he Harlem Tourism Board (HTB) held its “New Residents Reception” on November 11th sponsored by Raymour & Flanigan. The reception was held at the Raymour & Flanigan store located on 125th and Lexington Ave. The host graciously provided wine, snacks and a dj for the event.

Racism on Campus is Nothing New. But New Student Movement Is.

s a first-year student at Brown University, twenty-five years ago, I was detained by campus security for trespassing. In my own dorm. In sock feet.

You see, I’d left my room to go to the bathroom and didn’t bring my college ID along. I guess I should have known better. As a black student it was always an unstated expectation that I justify my presence on campus.

Black students were a small minority on campus and we were often seen as interlopers, even after admission.

I was reminded of this incident during the past weeks as protests escalated at the University of Missouri (Mizzou) over a string of

racist incidents there, culminating in the ouster of the state university System President Tim Wolfe. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and using a wide range of tried-andtrue and cutting edge tactics, Mizzou students won one of their main demands, something many observers had said was impossible.

This example of the power of protest was met with rightwing media ridicule, attack by the Missouri Lt. Governor and even death threats against students. Just a day after the jubilation at the resignation of Wolfe, fear of violence turned the campus into a ghost town.

Many white students, professors, community supporters and even the head of the country’s trade union movement all came out in support of the students. The hashtag #BlackOnCampus began documenting student experiences with racism around the country.

Missouri students were not alone. Students at Yale University were in motion as well in response to a racist incident on campus and reports of a “white girls only” fraternity party.

More joined the fight on Nov. 12, when the already planned Million Student March - demanding the elimination of all student debt (which has reached $1.2 trillion nationally), free college education for all, and $15 minimum wage for campus workers - stood in solidarity with besieged Mizzou students.

Racism on campuses both private and public is nothing new. Neither is student protest around the issues affecting their lives.

What is new is the national scope of the protest and the breadth of the support. Some 115 campuses took part in the protests.

More than 1,000 students gathered at the University of California at Berkeley. It’s the kind of student action not seen in a generation.

Ultimately the protests at Mizzou and elsewhere are not so much about this administrator or that, as they are about demanding that institutions of higher learning create a space for students of color.

It’s the same issue we were struggling with years ago.

When I was detained as a student it was not an isolated

incident. Police harassment of black students in particular was commonplace.

There were also acts of bigotry against students of color by a few white students, reminders that to some we were unwelcome.

So it was no accident then that graduation rates for black students lagged behind those of our peers. So we organized meetings, issued demands, and protested to make a change, just like students today. Unfortunately little has changed. Black enrollment and graduation rates at Mizzou and colleges around the country are disproportionately low.

Some commentators seem to think these students are protesting because they are young and naive or involved in an intellectual exercise.

But students today - as always - are largely motivated to action by the pressing issues impacting their lives and educations. They are fighting to learn and survive. It’s not academic.

Here are two programs that can assist you reach your goal.

Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement, Inc. (HCCI) in partnership with the Mission Asset Fund (MAF) has started an ambitious financial initiative called the ‘Lending Circle.’ The Lending Circle provides its members with a “zero interest� loan. The principle of the program works similar to the ‘susu’ savings program. Each month, all members will have an

agreed upon amount automatically deducted from their checking accounts. One member will receive a lumps sum payment.

When each member has received a monthly lump sum payment the lending circle is completed.

Your participation in the program is reported to the credit bureaus as an installment loan. So the program will help you save money and improve your credit score. The time period for each Lending Circle is between 6-12 months. The savings amounts can range from $50-$200 per month. For more information see Mission Asset Fund.org.

Another program that can assist you is called the First Home Club. This program will give you $4 for every $1 you save. You can save a maximum

total of $1,875 and the program will match it with $7,500. You must save for a minimum of 10 months and you must use that participating lender for your mortgage. These are both excellent programs designed to assist low to moderate income families achieve homeownership.

Remember, set a realistic goal to save a specific amount of money each month. Make this goal a habit. Push yourself to save more. I know this is difficult when you are barely meeting your current monthly living expenses, but if you remain focused, you can do it.

Upstate Students Tour East Harlem

ore than 75 students from the Calkins Road Middle School in Rochester, NY, came to East Harlem and the Bronx November 7, 2015, to learn about and experience New York City’s Latin community roots.

The students arrived by bus to visit El Museo del Barrio and the Hispanic Society, took a guided tour by street art and landmarks in East Harlem, and attended performances at the Bronx Library Center. The tour and performances were arranged by Community Works NYC, whose board member, Kathy Benson, led the walking tours.

At the Bronx Library Center, storyteller and poet Bobby Gonzalez, a Bronx native who draws on Native American and Latino roots for his work, and Los Pleneros de la 21, the group celebrating Puerto Rican art and culture, provided memorable performances. Los Pleneros

de la 21, founded by Juan Gutierrez, is dedicated to fostering awareness and understanding of the richness and vitality of Puerto Rican music and culture, and has won particular note for performing traditional bomba and plena to get young audiences up and dancing.

The program will be repeated in April with another group of young people from upstate New York.

Community Works is a nonprofit group, now in its 26th year that works to bridge neighborhood differences through arts in education. Barbara Horow-

itz, founder and president of Community Works, said “This is exactly the kind of program that introduces students to arts and culture that may be new, but inviting.”

Community Works grew from a program starting in one classroom in 1990 to one that attracts 100,000 a

year across all the boroughs with exhibitions, teacher programs, performances and workshops.

College Holds Month-Long Activities Supporting American Pharmacists Month and Flu Awareness Month

ouro College of Pharmacy students recently participated in the school’s third annual “Operation Immunization,” a public health initiative organized by the approximately 70-member student chapter of the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP).

Operating out of the Gaylord White Senior Center on E. 104th Street in East Harlem, the 10 TCOP student volunteers screened the seniors about their health histories and assessed their current health to make sure there were no issues impairing their ability to receive live flu or other vaccines important to the elderly.

“Operation Immunization” was one of four activities host-

ed by the College in support of American Pharmacists Month and Flu Awareness Month. Other events included a flu clinic for the TCOP community; the screening of a documentary on the Spanish Flu Pandemic in the United States in 1918; and a guest lecture from flu vaccine developer, Dr. Doris Bucher of New York Medical

College, an affiliate of the Touro College and University System.

Interim Dean Dr. Zvi Loewy said the students, who receive the highest level of training in all aspects of pharmacy including therapeutics, diagnostics and preventative medicine, have historically taken an active role in immunization programs in keeping with the

College’s mission.

“We are very committed to contributing our expertise in preventative medicine within the Harlem community and are proud of the contributions our students make to this significant public health initiative.”

Because student pharmacists are not permitted to administer shots until after they graduate, the vaccines were injected by a licensed pharmacist from Rite Aid while the students observed the procedures. Fifteen vaccinations were administered, including vaccines for pneumococcus.

“The students organized the event from beginning to end and secured the participation of Rite Aid as a community partner,” explained Dr. Dipan Ray, director of

Event organizer Christine Nguyen, a third-year student and president of the APhA-ASP chapter at TCOP, said she and her fellow students learned a great deal about patient interaction, meeting the needs of seniors and community service.

“It’s vitality important for seniors to receive vaccinations because adults over 65 years of age are more susceptible to the flu and also prone to other preventable diseases as well,” Ms. Nguyen said. “As student pharmacists, it was our goal to administer as many immunizations as possible in order to do our part in protecting our senior population.”

The Water Books

ater has always been an important symbol of Taoism. The legendary Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu wrote in the “Tao Te Ching” (a book considered the foundation of Taoism) that “nothing under heaven is more yielding, but when it attacks the hardest substance cannot prevail”.

Over 70 percent of the earth is covered with water, and 70 percent of an infant’s body consists of water.

Masaru Emoto has conducted years of research focused on how water responds to music, words, and thought. Emoto’s research

also gives examples of how humans can interface with water from a spiritual plane.

With the use of high-speed photography of magnified water crystals, Emoto’s research (www.masaru-emoto.net) shows how water crystals can change based on positive or negative influences.

I became aware of Mr. Emoto’s research when it was featured in the popular new age movie “What the Bleep Do We Know?” In the film Mr. Emoto’s water experiments show how words such as “I love you” can create beautiful star snowflake-like crystals in crystallized water and how negative words like “I hate you” create odd, unappeal-

ing crystal images in crystallized water.

In his many books on water, Emoto shows pictures of how music and even thought can change how crystallized water drops appear. Two of my favorite are “Love Thyself: The Message from Water” and The Hidden Message in Water”. If you consider how music, thought, and words can affect crystallized drops of water, imagine what they can do to the water in the human body.

We understand the health-related relationship between health and the body’s need for water. Mr. Emoto’s research provides evidence that water can also be viewed in other ways

e always speak about herbs and imbalances in our systems that manifest as disease. We’ve discussed how to identify imbalances in our organs, as well as a variety of herbal therapies: from herbal teas/capsules to hot herbal compresses and herbal foot baths. Today we will talk about a greater vehicle for personal health empowerment.

by changing the foods you choose to eat. One of the major problems in this culture is our foods, beverages and lifestyles are too acidic. Our bodies were created with a mechanism to control this acid/alkaline balance, but our mis-use of “free will” has totally annihilated that power by our ill choices in foods, strained lifestyles and emotional imbalances

‘Tis the Season!

t ‘tis the season to be . . . generous. We are off to the start of the holiday season. I love this time of the year.

Memories of past holidays with family and friends flood my mind.

There are visions of huge festive meals and gifts piled high underneath the Christmas tree, the giggles of delight and squeals of discovery . . . . and a warm and cozy home with loving parents. Then there are the daily images on the

news, of men, women and children standing in long lines waiting for a holiday meal or bags of food. All very disconcerting when commercials aired throughout television programs are urging us to buy, buy, buy!

Economic indicators will probably be released to let us know that if we don’t spend money this holiday season, that the economy might suffer.

Tell that to those without jobs or those who lost their homes and are on the street. My goodness, they would have you think that you and you alone will rescue the economy if you spend your hard-earned money during these few weeks of madness! Oh, if only

the good tidings would last year-round!

What seems to be true though is that the holidays always seem to bring out the generosity of the human spirit. Organizations host holiday dinners for those less fortunate, gifts are collected for the children of the less fortunate and for a few short weeks life gets a little better for them.

What about the rest of the year? Their needs are still the same. They still sleep in homeless shelters, under bridges, in cars and go without food and other life necessities; needless to say, money is scarce. They won’t shop until they drop! Living from day-to-day takes up most of their time.

So, while you are enjoying your holidays, remember that life doesn’t really change much for people who struggle everyday just to survive.

Be thankful that you enjoy life’s basics. Be thankful for your health.

If you can find it in your heart to remember the less fortunate during the holiday season; then you can surely find it in your heart to remember them the rest of the year. Be as generous as you can every season because poverty never takes a holiday. Think about it. See you next week.

Y

ou woke up this morning with a craving.

So is breakfast time too early to think about dinner? Is it bad to want to sneak home for lunch, just to make your favorite comfort food? No, because nothing else tastes good when you’re hankering for something specific.

Your stomach won’t give up until you’ve satisfied that craving, so you might as well give in a little and read “The Jemima Code” by Toni Tipton-Martin.

Though her upbringing in California was sprinkled with foods reminiscent of her family’s origins in the South, Toni Tipton-Martin says that “precious few” of her favorite foods “qualified as southern.”

That made her, she says, “a casualty of the Jemima code,” which she de-

fines as something that classifies the “character and life’s work of our nation’s black cooks as insignificant.”

She set out to change that.

In many libraries, cookbooks

by African American authors are lacking. “Even,” says Tipton-Martin, “the southern cookbooks were silent on the subject” so she began to specifically collect cookbooks written by black authors, containing the knowledge and recipes of black cooks. As her collection grew, so did her understanding and she began seeing how “cooking changed, and cooks changed with it.”

From an obscure 1827 cookbook - the first one published by an African American author (and a man!)

- Tipton-Martin realized that many black cooks “existed in the culi-

nary shadows as far as cookbook writers were concerned.” Much of their work was probably credited to white owners or employers.

Technological advances in the early twentieth century altered how meals were made; science entered the picture, too, as did household worker’s unions – the latter, to the frustration of white employers, which is something African American cookbooks quietly reflected.

By mid-century, the early Civil Rights Movement could be spotted in black cookbooks of the day. Soul Food enjoyed new appreciation in the 1960s from hippies, flower children, “feisty black cooks,” and people of all races.

By the 1980s, African American cookbooks were penned by football stars, gardeners, and experts

alike. Says Tipton-Martin, “it was the cooks’ time to shine” although, even in today’s kitchen, “the times are not yet post-racial.”

There are, as I see it, three main reasons why you’d want “The Jemima Code” on your kitchen bookshelf.

First, author Toni Tipton-Martin’s history is a surprising one.

Reading her discoveries of cookbook subtleties and social mores alongside recipes through the years feels like opening a multi-layered gift, and her evolution of the Mammy figure is also fascinating. And those recipes she found? Though there aren’t a lot of them here, the ones that peek out through the pages are classic and easy to follow.

And finally, there’s a treasure-trove of pictures inside, of cooks at work and of the cookbook

covers themselves, making this large-sized book one that readers will want to carry with them from kitchen to living room, countertop to easy chair. You’ll scarcely know what to look at first, or what to cook next, making “The Jemima Code” a book you will crave.

CAN-DO Tip #3: Eat Fat to be Fit It appears as a nation we’ve been bamboozled into thinking that fat is the major culprit of obesity, heart disease and even diabetes. But according to numerous studies and biochemical logic, it’s clearly a myth.

In fact, fat is a hero nutrient because it serves so many vital functions in the body, plus it tastes great. Here are some fast fat facts.

WHY FATS ROCK! Fact: Healthy Fat is the building block of cells and

hormones, improves thyroid function and is critical for healthy brain function (did you know the brain is 60% fat?)

Fact: Healthy Fat helps absorb much needed fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, K, and repairs arterial blood vessels damaged by chronic insulin spikes due to sugar and refined starch intake.

Fact: Healthy Fat supplies energy to the body after glucose from carb intake is burned off to speed metabolism so you lose weight.

WHAT ARE HEALTHY FATS? Unlike people, all fats are not created equal! Fats fall into three categories: Saturated fats are solid at room temperature like those found in butter, cheese, animal fats, and coconut oil.

Traditionally vilified as “bad fats”, the key is to consider the

source of your fat. Look for cold pressed, instead of refined or expeller pressed coconut oil. If consuming meat, dairy or eggs –check the label and choose “organic”, “pastured”, “grass fed”.

Unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature and fall into 2 subcategories: Monounsaturated considered among the healthiest include olive oil, almonds, sesame seeds, and avocados. Polyunsaturated fats (PUFA’s) are the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde fat variety since they contain the “good fats”, Omega 3’s like salmon, herring, mackerel, walnuts, flaxseed; and the bad fats (vegetable oils, some Omega 6’s) such as soybean, safflower, corn, cottonseed and yes, canola. These oils are chemically processed and prone to spoil in high heat, light conditions.

Trans fats are oils trans-

formed chemically through the injection of hydrogen and classified as carcinogens (causes cancer), similar to arsenic and cyanide. This is done to “preserve” taste and texture. It is found in packaged crackers, cakes, cookies, donuts, pizza dough, and vegetable oils heated to excessively high temperatures.

HOW FAT MAKES YOU FIT Consuming high fat, low carbohydrate meals actually helps you stay fuller for longer periods of time so you wind up eating and snacking less throughout the day. This is the primary reason that many traditional low fat diets don’t work –you’re always hungry. Here’s my diet plan: eat a nutrient rich, colorful (mostly green), variety of foods filled with healthy fats and fiber. The calories will take care of itself.

Lowering carbohydrate intake

(Breads, pastas, pastries, even grains like corn and wheat) and increasing fat ratio will also lower insulin and glucose levels. This means after your body is through burning glucose, it will more readily access your fat stores for energy; improving your body’s efficiency to burn fat.

So go ahead…ditch your burger for an avocado and tomato sandwich. How about a big fat salad of chopped kale, avocado, boiled egg, diced apple, crushed walnuts, cranberries, and olive oil with balsamic vinegar? Homemade

cinnamon spice oatmeal cookies with coconut oil instead of butter? Hmmm…doesn’t sound like deprivation to me.

ew “Essential Plan” makes coverage even more affordable for thousands of New Yorkers State of Health (NYSOH), the official health plan Marketplace, announced the insurers that will be offering the new Essential Health Plan to eligible, lower income New Yorkers. The Essential Plan has no annual deductible and offers the same essential benefits as other plans, including free preventive care. Consumers pay just $20 a month per adult or $0, depending on their income.

MetroPlus Health Plan, a subsidiary of NYC Health + Hospitals, ­is one of the health insurers offering the new lowest-cost product.

And MetroPlus is the only NYC health plan to actually lower its premiums for existing Marketplace products from the previous year and has launched an aggressive advertising campaign promoting this fact, which will continue into next year.

“Despite substantial enrollment in health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, it is estimated that over 400,000 New Yorkers remain uninsured and providing these New Yorkers with insurance is critical to the goal of ensuring health equality,” says MetroPlus Chief Operating Officer Seth Diamond.

To make sure New Yorkers are aware of this low-cost option,

MetroPlus will be running ads in the subway, on city buses, at street level, on radio, online, in social media as well as a new broad-based television campaign.

“The enhanced outreach and advertising are required to reach those who, despite substantial publicity over a two-year period, have not yet enrolled in health insurance,” Diamond says. “The implementation of the Essential Plan during 2015 Open Enrollment, coupled with reduced MetroPlus prices, bring new opportunities for low income New Yorkers to receive low price, quality health insurance for 2016,” he added.

Already the plan of choice for nearly half a million New York-

ers, MetroPlus offers access to a network of over 12,000 primary care physicians and specialist sites across the city and has the most affordable options in three of the four metal levels available on the Marketplace. The plan covers all essential health benefits, including emergency services, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use services, prescription drugs, and preventive and wellness services. It also offers a vision and dental rider for an additional low cost; the rate varies per level.

Nearly 67 percent of new members shopping on the Marketplace chose this added level of care.

Open enrollment for coverage this year through the NYSOH Mar-

Bronx Borough President Diaz Cuts Ribbon at New Barber Training School

E

arlier this month Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. attended Beyond Beauty & Barber Academy official opening, supporting owner Javiel Rodriguez’s project that will provide hands-on job training, career services and other assistance needed to prepare students for a successful path to become a licensed barber.

BBBA education programs are designed for students to obtain the knowledge and skills to enhance their opportunity to work in the professional male grooming industry. The program will also prepare students for job interviews as well as the “State Board Practical Exam” required to obtain a Master Barber license, and will assist

them in finding employment with affiliated barbershops looking for licensed employees.

“We are building a diverse economy in The Bronx, and we are creating new jobs in a variety of fields. From our nascent tech sector, to our new retail hubs, to our burgeoning industrial and manufacturing, we are creating jobs for all Bronxites,” said Borough President Diaz.

“Today’s announcement creates a new opportunity where Bronxites can train for employment in an industry that has proven to be resistant to economic fluctuations.”

Since Borough President Diaz took office in 2009, The Bronx has seen more than $7 billion in

total development, which has led to the creation of over 15,000 new jobs. In addition, the unemployment rate in The Bronx fell to 6.6 percent in September 2015, down from 7.3 percent in August 2015

tate Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/ We s t c h e s t e r ) announced $50,000 in state funding for the Countdown to Fitness program at a luncheon

on Saturday at the Shorehaven Community Center.

Nearly 70 women from the south Bronx received certificates from Senator Klein

for completing the 10week fitness program.

Participants took Zumba, kickboxing and dance classes; learned how to make healthy and delicious recipes like baked apples, sauteed cauliflower and cucumber blueberry salad; and learned more about immunizations, heart disease, cancer screenings and stress management.

Another 10-week session will be held in the Spring.

Borough President Diaz Urges Bronx Residents to Apply to Their Local Community Board

ronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. is inviting Bronx residents to make a difference in their community by joining their local Community Board.

The Office of The Bronx Borough President will be accepting applications for all 12 Community Boards from city residents who reside, work or have professional or other significant interests in The Bronx.

“Participation on local Community Boards can provide Bronx residents with a forum to share with their community their expertise and talents,” stated Borough President Diaz. “There are great things happening in The

Bronx that involve the participation of community boards.

It is important that community residents participate in the decisions that are building and revitalizing our borough, and our community boards are a great place to do so,” said Borough President Diaz.

In addition, Borough President Diaz is encouraging young people ages 16 and 17 to apply for community board membership. Last year, the borough president appointed five young people to the community boards, and is working to insure that there is a least one youth member per community board.

“I believe that the earlier young people become en-

gaged in community affairs and interact with government officials and agencies, the better they will understand government and become active leaders in their communities.

It is important to hear the voices of our youth when planning for our neighborhoods.” said Borough President Diaz.

orough President Melinda Katz presented Citations of Honor today to two Queens residents who are among the first Americans to qualify for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Borough President Katz welcomed table tennis players Jennifer Wu and Tahl Leibovitz to Queens Borough Hall and congratulated the pair for making the 2016 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams, respectively (photo attached). The pair qualified for Rio by winning Gold Medals in Toronto, Canada this summer at the 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games.

“We in Queens are so proud of Jennifer and Tahl’s accomplishments and are eagerly an-

ticipating seeing them compete in Rio de Janeiro,” Borough President KATZ said. “Tahl and Jennifer are excellent role models for youth, and in Rio they will certainly be outstanding representatives of our country and the World’s Borough. Queens residents have the Olympic spirt and

will be cheering hard for Jennifer and Tahl and all the members of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams when the Rio Games begin next summer.”

Jennifer Wu (also known as Yue Wu) is a 25-year-old Flushing resident who was born in Beijing, China and who be-

came a United States citizen this March after she fell in love with and moved to the United States in 2008. During the 2015 Pan American Games, Ms. Wu won the women’s singles table tennis title in impressive fashion by prevailing in all seven of her matches en route to capturing her Gold Medal. Her Pan Am Gold Medal victory qualified Ms. Wu to compete in women’s table tennis for the U.S. at the 2016 Summer Olympics, which will be held August 5-August 21 in Rio. Tahl Leibovitz is a 40-yearold native of Haifa, Israel who moved with his family to the U.S. when he was three years old and now lives in South Ozone Park.

He is one of the most decorated athletes in U.S. table tennis his-

tory and will be inducted into the USA Table Tennis Hall of Fame in December. He qualified for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio by winning a Gold Medal in Class 9 men’s singles table tennis in Toronto.

Mr. Leibovitz has osteochondroma, a condition characterized by noncancerous but often painful bone tumors. He had a troubled home life when he was a kid and sometimes slept in the New York City subway system when he was homeless for a time during his teenage years, as he has documented in his book “Ping Pong for Fighters.” He has overcome these obstacles to obtain a Master’s degree in Urban Affairs from Queens College and a Masters in Clinical Social Work

from New York University’s Silver School of Social Work. He will soon take the exam to be a Licensed Master Social Worker with the goal of working with underserved populations, including veterans, addicts and homeless people.

The Rio Games will be the first Olympics appearance for Ms. Wu and the fifth Paralympics appearance for Mr. Leibovitz, who won a Gold Medal in Class 7 in 1996 and a Bronze Medal in Class 9 in 2004. In the Paralympics table tennis competitors are divided into classes, with Class 9 players having some of the least severe physical limitations and Class 1 players having the most severe limitations.
