When I first moved here there were a limited number of eat in retaurants and places to enjoy entertainment other than the Apollo theater, National Black theater and a couple of nightclubs. That has all changed. Now there are hundereds of eat in restaurants in Harlem.

Many of them offer entertainment, happy hour and weekend brunch .

“They tell us that you don’t have press conferences where you serve food, but this is Harlem style. We could not come Harlem style without serving food,” Williams said, acknowledging Sylvia’s Restaurant President Kenneth Woods. A brunch-style buffet featuring fried chicken, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and more was served to patrons in attendance.

Congressman Rangel and the Greater Chamber of Commerce spearheaded this endeavor, and Williams introduced the veteran Congressman to the crowd. “I am so very, very proud to be here this morning. Yes, 46 years in Congress but 86 years in Harlem,” Congressman Rangel said to a loud ovation from those in attendance. “Harlem is building a bridge to Cuba bringing peo-

The Harlem/Havana Music and Cultural Festival will take place as a highlight of Harlem Week from Monday, August 15 – Sunday, August 21, 2016. The second part of the festival will take place in February 2017, with a contingent of artists from many walks of life going to Havana, Cuba.

“We thought that it made sense to go to Havana in February,” Williams joked, in reference to Havana’s summer weather year-round.

Some of the Cuban artists that will be in Harlem include the Latin Jazz performers Ce-

sar Lopez and Habana Ensemble and Jorge Luis Pacheco y Su Grupo. The Havana-based JJ Folkloric Compania will represent the area of dance, while Arte y Moda Cubano will showcase fashion. Visual artist Eduardo Roca Salazar, nicknamed “Choco” will also bring his talents to Harlem.

With Historic, 26-Hour Sit-In on House Floor, Members of the Congressional Black Caucus Vow to Continue Efforts to Address Gun Violence in America

BC Chairman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) released the following statement following a historic 26-hour sit-in on the House Floor to protest Speaker Ryan and House Republicans’ refusal to allow a vote on bipartisan legislation to address gun violence. During the sit-in, House Republicans recessed the House of Representatives without bringing gun

violence prevention legislation up for a vote.

“Even as Republicans tried to shut down the Floor and shut out our voices, our historic 26-hour sit-in delivered a stirring message from the American people: No Bill, No Break,” said Chairman Butterfield.

“House Republicans can no longer turn a deaf ear to the clear will of the American people: we will not tolerate

more moments of silence for the victims of gun violence without action to prevent the next tragedy. Sit or stand, members of the Congressional Black Caucus will not rest, and we will not be silent, until Congress has acted to disarm hate.”

f you’re in the market to buy a home, today’s historically low average mortgage rates are something to celebrate. Mortgage rates play a significant role in how much home you can afford -- and when rates are low, a home that was once unaffordable may now be within reach.

$1,237. Today, that same monthly payment would only be $908. Experts say for this reason, now is a great time to buy.

MACY’s 4th OF JULY FIREWORKS WILL TAKE PLACE FROM TWO LOCATIONS ON THE EAST RIVER

ayor Bill de Blasio and Macy’s announced that on Monday, July 4, the nation’s largest Independence Day pyrotechnic display – the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks® will once again rumble to life over New York City, igniting the skyline over the East River and marking its 40th anniversary as an annual tradition.

The show, which begins at approximately 9:25 PM, will be fired from two locations along the shorelines of Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, giving more than three million spectators front row views to the explo-

sive action in the night sky.

Set to commemorate the nation’s 240th birthday with an unparalleled spectacle of color, light and sound, the 40th Anniversary Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks will feature more than 52,000 shells and effects during a 25-minute tightly choreographed spectacle.

Designed and executed

by Macy’s, the show will be centered in midtown on four barges positioned between 23rd and 37th Streets and from one double-barge positioned below the Brooklyn Bridge in the Seaport district.

Jones - actor, director and activist – explained “this event celebrates 48 years of realizing the mission of NBT: use the arts and entrepreneurship to own an autonomous space, producing transformational experiences that help to shift the inaccuracy around Black cultural identity by telling authentic stories of black lifestyle”.

The six Awards were given to outstanding recipients by equally outstanding presenters, all coming together in this magical evening punctuated by passionate performances by

Rhonda Ross and Olamide Faison, to celebrate unconditional love, family values, community support, social engagement and social justice through the arts.

Sade Lythcott, CEO of the National Black Theatre and daughter of Dr. Teer, presented the first award to High Priest Baba Araba Ifayemi Elebuibon, poet, performing artist, playwright and founder of Ancient Philosophy International, Òsogbo, Nigeria, a center dedicated to teaching African traditional religion and the performing arts.

The Awards to acknowledge “Being a Visionary and Catalyst for Institution Building” were presented by Ayodele Moore to Shirley Faison, who was moved to tears.

Shirley has 42 years of ex-

perience in the entertainment industry as a producer, director and executive director of theatre; by Ade’ Faison to Raoul Roach on behalf of SANKOFA, a social justice organization founded by Harry Belafonte and now supported, thanks to Gina Belafonte and Raoul’s efforts, by today’s most celebrated artists in collaboration with grassroots partners to promote justice, peace, and equality.

The Adetunde Samuel Award was presented

by Marvette Britto (Britto PR Agency) to Stephen Byrd and Alia Jones-Harvey founders of FRONT ROW PRODUCTIONS,

the only African American lead producers currently on Broadway, for bringing a unique brand of diversity to Broadway and London’s West End. Talvin Wilks presented the Pioneer Award to Paul Carter Harrison, award winning playwright/director/theatre theorist whose work has been produced and published in both Europe and the United States.

Lastly, Woodie King, Jr, Founder and producing director of New Federal Theatre presented the Pioneer award to Ebony Jo-Ann. award winning actress and acclaimed vocalist.

he National Black Theatre, celebrated the birth date of Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, Founder. They held the eighth annual TEER Spirit Awards to honor and recognize individuals or organizations working to support and elevate the theatrical community. The awards honor individuals who “Unleash the Power Of Spirit” in the community, in which they live, work and serve, exemplifying the spirit that guided the three pioneers within NBT’s history: Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, NBT’s Founding Visionary, Adetunde Samuel, a charismatic producer who headed NBT’s award-winning Theatre Arts Program, and Fredrica L. Teer, an institution builder who conceived and organized the foundation that made the idea of National Black Theatre a reality. The Teer Spirit Awards was inaugurated in 2008 after the passing of Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, the founder of the National Black Theatre.

Bradhurst Merchant’s Association (BMA) Hosts Annual Awards Reception

he Bradhurst Merchants Association honored its own at its annual awards reception that recognizes the brightest in the local business community.

The reception, held June 23 at MIST Harlem, honors the men and women working to create opportunities for entrepreneurs and in growing small businesses in the Bradhurst Avenue commercial corridor.

Honoree Christian Damiba, director of NYC Business Solutions Centers, received the President’s Award for his commitment to helping the area’s small business owners. Association president LaChena Clark – who is also a local business owner – said he is a conduit that links local business with all types of opportunities in education, networking and economic development.

“He is very active in the community in making businesses better,” she said.

Damiba said he was “humbled” by the honor, but the winner refused to take all the credit.

“It’s really a recognition of the work of my team,” he said. “The city has so many good initiatives for small businesses. My job is to connect these services to businesses in Harlem.”

Angie Hancock, whose ubiquitous, orange “Experience Harlem” booklets are well known around town, was honored with the Business of the Year award.

“I thought, instead of us begging for someone to write about us, why don’t we tell our own stories?”

Keynote speaker Greg Bishop, the Commissioner of New York City’s Department of Small Businesses, said his work in supporting the growth of small businesses couldn’t be done without organizations like the Bradhurst Merchants Association.

“They are on the ground,” he said, “so they understand the local small business issues.”

John Banks, III gave the audience an overview of real estate in NYC and gave some specifics on NYCS tax policies, city planning, zoning, and land use. He pointed out some of the benefits and problems associated with 421A (a tax abatement

encouraging residential development) and his commitment to seek a solution. He emphasized Harlem being a great transit hub rich with history and culture along with diversity and population. Harlem has a lot to offer and the ongoing growth with the development of projects such as Columbia University, the Whole Foods site and others is expected to continue. He expressed that “Harlem is Happening” and the place to be.

The BID elected members to the Board of Directors. Jonelle Procope, Chair of BID Nominations and President of the Apollo Theater presented a slate that re-elect Willie Walker (Harlem State Office Building) and adds two new commercial tenants, Shermange Glover (Banana Republic Factory Store) and Charles Jackson (Metro PCS).

Betty Aquino, BID Treasurer and V.P., Retail District Sales Manager at

Carver Bank, presented the budget for the next year beginning July 1, 2016 and noted that the BID would not be increasing the assessments on the owners for this year.

he 125th Street Business Improvement District (BID) hosted its 23rd annual meeting on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at the World Famous Apollo Theater. Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) President, John Banks, III, who was appointed in 2014 and considered one of most influential New Yorkers, was the keynote speaker.

There were 200+ attendees at the meeting. Congressman Charles Rangel congratulated the BID on all of its work and recognized the contribution it makes to the restoration of the Harlem community.

He spoke about stabilization and the role Harlem would have around housing and his desire to keep Harlem the Center of African American culture. Harlem has Emerged as a Major Player in New York City’s Restaurant Scene

A

lthough historically known for being a soul food mecca from well-known restaurants like Sylvia’s, Harlem has morphed into a full-service foodie destination, catering to nearly every palette and price point.

More than 50 new restaurants have opened between 96th and 171st Streets in the last 20 years, transforming swathes of the neighborhood, bringing in new jobs and new flavors.

Case in point: last month, thousands of people came uptown for the second annual Harlem EatUp! Festival, a two-day fete devoted exclusively to Harlem’s restaurant scene. It was where Harlem’s “King Of Fried Chicken” Charles Gabriel, of Charles’ Pan Country Fried Chicken, served up his signature American comfort food staples.

Twenty years ago, Frederick Douglass Boulevard between West 110th and West 125th streets was littered with abandoned storefronts.

Today, it’s arguably Harlem’s restaurant row, with options including Bier International, a

German beer garden, Italian and Spanish wine bar Vinateria and French-Senegalese staple Les Ambassades.

Sister’s Cuisine has served Jamaican dishes for the past 16 years on 124th and Madison. Celebrity Chef Marcus Samuelson has brought a lot of attention to the Harlem Restaurant scene with his restaurant Red Rooster. Samuelson is also one of the founders of the sucessful food promotion - Harlem EatUp, which promotes many of the restaurants in Harlem.

Casual eatery Manna’s offers soul food favorites at its three locations on Lenox Ave, 125th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd, while Hot Pot Under De Tree brings a Caribbean influence to upper Harlem with dishes like jerk chicken and braised oxtails. And Blvd Bistro, housed in a historic Lenox Avenue brownstone, is known for its special weekend blueberry pancake brunch, prosecco and iced tea infused cocktails and homemade biscuits with cinnamon butter.

How Old Are Your Running Shoes?

ummer’s here and the time is right … for getting on your feet!

Lots of people wait for the warmer weather to start running and walking for health or

pleasure. I really applaud the desire to get moving. Before you start though, ask your doctor if you can.

Then, there are a few more considerations.

First, how fit are your feet? You might want to consult with a podiatrist, who will consider the health of your feet as well as what your gait says about your body’s mechanics. He/she may prescribe custom orthotics (inserts) for you to improve those

mechanics and protect your feet. The podiatrist will consider: whether you have a high or low arch and therefore how much cushioning you might need; if you pronate (that is, if your foot rotates incorrectly) when you walk; if you already have Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, or another injury.

A podiatrist is also a good source of advice about the type of shoe you need and what brands will work for

you. Whether you are walking or running, you will need a shoe specifically designed for that sport.

If you have already been running or walking, the time is actually always right for looking at your shoes and determining if they are too worn to keep using. Wearing worn-out shoes can lead to injuries of the feet, ankles and/or knees. Are the shoes worn on the bottom and where? Look at the outer sole – does

it look worn, have wrinkles, or is disintegrating at the edges?

Are the heels worn down on one side? Is the inner sole so compressed from wear that it has no spring? All of these are signs that you need new shoes; there are others signs to look for. Most runners have personal markers that signal when they should replace their shoes: e.g., if they’ve been worn for 200, 300, or 500 miles; if they look/smell bad,

etc. And don’t forget the socks – they should be new enough so they don’t slip and bunch around your toes.

a number of reasons,” says Dr. Ronald Shapiro, medical director of Physicians Technology LLC. “They may have had an injury. They may have arthritis. Sometimes just sitting too long at the computer without a break can lead to shoulder problems.”

Although anyone can experience chronic pain, an NIH study showed that women, older people and non-Hispanics were more likely to report pain. Asians were less likely.

Shapiro says there are a number of options patients can turn to for treating pain. Some of those include: • Pain-relieving medication. Both over-the-

counter and prescription medications are used by millions of Americans.

Those medications do provide relief, although the Centers for Disease Control recently urged physicians to cut down on the amount of opioids they prescribe because of the risk that patients can become addicted to these narcotics, as well as the alarming increased incidence of fatal prescription-medication overdose.

• Physical therapy. A good physical therapist can do wonders for helping to alleviate a patient’s pain and assist them in achieving a more active lifestyle than they might have imagined. The downside is that the cost

of those weekly visits can add up.

•Complementary health approaches. The NIH study says that many people turn to such alternative approaches to pain relief as yoga, massage and meditation. The NIH says those may be able to help with managing pain and other symptoms that are not consistently addressed by prescription drugs and other conventional treatments.

• Te c h n a c e u t i c a l s .

Technology is emerging as an alternative option for temporarily relieving pain, especially as a replacement for medication. Shapiro, for example, has been involved in research in that area and co-invented with

Because it’s also a smart computer, the device assesses the condition of the joint and delivers a targeted digital treatment to temporarily relieve pain. A variety of ailments can be treated with such technaceuticals, including arthritis, general joint pain, knee pain, tennis elbow and rotator-cuff injuries, among many others.

“The opportunity is out there to improve the quality of life for anyone who suffers from chronic pain,” Shapiro says. “A person shouldn’t feel that

they just have to endure it. Whether it’s technology, physical therapy or something else, they have options that can make their day-to-day living a lot better.”

R

ecently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the rate of new cases of diabetes in the United States declined by about 20 percent from 2008 to 2014. This represents the first sustained decrease in diagnosis since the disease emerged as a major threat to public health over the

course of the past two decades.

But the fight is far from over, especially for communities of color.

While the CDC report is good news regarding an overall decline in diabetes rates, it did not acknowledge a significant change in prevalence among the African-American community, which continues to be far more vulnerable to the disease than other racial and ethnic groups.

Consider the data: Black adults are about twice as likely to have diagnosed diabetes as non-Hispanic White adults.

They are also twice as likely to die from the disease. What’s more, African-Americans are more than three times as likely to suffer from health complications related to diabetes, such as lower-limb amputation and kidney failure.

It’s clear that the African-American community is shouldering an unequal burden when it comes to diabetes treatment, prevention, research and education. And so the CDC’s announcement—while welcome news—does not signal that the fight against the disease is over. There is more work to do to not only overcome the diabetes epidemic, but also eliminate the healthcare disparities that disproportionately plague our community.

To do that, we must redouble our efforts to create a culture of health in African-American communities—one that removes the stigma of seeking care and helps our neighbors and family members access the opportunities provided under the Affordable Care Act. Healthcare.gov is now available for the open enrollment period through January

31, 2016, and taking advantage of the options available today is the first step our community can take to reclaim Black health and wellness.

But coverage alone isn’t enough to guarantee better health outcomes for African-Americans. Healthcare providers have a responsibility to deliver inclusive, quality care that considers the needs of the whole patient.

That means providing patients with relevant, reliable information that empowers and engages them to make choices for a healthier life.

The truth is that all healthcare providers should strive to provide an environment where no one is excluded—where everyone has access to compassionate, personalized care and the opportunity for better health regardless of their struggles or station in life. And that’s the

right model for all providers.

Because we must get to know our patients on an individual, holistic level—not prescribe a one-size-fits-all approach—if we intend to truly improve their health outcomes.

Finally, our policymakers, civic leaders and all who have a stake in the health of our community must address the social determinants that influence and widen the diabetes equity gap.

For years, we’ve known that diabetes can be prevented and managed with healthy lifestyle changes such as exercise and good nutrition. But it’s difficult to go for a run around the block when you live in a highcrime neighborhood. It’s challenging to find fresh fruits and vegetables when you live in a food desert. We must marshal our communities around the policies that affect our envi-

ronment’s ability to support a culture of health and wellness.

Diabetes has been—and will continue to be—a major public health issue in the U.S. We’re making progress in the fight against the disease, but we need to do more to address the disparities felt by the African-American population. With a focused effort from members of the Black community, policymakers, civic leaders and healthcare providers to create a culture of health, deliver compassionate, personalized care and advance the policies that make healthy lifestyles viable, I am confident we can curb the diabetes epidemic for good, for everyone.

The Legend of Tehuti

uring the golden area of ancient Egypt, known then as Kemet, the knowledge and use of astronomy, architecture, geometry, and medicine created achievements that still baffle the finest minds of today. During this time there was a scholar/teacher who historians believe was the foundation of this advanced wisdom. His name was Tehuti or Thoth. The Greeks called him Hermes.

Alexandria the Great’s conquest of Persia, Egypt and India created one massive empire where all the great minds went to study in

the Egyptian city of Alexandria. The work of Tehuti was studied and preserved in the great library of Alexandria. It is said that the library housed over half a million scrolls; a great deal of Tehuti’s philosophy inspired some of the greatest intellectual achievements of the ancient world.

The Christian Roman Empire viewed the knowledge stored in the library of Alexandria as pagan philosophies and eventually destroyed much of the scholarly documents stored in the library. Many of the students of Tehuti were Greek, which is why Tehuti was renamed by the Greeks to Hermes and much of the work that

survived the library of Alexandria was classified as Hermetic philosophy.

The teachings of Hermes was a well-guarded secret for centuries. You had to be initiated into a secret society or organization to have access to it. Some of the world’s greatest minds were influenced by the writings of Tehuti/Hermes; Leonardo da Vinci, Newton, Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, Copernicus, Benjamin Franklin and Carl Jung to name a few.

In 1908 the “Kybalion” published by the “Three Initiates” (who were initiates of a secret society and never gave their names) was one of the first publications that ex-

erbs can heal virtually any imbalance or ailment we incur. The leaves of damiana have one of the strongest reputations of building enhanced sexual activity.

Traditionally, damiana has been linked to disorders affecting men, largely due to its strong testosterogenic quality. remember a while back I heard Bishop T.D. Jakes of the Potters House preach a sermon that still resonates with me to this day. The gist of it was that a good portion of the Bible was written from a jail cell.

I’m pretty sure his overall message had something to do with the church’s outreach ministry, which I understand to be significant. What struck me then and remains with me now is the reality of God’s Word and direction coming from the steadfast faith of those imprisoned. What is it about

being a believer, a walking, talking believer that somehow frightens those in power so much, that a jail cell is an inevitable and practical answer?

History suggests that professing one’s belief in Jesus Christ as Lord can literally be a death sentence. The Bible teaches us that eventually our belief will be put to the test. The thing is have you ever wondered why God’s teachings are so feared by those who believe in other religions, or no religion at all?

At one time I used to say Jesus’ message made so much sense that even if

He didn’t exist, we should invent Him. Now that I’m saved, I guess you could say I’m a candidate for institutional oppression.

If you’re a believer, there are things in this world that want you dead. The odd thing about what Bishop Jakes said was and is that I don’t view myself as a threat to anyone based on my belief in one God, the Holy Trinity and the truth of Jesus Christ.

But the world in which I live does. I suppose a larger issue might be have I done anything or said anything that should land me in jail; if jail is defined as that spiritual place that

present day Sadducees and Pharisees want to send people like you and me? If I haven’t said or done anything, then maybe I better get going, stir some things up. In their day, the apostles, Paul and others were indeed looked upon as threats to the socalled establishment. That meant governments and principalities, as well as the church hierarchy of that day.

If nothing else, I don’t think anyone would argue that on His worst day, Jesus was the quintessential revolutionary. It still amazes me how such principles of uncondition-

al universal love for humankind got him killed.

And then it always hits me that this philosophy will ultimately attack and undermine entrenched institutional power of all kinds especially that contained within the church.

That’s when I realize that if you are a believer in Christ, you are most certainly a threat to man.

Man craves power and Christianity abdicates all power to Jehovah. We stand as representatives of that truth and stand trial everyday with the world as our judge and jury, or so it sometimes appears. That explains

that target on the backs of believers throughout history and should remind us all that there is indeed a target on all of our backs.

It’s a light, a very bright light illuminating the darkness that surrounds many a non-believer. All I can encourage you to do in the face of all this is to stay the course and know our defense attorney has already argued this case.

The prosecuting attorney has already lost. So when you’re alone in your cell, remember this battle you’re in is over. The verdict is in. We win. Be humble in your victory.

“Lincoln and Kennedy: A Pair to Compare” REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

Y

ou’re not the only kid in the world who likes ice

cream.

Lots of kids do; everybody loves a good treat.

Other people like biking, puppies, candy, and video games, too. You’re unique, but you have a lot in common with a lot of people and in the new book “Lincoln and Kennedy: A Pair to Compare” by Gene Barretta, you’ll see how two great men were alike, a century apart.

When you first take a look at Abraham Lincoln and John Kennedy, they’re just two ordinary Presidents. Lincoln was a

Republican, Kennedy was a Democrat. Lincoln was born in 1809, Kennedy was born in 1917. Lincoln’s family was poor; Kennedy’s was definitely not.

So far, so different, right?

Not so fast.

Both men were military leaders: Lincoln in the Black Hawk War, and Kennedy in World War II. Both were elected to the House of Representatives, Lincoln in 1846 and Kennedy in 1946. They were nominated for the Vice Presidency 100 years apart, but neither won their election.

Lincoln and his wife, Mary, lost a child before moving into the White

House, and then again after their move. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, lost a child before moving into the White House, and then again after their move.

Wow, huh? Just wait….

Lincoln absolutely hated slavery, and did everything he could to stop it; that’s why he was a Republican, since that party wanted to end slavery. After the Civil War, Lincoln met with Frederick Douglass, who knew Lincoln was “committed to the cause.”

Kennedy hated Jim Crow laws, and wanted to give African Americans equal rights. He met with Martin Luther King, Jr., who knew

Kennedy was committed to the cause. In 1963, Kennedy presented a Civil Rights bill to Congress.

Lincoln was shot on a Friday in Ford’s Theatre; Kennedy was shot on a Friday while riding in a Ford Lincoln. Andrew Johnson took over the Presidency when Lincoln died; Lyndon Johnson took over the Presidency when Kennedy died.

Today, if you stand at Kennedy’s grave, you can see the Lincoln Memorial.

For about as long as there’s been an internet, most of what’s inside this book has been on it. That doesn’t mean, of course, that your child’s seen these eerie coincidences before, so “Lincoln and Kennedy:

Starting with, and mixing in, balancing differences amidst the similarities, author Gene Barretta shows kids how history can be a weird and wonderful thing, especially when it comes to these two influential Presidents. Barretta doesn’t try to make things light; he states facts in straightforward, simple language, allowing his illustrations to bring the smiles here. Though I thought the comparison ends with a whimper, it quickly snaps back with audience-pleasing tidbits that kids will love.

Though this may look like a children’s picture book, the terminology inside is meant more for older readers, up to

Sixth Grade. For them – and maybe even for you – “Lincoln and Kennedy: A Pair to Compare” is a nice treat.

Activists Rally to Save Manhattan’s Underground Railroad House

T

he backers of Manhattan’s only documented stop on the Underground Railroad ripped its owner’s plan to defile the historic landmark.

Local politicians, history buffs and historical preservation officials gathered on Juneteenth to save the 1846 row house at 339 West 29th Street, the home of the Hopper-Gibbons abolitionist family, who sheltered enslaved Africans fleeing bondage in the South.

With cries of “Shame!

Shame!,” the supporters rallied outside the historic brownstone to urge the city not to allow owner Nick Mamounas to keep an illegally-built fifth floor addition on the house, a move

the preservationists said desecrated the historic site because it obscures a roof the family used to escape an angry mob that set the house on fire during New York City’s Draft Riots of 1863.

“Why isn’t this guy in jail?” NYC Councilman Corey Johnson – whose district includes the Un-

derground Railroad house – said at the rally. “Enough is enough. The city needs to come down with its full force of power to stop this from happening.”

Besides sheltering runaway slaves, the family hosted abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass at the house.

“This building is special, sacred and unique in Manhattan,” Fern Luskin, the co-chair of the Friends of the Hopper-Gibbons House, said.

In 2010, Mamounas built the fifth floor “penthouse” on top of the landmarked Chelsea rowhouse, and kept on building even after the city withdrew the building permit. Two years ago, the city’s Board of Standards and Appeals decided that Mamounas had to get approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission to keep the fifth floor.

Mamounas appealed that decision, but the New York Appellate Court shot him down and upheld the city’s jurisdiction over the house. Today, the building remains in construction

It would see something that it wanted to devour and demolish whatever was in its’ path like a machine?

It might be a stretch, but it’s the image that comes to mind when I think about describing the functions of muscles in our body.

Research shows during our late thirties and forties people who are physically inactive can

lose an average of between 3 – 5% of muscle mass each decade, or about 6 lbs. of muscle each decade, a condition known as sarcopenia “age-related muscle loss”.

Like little Tasmanian devils, muscles are consumers. They consume energy in the form of calories in your body; about 75 - 150 calories a day! In other words, the more lean muscle you build, the higher your fat burning capacity.

The American Heart Association stresses the importance of cardiovascular activities such as walking, aerobics, and swimming at least five times a week, 30 minutes a day. Equally important however, are its recommendations for strength bearing exercises: two days per week of moderate-to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity and as you get stronger, add a third day.

Here are just a few of the benefits provided by strength-bear-

ing exercises: Stronger muscles surrounding your joints and bones reduces pressure to your ankles, knees, hips and back.

Increases energy and fat burning capacity.

Increases bone density (especially for women at higher risk for osteoporosis) Improves core stability and balance, decreasing the risk of a fall, or serious injury resulting from a fall should one occur.

Muscle contractions increase oxygen circulation, helping to remove toxins from the tissues and joints that cause inflammation Before you begin any exercise program, it is important to speak with your doctor and seek guidance from a licensed fitness professional. Also remember these two key tips: If you cannot lift or pull a weight more than eight times, most likely it is too heavy. More than 15 times, it is probably too

light. Begin with a weight you can lift/pull 10-12 times without stopping. Gradually increase weight and reduce the reps as you get stronger.

Whether using free weights or machines, begin with a lighter weight until you master how to do the exercise with the correct form in order to avoid injury.

n Thursday, June 30, 2016, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and State Senator Jeff Klein will host the borough’s official kickoff to the Independence Day Celebrations, the annual “New York Salutes America” boardwalk festival and fireworks extravaganza at Orchard Beach located in The Bronx. Over 10,000 people are expected to be in attendance.

“This is a great funfilled evening one can spend with their friends

and family,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “This is one of our jewel events; which this year includes the addition of our second annual eating contest, where people from across the city can experience the best that The Bronx has to offer. I urge everyone to join myself, State Senator Klein and thousands of your neighbors as we kick-off our city’s Independence Day celebrations and salute America together.”

is a celebratory time for all Americans. Every year I look forward to our fireworks extravaganza, which has become a cherished tradition for our Bronx families. As we reflect upon the extraordinary history of our nation, we must remember the sacrifices of our brave U.S. servicemen and women, whose courageous acts contributed to our nation’s freedom,” said State Senator Jeff Klein.

The event is free; open to the public and

includes fun activities for the kids, such as magicians, balloon artists, music performances and much more. The event will begin at 6 p.m., with the eating contest starting at 7:45 p.m. and the fireworks show beginning at 9:20 p.m.

This year, the fireworks music score will feature an eclectic mix of music all performed

by Bronx natives, many of whom are Bronx Walk of Fame inductees. From Doo Wop to Hip Hop, Classic Rock, Swing,

Funk, Soul, Pop and Latin, you’ll hear from such Bronxites as Dion, Steven Tyler, Bobby Darin, Nitty, The Chiffons, Anthrax, Irene Cara, Grand Master Flash, Ace Frehley, Kurtis Blow, Prince Royce and Jennifer Lopez.

he Bronx’s unemployment rate has fallen to one of its lowest numbers ever, according to newly released statistics from the New York State Department of Labor.

The unemployment rate in The Bronx dropped to 6.1 percent in May 2016, down from 6.6 percent in April 2016 and 7.8 percent in May 2015. This is the lowest unemployment rate the borough has seen since Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. first took office in May 2009, topping last month’s previous all-time low.

The total number of Bronxites employed also remains high, 567,500, with nearly 100,000 more Bronx residents employed today than when Borough President Diaz took office

Adams along with a host of Brooklynites, international and domestic cultural enthusiasts kicked off the inaugural Central Brooklyn Arts & Cultural Walk (CBACW). Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Brooklyn Museum served as the official campuses

for this festive affair that helped celebrate the official launch of One Brooklyn Fund, Inc. (OBFI), the borough of Brooklyn’s very own charitable arm.

In partnership with key sponsors NYC & Co., Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, WBLS FM, the New York Daily News, WPIX, ABC7 AND News 12, the famed Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Arch located at Grand Army Plaza served as the official staging area for

the family-friendly CBACW. Activities included live entertainment including the cast of Motown the Musical; Dwana Smallwood Performance Arts Center’s dancers; conscious rapper Path P; legendary Broadway actress Ebony JoAnn; Brooklyn Dance Festival dancers, Cumbe Dance Ensemble and countless others.

Other activities include the Brooklyn Public Library’s 75th Anniversary celebration, which featured live enter-

tainment and family-friendly activities in their plaza area.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden rolled out its kid-friendly Discovery Garden workshop, and the Brooklyn Museum provided arts and crafts for all ages in their plaza area. CBACW also unveiled its annual Children’s Village, which included the BK Chill Ice Cream Social.

The event matched children with senior citizens around a tasty treat. Department of aging and many healthcare providers supported the effort.
