Each year Raschid and his wife Kim Niang have generously given a meal to hundreds on Thanksgiving Day. Irving Street Wins AUDELCO Award for “Aint Misbehavin” – Performed at the Firehouse in Harlem

A

UDELCO announced their winners for the 2014-2015 Vivian Robinson/AUDELCO Awards for Excellence in Black Theatre.

Irving Street Rep. and FaisOne Productions Inc. took home the win for “Best Revival” for their 2014 production of the Broadway smash hit, Ain’t Misbehavin’. The limited engagement ran last winter at the Faison Firehouse Theater in Harlem was met with raves and was extended twice. This year’s AUDELCO Awards were held on Monday, November 16, 2015

at the Symphony Space Theatre at 2537 Broadway in New York City.

We have traveled all over the world with this production, but there’s nothing like performing in Harlem where Fat’s Waller reigned.”

Ain’t Misbehavin’ is an extraordinary musical that encompasses 30 show-stopping numbers taking you on a journey through the Fats Waller song

book, and Harlem in its heyday.

With snazzy period costumes, complete with bowlers, spats, ermine and pearls, the dynamic five- member cast turned the theatre into a rollicking rent party.

Irving Street Rep. was founded in 1995 by A. Curtis Farrow and is dedicated to producing the finest in theatrical and musical entertainment. Its first production, Ain’t Misbehavin’, was met with raves, which encouraged the group to tackle even more ambitious projects.

Their next endeavor was a full-

scale revival of Your Arms Too Short To Box With God, which included a Cast of 20 and a 30-member gospel choir. It set Milwaukee on fire and proceeded to tour the Midwest. Since then, Irving Street Rep. has produced tours of Smokey Joe’s Café, Sophisti-

cated Ladies, Five Guys Named Moe, The Elegance of Ellington, and The Nat King Cole Songbook. Irving Street Rep. is also responsible for the annual production of the McDonald’s Gospelfest, the Tri-State area’s premiere gospel event now in its 16th year.

hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. But now it is time to get back to the issue at hand and that is buying a home. The question remains, what must you do to purchase property in Harlem?

We have established the fact that you will need much more money for the down payment in order to complete this purchase. And that is why the holiday season can be an extremely dangerous time of year for prospective first time buyers.

Everyone is trying to get your money during this time of year. Stores will be open late and many hot items will be on sale. If you decide to buy gifts for family members and friends, be very careful and stay within your shop-

ping budget. Use your credit cards wisely by not charging too many items and exceeding your credit limits. Make sure you pay off these charges as soon as possible to avoid additional interest fees. Do not get caught up in the shopping frenzy that will most likely become the ‘madness of the holiday season.’ If your dream is to become a homeowner, do not lose sight of your goal. Stay focused on completing the home buying process. You will still need to aggressively save as much money as possible for your down payment and closing costs. The best way to (1) increase your savings is by identifying and eliminating wasteful spending; (2) use your

monthly household budget to track all income and expenses and (3) maintain financial discipline to live within your means.

Shirley Chisholm, First African American Congresswoman to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom Statement by Congressman Charles B. Rangel

ongressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement regarding his colleague Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to the House of Representatives, as she is posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“I am immensely pleased that my dear friend and colleague, the late Shirley Chisholm from Brooklyn, will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. This is a very significant recognition of the

life and legacy of a remarkable individual who made history not only as the first African-American woman elected to Congress in 1969, but also as the first African American to run for President of the United States when she declared her candidacy in 1972. A historic figure in American politics who broke glass ceilings and set examples for future generations of leaders, Shirley Chisolm was a champion for improving the quality of life in inner city communities, and a tireless advocate for protecting the rights of women and children throughout the nation.

Jacob Family Restaurant Served Free Meals on Thanksgiving

achid and Kim Niang, owners of two Jacob Restaurants in Harlem (Lenox @ 128th and Frederick Douglas @ 143rd St) , continue to give back annually to the Harlem community by giving free dinners on Thanksgiving day. For several hours the community came to Jacob and had their Thanksgiving turkey and trimmings along with the food that Jacobs features every day. Rachid is blessed to have dozens of volunteers who were there to help make the process a smooth one

and especially to help the elderly and disabled.

Congressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, served food Thanksgiving afternoon at Jacob Restaurant located at 2695 Frederick Douglass Blvd. Wearing an apron and serving turkey, Congressman Rangel greeted the hundreds of Harlemites who waited in long lines for the signature soul food served at Jacob Restaurant. What

was on the menu for those who were served at Jacob? Soul food staples that the restaurant has become known for, like fried, baked, barbecue and jerked chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes, string beans, curried goat, crab cakes, cabbage, baked salmon, beef short ribs, different types of rice, corn, oxtails, assorted fruit, dessert including banana pudding, and much more were available, as well as items especially added for Thanksgiving, including turkey and

nate some of us are. It’s a good feeling. It’s always good whether it is Thanksgiving or not to give thanks to God.” I then asked Congressman Rangel what he was most thankful for. “Being alive. I’m 85 years old” he said, as the natural leader continued to shuttle people in and around the restaurant. While Congressman Rangel was certainly the oldest volunteer serving food at Jacob Restaurant, we also spoke to the youngest volunteer, Leon Barrett, Jr, an eight-year old who was with his grandmother and two aunts.

Leon said it was “good” to volunteer to “help the community.” I, for one, was very impressed with this eight-year old who was not only volunteering, but knew why he was doing it too. Kudos

to Leon Barrett, Jr and his support system for instilling the valuable lessons of giving back to the community at such a young age.

Walt Frazier welcomed the community at Jacob Restaurant at

the Lenox @ 128th St location. Rachid said “We as black men need to talk. If we all choose a day to give back to the community, we will all succeed.” Rachid, who named the restaurant Jacob in honor of his father,

Jacob Niang, had to oversee many Thanksgiving orders for clients, while still managing to selflessly serve the community on a day of need as well.

n November 19th, the Ralph Lauren Cancer Center and MetroPlus Health Plan sponsored a Lung Cancer Screening and Information session. Since Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States and worldwide, Ralph Lauren and MetroPlus invited the community to come out and learn more about screening and available healthcare programs. Kids usually opt for sweet drinks like soda and fruit juice instead of plain water, and many teens tend to reach for sports and energy drinks instead.

According to a recent Harvard study, more than half of American children are dehydrated, which can have repercussions for their health and academic performance.

About one-quarter of children in the US do not drink water on a daily basis. Overall, boys were more than 75 percent more likely to be inadequately hydrated than girls.

Dear Alma, Over my long Thanksgiving weekend, everywhere I went I encountered my married brothas complaining about the same thing – wives not wanting or initiating sex. It was as much a constant as football and turkey.

These are good men, Alma. They want to do the right thing, but some feel trapped.

They can be faithful and celibate or they can creep. And yes, some have already strayed.

(One married friend told of an encounter he had with his girlfriend inside a bathroom that made our hair stand on end.) We all agreed that our wives would never do something so…so… so…so damned sexy and daring. Tell me, Alma. Why do wives avoid sex with their husbands (when the girlfriends can’t seem to get enough)? And don’t give me that lame excuse about wives having to work on their jobs then come home to do housework and

homework. Most of my friends share equally in housekeeping and child-rearing duties.

Simply put, if a wife won’t “cook” for her man at home, shouldn’t she expect him to occasionally eat out?

say this: A thoroughly basted turkey turns out moist and tender every time. Are you feeling me? Let me break it down. In the beginning, you really don’t have to do much to get the gravy going. But once you’ve had your favorite holiday dish year after year, we all know what to expect.

You need to spice that sucker up just a little every now and again.

Add a little more hot sauce here and a little less mustard there. It just depends on the occasion. Give the turkey in your kitchen all the attention it deserves.

You don’t need to

take that extra effort outside your home, ‘cause either way you’re putting out effort. Why not display all your extra trimmings where it feeds and nurtures your commitment? Reach into the cabinet and take out everything you got. While you’re waiting for the oven to get hot, delicately rub and pat down your turkey. Please tell me you pulled it out of the freezer this morning and you’ve given it appropriate time and assistance to thaw. Add all the ingredients necessary. Don’t be shy; good cooks make sure

they get all up in those nooks and crannies.

That’s the old school way; you’ve got to put your foot in it. LOL. Once you’ve seasoned that bad boy to the best of your ability, trust me, it’s ready to roast.

he Thanksgiving holiday has come and gone. Were you thankful for all the good things that you experienced during the past year? If you are not thankful or grateful you need to spend some time in the hospitals across the city and see how other folks spent their Thanksgiving. You might consider the plight of the families who have experienced the “empty chair syndrome.” That’s how we describe the situation when someone was here last year and is not here this year. Think about the Sutton family and their tragedy. The Rice and McDonald families.

in South Carolina. You want me to continue? How about the thousands that are behind bars. Some are guilty as charged. Some not. How about the soldiers that are serving in far-away places defending your right to celebrate Thanksgiving.

The lines at the many food pantries and kitchens are longer than ever. The shelters are crowded with homeless men, women and children. Thank God for the long list of churches in the community that provided food for the Thanksgiving holiday. Our efforts have to continue beyond Thanksgiving.

ama says you’d better share your toys.

But you don’t mind; it’s Christmas and as long as other kids are careful, they can play with your new gifts, too. Sharing is one of the best things about the holidays, as you know, and in the new book “Miracle on 133rd Street” by Sonia Manzano, illustrated by Marjorie Priceman, it could make your holiday brighter.

It was Christmastime, and Jose’s family had the “tiniest Christmas tree ever.” There was hardly room for all the family’s ornaments. Their apartment was small, too, and Mami said the oven was too tiny for the Christmas roast, which made Papi sad.

He wished they’d never left Puerto Rico. Everything was bigger there.

But how do you cook a great big roast? Jose had an idea, Papi put the roast in a great big box, and they set out for Regular Ray’s Pizzeria.

They were barely out the door, when their neighbor, Mrs. Whitman, complained about the noise. On the third floor, Mr. and Mrs. Santiago mentioned that their children weren’t coming to visit this Christmas. Mr. Franklin thought there were burglars in the building, and he refused to come out of his apartment. The Wozenskys on the second floor were worried about money, Ms. Simon was yelling about shopping,

and the DiPalma kids were making a huge racket. Even the customers at Happy Full Tummy Food Store seemed very unhappy.

Three hours later, though, the great big roast had been cooked in a great big pizza oven and the scent was “most glorious… so garlicky and olive oily and delicious…” It smelled so yummy that Jose felt like he was floating on its perfect, tasty goodness.

“Feliz Navidad,” said Mr. Ray as Jose and Papi headed home – but not before they invited Mr. Ray to share their meal. They invited the Wozinskys on Second Floor, and they asked Mr. Franklin to leave his apartment. Mrs. Whitman came, too, and so

did the Santiagos. Each person brought a little something to Jose’s apartment.

And that was where a miracle occurred…

The first guest arrives at your holiday celebration.

Then the second, fifth, eighth, and tenth, and your child might wonder if there’ll be enough for this crowd. The answer, of course, is yes and “Miracle on 133rd Street” will show him how.

There’s always room for one more, as author and Emmy Award-winning actress Sonia Manzano proves in this sweet little story that starts out sad and ends in such joy that you won’t be able to stop smiling. Bronx Unemployment Falls Again Unemployment Down to 6.5%; More Bronxites Employed

T

he Bronx continues to show progress in the areas of job creation and economic development, according to new statistics from the New York State Department of Labor.

The unemployment rate in The Bronx fell to 6.5 percent in October 2015, down from 6.6 percent in September 2015 and 8.9 per-

cent in October 2014.

Those same statistics show that the total number of Bronxites who are employed is 571,700, up from 468,800 in May 2009 when Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. first took office. This is the highest number of Bronxites employed since the Department of Labor began keeping statistics in 1990,

and means that over 100,000 more Bronx residents have jobs today than six years ago.

“The Bronx has seen tremendous growth over the past six years, and none of that would have been possible without strong partnerships between our elected officials, community boards, business community, non-profits, neighbor-

hood leaders and our 1.4 million residents, who everyday are working to make our borough a better place to live, work and raise a family,” said Borough President Diaz.

“We have cut our unemployment rate in half, and more Bronxites have jobs today than ever before. That is success that we can all be proud of.”

“It’s time to end the AIDS epidemic once and for all,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “As we mark World AIDS Day, I’m proud to partner with the Council to announce an unprecedented $23 million more a year for prevention and health care, enabling nearly 200,000 people to receive services each year. And we’re committing to expanding vital HASA housing, nutrition, and transportation support to all who need it – up to

7,300 more people a year – because no New Yorker living with HIV or AIDS should have to choose between medicine and rent.”

With 80 percent of the State’s HIV/AIDS cases in New York City, the plan draws on proven experience and science -- setting an ambitious but achievable goal of bringing new HIV infections down in New York City to achieve the statewide goal of no more than 750 per year by 2020. In 2014, 2,718 New York City residents were newly diagnosed with HIV, a historical low representing a decrease of more than 35 percent from the 4,186 new HIV diagnoses in 2004.

The City’s plan draws upon the recommendations of New York State’s Ending the Epidemic Task Force report adopted earlier this year, and follows an initial $6.6 million com-

mitment for preventative medicine, training, and viral suppression funded by the Council in the FY2016 budget. The City – through the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Human Resources Administration, and NYC Health + Hospitals – served on the State’s Task Force.

The NYC Plan to End the Epidemic combines enhanced medical and social services with biomedical innovation into a comprehensive strategy to reduce new infections. The City is committing to enhancing HIV biomedical prevention and health care, as well as to working with the State and other partners to expand housing, nutrition, and transportation assistance (known as HASA For All), to decrease HIV transmission while supporting the health and well-being of those with HIV or AIDS. “This major investment

be developed by the City’s Department of Housing, Preservation and Development. The NYC Economic Development Corporation’s construction of the phase II infrastructure, roadways, and waterfront park is expected to be completed in 2018.

Housing construction will commence immediately thereafter.

“We’re building a new neighborhood from the ground-up, from its streets to its parks to its transit. This is going to be the biggest affordable housing project built in a generation, and it’s going to ensure that this corner of Queens – despite all the market pressures driving up rents – will remain a diverse place for working people,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The groundbreaking is great news for the current and future residents of Long Island City. This $100 million investment into building new streets, sewer lines, infrastructure upgrades, as well as the expansion of Hunters Point South Park, will ensure all Long Island City residents have the quality of life they deserve. We must build multiple new schools and more affordable housing units in addition to those built here already to make sure

we have all of the services families need to thrive,” said Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer.

“The Phase II of Hunters Point South will not only provide additional units of affordable housing in Western Queens but will also include open space for much needed schools” said Assembly Member Catherine Nolan. “As our community continues to grow these improvements to the current infrastructure are much needed.”

“This next phase of Hunter’s Point South is an important part of the effort to revitalize an area of Long Island City that had been neglected for more than a generation. We celebrate shovels in the ground today for the second phase of a development that will bring online 5,000 incredible apartments for low-, moderate-, and middle-income families. I want to congratulate our sister agencies, and all of our partners, who are working so hard to design and build both a beautiful building and a safe, wonderful, and thriving neighborhood,” said HPD Commissioner Vicki Been.

“The next phase of Hunter’s Point South represents the type of comprehensive, multi-agency approach to neighborhood planning that was envisioned in Housing New York,” said HDC President Gary Rodney. “This mixed-use development was conceptualized holistically to create not only new affordable housing, but the infrastructure – the streets, retail, parks, and schools – that fam-

ilies and communities need to thrive. We are excited about this next phase of the project and look forward to working with all our partners to cross the finish line on this dynamic new neighborhood.”

“Hunters Point South Park, once the site of an industrial shipping hub, is now one of the city’s premier waterfront destinations,” said Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP. “Since the first phase opened in 2013, this park has become a popular spot to enjoy the city skyline while getting in some exercise, or waiting for the East River Ferry. We’re looking forward to extending this continuous green ribbon down the Long Island City waterfront.”

Hunter’s Point South is a massive, multiphase project. The Phase I infrastructure, roadways, and waterfront park was completed by NYCEDC in August 2013, and will support mixed-use developments totaling more than 2,000 housing units. The park includes a central green, a playground, a waterside promenade and additional recreation space, as well as a 13,000-square-foot pavilion housing comfort stations, concessions, an elevated café pla-

za, and a maintenance facility for the Department of Parks and Recreation.

The Hunter’s Point South project has led to the creation of 3,400 linear feet of new roadways that are now open to the public. The infrastructure, roadway, and park design was led by Arup, which served as the project’s prime consultant and lead engineer. Landscape architecture firm Thomas Balsley Associates and architecture firm Weiss/Manfredi designed the park. The design was driven by a commitment to creating a vibrant recreational environment for New Yorkers and visitors while adhering to principles of sustainability.

These include the pursuit of alternative transportation options, such as the inclusion of a protected bikeway, introduction of a bioswale along the length of the park, extensive planting of native species of grasses and trees, use of environmentally sustainable wood, the remediation of formerly contaminated industrial areas, and the solar orientation of the site and comfort station to optimize passive heating and cooling, and solar energy generation.

ast month, Mayor Bill de Blasio broke ground on a new infrastructure for the largest new housing complex built in New York City in nearly 40 years, and the largest affordable housing construction project to date under the Housing New York plan. Phase II of Hunter’s Point South will create nearly 3,000 new apartments, at least 60 percent of which will be affordable to low-, moderate-, and middle-income families. Between phases I and II, Hunter’s Point South will build 5,000 new apartments.

The groundbreaking marks the commencement of work on vital infrastructure at the Hunter’s Point South site, consisting of a new street network with sewers, water main and utility work, as well as the new 11-acre waterfront park. The site will include 100,000 square feet of retail space as well as new community facility space. And the new citywide ferry system launching in 2017 will link the neighborhood directly to the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan.
