GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE This past Sunday the Harlem Miles of the NY Marathon was an exciting route for the runners and all those who came out to cheer them on. Some of the participants were in wheel chairs, some ran barefoot and others had colorful outfits. We recognized a couple of Harlemites including Senator Bill Perkins and photographer Regina Fleming. It was indeed a few inspirational hours as the community came out in numbers to enjoy the music along the route, as well as cheer the runners on. (see page 12)..

ational parks have a lot to offer kids of all ages: fitness, recreation, history, natural wonders---in other words, fun. The “Every Kid in a Park” event offers activities with a taste of all that national parks have to offer: stations with physical outdoor activities, walkthroughs of the home

of founding father and Harlem resident Alexander Hamilton, and tips on how to camp out (yes, you can go camping with the NPS in New York City).

A DJ will keep things fun and lively. As First Lady Michelle Obama says, “Let’s move!”

Infrastructure Engineering Opens New York office in Harlem

I

nfrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) officially opened its New York office in Harlem at 233 West 135th Street. IEI is one of the largest African American owned engineering firms based in Chicago, IL the firm also has offices in Indianapolis, IN; Omaha, NE; Peoria and Springfield, IL. Michael Sutton President of IEI who acquired the firm in 1997, stated that “Opening an office in New York aligns with the firm’s strategic growth plan and that the robust market in New York is ideal for IEI’s expanding professional and technical service capability and capacity which will allow us to better serve our clients” IEI specializes in highway/ roadway, mass transit/railways, site development, airports, harbor, and water management.

ast month, I announced that starting next school year, all New York City high schools will offer the SAT exam free to 11th-graders.

Students will take the SAT during the school day in the spring.

As the daughter of immigrants and the first person in my family to go to college, I know how difficult the college process – including taking the SAT exam – can be. But I also know that whether our young people go to college shouldn’t be decided by what neighborhood they live in or what country they or their parents come from.

That’s why Mayor de Blasio and I are committed to “College Access for All” – improving the college process for all students and families and putting more students on the path to college. Starting next year, the new “SAT School Day” is part of our commitment, and it is going to make a real difference for students and families.

At a Manhattan high school I visited this week, I spoke to 12th-graders about their experience with the SAT. Isabella was nervous for her SAT exam because she had to travel to an unfamiliar school. Her classmates Sam and Samantha were as worried about paying for the SAT as the actual material on the test. Even students who qualified to take the test for free had to spend time tracking down a fee waiver instead of studying.

While Isabella, Sam, and Samantha all ended up taking the SAT, many students like them across New York City did not. As we remove the barriers around the SAT, we’ll see more of our talented students taking the exam, as well as students like Isabella, Sam and Samantha more relaxed and better prepared to succeed on their exams.

By moving the SAT to the regular school day starting next year, we’re also highlighting the importance of college planning and college exams for all students

and families. That’s a large part of what SAT School Day and College Access for All are about – reminding all our students that they can pursue college and giving them and their families the support they need to do that.

Our schools will continue to share information about SAT School Day and College Access for All as we move forward, and I am excited to work with parents as partners as we make these initiatives a reality.

an anyone afford to buy a home in Harlem? A better question to ask might be; are Harlem residents being priced out of their community? The problem has become alarming because there is nowhere in Harlem that is affordable. What are first time home buyers to do?

Where can they go to purchase homes for their families? Apparently the escalating home values and the limited amount of money a lender is now willing to finance to a first time buyer is doing just that.

Home values in today’s market are dictating that low to moderate income buyers cannot afford to purchase a home in Harlem. As a prospective first time buyer you can only

expect this situation to get worse before it gets any better.

For this very reason, many first time home buyers are now looking into low income areas like Jersey City and Newark.

Prices are still somewhat reasonable in these communities.

However, the additional time spent in commuting back and forth to the city might become a problem if there are young children in your family.

Another possible option to consider is Staten Island.

There are many affordable homes that are reasonably priced in this borough. One positive factor also is you will still be residing in New York City. Therefore, you could still use the HPD grant if you meet the other eligibility re-

quirements. Either way, do your research to determine if relocating to any one of these communities will fit your budget, lifestyle and provide you with a level of comfort.

Buying a home is a big decision and you do not want to rush into it. But I would not wait too long before exploring any of these options. Just like Harlem in a few years these home will increase in value and you will find yourself priced out of the home buying market again.

he New York City Marathon took place on Sunday, November 1, 2015, in all five boroughs of the Big Apple, and while you would get many different opinions from runners on which part of the 26.2 mile course is the most difficult, you would get one consensus answer on which part was the most energetic: Harlem.

Harlem Community News, Inc, the publisher of this newspaper, in association with Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, New York Road Runners, and (HMF) promoted “Harlem Miles”, a weekend’s worth of activities that culminated with five stages featuring different themes, performers and DJs on the race route.

The first stage, on 135th and Fifth Avenue, featured gospel and spiritual performances. Other stages were on 110th and Fifth Avenue, featuring jazz, 117th and Fifth Avenue, featuring Latin and Caribbean, and the main stage at Marcus Garvey Park, featuring “The Sounds of Harlem.” But the most energetic stage was the R&B and Hip-Hop stage on 125th and Fifth Avenue.

With featured performers and DJ Mitch from WBLS playing music, the crowd cheered on runners, and many

of the runners acknowledged the music with fist pumps, waves, with even a few stopping to dance a few steps, or more, before continuing on their 26.2 mile journey. It was truly inspiring and exciting,

and I’m certain it was the most exciting miles of the marathon!

Senator Bill Perkins, who is running for Congress and ran in the marathon, echoed those sentiments. “In this great New York City event, what really

makes it special is the energy, enthusiasm and support I received from the people in Harlem, East Harlem and the Bronx. When the race was getting tough, it was the people here who picked me up.”

reathingdo means the way of breathing, or the way to breathe correctly (see Breathingdo Part I at www.theartofwarogers. info). If your chest moves when taking a deep breath you are breathing incorrectly; a bad habit developed over time due to social programing. Incorrect breathing is a major factor in most illnesses. Stress is the cause of most illnesses and incorrect breathing is the fuel that feeds stress. Correct breathing or Breathingdo can reduce stress by bringing balance to the

Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) The ANS operates through two divisions, the sympathetic (fear, excitement, and worry) and the parasympathetic (relaxation, not frightened).

When our thoughts communicate fear, the ANS sends chemical stimulants to every organ in our body making it ready to run or fight.

The heart rate is increased, more blood and oxygen is sent to the brain and our sense organs. Stored sugars for energy are released by the liver. Our veins and arteries constrict, which creates a rise in blood pressure. Our skeletal

muscles constrict and our breath becomes shallow and fast.

The scientific term for the combat mode produced by the ANS when we are frightened is called “fight or flight”.

The parasympathetic side of the ANS will produce depressant body chemicals to reduce tension when the thought of fear is over. When we become extremely excited we usually then become severely depressed after this chronic imbalance in the ANS is what we call “stress” When we worry and become fearful of the unknown we become stressed, the ANS has

no idea that many of our fears are illusory. All too often our body is in the “fight or flight” mode for long periods of time for no real reason; a foundation for many illnesses.

Abdominal breathing is a natural way to balance the ANS it is how we learned to breathe while in our womb during the early stages of our development; which is why abdominal breathing is also known as baby breathing.

If you purchase something, check the store’s return policy, because you may need to follow the guideline above.

Before you even

consider shopping, remember that you probably have more than you need, and perhaps by using a little creativity and accessories you can work magic with what you already own.

Remember, the clothes that you wear (or don’t), can’t collect interest nor increase in value (okay, unless we’re talking Chanel originals-and I mean sewn by Coco herself).

Money is a powerful tool. Use it wisely to empower yourself. Used unwisely, the debt you incur will enslave you.

Face it, you can shop until you drop but buying something

new won’t necessarily help you look or feel better-that comes from the inside. If you have money to spend and you sincerely want to shop for something or if you saved up to shop that’s one thing; but shopping for the sake of shopping can become a problem.

There is plenty of time this year to invest the money you’ll save in something that will result in rewarding you with a spiritual, emotional or financial return. Before you shop, stop and think about it.

our family is filled with people to whom you look up.

There’s Grandpa, who served in the war. Grandma, who raised many children with little money.

Your uncle, another veteran overseas; and both your parents, who keep you fed and safe. You look up to all of them but imagine how high you’d have to look if they were on horseback, and then read “Buffalo Soldiers: Heroes of the American West” by Brynn Baker.

At the beginning of the Civil War, many freedmen and recent-runaway slaves tried to enlist in the Army to fight for the North. There were laws against that kind of thing then, but after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, the Union Army was open to former slaves, who fought in segregated units.

Says Baker, “By the time the war ended in 1865, about 186,000 black soldiers had joined the Union army.” Twenty-five of them were awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery in battle and so, seeing that African Americans made fine soldiers, Congress “reorganized the army” to create six “all-black regiments” (later reduced to four) and sent them to patrol the Western territories on foot or by horse. They were called Buffalo Soldiers, although nobody knows exactly why.

Segregation was still the law of the land then, but being a Buffalo Soldier was a way to make a living while also gaining “the respect of white men.” Riding on horseback, the Buffalo Soldiers kept the peace in a lawless Western frontier. Relations between settlers and Native Ameri-

cans were shaky, and the Soldiers helped eliminate disputes. They were assigned to fix forts, help local sheriffs uphold the law, and guard mail carriers. While doing their jobs, they mapped the new territories and took note of the wildlife they often encountered.

There was adventure, but the job was “challenging,” too: housing was usually poor, food was sometimes lacking, while battle and disease also took its toll.

Buffalo Soldiers often worked with second-rate equipment and broken-down horses. Still, they “took their jobs seriously and served with honor” and eight states can thank their existence, in part, to “the Buffalo Soldiers’ service to their country.”

Dates and names. Does your child think that history consists just of those two sometimes-bor-

ing things? Show him or her that there are lively stories behind those names and dates by giving him “Buffalo Soldiers.”

With plenty of pictures and sidebars, author Brynn Baker puts history into perspective by explaining, in child-friendly terms, how black men (and at least one woman!) helped settle the West at a time when African Americans sometimes struggled for the chance to own property themselves. Baker furthermore shows how Native American history is intertwined with that of the Soldiers, and it’s told in an engaging, almost story-like way that I think kids will enjoy.

For 9-to-12-year-olds, this is a great introduction to a sometimes-overlooked facet of history and it might spur them to delve even further into the topic. History-minded children, especially, may want to read “Buffalo Sol-

diers” for pleasure, too, so go ahead – look it up.

Diabetes Can Knock You Off Your Feet

iabetes.

Everyone knows someone who is diabetic or pre-diabetic; hopefully, those folks see their doctors regularly and have adjusted their lifestyles accordingly. Thirteen

percent of residents of East Harlem and 12 percent of residents of Central Harlem have diabetes, compared to the Manhattan average of seven percent. And among New York City residents with diabetes, more than one-third have not gotten an eye or foot exam in the past year (2005).

This last statistic is especially troubling. Although diabetes affects one’s total well-being, one of the more serious aspects of the disease is the threat it poses to the

foot. Why? Nerve damage (neuropathy), common in diabetes, causes decreased sensation, or total lack of feeling, in the lower leg and in the foot. A diabetic might not be aware of a pebble in a shoe, something sharp on the floor, or anything else that might scratch or cut the skin on the foot. That can open it to infection, which can have dire consequences, including amputation.

In addition to neuropathy, there are two additional foot and

lower extremity problems that are complications of diabetes: poor circulation (aka peripheral vascular disease), and foot ulcers and infection.

Diabetics’ poor circulation leads to the possibility of infections and complications, while foot ulcers (open sores on the foot) are subject to infection (gangrene) that may result in surgery, with amputation of the diseased portion.

Some tips for care of the diabetic foot include avoiding walking bare-

foot, extremes of temperature, including heat from heating pads, hot foot soaks or hot water bottles, or cold, which could lead to frostbite; inspecting feet and shoes daily; going to a podiatrist for treatment of corns and calluses and other foot problems; and drying feet thoroughly and using a moisturizing cream daily.

How I made my pain, my progress – and the power of sweet beet greens

were beautiful bright leafy greens poking out of the bag from the beets I just brought from the market. I must have

confused them with the kale bag thinking I’d picked them both up.

I cut off the green and red leaves from my beets, washed and cut them into small strips, then sautéed them with red onion, fresh garlic, red pepper flakes, a small cap full of apple cider vinegar, dash of salt and a touch raw organic honey to taste -- basically preparing them as I would have the kale. Hands down the best greens I’ve probably eaten all year.

They were absolutely so delicious I forgot all about the kale. Plus, the greens of the beets are the most nutrient dense and full of iron –al-

After all, didn’t our African ancestors given leftovers from the plantation (turnip, collard, kale greens, ham hocks etc.) have to make something great from all that they had to provide for their families? BOROUGH PRESIDENT DIAZ KICKS OFF 5th ANNUAL ‘SAVOR THE BRONX’ RESTAURANT WEEK

ronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. officially kicked off the 5th Annual “Savor the Bronx” Restaurant Week today at Patricia’s Restaurant on Morris Park Avenue.

“Savor the Bronx” Restaurant Week, produced by the Bronx Tourism Council and co-hosted by the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC), showcases the borough’s best eateries by offering special values and discounts.

“I want to invite everyone to come and experience some of the many great flavors we have here in The Bronx,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “Our

borough has an amazing food culture, and ‘Savor the Bronx’ is a great way to explore our epicurean delights while taking advantage this 12-day promotional event and try something new. I invite foodies from not only The Bronx, but all over the region, to take advantage of this wonderful event and sample the many flavors my borough has to offer.”

“Restaurants play a big role in attracting tourism. That we have so many of our fine dining institutions participating in this year’s Savor The Bronx Restaurant Week is a testimony to how The Bronx has become a destination for visitors from all over the world,” said

This 12-day event, which runs from November 2nd to November 13th, is the perfect opportunity to explore your taste buds at a various restaurants around the Bronx. From Italian cuisine in Little Italy to seafood on City Island, from sushi in Mott Haven to burgers in Kingsbridge and everywhere in between, “Savor the Bronx” offers everyone a chance to enjoy the diverse flavors our borough has to offer.

ast Month, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams unveiled over $5 million in capital funding from his Fiscal Year 2016 budget that he is investing in advancing economic development across Brooklyn, including initiatives to further job creation and workforce training.

He made the announcement at Sahadi’s, a multi-generationally owned Middle Eastern grocery store in Brooklyn Heights on Atlantic Avenue, which will benefit from a $35,000 allocation for new wayfinding signs to promote small business tourism between Brooklyn Bridge Park and Barclays Center.

NYC & Company & Brooklyn-Made Awards Headline Brooklyn Chamber’s Annual Meeting

n October 28th, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce hosted its Annual Membership Meeting and Trade Show, featuring NYC & Company President and CEO Fred Dixon as keynote speaker.

The event was held at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island.

“Our partnership with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce strengthens our global promotion of New York City as the world’s most exciting destination,” said Fred Dixon, President and CEO of NYC & Company. “Visitors want to experience the ‘authentic’ New York City, and that growing interest in borough neighborhoods and culture means the opportunity for visitor exploration and spending throughout Brooklyn is greater than ever.”

The event -- which saw over 500 attendees -- also featured a presentation of the Brooklyn Chamber’s top 10 accomplishments of the year, including the first-ever Brooklyn Night in Washington, D.C., the CHEERS NY craft beverage festival and innovative partnerships with both Google and Airbnb.

The Brooklyn Chamber’s leading achievement was the creation of its Economic Assessment -- a snapshot of the borough’s economy that provides insightful details on the real estate market, job growth, population, and flourishing and threatened industries, among other topics.

“Brooklyn is always one step ahead, and I’m proud that the Chamber continues to find inno-

vative ways to keep up with this incredible borough,” said Brooklyn Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “We certainly made quite an impact in 2015, whether it was through fantastic events like CHEERS NY, BKLYN DESIGNS or Brooklyn Night, incredible partnerships with Airbnb and Google, or the release of our Brooklyn Economic Report. I think it’s pretty clear, we’re not your grandparent’s Chamber.”

n October 28th in Astoria, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz installed the fiscal year 2015-2016 Queens Council on the Arts Board of Trustees and its new Junior Board of Trustees, now in its second year.

Hosted at QCA’s headquarters in Astoria, Borough President Katz spoke at length on QCA’s programs, the important role of Queens art and culture as major economic engines, and her longstanding support of the organization’s work. Her father, David, was a well-known conductor who founded the Queens Symphony Orchestra in 1953, and her mother,
