Columbia University Celebrates

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH DOLORES PRIDA Cuban-American journalist, playwright, activist, and proud East Harlemite. Prida’s plays and poems were largely focused on the Latino experience; many of her characters were Latinas struggling against repressive gender ideologies and racism in the United States. As a journalist, Prida wrote with acuity and wit about the joys and challenges of the U.S. Latino experience and published a popular advice column titled Dolores Dice (Dolores Says) that earned her the title Latina “Dear Abby.” She was part of a group of Cuban-Americans between Cubans on the island and the diaspora. After Prida’s death in January 2013, President Obama wrote in a letter to her family, “With conviction, compassion, and humor, Dolores used her gifts to connect with people across the Latino community and around our country.” Columbia’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library will host a panel discussion of her life and work Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. To learn more, visit library.columbia.edu/events.

his past weekend the Apollo theater presented the 3rd Annual Harlem Healthy Soul Festival, which was a wellness event for the entire family.

The day long festivities included a farmers market,

healthy cooking demonstrations, health screenings, entertainment and activities for youth.

Her hats were a part of the premiere collection of awesome tuxedos for ladies and gentlemen designed by Dwight Eubanks.

The top hats were whimsical and fun with tall feathers and were paired with bold polka dotted tuxedos.

The fedora was cranberry-colored straw. They made a very fashion forward statement in men’s hats.

Dwight Eubanks, well known from television shows, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” and “Botched” is multi-talented. He is a strong designer with a unique point of view.

He presented an avant-garde collection of tuxedos that are a must have.

The collection was shown in two parts on two separate evenings. Monday at “The Fillmore Room” and Wednesday on the roof-

Raising the Minimum Wage Has a Negligible Effect on Jobs

s states, cities and municipalities across the country raise wages to improve the lives of working people, it is worth highlighting how such moves affect low-income communities of color.

Many argue that higher wages hurt job growth. Here’s why that thinking is wrong.

The Congressional Budget Office, in an extensive review of the available research on the effects of the minimum wage, found that as many studies found job gains as found job losses, with the average estimate being that increases in the minimum wage have no measurable effect on employment. Digging more deeply into the studies’ various methodologies, the CBO noted that the best and most convincing studies looked specifically at instances in which minimum wages were increased in localities where bordering jurisdictions did not raise their minimum wage. The CBO found that in those studies, no significant employment effects were observed in the localities

that raised their minimum wage compared with employment in the bordering communities. On that basis, the current consensus among economists is that raising the minimum wage has negligible effects on employment.

During the expansion of private-sector employment that began in 2010, and is now at record length, many states and localities have raised their minimum wage.

Despite this, the sector most sensitive to increases in the minimum wage-the fast-food restaurant sector-has seen the greatest job growth of any sector. Job growth in those states with higher minimum wages is not lagging job growth in states that have failed to raise their minimum wage; again, this is true when looking at neighboring states with different minimum wages.

It continues to be the case that minimum wages are presented as a creator or destroyer of jobs. In reality, job growth is driven by rising incomes and growing customer bases that demand products, prompting businesses to respond by hiring more people to increase their output and serve the growing customer demand. Low wages do not create jobs or expand customer bases.

An error often repeated within the black community confuses the notion of not employed with un-

employed. These are two separate concepts, and economists use them to understand the policy solution.

The black community suffers from a very high unemployment rate-the share of people actively trying to find work. Nationally, while the number of unemployed people per job opening has come down, it remains higher than when the labor market peaks at slightly fewer than two unemployed people per job opening. The black community also suffers from a low labor-force participation rate, which is the share of people either employed or looking for work-those who are active members of the labor market.

Because of high unemployment rates, black working people are far more likely than white working people to accept low-wage work.

Among households with full-time year-round working people, 9.2 percent of black families live in poverty compared with 3.4 percent of white families; among female-headed households in the black community, it’s 18.1 percent.

At every level of educational attainment, black income is less than white income, just as at every level of educational attainment, black unemployment rates are higher than those of whites. Lowering black people’s wages will not close the

unemployment gap faced by black working families.

Blacks will work for less, but that doesn’t mean blacks will work for anything. Some are not active in the labor market because of discouragement over limited job openings. However, many are discouraged not over job openings but over wages. Non-employment includes both those who are unemployed-actively looking for work-and those not in the labor force at all, such as young people who would rather pursue more education than take low wages, mothers who can’t afford transportation and child care expenses at low wages, and non-custodial fathers who wouldn’t net an income at low wages after paying for transportation and child support.

Raising wages will increase black labor-force participation.

More black working people will continue to be engaged in job search if the jobs they are chasing pay higher wages. Working and being poor can be a poverty trap itself.

Those who want to help the black community should work to raise the wages of the jobs that black people find themselves locked into.

Raising wages for black working families means that money will support the growth and survival of businesses in their community.

Home Buying In Harlem: Be Prepared to Buy Now

an anyone afford to buy a home in Harlem? With current home values still escalating beyond an affordable amount for most low to moderate income buyers, the answer remains a resounding - no.

There seems to be little recourse for Harlem residents except to continue paying a monthly rent that is also equally outrageous. Although renting does provide a basic necessity, it does not provide any monetary investment or tax deduction benefit.

Suppose you have been living in your apartment for at least 10 years

and paying approximately $1,000 per month. You would have already spent $120,000 in rent! Imagine what you could have owned by now. But instead you have nothing to show for that time except having a roof over your head, which is in itself a good thing.

However, the main point to homeownership still centers around three primary factors. (1) You must have a steady job and consistent income.

Lenders want to see at least 24 months employment history in the same career. If you have changed occupations, a new 24-month clock will

begin. You may have to wait some additional time before applying for a mortgage.

(2) You must have a solid credit history.

Lenders again want to see 24 months clean credit history.

That will mean no delinquent accounts for the past two years. They will want to see at least three to four active credit accounts and usually a minimum credit score of 650 or better depending on the mortgage product.

(3) You must have adequate assets for the down payment and closing costs. This can be a

problem for most first time buyers today because your monthly household expenses are prohibiting you from setting an aggressive savings goal. Here is where using a monthly household budget can assist you by helping you to identify and eliminate wasteful spending in order to achieve your goal of homeownership.

Participants enjoyed a sunny day in the 70’s with a cool breeze. The first annual African American Day Parade

was held on September 15, 1969. The parade was started by two organizations, Afro-American Day and the United Federation of Black Community Oranizations.

The founders of the parade are Livingston Wingate and Conrad S. Peter. The first Grand Marshal was Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. The African American Day Parade was formed as a not-for-profit organization. The purpose of the parade is to provide an opportunity for African-Americans and others to join together on a Special Day to highlight our history and salute African people throughout the world for their outstanding achievments. Harlem was selected as the site for the parade due to its large representation of African people and it is the Black capital of America.

A Toast to the People for The Last Holiday – MLK Day

ake a toast to the people that helped establish Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday as a Federal Holiday.

Stevie Wonder was the drum major of the movement to establish the holiday. On October 31, 1980, he began his Hotter than July Tour with that sole purpose in mind.

Famed musician Gil Scott Heron accompanied him on the tour and in his Memoir, The Last Holiday, conveys to us his memories of Stevie Wonder, the person, and of the tour. He writes of Stevie Wonder’s determination and shares Stevie’s words with us as he recalls a moment from the tour: “There I was at the halftime show, looking up and down the field, and I could see for the first time. I could see what this brother had seen long before, what really needed to be done. We all took the stage. The crowd continued to chant: “Martin Luther King Day, we took a holiday!” Stevie stepped

People have asked, Why Stevie Wonder, as an artist? Why should I be involved in this great cause?

I’m Stevie Wonder the artist, yes, but I’m Steveland Morris, a man, a citizen of this country, and a human being.

As an artist, my purpose is to communicate the message that can better improve the lives of all of us. I’d like to ask all of you just for one moment, if you will, to be silent and just to think and hear

Dr. Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929 and was assassinated at 6:01pm on a hotel balcony in Memphis Tennessee on April 4, 1968. He spent over 13 years fighting for civil rights, most of which you and I enjoy today because of his determination.

During that time he was not only a minister but also leader of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, founded the SCLC and was its first President, received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating segregation with non-violence, spoke out against the Vietnam War and was planning a Poor People’s Campaign at the time of his death. Posthumously Dr. King was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom

and the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor. His birthday became a Federal Holiday in 1986, with much credit going to Stevie Wonder and the millions of people who supported his idea. I will leave you with Stevie Wonder’s words from his Happy Birthday Song to Dr. King: “The time is overdue, for people like me and you.

Who know the way to truth is love and unity to all God’s children. It should be a great event and the whole day should be spent, in full remembrance of those who lived and died for the oneness of all people. So let us begin. We know that love can win. Let it out don’t hold it in. Sing it as loud as you can. Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday.”

Think of Dr. King often and celebrate him on January 15, 2016. Remember to celebrate the two men who set out on a musical tour to ensure his memory lives on.

HistoryMakers Bring Black Role Models to Schools

arlier tis month, more than 400 Black role models will visit students at schools in 67 cities across 32 states as part of The HistoryMakers Back to School Day. The annual day of service brings Black leaders from as many industries as possible to speak with middle and high school students about their lives and career paths.

This year’s Back to School Day HistoryMakers include Tom Burrell,

founder of the largest Black-owned marketing firm in the country, actor Lou Gossett Jr., Ernest Green of Little Rock Nine fame, author and chair of the Foundation for the National Archives, A’lelia Bundles, and many more.

“What we’re really wanting to do is…to start bringing this into schools. Kids are still struggling with role models, who to look up to, finding a path,” said Julieanne

Richardson, founder and executive director of The HistoryMakers.

“The program is way more impactful than I could have imagined, because what I didn’t understand at the time was that the schools could not reach out and touch the people that we were bringing in on their own.

And they’re looking for things to motivate their students.”

The HistoryMakers bills itself as the largest African American video oral history collection. For the first time, thanks to a $1.6 million grant, its digital archive will be donated to any Chicago public school that wants access, plus teacher training to make the most of the resource. The archive will be complete in 2017; but it is currently available and includes hundreds of interviews, adding up to more than 2,000 hours of firsthand accounts from people such as President Barack Obama, Julian

Bond, and Diahann Carroll. Access to the archive usually requires a $30-per-month membership with The HistoryMakers.

“Our digital archive is just groundbreaking, because at the click of fingertips, we’ll be able to put all this information in an online resource that the world has yet to see,” said Richardson. “We really want our digital archives in every school in the United States because there’s so little known about the Black experience. We are in a time now where we still hear ‘Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer,’ as if no other Black people existed.”

According to Richardson, the schools they work with that already use the database find it to be a great supplement to their classrooms.

“The digital archive is good for language arts, social studies, STEM – we have 211 of the nation’s top

scientists on the digital archive,” she said. “One of the schools was using it to teach vocabulary in context. At another school, a drama teacher was using it to teach accents.”

Now in its 16th year, The HistoryMakers conducts research on accomplished Black professionals and records interviews for posterity.

This is the sixth year for The HistoryMakers Back to School Day. The visits often extend beyond this annual event, and relationships develop between The HistoryMakers and the schools they visit. “[Journalist] John X. Miller in North Carolina has been going back to the school every month,” Richardson said. “Our HistoryMakers have actually helped fund schools or students. One of our scientists took one of the kids under mentorship, and now that young man is going to be going to college.”

Richardson’s group is based in

Chicago, but collaborates with hundreds of schools across the country.

She hopes to continue to grow both the archive and Back to School Day, and offer guidance to as many Black youth as possible.

“We all need role models, we all need to see people who stood for something. I’m an integration and affirmative action child, and I benefited from that,” she said. “But for me to be seeing young people who are doing worse than I could’ve ever imagined – there’s something terribly wrong. I really believe that the Black community needs to get back involved with itself in this way, for our kids.”

Ways to Nurture Early Childhood Development (StatePoint) From the nursery to the playroom, playtime should be safe and fun. But experts say that beyond these considerations, these spaces should incorporate elements that promote early childhood development.

National Child Health Day: Getting Every Child Off to a Healthy Start

(StatePoint) October 5 is National Child Health Day, a federal observance started nearly 90 years ago to encourage Americans to focus on the health and well-being of children of all ages. That includes helping expecting mothers plan for a healthy arrival of their soon-to-be little ones.

If you’re an expectant mother, you’re likely already making your child’s health a priority by scheduling regular visits with your obstetrician, adjusting your diet and limiting certain

activities during your pregnancy. But have you thought about important considerations for delivery day? For example, skinto-skin contact with your newborn immediately after delivery can help your baby get off to a healthy start.

The International Breastfeeding Centre lists numerous benefits of skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby after delivery. These benefits include a happier baby with a more elevated blood sugar level, a more stable tempera-

ture, heart rate and breathing rate.

The benefits are not fleeting, however. Mothers who have skin-to-skin contact with their babies are more likely to breastfeed in the first one to four months, and tend to breastfeed longer, according to a report from the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group, analyzing 34 studies of more than 2,000 mothers and their babies.

Traditionally, skin-to-skin time has been limited to natural vaginal births. In instances where a mother has given birth by cesarean section, the baby is often sent to an incubator before a mother can hold or see her baby.

Today, nearly one in three U.S. women now gives birth via C-section, according to the CDC. That equals more than one million moms annually who are denied the benefits of

skin-on-skin contact with their newborn.

Fortunately, many hospitals now offer a solution in the form of a “family-centered birth experience.” Also known as a “gentle cesarean,” a family-centered birth experience includes certain aspects of a natural childbirth during a C-section operation, including allowing moms to watch the delivery, (but not the C-section procedure) as well as hold their babies immediately after delivery.

Traditionally, C-section

deliveries are blocked off by an opaque screen. New options such as a family viewing C-section drape allow moms to witness their babies’ first breath through a see-through window, while still maintaining an essential surgical barrier.

If you’re planning to have a C-section and want to have a family-centered birth experience, do your research to find a hospital that offers the service and can deliver it the way you want.

Ensuring skin-on-skin time

with the baby will require additional staff and rearranging of equipment in the delivery room, as well as altered placement of the EKG leads on your body.

Discuss these details with your doctor beforehand to ensure the hospital can make the necessary arrangements.

Opting for a family-centered birth experience will require some additional upfront planning during pregnancy, but the bond created between mother and child will be a lifelong memory for the family.

ongressional analysis of the state of Black health in the U.S. offers comprehensive legislative and policy solutions to improve health outcomes in communities of color The Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust released The 2015 Kelly Report on Health Disparities in America, an official Congressional analysis of the state of African American health in the U.S. that offers a blueprint for reversing negative health trends in communities of color.

The Kelly Report brings together Mem-

bers of Congress, medical professionals and public health thought leaders to examine the root causes and impact of health disparities in America and provide a comprehensive set of legislative and policy recommendations to address them. Compiled

by CBC Health Braintrust Chair Dr. Robin Kelly, the report is a call-to-action for Congress to make improving health outcomes in diverse communities a top priority. The contributors to the report include Congressional Black Caucus Chair G.K. Butterfield, Na-

tional Urban League President & CEO Marc H. Morial, former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, and HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health Dr. J. Nadine Gracia.

The Kelly Report outlines the grim state of Black Health in America, with African Americans facing higher rates of mortality than any other racial or ethnic group for eight of the top 10 causes of death. Other startling statistics: • African American cancer rates are 10% higher than white Americans • Blacks are nearly twice

as likely to have diabetes than whites • African Americans are six times more likely than whites to be victims of homicide • While Blacks account for just 13% of the total U.S. population, they account for nearly half of all new HIV infections • African Americans make up more than onethird of all U.S. patients receiving dialysis for kidney failure.

deep and persistent, spanning from cradle to the grave, as evidenced by the higher rates of chronic disease and premature death. The Autumnal Equinox

ednesday September 23rd was the first day of autumn also known as the Autumnal Equinox. This is the when day and night in many parts of the world are almost the same length with day being just a bit longer.

Taoist use the five elements to identify wellness strategies for each season.

The threat of terrorist activities shadows our daily existence now that the world has become less

friendly. The weather and other natural disasters have wreaked havoc on communities, displacing families and destroying property! How are you managing? Maybe you have decided to start attending church for spiritual guidance or made a decision to become more observant of your surroundings or maybe you have just made the decision not to let it bother you and to go about your life as usual. The choice you have made is a personal one, but on the real side . . . Are you prepared? Prepared for what you say?

Well, I was a Girl Scout . . . yep sold cookies and earned lots

of badges too! A Girl Scout’s motto is “Be Prepared.” We were ready for anything.

These times remind me of another equally ominous time in our history, The Bay of Pigs. At the time I was a young girl (scout), but I remember the preparations for war. Our parents were instructed to create a bomb shelter in case of a nuclear attack and stock up on food, water and other necessities that would be needed in a time of war. At school we were drilled daily to seek cover under our desks to avoid falling debris and quietly and immediately do as instructed by the

Now, no one wants to think for a minute about the possibility of a thermonuclear winter, biochemical warfare or smart bombs, but like anything in life it pays to “Be Prepared.” So instead of fluffing off and ignoring the possibilities of a disaster or emergency “situation,” why not take time to sit down with your family to create a logistical, communication and survival plan to be implemented in an

emergency situation?

Do your children know where to find the first aid kit? Do you even have a first aid kit? How about teaching them to take care of one another in a crisis situation if a parent isn’t available? It just makes good sense to have a plan. They say only the strong survive, it that’s true, you can bet they are prepared.

“Hoops to Hippos! True Stories of a Basketball Star on Safari!

eanut butter and jelly.

Bacon and eggs. Rock & roll, Mario & Luigi, whip & nae nae, Batman & Robin. Some things just naturally go together; they belong in pairs.

And for NBA player and author Boris Diaw, there are two things he likes to add together. Read “Hoops to Hippos” (with Kitson Jazynka), and see what they are.

A long time ago, when Boris Diaw was a little boy growing up in Bordeaux, France, his mother took him and his brother to Senegal to visit the boys’ father. Neither Boris nor his brother, Marcus, had ever been to Africa and they were excited! Boris wanted more than anything to see wild animals in Africa; he bought a camera

while he was traveling, and he hoped to take lots of pictures.

On that trip, he saw zebras and giraffes, monkeys, hippos, birds, and warthogs. He never saw lions or tigers then – but he wasn’t done traveling! He still wanted to see the Big Cats but first, Diaw grew up to become a professional basketball player in France, then moved to the U.S. to play for the San Antonio Spurs. After his rookie year in Texas, he returned to Senegal again, to catch wild animals with his camera.

Diaw snapped pictures of hyenas and chameleons. He saw a herd of elephants and “noticed a baby elephant standing in between the legs of his mom. He was so small!” Hiking in the bush, he saw impalas and he played a

traditional African bush game.

Diaw was also startled by a huge African buffalo.

On later trips to Africa, Diaw saw lions and rhinos, and he steered clear of hippos and crocodiles, both of which can run quite fast. He and his group were once stalked by a pack of hungry hyenas who wanted a piece of a basketball star! While in India, Diaw learned a lot about tigers before he saw a mother tiger and her cubs in the wild. And he noted how animals and basketball players have a lot in common: it’s safer, easier, and sometimes more fun to work together as a team.

In your child’s life, he’ll have many interests. One of them may become her career but in “Hoops to Hippos,” she’ll see that it’s possible to have many passions.

Though, obviously, basketball is a subject that author Boris Diaw (with Kitson Jazynka) loves, wildlife and photography really are the focus of this book. In it, Diaw explains what it takes to hunt animals with his camera and, among tales of spotting creatures in their natural habitats, he also shares with young readers the thrilling adventures he’s had on safari.

Conservation-minded parents will be happy to know that Diaw also carefully explains why it’s important to protect those animals he seeks.

Belmont Commons- Housing by SoBRO

I

n a ribbon-cutting ceremony, SoBRO (South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation) opened the new Belmont Commons apartment building in the Bronx, with nine stories and 40 units.

The building is located conveniently a few blocks from Fordham Plaza and the Fordham Metro North Station.

The event was opened

by Donna Davis, Director of Community Development for SoBRO. She said that the site had been two vacant lots, but now families will live here, of which 15% are formerly homeless who will receive rent subsidies. The income of renters ranges up to $70,000 per year, which is 80% of the

median income for a family of four.

SoBRO President Phillip Morrow next spoke about leading SoBRO in such projects for the last 20 years. He said that the furniture store Raymore & Flanigan will help families in getting discount and free items of furniture for their new apartments. The cost of the building was $14.3 million, with financing by JP Morgan Chase Bank.

ronx Community College is the country’s only community college with a campus that includes a National Historic Landmark designated by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Here’s an opportunity to find out why.

Brooklyn Tech’s Commander of Submarine Group Nine

R

ear Admiral David Kriete, a native of Brooklyn, New York and a 1980 graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School is serving as Commander, Submarine Group Nine, at Bangor Submarine Base in Silverdale, Washington.

“I feel like there were some teachers from Brooklyn Tech and my earlier schools that were a big part of making me who I am today. There are many things that I do every day, both in my personal and professional life, which I can trace back to the incredible educators of my past.”

Kriete left for the Naval Academy three weeks after graduating from Brooklyn Tech. He graduated in 1984 with a degree in General Engineering.

Following his commissioning as an officer, he completed Naval Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida and Nuclear Prototype school in Ballston Spa, New York. He reported to his first submarine in 1986 where

he served as a division officer aboard the Sturgeon-class attack submarine USS Finback (SSN 670).

“I was attracted to what the Navy had to offer and found that it aligned with the values and priorities that I learned growing up, especially at Brooklyn Tech. Everything that the Navy does is important, but I thought that the submarine mission was what I could most easily see myself doing.”

Kriete has deployed 12 times throughout his career. Following his division officer tour aboard USS Finback, he served aboard three additional ships including the USS Flying Fish (SSN 670) where he served as the Engineer, Navigator and Weapons Officer; the USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) where he served as the executive officer; and the USS Rhode Island (SSBN 740) where he served as the commanding officer.

“My favorite thing in the Navy is all of the great people that I have worked with. Whenever I look back on my deployments and accomplishments, I think about all of the people that I did them with. The sense of commitment and professionalism that I have seen over three decades in the Navy is incredible.”

He assumed command of Submarine Group Nine (CSG-9) on July 11, 2014. His responsibilities include exercising administrative control authority and oversight for shipboard training, personnel, supply, and material readiness for assigned submarine commands and units in the Pacific Northwest.

The mission of the ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) force is strategic deterrence, which is the act of deterring a nuclear attack with a safe, secure, and effective nuclear deterrent force.

While Kriete is unable to return home as often as he would like because of operational commitments, he still has a strong connection with Brooklyn.

“There is a spirit about Brooklyn that I have not encoun-

tered anywhere else in the world.

It’s hard to put your finger on it, but when I go back I feel it, and I miss that about New York.”

BP ADAMS ANNOUNCES EXHIBIT COMMEMORATING 800TH ANNIVERSARY OF MAGNA CARTA AT BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL

rooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams announced that he will host an international traveling exhibit at Brooklyn Borough Hall commemorating the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, a charter issued by King John of England that established for the first time the principle that every person was subject to the law, which will be open to the public from Monday, September 21st to Sunday, September 27th.

The principles found in the document, such as due process of law, played a fundamental role in establishing the supremacy of

the law in constitutional, democratic societies, including concepts embraced by the Founding Fathers in the Bill of Rights. The exhibit, “Magna Carta: Enduring Legacy 1215-2015,” is presented by the American Bar Association (ABA) in partnership with the Library of Congress and its Law Library.

“I am proud to make Brooklyn Borough Hall, the People’s House, home to important cultural and historical experiences like the commemoration of Magna Carta,” said Borough President Adams.
