GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE The 2015 HARLEM WEEK celebration concluded with the Percy Sutton 5K Run/Walk. I joined the Harlem Tourism Board, as the Executive Director and we walked 1.5 Miles. I look forward to this event each year to be among thousands who are out enjoying nature and getting some much needed exercise. It was great to see everyone participating, including the young children, older adults, some with walkers and of course the runners who came from all over to be part of this event celebrating the legacy of our beloved Percy E. Sutton. (see page 15) Earlier this month Dr. Maya Angelou was honored with a stamp by the U.S. Post Office.(see page 7)

mbassador Suzan “Sujay” Johnson Cook is a Democrat running for office to represent the people of New York’s 13th Congressional District in the United States Congress, “because the people of the 13th District matter, and our diverse, collective voices and values need to be heard in Washington,” states Amb. Cook.

Buoyed by the encouragement of political colleagues, community leaders and supportive friends, earlier this year, the proud Harlemite launched a grassroots campaign for her bid for Harlem’s 13th Congressional District seat when Congressman Charles B. During her profound remarks the poised congressional hopeful reminded guests of her compassionate childhood in Harlem and how she has always wanted the best for her beloved community.

“As my parents taught me growing up in Harlem, we take care of each other. It’s not just ‘each one, teach one’ but each one, reach one – and more if you can. Our district deserves leadership that will unite us, and fight for our needs and our resources so that every child, every person, every family

wins,” explained Amb. Cook.

In closing, Amb. Sujay expressed how she planned on fighting for what was right for Harlem. “Thank you for joining our team to reach one more and bring us together. In Congress I’ll fight for the continued growth and progress of the people and fam-

ilies from Harlem, the Heights, Inwood and the Bronx. The 13th District deserves nothing less,” she exclaimed! “When I am elected, my focus will be on the people I serve -- not on advancing my own political agenda.”

The daughter of a Harlem schoolteacher and an MTA motorman-turned successful small business owner, Suzan “Sujay” Johnson Cook was raised understanding the importance of service to her community. A native of Harlem and the Bronx and a respected local and national faith leader who served in the administrations of Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and for three cabinet secretaries, including Hillary Clinton, Sujay’s career has been about bringing people together and lifting them up.

Brookdale Ctr. on Healthy Aging, seniors attended from Esplanade Gardens NORC, Leonard Covelo, LaGuardia and Yorkville (Brown) Gardens Senior Centers. The attendees were treated to lunch, a jazz music performance and makeovers by Clinique.

Spearheaded by the GNY Links, the Community Partnership Educational Seminars are designed to inform and empower seniors to recognize and cope with the complexities, causes and symptoms related to elder abuse and healthcare in greater Harlem and Chinatown. Their primary objective is to target community-based elder African American, Caribbean, Latino and Asian women and men, ages fifty-five plus whose health and well-being might be compromised by domestic violence and health complexities as they find themselves aging with diminishing support and access to services.

The Links, Incorporated is a volunteer service organization of concerned, committed, and talented women who, linked in friendship, enhance the quality of life in the larger community. The organization is concerned primarily with enriching, sustaining and ensuring the identities, culture and economic survival of African-Americans and persons of African descent. To contribute to the formulation of a positive, productive, and culturally diverse society, The Links, Incorporated focuses on education, cultural enrichment, health and wellness and civic involvement. This focus is implemented through strategies such as public information and education, economic development, and public policy.

welcoming address and Jane Tillman Irving of WCBS-AM/News Radio 88 served as the mistress of ceremonies. Jane shared many fond memories and her early interviews with Maya Angelou. The beautiful Susan Taylor, Founder & CEO of National CARES Mentoring Movement and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Essence Magazine, gave a heartfelt tribute and shared personal stories of love, respect and admiration for Dr. Angelou. Ms. Taylor’s delivery was given with such warm affection.

n Thursday, August 20, 2015, Dr. Maya Angelou Limited Edition Forever Stamp Special Dedication Ceremony was held at the African Burial Ground National Monument located at 290 Broadway, New York City.

Dr. Angelou’s fans filled the sacred space with a standing-room only audience. Everyone present could feel the spirit of love, warmth and respect for the Great Maya Angelou.

Shirley McKinney, Superintendent of Six NYC Historical Sites delivered the

to share his personal experience of viewing Dr. Maya Angelou’s papers, which focus on her literary career spanning some 40 years, chronicling her compassionate voice of hope, love, inspiration and joy for humanity. This collection was acquired by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in 2010. Mr. Fullwood was delighted to share what he felt when he saw the rare, personal and professional papers, from yellow notepads to original draft pages, the wealth of which span her writing career.

by Miss Maya Williams, who was personally inspired by Dr. Angelou. She wrote “Our Maya” especially for the occasion. Marsha Thompson, Soprano, bought the house down with her beautiful soprano voice.

This momentous event was hosted by The Ebony Society of Philatelic Events & Reflections (ESPER) and Mr. Don Neal, Editor of ESPER, delivered the greeting and closing remarks. The Reverend Dr. Johnny Ray Youngblood, Executive Pastor and Spiritual Engineer of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Brooklyn, blessed the house with a moving benediction.

“Some of the protections that had been enshrined in the Voting Rights Act itself have been weakened as a consequence of court decisions and interpretations of the law. State legislatures have instituted procedures and practices that, although on the surface may appear neutral, have the effect of discouraging people from voting…And if, in fact, those practices, those trends, those tendencies are allowed to continue unanswered, then over time the hardwon battles of 50 years ago erode, and our democracy erodes.”

– President Barack Obama, August 6, 2015 On the eve of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a federal appeals court in New Orleans struck down a strict Texas voter identification law. In a unanimous ruling, the three-judge panel found that the law violated the federal Voting Rights Act and had a disproportionate and discriminatory impact on Blacks and Hispanics in the state.

The law – which requires forms of identification that many poor people and people in communities of color either do not have or have great difficulty ac-

cessing – made it far more difficult for these groups, including college students and the elderly, to exercise their constitutional right as citizens to vote.

The importance of the ruling has not been lost on advocates battling on the frontlines to expand our nation’s access to the ballot and thwart legislative attempts at voter suppression. It was a small victory in the larger enterprise of many Republican-controlled states efforts to limit voters’ rights. It was a reminder of why the landmark civil rights legislation signed into law

by President Lyndon Johnson 50 years ago remains an important weapon in the fight to expand access to the polls. And it underscored why Congress needs to make restoring the Voting Rights Act a political priority.

The aftermath of the Supreme Court’s regrettable 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder to gut Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act— which established which states had to get advance approval from the federal government before making any changes to their election laws—ushered in a wave of tough voter suppression laws. Texas does not stand alone in its zeal to make it harder for Americans to vote.

Wisconsin and North Carolina have

passed similar voter identification laws—and the restrictive measures don’t just end there. Eliminating same-day registration, shortening early voting, doing away with online voting registration and aggressively purging voters from the voter registration rolls are some of the other tactics legislators are using to deny eligible voters access to the polls. These lawmakers justify their restrictive policies with allegations of voter fraud—a claim that experts have proven to be unfounded time and again.

The myth of widespread voter identification fraud appears to be nothing more than a political fraud orchestrated by officials eager to shift political fortunes to their party.

There is no right more fundamental to our democracy than the right to vote. We, as a nation, must ensure that all Americans who can vote have the opportunity to vote.

The seemingly obvious idea that a democracy functions at its best when the largest number of its citizens are afforded the opportunity to determine who will lead it—and how it will be led—is under a modern-day legislative assault. If our elected officials truly do believe that all votes matter, Congress must commit to stemming the tide of suppression and get to the work

of fully restoring voter protections in the Voting Rights Act. The National Urban League stands with President Barack Obama and the civil rights and voting rights advocates calling for the full restoration of the Voting Rights Act and the reinstatement of the voter protections dismantled under the Supreme Court’s disastrous 2013 decision.

And we would do well to remember that this fight goes beyond maneuvers in the halls of Congress.

As President Obama said during his remarks at the White House commemoration of the golden anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, “Far more people disenfranchise themselves than any law does, by not participating, by not getting involved.” The number of Americans who participated in the 2014 midterm elections was reportedly the lowest it’s been since World War II. We cannot clamor for the right to vote only to turn around and ignore our civic duty. We owe that much and more to those who fought and bled and died to secure the right to vote because it is not enough to gain the right, we must employ, maintain and protect it as well.

This is still the question on every prospective first time home buyer’s mind.

The home values in Harlem are getting so high that lowto moderate-income families are being priced out of the market. No matter how much money you have been able to save, most lenders will use your debt-to-income ratio (DTI) to determine the amount of money you can borrow. Your monthly income will ultimately determine what you can afford.

The debt-to-income ratio is calculated based on your monthly gross income and is represented by a fraction such as 33/38.

The first number represents your

monthly mortgage costs (principal, interest, taxes, insurance, and private mortgage insurance if you are putting down less than 20% of the purchase price.) Timothy Graphenreed served as dance arranger/musical supervisor. This was a remake made in heaven for Graphenreed who first worked with Faison in the summer of 1973 on a production of “Inner City” at the legendary Washington Theater Club in Washington D.C. Faison then invited him to be the Dance Arranger for “The Wiz.” When it became apparent that there was no music for either the Tornado or the Emerald City scene, Graphenreed and Faison created those pieces during the dance rehearsals in 1974. Both songs are part of the Tony and Grammy Award winning score. “I’m thrilled to be working with George again,” he exclaimed! “The Magic is back!”

he last two weeks of HARLEM WEEK 2015 have been amazing and historic.

On Tuesday, August 11th at Columbia University, the 2nd Annual Basil Paterson Business Awards Luncheon was held. The luncheon was emceed

by NY1 senior Anchor Cheryl Wills to a full house of four hundred attendees.

Michele Roberts, Executive Director, National Basketball Players Association; Wendy Lewis, Senior Vice President, Major League Baseball; and Paula Madison, Chairman & CEO, Madison Media Management LLC received the Chamber’s 2015 Outstanding Achievement Awards. A special International award was presented to Hon. Serge Letchimy, President, Regional Council of Martinique by Hon. H. Carl McCall, Chairman, SUNY on behalf of the Chamber. Hon. David Paterson, former New York State governor, gave remarks on behalf of his late father, Basil Paterson.

The luncheon was preceded by two conferences, one on health, focused on Obamacare and a Healthier Harlem; the second on business focused on MWBE and energy efficiency. Following the luncheon there was a packed house for a Harlem technology conference co-sponsored by Silicon Harlem and The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and chaired by Clayton Banks, Co-Founder, Silicon Harlem.

Saturday, August 15th paid tribute to “Our Lives Matter” taking into account that the lives of everyone, no matter race, color, creed or gender, should matter to all. It was important to recognize the multiple contributions of National Action Network because whether it’s in Ferguson, Staten Island, Charleston, Bed-Stuy, Cleveland, etc., whenever there is an incident that’s deemed to be blatantly racist and/or

without reason, the voice of National Action Network, led by its president, Rev. Al Sharpton, saying “no justice, no peace” is heard. This tribute drew performances from Nona Hendryx, the Last Poets, Impact Repertory Theatre and Alvin Ailey Dancers.

There was great symbolism in the closing prayers of prominent clergy members – Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Buddist – all saying “Our Lives Matter” and giving recognition to Rev. Sharpton. Some of those who came out to join Rev. Dennis Dillon, Publisher, NY Christian Times in paying tribute to National Action Network included Rev. Michael Walrond, Rev. Herbert Daughtry, Imam Talib Abdur-Rashid, Hazel Dukes, NAACP, Arva Rice, New York Urban League, NYC Comptroller, Scott Stringer, District Attorney, Cy Vance, Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E., Councilmember Inez Dickens, Grand Master of the Prince Hall Masons, author, Herb

by Assemblyman Keith Wright, was emceed by distinguished radio personality Imhotep Gary Byrd. Later in the afternoon there was a surprise presentation given by the internationally renowned artist, Alicia Keys, who came out to let the audience know that our lives matter and that she would lead an effort to support music education for the children of Harlem. Ms. Keys’ remarks were particularly well received by the audience.

Sunday, August 16th, HARLEM DAY, we paid tribute to the 90th Anniversary of the birth of Malcolm X. This tribute brought together Malcolm’s daughters in unity for the first time in years. It was truly a beautiful sight to behold. The thousands assembled sang Happy Birthday to Malcolm led

by Ray Chew and the HMF All Star Band. It was truly a moving tribute to brother Malcolm.

hrongs of people gathered together in Harlem for the two-day grand celebration of the 41st year of HARLEM WEEK -one of the most memorable and influential festivals in our nation. This year’s theme, “Celebrating the Journey: Embracing the Future,” encompassed everything beautiful about one of the world’s most popular communities. HARLEM WEEK 2015 was a spectacular display of the continual growth of an event that started as a one-day event in 1974 that has grown to a month-long celebration! Over these two days alone over 80 artists performed in almost every music genre ranging from Jazz to Hip Hop to R&B to Gospel to Salsa to Reggae to World Music. No matter where you are from you can be a “Harlemite” over the weekend at the events of HARLEM WEEK. On Saturday, August 15, 2015 on West 135th Street from St. Nicholas Avenue over to Malcolm X Boulevard in the village of Harlem from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Harlem pride was on display during one of HARLEM WEEK’S largest public events, “SUMMER IN THE CITY,” where attendees enjoyed a diverse array of activities including Day 1 of the NYC Children’s Festival with rides, games, exhibits for children and families sports clinics including basketball, boxing, swimming and tennis exhibitions and entertainment by children, adults and seniors for all people. The day also included the Higher Education Fair and Expo featuring over 68 colleges and universities with a special focus on Historical Black Colleges and Uni-

versities (HBCU) who shared information on financial aid, special programs and the benefits of attending a Black College, the Fashion Flava Show featuring the best in urban and creative fashion, and more.

Throughout the day attendees were able to shop until they dropped at the International Vendors Village comprising vendors and exhibitors selling arts & crafts, clothing, jewelry, food and much more. The day was filled with inspirational speeches from clergy, elected officials, community leaders, and families all echoing the theme of the day which was “Our Lives Matter” featuring special performances from Alvin Ailey Dance Company, Nona Hendryx, Vy Higginsen’s Mama Foundation Gospel For Teens, NK5, The Last Poets, Impact Repertory Theatre Company, music from the DJ’s of WBLS-FM, and many others.

That afternoon, all eyes focused on the great stage where an inspirational salute to unity and healing took place during the kick off of the year-round “Our Lives Matter” campaign that was launched on August 15, 2015. Attendees

were asked to “bring yourself and your respect and love for all people to the rally.” The good-will movement’s goal is to bring together faith-based, civic, humanitarian, youth, and educational organizations, as well as unions, media and other institutions, to end senseless violence in the U.S. and beyond.

You could feel the excitement mounting as a special award was presented to the National Action Network (NAN) and accepted on behalf of the revered civil rights organization by NAN’s president, the Rev. Al Sharpton, as NAN prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary fighting for justice for all. In his passionate closing remarks, Assemblyman Keith Wright said, “Let’s leave

Additional music and giveaways were provided by radio 103.9FM. Thousands attended HARLEM DAY on Sunday, August 16, which took place on 135th Street from St. Nicholas Avenue to 5th Avenue with four stages of entertainment, Day 2 of the Children’s Festival, the Upper Manhattan Auto Show with over 130 classic, antique and new automobiles, motorcycles and other vehicles on

display, the NYC Health Village, hosted by Harlem Hospital, which provided free health testing and screenings, and again a wide array of vendors and exhibitors selling items from food to artwork to jewelry. Some of the featured performers on the various stages included R&B artists Vivian Green, Kenny Lattimore, Kim and Reggie Harris, and Angela Johnson with Harlem’s own celebrated producer/director Ray Chew lending his musical support and expertise, New Jersey Performing Arts Center Jazz for Teens, actor/singer Blake Carrington, Salvation Army Phil Ramone Orchestra for Kids, A Back To School Fashion Show and many more.

There was also recognition of the 50th anniversary of the civil rights leader’s death, which was marked with music, art, and spoken word topped off with his daughters receiving HARLEM WEEK’s coveted 2nd Annual Basil A. Paterson Award presented to them

by Basil’s son, David Paterson.

In addition there were special posthumous musical tributes to jazz legends Ornette Coleman and ”Little Jimmy” Scott.

HARLEM WEEK 2015 events concluded on Saturday, August 22 at 8:30 a.m. with the Percy E. Sutton Harlem 5k Run & Walk and Children’s/ Youth Race in partnership with the New York Road Runners supported by the NAACP, Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E. and other organizations followed by a “DJ Salute to the Icons. Plus the Hip Hop Hall of Fame & Museum presented iconic DJs and dancers. The day ended with the HARLEM WEEK/ ImageNation Outdoor Music Film Festival in St. Nicholas Park with the film screening “Finding Fela” featuring Nigerian Artist Fela Kuti.

es, qualifying for the TCS New York City Marathon or just enjoying the sites of Harlem while improving their health.

Also starting with the runners, hundreds of members of the community participated in a 1.5 mile walk through Harlem. Each year the walk calls attention to an important issue in the com-

mission by providing a unique opportunity for girls who are rising seniors in high schools across the five boroughs. Through their participation in the program, the girls learn about running, build self-esteem and confidence, and develop key leadership skills, while training for a 5K race at the end of the summer. Participants who complete the program and are accepted to college also receive a $1,500 scholarship toward their school of choice. This year, 46 girls took on the 2015 Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run. Harlem Tourism Board members joined the Walk

munity. This year the theme for the run and the walk is “Our Lives Matter”, which is a year-round initiative to bring together faith-based civic, humanitarian, youth, educational institutions, unions and media to address the never-ending loss of lives throughout America.

Both the Run and the Walk began at 8:30AM, and a new element of a Kids Run began at 10:15AM. The kids run has been created to encourage youth to be active and participate in running.

Participating in the 5K were girls in NYRR’s Run for the Future program. Run for the Future is a high-touch, high-impact summer program that fulfills NYRR’s

Back-to-School Tips to Keep Kids Healthy and Safe

(StatePoint) Back-to-school prep means more than a trip to the office supply store. Help kids stay strong, healthy and safe this school year by putting wellness front and center.

“Thinking about back-to-school now can help parents keep kids on track for a healthy summer and start to school,” says Dr. Sandra Hassink, MD, FAAP, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

With that in mind, Hassink recommends taking the following steps.

Ease into the School Schedule Ease the back-to-school transition by keeping bedtime and meals scheduled during the summer and adjusting timing as school approaches. If your child has been going to bed later than usual, begin adjusting his or her bedtime earlier toward the end of summer. Depending on age, children and teens need between 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep nightly.

For young children, arranging to see their new classroom and meet their new teacher before school starts can calm first day jitters. Go over the school schedule with your child, including how she will get to school and what the plans are for after school time.

Schedule a Pediatric Visit The back-to-school season is a

good time for scheduling a pediatric exam. Create a list of items you want to discuss with your child’s pediatrician. This list should include ensuring your child is up-todate on vaccinations, a crucial part of preventive care.

It’s a good idea to build a medical home with a pediatrician by sticking with one doctor or medical

practice throughout childhood and adolescence. The doctor will be better informed of your child’s medical history and aware of any emerging problems.

Beyond medical testing, pediatricians are well-equipped to counsel patients and parents on emotional and social issues, as well as issues that often crop up during adolescence, such as smoking, drugs, drinking, sexual activity and depression.

“Parents can ask a pediatrician about anything related to the care of their child or teen, medical or not,” says Dr Hassink. “The visit can be a good way to bring up these issues.”

Consider Sports Sports can foster confidence, cooperation and healthy habits, and the start of the school year brings many opportunities to join various programs.

Hydration, nutrition and proper conditioning are important for any

sport, especially those with intense training in warm weather. Schedule a sports physical with your pediatrician to discuss your child’s overall health and how to prevent injuries.

Talk Safety If your child will be walking to school, travel the route with him to assess its safety. Find out about traffic patterns and crossing guards.

Teach your child safety rules like looking both ways. If possible, have your child commute with an older sibling or neighbor. If your child will be riding a bike or skateboard, be sure he wears a helmet. Review basic rules for safer riding. Bus riders should also be mindful of safety rules, like remaining in one’s seat and listening to the driver.

MetroPlus Health Plan Featured On Affordable Healthcare Panel at HARLEM WEEK New York Economic Development Day Conference

A

s the country moves into the third year of Obamacare, The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce’s Health Committee convened an Affordable Healthcare program at the NYC Economic Day Conference. The program topic was new and important aspects of the Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) benefits for individuals and businesses. Roger Milliner, Deputy Executive Director of Marketing for MetroPlus Health Plan was a featured panelist with Michelle Drayton-Robertson, RN, MH, Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice and Palliative Care and Paul Zurlo, Senior Director of Business Development at EmblemHealth. The panel discussion was moderated by Patricia Rickets, VP of Programs for the Greater Harlem Chamber.

Roger Milliner reviewed the new basic health care program now featured in the Affordable Care Act, the Essential Plan (EP).

This option allows States to offer free or low-cost health insurance to adults earning too much to qualify for Medicaid. He stated, “Only two States, New York and Minnesota

have elected to offer the Essential Plan and MetroPlus is one of the health plans offering it to our consumers”. He also discussed the 2015 Open Enrollment (OP) period and the projected 2016 health insurance premiums rates. Some OP highlights; enrollment through the NYS Marketplace Health Exchange has increased more than two-fold and more than 89% of enrollees reported uninsured at the time of their application; 86% of New Yorkers who enrolled in Qualified Health Plans in 2014 renewed their coverage in 2015; the individual health insurance

premium rate for 2016 remains nearly 50% lower than before the establishment of New York’s Health Exchange.

Michelle Drayton-Robertson pointed out the complexities of the ACA and some of the difficulties navigating through the system.

She defined what end-of-life palliative care and hospice services are and why they are so important in our community. Ms. Drayton-Robertson indicted that palliative care pay management and hospice Medicare are available through the ACA. She discussed how the visiting nurses service is disseminating information on these services to groups and individuals who may be in need and not aware of what is offered.

Paul Zurlo specifically discussed the small employer (SHOP) plan offered through the ACA. He pointed out that the number of enrollments was lower for small businesses then in other programs offered through the NYS Marketplace. In the small group market he indicated that the ACA will expand January 1, 2016 to businesses with 250 employees from the previous 200-employee limit.

At the Economic Day Conference luncheon, the Chambers’ 2016 scholarship recipients were acknowledged and saluted.

MetroPlus’ sponsored student is Shardae Scipio, from SUNY Potsdam, who has a BA in Sociology with a minor in Nutrition.

MetroPlus Health Plan has been involved in the community for over twenty–five years, providing free or low-cost government-sponsored health care to those in need. They offer health insurance programs to children and adults, based on family income level and size. Some of the plans offered include Medicaid Managed Care and Child Health Plus. MetroPlus also offers several Medicare Advantage plans for people who are eligible for Medicare and receive full or partial Medicaid benefits and for people with HIV/AIDS eligible for Medicare with or without Medicaid. Berenstain Bears Is Adorable Family Fun

A

musical that is fun, heartwarming and appropriate for the entire family is the Berenstain Bears in “Family Matters, the Musical” playing at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center located at 248 W 60th Street between Amsterdam and West End Ave. The Berenstain Bears has the beloved characters of Brother, Sister, Mama, Papa, Grandma and Grandpa bear.

The young bears are being taught a lot of important life lessons about not talking to strangers, being a good student in school, focusing on homework

that the curious, sometimes scared, sometimes reckless bear cubs are being taught.

The musical also talks about eating healthy snacks.

Everyone know that bears like sweets and these baby cubs and Papa bear are no different, but they get to see the aftermath of eating too many sweets and the negative results that can happen. and studying for tests.

There are lesson about the importance of honesty and Brother learns a hard lesson of what happens when you let playing sports mean more to you than your school work.

This musical is absolutely wonderful and should be enjoyed by toddlers and young children. When you go there is even an area directly in front of the stage where there is carpeting and parents and toddlers can sit and watch the show up-close and personal.

“Family Matters, The Musical” has delightful songs, some very funny moments, and

is just a wholesome family experience that you will want to share again and again, especially if you have young children. The production has been playing for some time and is in an open-ended run. Make plans to see it and share these life lessons and encouragement to eat healthy and exercise on a regular basis with your loved ones.

The characters’ bear costumes and makeup are adorable and completely succeed in making the show’s often young audience smile, laugh and feel comfortable as they hear the life lessons

The Awakening of the Third Eye

aoist masters of old considered the third eye one’s guide through the invisible world. Human vision is limited and three dimensional; the third eye provides intuitive insight and vision into the fourth dimension, which is the pathway to spiritual enlightenment. The material world can be very stressful and illusory; the awakening of the third eye is the first step in seeing past the matrix.

The mind must be in an Alpha state

for the third eye to be awakened. One of the advantages of filling in for Sister Virginia Cotton? It makes me study more to maintain the rich legacy of the World Famous Gospel Legends Program, on WHCR-90.3 FM. On Tuesday mornings, I have to go back into the milk crate to bring the music of the past and juxtapose it with the current-day songs. It’s quite a challenge.

This past Thursday morning on The 3G Experience on WHCR-90.3 FM, I had the pleasure of having Sister Monifa Maat as a guest. She always brings healthy topics to the table for us to learn from and eat better. Then

our good friend Beverly Wright and Choir Director D.H. White dropped in for a visit. We enjoyed the fellowship and the spiritual high that was created by all present. D.H. White promised he would come again.

Thanks to Mt. Calvary Baptist Church for inviting me to their cookout last Thursday. The menu was fabulous – this after being with Sis. Maat, who would have castigated me royally for the food I enjoyed. Thanks to Pastor Roberts, Deacon Anderson and Sis. Scott for your hospitality. Just don’t tell Sister Monifa Maat what I ate!

“Lillian’s Right to Vote”

H

ow many leaves are on the tree outside your window?

That’s a question you may not be able to answer. How could you even count them all? Would you ever get an answer that’s right?

It’s a silly question, for sure, and probably not very important. In the new book “Lillian’s Right to Vote” by Jonah Winter & Shane W. Evans, you’ll see why someone would even ask.

Lillian stands at the bottom of a “very steep hill.” It’s Voting Day and she’s going to take advantage of her rights.

As she looks up the hill, she sees things – not just a hill, but a slave auction. There are her great-great-grandparents: Elijah is wearing chains and Sarah is holding a baby. Lillian sees that they’re standing near a court-

house where only white men could vote.

It’s a long way up that hill and, as she climbs, Lillian sees more history: once a baby at that auction, her great-grandfather Edmund grew up to pick cotton.

He didn’t have any more rights than his own parents did – at least not until after the Civil War. Lillian can see Great-Grandpa Edmund, post-War, on his way to vote for the very first time.

He approaches the polls, looking dignified in his finest clothes; Great-Grandma Ida is there, too, but she can’t vote yet. That, as Lillian knows, is many years away.

Then the hill seems to become higher, and the climb gets harder. Lillian sees her grandpa, Isaac, but he’s not voting because of a poll tax that he has no hope of paying. She hears her Uncle

Levi, telling stories about impossible questions that had to be answered before anyone with brown skin could step up to cast a vote. She sees the same angry faces that surrounded her when she was a child, and women finally were allowed to vote.

White women, that is. Not people like Lillian.

Stopping in the middle of the hill, Lillian remembers. Once, she registered to vote and had to take a test that she didn’t pass.

People were hurt and killed over votes. She starts walking again, soon reaching the voting place.

And Lillian steps to the door…

Did you ever buy a book for the kids that you ended up keeping for yourself? That’s what could happen once you’ve found “Lillian’s Right to Vote” – and

that’s okay. I think you’ll understand it more than your children will anyhow.

There’s no doubt in my mind that kids will love this book. Sharp-eyed children, those who wonder what the presidential-candidate fuss is about, will get a basic history of the importance of voting. Children in this books’ target age (3-to6-year-olds) will appreciate the story that authors Jonah Winter & Shane W. Evans tell here. For sure, they’ll all enjoy the illustrations.

The real goodness in this book, however, is that becoming a children’s picture story doesn’t at all diminish its power. Indeed, “Lillian’s Right to Vote” is ten feet tall, and it’s something neither you nor your child will be able to leave.

Jazz legends, Hip Hop innovators, and a melting pot of sounds have proliferated in the borough for decades. While the music thrived, venues didn’t: thousands of live music seats in dozens of clubs and theaters were lost in the Bronx since the 1970s. Yet, to this day, artists from a wide array of cultural backgrounds make the Bronx their home, creating new work, collaborating across genres and generations, and innovating music forms in one of the most diverse counties in the nation. The Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation will develop the Bronx Music Heritage Center (BMHC), a perfor-

mance and community space to showcase and amplify the Bronx’s rich musical legacy, scheduled for

completion in 2017.

My office is working hard on addressing the arrays of challenges facing affordability; these include our fight against tenant harassment, our push to strengthen rent regulations, our efforts to properly prepare residents for upcoming housing lotteries, as well as our approach to advancing non-traditional and underdeveloped locations for affordable housing development through our role in the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP).

This approach must be matched with a financial commitment that supports the borough-wide creation and preservation of affordable housing.”

Funding from Borough President Adams went to two Mitchell-Lama co-ops in Gravesend, including $238,000 to Contello Towers No. 2 for energy retrofitting and $200,000 to Highlawn Terrace for exterior renovations.

Borough President Adams apportioned

$100,000 to Howard Houses, a New York City Housing Authority development in Brownsville, for the purchase of security cameras, as part of his larger effort to advance public safety in the surrounding community.

Other affordable housing projects receiving funding from Borough President Adams in Fiscal Year 2016 include $500,000 to the Fifth Avenue Committee to build 50 units of 100% affordable housing at a mix of incomes in Sunset Park, while also supporting the expansion of the Sunset Park Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, and $300,000 to Crown Gardens Housing Corporation to provide plaza waterproofing for the complex in Crown Heights, which also benefitted from $500,000 last year for a heating plant replacement.

Following remarks by recipients, Borough President Adams presented each of them with an honorary check with the seal of Brooklyn Borough Hall for their projects and one oversized check, made out to “One Brooklyn,” for affordable housing throughout the borough.

arlier this month, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams unveiled over $3 million in Fiscal Year 2016 funds from Brooklyn Borough Hall to construct and preserve hundreds of affordable housing units across Brooklyn. Joined by local tenants, affordable housing developers, and community leaders, he made the announcement outside 442 Logan Street, an affordable housing development in East New York owned and managed by Mutual Housing Association of New York, Inc. (MHANY), which will receive part of a $500,000 allocation in funding for needed renovations to 77 total units; the organization was also granted $250,000 to construct new affordable housing for their Pacific Linwood project in Crown Heights and East New York. Borough President Adams spoke about the imperative of addressing the borough’s affordable housing crisis, standing alongside giant checks symbolic of his investment in creating and maintaining much-needed units for middle and low-income Brooklynites.

he Youth Empowerment Institute Inc. along with Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County Inc. will be holding its Third Annual Long Island African American Heritage Parade and 33rd TAHAD Festival on Saturday, August 29, 2015. The parade route will start on 322 Nassau Road, Roosevelt New York (Western Beef) parking lot and will end on Nicholas Court, Hempstead NY where the festival will be held.

The Third Annual Long Island African American Parade and the 33rd TAHAD Festival is set to be the driving force in strengthening families, bringing unity in the community, and embracing culture. We are thrilled to have Meli’sa Morgan who is

a 2014 Soul Train Music Award Nominee, R&B Songstress and was also featured on TV One’s Unsung. Morgan is known for her 80’s hit “Do Me Baby” and will be our main performer at the festival. The parade and festival is set to host a variety of performances that will have you dancing and singing throughout the day. There will be a variety of fine cuisines that will be served by our vendors.

A Health Pavilion will be available for you to sign up for health insurance and free health screenings will be available to the community. The African American Heritage Parade and Festival objectives are to showcase the richness of the African American community on Long Island, educate our youth and allow them to experience African American pride by embracing its legacy. Our Seven Grand Marshalls will be introducing the Seven Principals of Kwanzaa with the purpose of contributing in building and reinforcing family, community and culture among African American people as well as Africans throughout the world African community.

These values are called the Nguzo Saba, which in Swahili means the Seven Principles. Developed

by Dr. Karenga, the Nguzo Saba stands at the heart of the origin and meaning of Kwanzaa, for it is these values that are not only

the building blocks for community but also serve to reinforce and enhance them.
