpful to those who need a little oxytocin stimulation.

The body needs to be cool in order for you to sleep well. During a cold night you might not want to take off your clothes to get in bed. If you have the heat up, your heavy PJs on, under the sheets and one or more blankets, the quality of your sleep may not be good because of a overheated body.

Research is finding that regulating sleep temperature can bring relief to sufferers of insomnia.

There are two types of insomnia, people with sleep onset insomnia have difficulty getting to sleep. People with sleep maintenance insomnia fall asleep easily but will wake up a number of times during the night.

In both types the quality of sleep is not good, and suf-

ferers usually have a lack of energy during the day.

Keeping the body cool while sleeping will improve the quality of sleep; and sleeping naked can help keep the body cool. This is something that you can explore yourself. It may take a little deprogramming for some to jump into the bed with no clothes on. We have been programed to put on something when we go to bed. If you are like me sleeping naked was not part of my natural self-healing strategy but I suggest you try it for a few nights and see how you feel.

I like how I feel when I wake up after sleeping nude; I feel relaxed even if I only had a few hours’ sleep.

is’ the season to have a tendency to gobble up everything in sight! Last night, I attended the first of what I’m sure will be a round of holiday parties. So I started to think about how I would handle the accompanying food and drink that comes with partying.

It is hard to resist the tempting aroma of home fried chicken, fish, cornbread and potato salad, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy . . . all

the scents of the holidays and let’s not forget the champagne, wine, mixed drinks and eggnog to wash it all down.

So . . . I figure that if I have an issue, then surely someone else might have one too!

Have you figured out how to enjoy the holiday season without putting on additional pounds? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to eat, drink, be merry and not show the results of partying? Wouldn’t it be great if someone designed a garment that would “support” us throughout the season? Imagine going to your favorite store’s lingerie department to purchase a Lycra-en-

hanced undergarment and putting it on before going out each evening.

Ah, it sounds appealing doesn’t it? If only! Unfortunately such a garment would certainly restrict your ability to breathe or eat anything between gasps for air . . . or sit down for that matter. The undergarment would restrict your appetite as well as your ability to enjoy the evening’s festivities, and that’s no fun. The only true solution is to watch what and how much you eat instead of gobbling up everything in sight. Don’t let the season be a reason to overindulge. Think about it. See you next week.

ou have to tell somebody.

There’s a secret inside you, one you’ve been keeping far too long and you’re about to burst. You need to talk about it. You need some advice, some perspective. As in the new novel “Naughtier than Nice” by Eric Jerome Dickey, if you don’t talk about this issue soon, it could be the death of you.

Last Christmas Eve had been a memorable one for Frankie McBroom, for the wrong reasons: that was the day she spent thinking about how to cancel her wedding to Franklin Carruthers. He’d been her soul mate, her one-andonly… until she discovered that he was a married man.

As the eldest McBroom sister, Frankie felt as though she needed to set an example and she fought hard to forget Franklin . She

wished her relationship with him had been like what youngest sister Tommie had with her Blue. Or like what middle sister Livvy had with Tony. But no, Frankie had something else altogether.

Tommie McBroom felt bad that she was cheating on her fiancé.

Down deep, she loved Blue but he’d betrayed her: he knew how much she wanted a family and yet he’d had surgery to prevent it, which proved that he didn’t care about her. Beale Streets, on the other hand, listened to her. Yes, Beale was a few years younger than Tommie, but that didn’t matter when they were making love.

The delicate chain surrounding Livvy McBroom-Barrera’s ankle spoke to Livvy of different times, of days when she and Tony were estranged and she

first slept with a woman. The charm on the chain reminded her of things she learned, and lovers who disappeared from her life so suddenly. She thought of them often – especially when she and Tony brought another woman to their bed.

It was hard to believe that a year had gone by since Frankie caught Franklin in a lie. So much had happened since last Christmas, so much that wasn’t discussed. Tommie’s life was taking a turn. Livvy’s life seemed to be going backwards.

And Frankie? She was dealing with a blown-up phone, an acid-ruined car, bricks through her windows, belongings rearranged in her home.

Frankie was dealing with a stalker…

So you like a little spice with

your Christmas nog? Or maybe some extra pepper in your peppermints? Then “Naughtier than Nice” will make you very jolly.

In this somewhat-sequel, author Eric Jerome Dickey made a list of everything you want in a holiday drama – cheating, scandalous pasts, sex, murder, and light humor – and it’s obviously checked twice to add even more of the above. Although this book can be read as a standalone, readers then get to revisit some of Dickey’s best characters from other novels. His usual themes are mashed-up, and there’s a very nice gotcha or three scattered throughout this book.

That, and the fast-moving action, made me ho-ho-ho for this not-so-holiday holiday book and Dickey fans old and new will love

it. Just beware: start “Naughtier than Nice” and you’ll just have to tell somebody.

CAN-DO Tip #4: Ask yourself… “What Color Is My Food?” hen I think of the holiday season I think of colors -- beautiful orange, vibrant red, gold and blue leaves that blanket the streets…dark green spruce trees, candy colored lights and ornaments –but think for a moment…what if the colors of the food on our plate were just as beautiful and vibrant…wouldn’t we be too? After all, you are what you eat, right?

tables and fruits contain plant based chemicals (antioxidants) that fight cancer causing free radicals in the body. Some of these antioxidants in the form of flavonoids, chlorophylls and carotenoids are not only responsible for the pigment color in plants but also helps boost the immune system—especially critical during seasonal transitions like spring and Fall when your body craves certain foods that naturally prepare it for the hot or cold season.

Eating plant based colorful, seasonal, local foods will help keep your body in a healthier, more homeostatic (balanced) state.

Color me healthy!

Green vegetables and fruits contain chlorophyll (also known as the “blood of plants”) because it is the foundation of all plant life, and makes the vegetables

look green. The oxygen in chlorophyll engulfs the cells to destroy free radicals and its fiber and calcium content (kale contains more calcium than milk!) turns many green foods into “super foods”. How to get more color on your plate One strategy to eat with more color on your plate is to challenge yourself to consume at least 3 different colors on your plate at each

meal. Remember to give thanks for all the colors represented and for the variety of nutrients that will provide healing to your body.

Another strategy; at the supermarket, choose at least 1 fruit or vegetable that you are NOT familiar with or have never eaten before, every week for a month. Learn how to prepare it utilizing the limitless easy recipe resources on the internet.

any family members who care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s don’t think of themselves as “caregivers.”

For them, it’s just caring for a parent – a role they are happy and proud to take on. Yet, providing round-the-clock in-home care for someone with Alzheimer’s requires patience, understanding and vigilance. Finding simple ways to create a space that’s welcoming and safe can go a long way to reducing stress for everyone.

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and Family Caregivers Month: an opportunity to talk about ways to make life more manageable on both sides.

As a registered nurse and head of Partners in Care, a licensed home care agency specializing in private care nursing and certified home health aide services, I work closely with the elderly and family caregivers to ensure their comfort and safety at home. My team and I are often

asked to provide home safety assessments when a loved one moves in with a family member. Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind.

Bring Safety and Comfort Into the Home View each room through the eyes of someone with Alzheimer’s. Is there adequate lighting? Are light switches easily accessible? Are everyday necessary objects clearly in view? Check for loose objects that can cause falls, cover unused electrical outlets and exposed wires. Do stairs have

handrails, carpeting and safety grips?

Simplify Activities of Daily Living Individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia may forget to turn off appliances such as coffee makers, irons, ovens, stoves, etc. To ensure safety and lower the risk of fire hazards, consider appliances that have an auto shut-off feature.

Installing gas valves and circuit breakers in ovens can also keep loved ones from accidently turning them on.

Anticipating the needs of someone with Alzheimer’s can also go a long way. Minimize

late night trips to get food, water or use the bathroom by setting up a schedule and daily routine. Keep snacks and water easily accessible and place mats by the bed as an extra precaution against falls.

Ask for Help and Support It’s crucial to have a strong network of support when caring for someone with Alzheimer’s. When you notice signs of stress, take a step back to reflect on your own health and wellbeing. You may want to consider home health care resources—even for just a few hours a day. Look for a licensed home care agency

with experts in Alzheimer’s and dementia related care. A registered nurse will help assess your needs and work with you to develop a Customized Plan of Care tailored to your individual needs, and match you with a home health aide to help with personal care and daily activities.

Remember, you aren’t alone. Support groups and community resources can create a safety net when things become overwhelming. There’s no shame in asking for help.

Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito Announces Grant For Creative Industry Accelerator and Diversity Initiative City-wide program convenes key creative and industry partners in NYC for creative sector pre-professional training

The Roster will provide employers with one-stop access to the most comprehensive talent platform of diverse individuals for full-time, part-time, and freelance jobs, reaching New York’s creative industries including broadcast, film, television, digital, advertising, gaming, and new content platforms. The Roster’s design achieves two fundamental objectives: leveling the playing field for talent to access opportunities within the creative industries and providing companies with pathways for identifying and investing in more diverse qualified candidates.

Programs will connect emerging creative talent with New York’s most important sectors for film, digital, games, advertising, broadcast, creative tech and new platforms. Curated ex-

clusive events will serve as showcases for diverse talent using media, comedy, music and other creative hooks.

The Roster’s approach ensures a curatorial level of excellence that goes beyond more staid networking/business card exchanges. At scale, The Roster will serve as the single largest repository of diverse early career talent working across New York City’s creative sectors, functioning as a “go to” list for all of the creative industries looking across the board to develop and strengthen their commitment to building diverse teams and content.

Senator Klein Gives Thanks by Giving Back - Donates Thanksgiving Turkeys to Families in Need

tate Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) donated over 125 Thanksgiving turkeys to families and seniors in need in the 34th State Senate District on Monday and Tuesday at his annual turkey giveaway.

Senator Klein held turkey giveaways at locations throughout the district, including the Throggs Neck, Sack Wern and Pelham Parkway Houses. Individuals were also able to visit Senator Klein’s office and pick up a Thanksgiving turkey, a beautiful 14-16 pound bird to feed the entire family.

“Each year, I am proud to lend a helping hand to those who need it most. By donating Thanksgiving turkeys, I hope we can make families’ holidays a bit brighter, and help to make sure that those less fortunate have a turkey for their Thanksgiving table,” said Senator Klein.

ROOKLYN, NY, November 22, 2015: On Thursday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams recognized over 40 detectives from police precincts across the borough at an awards ceremony in the courtroom of Brooklyn Borough Hall. Joined by their families, honored detectives were cited for outstanding work they have performed as part of their duties, including past and present cases that in total have resulted in thousands of arrests. Borough President Adams, joined by members of NYPD leadership and Con Edison, which joined him in co-sponsoring the ceremony, highlighted the vital role that detectives play in ensuring Brooklyn’s public safety.

“Detective work is more than ‘Law and Order’-like glamour; it is a difficult pursuit of criminals that closes cases and brings closure for communities impacted by crime,” said Borough President Adams. “As a veteran of New York’s Finest, I salute all of Brooklyn’s detectives and express gratitude, on behalf of all Brook-

lynites, for the sacrifices they and their families make every day to make our borough a safer place to raise healthy children and families.”

“I am extremely grateful to Borough President Adams for recognizing these dedicated detectives that went beyond their call of duty to investigate serious crimes in the borough of Brooklyn and continue to keep it safe,” said Assistant Chief Patrick Conry, commander of Detective Borough Command Brooklyn.

CUNY, Record Enrollments Driven

by Value, Quality and Satisfaction ty-four percent responding to the University’s most recent Student Experience Survey said they were very satisfied or satisfied with their academic experience. Fifty-six percent were very satisfied or satisfied with their social experience on campus, and 57 percent expressed satisfaction with the value of their education, according to a 2015 report. Sixty percent of survey respondents said their current CUNY college experience had met their expectations very well or well.

Negative responses to these student satisfaction questions were very low, ranging from 12 percent to 18 percent.

Academic quality is critical to CUNY’s value. The University’s campuses located across the city’s five boroughs serve as both academic and cultural centers, while providing programs ranging from college readiness to associate and baccalaureate degrees, to graduate education up to the Ph.D., J.D. and with the 2016 opening of the CUNY School of Medicine, the M.D. CUNY’s incomparable value starts with tuition. Average tuition at CUNY’s four-year colleges, $6,782 this fall, is among the lowest in the nation compared with other large public institutions including the University of Connecticut and Rutgers University, and New York metropolitan-area private institutions such as Columbia, NYU, Pace and St. John’s.

Nationally, average tuition and fees at four-year colleges and universities have increased significantly over the three decades stretching from 1985-86 to 2015-16. At private fouryear institutions, average published tuition and fees, adjust-

ed for inflation, rose by 139%, to $32,405 in 2015-16. The average published increase for in-state students at public, four-year institutions was 222%, to $9,410, according to the College Board.

CUNY stacks up well when it comes to such after-college earnings. According to College Scorecard, former students at the senior colleges consistently earned annual salaries that are higher than the national average, $34,343, 10 years after entering college.

Baruch’s former students had the highest average earnings at $54,000, followed by Queens College’s at $48,000, Hunter’s ($44,800) and Brooklyn and City College (both $44,500).

On average, salaries of former CUNY community college students were around the national average.

According to the New York State Department of Labor, 87.6 percent of CUNY students graduating with baccalaureate and associate degrees from 2003 to 2010 were employed in the state. Of those, 88.4 percent had baccalaureate degrees and 86.3 percent, associate degrees.

Among the top New York State industries employing CUNY graduates during the period were Health Care and Social Assistance, employing 14,659 graduates whose median annual earnings were $35,080; Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services, which employed 8,782 CUNY graduates who had median earnings of $46,408, and the Finance and Insurance Industry, which employed 7,984 with median earnings of $53,400.

s student indebtedness nationally climbs towards $1.3 trillion, the City University of New York is providing extraordinary value, as its colleges experience continued record enrollments while more than 66 percent of full-time undergraduates attend tuition-free, 80 percent graduate debt-free, and tuition at its four-year colleges ranks among the lowest in the nation.
