The Mid-Manhattan NAACP held their 17th annual Freedom Fund Luncheon this past weekend.

Six distinguished and deserving individuals were honored. The NAACP will remain relevant as long as there are racial disparities and civil rights violations in the United States. If you are not a member now you should join the NAACP and support the work they do. The cost for an annual membership is $30 and there are lifetime memberships available from $1,500 up.

Last week we lost another icon in the community - Ruth Clarke. Ruth was known as being the first African American to own a temporary employment agency in New York. Memorial service information will be available soon..

We are calling on community leaders, influencers and entrepreneurs to rally their base, and join the Harlem Business Alliance (www.hbany.org), at the upcoming Black Economic Empowerment Breakfast. Our guest speaker is noted author, and financial literacy expert, Shawn D. Rochester,” says Regina Smith, Executive Director.

The racial wealth gap is one of the most pressing issues faced by our country today. Research shows: * For every $100 in white family wealth, Black families hold just $5.04. * More than one in four Black households have zero or negative net worth, compared to less than one in ten white families without wealth. * Black applicants were rejected at more than double the rate of white applicants on all types of loans, in-

cluding conventional mortgage.

The Harlem Business Alliance has been on the front line, advocating for Harlem, and the Black community at-large as it relates to education, equity, programming, entrepreneurship, preservation of culture, technology, and groundbreaking signature events including opportunities in cannabis and now, the Black Economic Empowerment Breakfast.

“We are missing 6 million jobs, 1.4 million businesses with staff and over $8 trillion of net worth in the Black Community. The Black Tax provides that understanding in a powerful and paradigm shifting, data-driven way and lays out an economic framework that we can use to address these massive gaps,” said Rochester.

success for CUP, as no temporary employee was dispatched out for service without passing a rigorous boot camp that included typing classes, interview training and strict dress code guidelines. Clark kept a stash of neckties in her desk draw for those in need.

Chase Manhattan Bank, a loyal client of CUP for over 20 years, was so impressed with their temps, they began sending prospective employees to Clark for training.

The success of CUP was also due in part to Clark’s life partner Gil McGriff who joined the company in 1978 and helped her grow the CUP empire from a few to hundreds of short-term employees as he took the lead opening their second location in the Wall Street area.

At age thirty-three with a booming business Clark and McGriff left their Harlem surroundings and purchased a co-op in the exclusive Sovereign building located in the Sutton Hill section of Manhattan. They were

the only African-Americans in the building, which was also home to iconic fashion designer Calvin Klein. The couple hosted legendary parties and gatherings for celebrities and politicians including New York City Mayor David N. Dinkins, Reverend Jesse Jackson and Mayor Ed Koch.

In 2008 Clark closed CUP’s doors after thirty-five successful years in business to focus on Support Network, Inc. (SNI), a non-profit organization she co-founded in the early 1980’s with a group of professional African-American women. SNI donated much needed medical equipment to Harlem Hospitals’ Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and scholarships for minority students to attend NYC’s best elemen-

tary prep schools from kindergarten to sixth grade.

Never one to rest on her laurels, Clark was currently the chairperson of the Community Advisory Board (CAB) at Renaissance Healthcare Network Sydenham and utilized her contacts, amassed over the years, to continue helping her community.

Ruth Clark has been celebrated by many for her life’s accomplishments and recently received a Lifetime Achievement in Business Award during the 2018 Harlem Fine Arts Show and will forever be remembered as the toast of the town who’s CUP never runneth over Ruth Clarke passed last week surrounded by loved ones. Her life celebration will be at Abyssinian Baptist Church,Sep 25th at 6:30PM.

Congressional Black Caucus Focus on Mid Term Elections and Health

n estimated 10,000 people filled the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Northwest Washington, DC over five days to hear vital issues facing African Americans and other minorities at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference.

Organizers left no stone unturned during the 48th annual event that featured honorary co-chairs, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey and Senator Kamala Harris of California. Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee served as chairperson throughout the conference which tackled such vital topics as infant mortality, the opioid crisis, health disparities, criminal justice reform and much more.

Naturally, the midterm elections commanded much attention. “We will walk through the storm together and we will be productive together,” said Jackson Lee during the opening news conference that featured the potential 2020 Democratic presidential ticket of Booker and Harris.

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams sat for a fireside chat during a luncheon titled, “Protecting the Health, Safety and Security of African American Communities.” “This is about lifting up health for all,” Adams said.

Another health disparities forum highlighted Census Bureau statistics which revealed that 54.4 percent of Blacks have private health insurance compared to 75.8 percent of non-Hispanic whites. Further, the data revealed that more Blacks – 43.6 percent – relied on public health insurance like Medicaid, compared to 32.7 percent of whites. What’s more, statistics show that African Americans have the highest mortality rate of any racial and ethnic group for all cancers combined and for most major cancers.

This year’s conference theme, “The Dream Still Demands,” paid tribute to the legacy of pivotal American civil and social movements of the past 50 years, while maintaining a goal of uplifting present-day champions in the fight for racial equality, justice and freedom.

A panel discussion on criminal justice reform included Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin and three black gubernatorial candidates – Ben Jealous of Maryland, Stacey Abrams of Georgia and Andrew Gillum of Florida brought in overflow crowds at the convention center.

Rep. Maxine Waters of California, who along with Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and Rep. Al Green of Texas each received the National Newspaper Publishers Association’s (NNPA) Leadership Award, helped to celebrate the hip-hop culture and stole the spotlight.

Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons of Run-DMC fame also appeared on a panel to discuss diabetes while Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson sat in on a School to Prison forum.

The weeklong event also celebrated a power shift sweep-

ing the nation: Black women are leading voter drives, running for office and winning. “We know that Black women have changed the world and continue to do that through our activism,” said Dr. Avis Jones-Deweever, a senior advisor for BWR Research & Resource Development.

“Young women are increasing their activism and there’s a 10 percent jump over the last year,” she said. “As always, our more mature sisters, almost two-thirds of us are active, as always.”

Dr. Elsie Scott said more women are pursuing other areas of elected office. “Since Trayvon Martin was murdered, we noticed more interest in prosecutors and more women running for prosecutors,” Scott said. “There are a number of Black women saying they don’t like the way they’re being prosecuted. What we find is women are winning in districts that are not predominately Black. If you look at the women of the Congressional Black Caucus, the majority of them now are in districts that are not majority Black,” she said.

“My friend Jesse Jackson said if you fight, you can win.

If you don’t fight, you will never know if you can win,” said Waters, who received an NNPA Leadership Award.

There does not appear to be anything available. This is the most serious challenge facing low to moderate income prospective first-time home buyers today. They want to buy and have started the home buying process but are finding the market prices beyond their purchasing limit. But what I am finding encouraging is the resolve these first-time buyers are demonstrating. They are not willing to compromise on pursuing their dream.

You must maintain a positive attitude if you are going to successfully complete this very difficult process. Here are some key points to keep in mind: (1) you must have an absolute desire to become a

homeowner. This desire of becoming a homeowner must be your primary focus. You must have an insatiable desire to become a homeowner. Nothing else should matter.

(2) Create a projected purchase date. Make a target of when you expect to be ready to buy. Push yourself hard to achieve this goal. Remind yourself constantly of your target. Let nothing get in your way. With perseverance you can achieve your dream of becoming a homeowner.

(3) Create a monthly household budget to help you monitor all spending. You must have the discipline to eliminate all wasteful spending and to aggressively save as much money as possible for your home purchase. This is a huge challenge to most

first-time buyers because their monthly living expenses are prohibiting them from saving an adequate amount of money each month.

This is where you will need the financial discipline to say “no” to excessive spending and perhaps even cutting some luxury items. You must change your entire attitude towards spending money to adapt the financial discipline required to complete the home buying process. Make it your goal to buy a home as soon as possible. Start the process now!

Columbia University Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Growing up in Mexico City, Aliza Nisenbaum knew she wanted to make a difference in the world. She contemplated becoming a psychologist, but wrestled with her deeper desire to become an artist who addresses issues of social justice. Art won out. Now a professor at Columbia School of the Arts, Nisenbaum is making the impact she long sought.

From 2012 to 2016, she painted portraits of undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America, whom she met at Immigrant Movement International, a community space in Queens. As a volunteer teacher there, Nisenbaum developed friendships with her students, who shared stories of how they came to the United States. Eventually, she asked to paint their

portraits. “I was always interested in how ethics comes into painting, and about the politics of visibility—how people are usually seen or depicted, and I was trying to show another side of that,” said Nisenbaum. “It’s very intimate, like painting as documentary.”

Nisenbaum brings this deep spirit of engagement to her teaching at Columbia. “Teaching art is not a straight line. You have to give of yourself and be sincere,” said Nisenbaum. “It’s mostly about the students. But they also want professional advice, and they ask questions about your own life as an artist and about how to belong to a meaningful community once they graduate.”

Eaton said, “All of our honorees have remained “Steadfast and Immovable” on their individual journey for justice and equality, contributing greatly as outstanding leaders in organizations, institutions and businesses.

2018 Honorees included Michael A. Hardy, Esq., Justice Robert R. Reed, John Chen, Rodney K. Williams, Dr. Shawn R. Outler and Wilma Jordan.

Report: College is Worth the Cost, But Planning is Key (Statepoint)

D

espite rising college costs, a clear majority of families believe higher education is well-worth the investment, and most students and parents are willing to stretch themselves financially to make it happen, according to a new study.

The national study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, “How America Values College 2018,” found that 66 percent of college-going families believe they are getting a good value for the price they’re paying for college, and 20 percent say college is worth every penny.

Even those willing to stretch financially are taking deliberate, resourceful

and concrete steps to make college more affordable.

Forty-five percent of college students are working year-round to earn money for school, and 37 percent of students live at home with parents or relatives to save on housing costs.

“Families resoundingly shared that college is worth the cost, and their resourcefulness made it more affordable,” says Raymond J. Quinlan, chairman and CEO, Sallie Mae Other ways students are saving on college costs?

Sixty-seven percent of students are cutting back their spending, and 24 percent are taking classes over a shorter period of time in order to graduate sooner and reduce costs.

While many families

are making such significant strides to prepare for college costs and save money, Quinlan points out that there’s still work to do when it comes to

equipping more families with tools and information needed to create a plan to pay for college.

Planning, and ultimately paying for college also

involves terms and jargon that may leave many scratching their heads.

Indeed, when asked a series of true or false questions about certain

paying-for-college terminology, lingering misconceptions persisted: 42 percent of families mistakenly believe work-study funds are automatic, more than 20 percent believe “free tuition” means college is free and 19 percent believe the sticker price is what college will cost them.

Ndaba Mandela shows solidarity with Harlem Community Garden

O

n September 8, Mandela Community Garden located at 265-269 W. 126th street received a visit from Ndaba Mandela, grandson of Anti-Apartheid Activist Nelson Mandela. Ndaba Mandela was showing his solidarity with the garden’s preservation.

Mandela Garden was a vacant lot for 30 years, before it was transformed through community efforts 4 years ago. Recently the city gave the garden an eviction notice, but garden supporters are challenging the city. Ndaba accepted an invitation to speak in support.

He started by sharing an African proverb, “A person becomes a person

because of others” speaking to the need for community spaces like the garden to promote relationship building. “I cannot be the person I am without my brothers and sisters, my neighbors,” he said.

Mandela’s current work is around an organization he founded called Africa Rising dedicated to serving the next generation through youth empowerment programs.

The audience cheered as Mandela recognized the youth present at the garden that day and the importance of bringing more youth-focused activities to the garden, like dance competitions: “We don’t have to be afraid of young people, we have to engage young people, we have to

attract young people. The youth are the only people who can guarantee tomorrow, and it is through love and unity.”

Love and Unity was the legacy of Nelson Mandela who as President worked towards uniting South Africa, a

country with past trauma of a government-sponsored segregation between blacks and whites.

July 18, 2018 marked 100

years since Nelson Mandela’s birth.

His grandson Ndaba connected this legacy to building relationships with the people, even those you consider your enemy. In Mandela Garden’s case it would be the city for evicting them. He used a Nelson Mandela quote to drive the point home: “In order to defeat your enemy, you must work with your enemy because then he becomes your partner and maybe even your friend.”

The Spiritual Science Movement

W

hile dusting off my book shelf I came across one of the first books that introduced me to the Spiritual Science Movement, the title of the book was; “The Master Key System” by Charles F. Haanel. Haanel was a visionary that was way ahead of his time. The Master Key System was first published in 1912.

The Theory that thought is spiritual, because thought is of the same energy as the Universal Mind, is an ancient one. The scientific

research that confirms this theory only became popular to the masses a few years ago.

The major focus of this century plus year old publication is that “the laws governing in the mental and spiritual world are as fixed and infallible as in the material world. The law of Abundance for example is due to an individual’s ability to manifest reality though thought.

According to Haanel “if you can acquire a thorough understanding of this law, and are able to control your thought processes, you can apply it to any condition.

The law of Abundance is the same as the law of Gravity, it will affect

you whether you believe it or not. You can never manifest abundance if your thoughts are mainly focused on the difficulties caused by the lack of abundance. Thought manifestation is an ability that we all have and use that is why it is important to monitor your thoughts. Never dwell on limitations, positive, creative and constructive thoughts will manifest positive creative and constructive realities.

In 2004 millions of individuals internationally became aware of the Spiritual Science Movement after the world wide success of the film “What the Bleep Do We Know”. This groundbreaking film provided scientific research

in quantum physics that supported Haanel’s early 1900’s writings. Around that same time I had not long completed my Korean Taoist Ki Energy master training. I was fascinated by the similarities in the theories of the spiritual science movement and ancient Taoist teachings.

Science has now proven that all things in our universe are made of vibrating energy including our thoughts. This supports the Taoist Yang/ Yin philosophy about all things in life. Energy is produced by the interface of negative and positive forces.

renamed Hermes developed the famous Seven Hermetic Laws. The third Hermetic law of vibration (see www.theartofwarogers.info) is the foundation of Taoism, Haanel’s work, and todays Spiritual Science Movement. In his book “Ancient Future” Wayne B. Chandler provides scholarly research to support this.

One might wonder why it has taken this long for this ancient wisdom that originated in ancient Egypt has taken so long to find its way to the masses.

According to Chandler it probably is the same reason why no current scientific research can explain how early Egyptians were able to align pyramid

stones within 1/1000 of an inch of mathematical perfection, a perspective achieved today only by jewelers cutting gems under a microscope.

When Science and ancient wisdom work as one, the concept of thought manifestation moves to another level of creativity.

If you are reading this article it is for a reason, some will realize that it is not new, I wrote it a few years ago. Perhaps like Haanel I was ahead of myself then, I believe that this is the time many should read research and understand this movement.

You don’t know where. You just have to go to another room, maybe, or another building, another town, across the world. You need to get out of here but, as in the new novel “Washington Black”

by Esi Edugyan, be careful, and mindful that you don’t run away from yourself.

Big Kit was going to kill him.

That, as George Washington Black understood, was her way of protecting him forever: she’d kill him and herself, sending them to a sort of heaven for slaves.

Wash was just a boy, maybe 10 or 11 years old, when she explained that no-more-options plan but she never followed through, perhaps because she was promised by a white man that mutilated corpses had no afterlife.

It was 1829 and from then forward, Wash avoided all white men at Faith Plantation, especially Erasmus Wilde, the new master whose cruelty knew no limits. Wilde was a man to steer clear of, but Wash couldn’t escape when he and Big Kit were summoned to the Plantation house one warm Barbadian evening.

Nothing good could come from it – but there did: that was the night when Christopher “Titch” Wilde, Erasmus’s brother, declared that Wash would be the right-sized assistant for his flying machine, which Titch was building at the edge of the plantation. He insisted that Wash come to live with him in the garden cottage and, without telling Erasmus, he insisted that Wash learn to read.

He gave Wash drawing materials, and encouraged his talents.

He listened to Titch’s stories and began to dream of impossible things. And when Wash was the unwilling witness to something horrible, he trusted his odd friend, and flew…

You may be scratching your head now about pre-Civil War years and flying machines. Yes, and it works. In “Washington Black,” it works phenomenally well.

That’s the biggest surprise: the H.G. Wells hint that’s here, and how much it doesn’t make this book into science fiction. Instead, “Washington Black” becomes an early Victorian adventure-drama told with the quiet, proper voice of the title character explaining how he got from a slave plantation in Barbados to Virginia to the Arctic and around the world.

That sounds farfetched, doesn’t it?

Until you read this book, it may seem so but Edugyan leaves enough room in this story to delight his readers, move them, and make everything fit just as they’d want it. There’s violence in here, yes, but there’s also a cliffhanger within, an enchanting romance, and a coming-of-age maturation you’ll be glad you’ve witnessed.
