Our prayer go out to all those affected by the recent Hurricanes and bad weather in Texas, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. I was suppose to have met my family in Orlando this past weekend from September 7-11 in Orlando Florida.

My family was looking forward to celebrating me being “cancer-free” and my birthday which was September 8th. By September 6th it was clear to all of us that our plans had to change. I canceled my travel plans and Jet Blue did give me a complete refund right away. My Miami family continued to Orlando to the houses we were renting which turned out to be a good idea for them since they had to evacuate Miami anyway.

My family from Savannah ,which is where I was born, went to Atlanta because they also got an evacuation warning. Therefore we had two family reunions this weekend - one in Orlando and one in Atlanta . I could not make either, however they are all safe. God is Good.

Again, thank you to all who supported me through my cancer treatment with your prayers, cards and contributions

or two days before the start of this year’s school year the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association (“COBA”) sponsored free haircuts for kids age 4 to 18 years old at a barbershop in the Bronx and Brooklyn, “King of Knockout” Javier’s Barbershop located at 1189 Castle Hill Avenue, Bronx, NY 10473 and Los Flacos Barbershop located at 534 Wilson Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11207.

COBA President Elias Hussamudeen remembers his childhood experience of growing up one of five sons in a single parent home and how expensive getting haircuts at the start of the school year was for

his mother. “Our association has always performed acts of kindness like this, it’s only recently that we have begun to publicize it.

I know my Mom would have appreciated it if someone would have cut me and my brothers heads for free,” President Hussamudeen stated. This year 623 haircuts were given courtesy of their ongoing “We’re More Than Just Jails” campaign.

Is this America? Kharon Davis, Held for 10 Years in a Jail Cell without a Trial

“In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed...” - US Constitution 1789 (rev. 1992) nlike either the First Amendment that protects our right to free speech or the Second Amendment, which protects the right to bear arms, the Sixth Amendment rarely, if ever, garners the national spotlight relative to its value to people of color or our democracy.

While our Constitution guarantees the right to a “speedy and public trial,” Kharon Torchee Davis-imprisoned in Dothan, Alabama, has yet to experience neither a trial nor an opportunity for bail. Tears building in her eyes, his mother Chrycynthia Davis asks unabashedly “Is this America?”

Her tears are more normal than rare in parts of the South, where local law and customs built on centuries of racism and the clandestine yet invisible chains used by racists to undermine the equal application of law.

America, with over two million people locked up in a variety of ways, remains the world’s leading prison nation. On any given day, nearly half a million are being held in limbo - in pretrial detention where they are neither guilty or innocent, simply held without a trial due to court inefficiencies, inability to pay bail or times as a strategy to affect their eventual trial.

up, nearly three-fourths are held in state and local jails and 60 percent have not been convicted of anything. How the world’s greatest democracy exists as the world’s greatest prison nation, remains an enigma wrapped within a quandary. According to a story in the New York Times, “in each year, city and county jails across the country admit between 11 million and 13 million.”

The supporters of Kharon Davis are hopeful that after a decade of being incarcerated without a trial, he’ll finally receive a fair trial sometime in mid-September.

Accused of capital murder - a crime which he vehemently claims innocence – Davis, like many individuals held for years without a trial, waits for the simple opportunity to exercise the rights guaranteed him by our nation’s constitution.

For 23 hours a day he is held in solitary confinement at the Houston County Jail in Dothan, Alabama. His own mother has been banned from visiting him. Not a day passes by where he is not mentally tortured and forced to live in conditions that are unthinkably horrific. The intimidation tactics go as far as this: Davis was forced to move to the cell where Martez Dozier was hanged on Halloween 2015 the placement happened just one day after Dozier’s death.

After the NAACP intervened and tried to facilitate a meeting between him and his mother, Davis was punished and told that the NAACP did not run the jail.

Prosecutors want him to succumb to a plea bargain, therefore, the system has turned a blind eye to the cruelty and terrorization he is forced to endure.

Conflicts of interest from both the arresting officer and Davis’ former attor-

ney coupled with failed attempts to gather evidence are cited as reasons why Davis’ chances at a fair trial have been stalled for so long. However, those familiar with the case know that the Dothan Police Department and the Houston County criminal justice system are both notorious for their blatant disregard of human and civil rights.

It is widely known in the area, both by victims and by the officials themselves that the constitution does not apply in Dothan.

Studies consistently find that African American and Hispanic defendants are more than twice as likely to be detained in jail pending trial. In fact, African-American defendants are 66 percent more likely to be detained before trial and Latino defendants are 91 percent more likely to be detained before a trial, in comparison to white defendants. Research indicates that pretrial detention significantly increases the likelihood that a defendant will be found guilty when tried and sentenced for longer periods of time.

Davis’ case has stark similarities with that of Kalief Browder, whose tragic story played out on the small screen in the six-part documentary TIME: The Kalief Browder Story. Browder, who was imprisoned at the age of 16 for stealing a book bag, spent three years on Riker’s Island - one of the most violent prisons in the country - before being released when his case was eventually thrown out.

Riker’s Island itself has 7,500 people detained at the prison, 80% of whom have not been found guilty or innocent of the charges they face.

Browder spent 800 days in solitary confinement, and was often urged by the prison guards to commit suicide. In June 2015, two years after his release from jail,

Browder hung himself with an air conditioning cord.

Jay Z, collaborator, and co-producer of the documentary, referred to Browder as “a modern-day poet; his story a failure of the judicial process.”

This August, we witnessed yet another on-screen adaptation of our broken criminal justice system in the feature length movie, Crown Heights. The film tells the story of Trinidadian immigrant, Colin Warner, who served 21 years in jail (four of which were in solitary confinement) for the murder of a teenage boy - a person he’d never even met. Sentenced to a maximum-security prison for a minimum of 15 years, together he and his childhood friend studied the law and made several failed attempts to appeal the case until they finally succeed in exonerating Warner.

But must it take the showmanship of Hollywood to draw attention to the defunct legal system that is decimating the futures of our black and brown communities?

How many more on-screen adaptations will it take for us to say enough is enough?

We can no longer wait for our men of color to turn into hashtags or movie before we start to speak up.

The NAACP is not here to determine guilt or innocence, but is committed to ensuring that Kharon Davis receives a fair trial by a jury of his peers. This case is merely the tip of the iceberg of injustices that disproportionately impact people of color in Alabama and the nation. We say stay woke, pay attention, and take action.

re there any good home buying deals left to be found in the city? This question continues to be asked by many prospective first-time buyers. The answer, although apparently obvious, is still not necessarily completely clear. Yes, it is becoming more difficult to find a great deal. This is a seller’s market, meaning the demand for homes are far greater than the available supply. Many homes are not staying on the market long enough for the seller to come down on the asking price.

For first time home buyers, here are some tips you must implement into your strategy to become successful.

(1) Remain patient. Patience in the home buying are-

You want to be ready to make a competitive offer whenever that great deal comes your way. You do not want to miss it for any reason.

Great deals still happen but not every day. Maintain your focus on becoming a homeowner.

TARAJI P. HENSON: FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT FOR WHAT IS RIGHT

A

ctress Taraji P. Henson has never shied away from a worthy cause, and she has always been ready to fight for what she believes is right. Not only has that worked out well for her, but it is also paying off for those living with HIV/AIDS. Vocal on such varied topics as equal pay for women, police brutality and animal cruelty, the critically acclaimed actress is also lending her voice and her star power to efforts to raise awareness about HIV and to help those affected by it.

Best known for the largerthan-life character of Cookie Lyon that she plays on the Fox television series “Empire,” Henson strikes just as powerful a figure when she is offscreen. Like Cookie, Henson is passionate about what she believes in. This year she

proudly unveiled her line of fuchsia lipsticks as part of cosmetic giant MAC’s Viva Glam campaign, which has raised money for HIV/AIDS awareness since 1994. One hundred percent of the proceeds from Henson’s line of lipsticks will go to the cause. “The best part of the Viva Glam campaign for me is that all the money helps someone who’s living with HIV and AIDS have a better life,” Henson says.

Henson has also been vocal about homophobia in the Black community, which contributes to stigma and is a major deterrent to HIV testing and treatment. When “Empire” received criticism for daring to showcase a gay character, Jamal Lyon, played by Jussie Smollett, in one of the lead roles, Henson came to the show’s defense. She told “People”

magazine: “People are dealing with this, it’s not a joke; that’s why it’s in the script. It’s not for show, it’s not for sensationalism. It’s because people are struggling with this. And that’s why we shed light on it. You can’t make everybody happy; we don’t try to. We just try to touch and affect lives, and I think we have. We’re always going to have haters, so here’s to all my haters! I’ll send you cookies, thanks.”

Shrugging off haters is nothing new for Henson.

When she became pregnant in college at Howard University, people told her she wouldn’t graduate, but she proved them wrong and walked across the

stage to collect her diploma with her son on her hip.

Later, when she moved to California at the age of 26 as a single mom with $700 in her pocket, people told her she couldn’t succeed as an actress, because she was too old. Luckily, she tuned them out. “If you listen to people and you let people project their fears onto you, you won’t live,” she says.

It’s that take-no-prisoners attitude that fueled Henson’s success when she left behind her native Washington, D.C., to become one of the most celebrated actresses in Hollywood. She’s received a Golden Globe Award and three BET Awards for best actress for her work on “Empire.” She also received an NAACP Image Award for outstanding actress for her portrayal of mathematician Katherine Johnson in the film “Hidden Figures.” Other

As impressive as she is in her field, Henson is just as respected for the moves she is making when she is not on camera. In 2016 Henson was named one of the most influential people in the world

by Time magazine. Empire co-creator Lee Daniels has called her “the modern-day Bette Davis, touching audiences with her honesty and intensity.” She is also the author of an autobiography, “Around the Way Girl,” in which she details how she has managed to stay true to herself throughout her rise in Hollywood.

Henson’s collaboration with MAC for the Viva Glam campaign is not the first time she has lent her voice to the fight against HIV/AIDS. In

2015, she became an ambassador for Alicia Keys’ charity Keep a Child Alive, which also raises awareness about HIV. In an interview with Black Entertainment Television, Henson explained why she feels so compelled to lend her star power to educating the Black community about HIV/AIDS. “So many people believe that HIV/ AIDS is no longer because of the amazing medications and advancements in preventing and treating the disease,” she told BET. “But I want people to know that we cannot become complacent or have a lazy attitude because it’s still affecting people today—especially African Americans.”

Kindergarten Parents: How to Reinforce Learning at Home (Statepoint)

indergarten is an exciting time for children, but it can also be stressful -- not just for little ones, but for parents, too. Although each child is unique and develops at his or her own pace, most educators and experts agree that four key areas of development are essential for further growth and achievement in school.

To help your child throughout the kindergarten year, here are a few ways to support these key areas of development at home: • Vocabulary and Oral Language Development: Encourage your child to communicate through words. Have your child tell you a story, asking questions that invite description.

For example, if your child

says a dog was chasing a stick, ask what color was the dog? Did he run fast or slowly? Was the stick big or small? In public, give your child opportunities to speak for him or herself or make requests. If he or she is asked what they want to eat and drink at a restaurant, let your child reply, even if you know the answer.

• Social-Emotional Skills: Children will use social-emotional skills every day once in kindergarten, whether they’re asking a teacher for help, being polite to classmates or following instructions. Scheduling a fun, unstructured play date is a great way to let children interact with peers, helping them learn to share and express themselves through play.

• Small Motor Control: Developing small motor

he spiritual science movement has created interesting partnerships between today’s scientific community and ancient wisdom adherents that’s centered on the concept of the manifestation of power of thought. There is now a collective agreement that our thoughts control and influence our reality. We have the power to change our reality with our thoughts yet many of us lack the faith to effectively use this ability. All too often, our ability to create the existence that we want escapes us because

we tend to place more focus on what we don’t want, or have.

If I asked you to raise your right arm, or take five steps forward, it would not be difficult to do. The main reason is because you believe that you can.

There are many people who do not believe that have the ability raise their arm or walk and thus they cannot. This could be due to an accident, a health or mental issue. Physical therapy can be used to help restore those abilities. In line with that same principle, a form of mental therapy can be used to restore one’s positive thought manifestation ability.

Positive thought manifestation is the ability to create exactly what we want our physical and mental reality to be. If you are not getting what you want out of life, you might need a

form of spiritual therapy to help restore your ability to positively shape the universal energy that will allow you to achieve your goals. Negative thought manifestation will attract physical and mental energy that will prevent you from creating the life you want.

Spiritual therapy should not be confused with religion. It is based more on the scientific and spiritual concepts which maintain that energy is the connecting force to all things. There is a force that is a part of everything in our universe. Faith will allow you to tap into that force and use it to attract all that is necessary to positively affect your mental and physical reality.

Unconditional love is an important factor that is necessary for tapping into the positive energy force of thought manifestation. You must first love and accept yourself for who you are, and who you are not. The

difficult part is learning to love others as you love yourself. You must accept the fact that true and lasting happiness cannot be obtained externally – it has to be developed internally. It is necessary to embrace the concept of doing for others as you would for yourself.

Understanding and practicing these things will infuse you with the courage and motivation to continue using your positive thought manifestation ability to create the life that you want. You most forge the faith not to give up; this will allow you to understand that

all things will happen at the time that they are supposed to happen.

ear Alma, I really enjoy your column and I could really use some advice. I’ll try to keep this short. I had a long-term relationship and we broke up and he moved to a new state. After three year,s we started talking again on Facebook and then one thing led to another and we got back together. We were still having problems and we broke up again. Within

a year he married someone else. I was heartbroken and couldn’t believe he married somebody else after all that we had. Fast forward, it’s been five years and I have not been in another relationship like the one we had. He and I started talking again, we met up and everything fell back into place. Instead of leaving his wife and kids he decided we all should be together and his wife agreed. Things have been cool for the last 8 months.

I recently found out I was pregnant and I’m so happy and so is he. She, on the other hand, seems to be treating me differently.

We are not jelling the way we were and I don’t understand. I was thinking maybe

In my book, that makes this something else.

Your threesome has just become one too many, so I’d suggest you sleep with one eye open. If Mrs. #1, (um, that’s right) isn’t as happy as you are about the pregnancy, clearly, she will soon bring this train ride to an end. The question is, will she ask you to transfer or make it your

last stop. Then again, if she decides to disembark, hold off on your happy dance, ‘cause, to be truthful, you’ll never be enough woman for that man. He is using you and he is using her. One or both of you need to be sick and tired of being sick and tired— and shared.

My advice, move out of her house to your own place and make your baby a priority. There are no if, ands or buts about it. Sometimes it’s difficult to love ourselves the way we ought but mothers can love their children better than they love themselves, you’ll see.

That, my dear, needs to become your new problem. As a matter of fact, you and I

need a telephone call, email me your number.

Meanwhile, I hope you realize you’re sleeping with the frenemy and you don’t even know it. Recognize and identify your worth, grab ahold of it. Your sweet new baby needs you to “woman up.” Kick that brainwashing, cheating, deceiving holder of your heart to the curb. He’s used up enough of your time.

As a matter of fact, the exercises weaved themselves in as part of my daily routine which contributed towards a healthier lifestyle I was steadily developing where nutrition and fitness habits interact harmoniously on a daily basis to sustain strength, energy and overall sense of wellness.

Essentially I was taking the time first thing in the morning before my feet hit the floor; to communicate with God, reinforcing the connection between body, mind and spirit. I did this by combining the use of my own body weight strength and with stretches and other flexibility exercises along with motivational affirmations that lasted for at least 10 minutes. Sometimes as much as 30 minutes or more. Gradually I incorporated facial toning exercises (which works better than Botox!) and a “cool down meditation” at the end of the routine where I recited affirmations or biblical scriptures which really helped to fo-

cus my mind and ease any muscle tension, or anxiety furtively lurking within my psyche.
