Columbia University Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month scholarship and artistry span a wide range of forms, such as documentary film, essay, and poetry, with a focus on the Caribbean, the African diaspora, and Latinos in the United States. Negrón-Muntaner has also founded transformative programs and institutions, including the National Association of Latino Independent Producers, and the Latino Arts and Activism Collection at Columbia University’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library, which aims to preserve and make accessible materials about the Latino experience. A gifted, intuitive teacher, in 2012 Negrón-Muntaner received the Lenfest Award, one of Columbia’s most prestigious recognitions for excellence in teaching and scholarship. This fall, she will appear in front of the camera in Habla y Vota, a 12-part HBO documentary, discussing Latino contributions to the American political imagination.

T

he Trailblazer Award will be presented to City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, at a Town Hall with local elected officials to discuss issues affecting New York’s Latino population, Also, a wellness panel and health screening fair are among the many events for Medgar Evers College’s Latino Heritage Month, September 15-October 15, 2016.

Ms. Mark-Viverito, the first Latina to hold a citywide elected position, will receive her

award when Latino Heritage Month festivities kick off on September 15. Also beginning September 15 is a monthlong “Converging Visions” art exhibition featuring spoken word artist Noel Quiñones, in the College’s Charles Evans Inniss Memorial Library.

This year’s heritage month theme is “The State of Latino New York City 2016,” and it reflects the vibrancy of the community at the College and beyond. At Medgar Evers College, the Latino population

doubled between 2008 and 2011 and now stands slightly above 12 percent. The college supports the Association for Latin American Studies (ALAS), a club for Lati-

Citywide, Latinos number at least 2.3 million (according to the 2010 census) and constitute the city’s largest population group under the age of 25. Those numbers highlight the need for events that acknowledge the rich heritage of this growing demographic in educational institutions.

“This yearly cultural celebration affirms to our Latino students that they are an integral part of the Medgar Evers family,” said Rosalina Diaz, an associate professor of Education and the founder of ALAS. “Educational research on this population has shown that Latino students need to feel engaged and acknowledged in order for us to retain them.” Dr. Diaz, the coordinator and the chair of the Latino Heritage Month planning committee, is also the director of the College’s Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence.

major, spent 15 years as a community organizer on the Lower East Side and in East Harlem.

“We are the biggest growing voter bloc,” Mr. Seda said of the country’s Latino population.

“The club will be focusing on voter registration.

Medgar Evers, the civil rights leader for whom the college is named, made voting rights for blacks in the South a cornerstone of his work.

THE NNPA LAUNCHES HISTORIC BLACK VOTER TURNOUT PROJECT FOR 2016 ELECTION

he National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) proudly asserts that, “We are the authentic voice of Black America.” We must use that voice as an urgent clarion call for a massive, historic and unprecedented Black American voter turnout on November 8, 2016 across the nation.

Today, the NNPA is launching “Project Black Voter Turnout 2016: 20 Million Black Voters to the Polls.” We’re calling on our entire NNPA membership, comprised of more than 211 Black-owned media companies operating in the United States, to issue front-page news coverage and motivational editorials and to present banner ads on their publication websites, to promote effective Get-Out-TheVote (GOTV) campaigns in the Black community.

It is an undisputed fact that a record number of Black Americans (16,133,000) voted in 2008 and helped Barack H. Obama to become the first Black President of the United States. Then, in 2012, Black Americans broke their 2008 record for voter turnout, casting 17,813,000 votes. In 2012, for the first time in American

history, Black voter turnout (66.2 percent) at the national level exceeded White voter turnout (64.1 percent).

The United States of America is once again at a pivotal and crucial political crossroads. The outcome of the November 8th national elections will determine the future of the nation and of the world.

This is a propitious moment, not only for 47 million Black Americans, but this is also the time for all Americans to decide whether or not American democracy will finally fully embrace the goals of freedom, justice, equality and empowerment for all people.

Don’t let anybody attempt to suggest that your vote doesn’t count. Every vote counts. For some strange reason, there are several national pundits that are once again predicting a low voter turnout by Black America. These external pollsters and political observers really don’t know Black America.

This is one of the reasons why the NNPA and other Black-owned media companies are so strategically important. The NNPA not only knows the facts about Black America, the NNPA also reports and

defends the interests of Black America without apology or compromise of principle and integrity.

For nearly 190 years, the Black Press in America has been and continues to be the “trusted voice” of Black America. No political party should take the Black vote for granted.

Our votes have mattered and our votes will continue to matter. We will make the critical difference in the outcome of the upcoming national elections.

We have both a sacred obligation and a historic responsibility to ensure that we will have the largest Black American voter turnout in history.

Why? Because the overall quality of life of our families and communities is at stake.

Our energy, actions, and spirits must remain high and we have to fully engage the electoral process locally, regionally and nationally.

The NNPA’s “Project Black Voter Turnout 2016: 20 Million Black Voters to the Polls” will work in coalition with other national organizations: The Na-

tional Coalition on Black Civic Participation, NAACP, Rainbow Push, National Action Network, National Urban League, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Black Lives Matter, National Baptist Convention, Progressive National Baptist Convention, AME, AME Zion, COGIC, UCC, and the National Council of Churches.

“Project Black Voter Turnout 2016” will engage the Black community and all voters in print, online and through social media. Please join our efforts by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @BlackPressUSA, @NNPA_BlackPress and @NAACP and using the hashtags #BlackPressMatters and #BlackVotesMatter.

any low to moderate income individuals and families are considering becoming first time home buyers. This is a great time to buy a home. The interest rates are still low and the home values leveled off. The steps involved in the home buying process can be complicated and overwhelming. However for those who can endure to the completion will find the rewards are definitely worthwhile.

Here are a few advantages of owning your home that renting an apartment does not afford: (1) It provides an excellent opportunity to create intergenerational wealth for your family.

Investing in property has proven to be sound financial strategy.

Most properties in the Harlem

community have continued to rise in value, which will allow the homeowner to accumulate and leverage the equity created in the property. The equity simply is the difference between the purchased price of the home and it current value.

(2) Rather than paying a monthly rent to your landlord as a homeowner you are in essence paying yourself. If you have been living in your apartment for only 10 years and paying a monthly rent of $1,000, you have already paid your landlord $120,000 and got nothing in terms of an investment for your money! But as you pay off the outstanding loan amount, you are increasing the equity in the home. This will then increase your personal net worth. Also the real estate taxes

and the mortgage interest are tax deductible, which will allow you to save more on your income.

(3) Your monthly mortgage payment (principal and interest) will remain consistent. Most first time home buyers will obtain a 30-year fixed rate mortgage.

Naturally the insurance premiums and the taxes will increase as the property appreciates in value.

Usually with a rental lease agreement every time it is renewed you will experience an increase of 3-5%.

Tharpe was the queen of ‘race records’ in the 30’s and 40’s, a woman who played guitar as

passionately as Clapton, who performed mornings at churches and evenings at the Cotton Club, who was a big enough star to fill a baseball stadium for her third wedding, but ended up buried in an unmarked grave in Philadelphia. Marie and Rosetta chronicles Sister Rosetta’s first rehearsal with a young protégée, Marie Knight (Jones), as they prepare to embark on a tour that would establish them as one of the great duet teams in musical history.

The Classical Theatre of Harlem presents “Fit for a Queen”

T

he Classical Theatre of Harlem (Ty Jones, Producing Artistic Director; David Roberts, Managing Director) will present the world premiere of Fit for a Queen, a comedy inspired by the life of Hatshepsut, a woman who ruled as a pharaoh in ancient Egypt.

Hatshepsut’s female lover helps her usurp the throne, only to find herself at odds with an unexpectedly ruthless rival for power - her daughter.

Full of intrigue, farce, and sexual pol-

itics, Fit for a Queen illuminates the largely unknown history of a compelling Egyptian woman who took power over the ancient world’s most advanced civilization.

Far from the likes of her female successors Cleopatra and Elizabeth I, Hatshepsut ruled as a monarch in men’s clothing, demanding people refer to her as “pharaoh,” which is strictly a male title. She wielded her power through a persona of alpha-masculinity, which was tolerated only while she was

alive. The images and statues that portrayed Hatshepsut as a masculine pharaoh were defaced and destroyed during her son-in-law’s reign. Her enemies almost succeeded in erasing the legacy of a woman who ruled the superpower of the ancient world.

he NAACP’s Mid-Manhattan Branch celebrated its 50-year anniversary by honoring people who have shown their dedication to public health, the arts, diversity, education and justice at its Freedom Fund luncheon.

Several hundred people attended the advocacy organization’s annual fete Sept. 10 - which was hosted by NY1’s Cheryl Wills - inside the ballroom at Marina Del Rey in the Bronx, which honored L’Oréal executive vice president Frédéric Rozé with the Roy Wilkins Corporate Leadership Award for the company’s commitment to diversity. NAACP Mid-Manhattan president Geoffrey Eaton gave pioneering Broadway and TV actress, playwright and composer Micki Grant the Art and Cultural Award for her contributions to her craft.

Eaton also awarded Marci McCall, of the New York State Department of Health, and Sylvia White, the deputy executive director at NYC Health+Hospitals Harlem with the Outstanding Community Service Award and the Branch Service Award, respectively, for their unwavering commitment to public health.

“Being honored by the NAACP is not just a recognition of the work I have done,” White said, “it’s a recognition of the shoulders I am standing on. Those who went before me and strengthened and encouraged me. It’s because of the legacy of Dr. Hazel Dukes that we’ve been able to carry on the NAACP legacy of

“These honorees exemplify the goals of the NAACP,” President Eaton said, “and we’re honored to honor them.”

The event, chaired by Jean Dixon West and Claire Theobalds, brought out a who’s who of some of New York City’s power players, among them Rep. Charles Rangel, Assemblyman Keith Wright, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Councilwoman Inez Dickens.

Other notable attendees like State Senator Adriano Espillat, Dr. Hazel Dukes, president of the NAACP New York State Conference, Arva Rice, head of the New York Urban League, NYC Controller Scott Stringer and TV personality Dr. Jeff Gardere of Touro Department of Osteopathic Medicine were all on hand to lend their support.

Dr. Gardere told the Harlem News although some have questioned the need for advocacy groups like the NAACP, the group’s presence was needed now more than ever.

“The fact that in these days and times where we see see civil rights and human rights being challenged,” Dr. Gardere said, “and in this political climate, I think it shows why we have an NAACP.” Guests enjoyed networking during the cocktail reception, and enjoyed entrees like prime rib and shrimp scampi before taking home gift bags filled with products from sponsors L’Oréal and Colgate.

Harlem School of the Arts launches Fall 2016 Season with original student production All the News, September 23-25

T

he Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) will launch the Fall 2016 Season with its first original student theatre production, All The News, a dynamic fastpaced satire of contemporary news programs and infotainment. It is written by HSA Theatre Alliance students, directed

by HSA Artistic Director Alfred Preisser and Obie Award-winner and HSA Alumnus and Artist in Residence Chris Myers; and will include a guest appearance by HSA’s newest performance group, Legacy Arts Ensemble. The show will run from Friday, September 23, through Sunday,

September 25, 2016, at HSA’s Theater located at 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue, New York, New York 10030.

The HSA original production will employ sketches, jokes and spoken word to explore American culture and the 2016 Presidential Election via the nightly news, social media and music. All The News will also feature Legacy Arts Ensemble, HSA’s new performance group/class that employs West African dance, drumming, singing and storytelling principles to create original works with strong social justice themes.

• Reward desired behavior. Once clear expectations are given, it’s essential to reward the behavior that meets expectations. Rewards can be such things as verbal praise, a hug, a small present, a trip to the library or park, and even money.

• Administer clear, unemotional consequences for negative behavior. Be in control of your emotions, don’t nag or belittle the child, and use logical consequences. For example, if a child refuses to put away his or her toys, the toys could be taken away for a few days.

Having a good relationship with the child is perhaps the most important factor, Amen says.

“With a good parent-child relationship, almost any form of discipline will work,” he says.

“With a poor parent-child relationship, any form of discipline will probably fail. Relationships require two things: time and a willingness to listen.”

“The best way to do that is to deal with difficult behavior whenever it occurs and not allowing the tension to build up.

Retraining difficult behavior patterns is an essential part of the treatment for ADD.” Amen, author of “Healing ADD” and the New York Times bestseller “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life,” says there are steps parents can take that will help shape positive behavior in a child with ADD/ADHD and help the parent avoid those guilty feelings.

• Define the desired and undesirable behaviors. Before you can shape behavior, you need to be clear on what behaviors you want and don’t want, Amen says. A desirable behavior might be doing homework before going out to play. An undesirable behavior might be talking back to a parent.

• Establish how often negative or positive behavior occurs. Keep a log for anywhere from a week to a month to track how many times a behavior occurs.

Having a baseline will allow you to know whether your interventions are having an effect.

• Communicate rules and expectations clearly. When children know what is expected of them, they are much more likely to do it. Too often, Amen says, parents believe children should know how to act without the rules being clearly communicated.

he symptoms associated with attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder can put even the best parenting skills to the test.

Children and teenagers with ADHD don’t listen, or at least don’t seem to listen. They often fail to complete tasks, whether it’s a school assignment or a household chore. They can be impulsive, hitting a sibling or classmate when they feel frustrated, or failing to wait their turn when playing a game.

As a spotlight is put on the condition during October, which is ADHD Awareness Month, it’s worth noting that the disorder has an impact on the parents as well as the offspring.

Irritated by repeated undesirable behaviors, mothers and fathers may lash out, dealing more harshly with infractions than they should. Later, feeling guilty because of their overreaction, the parents may allow the child to get away with other misbehaviors.

Then tension builds again until once more the peeved parents explode and begin feeling guilty about their reactions all over again.

DNA, the Key to Life

I

n 1953 James Watson and Francis Crick announced their discovery of the genetic DNA code to the world. Wayne Chandler made note in the book “African Presence in Early Asia” (by Runoko Rashidi and Ivan Van Sertima) that the sixty-four binary triplet hexagrams in the Taoist classic book of change known as the I Ching, corresponds directly to the sixty-four binary triplet figures called DNA codons discovered by Watson and Crick.

It seems that while modern-day science is just discovering the secrets to the key to life, research is

showing that ancient Taoist wisdom addressed answers to questions we are still asking today, questions such as “Who are we?” and “What is our purpose in life?” In 2000 J. Craig Ventor and Francis Collins announced the sequence of the entire human genome. Their project, known as the Human Genome Project, created data files of twenty to twenty-five thousand genes in human DNA, and the three billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA. In 2003, science finished mapping the sequence of the human DNA. This has allowed for advances in health research and also police and legal work. Ancient Taoist

believed that our genes can be altered by our emotions and experiences. Margret Ruby supports this ancient theory in her book “DNA of Healing”. Ruby writes about ways to program your DNA for health, wealth and positive relationships.

Dr. Peter D’Adamo writes in his international bestselling book “Eat Right for Your Type”, that “a single drop of blood contains the entire genetic code of a human being. This DNA blueprint contains eons of genetic memory passed on from our ancestors”. ust a few blocks downtown, folks are making decisions (again) about something we take for granted, something we need and must have to be accepted as fully functioning members of society each day. I’m going to give you a few hints, so see if you can guess . . .

Membership is restricted and entrée into their world is by invitation only. They are coming from all over the world, as members of an aristocracy of sorts. They convene twice a year in ex-

clusive groups to see and be seen, and to support one another’s initiatives. They are judge and jury. Their power is immeasurable, but they are harmless. They are feared.

They are loved. They believe that they know you and what you want them to do for you…but they never ask your opinion. And in the end, you take what they give you.

Do you know who they are?

If you guessed the captains of the fashion industry, arbiters of style or fashion mavens, then you are right!

And they decide what is going to be in style! Yep, Fashion Week is in full swing. Thousands of retailers, fashion journalists and celebrities from all over the world are gathering to view the collections. Designers big and small have put all of

their creative efforts, energy and thousands of dollars into designing a collection and producing a show to garner the favor of a very fickle and jaded audience. But this is The Big Time! Their efforts culminate in a 20-minute show for the aristocracy; and those few precious minutes could mean the difference between success and failure.

The goal is to gain admittance to the club, attain celebrity status or at the very least be granted the title of, “The New Visionary” or “Someone to Watch.” Yes, there will be winners and losers but what about us?

After the movers and shakers see the shows they will return to their respective kingdoms to determine what you and I will wear in the spring of 2017. It’s a lit-

tle scary really. What if we don’t like their choices? Do they know that we don’t like stripes or that we are moving towards orange as “The New Black”? How do they manage to make those choices without consulting us?

Do they have any idea how many times we have tried to shop for something special and come up empty handed because we couldn’t find anything? Mind you, the stores were full of things to buy. Our problem: the color isn’t right, it was too short or made in the wrong fabric and on top of it all; it was cut to fit a worm’s body.

The bottom line, it wasn’t fitting us or our lifestyle! So, you ask, what to do? How can you have an impact on what is chosen by retailers?

I can only think of one way,

But alas, the sad truth is that they aren’t even thinking about us, but that shouldn’t stop us from thinking about them! If you don’t see what you are looking for in the spring—you’ll know why. If you miss this chance to mind meld with the designers you will have another opportunity to in the spring of 2017, that’s when the aristocracy

meets again to choose what we will be wearing in the fall of 2017. Think about it. See you next week.

ifteen years later the memories of September 11th remain with us. Many of our friends and relatives were lost, or we know someone who lost someone, on that tragic day.

We remain supportive and prayerful with them.

The world remembered the “Dust Lady”.

This sister was featured on film around the world.

She was covered in World Trade Tower debris and dust. She died recently at the young age of 42.

She died as a result of her exposure to known carcinogens in the dust and debris of the World Trade Center. We pray for her

family!

Rev. Lee Crawford, Pastor of Day Spring Baptist Church, Harlem, electrified the congregation Sunday as he told his September 11th testimony. Rev. Crawford, as a member of the NYPD, was assigned to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. It was there that a true test of faith and dependence on God, got him, the families and his co-workers through this tragic event.

Franklin Avenue Baptist Church’s Pastor Aide Ministry celebrated their anniversary last Sunday afternoon. Pastor Aide Ministry folks from across

the city were there. The food was, as always, delicious! Rev. Idus Nunn, Jr. did a wonderful job. Rev. Helena Tyson was the morning preacher.

“Darktown: A Novel” REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

S

omeone always has to be first.

That can be a good thing, or a bad one. Good, if it’s a cafeteria, supermarket queue, electronics store, or conga line; better, if free samples are involved. Bad, in experiments, taste-testing, first-on-last-off and, as in the new novel “Darktown” by Thomas Mullen, first in a dangerous new job.

The girl was green when they finally found her.

Officers Lucius Boggs and Tommy Smith smelled her long before that, long before they found her covered in garbage in a vacant lot, dead just a few days. They immediately recognized her as the woman they’d seen

with former police officer Brian Underhill, until she ran from them.

She’d been pretty once; young and light-skinned and there was the problem: it was just after World War II, the mayor had recently forced the Atlanta Police Department to hire new policemen from the segregated parts of town, and racial lines were

drawn thick. Few in charge cared about the death of some Negro woman; that the policemen who found her were black, too, only added to the apathy.

Rookie Officer Denny Rakestraw had no issue with Negroes in general, or with those now in the APD, but his partner, Lionel Dunlow sure did.

by Thomas Mullen Dunlow was as racist as they come, and Rake figured that having to patrol the edge of Darktown only boosted Dunlow’s fury. Rake noticed that Dunlow, in fact, seemed to take pleasure in torturing any Negro they saw on the streets, including those who were only minding their own business.

As a rookie, Rake didn’t think it wise to make enemies but he hated seeing that, just as he hated that Underhill seemed to be getting away with murder and Dunlow was covering for him. So when Rake learned that Boggs had decided on his own to solve the Negro woman’s death, he offered Boggs a deal: they’d quietly investigate what they could in their respective racially-divided departments, and share their information.

It would be dangerous.

Shedding light on a Darktown murder could end more than just their careers…

Reading “Darktown” was a brand-new experience for me: I wanted to wash my hands, my arms, and my hair to get rid of the grit that pours out of this story. I could smell dirt and thick air and rotting wood. I squirmed, before I dived in for more.

It was impossible not to, because this novel is noir all the way: author Thomas Mullen sets a tone of a rainy midnight even in his daytime scenes, while the timeframe of the story, mixed with an angry-yet-resigned neighborhood of beat-down residents, just lends to the deliciously keen edginess. As for the main characters, the both-sides-of-the-same-coin frustration they feel simmers throughout each page. You may begin to wonder if either

man makes it to the end of this novel.

I’m not about to be a spoiler – you’ll have to find that out yourself. But know this: if you want a sandpaper read that’s sticky as cold fog, “Darktown” is what to reach for first.

The event was hosted by hip hop artist Jin and Hot 97 radio personality Laura Stylez and opened with a performance by Kozmic Edge, a mostly female dance group, followed by a performance by Jin with Kozmic Edge providing background dancing.

Though it was a competitive battle, there could only be one winner. The last team standing was Last Samurai, who were crowned 2016 McDonald’s B-Boy Royale Grand Champions. The three-person team features Brooklyn’s Thias ‘Thesis’ Lopez, 24, Boston’s Alex Diaz ‘El Niño’, 25, and Minnesota’s Joseph ‘MN Joe’ Tran, 27, who defeated Beast

Coast in the finals, winning $5,000, bragging rights and an invitation to defend their title at B-Boy Royale 4.

“Even though all three members are from different cities and backgrounds, we celebrate our experiences and each other through dance,” said Last Samurai’s Thias ‘Thesis’ Lopez.

“The chemistry and vibes Joe, Niño and I shared on stage definitely pushed us through for tonight’s win.”

Harlem News spoke exclusively with Christopher Perry, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities®(RMHC) New York Tri-State Area, about how the organization became involved with the event, its evolution, and other events it produces.

“Ronald McDonald House Charities® New York Tri-State Area was selected as the charitable beneficiary of this event, which was produced by the McDonald’s New York Tristate Owner/ Operators. RMHC has been the charitable beneficiary of

this event for the past three years since its inception,” Perry said. The success of the event has allowed it to become bigger, with the third edition being the largest. “Every year, more and more people are attending and supporting the event.

Success breeds success, and the increasing popularity of the event from one year to the next has resulted in higher and higher attendance each year. Also, the selection of breakdancing celebrities such as Richard “Crazy Legs” Colon in 2015 and Michael “Boogaloo Shrimp” Chambers this year as Lifetime Achievement Honorees certainly brought more attention to the event.”

This week I’ll share a deliciously simple snack solution for eating healthier on the go as you transition your nutrition and get a jump on your New Year’s Resolutions for better health in the coming year.

Colonrectal.org reports that rural Africans, whose diets are rich in fiber, suffer less from digestive tract diseases than Americans do, which is thought to be partially related to the high fiber content in their diet. Most Americans eat 10 to 15 grams of fiber a day, whereas 25 to 35 grams are recommended.

This fall, think fiber! Fiber comes in two forms: soluble

and insoluble. The role of insoluble fiber is to move bulk through the intestines and control pH or acidity in intestines.

For example, foods like wheat bran, most beans, flaxseeds and starchy vegetables contain this type of fiber. Soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol and regulate blood sugar because it “prolongs stomach emptying time so that sugar is released and absorbed more slowly” [G.Tsang, RD, HealthCastle.com, Jan. 29, 2013].

Sure there’s Metamucil, but by far the best ways to get fiber is to turn to the whole foods found in Mother Nature. Sweet potato, figs, flaxseed, and fruit with skin like apricots, prunes, apples and one of my personal favorites, pears, are the best sources of soluble fiber.

All I know is that I love the fleshy skin of pears, the tart aroma and the meaty juiciness of its bite. Pears actually contain more fiber and potassium than most fruits including apples (about

STATEMENT FROM BOROUGH PRESIDENT DIAZ RE: The 15th Anniversary of 9/11

B

ronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. issued the following statement in recognition of the 15th anniversary of 9/11: “Today is the 15th anniversary of perhaps the greatest tragedy to affect our city and our nation: the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center of September 11, 2001.

“On this day our nation was brutally attacked in the name of misguided hate, causing the deaths of

nearly 3,000 people.

My own borough lost 144 individuals in this tragedy, and people of The Bronx offer their special prayers to their neighbors who perished 15 years ago today.

“We must also remember those who responded so quickly without thoughts for their own safety, our first responders of the New York Police Department, the Fire Department of New York and others. They came without reservation,

without hesitation, focused solely on those who needed rescue that day.

“On this solemn occasion, I join together with all the families of the victims to mourn their loss with a broken heart and offer comfort to my brothers and sisters in this time of need. Today, on this day of remembrance, prayer and healing, I offer my thoughts and prayers, and those of the entire Bronx, to the victims of this tragedy, their families

and their friends. I wish them peace and pray for their comfort on this difficult day,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. On Wednesday, September 14, Borough President Diaz and the Supreme Court of Bronx County will cohosted the borough’s annual “Day of Remembrance” to commemorate the families, friends and neighbors who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

PIONEER WORKS HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL RED HOOK REGATTA P ioneer Works will present the second annual Red Hook Regatta on Sunday, September 25, 2016. During the event, hundreds of spectators will gather on Valentino Pier to watch as 3D printed boats navigate the rough seas of New York City’s shipping harbor. The Red Hook Regatta connects the community’s rich history as a shipping port to new technologies such as 3D printing and modeling, electronic circuitry, and game design.

At its core, the Red Hook Regatta embodies a form of storytelling and media

production that connects a community to its history, environment, and culture as well as the current-day issues that it faces. The Red Hook Regatta is an initiative within Pioneer Works Civic Journalism

program and is presented in collaboration with the Red Hook Initiative, a local community-based program that supports local youth with educational and enrichment opportunities.

The main event fea-

tures radio-controlled boats designed and built by members of the Red Hook Initiative’s Digital Stewards. Teams will compete to transport “cargo” from “Stevedores” on the beach to designated “crane operators,” who will be receiving the cargo on the pier using fishing rods equipped with red magnetic hooks. In the hours before the race, Pioneer Works will host fun activities for all ages, including carnival games and music on the main stage. Kids can participate by building, decorating and racing their own paper boats in our Children’s

Wind-Powered Boat Race.

This event is free and open to the public and brings together participants and spectators from Red Hook and beyond to take part in these DIY boat races.

The floor plan is open and flexible, encouraging a transparent, collaborative environment where international artists, musicians, scientists and educators can co-exist and create together. Through a broad range of educational programs, performances, arts and science residencies, and exhibitions, Pioneer Works seeks to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, foster community and provide a space where alternative modes of thought are supported and activated in tangible ways.

Rochdale to Rio: Dalilah Muhammad Brings Home the Gold,

for Dalilah. The choice of Cardozo for her high school allowed Dalilah to continue in her current program. Cardozo Coach Emmanuel and Coach Taylor would coordinate her participation during the school year enabling Dalilah to benefit from both high school and club events. Training through the heat of the summer, rain storms and frigid winter temperatures was the norm for Dalilah and the rest of her teammates.

Coach Taylor saw something in the skinny, hardworking and competitive young girl and developed a long term plan to keep her motivated and working towards her long term goals. “At a young age we never spoke about the Olympics being a realistic goal, but as she met every challenge placed in front of her it was evident that Dalilah had no limits,” states Taylor.

Dalilah’s high school career included all-time top PSAL performances, state championships in the high jump and hurdles and much more. Her gold medal performance at the word junior IAAF championship in Czechoslovakia in 2006 was just a taste of what was to come.

Her victory in the 400 intermediate hurdles at the international competition showed what a big time performer she was.

She would sign with University of Southern California and begin her collegiate Trojan career in 2008. As a top 5 recruit in the nation, Dalilah had a choice of almost any university in the country. The combination of a top scholar, athlete and great personality made it possible for her to take her time in the recruiting process before making her choice.

“We still struggle to raise enough funds for all of our national qualifiers to travel each year,” states Coach Taylor, “The national competitions rotate across the country every year.

Last year we were able to travel because it was held in Virginia, however when nationals requires plane travel it presents a financial challenge for the team.”

Hopefully, now that NOVAS Track Team has trained Dalilah Muhammad, an Olympic Gold Medalist, some things will change for the club who has struggled for the past 20 years.

ver 200 excited children and community members gathered at Rochdale Village Community Center’s Grand Ballroom to cheer on their hometown hero Dalilah Muhammad!

Dreams do come true with hard work, commitment and focus on your craft, Dalilah Muhammad is a testament to that because she followed her dreams to greatness, winning an Olympic Gold Medal in Rio. Dalilah Muhammad was raised in Jamaica Queens and is the first ever American to win a Gold Medal in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles. Setting a fast pace and daring anyone to catch her, she would lead from start to finish to the delight of the crowd.

Dalilah Muhammad began her illustrious track and field career as a seven year old in Rochdale Village in Queens New York. The NOVAS Track Club was founded in 1988

by Coach George Taylor and has become a successful nationally ranked team. Muhammad trained, ran and won with NOVAS Track Team for nine years. Dalilah learned the art of running, hurdling and high jumping in the halls of the Rochdale Village Community Center.
