GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE! Over 7,000 runners and walkers participated in the Percy Sutton Walk/Run this past weekend. I joined the walkers as part of the Harlem Tourism Board group. After the walk we joined the dance party in the streets. It was a fun day for all those who participated, as well as the spectators. (see page 16-17) Jennifer Holliday will join the “Color Purple” in October playing the role of Shug Avery. I have seen the show a couple of times and I definitely will say it is a “must see.”

Hillary Clinton is of course not the first woman to run for president in the United States, but she is the first to win the nomination of the Democratic party. Before Hillary there was Shirley Chisholm and others. (see page 11).

Since then, Jim Watts has been awarded over $700,000 in City contracts, resulting in a steady stream of revenue, national recognition and generational wealth in his family.

A once in a blue moon story? Not at the Department of Small

Business Services (SBS), where Jim is one of many entrepreneurs whose business scaled new heights after becoming certified as a minority or woman owned-business enterprise (M/WBE) with the City.

Now is the best time to run a business in New York City, especially for minority or women business owners. The Mayor has recognized that a strong pipeline of diverse businesses supporting the work

of government builds a stronger City – and committed to awarding $16 billion in contracts to M/WBEs by 2025. The City is well on its way to achieving this goal.

This year, SBS certified an all-time record of 4,516 M/WBEs that are now eligible to compete for contracts - and the City has awarded over $3.3 billion to M/WBEs in the last two years.

There are more good reasons to start a business now. For the first

time, there is a coordinated effort across City agencies to help small business owners by cutting government red tape and streamlining the process of opening a business. The “Small Business First” plan, unveiled by the de Blasio administration in 2015, was developed to make entrepreneurs a priority and move government out of the way. As a result, SBS is helping businesses open 2.5 months faster. And there are new business-friendly policies at the Department

of Consumer Affairs, where fines against small businesses have dropped by 50%. Part of the reason for this success is that the City is opening the door to foreign born New Yorkers, who represent nearly half of its 220,000 small businesses. The Immigrant Business Initiative, created with the support of Citi Community Development, is working with local partners to provide one-on-one counseling and outreach in six different languages - Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Haitian Creole, and Bengali.

Jim Watts was able to take advantage of contract opportunities

with the City because he certified as a M/ WBE – one of many free services offered at the seven Business Solutions Centers operated by SBS throughout all five boroughsincluding the Upper Manhattan Center at 361 125th Street. Entrepreneurs can visit these centers to take business courses, connect to responsible lenders, receive free legal help and even recruitment services to build up their teams.

Government has finally figured it out – nurture the City’s talent and solve its business problems. This is what creating economic equality looks like.

Helene Fuld College of Nursing Ranked the No. #1 Community College in the Nation I n August, Helene Fuld College of Nursing (HFCN), located at 24 East 120th Street New York, was ranked the number one community college in the nation by the personal finance website, WalletHub. The College out-performed 821 other institutions to secure the coveted top position. Metrics used to perform the analysis included cost and financing, education outcomes, and career outcomes.

registered nurses to earn Bachelor of Science degrees. Located in the Harlem community of New York City, the 450-member student body is 95 percent minority. The College’s size has not detracted from its ability to compete with many other colleges and universities in the country.

Helene Fuld College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and both nursing programs

are nationally accredited.

WE MUST SUPPORT THE FREEDOM-FIGHTING LEGACY OF GEORGE E. CURRY IN THE BLACK PRESS

he freedom struggle and Civil Rights Movement of Black people in America and throughout the world has lost another courageous, iconic, freedom fighter, journalist and leader. The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) salutes, respects, and supports the freedom-fighting legacy of George Edward Curry.

NNPA publishers, editors, journalists, and photographers from across the nation attended the “Celebration of Life” home-going service for George Curry in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at Weeping Mary Baptist Church on Saturday, August 27, 2016.

George at the age of 69 died from heart failure on August 20, 2016 in Takoma Park, Maryland.

George Curry was our beloved Editor-In-Chief of the NNPA News Wire Service and after decades of outstanding contributions and service to the Black Press in America, George evolved to be admired by fellow journalists as the “Dean of Black Press Columnists.” As a foot soldier in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, I personally have been blessed to have known and worked with George Curry as a fearlessly effective freedom fighter.

If I could find one word in the English language to describe the

professional and brotherly tenacity of George Curry, it would be “courageous.” He used his pen and his wit to openly challenge injustice in the face and presence of oppression. George had the courage to both write and speak truth to power without compromise of principle or ethics.

Reverend Jesse Jackson and Reverend Al Sharpton both travelled to Tuscaloosa to pay tribute and to eulogize the memory and legacy of George Curry. Rev. Jackson affirmed, “George was a freedom fighter.” Dr. Charles Steele Jr, President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), also a native of Tuscaloosa and lifelong friend of George paid tribute to Curry’s leadership and activism as a “freedom movement” journalist.

In the eulogy rendered last Saturday, Rev. Sharpton said that, “George never knew he was much more of a minister to me than I ever was to him…George Curry not only helped to mentor and bring along students and the next generation, but he also did it to many of us that you see out there on the front line.” Sharpton concluded that Curry was “part of a long tradition, but he was one of a kind.”

Roland Martin, accomplished news anchor for TV One and former editor of the Chicago

Defender, as well as a lifelong colleague of George Curry, passionately stated, “There was no newspaper, no magazine George Curry could not have worked for, but he chose to work in Black media…He chose to do that, because he said there has to be an independent voice that is unapologetic, that thinks about Black people from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to sleep.”

The passing of George Curry now raises the question of “Who will take his pen?” Who will step forward to keep the freedom-fighting legacy of George Curry alive today and into the future? Before George died, he had established EmergeNewsOnline.com. The NNPA supports George’s legacy and we encourage everyone to support Emerge News Online to ensure that what George envisioned and worked hard to establish will continue to grow and be successful in the marketplace.

In my remarks on behalf of the NNPA at the “Celebration of the Life of George Curry,” I shared that, “I have been in the presence of Malcolm X. I have been in the presence of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I have been in the presence of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan.

I’ve been in the presence of some

of our giants, male and female, but I want to say on this public record, in my life, I’ve never met a brother that’s had more courage than George Curry.”

As we face the immediate future, let us all first be thankful that we had the opportunity and blessing to work with George Curry. But we must show our gratitude by making sure that his courageous example of journalism continues. There is an African proverb that says “Freedom fighters do not in spirit pass away, their spirit lives to inspire the next generation of freedom fighters.”

We all know that George Curry supported mentoring and guiding the development of young journalists who are committed to the Black Press. That’s why the NNPA’s Discover the Unexpected (DTU) Journalism Fellowship program is so important. May these young journalists and others be guided by the great example of George Curry.

n October 1, 2, 3 and 4, during the month recognized as Art Advocacy Month, hundreds of artists, visitors and participants are expected to fill Art Gallery Harlem (Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building, 163 West 125th Street, Harlem, NY 10027, 2nd floor) for this special four-day 30 -artist group exhibition featuring newly created visual artworks incorporating the theme “What Dreams May Come,” in tribute to the late artist, designer and cultural activist, John Van Means (who ironically made his transition into the ancestral realm on the same day as Muhammad Ali, The Greatest).

Many of the exhibiting artists either created alongside John Van Means and or were mentored by him; others who had met him briefly are including their newly created artworks.

Saturday, October 1 from 4pm – 9pm, the opening day of “What Dreams May Come,” the “Celebration of Life Tribute to John Van Means” will also include a reception. Sunday, October 2, from 4pm – 9pm, the 50-plus piece exhibition including some of the works of John Van Means continues, and attendees can meet and greet the artists during the afternoon’s opening reception.

artists in lively interviews on their creative process and the power of manifesting one’s dream. On Monday, October 3 from 2pm - 6pm, attendees can participate in the Creative Painting segment and enjoy a Gallery Stroll which will be followed by a “Roundtable on Exhibiting in the Art Gallery.” The evening will conclude with a mix and mingle, live and recorded jazz and art performances. he nation has marked the historic occasion of the first woman in American history to win the Presidential nomination for a major political party.

She competed in 14 states, winning 28 delegates to the convention.

As a symbolic gesture, candidate Hubert Humphrey released his 83 Black delegates to cast their votes for Chisholm.

With the votes of several other delegates at that contentious convention, Chisholm finished fourth in a field of 13, with 152 delegates.

It is hard to imagine, in this era of sharp division in politics, the remarkable moment during that campaign when she visited her segregationist rival, Alabama Governor George Wallace, in his hospital room after he was shot and wounded. “What are your people going to say?” he asked her.

“I know what they are going to say,” she said.

“But I wouldn’t want what happened to you to happen to anyone.” She recalled that her words moved him to tears.

Chisholm retired from Congress in 1982 and remained an outspoken activist for civil rights until her death in 2005.

It would be difficult to overestimate the impact and influence of Chisholm’s Congressional service and Presidential candidacy. While Congress remains disproportionately White and male, one-in-five members of the current House and Senate are a

racial or ethnic minority, making the 114th Congress the most diverse in history. The nation’s first African-American President is winding up his second term, and a woman – a former senator and Secretary of State – has just won the Democratic nomination for President.

In her acclaimed speech on the Equal Rights Amendment in 1970, Chisholm said, “The Constitution they wrote was designed to protect the rights of White, male citizens.

While Hillary Clinton has come further than any woman Presidential candidate, she is not the first. Victoria Woodhull ran as the candidate for the Equal Rights Party in 1872. Margaret Chase Smith challenged Barry Goldwater for the Republican nomination in 1964. More recently, Pat Schroeder in 1988 and Carol Moseley Braun in 2004 vied for the Democratic nomination.

But the most historically significant forerunner to Hillary Clinton was Shirley Chisholm, the Brooklyn-born trailblazer who was also the nation’s first Afri-

can-American Congresswoman.

The daughter of working-class immigrants from the Caribbean, Chisholm became interested in politics while serving as the director of a child day care center and an educational consultant for the New York City Division of Day Care.

She served three years as a New York State Assemblywoman before running for Congress in 1968 with the slogan: “Unbought and Unbossed.”

“My greatest political asset, which professional politicians fear, is my mouth, out of which come all kinds of things one shouldn’t always discuss for reasons of political expediency,” Chisholm said.

Chisholm hired only women for her staff, half of whom were African Americans. “Of my two handicaps, being female put many more obstacles in my path than being Black,” she said.

She announced her candidacy for President at a Baptist church in Brooklyn. In an article about her candidacy, the Associated Press wrote, “Ironically, her major headache seems to come from Black politicians.”

“They think that I am trying to take power away from them,” she said. “The Black man must step forward. But that doesn’t mean the Black woman must step

Americans Upbeat on Making Progress in their Lives

I

f at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. That’s the spirit Americans are embracing in pursuit of their own progress.

A new survey for Citi’s #StandForProgress campaign shows nine in 10 Americans are optimistic about making progress in their lives in the next year. Just as many Americans agree that progress comes from within (93 percent) and that it’s the small steps every day that lead to success (94 percent). More than half of the Americans surveyed

by Toluna, the online insights platform, also believe that the road to progress passes through the lessons you learn

from setbacks.

“You can spend your life either focused on your limitations or work hard to overcome them and reach your full potential,” said Rudy Garcia-Tolson, a two-time Paralympic Gold Medalist who will be competing at the Games for the fourth time. Garcia-Tolson, who is participating in the Citi campaign, added: “I’m inspired by encouraging others to take on a challenge.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund Launches Apple Scholars Program

O

n Tuesday [Aug.25], the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) opened the application process for the Apple HBCU Scholars program to help the most valuable company in the world identify the next generation of high-performing leaders of color in technology.

The program, which targets students attending historically, Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), includes a scholarship for up to $25,000 during the recipient’s senior year, a summer internship at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., career-development opportunities, and the chance to serve as a TMCF Diversity Initiative/ Apple brand ambassador.

Students will also earn the opportunity to participate in the Apple HBCU immersion

experience in Cupertino, Calif., during the spring of 2016 and access to an Apple employee for a unique mentoring experience.

In the press release about the launch of the program, Denise Young Smith, the vice president of Worldwide Human Resources at Apple Inc., and a graduate of Grambling State University in Louisiana,

said that the program is about exposing gifted students from HBCUs to careers in technology.

The tech industry has recently come under increased scrutiny for its lack of diversity by civil rights leader Jesse Jackson and others after companies like Google, Apple and HP published data on the ethnic and gender diversity of their

workforces.

“We’re big believers that innovation will be strongest when talented people from diverse backgrounds are part of the creative process,” said Smith.

“That’s why we’re so proud to be partnering with TMCF to help us find the next generation of innovators.”

The Apple Scholars program is just one element of the $40 million partnership between TMCF and Apple announced earlier this year that will include the development of a talent database for hiring managers, research grants for faculty members and investments in entrepreneurship programs.

“The call out to our community is that when an organization as big and as well-known as Apple says, ‘I’m going to invest in you,’ they have actually

rewards for industries pushing to diversify their ranks. Taylor added that it may be the last chance for Black colleges to make the case that they are not just historically relevant, but that they’re also currently relevant, as well.

“This is Apple, one of the sexiest, most ubiquitous companies on the globe, so all eyes are watching and it’s just not limited to the technology space,” said Taylor. “I have meetings now with other companies in other sectors that say, ‘I am dying to hear how the Apple [investment] works out.”

he Principle of Mentalism is the first principle and what many believe to be the foundation for the seven Hermetic Principles (see Kybalion www.theartofwarogers. info). The Three Initiates, who introduced to the masses the teachings and wisdom of Hermes in their world famous publication “The Kaybalion” believed that this secretly guarded ancient wisdom should not be keep from the masses. and apply them to their wellbeing and advancement”. It goes on to say individuals will be enabled to apply intelligently the great Mental Laws, instead of using them in a haphazard manner”.

The Universe is Mental according to Hermetic Philosophy, the underlying reality of the Universe is mind, and we are all connected to the mind of the universe.

Our ability to manifest material reality from mental thought is because of that connection.

The Kybalion states that “If the Universe is mental in its nature, Mental Transmutation is the art of changing the conditions of the universe, along the lines

of Matter, Force and Mind; mental transmutation is the magical art used by the ancients that we know so little about”.

We are just beginning to understand the power of thought manifestation. Many still use this ability unwisely.

What you think about often will manifest itself into your material reality. This fact is now more important than ever. Our socially programed mind is programed to keep us believing in the illusions of a matrix that is changing. We are moving into another level of human evolution. Survival will soon depend on a different way of thinking of yourself, of your abilities, of your environment and of others.

She’s awkward, uncoordinated and too fat to be in the Olympics. Her laugh is so loud it makes my skin crawl and I have never, ever seen her exercise. Her mother is getting on my last nerve.

She’s collecting money from the family for her daughter to start gymnastic lessons. She said it’s expensive and she needs help.

Help? For what? A teenage fat farm? My niece is not, let me repeat, not Olympic material. I am embarrassed and I’m not trying to give her any of my hard earned

money and neither should anyone else in the family.

I’m sure I can use Facebook, but how else can I let all our friends and family know they should not contribute to this disaster?

Everyone should be a part of WHCR’s Harlem Emergency Preparedness Day on Tuesday, September 6 beginning at noon. The location will be the Harlem State Office Building at West 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd.

There will be music provided by WHCR Disc Jockeys and Radio Per-

sonalities along with presentations from various city agencies. This effort is to provide our neighbors with the tools and information to assist in surviving a natural disaster or other major event.

“Go-bags” will be given out. A complete list of survival material will be provided. The storms across the country and the inevitability of hurricanes and storms here make this a very important event. Remember the flooding that occurred with Hurricane Sandy.

family-owned and operated institution, Easco Boiler Company celebrated its 90th year in business with an open house at their headquarters on August 16, 2016. Leon Eastmond, 89 years old, took the reins of the business from his father in 1948. His grandson Tyren Eastmond is now the firm’s COO, and the fourth generation of the family to manage EASCO operations.

Under Tyren’s leadership, the company is focused

on expansion, sustainability and deepening community relationships. “We’re looking forward to growing and bringing more jobs and more development to this area and seeing if we can make this a centerpiece of the city,” he said.

EASCO has employed about 1,000 over the years, and their workforce is about 70% Bronx residents.

The firm provides job training for formerly incarcerated individuals and offers a form of scholarship for those who aren’t able to

support themselves while learning a new trade. As the country is focused on job creation, especially in disadvantaged communities, Easco is a model for employment policies that strengthen and add value to the community. “It’s a city treasure,” said Assemblyman Michael Blake, “When we’re talking about creating jobs for Bronxites, creating jobs for New Yorkers, EASCO is doing that.”

EASCO manufactured the boilers in use at Harvard University, New York’s celebrate the milestone 90th anniversary of EASCO, but “we came to call for fairness and equity,” he said.

Reflecting on close to a century in business, Eastmond observed the family wisdom that well-treated employees craft a better product and contribute to long term growth: “When you give to people, that money lives and grows forever.”

Let’s be clear: generally speaking it’s not a good idea to engage in high or even moderate intensity exercises too soon before or after eating as it can lead to problems such as nausea, stomach cramps, and of course, diminished exercise performance. However, light calisthenics and gentle stretching has been proven to lower triglyceride levels in the body and improve digestion according to health sources.

Bottom line, you don’t have to sprint like Usain Bolt or do cartwheels like the great Simone Biles to get your work out on!

This week, I feature the “Tri-Prone”, Step #10 of the Bed Aerobics Fitness Flow® therapeutic bed exercise system I created to help condition the

body, mind and spirit within the convenience and privacy of one’s bed. Tri-Prone strengthens the arms, back and core muscles including abs, glutes and hamstrings.

Pillow Quote: “I am prone to try and never give up” Setup: Clear away any pillows or bulky bedding to give your arms room to stretch forward toward the headboard. Lie down on your stomach. Rest your chin lightly (barely touching) on the bed.

Keep your head forward, and gaze down so as not to strain your neck.

Step 1: Bring your arms down to both sides of your torso.

Make a fist, palms facing up.

Step 2: Contract (squeeze) both your abdominal muscles and your glutes simultaneously as you gently pump your arms up

and down at a steady, moderate pace without resting them on the bed. 8-12 reps. Keep arms firm.

Step 3: Immediately slide your arms out to both sides, fists face down now. Gently pump arms in the same fashion. 8-12 reps.

Step 4: Immediately slide arms forward toward the headboard, fists down. Gently pump arms. 8-12 Reps.

Repeat entire sequence should you desire.

Bed Notes: Remember to contract your abs and glutes simultaneously throughout the entire exercise, to stabilize your back. For less intensity, lower the number of repetitions and/or rest arms on the bed for 8 seconds in between each step.

“I heard your concerns and today we’re trying to fix those concerns,” Council Member King told the seniors. “We want to stop putting band-aids on the problem.”

Both Council Member King and Dr. Torres explained to the seniors that the repairs won’t take place immediately.

“In order for us to come up with this figure we had to engage in a bidding process with contractors,” explained Dr. Torres. “Now that we have identified a company, the paperwork goes to the city for review.

Once it’s been given the green light then we can start with the repairs.”

his past winter, seniors at the R.A.I.N. Apartments for the Elderly on White Plains Road, Bronx, held a town hall meeting where they voiced their complaints about the lack of heat in their apartments and major structural problems with the building, including a leaky roof.

Last month, the seniors learned that their complaints were heard when NYC Council Member Andy King allocated $733,161.00 for repairs to the building.

BP ADAMS AND BROOKLYN ARTS COUNCIL ENCOURAGE SMALL LOCAL CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS TO APPLY FOR LATEST ROUND OF DESTINATION BROOKLYN MINI-GRANTS

rooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) encouraged the borough’s small local cultural organizations through the second annual Destination>Brooklyn mini-grant program. Funded by Borough President Adams and NYC & Company Foundation, Destination>Brooklyn makes $1,500 awards available for the creation, production, and distribution of print promotional materials that represent the organization’s artistic and cultural activities, with an emphasis on borough tourism. In

the last two years, $73,500 in mini-grants have been awarded to 49 local cultural organizations in more than a dozen neighborhoods across Brooklyn, which has led to the production of more than 165,000 pieces of marketing materials. Applications are now open and will be accepted at brooklynartscouncil.org through Wednesday, September 21st.

“Destination>Brooklyn is a vehicle for communicating the cultural bounty of our borough far and wide, showcasing the small local arts groups that give our communities character and

help define the world-famous Brooklyn brand,” said Borough President Adams. “Through the valued partnership of BAC and the NYC & Company Foundation, these grants make it possible to push cultural tourism forward in neighborhoods from Clinton Hill to Coney Island, including for residents that are looking to discover some of the artistic treasures in their own backyards.”

But Medgar Evers College, a predominantly black institution, is already doing its part to increase the number of people of color in the water. The college is located in the mostly African-American and Jewish neighborhood of Crown Heights, where children of all colors flock to the classes taught in the MEC pool

by Imagine Swimming. The company rents the pool from Medgar Evers. The pool is also utilized by MEC staff, faculty and students.

“It’s beautiful,” Kate Pelatti, the company’s chief operating officer said of MEC’s pool, which is competition size. “Our mission is to bring awareness to the sport and

teach the life-saving skills to all people, especially those who may not have had it in the past. And Crown Heights, specifically Medgar Evers, is a great example of that.”

Anthony Ervine, an Imagine Swimming ambassador and former teacher (who happens to be black and Jewish) brought home two gold medals in swimming from Rio this year.

n the United States, 70 percent of African-American and 60 percent of Hispanic children cannot swim or swim poorly, as widely noted by the media recently in the wake of the success of Simone Manuel.

Her victory in the 100-meter freestyle in the Olympics made her the first African-American woman to win a gold medal for individual swimming. The racial gap is partly explained by a lack of access to pools for African-Americans and a history of segregated pools and beaches.

“People don’t know how to swim when they don’t have access to pools,” said Rene Bostic, the Director of Athletics for Medgar Evers College.

“Our pool is available for rentals. We would like to see our community take advantage of

HINTON PARK RE-OPENS FOUR MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE AFTER RECEIVING $2 MILLION UPGRADE

A passive seating area on the park’s northern end was also upgraded, with more plantingsand decorative World’s Fair benches. Formal shrub beds, surrounded by two and one-halffoot steel fencing, were placed behind some of the benches in the central seating area toscreen views of the street and the multiuse field. Shade and flowering trees were plantedalong the paths and around the circular seating area. The open lawn area along 113th Streethas been regraded to divert storm runoff into a rain garden.

Construction began inNovember 2015.

Following the speaking program, Council Member Ferreras-Copeland hosted a free ‘Back to School’ celebration where over 500 children received book bags and school supply giveaways, and over 1,000 received free bike helmets and fittings. The event was sponsored by HealthFirst, Charter Communications and the NYC Department of Transportation.

This park honors Reverend George Warren Hinton (1880-1969), a dedicated pastor and active community member.

Born in North Carolina, Hinton moved to Queens as a young man. There he served for 41 years as the reverend of the Corona Congregational Church. Much of his spare time was devoted to community service, particularly in the cause of health and social services.

n Friday, September 9, 6:30-8:30pm, Boundless Tales, the longest-running reading series in the borough of Queens, is celebrating its five-year anniversary at Queens Council on the Arts. Founder and curator Aida Zilelian began the series with the goal of providing a venue for writers who are passionate about their writing, and who would like to share their work in a public forum. Alongside Aida, Audrey Dimola and Devin Doyle are hosts of the series, whose help and support in many other areas have helped Boundless grow into what it has now become.

program, Boundless Tales is proud to represent writers that are progressing in various stages of their careers, whether they are emerging, mid-career or professionally established. This evening celebrates writers who have been featured at Boundless and who represent a strong diversity of writing. The participating writers are Jennifer Baker, Susana

Case, Shakira Croce, Tim Fredrick, Leona Godin, Stephanie Laterza, Matthew Thorburn. Attendees will have the opportunity to pose questions to the writers and network with artists and community from across Queens. Admission is free to QCA members and $10 non-members.

ouncil Member Julissa Ferreras-Copeland, NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP and community leaders cut the ribbon on $2 million in improvements to Hinton Park in Corona on August 25. The project was completed four months ahead of the estimated schedule and includes a new volleyball court, adult fitness equipment and landscaping enhancements.

“I am so pleased that the new and improved Hinton Park is open ahead of schedule for ourfamilies to enjoy. These changes will welcome more to use what is already a popular park,specifically encouraging my community to do physical exercise and remain healthy. Theyare the result of a community visioning process that I am proud to have funded to make areality. I thank the Department of Parks for their work and for bringing innovation to ourparks.”

“NYC Parks is extremely proud to open Hinton Park significantly earlier than expected, sothat members of this community can enjoy the space during the last few weeks of summer,”said Commissioner Silver. “New features include a volleyball court, which will surely beused by the many Ecua-volley players in the area, and four new hills which

have beencreated to provide views of the entire landscape. We are grateful to Council MemberFerreras-Copeland for supporting this great community park.”

Funded entirely by Council Member Ferreras-Copeland, the Hinton Park project focusedprimarily on the southern section of the park, where a volleyball court, adult fitnessequipment, game tables, and drinking fountains were installed. The remaining portion ofthe southern area contains a grassy lawn separated by curvilinear paths lined with lightpoles and benches to match the character of the walkways in the northern portion of thepark. New seating areas have been placed along existing and proposed paths, and takeadvantage of the shade from the large trees to the south and the expansive views to thenorth.

Four hills have been created to enhance the visual interest of this formerly flat site. Theintent is to provide the park with a greater sense of enclosure, definition and separationfrom some of the surrounding streets. Grass swales and rain gardens are located adjacent tothese small hills to capture and absorb the storm water. Retention structures,
