housands of people, including a cadre of faith leaders from the Reconciled Church Movement (RCM), that represents various faith-based communities, joined the Rev. Al Sharpton and members of his nonprofit National Action Network (NAN) in Washington, D.C. to rebuke President Donald Trump and recommit themselves to the fight for social and economic justice.

The longtime civil rights activist said the turnout of about 3,000 people, who participated in the Ministers March for Justice marked one of the largest-ever interfaith gatherings in protest of racism in America. “[Just] as [Martin Luther King Jr.] marched 54 years

ago, we are still marching for voting rights, health care, criminal justice reform and economic justice,” said Sharpton, who marched Monday alongside the likes of Martin Luther King III. The nearly two-mile march, which began shortly after noon at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and stopped briefly for prayer outside the Trump Hotel before moving to the Justice Department building, coincided with the 54th anniversary of the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Johnnie Green, senior pastor of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Harlem, New York, thanked Sharpton for organizing the march.

“We’re here today, because many of those who sit in the seat of power — the president, the Republican Congress and the Republican Senate—they’ve once again written us a bad check,” Green said. “The check written to millions of Americans—Black, brown, Jewish, Muslim and many others—has come back stamped with insufficient funds.”

Green continued: “When you try to take away healthcare for 26 million Americans, you’re trying to issue us another bad check. When you co-sign the killings of people of color in the name of law and order, and leave our Black bodies lying in the streets for more than four hours and refuse to hear

The march came on the heels of Trump’s sullen response surrounding a White supremacist rally held last month in Charlottesville, Virginia, after city officials had contemplated the re-

moval of Confederate statues. A couple of days after the rally, in which counter protester Heather Heyer was killed.

Jeffrey David Cox, president of the 700,000-member American Federation of Government Employees located in northwest D.C., told the crowd there’s no room in this country for hatred.

“It’s time to take those statues down,” Cox said.

“But leave the base so we [can] tell our children and our grandchildren what an evil wicked thing this country did.”

SCHOOLS MUST WELCOME PARTICIPATION FROM ALL PARENTS

ncreasing parental engagement in education has been an important task for education policy makers.

While it is unfortunate that some parents do not wish to become more involved, and may not know why they should be, those who do wish to be more engaged can learn how to get more involved.

Parental involvement creates positive, visible change, sets an example that influences others to participate, and nurtures student success. Parental engagement is also a major component of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the new national education law.

Local education agencies and schools should make parents and community stakeholders aware of public school board meetings to foster community engagement. Attending these meetings, allows community members to find out what their school district’s estab-

lished goals are, how they intend to achieve those goals, the priorities of funding and budgeting plans, and what is included in the approved curriculum.

These meetings also offer parents the opportunity to verbalize opinions, needs, questions, or concerns to the board and community.

School board meetings should be safe spaces for honest dialogue, where parents feel comfortable to address their concerns and actively participate in the decision making that affects their children.

Back-to-school nights are also a great tool that can be used to increase parental engagement with educators. Schools can use back-to-school nights to communicate needs and ask parents for their assistance through volunteer opportunities that are cognizant of varying times of availability and skill set.

As parents get more involved, they become

more comfortable with the environment and are more likely to participate in future activities. This should be a goal for all schools.

Lastly, transparency is essential to building successful parent-teacher partnerships. Transparency is also an important aspect of ESSA. ESSA requires states and school districts to be more transparent, specifically with parents; mandating more detailed district report cards and a breakdown of data for all student groups. Parents should always know, if their student needs assistance or is excelling.

Assigning homework that includes family input and inviting parents to view student presentations are other examples that may get parents engaged in their child’s education.

More information, rather than less, is preferred when it comes to academic achievement.

Producing successful students requires patience, support and community partnership. Parental involvement is one of many things that help students overcome obstacles and it also gives students the extra push needed to be great. All parents are different, some are proactive; others need an invitation. It is the educators’ duty to invite them.

he competition for affordable properties will be intensifying as the fall home buying season starts.

This is still very much a seller’s market as the demand for housing outweighs the supply.

The housing shortage is causing many prospective buyers to purchase units sometimes for the wrong reasons.

Here are three basic questions you must consider when looking for a home.

(1) Can you comfortably afford the mortgage payment in addition to your other monthly living expenses?

This is where your monthly household budget can help you in determining just how much you can afford to spend.

Remember the bank will determine your pre-approval

amount based on your gross monthly income. However, you live on net income. It is no good to purchase property that you cannot afford. You will find yourself working an extra job to not to lose your home.

You will be working to pay your mortgage.

(2) Does the property meet your needs? It does not make sense to purchase a home that is too small just because you can afford it, but it does not meet your family’s needs –i.e. not enough bedrooms, bathroom etc. Adequate space is extremely difficult to find especially if you want to stay in Harlem, but take your time with the search. Work closely with your real estate agent, constantly search the real estate websites and be patient.

Don’t settle for a home just because of the price.

(3) How safe is the neighborhood? New York City can be a dangerous place to live, so you want to make sure that your home and community is as safe as possible. Police protection and neighborhood watch and block associations will become valuable assets in the process.

If this article does not move you to help keep this legacy alive, then you must see “The King of Stage: The Woodie King Jr. Story.” This memorable documentary was directed and produced by Juney Smith.

Mr. Smith is an established actor and director. After you see this documentary, you will see why Mr. King trusted Mr. Smith to help tell his story. It is clear that Juney Smith’s talents and gifts are ideal for creating these types of films. He should be the go-to director when it comes to documenting icons.

Unfortunately, in the past, Black accomplishments were not recorded. In most cases, their ideas and inventions were stolen and credited to slave owners. Ironically, Harriet Tubman had no record of her

own birth but she believed in keeping things documented.

She and William Still documented all of their freed slaves.

They did this in hopes of reuniting families.

Documenting Black lives has always mattered. And it should be done as professionally as this documentary film.

Reed R. McCants, is imperative to this film. Not only is he one of the executive producers, but he is the Director of Photography and Editor. His camera shots were great and his editing was superb. He really helped to tell Mr. King’s story.

The greatest thing about “King of Stage” is Woody King Jr.’s input. He sits in front of the camera and tells his own story. There are so many Black living icons that should consider telling their stories. Can you imagine a “Black Living Icon Film Festival?” Wouldn’t you go? “King of Stage: The Woodie King Jr. Story” will be in all of the Film Festivals before making its debut on television.

n Monday, August 28, a group of diverse theatergoers lined up in front of the Dwyer Cultural Center in Harlem. The star-studded line extended up and around the block. Obviously, there was something special going on that evening.

It was the screening of a documentary. But, not just any documentary. The crowd was there to view “King of Stage: The Woodie King Jr. Story.”

Woodie King Jr. is the founder of The New Federal Theater (NFT). The theater was established in 1970 and is one of the first Black theaters in New York. As stated on their website, their mission is to integrate minorities and women into the mainstream of American Theater.

How does the NFT accomplish this? They do it by training minority artists for the profession, presenting plays by minorities and creating multi-cultural plays. Even more, the NFT gives minority audiences the opportunity to appreciate live theater. The NFT has helped to launch the careers of many minority playwrights and actors.

The NFT has showcased playwrights such as Ntozake Shange, Laurence Holder, Amiri Baraka, J.E. Franklin and many more. Many wellknown actors have trained and performed at NFT. Those actors include Ruby Dee, Ella Joyce, Denzel Washington, Robert Downey Jr., Phylicia Rashad, Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman and many more.

The fact that the “New Federal Theater” has helped to develop such great talent, proves that they have a reputable and productive program. This program needs to be continuously

F

or its 50th season, The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. (NEC) has been presenting a retrospective of some of the troupe’s signature works. The culminating event of this landmark season will be NEC’s most famous and successful production, “A Soldier’s Play” by Charles Fuller, which NEC first presented in 1981 at Theatre Four. That production ran for two years, earned unanimous praise and launched the careers of many current stars, but has never again had a major production in New York. NEC will revive the play September 27 to October 8 at Theatre 80 St. Marks, directed by Charles Weldon, the troupe’s current Artistic Director.

The play uses a murder mystery during World War II to expose angers and resentments among African Americans that curiously mimic white racist attitudes. A black Captain is sent to investigate the murder of a black Sergeant. The setting is a segregated

Army base in Louisiana where a black officer wielding authority is unprecedented and bitterly resented. The Sargent is revealed as tyrannical in nature and disgusted with his fellow black soldiers, particularly those from the rural South. The unit is comprised of former Negro Leagues players who were grouped as a unit in order to provide entertainment. Their success playing against white soldiers makes them so popular that it generates talk of them playing against the Yankees in an exhibition game. Nevertheless, they are assigned to menial jobs. The Sargent’s murder at first seems attributable to the local KKK. But when the true murderers are found, surprising and unsettling divisions among the black troops will be revealed. Social forces that might be unveiled, however, will be swept under the rug of history, since the platoon is about to deploy to Europe for the honor of participating in the great Allied invasion. The play won the Pulitzer Prize, an Outer Critics Circle

n the wall in my office is a map of a few blocks in Harlem with bright red zones that indicate ‘high density areas of poorly controlled diabetes.’ Tens of thousands of people live within those blocks – they are part of the epidemic of diabetes that continues to spread in Harlem.

Is your diabetes poorly controlled too, or is it under control?

Either way, your feet have to be one of your major concerns.

If you’re a diabetic, your feet should always be at the top of your mind – a diabetic’s poor circulation

Five Tips for Parents as kids go Back to School

A

s we get ready to go Back to School, I am reminded of the dedicated parents who will do anything and everything to ensure their children get a high-quality education.

Too often, the parents in the neighborhoods we serve end up shouldering the burden of schools that don’t provide adequate support and resources for their kids.

The Department of Education has ranked many schools in our city’s poorest neighborhoods as “failing.” Here at the New York City Mission Society, we do everything in our power to help alleviate that burden.

Below are some quick

tips for parents to get ready for Back to School.

• Stay engaged. It is common for children to experience anxiety during the transition process as they prepare to enter into a new school year. Be patient with your children, ask questions, and do your best to understand what exactly is causing them anxiety.

• Stay positive. Remind your child of a time when a moment of uncertainty evolved into a positive experience.

Encourage them to look for new opportunities that weren’t available to them before this school year, perhaps a club or sports team.

• Stay on track. During the summer months, children’s routines and schedules may be more flexible. Ease into your child’s new school year routine a few weeks before the first day of school.

• Stay organized. Keep a list of important names and phone numbers, holidays, early dismissals, and school events onhand so things don’t catch you off-guard. Try to arrange childcare as far in advance as possible.

• Stay connected. If you aren’t able to attend your child’s Back to School night, contact your child’s teacher to set up a separate meeting. Prepare in advance to discuss any concerns

you may have with your child’s teacher, candidly. It’s important to have an open and honest dialogue with the other

adults in your child’s life.

By starting the school year off on the right foot, you can set the tone for the

year to come!

Study Tips for Busy College Students

W

ith seemingly endless reading, lengthy term papers and makeor-break exams, the academic life of a college student can be nothing short of demanding.

What’s more, many students hold down parttime jobs and participate in extracurriculars during the semester.

While there are only so many hours in a day, students can make more of the time they do have by studying smarter, not harder. Here are a few tips to keep your head above water.

• Take smarter notes.

Gone are the days of taking furious notes in class by hand. However, merely typing up class notes is

• Use new resources.

Indian Summer

I

ndian Summer is a period between late September and mid-November it is a time when the weather turns warm after the first frost. There are many theories on how the name of this period of time when the cold weather becomes warm once more came to be.

Most of these theories come from a European point of view; much like the term “Indian”. When I was in the Army a Native American friend would always jokingly say “When Columbus

discovered my people in America he thought he was in India so he called us Indians; I am glad he was not trying to get to Turkey”.

One interesting theory on how the term Indian Summer came to be was during the wars between the European settlers and the Native Americans, the Native Americans would usually stop attacking the settlements when the weather turned cold.

After the first frost when the weather became warm again the Native Americans would often attack one more time. The settlers called this time Indian Summer. Global Warming has created such a change in our weather warm weather can develop in mid-winter; this is drastical-

In Taoism the seasonal time for what we call Indian Summer is late Spring into mid-Fall. Each season is associated with one of the five elements Wood, Fire Earth, Metal and Water. Earth is the element associated with the season known as Indian Summer.

The Yin earth organ is the Pancreas, the Yang earth organ is the Stomach. Saturn is the planet and the direction is the center during this time of year. Yellow and Brown are the colors for this season and it is a time to practice being centered and balanced.

Worry and anxiety are the negative emotions for this season and it is a time to pay attention to the lymphatic and Muscular systems.

Digestion can sometimes become an issue during this time mainly due to worry and anxiety two negative emotions that create stomach problems if not addressed

during this period of time.

Fairness and openness are the positive emotions during this time of year.

Meditation and energy balancing exercises like Tai Chi, Ki Training and Yoga can be very helpful during the earth season. I will start

he 4th HEART CHAKRA, is the center chakra, and divides lower three chakras (that are focused on our survival, sexuality and self-empowerment) from the upper three chakras (that govern our ability to communicate our feelings, spirituality and awareness of, and connection to, the Creator.

The Heart Chakra deals with universal consciousness and unconditional love. The heart, lungs, chest and arms are all controlled by it and is represented by the color green and pink (my favorite crystal for this chakra is Unakite – a beautiful pallet of green and pink mixed to-

gether).

As the center of all energies, the heart unifies our being, as a whole. A discord or imbalance in the heart chakra will adversely affect all the other centers. Meditation on the heart chakra will improve the interaction of all the other centers. It is important to maintain a balance to all the energy centers so a healthy level of awareness is manifested in our everyday lives.

Normally, when the 4th Chakra is balanced, we feel compassionate, friendly, empathetic, nurturing of others and we see the good in others. When out of balance, you may feel sorry for yourself, paranoid, indecisive, afraid of letting

Interview with illustrator Ron Nelson

by L.A. Williams ime will tell, but fans of (H)afrocentric think it’s going to be “the next big thing.”

Its illustrator, Ronald Nelson, offers insights.

L.A. Williams (LAW): So what is (H)afrocentric?

Ronald Nelson (RN): The title is a portmanteau of “half” and “Afrocentric,” and refers to the series’ main character, half black, half white, revolutionary-hopeful Naima Pepper who struggles to affect social change while dealing with the anxieties of being a millennial. (H) afrocentric satirizes events and addresses feminism, activism, diversity and pop culture.

LAW: What do fans

seem to like most about it?

RN: The humor, as well as the diversity of characters and personalities.

While there’s a message most of the time, we make sure that at the end of the day, the content is funny.

LAW: Most comic BOOKS are done by a creative team where a

writer comes up with the premise and story and a team of artists illustrate the writer’s ideas. Most comic STRIPS are done by a singular creator who is both the writer and the main artist. (H)afrocentric is a comic strip now but began as a comic book, so it’s still created collaboratively.

What

does the writer, Juliana “Jewels” Smith, bring to (H)afrocentric?

RN: Jewels is the creator of the series. She’s an accomplished writer and activist. She brings the initial ideas for content.

LAW: And you...?

RN: I feel I provide entertaining visuals that translate well into sequen-

tial art. One of my initial tasks was to redesign the primary characters and to create the look for new supporting characters. And I introduced the idea for creating a (H)afrocentric comic strip and the strip’s popularity is now on par with that of the original (H) afrocentric comic books.

LAW: Walk us through the process. How does it start?

RN: Jewels will send me a script and provide dialogue and a direction for the narrative within the panels. After that, I visualize the sequences and draw them. It’s a rather loose process because she trusts my creative eye, so I’m provided a lot of freedom.

I start in pencil and once I like what I’ve done, I finish

it with ink.

LAW: How long does that take?

RN: About 6 hours to pencil and ink one strip before I send it to the colorist and letterer, Mike Hampton, to complete.

LAW: What do you like most about the process?

RN: I enjoy visually interpreting what Jewels writes in a script. I enjoy the process of appearing to bring words to life. [They work from opposite coasts but] as long as the minds in a group are in sync, distance doesn’t really matter.

LAW: Where can interested people catch (H) afrocentric?
