Shirley McKinney helps to make New York Parks experiences better for all

The sites that McKinney and her staff oversee are the African Burial Ground, Castle Clinton, Federal Hall, General Grant’s Tomb, Hamilton Grange, Saint Paul’s Church and Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace. All seven sites are either National Historic Sites or National Monuments.

Harlemites in particular should be familiar with Grant’s Tomb, the final resting place of President Ulysses

S. Grant and wife Julia Dent Grant, which is the largest mausoleum in North America and is home to legendary Harlem events such as Jazz Mobile and A Great Day in Harlem.

Another Harlem site under the supervision of McKinney is Hamilton Grange, which is the only known home owned by Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of Treasury of the United States of America. Here’s a fun fact! The house was moved recently to 141st between Convent and St. Nicholas from its previous

home on Convent Avenue between 141st and 142nd.

Not only are the sites managed

by McKinney popular to tourists and New Yorkers, but also for notables as well.

There is also quite a bit of Afrocentric programming at African Burial Ground, a Caribbean Day Festival and planting service

Residents of NYCHA’s Lexington Houses Receive Improvements from Council Member Kallos

C

ouncil Member Kallos, joined by NYCHA Procurement Assistant Wendy Kendall and the Lexington Houses Tenant Association President Christina Johnson, celebrated the installation of new stoves and fridges for NYCHA residents recently.

The new stoves and fridges were funded through Council Member Kallos’ Participatory Budgeting (PB) process. PB allows residents of Council District 5 to vote on how $1 million is spent in capital improvements

on the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island.

Out of approximately 550 people who voted in PB, 129 people voted for the improvements at Lexington Houses We are finally investing in NYCHA and the 858 people who call Lexington Houses home will receive new stoves to replace ones which are broken and outdated,” said Council Member Ben Kallos. “I am pleased to have used my office’s funds to work with the residents and tenant leaders of Lexington Houses to make this happen.

School Truancy Needs a Career and Technical Solution

sobering report released by the Children’s Law Center and D.C. Lawyers for Youth says District of Columbia high schools are struggling with a chronic truancy problem that at any given time involves more than half of their enrollment. The report is critical of anti-truancy measures that increase administrative and legal interventions without addressing the underlying cause.

Many factors contribute to poor school attendance, particularly for low-income and disadvantaged youth. The root cause is lack of engagement in learning that is relevant to everyday life, gives students a sense of accomplishment, and connects them to employment.

District of Columbia schools are not alone. Research shows more than 1 in 4 African American youth in the U.S., ages 16 to 24, have little or no connection to school and work experiences as they enter adulthood.

A decade ago, the nonprofit District of Columbia Students Construction Trades Foundation founded the Academy of Construction and Design at one of Washington, D.C.’s oldest public high schools. Our goal was to increase the skills and readiness of individuals seeking jobs in the region’s booming construction industry.

We met extensively with school, industry and community leaders to address diverse needs and concerns. After listening intently to a description of our proposed technical academy in an early meeting with the D.C. Board of Education, a student representative to the board remarked that more students would stay in school and avoid dropping out if they were able to participate in the hands-on math, carpentry, electrical, blueprint reading, and science courses we planned to offer.

Over the ensuing decade, outcomes for students in our career and technical education (CTE) classes would prove him right.

The Academy of Construction and Design has maintained a greater than 90 percent graduation rate. CTE pathways combine academic and technical studies to encourage students to stay in school and graduate with skills and credentials that open doors to employment, further education and viable careers.

Skilled trades CTE changes the way students see themselves and their future prospects. However, D.C. and other urban school districts continue to overlook or eliminate these programs entirely.

Anyone who dismisses the need for accredited instruction in carpentry, electrical and other building trades should remember that heavy snow, arctic temperatures and high winds shut down much of the country last winter causing broken pipes, collapsed roofs and downed power lines.

Odds are, if this happened to your home or business, you called a professional for help.

Without education and training, individuals with those essential skills and capabilities would be harder to find.

To begin to understand why skilled trades education has been pushed aside, we can look back to debates between the nineteenth-century leaders, W.E.B. Dubois and Booker T. Washington. Washington advocated training students in craft, industrial and farming skills, while Dubois focused on college-educated African Americans whom he called the “Talented Tenth.”

This planted the seed of thought that college education holds much more value and commands greater respect than vocational education. This misconception lingers today, even

as educators struggle to reduce truancy, improve student performance, and close the achievement gap for black and Latino students.

In Washington, the DC Students Construction Trades Foundation just opened its newly renovated and constructed training facility at IDEA Public Charter School, one of the city’s longest operating and top performing high schools. These classrooms and training labs are the new home of the Academy of Construction and Design during school hours and the DC Apprenticeship Academy, which offers evening classes for apprentice trainees employed by contractors in the District of Columbia.

Our science, technology, engineering, design arts and math partnership with IDEA is a replicable model for educating and employing the next generation of skilled trades professionals who will keep technology-smart homes and buildings from being cold, dark and flooded. Something to think about!

Home Buying In Harlem Be Prepared to Buy Now

The final point demonstrates how costly it is to purchase a home in Harlem. For low to moderate income buyers who want to remain in Harlem, you will need to develop an aggressive savings plan to successfully complete this process.

There are still some grant programs available to provide financial assistance, but you must meet all of the eligibility requirements. The strategy is to use all of the available programs to maximize your grant amount. Here are a few programs offering assistance: (1) the Home First Down Payment

Assistance program offered through New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

This program will give eligible buyers 6% of the purchase price up to $15,000.

(2) The First Home Club is another program that you can use to increase your savings.

This program will provide a $4 match for every dollar you save.

You can save a total of $1,850 and will receive a matching grant of $7,500 toward the purchase of your home. However, you must save for a minimum of 10 months and you must use one of the three participating lenders (HSBC, M & T, or Astoria) for your mortgage. You must also complete the purchase of your home within 24 months of start-

ing the account.

(3) The State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA) also offers 3% of the purchase price up to $15,000 in either a closing cost assistance loan (CCAL) or a down payment assistance loan (DPAL) to eligible buyers. Like the HPD grant, the purchased property must be your primary residence for a minimum of 10 years in order for the loan to be forgiven or you may have to repay a percentage of the loan.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month The number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has ballooned from 5.5 million in 1980 to currently 21.3 million cases in the United States, with about 1.7 new cases diagnosed each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently recommending that all overweight adults over age 40 have their blood sugar tested for diabetes, and those with high blood sugar be sent for intensive diet and exercise counseling, Mount Sinai experts are weighing in on all aspects of prevention, diagnosis, and management of the disease.

“In addition to providing intensive treatments and lifestyle counseling, we continue

n Thursday, November 5th, Harlem Business Alliance (HBA) hosted a successful keynote speaker and panel discussion for the event Black Business Matters: Achieving Economic Equality in Contracting in the Harlem Hospital Pavilion.

The purpose of the forum was to address the fact that Black-owned businesses in New York do not receive a fair share when it comes to contracting opportunities.

Even though the NYC Black population is 25%, last year Black-owned businesses received less than .03% of government contracts in NYC. The event began with a one-on-one discussion between keynote speaker R. Donahue Peebles (the nation’s largest African-American real estate developer/ Founder of Peebles Corporation) and moderator Adrianne C. Smith (HBA Board Member). Mr. Peebles shared how DC Mayor Marion Barry gave him his first real estate development opportunity which he was able to grow into a multimillion company. He stated that successfully executing public contracts leads to success in

Harlem father and math enthusiast, Junior Maynard, has been named Great School Volunteer of the Year

by NYC non-profit, Learning Leaders, for his exceptional work supporting the students, parents and teachers at PS 175 on West 134th Street.

The dedicated Mr. Maynard is in his fifth consecutive year of volunteering at PS 175. He works in the school all day, Monday through Friday, through Learning Leaders – the City’s preeminent non-profit dedicated to engaging families and communities to support public school student success. He was selected from more than 4,000 Learning Leaders volunteers across the five boroughs and was re-

Mr. Maynard is a highly valued member of the school community and uses his passion for math to tutor and inspire students, having been trained by the school’s profes-

sional math coach. He works one-on-one with third, fourth and fifth graders who struggle with the subject to help them keep up with their class. One of his talents is making the problems relatable and interesting for the students, and phrasing them in ways they will understand.

When one particular student assigned to the Learning Leader claimed not to like

math at all, Mr. Maynard asked him what he did enjoy, and learned that he loved basketball. The volunteer then converted the math problems into a basketball game, enabling the boy to understand the concepts and make better progress.

Mr. Maynard first became a Learning Leader when his son attended PS 175, having been approached by a Parent Teacher Association member and recognizing that his skills could fill a student need.

While his son started middle school this year, Mr. Maynard’s niece and Godson still attend the school, and he intends to continue to volunteer for the foreseeable future to make an impact on even more of the neighborhood’s kids.

Mr. Maynard also acts as a mentor to some of the students, offering attention and encouragement. He assists in the Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten classes, reading to the children and helping them improve their own reading skills, as well as providing general school support as needed.

Additionally, Mr. Maynard has helped PS 175’s parents to understand what is involved in the Common Core Learning Standards, attending official NYC Department of Education sessions to obtain information, and then sharing this with families at special workshops.

Each month, Learning Leaders selects several of its top volunteers, nominated by

Flu Season Health Strategies

The most important thing to do now to prepare for Flu season, which is around January and February, is to strengthen your immune system. I will come back to this in a moment; first I would like to address the effectiveness of flu shots.

A

h, life is funny.

Every once in a while it gives you a wake-up call, and when it does the alarm seems to go off even louder than usual.

Maybe it has happened to you lately or maybe it has been a while, but regardless; whenever it happens life manages to get your attention immediately. How do you react? There are, of course, many ways to respond.

Some of us ignore it and continue along our merry way. There are those of us who hear it

and pull the covers back over our head and sleep through it. Or maybe you’re the type to swat at it hoping to stop the ring. Could it be that you always decide instead to hit the snooze button?

How about those noble few who jump up immediately and rush to make changes? No matter where you fall in the mix, one thing is for sure . . . you have to make a decision to do one thing or another!

Now this is a bit abstract, so humor me . . .

Doing nothing requires the tenacity to ignore the call completely, because if you heard it once, surely you will be destined to hear it again. Making a deci-

sion to respond later means that you have but a short while before you hear it again. If you respond immediately, before thinking about what life is trying to tell you then you risk making a mistake.

The truth is that whatever you decide to do there is risk involved.

You have no way of knowing until you do something. Confusing huh? Based on your own perspective there are reasons to hesitate or not. So what to do?

We have a tendency to think that we have plenty of time to do what we want with our lives. As each day passes, there are things like work and family that

tend to consume all of our time and it’s easy to put things off. Tomorrow’s another day, right? Wrong. You never know what tomorrow will bring, but wouldn’t it be nice to “get a jump on” what you might want it to bring? I think that life’s wake-up calls are subliminal messages to encourage us to shake things up a bit. It is a signal to expand our possibilities in order to live a fuller life. There are obviously drawbacks and benefits to any response whether it is good, bad or indifferent; the choice is yours alone.

As tempting as it is to say that anyone has the right answer, you

hold the key to the adventure called life.

Only the possibilities are endless, a lifetime isn’t; why wait? Think about it. See you next week.

E

very day, you make countless little choices.

Get outta bed or go back to sleep? What’s for breakfast? Blue tie or black shirt?

Which project first, what’s for lunch, dinner, after dinner, what to watch, read, discuss?

All day long, you choose one thing over another; in fact, Michael Strahan says that “the average American will [make] thirty-five thousand decisions” before bedtime. In his book “Wake Up Happy” (with Veronica Chambers), he explains how one of them can be a life-changer.

If you’ve ever seen Michael Strahan on-screen, you know how easy he makes his job look.

He seems comfortable with stars and strangers alike, although he calls himself “a shy

guy.” He says he gets nervous, but he knows how to handle himself because that’s the way he was raised.

Because Strahan’s father was in the military, the family lived overseas when Strahan was still very young. “Mannheim, Germany,” he says, “was an awesome place to grow up” because of its small-town feel and because children were truly raised by a village of stay-at-home mothers. Strahan’s father was busy, but Strahan remembers the frequent one-on-one time he spent with his dad, and the advice that poured forth on those events.

“In a perfect world,” Strahan says, “I’d have ninety-two [motivational] rules to match my jersey number. But in real life, I’ve found that you need only

eighteen to get and stay motivated.”

Rule Number One, he says is to “Be open to everything around you.” What you need, and the help to get it, can “come from the most unexpected places…” Pay attention, don’t make assumptions, and never throw away a chance to see what comes.

Remember that the journey is joyful, too, so take pleasure in it. If you want something, let your determination power your actions and keep in mind that when you’ve given your all, there’s still more to give. Know when to bow out gracefully but don’t quit a tough road; instead, know when to “hit pause.” Take the word “if” from your vocabulary. Listen to music that motivates you. Remember that “bad

experiences… often teach you the most.” Keep your sense of humor. “Be excellent. “ So you’re in need of some motivation, but you don’t want something that sounds like a million bees in a hive. Instead, you’d like something fresh, and “Wake Up Happy” is what you want.

Readers who have come to love author Michael Strahan on the field or on TV will be glad to know that his writing is genuine: what you see on the small screen is what you get in this book. This personable style of motivation carries through Strahan’s life story, his careers, and his love life, which has been rocky and he’s forthcoming on it all. That no-holds-barred attitude in storytelling lends trustworthiness to the lessons.

This is one friendly book and it’s short enough to read twice.

You’ll probably want to do that anyhow because, when you need a book to boost your confidence, “Wake Up Happy” is a good choice.

52 CAN DO’S: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions for each week of the year

AN-DO Tip #2: Look at everyday activities as your fitness center Let’s face it, we’re all busy. Despite the temptation to throw hands up in the air and declare “I just don’t have time to exercise!” I’m here to remind you friends, YEP YOU DO! God has already gifted us with the creativity and resourcefulness we need to accomplish anything of our choosing; and that includes making the time to healthfully restore our bodies.

Here are three of my favorite “Can Do” fitness strategies that require very little time, effort and absolutely no expense.

Strategy 1 - Ain’t No

Mountain High Enough Climb stairs and walk the escalators instead of riding to your destination. Consider the 125th street train station in Harlem. If you are physically able, forget the elevator, take the stairs. You can exit the train or bus one stop before you’re scheduled and walk the rest of the way.

Plus, the fresh air and sunshine helps replenish vitamin D, one of the most important nutrients for the body.

If mobility is an issue for whatever reason, and you’re unable to walk far or climb stairs, the next tip is definitely for you.

Strategy 2: A leg above the rest - Leg extensions and

rotations Place both feet squarely on the floor, grip your hands firmly on the sides of your chair. Make sure your chair is strong and stable (no wheels!) Contract your core and keep your back as straight as possible.

Extend your right leg straight out in front of you so that your leg is in parallel position to the floor. Lift up as high as you can and bring back to parallel position for 8-12 reps. Repeat the same on the left leg. Alternate for 2 sets of 8-12 reps on each leg.

Extend your right leg forward, then flex leg and rotate as if peddling with one leg on a bicycle. Alternate right

and left legs for 2 sets of 8-12 reps.

Place feet squarely on the floor. Contract (pull in as you exhale) your abdominal muscles.

Simultaneously, squeeze your glutes (buttocks) together as tightly as you can and hold for 8 seconds. Repeat 8 times.

Approximate Exercise Time: 3-4 minutes.

Repeat A – C (2-3 sets per day).

In about three weeks, feel and see the results for yourself!

Strategy 3: “Michelle’s Arms”: This is an excerpt from an exercise step I developed and named after First Lady Michelle Obama’s

amazing arms featured in my book, Bed Aerobics Fitness Flow. This exercise tones the arms, upper back, and shoulders. Repeat each exercise for 15 reps. Best of all this is a great exercise to do while watching your favorite television show.

Stretch your arms out horizontally so that your palms face the floor. Maintain a slight bend to the elbow as you lift your arms up toward the ceiling and back down to parallel position; your arms should resemble a bird flapping its wings.

Starting from parallel arms, turn your hands so that your palms face the wall behind you. Now, pump your

arms up and down with your palms facing the wall behind you. This is the first set.

There is a 30-second rest in between each set). Approximate Exercise Time: three minutes. Repeat A and B for 4 sets of 15 reps.

Remember, that with a little creativity and resourcefulness, you’ll discover you have more time to get fit than you ever thought possible!

Susan Steinberg, Providence Rest administrator, said: “Being located on the water has always been a mixed blessing for us. Our residents enjoy spectacular views and experience

the peace and calm that sitting by the water’s edge can bring.

But during Hurricane Sandy, the storm surge and high tide took its toll on our 650-foot seawall.

When the New York State Legislature approved federal emergency funds allocated for Sandy relief, Senator Klein worked to ensure that Providence Rest received its piece of the pie. While our Seawall has been our great stone storm protector, Senator Klein has been our protector in the Senate, making sure that Providence Rest receives the funding and support we need to continue to care for the frail, compromised, and elderly members of our community.”

In 2013, Senator Klein secured nearly $3 million in FEMA funding for service or-

ganizations and cultural institutions in the 34th Senate District.

A total of $318,207 was allocated to Providence Rest for the repair and reconstruction of its seawall.

Providence Rest later applied for a federal block grant in the amount of $1.5 million to supplement funding secured by Senator Klein and completely replace their weather-beaten seawall. In February 2015, Providence Rest began construction on the project. Work was completed this month, and today, Providence Rest is home to a sturdy new seawall to protect it from extreme weather and future storms.

n Thursday, November 5th, Harlem Business Alliance (HBA) hosted a successful keynote speaker and panel discussion for the event Black Business Matters: Achieving Economic Equality in Contracting in the Harlem Hospital Pavilion.

The purpose of the forum was to address the fact that Black-owned businesses in New York do not receive a fair share when it comes to contracting opportunities.

Even though the NYC Black population is 25%, last year Black-owned businesses received less than .03% of government contracts in NYC. The event began with a one-on-one discussion between keynote speaker R. Donahue Peebles (the nation’s largest African-American real estate developer/ Founder of Peebles Corporation) and moderator Adrianne C. Smith (HBA Board Member). Mr. Peebles shared how DC Mayor Marion Barry gave him his first real estate development opportunity which he was able to grow into a multimillion company. He stated that successfully executing public contracts leads to success in

“Public-private partnerships like these help us revitalize science and sustainability programming in New York City public schools,” said Sidsel Robards, director of development and events for New York Sun Works. “We are honored to be working with Brooklyn Borough Hall on this mission.”

“Chair Julie Dent and I were ecstatic to learn of the FY16 capital budget allocation that Borough President Adams allocated to four schools in Community District 4,” said Nadine Whitted, district manager of Community Board 4.

“Through this generous allocation, our youngsters will have an opportunity to learn first-hand about greenhouse technology and other science concepts that

Cunningham Heights Tenants Organize To Improve Apartment Conditions

n Tuesday, October 20th, 2015, members of the Cunningham Heights Tenants Association submitted a litany of complaints to the Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR), detailing fourteen qualms staked against their landlord, ChWen Management, based in Garden City. Among their many issues were protections against tenant harassment, recourse for rodent and rat infestation, reinstated use of storage and garage facilities and oversight of mental health service providers renting apartments to clients.

Heights Apartments, a housing complex squared neatly between Francis Lewis Boulevard, Hillside Avenue and the Grand Central Parkway is a rent-stabilized development comprised of 44 three-story buildings with about 1,050 units. Rent stabilized tenants are protected from sharp increases in rent and have the right to renew their leases for one- or two-year periods. Rent increases are set by the New York City Rent Guidelines Board.

Their claims were submitted with the help of State Senator Leroy Comrie (D-St. Albans), who has been working

closely with the Tenants Association to ensure speedy, responsive remediation since earlier this year. Chronic problems have peppered tenants’ experiences at Cunningham Heights: they lack access to service rooms, parking spaces and laundry facilities; they trip over broken and uneven steps; they are overcharged for apartment repairs and given little to no notice of heat or hot water shut-offs. Despite paying for management services as a part of their rent, they receive little to no response to tenant complaints. Requests for handicap ramps and struc-

tures are not addressed, despite federal regulation dictating compliance.

Tenants are sometimes not given the choice to renew their leases for two-year periods as mandated by City code.

In past years, tenants speaking out against management’s behavior have been targeted in retaliation, having access to their garages and storage units taken away. Some long-term residents have even been threatened with eviction following a single late rental payment, despite years of timely compensation and good behavior – actions taken by the

landlord that constitutes harassment, as defined by NYC’s Agency for Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

Senator Comrie, seeing the need for intervention, asked representatives from DHCR and the Mayor’s Office to attend the Cunningham Heights Tenants Association’s October 19th meeting. At the meeting, residents told stories of mistreatment that ranged from neglect to outright harassment.

Senator Comrie was eager to unite residents and move forward with submitting complaints to DHCR: “By putting our cards on the

table and refusing to remain silent, we will hold bad actors accountable for their behavior and ensure this community is protected. The residents of Cunningham Heights will have their day in court.”

Upon receiving tenants’ complaints, DHCR will issue a docket number to the landlord and tenant representatives. The agency will receive testimony from both sides of the case, and will eventually reach a determination.

DHCR represenatative Jean Ceus estimated that the minimum amount of time the case would take to deliberate would be six months.
