o be known as a good leader, you should not only be capable of leading the pack and initiating actions for the betterment of your business. You must take time directing your team towards a more productive path.

Leadership can be shared. Being the leader can be something that you undertake entirely on your own, or can be shared by qualified individuals. In fact, a good

leader knows how to delegate duties to qualified members of the team, which requires the ability to determine competencies of each individual.

To find suitable individuals you will have to evaluate each team member, interview him or her, and express your belief in the person’s capacities. When you delegate tasks, this means you are trusting your team. You must also believe in their skill and commitment

to undertaking the job as expected, which will boost their confidence. In this type of set-up, social interaction plays a role.

Sharing the responsibilities requires trust between all of you, and this trust only comes from respect for the actions of each team member.

Once mutual respect has been earned, and it does have to be earned, trust will follow. After all, the success of any project or business depends on the

proper execution of the plan.

Leadership is a process of ongoing development. As the owner of the business, it is incumbent upon you to evolve your leadership skills through professional training, workshops and seminars that could enrich you further. Both formal and informal study will help to hone and sharpen your leadership techniques.

Learning to become a successful leader is not

something that you can do in a day; it is something that you need to practice in order for your business to become the success that you wish.

Most importantly, you need to make a serious effort to improve your leadership skills to inspire your team to do even better.

The responsibility of leadership begins and ends with you. Actions speak louder than words, and your standing as a leader will depend as much on what you do as what you say. No matter how many words of inspiration you give to your team, if you do not live by your daily preaching, no one will believe and accept what you say. Your credibility as a leader lies on your ability to fulfill your promises or claims.

Your manner of interacting with your business partners, team, clients and associates impact the way your staff thinks of you. Even when no one is looking, or in any situation you may be, you should strive to maintain qualities of a true leader. This may sound like a tall order, but developing strong leadership qualities takes time, but will eventually become a habit, which is essential in helping you run a business successfully.

From Mary Church Terrell to Barbara Lee: Black Women in the Peace Movement

ome words seem rarely mentioned in this highly toxic political season.

We’ve heard about bombs and walls, but very little about peace.

One is almost tempted, when some of the candidates are speaking, to burst into song – give peace a chance. In this Women’s History Month, it makes sense to reflect on women and the peace movement, and especially on the African American women who have been peace activists and have played a significant role in this movement.

The Women’s International League of Peace and Freedom (WILPF) was founded in 1915 in the midst of World War I. Its first chair, Hull House’s Jane Addams, cared deeply about world disarmament. Early on, though, there were criticisms of WILPF and the peace movement because African American were too often invisible. In a book poignantly title, No Peace Without Freedom, Race and WILPF, Joyce Blackwell writes about tensions within the path breaking peace organization. In a similar book, “A Band of No-

ble Women: Racial Politics in the Women’s Peace Movement,” Melinda Plastas writes that African American women combined the effects of race, gender and war, and “demanded a place for Black women in the international peace movement.

Mary Church Terrell was involved in WILPF almost from its outset, serving on its board for a time. The D.C. doyenne, who was one of the first African American women to earn a college degree, was involved in the civil rights and social justice movements. A teacher by profession, she was one of the first women to serve on the Washington, D.C. Board of Education. She played founding roles in many justice organizations, including the NAACP, the International College of Women, the National Association of Colored Women (NACW), and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Some of her dealings with WILPF were not smooth – she was not re-elected to serve a second term on the Board of the organization, to the chagrin of many of the White women who felt that Black women’s voices needed to be heard on peace matters.

Terrell was not the only woman who worked with WILPF during its early days. Addie Hunton came to activism early, working as an organizer for NACW in the ear-

ly twentieth century. She worked with servicemen in France during the war. Those war experiences perhaps influenced her to work as a peace activist during the 1920s. In 1926, she wrote a report condemning US occupation of Haiti. Bertha McNeill was another of the African American women involved in WILPF. She led the Washington, D.C. chapter, and also served as a vice president of the organization for two terms.

These women – as do some of our non-African American sisters like Media Benjamin and Arandhati Roy – come to mind in the middle of this raucous political season. Sane, calm voices are missing in these presidential debates. We are also missing a future focus that takes the futility of increasing militarism into consideration. With the immigration crisis sparked by conflict in Syria, the violence maintained by ISIS, unrest in the Middle East, and tension with Russia, not to mention the number of US troops still in Afghanistan and Iraq, wouldn’t it be appropriate for us to hear about alternatives to militarism.

That brings me to California Congresswoman Barbara Lee, the only person who had the courage to oppose President George W. Bush’s push for military action after September 11, 2001. She appro-

priately asked whether our country was rushing into war. Subsequent events suggest that we did rush – “weapons of mass destruction” were never found. Many of us are quite familiar with Barbara Lee’s peace activism, but far fewer of us know much about Mary Church Terrell and Addie Hunton. While African American peace activists were few in the WILPF early days, their contributions were significant and, more importantly, they paved the way for activists like Barbara Lee to advocate a peace agenda and a peace budget.

Those who profit from the military industrial complex seem so welded to the notion of war that they won’t give peace a chance.

And they’ll take war however they can – at home, as police departments are increasingly militarized (do we really need tanks in city streets), or abroad, where it is easy to create an enemy. Black women’s history of peace activism should be lifted up this month, especially the work of Mary Church Terrell and Barbara Lee. he Mackey Twins Art Gallery presents “The Legacy Continues: New Works, New Mediums” featuring exclusive works by acclaimed visual artist James Denmark. The exhibit will celebrate the 80th birthday of the master artist and run from Saturday, April 9, through Sunday, April 10, at the Mount Vernon, New York gallery. The Mackey Twins Art Gallery is the largest collection of exclusive works of artists of color in the tristate area.

Heavily influenced by Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Jacob Lawrence, Norman Lewis and Romare Bearden, Denmark is best known for his vibrant collage work and watercolors capturing Black life in America; however, he has created exclusive pastel watercolors, woodcuts and collages for this show. Denmark has had more than 60 one-man shows and his work is found in collections of the

Metropolitan Museum of Art and private and corporate collections across North America, Europe and Africa. The show will include 60 works by the artist for sale at the show.

The Mackey Twins Art Gallery was founded in 2004 by Karen and Sharon Mackey, identical twin sisters, with the mission of cultivating communities of art collectors and saturating homes and businesses with fine art. The co-principals’ personal, non-intimidating approach introduces the interested collector to art and develops him or her as a collector.

While their clients and supporters include Lonette McKee, Khalil Kain, Danny Simmons, Byron and Sylvia Lewis, Lloyd

Williams and Voza Rivers, others are firsttime buyers entering the field.

“The artist captures the magic of our lives,” said Sharon Mackey. “By purchasing an artist’s work, we are investing not only in that creative spirit but also in our culture and our people.”

“We have a deep yearning to see ourselves represented in all art forms but this cannot be sustained in the art world without our financial contributions,” said Karen Mackey. “We have a responsibility to support our artists and to contribute to them in the same way they enrich our lives.”

The duo’s collection includes exclusive work by acclaimed artists Xenobia

Bailey, Betty Blayton, Stacey Brown, Wayne Bowen, Leroy Campbell, James Denmark, Essud Fungcap, Magno Laracuente, Ruth Miller, Charly Palmer and TWIN. They have curated exhibits at numerous influential tastemaker events, including the Harlem Fine Art Reception at The New York Times; “Faith, Courage & Purpose” at the Central Park Arsenal Gallery and “Art’s Conscience” at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The sisters are recipients of the National Conference of Artists Black History Makers Award, the Leroy Campbell Exemplary Art Forum Award, the Harlem Business Alliance’s Community Service Award, the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and WBLS Urban Community Award and the 2015 Westchester County Trailblazer Award for Commitment to the Arts, among other honors. UN Women For Peace Association THOUSANDS MARCHED TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

U

N Women for Peace Association (UNWFPA) annual rally and march to end violence against women was held on Saturday, March 5th, 2016 at 11am at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, 47th Street between First and Second Avenues. The event was free and thousands marched. Fox News TV anchor, Lisa Daftari emceed the rally and help lead the march.

The event was in celebration of International Women’s Day, and Dionne Warwick led thousands in a march to end violence against women. Warwick wowed the crowd as she sang with 40 members of Brooklyn’s own Christian Cultural Center choir What the World Needs Now Is Love. The choir continued to sing throughout the march to 42nd street.

The speakers at the rally included: Muna Rihani Al-Nasser, Chair of UNWFPA; Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, Patron of UN Wom-

Actress Kat Graham energized crowd by saying “I’m proud to be here with the United Nations Women For Peace Association, an organization of women FOR women, that takes the opportunity to shine a light on the violence perpetrated against women all over the world and says “Enough is enough!” Women from all corners of the globe, no matter if they face the horrors of war as far away as Syria or if they are the target of sexual violence right here in the United States, Women for Peace says no woman should endure such hardships and will do all they can to put an end to their suffering. We have to continue to send the signal

to these women that they are not alone.”

Warwick, was the 2016 recipient of the Voice of Peace Award, she said “I am grateful to have been asked by this most incredible group of ladies to be an honoree, and moreover, to be the Grand Marshal too. What greater honor could there be! I truly am beside myself with joy and look forward to being a part of this most prestigious event.”

As you read these words, nearly 5 million women and girls are living in slavery, victims of human trafficking. 60 million more are child brides, and 140 million live with the pain of enforced genital mutilation.

These are more than just numbers; they are our mothers, our sisters, and our daughters.

Violence against women is a global issue. In some countries, one out of seven women are raped, abused, or mutilated. Around the globe, nearly one in five women

under the age of fifteen are sexually abused. Over 130 million women have experienced genital mutilation. It is estimated that as many as 2.5 million people are trafficked annually into situations including prostitution, forced labor, slavery, or servitude; women and girls account for about 80 per cent of the detected victims.

UNWFPA believes violence against women and girls is a criminal act that should not be tolerated. Yet, as you read this, five million women and girls across the globe are suffering from forced sexual exploitation or are victims of human trafficking. More than 60 million girls have no access to - or are being deliberately excluded from - primary and secondary school. One in three women experience violence from an intimate partner or sexual violence from a stranger in their lifetime. UNWFPA

was founded in 2008 under the patronage of H.E. Mrs. Ban Soon-taek.

UNWFPA aims at raising awareness about these horrible crimes. We seek to promote and advance the goals of UN agencies that provide opportunities for women through social, cultural, educational and empowerment programs within the framework of the global peace-building process.

All our proceeds go directly to the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women. The Fund, which aims to prevent and end violence against women and girls, provides services and programs to those affected by violence, and supports the implementation of laws and policies conducive to ending violence against women.

St. Mary’s Center Receives Funds for Expansion of Services Improving Access to Health Care in the Neighborhood

F

ollowing a lengthy and competitive review process, St. Mary’s Center has been awarded a grant from the New York State Department of Health, of up to $327,308 to fund a capital project for integrated behavioral health and primary care expansion.

St. Mary’s Center has been a leader for 24 years in delivering quality healthcare to residents with HIV/ AIDS at the skilled nursing facility and to clients with HIV/AIDS

in the adult day health care program.

This grant supports the growing need for treatment and services for people suffering from depression and other mental illness, as well as substance abuse. According to Holly Argent Tariq, CEO of St. Mary’s Center, “The need in our community far exceeds the current capacity. People are living with high levels of stress and many have difficulty coping.

With the expansion of Primary Care services

and a total integration of behavioral health into the model of care, St. Mary’s is poised to have a significant positive impact on the health outcomes of the neighborhood. In these ways we can provide the community with greater access to care in a nonjudgmental and clinically competent environment.” We are proud and grateful to be awarded this grant and will continue to serve the members of the community with the respect and the dignity they deserve.

Cynthia Eileen Alexandra Marshall May 12, 1939 - March 14, 2016

ynthia Eileen Alexandra Marshall was born in Manhattan on May 12, 1939 to Daisy and Alexander Marshall.

Her parents were from Barbados, West Indies. Cynthia was the youngest of three children. Her sister, Daphne Wilson predeceased her in 2001.

When she learned of the passing of Cynthia Marshall, Harlem Community Newspapers Publisher Pat Stevenson responded, “Cynthia was a dear friend of more than 30 years. When I was V. P. Media Director of J.P. Martin Associates, I hired Cynthia as a media supervisor. When I left the agency I recommended Cynthia could do my job and she

was promoted to media director. From that time Cynthia and I remained friends all these years. Cynthia was one of my biggest fans when I decided to start publishing community newspapers more than 20 years ago.

She was my go to person when things got tough, as well as one of the first people I called when there was something to celebrate. Cynthia would take papers each week and personally distributed them to others in her coop apartment building. I will truly miss my friend, Cynthia Marshall and send my condolences to her family.”

Cynthia attended the public schools of New York City, graduating from Washington Irving High School.

She attended Hunter College and started her career in advertising with Doyle Dane Bernbach. She went on to work for other notable advertising agencies including Compton Advertising, Ted Bates, NW Ayer International. While working at N W Ayer she returned to college and in 1979 received a BA from Fordham University. She was Media Director at J. P. Martin Associates and Vice President Media Director at Caroline Jones Advertising. Following her agency roles, she worked as a media industry consultant and media advisor.

She had a love for traveling, starting with her first trip to Europe after high school. Over the years she

explored numerous international destinations including, England, Denmark, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Balearic Islands, Greece and its neighboring islands, Turkey, Morocco, Canary Islands, Brazil, Barbados, Jamaica, Aruba, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Antigua, St. Martin, Canada and many locations throughout the US. Cynthia is survived by her sister Marguerite Wellington; brother in law Richard Wellington; nieces: Cheryl Wilson, Diane Wilson, Jennifer Wellington, Dr. Stephanie Wellington, Christine Wellington, great-nieces Asia Hibbert and Mackenzie Harding. Great-nephew, Brazil Hardings and friends.

A Celebration of Life was held for Cynthia on March 22, 2016 at Benta’s Funeral Home at St. Nicholas Avenue in Harlem.

The Gall Bladder is a pear shaped sack located in a depression under the liver on your right side.

The function of the Gall Bladder is to store and concentrate bile until it is needed in the small in-

testine for digestion. The bile breaks down fats in food. If the Gall Bladder gets congested with bile salts or bacteria; the bile will isolate it and form a pearl-like stone around it. You do not want this to happen. Irritability and uptightness can weaken the Gall Bladder in the spring.

The Liver stores large quantities of blood, minerals, and vitamins. The liver produces bile salts which are distributed by the Gall Bladder into the small intestine to absorb fats from the food that we eat. The Liver also stores all the toxins, poisons, chemicals, and drugs that

the body takes in. The Liver then breaks down poisons chemically into less toxic compounds that can be easily eliminated.

Toxins stay in the liver a long time. If the amount of toxic becomes too high gallstones can develop.

Time . . . To Take Charge!

When it comes to time, time for everything, waking the answer is yes because if sleeping, working, playing, you fail to find time then you eating, the list goes on. How end up missing the time to you spend your time is up to do it later because you will you. As a commodity, time see that you are running out can’t be sold or bartered of time . . . again!

Then there are those we for more time; that would require you be (mean that count on to always be on you would be) on someone time, especially if we need else’s time. . . or worse yet. them to help us monitor .our . . borrowed time! It is also time, they normally provide important to give time, even services and operate on time

schedules, trains, busses, subways and the like. We are sometimes amused (or not) if they run late, but their errors seem to really mess up our time! They make us realize that we should have given ourselves more time in the first place!

There are those who could really care less about our time, even though you are paying for their time, doctors, hairdressers, manicurists etc. They tend to ignore your request (pleadings) to be on time; but we tolerate it because to rush the service would mean that you won’t get your money’s worth and walk out undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, looking bad with jagged cuticles to boot! You see, they have to appear to give more time to each person, but in reality they are taking up our

time. Somehow we manage to forgive and forget even though they have taken up more of our time than we intended. Go figure.

How about time and time again . . . . when we intend to do something and continuously forget? Or over planning to the extent that there is no opportunity for spontaneity? Is there ever a time to just be in the moment as life coaches are encouraging us to do?

How many moments equal too much time? What ever happened to taking your time? It is said that time waits for no man or woman for that matter. Be thankful for the time you have and make the most of it before today becomes yesterday’s tomorrow. Think about it.

ou are the best kid… at something.

You can run the fastest.

You can jump the highest.

You’re the best skipper, the best hopper, or the best dancer. But what if there was somebody better than you? See what might happen in “The Quickest Kid in Clarksville” by Pat Zietlow Miller, illustrated

by Frank Morrison.

Alta was the fastest runner in Clarksville, Tennessee, and everybody knew it.

She wasn’t as fast as Wilma Rudolph, but Alta was close and that made her dream. What, she wondered, would it be like to have three Olympic gold medals hanging

around her neck? Would Wilma bring her medals to the parade she’d be riding in? The parade was tomorrow; Alta and her friends were even making a banner for it.

And then some girl Alta had never met before came “sashaying” over with the brand-spankingest, whitest shoes Alta had ever seen. She said her name was Charmaine and her shoes sparkled - they were just made for running.

Alta’s shoes had holes in them but shoes can’t tell who’ll win a race. Not even Wilma had the best things, at first.

Alta challenged Charmaine to a race – and won.

Charmaine won.

Alta was sure that was because Charmaine tripped her. Or because Alta’s toe was poking out of the front of her shoe, which really made her sad because Mama said those shoes had to last…

On parade day, while Alta and her friends were finishing the banner, Charmaine came by, strutting “like she’s queen of the block.” Alta wasn’t having any of that; she far preferred to remember that Wilma Rudolph, the fastest woman alive, was coming to town to be in a parade. Maybe she might even see the banner, and she might wave.

As Alta started to run to the parade route with

the banner, she suddenly realized that the banner was heavy and awkward.

It wrapped itself up and caught the wind. It was long, too. There’d be no way she’d get to the parade in time.

How would she ever make it?

Who likes to lose? Nobody, that’s who, but there are times when losing isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes, it means winning and “The Quickest Kid in Clarksville” shows your child how that works.

There’s a lot of sass and attitude inside this book, and charm all over: author Pat Zeitlow Miller’s main character has scads of it, in fact, but it’s a confident boldness that kids just can’t miss. Thanks to artwork by Frank Morri-

son, the fierceness never leaves Alta’s face, even when her new adversary steps into the ‘hood – a frenemy who’s surprisingly equal to Alta - leading to a show-down, an ultimate olive branch, and an ending that’ll make you smile.

CAN DO TIP Week #19 Strike a Pose! – Part 3 of 3

52 CAN DO’S: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions for each week of the year n part one of this series, we reviewed what posture is, and why it’s essential for good health.

Part two reviewed how to know when posture may pose a potential threat to your health while sitting in a chair and sleeping in bed.

This week I’ll review some corrective posture standing

wall exercises including one of my favorite core stability, tummy tightening exercises.

Wall stand: Stand with your back against the wall, feet shoulder width apart, knees soft and arms hang loose. Bring your shoulders back, but keep them relaxed. Don’t try to get your shoulder blades to touch the wall which may distress the natural curve in your lower back. Focus on your hips and pelvis and making sure they touch the wall.

You do this by squeezing (contracting) the muscles in your stomach and buttocks which will automatically align your spine and straighten your back. Practice staying in this pose for

2 min. and work your way up to 10 minutes a day.

Do you find that you put more weight on one foot than the other when standing? Sometimes I do. Avoid this by standing with equal weight on both feet and try this exercise.

Calf Lift: (1) Hold on to the back of a sturdy chair, counter or wall for balance;

place both feet together and squeeze your abdominal (tummy) muscles in toward your lower back. Breathe.

(2) Raise up (elevate) on the ball of your right foot for 2 seconds as you slightly bend the knee of the leg that is not elevated. Your elevated leg is straight, do not lock your knees. (3) Switch to do the same on the left foot.

Basically you are balancing your weight on one leg at a time while strengthening the muscles surrounding the knees, calf, ankle and foot.

Make sure your feet are pointing forward, not turned out. 3 sets of 10 - 20 repetitions per leg.

Hold for up to one minute.

Release and do the same on the opposite leg.

Take frequent movement breaks if you sit at a desk all day and be sure to ask your doctor and physical therapist which exercises you can do daily to relieve back, knee or foot pain, correct your posture and prevent injuries.

A BETTER JAMAICA LAUNCHES THE CARVER SCHOLARS PROGRAM

ith the goal of encouraging a love of science, technology, engineering and math among the communities youngest scholars – kindergarten students – A Better Jamaica has launched The Carver Scholars Program at P.S. 48Q. Modeled on and brought to the community via a successful collaboration with the NASA MUREP Aerospace Academy (MAA, formerly SEMAA) Program at York College, the Carver Scholars Program utilizes a handson, inquiry-based

approach to STEM. Research shows that students who participate in hands-on learning are more engaged and retain knowledge longer.

Says Carver Scholars Program Manager Kyshia Lawrie: “As a STEM professional, I’m always excited to share my love of science with others – especially with young people.”

According to Principal Pat Mitchell of P.S. 48: “It is critically important that we give our scholars opportunities that are similar to those afforded scholars in wealthier neighbor-

hoods. If we do not, then we have no right to expect the best from them later in their academic careers.”

Says Greg Mays, Founder of A Better Jamaica: “We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to bring STEM education to P.S. 48’s youngest scholars. The key to our program’s success is that it is 100% hands-on. It’s important that we give participants the opportunity to experience science, not just hear or read about it.”

Celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month at the Louis Armstrong House Museum in Queens the 60th Anniversary of Edward R. Murrow’s Satchmo the Great Break, April 23 – April 30.

This rare photo from the museum’s Ernie Anderson Collection depicts a major moment in Louis Armstrong’s career: his arrival in the Gold Coast of Africa (soon to become the independent nation of Ghana) in May 1956. Armstrong had never been to Africa before and when he arrived, his airplane was met by a mob of spectators, including thirteen trumpeters playing a traditional African song, “Sly Mongoose,” retitled “All for You, Louis” for the occasion. The photo depicts the moment Armstrong pulled out his horn to play along, a momentous meeting of the two

cultures. It was saved by Armstrong’s longtime publicist Ernie Anderson and was acquired by the Louis Armstrong House Museum in 2012. The photo has never been exhibited or published until now for Jazz Appreciation Month 2016.

It stands a special reminder of Armstrong’s power as America’s “Ambassador of Goodwill,” an appropriate message for Jazz Appreciation Month and International Jazz Day. Edward R. Murrow’s Satchmo the Great in partnership with the Museum of the City of New York. Satchmo the Great was created by famed broadcaster Edward R. Murrow who followed Louis Armstrong around the world, filming him in Paris, Sweden, Switzerland, England, and Africa, before returning back to New

York for an unforgettable performance of “St. Louis Blues” with the New York Philharmonic, conducted

by Leonard Bernstein. This film captures “Ambassador Satch” at his 1950s peak, entertaining 100,000 fans in the Gold Coast of Africa, playing his big hit “Mack the Knife” in London, and humorously explaining the

definition of a “cat” in a rollicking Paris interview with Murrow. Ricky Riccardi, Director of Research Collections at the Louis Armstrong House Museum, will introduce the film, which has not been commercially available since its original theatrical release in 1956.

Satchmo the Great will be screened on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Museum of the City of New York located at 1220 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10029 from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
