1. There are different types of leaders. As an entrepreneur, you should be able to apply the right one based on the situation you are encountering. are some less formal leaders who gain the respect of their members because of their expertise and years of experience in their field.

Some people have established themselves as authorities in their industry over the years.

Among such individuals include Robert Kiyosaki, known for his impeccable techniques in wealth creation, and Warren Buffet’s invest-

ment savvy methods.

Regardless of the type of leader you are, a combination of various leadership styles must be used to achieve profitable results.

Different authorities have identified a number of leadership styles that may be implemented in different business scenarios.

Lewin, for example, has stated leadership styles such as delegative, democratic and

authoritarian. As for Likert, there are four types including participative, consultative, benevolent authoritative and exploitive authoritative. Furthermore, Goleman defines six types, which are coaching, pacesetting, democratic, affiliative, commanding and visionary.

2. The style of leadership you use depends on the situation your business is ex-

periencing. There is no hard and fast rule, you should however take into account your team’s needs and their abilities, since these have a huge impact on whether your leadership technique will yield favorable results or not. For example, if the team is highly motivated and fully competent, the most appropriate style of leadership will be delegative and participative. However, if you are dealing with a situation where the staff shows no great commitment to the business, and is also not fully competent, then an authoritative style, combined with coaching and persuasion, is what is needed.

Individuals are likely to respond positively to leaders who are compelling, driven and focused, as they are capable of transforming any given situation into a breeding ground for success. Entrepreneurial heroes such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs have gained the public’s respect because of their strong vision, dedication to their field and resiliency to rise back after a serious fall.

Second Annual Harlem Eat-Up! Fetival May 19-May 22

arlier this month, Harlem EatUp! Honorary Chair President Bill Clinton and festival co-founders Marcus Samuelsson and Herb Karlitz announced the second annual Harlem EatUp! Festival will take place May 19 – 22, 2016 at various Harlem locations including two days at Morningside Park.

Auto Dealears are Charging Blacks and Hispanics Higher Interest Rates on Loans

n recent months, this column has reported on a series of settlements reached between banks and finance companies with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Department of Justice. All of the actions were taken to resolve claims of discrimination in auto lending.

To date, over $200 million in fines and restitution have been made to car buyers of color who paid higher interest rates than White borrowers – a violation of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. Additionally and as a condition of the settlements, defendants were required to change their lending practices by significantly reducing the amount of additional interest dealers can add to car loans for compensation.

Despite these developments, discriminatory practices in auto finance persist with some lenders and dealers. While law enforcement comes after discriminatory acts have already been commit-

ted, a new advocacy effort appeals for dealers to change their practices to prevent further discrimination in auto lending.

A group of consumer advocates and civil rights groups recently wrote Warren Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, to stop this discriminatory practice at his dealerships.

Last year, Berkshire Hathaway acquired the Van Tuyl Group, the largest privately-held dealership group in the nation. Renamed “Berkshire Hathaway Automotive,” the firm now operates 81 dealerships in 10 states, selling a range of domestic and foreign brands.

“While we welcome and applaud efforts of federal regulators to rein in this discriminatory practice, we urge responsible auto dealers to move immediately to end the practice on their own,” wrote the advocates.

“As you have publicly stated, we need to end discrimination in any number of settings. We are writing to you to respectfully request that you join us and openly condemn this discriminatory practice and help lead the way to a fair, open and transparent marketplace,” they continued.

When a consumer finances a car purchase through an auto dealer, the dealer has the discre-

tion to increase the interest rate offered by the lending institution and keep some or all of the difference as compensation. This difference between the interest rate priced for risk and the additional interest the dealer adds more compensation is known as dealer interest rate markup. It has also long been shown to result in higher interest rates for borrowers of color.

The 17-member coalition calling on Buffett to act includes the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, League of United Latin American Citizens, NAACP, National Consumer Law Center, National Urban League, and the Center for Responsible Lending among others.

The joint appeal also acknowledged the influential opposition faced in fighting for fair lending in auto finance.

“Unfortunately, the nation’s largest auto dealer trade association, the National Auto Dealers Association, has responded with a campaign to defend this discriminatory practice, jeopardizing the good will that auto dealers may have in their communities,” said the coalition. “As you have said, ‘it takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.’ As a leader in the financial sector…[Y]our leadership

would have a market-wide impact.”

Ranked by Forbes as the nation’s second wealthiest billionaire – surpassed only by Bill Gates – Mr. Buffett built a solid reputation for astute investing and major deals that grew Berkshire Hathaway into a multinational firm with more than 90 businesses owned and additional investments in corporations such as American Express, Coca-Cola, IBM and Wells Fargo.

Beyond Buffett, the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) and its allies have also called on regulators to end the practice of dealer interest rate markup.

“More than two decades of evidence that dealer interest rate markup leads to discrimination is enough,” said Chris Kukla, an executive vice president at CRL. “Consumers of color continue to pay more for car loans than White borrowers. The law is clear: every consumer is to be treated fairly and equally – not sometimes, but all of the time.”

he weather is getting warm and the housing market is heating up just as fast! Within the next few weeks there will be several open houses to attend. Prospective home buyers with pre-approval letters in their hands will be in pursuit of available properties in Harlem.

From every indication, the competition for purchasing property will be extreme this year, which will undoubtedly push already exorbitant home values even higher. The demand for housing still is far greater than the supply making it even a more competitive market. There is no use complaining about getting priced out, if you want to buy in Harlem be prepared to pay market values.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you are going to be successful in the home buying process: (1) Attend a Home Buyer Education Workshop. The workshop will equip you to understand the process and prepare for unexpected challenges you will face. You will need to assemble a team of professionals to assist you through the process. (2) Make sure you are ‘mortgage ready.’ This means having an adequate amount of money saved for the down payment and closing costs. A safe estimate is to have at least $2025K available. Sellers will know that you are serious about purchasing and will be far more receptive when they realized you have already started the mortgage process.

(4) Do your research to determine on home values in specific neighborhoods. Most appraised home values in Harlem are high, making sellers reluctant to accept less than the full asking price.

ublishers and leaders from the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), a trade group of more than 200 Black-owned media companies, and from the 400-plus member National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) recently held a historic three-day summit in Washington, D.C. that featured an all-star roster of speakers, meetings on Capitol Hill, and the enshrinement of the late Gerri Warren into The Gallery of Distinguished Black Publishers.

“I think we had a very productive week,” said

NNPA Chair and Washington Informer Publisher Denise Rolark Barnes.

NNPA Foundation Chair Al McFarlane called the meeting between the two minority trade groups historic.

“Our presence here acknowledges a broad and rich historic relationship between African and Latino communities,” said McFarlane.

NAHP President Martha Montoya quoted best-selling author Sarah MacLean, who said the best partnerships aren’t dependent on a mere common goal, but on a shared path to equality, desire, and no small amount of passion.

“That sentiment was very clear to both organizations and this joint event will allow the leadership of the NAHP and the NNPA to engage corporate decision makers and influential regulatory and political leaders to encourage advertising and financial support for member publications as well as advocate for policies that benefit our communities and members,” Montoya said.

“From the very first publication it was crystal clear that our publishers were both simultaneously prodigious entrepreneurs and courageous freedom fighters,” Chavis said.

Rolark Barnes acknowledged that the publishers and business owners of the Black press in America came together by faith.

“Our journey of faith began with two free men, Samuel E. Cornish and John B. Russwurm, who laid the first stone on the path we follow by publishing the nation’s first African-American newspaper, Freedom’s Journal, on March 16, 1827 in New York,” she said. “Their articles, editorials, cartoons, sermons, bios and advertisements included arguments for the abolishment of slavery and the expressed pride in the accomplishment of the African-American community.”

The week’s activities kicked off with an NNPA Foundation Board meeting at the W Hotel that was fol-

lowed by a special luncheon.

NAHP also kicked off the week with a board meeting at the National Press Club and a chairman’s reception hosted

by Fusion for both organizations was held at Univision Communications.

On Thursday, March 10, McFarlane, Rolark Barnes and Chavis hosted the Hall of Fame enshrinement at Howard University as the NAHP held an event regarding legislative policy at the Press Club. NAHP scheduled a meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch while Chavis reached out to Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton who held a press conference with both organizations on Capitol Hill on Friday to appeal for a study on how much money federal agencies are spending on advertising in the Black and Latino press and to advocate for D.C. statehood.

That night, the 2016 Torch Awards honored Dr. Lonnie Bunch, Baltimore City Attorney Marilyn Mosby, Sterling Premier Group CEO Thomas A. Moorehead, Retired Major General Charles F. Bolden Jr., and CEO of the National Co-

The groups also announced a “Get Out to Vote” initiative.

Chavis noted that today’s Black-owned and Hispanic-owned media companies exist during a propitious time in the publishing industry.

Innovation and the use of technology will continue to be key components of strategic plans for the next decade as NNPA strives to financially sustain its media and publishing businesses, he said.

“Yet, we know for certain that the profitability of our businesses is also directly linked to the overall improvement of the quality of life in the communities that we serve and represent,” he said.

Chavis continued: “We are committed to working to address the critical issues and challenges that confront the industry at-large, as well as to ensure that equity of consideration is given to our member publishers in advertisements, media buys, partnerships, sponsorships and other business opportunities.”

Free Foot Screenings Fridays at The Foot Center of New York

he Foot Center of New York, a health resource for the residents of Harlem for over 100 years, has announced a series of free foot screenings beginning on Friday March 18. The screenings will occur on three Fridays – March 18, April 1 and April 8, from 9am to noon.

No appointments are needed and there are no insurance requirements.

The free screenings will be conducted by the experienced podiatrists who staff the center. Patients who need additional treatment or physical therapy can make appointments for further care there at the Foot Center. “We want to make

sure that residents who might have diabetes receive the foot care they need to avoid major complications down the road. We’re also focused on the full range of additional problems of the foot and ankle,” said Eunice Ramsey-Parker, DPM, MPH, Administrator of the Foot Center.

Let's Talk About Colon Cancer

arch is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder to all New Yorkers that the risk of colon cancer can be greatly reduced by getting a colonoscopy. In New York City, according to the New York Citywide Colon Cancer Control Coalition (C5), which includes the NYC Health + Hospitals, colorectal cancer is the second deadliest cancer, killing approximately 1,400 people each year.

If caught early, ninety percent of colorectal

cancers are curable.

It’s no surprise to me people don’t want to talk about colon cancer or worse, colonoscopies. However, as the Chief of Gastroenterology, I’ve seen firsthand how colonoscopies save lives. So we must talk about it. I strongly urge all New Yorkers 50 and older to get a colonoscopy once every 10 years.

Those with a family history of colorectal cancer should discuss with their physician whether they should be screened earlier.

I’m glad to say colon cancer awareness and the work of the C5 coalition in NYC has helped to close the disparity in colon cancer screening rates that exists in most other parts of the country among blacks, whites, Asians and Hispanics. In New York City, the colonoscopy screening rate is now the same across ethnic groups, this is great news!

The Gift of Prayer

believe that prayer is a gift given to us at birth, a gift that allows our thoughts to manifest into reality based on our faith.

When we pray who are we praying to? Most will say that we are praying to God for help, guidance and abilities. Over the centuries organized religion has confused the concept of prayer due to a confused concept of God. Wars are still being fought to prove whose God is the greatest. Man’s interpretation of God has all too often been used to determine when and how one prays. Many have

moved from a religious interpretation of God to a spiritual interpretation of God; making prayer more of an act of faith then a religious act.

A spiritual interpretation of God allows one to understand that God is no different than gravity there is no discrimination; if a Jew, a Muslim and a Christen jump off a roof the universal law of gravity will apply to each one, the unconditional love of God or the universal mind is no different. The ancient Egyptians considered God to be energy or The All. Modern science has proven that all things are energy and that energy is all things.

Ancient prophets consid-

ered the human body to be the Temple of God. Many of those prophets were put to death by the same people who then built temples to worship them.

In prayer the subconscious mind is considered to be the human connection to God or the mind of the universe. Joseph Murphy describes prayer in has book The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, this way: “Prayer is the synchronized, harmonious, and intelligent function of the conscious and subconscious levels of mind specifically directed for a definite purpose”.

Murphy goes on to say “In prayer you consciously

choose a certain idea, mental picture, or plan which you desire to experience.

You realize your capacity to convey this idea or mental image to your subconscious by feeling the reality of the state assumed. As you remain faithful in your mental attitude, your prayer will be answered”. The key word is faith.

In prayer one must have faith that they were created with a gift of thought manifestation. If you can allow yourself to believe that you have this ability your concept of prayer will change.

The most important thing to understand is that you have used this ability all your life.

The mental pictures that you convey to your subconscious based on your beliefs have often manifested in your life.

All too often many of our mental pictures have been based on fear and doubt rather than faith and compassion.

Prayer is an important self-healing tool. Any method which causes you to move from fear and doubt to faith and expectancy will heal”.

Prayer can not only be a tool for self-healing it can also be used as a vehicle to heal others. I am a living example of this and I would like to thank those who have sent me healing energy through their thoughts and prayers.

ou can’t judge a book by its cover.

Even so, we do it all the time: we see someone’s outside and think we know what’s inside. We base it on his looks, or his youthful indiscretions – things, as in the new book “Writing My Wrongs” by Shaka Senghor, that he may deeply regret.

Little James White wanted to be a doctor when he grew up.

Enveloped by the love of his parents, he was secure in the idea that he could maintain his honors status and do good for people in his Detroit community. But then his parents split, reconciled, and split again; his mother took her

frustrations out on him and she kicked him out of her house.

Jay was just “a little boy” of fourteen then, but it didn’t take long for someone to offer him a job selling cocaine at five dollars a “rock.” He started earning big money, wearing cool clothes, getting girls, smoking crack.

By seventeen, he’d been in trouble with the law and had been given many second chances. By eighteen, he’d been shot in the leg and foot.

By nineteen, he was in prison for shooting another man, killing him.

In his first six weeks in County Jail, Jay saw it all: rape, robbery, beat-downs, murder. He learned the “law

of the jungle” and knew that he could never let small disrespects slide. It was a whole new world, but a sentence of up to forty-two years for firearm possession and murder put him in another universe.

Years later, transferred to various prisons within the state and carrying a new name and a new assault charge, Shaka Senghor promised himself repeatedly that he would change, only to have it beaten back by prison life and the deep anger and guilt he carried. Finally, mid-way through a four-anda-half year stint in ad-seg, he “took a long and painful look” at himself and equipped his cell “like a classroom,” reconnecting with the Black history

he loved and the religious studies he craved.

“But the real changes,” he says, “came when I started keeping a journal.”

I’m glad he did that. You will be, too, once you’ve started “Writing My Wrongs,” but don’t think for a minute that this is an easy book to read.

One expects passages of brutality in a book about prison, but author Shaka Senghor takes it a step beyond, to something of nightmares or movies.

That he was moved from prison to prison makes the chaos even keener; prisoners, says Senghor, sometimes lose track of time and readers could be forgiven for the same. Enter the maelstrom from the safety

“Writing My Wrongs” may be right for a certain kind of book group. For sure, it’s something every young person should absolutely read.

Look at it this way, a

vast amount of our lives is spent standing, sitting in a chair and sleeping. The bad news is, these three activities are prime opportunities for poor posture habits that if not checked, can lead to bone and joint destabilization, tissue trauma, inflammation, and altered neuromuscular control, causing to muscle imbalance and ultimately injury. The good news? It’s usually treatable with the consistent practice of a few simple exercises (although “simple” is relative depending on your posture impairment).

So how do you know when your posture poses a potential threat to your health? Poor posture such as slouching, hunching

shoulders, forward tilting head, overarching the lower back while sitting etc., can add tremendous pressure to your neck, shoulders and lower back. This causes a constriction in the flow of blood and oxygen to the muscles. Leaning on one side of an arm chair shifts the shoulder girdle out of neutral alignment. Transferring the bulk of your weight to favor one leg over the other while standing puts undue strain on knee and ankle. Sleeping too often on only one side of the body can put strain on the shoulder and on the pelvis causing pain to the lower back. This is because the top leg will usually overlap the bottom leg and fall to

the bed, putting pressure on the pelvis.

Good posture is essential to reducing neck, back, and knee and foot pain.

When you sit or stand with good posture it increases oxygen flow by 30% (Huffington Post) throughout the body including the muscles, spine, joints, nerves and blood vessels --creating a healthier, more structurally sound body that can stand up to a variety of daily functional tasks and activities. Breathing properly also improves your brain function, energy level, mood and an overall sense of feeling confident.

Special Black History Month at Lincoln Hospital

The Lincoln Black History Month Celebration at NYC Health + Hospitals / Lincoln took place at the end of February. A celebration took place and a lovely booklet was created: “History Makers: Bronx and Black and Beyond” to review the bios of 9 very important “Black Firsts” - honorees invited to Lincoln throughout the year. Seven accepted our invitation. Five were honored during Black History Month.

Senator Klein Donates Thousands of Shamrock Cookies to Parade Marchers In Honor of St Patrick's Day

Brooklyn Best Honors Salutes Kings County's Finest

Brooklyn’s Best Honors March 2016 honorees include civic leader Henry L. Butler; husband and wife business owners Lenworth and Maxine Stephenson; and Brooklyn’s Best Honors very own Art & Entertainment professional Darryl Copeland.

Bedford-Stuyvesant’s own Henry L. Butler serves his community proudly. As Community Board 3’s Dis-

trict Manager, Butler monitors the delivery of community services from various city agencies and plays a vital role in preparing the Board’s annual capital and expense budget. He currently serves as President of the Vanguard Independent Democratic Club, and Chairs Brooklyn Branch NAACP Labor Committee.

In 2006, Butler became a Block President and member of CB3 serving as its VP of the Police, Fire & Safety Committee and Financial Secretary before being elected Chairman in 2008 where he has successfully procured funding for the Utica Ave train station Elevator and reconstruction of the Nostrand Ave thoroughfare. His commitment

to serve others earned him a congressional merit award and the “People’s Community Empowerment Hero” award. An enterprising entrepreneur, Butler’s most important role to date has been husband to his wife Lalena and father to his two boys, Kevin and Miles.

Bedford Stuyvesant’s own Maxine and Lenworth Stephenson are the enterprising force behind Zeen Incorporated, a cost-effective human resources management and recruitment consulting agency that aids small businesses integrate solutions while enhancing organizational culture and mitigate risk. The home business was founded in 2010 by the husband and wife duo and has helped

a variety of organizations in such areas as job placement, recruitment, policy development, talent acquisition management, training and other areas. Lenworth, ZEEN Inc. Founder & CEO graduated from Pace University and holds a MSA from Central Michigan University in Human Resource Administration.

Chef Operation Office Maxine received her BA in Political Science from Pace University.

Brooklyn’s own Darryl Copeland began his musical journey singing in a choir at the tender age of 7. By the time he was 10, he was performing solo and by the age 14 became the choir director. After graduating high school he

joined the US Navy, which afforded him access to the world. Upon returning home from active duty, Copeland moved to New York City and emerged himself in the world of entertainment where he has shared the stage with a variety of contemporary artist and later performing in and written numerous off Broadway productions. He is a sought after vocal coach, teacher and community leader.

However, he never forgetting his gospel root and as an ordained elder at Refuge Church of Christ, Copeland provide bereavement, general council and advocate for black veteran.

AM – 4:00 PM; the Jamaica Bay branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, located at 9727 Seaview Avenue in Canarsie, on Mondays from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM as well as Thursdays from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM; the Coney Island branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, located at 1901 Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island, on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM; and the Red Hook branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, located at 7 Wolcott Street in Red Hook, on Tuesdays from 1:00 PM –
