he word vote is composed of only four letters, but is undeniably the most powerful four-letter word in the American lexicon and the greatest weapon in the fight against oppression and the preservation of our democracy.

In 1954, Medgar Wiley Evers became the first state field secretary of the NAACP in the segregated State of Mississippi. Medgar opened an office in Jackson, Mississippi where he had doubled NAACP membership to more than 15,000, and took on the assignment of investigating the murder of Emmett Till. On June 11, 1963, President John F. Kennedy addressed the Nation from the Oval Office calling for congressional action in the area of civil rights, defining the cause for the first time as a moral issue.

Early that morning on June 12 as Medgar returned home from an organizing meeting,

he was ambushed and shot to death in the driveway of his home.

At the time, Medgar was carrying NAACP T-shirts that read “Jim Crow Must Go”.

We must continue to carry the banner stained by the blood, sweat and tears of our ancestors, who sacrificed their lives for us to attain the right to vote. We must honor their legacy by being vigilant in the struggle for justice and equality and refuse to succumb to voter apathy. Like the generations before us who were kept from the polls through threats of lynching, poll taxes, and grandfather clauses, we must not let today’s oppressive tactics in the form of police brutality, voter ID laws, or the striking down of provisions of the Civil Rights Act deter us from pressing forward in exercising our right of unfettered access to the ballot box.

Together, we must pledge to never get weary in our fight to

overcome oppression or to be lulled into an empty pit of despair based on false reports that change cannot be made through the ballot.

As President of the NAACP Mid-Manhattan Branch, and a leader in the civil rights movement, I have witnessed first-hand how the powerful weapon of voter enfranchisement can be effectively used to slay the oppressive laws of Jim Crow in the South; apartheid in the Motherland of South Africa; and has resulted in the election of Barack Obama as the First African American Commander-in-Chief of the United States of America.

For those who do not believe that their vote counts, I remind them of the lessons of history where one vote made a difference: By one vote, Texas was admitted to the Union; By one vote, Hitler won leadership of the German Nazi Party; and By one vote, the

n interesting aspect of the home buying process that is often overlooked is making sure that you are applying for the right mortgage product. You need to shop for a mortgage with the same level of interest as when shopping for your home. Not every lender will offer every type of mortgage product. You need to know the differences between the mortgage products.

Here are two popular mortgage products for first time buyers: Federal Housing Administration (FHA). This is a government backed mortgage. The loans are usually sold to secondary investors i.e. Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae. The minimum down payment is 3.5%. You can also use gift money from

a family member to assist you with the down payment. Usually FHA will accept lower minimum credit score of 620 however most lenders will still require a score around 650.

The FHA cannot be used for cooperative properties but is for real property condominiums, single and multi family homes.

If you are putting down less than 20% you will also have to pay a mortgage insurance premium (MIP). You will pay both an upfront fee at closing and also a monthly MIP for the life of the mortgage.

Another mortgage product is the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA).

This mortgage product can write one to two family homes, co-ops and condos. The mini-

mum down payment is 3% and 1% must be your own money.

SONYMA also can provide you with financial assistance loan 3% of the purchase price up to $15,000 for either down payment (DPAL) or closing costs (CCAL). However, to use this grant assistance you will pay an additional .375 on your interest rate. If the interest rate was 3.00 using DPAL or CCAL will increase your rate to 3.375.

CITY TO BUILD SENIOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING, HEALTH CARE FACILITY ON LOWER EAST SIDE

M

ayor Bill de Blasio today announced a plan to build an affordable housing and health care facility designed to replace services lost in the wake of a Lower East Side nursing home closure last year. The City will issue a Request for Proposals in 2017, paving the way for the return of health care lost as a result of a mishandled deed modification at Rivington House.

With a development that will house more than 100 seniors in a mixed-use affordable housing and health care setting, investment in the facility is expected to exceed the $16 million the City received in exchange for lifting deed restrictions and inadvertently allowing for the conversion of the building to luxury housing.

In July, the City announced a set of sweeping reforms to a

decades-old deed modification process. The new rules will provide more transparency and accountability for the public.

They will, for the first time, formally require the City to consider the public value of a project seeking modifications to land-use restrictions.

“Rivington House’s conversion to luxury housing never should have happened,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“This community was the victim of a broken process, City error and unscrupulous developers looking to make a buck.

Our reforms will prevent that from ever happening again.

This investment is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to the health of this neighborhood.”

The City has identified 30 Pike St. on the Lower East Side as the site for the future

development. The property is owned by the Department of Environmental Protection and will be reconfigured to accommodate the new project as well as DEP’s operations. It sits less than a mile from Rivington House.

“My first wish is to return Rivington House to its previous use, a home for those who needed assisted living support, but I look forward to working with the Administration and the community to build an equal number of permanent affordable senior housing and assisted-living units in the neighborhood,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “I am glad that the Administration has agreed to use the $16 million from the sale at Rivington and additional City funds for this purpose.”

riple Grammy Winner, TONY Winner, UN Goodwill Ambassador, Producer and Vocalist Jazz Legend Dee Dee Bridgewater took us through 100 years of jazz in Lincoln Center’s season-opening weekend of Singers Over Manhattan on Friday 9/23 and Saturday 9/24. I attended the Saturday concert where she was joined by younger progeny who represent the cutting edge of where the music currently is and where it may be going. The band, led by music director/composer/drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr., featured

the eclectic Theo Bleckmann, known for his use of “voice as instrument,” and an amazing rising star with a voice like a nightingale, Alicia Olatuja, internationally known for her interpretation of jazz traditions with a touch of gospel and R&B. They performed the socially conscious music of the 1950s through today, featuring the works of legends Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Joni Mitchell. The band also featured Allyn Johnson, Larry Genadier, and David Rosenthal. A Free pre-concert discussion made the evening all the more memorable.

There is no doubt that few entertainers can command such soulful depth of artistic performance in every medium: from Jazz performer and arranger to the London’s West End in LADY DAY on Broadway where DEE DEE captured the hearts of audiences worldwide in THE WIZ with her signature song, If You Believe.

Hope, love, awareness, strength, resilience and freedom were the themes magically explored during this evening of musical empowerment where Dee Dee took the audience to a conscious level of social engagement through her renditions of the very best of Nina, Abbey and Joni.

arlem Repertory Theatre will stage “The Wizard of Oz,” co-produced by the Yip Harburg Foundation, for young (and young-at-heart) audiences October 29 to December 13 at Tato Laviera Theatre at Harlem Prep Elementary School, 240 East 123rd Street (at 3rd Ave.), Manhattan. This production of the classic musical has a multi-racial cast, a jazzy underscore and authoritative dramaturgy by representatives of the Yip Harburg Foundation. The schedule offers weekday shows for school groups and Saturday matinees for the convenience of individual families. Director/choreographer is Keith Lee Grant, Artistic Director of Harlem Rep, who is in the midst of a four-year project of presenting four classic musicals that have lyrics by E.Y. “Yip” Harburg, who was known in his lifetime as the “social conscience of

Broadway.”

“The Wizard of Oz,” with its timeless score and eternal allegories, is a magical experience for young (and young-at-heart) audiences. Based on MGM’s Classic Motion Picture, the stage version to be mounted here follows John Kane’s adaptation for the Royal Shakespeare Company, which

is based on the book by L. Frank Baum, with brilliant songs by lyricist E.Y. (“Yip”) Harburg and composer Harold Arlen.

Thanks to work of dramaturg Deena R. Harburg, Executive Vice President and Artistic Director of the Yip Harburg Foundation, in association with acclaimed librettist Arthur Perlman, New York

audiences will have a chance to see the show sharpened to more of the original vision of E.Y. “Yip” Harburg, who was an unashamedly progressive thinker. The cast is multi-racial and features Latino, Black and Asian actors, fulfilling Yip’s vision of a multicultural universe. Dorothy, played by Taylor-Rey Rivera, is interpreted as a modern girl and future leader who is growing to realize the confidence she possesses. Her three Land-of-Oz friends--the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion--are envisioned as people of great potential who only need to actualize the heart, brains and courage they already have. One of the story’s themes is how the weakness of adults forces children to seize their own destinies and, ironically, to grow up themselves.

According to the Yip Harburg family, Yip wanted to address Dorothy

finally going home as a leader. At Harlem Rep, Dorothy will come home to lead the rebuilding of her family’s farm. All the “refocusing” is accomplished through the acting of the characters, without changing the iconic dialogue of the script.

Deena Harburg reminds us that “Oz” is also the story of three strong women--Dorothy and two witches-and illustrates how we need more woman leaders. Munchkinland and The Emerald City reflect Harburg’s utopian dreams of societies that are egalitarian, without dictatorship of monarchy or religion.

Interestingly, “Over the Rainbow” actually expresses the dream of an immigrant--or a would-be immigrant--for a better life in a far away land, a theme of contemporary resonance. This classic song is under-appreciated for this original intent, but is a poignant message in

our time, when callousness toward the immigrant is one of our leading socio-political concerns. In the film and its theater adaptation, the song is only sung once. But in this production, it’s reprised several times, once with a calypso feel that is reminiscent of the now-famous rendition that was broadcast a few years back on TV’s “Glee”, and recorded by Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo’ole.

For family audiences, there are performances on six Saturdays at 3:00 PM: October 8 & 29; November 5, 12 & 19; December 10. There is only one evening performance: Sunday, December 11 at 7:00 PM. Tickets to these performances are $10 general admission and $20 premium seating.

Jarvis Jenkins of New York Jets tackles literacy in Harlem barbershop

I asked Jenkins, specifically, why Harlem? “I give so much back to my community in South Carolina, but it’s not only about where you grew up.”

We also spoke to Irby, who told us how Barbershop Books began. “I was teaching first grade in the Bronx

and I was getting a haircut in the barbershop across the street from my school and one of my students came into the shop and sat down, and he was kind of sitting there, doing nothing, kind of looking bored, and I saw this and I said ‘he should be practicing his reading,’ he was my student and I knew.

And I thought ‘man, I wish I had a children’s book I could give him.’ This sparked the idea for Barbershop Books, a community-based literacy program that aims to create child-friendly reading centers in barbershops for boys and girls ages 4-8.”

Jenkins explained to the students why reading was important, even in his job, which requires a lot of physical work, explaining that his coach, who is like his teacher, gives him a playbook which he must read and study every day.

We spoke to Jenkins about why fighting literacy is important to him. “I didn’t really have the after school programs where I could fur-

ther my learning, and it kind of took a toll on me.” The National Football League baller wants to make the path easier for the next generation, and this is only the beginning. “This is not the only location we are going to do, but this is definitely a start.”

n September 26 the ECOSOC Chamber in the United Nations Headquarters in New York hosted a rare (only women on the panel) yet extremely important event that marked the launching of UN -SONG, intended to advance the much too modest progress made until now by Governments and Member States of the UN system worldwide in enforcing the Program of Action contained in the Durban Agreement for the Elimination of Racism adopted by consensus 15 years ago.

It is supported by the Permanent Missions to the United Nations of the United States, 16

Brazil, Jamaica, Sierra Leone, St. Vincent Grenadines.

This initiative is clearly in line with the important remarks made in March by Secretary General BAN KI- MOON, in his speech at the General Assembly of the UN to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: “The international community acknowledged in Durban that no country could claim to be free of racism. This remains the case today. We have undoubtedly come a long way in ensuring equal rights and non-discrimination.

Member States have

adopted or amended legislation to guard against racial discrimination. An International Decade for People of African Descent was proclaimed by the General Assembly and will continue through the year 2024. Civil society organizations worldwide working on racism are increasingly active and vocal.

Yet the persistence of racism indicates that we have not yet done enough. I am deeply alarmed by a surge of intolerance, racist views and hate-driven violence around the world. Racial profiling and violence against certain communities is on the rise. Economic hardship and political opportunism are triggering increased hostility towards minorities.

This is being manifested most directly in anti-refugee, anti-migrant and, in particular, anti-Muslim bigotry, attacks and violence.

Extreme right-wing political parties are fo-

menting divisiveness and dangerous myths.

Even once-centrist parties have hardened their views; once-moderate countries are seeing xenophobia rise sharply; and once-sober voices have exploited fears in a dangerous echo of the darkest chapters of the last century. All of this increases the risk of societal fracture, instability and conflict.

By implementing the Durban agreements, we can uplift not only those who suffer most profoundly but humanity as a whole” This is precisely the mission of UN -SONG created by a group of strong minded, powerful women who said: “Enough is enough, the status quo can no longer be sustained: after 400 hundred years of slavery black people worldwide are still affected more than anybody else by poverty, hanger, unemployment, homelessness, poor health care and education! We can no

longer wait for others to find the solution, it is time we take matters in our own hands. We are underrepresented in the UN even though we have a Charter that says that the diversity of the Countries it’s our strength and must be respected. We are here today to assume responsibility to drive the process of equality and inclusion. To achieve this goal UN-SONG will work with International and Regional organizations as well as civil society movements to make Member States accountable and ‘oblige’ them to give priority to projects specifically aimed at combating racism and discrimination against people of African descent! We are the majority of the world population, Africa is where civilization started, we can be powerful again, we are strong we can do it together!”

African Film Festival hosts Annual Family Day Celebration

he African Film Festival held their Ninth Annual Family Day Celebration on Governors Island on the last sunny Sunday of September. The event, which began at noon and ended at 5pm, featured activities for people of all ages, including Afro-Brazilian, Senegalese and Guinean dance classes, needle arts demonstrations, double-dutch workshop and more. There was also authentic West African and Jamaican food for sale, which, along with the dance classes, appeared to be the biggest hits of the day. There was also a screening of four short films: “Orisha’s Journey,” “The Ball,” “Ousmane,” and “Afripedia: Ghana.”

The Family Day Celebration has become a popular and well-attended event for the African Film Festival. Harlem News spoke with Mahen Bonetti, Founder and Executive Director of African Film Festival (who curates and facilitates all African Film Festival programming) about the annual Family Day Celebration and its history. Though it is the Family Day Celebration’s ninth year on Governors Island, the history of the event itself extends much further.

“Since 1999 we’ve been doing our summer series outside,” Mahen informed me, retelling the history of the event in various locations all around New York City. We also discussed

what attracts people to the Family Day Celebration.

“People discover something new,” something that New Yorkers seem to always be on a quest for.

Whether it was food, new dance moves or a director or film, there was plenty to discover at the Family Day Celebration.

Mahen also talked about some of the goals

of the African Film Festival, which she founded in 1990 to create “diverse programs that aid and empower audiences and filmmakers, alike” and which produces year-round programing both nationally and internationally.

“I’m very proud of the stories that we are seeing and sharing with audiences and I’m just so proud

that the work keeps growing” which is generating new audiences. “It’s a very exciting time culturally…people are connecting to their continental origins.”

She also talked about her inspiration. “I want to know about myself, I want to know about you, and I want to know about the next person and I want to love them and I want to love myself.” Then Mahen

made a profound statement that people of all cultures, creeds, nationalities and ethnicities need to hear. “If any change is going to happen, then we are going to have to shed this self-hate.

Don’t Let Warts Slow You Down

W

arts are common skin growths that can appear on the hands (palmar warts) or on the bottoms of feet (plantar warts). They are the result of a virus, specifically the human papilloma virus (HPV), which has entered the skin through

cracks in dry skin or via tiny cuts or scrapes. (Different types of HPV affect different parts of the body.)

The virus thrives in warm and moist conditions, so walking barefoot in locker rooms or around swimming pools is a routine way of contracting it. Plantar warts are usually small and can feel rough, grainy and hard, and little black dots can be seen within them.

Children and teens are most likely to develop plantar warts, and this is the time of year when they tend to appear after the virus is contracted during a summer of communal activities in playgrounds, camps, parks and pools.

Warts should be treated -- without treatment they can spread.

While there are plenty of home treatments for plantar warts on the market, there are even more reasons to see the podiatrist: for example, if the patient has diabetes, PAD, HIV/ AIDS or another immune system disorder; if you’ve tried to treat it at home, but the wart persisted, returned or multiplied; or if you’re not sure if the growth is a wart. Home treatments with strong chemicals that can destroy the virus can also destroy healthy tissue; destroying the wart is really best left to podiatrists. Diabetics should never selftreat.

What would a podiatrist do? First the doctor would determine if the growth is indeed a wart, and if it is, then decide on an appro-

priate course of treatment that will kill the virus, either via simple surgery with local anesthesia or cautery, or by prescribing a medication to apply daily.

The doctor will also determine if the location of the wart and pain associated with it have caused changes in gait and then suggest exercises or shoe inserts to correct it. Checking children’s feet periodically is a good way to head off pain or problems caused by warts.

Empowerment Program For Teen Girls Hosts Annual Workshop In Harlem

n advocacy program that teaches teens the importance of self esteem and their own empowerment honored young people making a difference at it’s annual workshop in Harlem.

“The Power of You Teens - Third Annual Back to School Empowerment Experience,” held its yearly workshop Sept.

25 at the Alhambra Ballroom.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer was among the approximately 300 participants, who were treated to performances, a fashion show, inspirational talks and gift bags as part of the free event.

“This is a day of education, it’s a day of empowerment, it’s a

day of fun,” Felicia Gibson Jaycox, the nonprofit’s CEO and founder, told the Harlem News.

“We wanted to bring these teens and their families to celebrate girl power.”

Lea Robinson, a singer and the granddaughter of Sugar Hill Records founder Sylvia Robinson, performed a few songs for the audience, and the mentor said when she heard about the opportunity to help out teens, she jumped at the chance.

“I want to use my firsts and talents to help other people,” said Robinson, who is in the midst of filming a reality show for Bravo about her life and family. “I love anything that empowers someone, especially

“I got my award because I did something good to help other people,” Njapa said. “I cut my hair to raise money to support my friend.”

And Njapa had at least one VIP fan - Lea Robinson.

“I almost cried when I saw Chloe,” she said. “That just touched me. To be so young and be so selfless, that’s just incredible.”

“I want to show girls that the sky is the limit,” Young said, adding that she wants to work in philanthropy when she becomes an adult. “Anything you want to do, you can do.”

The rising star also performed at the event and hosted a fashion show.

Young’s mother, Jennifer Rampersaud, gushed about how gratified she was of her girl’s recognition.

“I’m very proud of her,” she said, “and I’m very proud to be her mom. She is being rewarded for all the hard work and sacrifices she’s made from a young age.”

hat we understand and believe to be true today is based upon an agreement.

When the agreement of what is true changes what we understand and believe to be true today may not be true tomorrow. There was a time in Europe where there was an agreement that the world was flat.

The truth was based upon an understanding and belief of an agreement. When it was proven that the world was not flat, the agreement changed and so

did the understanding of the truth about the world.

Governments create laws based upon agreement, when the numbers of individuals that disagree with a current law is greater than those that agree; the laws will change, because of the change in agreement of the majority, which will also create a change in what is understood to be true. Trying to change an agreement of truth in organized religion was always a dangerous business though-out history.

When we reflect upon the truth of who we are, is it based on an internal agreement

of our self-worth or is our truth based on an external socially programmed agreement of who and what we are. If you desire to change your life chances and opportunities but feel stuck; you must change your agreement of what you believe is true about yourself and your abilities.

We are moving into a time of clarity and a change in many of the agreements that people considered to be true. I may seem overly optimistic when I say this, but I believe a greater number of individuals throughout the world

are starting to embrace a spiritual oneness within themselves and their external environment than ever before in modern history.

I believe the future will bring a change in many agreements that have long been considered true about wellness, politics, religion, wealth and humans as an evolving species in this universe. We all know what’s true for some may not be true for others. It is all about the agreement.

Agreements are hard to change but the truth about anything is based on an individual or group agree

ment. Some will never change what they agree to be true individually or as a group.

What does all this mean to you? What you understand to be true about yourself, your environment, your abilities are agreed upon truths that can change if the agreement changes. It is important to understand that you have faith to change your agreement of truth about yourself and others. It is important to see what you believe is true for what it really is, an agreement; an agreement that can be changed.

ill someone please tell me why we don’t take better care of ourselves? The other day I was at the checkout counter in a well-known home-supply store, and the cashier, a young woman, asked me to wait a minute. The problem I had, though, was that she took out from under the counter a very large bottle of a sugary, caffeine-laden soft drink.

She told me, “I know that I shouldn’t be drinking this, but, like most of my people, I’m long on knowledge but short on willpower.” Wow! And she thought she was speaking for all of us! Of course I engaged her in conversation. I asked her why she drank the beverage if she knew it was bad for her. She said she was hooked. I suggested she try water, which would satisfy her thirst, and she agreed it would be just as easy to have a tall bottle of water under the counter. Then she told me she was a borderline diabetic and smoked three packs of cigarettes a day!

Well, that put it over the top for me. Now, I am not one to tell others how to live their lives; but I wanted to know why an intelligent, beautiful woman would take those chances with

her life? Do you know that she went on to tell me that she was a licensed dietician? That admission really got to me, because here is this woman who is all the things I mentioned earlier and, on top of it all, she knows better!

I started thinking. She’s not the only one. How many more of us out there aren’t taking care of ourselves and hurting ourselves? If it’s not you then perhaps it’s someone you know. Don’t tempt fate.

Al Taylor, Pastor of the Mennonite Infinity Church in Harlem. The discussion centered on his experiences during his 800-mile walk to Chicago. He mentioned how police officers and regular people were supportive of him – even though they didn’t “look like him”. The people he met were just people

“Another Day in the Death of America: A Chronicle of Ten Short Lives”

T

oday was an ordinary day.

It had its ups and downs; pleasant surprises came between the mundane and the irritating and you’ll look back at it tomorrow with clarity, perhaps, but its details will be sketchy in a decade.

It was an ordinary day which, says Gary Younge, also means an average of seven kids in the U.S. lost their lives to a bullet.

In “Another Day in the Death of America,” he explains.

On November 23, 2013, most Americans were preparing for Thanksgiving. We were marking the anniversary of JFK’s assassination and watching the weather, the news on Iraq, or the Baylor/Oklahoma State game. We were enjoying our weekend. And on that

Saturday, 10 random children died of gunshot wounds in this country.

That, says Younge, has become too normal. It barely even registers anymore. For awhile, there were websites that tracked this kind of thing but for the most part, the deaths of these “kids” – coincidentally, all boys on this day; seven African Americans, one white, two Hispanic – are unmarked, except to families and locals.

The youngest, nine-yearold Jaiden Dixon, was a “giving soul” with a “valentine” he thought he might marry someday. Preparing for school on a Friday morning, he opened the door for his mother’s ex-boyfriend, who shot Dixon in the face.

Dixon died the next day.

The girlfriend of Kenneth Miller, who was “just three days shy of his twentieth birthday,” learned of his death through Twitter. Seventeen-year-old Stanley Taylor was killed over “spontaneous drama.” Legally blind, eighteen-year-old Pedro Dado Cortez worked for his father and dreamed of learning to drive.

Eleven-year-old Tyler Dunn was shot by a playmate, while sixteen-year-old Edwin Rajo was accidentally shot in the chest by his best friend.

Samuel Brightmon was “conflict averse,” Tyshon Anderson had been shot several times before, Gustin Hinnant was an honor-roll student, and Gary Anderson was killed because he wore a red hoodie.

One bullet tore apart a

small town. All devastated families and friendships. Some were in areas where “Nobody knows where the next shot is coming from…. But everybody knows it’s coming.”

Before we get any further, there’s this: British-born author Gary Younge doesn’t overtly advocate, nor does he denigrate, gun control but astute readers can catch a clue.

He also writes about parenting, particularly within the Black community; about gangs; prisons; and about the NRA and its influence.

And these are interesting subjects but the real power comes in the stories he uncovers in “Another Day in the Death of America.” Younge doesn’t just write about the demises of the 10 “kids” he found; he also helps read-

ers understand the men they might’ve become and what we truly lost in losing them. That kind of unflinching journalism packs gut-punching, timely meaning, and you won’t forget it.

Emotionally Offsides: When Your Anger Gets the Best of You!

W

ith the football season underway, I reminisce about my college football days as an offensive lineman at Stony Brook University. I trained to have the ability to control my opponent’s ‘center of gravity’ against their will to give my team a chance to score.

I can only imagine how it must have felt for my opponent to be controlled by someone else against his will. Being physically dominated unwillingly on the football field must have made him feel disappointed, regretful, upset and angry.

These possible emotional outcomes could occur as a result of competition. A competitive

space where win or loss is expected. A mental battle wrapped in physical conflict. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I’ve realized how often clients allow others to control their ‘center of gravity’ in a negative way, causing physical arousal including: increased heart rate, muscle exertion, hyperventilation, headaches, high blood pressure, or a change in mood and stress. When that takes place, without any physical contact, that is the dilemma.

So the next time you find yourself facing this dilemma, here are a few ways to remember what’s at stake: - My Authority -

In mental health, a common goal is often emotional stability. How we engage and respond to feelings that we experience is vital to maintaining our autonomy. When we allow someone to influence our physiological arousal in a negative way, it often influences our thought process. As a result our response and/ or overall objective may change in the moment.

Our authority is at stake, so be mindful of triggers in the form of a person or environment that you may be particularly sensitive to. Your response dictates whether you will surrender your self-control to the trigger or overcome that moment.

- My Health Our well-being is at stake when we allow someone to get us angry.

The physiological arousal that can take place in our angered response can have a negative effect on many areas including physically and mentally. Read more about this in the article “7 Ways Anger Is Ruining Your Health.”

Your health is vital, so it’s important to be aware of how you express your anger. You can learn and practice healthy ways to be expressive during those times on your own or consult with a counselor for help.

- My Reputation Our reputation can affect how people close to

us view us and what they expect from us. When those close to us stop trying to express or share with us due to expected responses such as a short temper or becoming angry before listening to someone, it can hurt the relationship and cause tension.

Keep in mind that your reputation is at stake. Relationships are a big source of our happiness and overall joy in life. While working with clients, family, and friends, I’ve witnessed how relationships can diminish when they act and respond to others out of anger.

Just like in football we have to learn how to control our ‘center of gravi-

ty’ within our everyday lives. So the next time you find yourself getting angry, take a moment to contemplate what’s at stake and do not jump emotionally offsides!
