Michelle Obama Co-Chairs ‘When We All Vote’ New Ad Campaign Announces 2,000 Events

hen We All Vote, a non-partisan organization inspiring voter turnout in the run up to Election Day in November, is working on a National Week of Action. Former First Lady Michelle Obama is serving as a co-chair.

“When We All Vote, we get new ideas and new energy. We get leaders that share our values” says Mrs. Obama in a new commercial running on prominent digital platforms and on radio across the U.S. The commercial will air over the 14 days before voter registration deadlines. On September 20, When We All Vote launched a text message campaign allowing people to text WeAllVote to 97779 for voter registration information.

The 2018 cycle has been propelled by two elements: Dislike of President Donald Trump and a record number of women running for office. According to NBC News, there were 53 female Senate can-

didates, previous record was 40 in 2016, and 476 female House candidates, with the previous record being 298 in 2012. Among the 476 women who ran for a seat in the U.S. House, about 75 percent were Democrats.

Over 52 percent of Democratic House female candidates won their primary races. There percentage was higher than for Democratic men or Republican women. The 2018 election cycle is expected to be a record one for female candidates.

Backlash to Trump’s presidency is widely seen as one of the main reasons as his disapprovals climb higher.

When We All Vote is planning a Week of Action in which volunteers will host nearly 2000 events across the U.S. The purpose of the events will be to register voters and recruit volunteers. When We All Vote previously announced that Michelle Obama will headline events during a Week of Action in Las Vegas on Sept. 23 and

Miami on Sept. 28.

Along with the former First Lady, other Co-Chairs: Janelle Monae, Chris Paul, Tom Hanks and Faith Hill, will lead flagship events along with Loni Love, Keegan-Michael Key and Shonda Rhimes.

When We All Vote arrives as part of several efforts to spike voter turnout in a crucial “off-year” election at a time when voting numbers have increased dramatically when compared to the previous offyear cycle.

The workshop topics will be: (1) the steps in the home buying process and grant programs; (2) managing your money; (3) using credit wisely and (4) mortgage products and the application process. The Expo will provide an excellent opportunity for first time prospective buyers to acquire some essential information. Come and be prepared to spend the day learning about buying a home in Harlem!

Columbia University Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Growing up in Mexico City, Aliza Nisenbaum knew she wanted to make a difference in the world. She contemplated becoming a psychologist, but wrestled with her deeper desire to become an artist who addresses issues of social justice. Art won out. Now a professor at Columbia School of the Arts, Nisenbaum is making the impact she long sought.

From 2012 to 2016, she painted portraits of undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America, whom she met at Immigrant Movement International, a community space in Queens. As a volunteer teacher there, Nisenbaum developed friendships with her students, who shared stories of how they came to the United States. Eventually, she asked to paint their

portraits. “I was always interested in how ethics comes into painting, and about the politics of visibility—how people are usually seen or depicted, and I was trying to show another side of that,” said Nisenbaum. “It’s very intimate, like painting as documentary.”

Nisenbaum brings this deep spirit of engagement to her teaching at Columbia. “Teaching art is not a straight line. You have to give of yourself and be sincere,” said Nisenbaum. “It’s mostly about the students. But they also want professional advice, and they ask questions about your own life as an artist and about how to belong to a meaningful community once they graduate.”

Autumn the Season of Metal

W

hen you enter the meditation and training room at the Harlem Ki Energy Center, you will see a circular symbol which represents the five elements Fire, Water, Wood, Earth and Metal. This symbol is called the Symbol of Truth by many Taoist because the five elements are considered to be the true foundation of life.

Autumn is the season

of the element of metal. Each of the five elements has a relationship with the universe and the human body.

The Yin/Yang organs that correspond to the element of Metal are the Lungs (Yin) and the Large Intestine (Yang). It is very important to develop a detoxification strategy in autumn, to prepare for the coming winter. More people die from colon cancer and lung cancer than any other cancer related disease. Special attention should always be given to the care of the lungs and

large intestine in the autumn.

The large intestine is the last part of the digestive system in humans and all vertebrate animals. Its function is to absorb water from the remaining indigestible food matter and then pass useless waste material from the body. The large intestine consists of the cecum, colon, rectum and anal canal.

The lungs mix blood with oxygen, and expel used air, carbon dioxide, and other toxins. The lungs control skin and sweat. The following are recommended

That’s what Mom said when you wanted her to take you somewhere this summer. What’s wrong with your feet, she asked, are your shoes broken?

So you hoofed it everywhere, and that’s what changed your summer.

In the new book “So Tall Within” by Gary D. Schmidt, illustrated by Daniel Minter, walking changed the world.

When Isabella was small, her mother, Mau-mau Bett, took her outside to see the stars and the moon.

Mau-mau Bett said

that what Isabella saw in the sky were the same things her brothers and sisters could see and that comforted Isabella. She couldn’t remember her brothers and sisters. There were “ten or twelve” of them, and they’d been sold as slaves when she was

just a baby.

At nine years old, Isabella was sold away from Mau-mau Bett, along with a small flock of sheep. She had the stars and the moon to comfort her but, though it hurt to be away from her mother, Isabella was kept so busy that she scarcely had a chance to think about it. She worked first for this family, then for that man, and another until she was forced to marry a slave named Thomas and have children of her own.

She sometimes wondered if they, and their children would also be slaves someday. Once,

Women of Excellence Awards & Sweet 16 Anniversary Celebration

t was a dual celebration and double cause for applause. On Friday, September 14, The New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce (NYWCC) honored the accomplishments of 10 remarkable women and those who support them at its annual Women of Excellence awards ceremony, then cheered the NYWCC’s own milestone moment: its ‘Sweet 16’ anniversary.

Many of this year’s honorees and presenters represented construction-related companies and agencies, a historically nontraditional industry for women that has made strides over the past 40+ years. The event was held at the Battery Gardens Restaurant in lower Manhattan.

Quenia Abreu, NYWCC president and founder, welcomed all saying “The NYWCC is about all of you.”

Lina Gottesman, chair of the NYWCC and president/ owner of Altus Metal, Marble and Wood, said “Today

we are recognizing women who have made a positive impact on society.”

Vera Moore, NYWCC board member and CEO of Vera Moore Cosmetics, applauded Abreu as “a visionary, a fighter, someone who never takes no for an answer.”

Abreu said that advocacy is a large part of the organization’s mission which lobbies at City Hall and in Albany to ensure that mandates for participation of MWBEs are renewed regularly and not allowed to sunset.

The event also raised funds for ContractHER, a new NYWCC program working to increase the number of city, state and private contracts awarded to women entrepreneurs, with a focus on women of color. Abreu saluted LaToya Smith, president of Brass City Media and participant of the first ContractHer Cohort.

Presenters also included

NYWCC board members Claire Scanlon, former vice president, BNY-Mellon; Eugenia Foxworth of Foxworth Realty; and Stephanie Burns, director, community affairs, Turner Construction Co.
