Harlem streets were filled with thousands who came out to celebrate this past weekend HARLEM WEEK events. Music filled the air from the booths as well as on the main stage. The streets were lined with vendors offering food, fashions, health screenings and information. Children had their faces painted and enjoyed the many activities that were part of the children’s festival. There were a couple of showers but not enough to dampen the spirit of the festivities.

The final HARLEM WEEK event happens this weekend - The Percy Sutton 5K Walk/Run. The Harlem Community News and the community mourns the passing of beloved photojournalist Gideon Mannasseh. Gideon’s photos have appeared in our publications for the past 20 years. Condolences to his family.

Afro Cuban Jazz Band Jaambo provided the music for the evening. The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce who led the Harlem/Havana initiative acknowledged and thanked all of those who made the week of activities possible.

Congressman Charles

Rangel, Chairperson of the Harlem/Havana Music & Cultural Festival, provided official farewell remarks and thanks to the artists from Havana who came to be a part of this first Festival.

The audience was then treated to a fantastic performance from Cuba’s JJ Folkloric Dance Company and a fashion show featuring designs from Cuban designer Mariela Caridad Aleman Orozo.

The guests mixed and mingled and enjoyed Harlem & Havana Soul Foods. The evening closed with a fun jam session with Jaambo, singers and dancers from the JJ Folkloric

his year as a part of the 42nd Annual HARLEM WEEK festivities the 1st ever Harlem/Havana Music & Cultural festival took place featuring some of Havana’s foremost musicians, dancers, visual artists and chefs alongside Harlem musicians, artists and chefs in a unique cultural exchange between two of the iconic locations for culture, Havana, Cuba and the village of Harlem.

The evening was a microcosm of the festival with a showcase of the Havana/Harlem Art & Photo Exhibit (which continues to be on display in the Mural Pavilion of Harlem

NNPA FOUNDATION LAUNCHES ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING CAMPAIGN, "UNDRESS"

he National Newspaper Publishers Association Foundation (NNPAF) commences National Human Trafficking Awareness by launching its own anti-human trafficking campaign called “UNDress,” which stands for Undermining Nationwide Demand for the Recruitment, Exploitation and Sexual Solicitation of women and children. The campaign will target those who buy and traffic women and children by placing public service announcements in places where buyers typically ‘shop’ for sexual services.

“The NNPA Foundation is in a unique position to address this issue, because we can generate edu-

cation and awareness by utilizing our own media products,” said Kimberly Johnson, the Foundation’s executive director.

Years before her term at the NNPA Foundation, Johnson conducted speaking and training events all over Georgia, working with trafficking survivors, local nonprofits, government agencies, advocates and local and national law enforcement.

Johnson is certified to train on human trafficking and child sexual abuse and is an award-winning producer of the docufilm, Sex Trafficking in Atlanta: A Survivor’s Perspective.

“The issue of human trafficking, particularly sex traffick-

ing, is partly fueled by salacious images in media”, Johnson said. “We plan to counter the effects of those images through our own content and resources. We are looking to partner with other organizations in this effort.”

he home buying process is difficult enough to complete under the best circumstances. However, if you make a mistake during the home buying process it can have a disastrous impact on your success as a homeowner.

he Black Press lost one of it’s most celebrated warriors when George Curry, veteran journalist and former Editor-In-Chief of the NNPA News Wire, died from an apparent heart attack on Saturday, August 20. Curry was 69.

Curry, 69, died of a reported heart attack on Saturday, Aug. 20, in suburban Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C. “On behalf of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), we are all saddened and heartbroken by the sudden passing of one our most admired, respected, and gifted colleagues, George E. Curry,” said NNPA President Dr. Benjamin Chavis.

“Black America, and in fact millions of African people all over the world, had come to know George Curry as a fearless scholar and writer who used his pen and wit to aggressively advance the cause of freedom, justice and equality for Black people and for the whole of humanity.”

Chavis continued: “George was our trusted comrade on the frontlines of the Civil Rights Movement and on the front pages of the Black Press of America. We will miss him.”

said Washington Informer Publisher and NNPA Chair Denise Rolark Barnes, who called Curry a giant in the journalism profession.

“As publisher of ‘The Washington Informer,’ I admired George’s leadership as Editor-In-Chief of ‘Emerge,’ the preeminent monthly news magazine targeting issues impacting African-Americans,” Rolark Barnes said.

“George’s uncompromising journalistic leadership delivered on Emerge’s promise to deliver edgy, hard-hitting, intellectual, well-written and thoroughly researched content that attracted national attention and left an indelible mark on the lives of many.

“As a member and now chair of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, I was honored to carry George’s weekly column in ‘The Washington Informer’ and to work with him while he served as Editor-In-Chief of the NNPA News Wire. George provided so much of his

time, energy, wisdom and incredible journalistic genius to the Black Press,” she said.

“His work will stand as a lasting legacy of journalistic excellence and integrity of which all of us in the Black Press and the journalism industry at-large can feel extremely proud. My prayers and sympathy extend to his family and closest companions. He will be sorely missed.”

Freddie Allen, the managing editor of the NNPA News Wire, called Curry an icon in the Black Press and said that his legacy of mentoring young journalists will bear fruit for many years to come.

Recently, Allen and Curry were part of a Black media delegation that worked with the Black AIDS Institute to cover the 2016 International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa.

“George taught me what it meant to be a professional journalist and also about the importance of working in the Black Press,” Allen said. “His

writing and insight on critical issues affecting the Black community will be sorely missed. I’m thankful for the time we spent together in Durban.”

Curry was a consummate journalist with integrity as his mantra, said Dorothy R. Leavell, publisher of the Crusader newspapers in Chicago and Gary, Indiana.

“We shall miss this voice of reason and thought-provoking columns full of researched facts. It was just the week of August 13th that George wrote a column titled ‘Even Funerals Are Not Family Reunions Anymore.’ He used his family as an example of the loss of closeness that he had enjoyed during his childhood and early adult life and bemoaned the fact that at his cousin Charlene’s funeral the week before that closeness was no longer there,” Leavell said.

“What was ironic is that he pledged that he would try to get his family back together by saying, ‘Neither Big Mama nor Aunt Julia Mae would be pleased that our once close-knit family is in shambles, but as long as I have breath in me, I am going to try to get my family back together.

I know it’s a very long shot, but I owe that to Big Mama and Aunt Julia Mae to keep trying.’

“I’m sure George meant to keep that pledge and perhaps the closeness of his family will

become a reality, but at a large cost,” said Leavell, adding that she hoped his family will reunite at his funeral. “We miss you already, George.”

The news of Curry’s death not only reverberated throughout Black media, the loss was also felt in the halls of government.

“The Congressional Black Caucus joins with members of the press from around the country to mourn the loss of George E. Curry, a pioneer in Civil Rights and journalism,” CBC Chairman G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), said in a statement. “Curry was a giant in journalism and he stood on the frontlines of the Civil Rights era and used his voice to tell our stories when others would not. The CBC offers our sympathies and condolences to his friends and family, his readers from around the country, and to the countless number of individuals he mentored in the art of reporting and journalistic writing until his untimely death.”

Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton even took a moment from her busy campaign to express her thoughts about Curry, whom she called a friend.

“I am saddened by the loss of an outstanding journalist and supportive friend. George E. Curry was a pioneering journalist, a tireless crusader for justice, and a true agent of change,” Clinton said in

a statement. “With quality reporting, creativity, and skillful persuasion he influenced countless people, including me, to think beyond their narrow experience and expand their understanding.

George may be gone, but he will not be forgotten.”

The Rev. Al Sharpton called Curry a “trailblazer” and said he was “saddened beyond words” at news of Curry’s death.

In 2003, Curry was named “Journalist of the Year” by the National Association of Black Journalists and he’s also on NABJ’s list of the Most Influential Black Journalists of the 20th Century.

“We pledge to keep the journalistic genius and spirit of George Curry alive in all that we will do in the future to sustain the liberating and empowering voice of Black owned newspapers and media companies,” Chavis said.

“George and I were lifelong friends and co-workers at the NNPA, NAACP, SCLC, ANC and just about every other national and international organization that is serious about demanding justice and equality.”

Chavis continued: “The legacy of freedom-fighter journalists like George Curry will never pass away, but will always be kept dear and present in our continued struggles to liberate all from injustice.”

Champions Basketball League brings affordable games with former NBA talent

he Champions Basketball League, a new and exciting basketball league scheduled to debut next summer, introduced their New York team, the Gotham Ballers, at a press conference at Walt Clyde Frazier’s restaurant in Manhattan, Clyde Frazier’s Wine and Dine.

The two-time NBA champion, Hall of Famer, restauranteur and current New York Knicks color analyst Frazier discussed the huge community service commitment the league has and the way fans will be able to interact with the players. “For me it was a way of giving

back.” During the off-season, the league will partner with non-profits to create community events in all 50 states featuring league players and coaches to benefit charity partners.

He also discussed the chance the league provides for players on and off the court. “I view this league as a second opportunity.”

But as they grow to adolescence, following parental advice sometimes gives way to peer or media influences, and those once-thrifty children are now teenagers in a consumer-driven world where spending, not saving, is king.

“Nearly everyone falls into two categories: spenders and savers,” says John Cortines, co-author with Gregory Baumer of God and Money: How We Discovered True Riches at Harvard Business School (www. g o d a n d m o n e y. n e t ) .

“Spending is easy, so it’s up to parents to start conversations with their teens on the importance of saving and, just as importantly, giving.”

Cortines and Baumer suggest three ways 14

parents can help teens establish good financial habits before they reach adulthood, and pave the way for those teens to become generous people as well as good savers: • Help them begin saving for retirement now. Teens who land a part-time job often want to save money to buy a car or they simply want to enjoy a little financial freedom with weekend shopping sprees.

Unless they’re careful, that money burning a proverbial hole in their pocket is spent before the next payday. Parents can help them think beyond today by suggesting they invest a portion of that income in a Roth IRA. Mom and Dad can even consider matching their teen dollar-for-dollar on their savings. “Explain the wonder of compounding investment returns – how the money they invest as a teen could be worth 10 to 20 times

as much when they retire,” Cortines says.

• Family philanthropy. Even if the gifts are modest, Cortines and Baumer advocate involving teens in the family giving plan. Encourage them to research charities and apply for “grants” from the family’s budget for giving. “The experience of learning about nonprofits will be invaluable,” Baumer says. This is also where another portion of the teen’s earnings from a part-time job could be placed.

• Let them into your journey. Parents should model what they want their teens to emulate. Cortines said this begins with “letting them see your character as reflected in financial decisions.” That doesn’t mean letting teens know their parents’ net worth or the details of their income.

eniors took uptown’s center stage last week for an event that honored the neighborhood’s sages as part of HARLEM WEEK. Hundreds of seniors braved the sweltering temperatures to attend the annual HARLEM WEEK New York City Senior Citizens Day at the Adam C. Powell Jr. State Office Building on W. 125th St. Hospitals, universities, city agencies and other health and wellness organizations had exhibits on the plaza of the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. state office building offering fresh fruits and vegetables, a health fair offering blood pressure screenings, smoothies, and information on everything from free classes for adults to protection from the Zika virus.

screenings, while exercise instructors put the seniors through their paces with exercise classes.

“I’m here because I believe good health starts in the community,” Claudia Boykins, the engagement and policy director for the Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership told the Harlem News as she took seniors’ blood pressure. “They say it takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a village to keep the village healthy.”

Inside the Adam Clayton Powell Jr state office building, seniors who have made a difference in their community were honored at the “Elder’s Jubilee” Awards Luncheon. Utilizing the theme of “Our Past, Future and Present Inspirations,” the event honorees included Robert (“Bob”) Tate, the founder and president of marketing firm Unlimited Contacts. Tate received the 2016 Joseph

Roberts Community Service Award. Also honored was Charlotte Sutton, the daughter-in-law of the legendary Percy Sutton, and executive member of the HARLEM WEEK Children’s Festival commitee who received the Vivian Robinson Community Service Award.

Reps from insurance company United Healthcare spoke to the seniors about their insurance options, and the city’s Department of Health handed out pamphlets on wellness issues like safe pest control and preventing heat exhaustion. And over at the Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center, marketing coordinator Yveline Legagneur handed out information on the free high school equivalency classes and career training the school – part of the state University of New York – offers.

“We’re right here in the building,” Legagneur said.

“We are a resource for the community, and we’re really pushing people to go back to school.”

NY City Senior Citizens Day is an event that Harlem native Linda Pierce, 68, said she wouldn’t miss, even though she now resides in the Bronx.

“We did exercise upstairs,” Pierce said proudly as she got her blood pressure checked at the Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership’s table. “I was born in Harlem, in Harlem Hospital. It’s in the blood baby. It’s in the blood.”

3 Tips for Keeping Your Kids Drug-Free this School Year

ll parents want to feel confident that their children are happy, healthy and focused on the future. The unfortunate reality is that drug use can derail these goals and put a strain on families.

Parents can do a lot to curtail their child’s risk.

Here are three tips to help keep kids drug-free this school year and beyond.

1. Get kids active in extracurricular activities.

Adolescents aged 12 to 17 who participate in extracurricular activities are less likely to use alcohol, cigarettes and illicit drugs, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).

With 38 percent of parents spending between $100 to $249 per child on back-toschool clothing, according to statistics from online retailer zulily, parents and kids alike should feel confident in their purchases.

“It’s never a good feeling to buy your child new clothes, only to find a favorite color, pattern or style has changed,” says Shawn Redman, senior buyer and kids’ fashion expert for zulily.com. “This back-to-school season, our ‘Kids’ Trend Report’ uncovered that now, more

A

fter spending the entire year working; I have decided that it is time for a much needed break! Hopefully you are not like me. I tend to work hard all the time and leave precious little time for myself. Miracle of miracles; a friend asked me to go with her to the Hampton ’s to attend an event. At first I resisted the rather juicy sounding invitation and she didn’t press me because she knows how stubborn I

can be (smiles). She gently reminded me that “all work and no play” isn’t the best thing for anyone and that I was the only person hell-bent on working. So I went, reluctantly.

It was hard for me though, to stop thinking about all the work that would be waiting for me when I returned . . . that is, until I sat on the beach with a glass of champagne! Then it was over. All thoughts of work, New York etc . . . were washed away in one fell swoop. All I could do was think about how fortunate I was to be sitting on the beach, enjoying, relaxing and taking in the fresh air. I looked up at the sky and marveled at the clouds drift-

ing by, heard the squeals of laughter from children playing in the water, almost felt the swoop of a seagull’s wing! Okay that might be stretching it, but I kid you not . . . those two days were what made me decide that I was indeed socially and vacation-ally challenged. So I have made a decision. I am going on vacation!

So, it’s time for you to come out of your cave and live! Give yourself permission to enjoy your life. Have fun. Summer is almost over. What are you going to do? If you haven’t made any plans then you are short-changing yourself. Life is sailing right past you. Refuse to lift your head up and

see the opportunities in front of you; and the boat will slip silently through the channel and out to sea, leaving you at the shore, land-locked and alone.

Are you afraid to poke your head out of your cave? Call a friend and invite them to join you.

Don’t know what to do?

Do anything! Do something that will force you to interact with people.

Don’t have any friends?

Wrong! Everyone has friends and acquaintances in their life, maybe you haven’t made the effort to connect with anyone. Give it a try; you will be surprised at how receptive people can be when you step outside your comfort zone. May-

ev. David Jenkins and his wife Rev. Sheila Jenkins held their annual baptism service at Orchard Beach last week. The candidates and the members were joined by the many folks who were enjoying the beach.

Realism first class! Congratulations to Rev. Jenkins and the members of Bronx Community.

We worshipped with Pentecostal Baptist Church last Sunday as they celebrated the Deacons and Trustees Ministries Anniversary. The messenger was Rev. Idus Nunn and the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church. The well attended service was spirit filled and

as always the food was delicious. Rev. Casper Niles is the Pastor of Pentecostal Baptist Church.

Day Spring Baptist Church on Amsterdam Avenue in Harlem celebrated their Pastor’s Anniversary.

Rev. Gwendolyn Harris and the Greater File Baptist Church were the guest celebrants. Rev. Lee Crawford is the Pastor of Day Spring.

The Appreciation Service for Leading Lady Maria Ratliff was held last week. Rev. Shon Adkins, Pastor of Antioch was the guest preacher.

Rev. Frederick Miller celebrated 13years of Ministry with the Greater Central Baptist Church.

We wish the family of Deacon Willie Long and the members of the Tabernacle of Deliverance our deepest and heartfelt sympathy on his transition. Willie Long was a man of the community who was and loved and respected by many. He was a good friend of mine and a supporter of The 3G Experience on WHCR-90.3FM. His well attended home going service was a fitting tribute to a great man Mission of Hope Ministries presented another Music and Arts Extravaganza on August 20th. Gospel song stylist and composer along with her husband Bob and their children performed selections from

their latest project “at the service. Many local groups will also perform. The service was at Grace United Methodist Church on West 104th Street.

Rev. Raymond L. Mickens, Pastor of Faith Memorial Baptist Church in the Bronx, is recuperating at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. Like many of us he had to have some work done. We wish him a speedy recovery.

We enjoyed and learned from the “Chit-Chat and Chew” service presented by Rev. Dennis Williams and the Greater Universal Temple in Queens. The presenters included Leading Lady Robin Howell who did in

depth examination of the psychological and spiritual things that keep us from being complete servants of God. Her unique presentation, using different color Star Burst candy to represent different aspects of our lives, opened the door for fruitful and informative revelations about those in attendance and solutions to the many deep burning issues that the congregation shared.

he fix won’t be quick.

It never is.

There’s no magic wand to change the things that’ve been on your mind lately: social issues, inequality, poverty, politics, apathy, violence. Those ills didn’t arrive quick and they won’t leave quick but, says Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, they can be repaired. In his new book “Writings on the Wall” (with Raymond Obstfeld), he explains…

When people ask Abdul-Jabbar what he might’ve become, had he not played NBA basketball, his answer often surprises them: he would’ve been a

history teacher. History fascinates him – especially in the way it reflects racism, religious intolerance, and gender issues. In history, as in current events, the truth is sometimes bent.

Take, for instance, politics, which is on everyone’s mind. We rail and complain about issues and promises broken and we like to think it’s all out of our hands.

The truth is that we are the problem: we grow complacent about things we don’t want, acting “like children when it comes to politics” and hoping the government will “take care of us,” rather than taking steps to fix the system ourselves.

White people may deny that racism exists, says Abdul-Jabbar, while Black people know that it does.

Racism didn’t stop with the election of the nation’s first Black president. It doesn’t end with melting-pot cultural appropriation. It actually comes in two forms, he says, and education is the first step in dealing with it, not eliminating it, because racism is always going to be around.

On religion, we should never lose sight of the fact that this “country was founded by religious outcasts running for their lives from persecution for their beliefs.”

When it comes to equality

for women, we must embrace the true meaning of “feminist” and adhere to what we tell pollsters when it comes to gender. We need to look at the media and how to maximize its potential, and we must take better care of our seniors.

“We cannot afford to just wring out hands and depend on the kindness of strangers,” Abdul-Jabbar says.

“We have to bring about change on our own.”

Remember when your grade school teacher told you to put on your thinking cap? You’ll need it again as you’re reading “Writings on the Wall.”

Authors Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Raymond Obstfeld don’t just exam-

ine issues that are on the minds of every American.

They turn them over and blow them apart, looking for solutions that can be accomplished and chiding us gently for not already working. That makes for a thought-demanding, intellectually heavy book but it’s also a worthy call to action; you may also be delighted to see that Abdul-Jabbar doesn’t miss a chance to add a touch of the personal here, which includes quietly unexpected humor.

Readers with the right mindset will find this book to be informative and entertaining but be prepared to take your time get the most from it. There aren’t a lot of pages inside “Writings on

the Wall,” but what’s here is deep and wide and nowhere near quick.

very healthy addiction: After-dinner exercise or as I like to call it “Dessert Exercise”.

According to a recent study by the American College of Sports Medicine, light exercise (low intensity, short duration) following a meal may actually lower triglycerides (major form of fat stored by the body) which evidence has shown can cause an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke.
