We have included some images from the museum as well as coverage of the grand opening with President Barack Obama in this issue.. (see pages 16-17) We lost another Tuskegee Airman this month, Dabney Montgomery.

Earlier this summer in July we lost Roscoe C. Brown, Jr. Alice Bernstein interviewed Mr. Montgomery as part of a series -“The Forces of Ethics in Civil Rights,” which is an oral history project. (see page 12) If you saw the presidential debate earlier this week, you know “you ‘must’ vote.” I encourage each of you to call on at least 10 others to join you. mall businesses employ half of the private sector in the US and create two out of three new jobs, according to the Small Business Administration. or the first time in our nation’s history, the majority of students in public schools are students of color. But in most places, communities of color still have little meaningful say in how their states manage and resource education. As a result, too many students in this new majority are in overcrowded classes and inadequate facilities where teachers are overworked, underpaid and stuck with a curriculum that lacks rigor and relevance.

All students deserve the opportunity to learn and work hard in a healthy environment with excellent teachers, but even 62 years after Brown v. Board of Education, our nation is reeling from the unfulfilled promise of an equal education for all. Educational equity is vital to our nation; two-thirds of all future jobs will require some level of higher education, and research suggests that within the next 10 years, our economy will face a deficit of 11 million skilled workers. Continuing policies that fail to prepare all students for college and careers is an immoral and self-defeating choice that stunts our nation’s economic potential — and mocks our democratic ideals.

But now there’s an opportunity for states, districts and schools to make a better choice. The

Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA, the federal education law Congress passed late last year, requires that parents and communities be meaningfully engaged in determining how states equitably educate their children.

Under ESSA, every single state and school district is confronted with a question of enormous consequence: Will they work with new majority communities to develop plans and policies that ensure excellent schools for all children? Or will they continue to make their decisions in a bubble, avoid accountability and do a disservice to students in the process?

Progress is not guaranteed.

For this new law to improve education for every student, states need to put communities in the driver’s seat and focus on the interests of marginalized students.

We have always had strong, clear and diverse voices demanding that our education system serve the interests of their children — but decision-makers rarely listen.

Recent research shows that Black and Latino parents understand what the problems exist in their children’s schools — and they have clear ideas about what should change. They know that the schools their children attend don’t get as much funding as schools White children attend; they know their children aren’t getting as good an education as White children; and they know that race is at least one of the reasons why. But they also believe good teaching and high expectations are critical and they want both for their children.

This is all information that states should be taking into account when determining their policies and programs under the new law. And to do that, states, districts, and schools have to engage new majority parents and communities. They have to build strong accountability systems that identify and target meaningful support and improvement in any school where all students — or

any group of students — are not learning. They have to provide robust data and reporting about how well schools are educating students and they have to provide them in formats and languages that parents can understand. And, as communities of color demand, they have to distribute resources — high-quality teachers, challenging coursework, up-to-date facilities and classroom materials — more equitably.

Last year during the debate over the new law, states argued that they were in the best position to make decisions that would benefit all students. Now is the time to prove it.

Every single child in this great country deserves a worldclass education. But that can’t happen if states and districts ignore the priorities of the families they serve. Experience shows that this can be done. All we need is the will to sit down, open our minds and listen to what all families are saying.

ne of the key learning tools for the first time home buying is mastering the art of negotiation.

A successful negotiation can reduce the purchase price by several thousands of dollars.

In order to be successful, you must be able to interpret the current conditions in the housing market.

Here are some tips to assist you: (1) remember an asking price is just that - an asking price. Everything is negotiable in real estate. Appraisal values will fluctuate depending on several housing factors, including location, condition and age of the unit, and comps - what similar properties have recently sold and at what price?

is important because a lender will not approve your loan if the appraised value is less than the agreed selling price.

(2) Do your research. Try to determine how long has the property you are considering been on the market? What homes have recently been sold in the neighborhood? Have there been any short sales or foreclosures in the neighborhood. These are factors that can lower the overall values of other property. Homeowners are less likely to drop down on the price if the home has only been on the market for a short period of time. Know exactly how much you can afford to spend.

(3) Be willing to walk away. If you cannot agree to a

price within your range do not be afraid to walk away from the house and look for another.

Even in a sellers’ market there are other homes available. If the first one does not work out just continue on your quest.

You want to get a good feel for what is available in the market and compare the different features of the property. Also consider the neighborhood; how convenient is it for shopping, transportation etc. Try to attend as many open houses as possible.

In his early 20s he created Ever Young, a portrait studio in Jamestown Accra. His photographs documented the transition of Ghana to an independent country, and portrayed Britain’s transition to a multicultural society in the 60s.

Barnor will share his visual ethos and discuss the critically-acclaimed retrospective solo exhibition of his works, Ever Young. The program discussion will be moderated by Grace Ali, faculty member in the Department of Art & Public Policy at New York University and Founder/Editorial Director of OF NOTE, an-award winning online magazine on art and activism. Honoring Dabney Montgomery, Tuskegee Airman & Civil Rights Pioneer

I

join with many others in honoring Tuskegee Airman Dabney Montgomery who died in Harlem on September 3 at age 93. His funeral took place at Mother A.M.E. Zion Church where he was the church historian.

Born in Selma, Alabama in 1923, he grew up amid rampant racial injustice in the Jim Crow South. And racism also permeated the US military where black men were segregated, denied leadership roles, and were prohibited from flying planes. But some change began during World War II, and when Mr. Montgomery was drafted in 1943 he served as a crewman in the first all-black aviator unit, the legendary Tuskegee Airmen of the U.S. Army Air

These valiant men served with distinction, and rarely lost a bomber. Yet, appallingly, as black servicemen came home from the war, they couldn’t ride in “white” sections on trains as they passed through the South. And, what’s more, these American heroes had to leave the dining cars so that Nazi prisoners of war who were being transported to POW camps, could eat there!

Dabney Montgomery is among 200 men and women nationwide I had the privilege of interviewing for “The Force of Ethics in Civil Rights” oral history project of the not-for-profit Alliance of Ethics & Art, videographed by David Bernstein. In an article about his experience as cameraman for this project, David Bernstein (noted photographer and Air Force veteran) tells what it meant to him to learn from Mr. Montgomery’s life: “The brave choices he made in the military and at home are important to American history.”

And about the racism he himself endured, Dabney Montgomery said later, “What I learned from Aesthetic Realism, helped me to understand what happened.”

hen it comes to feelings about finances, working Americans are practically split down the middle, according to a recent study.

Fifty-five percent of employed Americans feel they are on the right track to achieving financial well-being, while the other 45 percent feel they are not headed in the right direction, according to the 2016 Lincoln Financial Group Measuring Optimism, Outlook and Direction (M.O.O.D.) of America study.

So what are those individuals on the right track doing so well? The study found five key factors -behaviors and influencers -- in their lives that correlate to positive feelings about money.

“Right trackers” differ from their counterparts who are not on the right track because: • They are more likely to have created formal financial plans -- more than 70 percent of them, in fact.

• They are forward-looking in general, with nearly 100 percent saying they are focused on the future. Also, 90 percent of those in the “right track” camp say they feel in control of their lives.

• They exercise more.

Those with positive feelings about money tend to be active. About 80 percent of this group exercises at least once a week, and typically more often.

Compare that with those who are not on the right track -- just 60 percent of that segment works out on

NICU BABIES PARTICIPATE IN SPECIAL “FUN RUN” DURING NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE AWARENESS MONTH

abies who spent several weeks and months battling for their lives at the Weiler Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will gather together with their families and medical teams for the “Babies on the Run,” half mile run/walk around the Einstein Campus, followed by a party where the attendees will celebrate their health and enjoy food, face-painting and music.

This event, being held during Neonatal Intensive Care Awareness Month, will give parents the opportunity to reconnect with providers and each other, and also offer hope to parents whose children are currently being cared for in the NICU. There will also be a memorial celebration held in honor of babies who passed

away.

Parents and providers who are part of the Family Support Group at the Weiler NICU coordinate several events throughout the year to raise funds and the spirits of families going through challenging times. The funds raised during this special event will help purchase new technology that will allow parents at home or work to check-in on their ba-

bies as they receive care in the NICU. Neonatal Intensive Care Awareness Month is an initiative designed to raise awareness and honor NICU patients, their families, and the health professionals who care for them.

Empowerment Program For Teen Girls Hosts Annual Workshop In Harlem

“The Power of You Teens - Third Annual Back to School Empowerment Experience,” held its yearly workshop Sept. 25 at the Alhambra Ballroom.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer was among the approximate-

ly 300 participants, who were treated to performances, a fashion show, inspirational talks and gift bags as part of the free event.

“This is a day of education, it’s a day of empowerment, it’s a day of fun,” Felicia Gibson Jaycox, the nonprofit’s CEO and founder, told the Harlem News.

“We wanted to bring these teens and their families to celebrate girl power.”

Lea Robinson, a singer and the granddaughter of Sugar Hill Records found-

er Sylvia Robinson, performed a few songs for the audience, and the mentor said when she heard about the opportunity to help out teens, she jumped at the chance.

“I want to use my firsts and talents to help other people,” said Robinson, who is in the midst of filming a reality show for Bravo about her life and family. “I love anything that empowers someone, especially the youth.”

The theme for this year’s program was

“Girl Rising,” and honorees included Chloe Njapa, a nine year old fundraiser who shaved her head in solidarity with a family friend battling cancer, a move that generated more than $8,000 in donations.

“I got my award because I did something good to help other people,” Njapa said. “I cut my hair to raise money to support my friend.”

And Njapa had at least one VIP fan Lea Robinson.

“I almost cried when I saw Chloe,”

she said. “That just touched me. To be so young and be so selfless, that’s just incredible.”

Another honoree, singer, songwriter and actress Emerald Young, 17, said she was “very very honored and very blessed” to receive an award for her volunteer work to empower young women and show them that their dreams can come true.

“I want to show girls that the sky is the limit,” Young said, adding that she wants to work in philanthropy

when she becomes an adult. “Anything you want to do, you can do.”

The rising star also performed at the event and hosted a fashion show.

Young’s mother, Jennifer Rampersaud, gushed about how gratified she was of her girl’s recognition.

“I’m very proud of her,” she said, “and I’m very proud to be her mom. She is being rewarded for all the hard work and sacrifices she’s made from a young age.”

t a time when even yogurt has come under scrutiny for its sugar content, it’s hard to know what constitutes a healthful lunch anymore.

Any way you slice it, too much sugar can be harmful for your health. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends no more than 16 grams of sugar daily for toddlers and a maximum of 32 grams of sugar per day for teens. Many children as young as 1-3-years old already surpass daily recommendations -- typically consuming around 48 grams of sugar daily, according to an AHA study.

Older kids consume even more. Pediatric health experts recommend reducing sugar in children’s diets.

Some foods that you may not consider “sweet” have more sugar than you may think. A yogurt cup and a granola bar contain about 25 grams of sugar. That’s an entire day’s worth of sugar in one seemingly nutritious snack. Add a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a

espite one’s best intentions to send kids to school with a healthy homemade lunch, a lot can happen between the time you pack it up at home and when your child unpacks it in the cafeteria. But no one wants a soggy sandwich or warm milk for lunch.

And not only are some lunch time woes unappetizing, they can pose health risks.

Perishable food transported without a cooling source won’t stay safe for long. Indeed, harmful bacteria multiply rapidly after only two hours in the “danger zone,” the temperatures between 40 and 140 degrees F, according to the USDA.

The Yin and Yang Theory of Nature

e often hear the terms Yin and Yang, but many aren’t sure what the concept of Yin and Yang is. The answer can be very simple yet can also be very complex.

Yin being negative and yang being positive, represents the dynamic interaction that creates all reality.

Everything in our existence vibrates at its own frequency. The fact that all things are frequencies of vibrating energy means we are truly part of everything and everything is a part of us.

It may seem hard to comprehend that the table you sit at, the floor you

walk on or the door that you open are vibrating at a frequency that makes them seem to be solid. But if you could change the vibration of your hand to the exact frequency of that table, or door, your hand could actually pass through them.

Many who study Eastern philosophies believe that light is the essence of all things. Science has proven that light radiates from our bodies. That light is called an aura. This aura, which is a subtle electromagnetic energy field, can also be found emanating from plants, animals, and even stones.

There are machines that can now read the human aura, which has different

colors such as green, blue and lavender. Each aura color, combination of colors, vibrancy of colors, and location of colors on and around your body reveal something about you and your state of mind.

You need the interaction between Yin energy and Yang energy to make light.

An easy way to understand this concept is by considering how a flashlight works.

ere are more herbs for various WOMEN’S LIFE CYCLES. Every woman should drink one-to-three cups of red raspberry tea daily. It is a specific tonic herb for the entire reproductive system, regardless of your age (after the onset of the menses).

To aid during childbirth: basil, lavender, nutmeg, red raspberry; squaw vine (taken during last two weeks).

To tone uterine muscles: red raspberry, apple peels, mint, blackberry and peach leaves (also reduces morning sickness).

To expel the placenta: chamomile, angelica root, pennyroyal, basil.

To restore the blood after

birth: alfalfa, comfrey; to heal placenta site: comfrey, plantain; to stop excess bleeding: yarrow, shepherd’s purse, nettle.

Other birthing herbs: blue cohosh, lobelia, squaw vine, sassafras.

Breastfeeding: bayberry, milkwort, chamomile, fennel, hops, blessed thistle, lavender.

To increase milk production: fennel seeds, alfalfa, borage, anise/star anise seeds.

To decrease milk: mugwort, sage, mullein, comfrey – for sore breasts use these as a leaf compress or tea.

AVOID DURING PREGNANCY: tansy, pennyroyal, rue, angelica.

ASK ALMA: MY SISTER JUST GOT PREGNANT AND SHE’S STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Alma, My younger, non-married sister is pregnant and she is going to ruin our standing in the community. I don’t know what she thinking or how she could let this happen. She is only thinking about herself and being totally selfish.

My father is the pastor of a very large church. My parents are very strong leaders, loving and supportive parents who taught us to be ambitious. I will graduate from college this

year with a business degree and plan to return to assist my parents in the ministry. My brother is a sophomore in college, majoring in architecture.

And here comes my baby sister, a high school junior, pregnant. I just can’t believe her. After she told my parents, my mother called my brother and me to let us know. I immediately rushed home and could see the pain and trauma on my mother’s face. This is the worst thing that could ever happen to my family and I’m not sure if we can recover. I am so angry right now, I just cannot speak.

Help me to explain to her that she has ruined, ruined

our family. And Alma, how can I assist my parents in this terrible situation?

She will be provided with support, reassurance, medical treatment, food and shelter.

You’re suffering from embarrassment, sweet pea, and there’s no need to call the doctor, because it won’t kill you. If you can’t offer the love and support that’s needed at this time, step

back, and allow yourself to be seen and not heard.

For the next nine months, this isn’t about you or your parents, it’s about your little sister.

Inwood Hill Park is reportedly one of the best places to spot a bald eagle in the city, after the Urban Park Rangers launched a bald eagle release project in the park in 2002. The “prehistoric roots” in this park are still evident with its “dramatic caves, valleys and ridges left as the result of shift-

ing glaciers” and Native American artifacts found in Inwood’s rock shelters.

If you love trees like I do, take a stroll through Inwood’s forest grove of tulip trees, oaks, maples and the park’s oldest trees, “two cotton woods planted before the park was even established” according to nycgovparks.org.

Trail Mix Recipe Now that our walking trails are set, it’s time to order in the snacks. First, a bit of history. Bet you didn’t know that August 31 is actually known as National Trail Mix Day! Trail mix is also an easy to carry, easy to store snack food that provides a quick “healthy” boost of energy from carbs, proteins and fats.

Ingredients: 1 cup unsalted raw almonds

1 cup pecans ¾ cup dried cranberries 1 cup pumpkin seeds ¾ cup sunflower seeds 5 tablespoons Grade B maple syrup ½ teaspoon of coarse salt Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and toss until syrup is evenly distributed. Place mixture on a baking sheet in single layer. Bake, stirring several times with a spatula until golden about 20 minutes. Sprinkle salt while still hot. Let cool and store in a plastic container.
