GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE!-

October has new meaning for me now that I am a triple negative breast cancer survivor. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The color pink is a powerful reminder of the many women who are newly diagnosed or those who are now survivors.

Not a day goes by that I don’t remind myself that indeed this cancer can come back, especially when you had triple negative – it is more likely to return. Therefore, I take one day at a time and try to enjoy everything I can, being cancer-free at this time. I am please to bring you my story and the story of two other triple negative breast cancer survivors, as well as an article regarding research being held at Rutgers. My hope is that you will learn something about this diagnosis; if not for yourself for someone you know who might have to face this in the future. This is definitely a time when knowledge is power. (see pages 12-16) We had planned to have our Women Business Owners networking event on October 15th at the Alhambra Ballroom. Obviously that is not going to happen since we usually have more than 200 people participate. Therefore we are planning to connect virtually and asking the women to produce a 1-2 minute video so we can promote their products/ services during our virtual event. If you are a woman who owns a business uptown between 96th Street to 155th Street send us a video and your email so that we can send you the link to participate. Send video to harlemnewsinc@aol.com. I know that we all are aware how important it is for us to vote in November. Plan to do what you have to do to get your vote in. Plan to vote early. Mail in your ballot if you must, however, you ought not to be able to sleep at night if you fail to vote.

T

here are folk who primarily function on the premise that they are entitled to have what they want, when they want it, no matter how it may affect the wellbeing of others. Self -centered egomaniacs will look pass you to get what they want.

They will call you by every name, other than a child of God, to brand their name and secure their fame.

Self-confidence was always considered to be a good attribute in character building. It would strengthen a desire to achieve and enforce determination and aspiration. It is needed to survive in a world where the wind can knock you off your feet.

We are witnessing as

a nation how hurtful and abusive inflated self-confidence can be in leadership.

Publicly displayed disrespect and negative accusations are mean and disruptive, yet it has become a force of nature to get a president’s personal point across.

Common sense ought to say wicked words will come back and bite you in the butt. Shame ought to say you have gone too

far with thoughtless words that flow like volcanic lava from the lips of persons lacking sympathy and empathy across airwaves and the internet. Wrong and strong should never be acceptable.

Six words, who do you think you are, should be contemplated as self- reflection. When you know who you are, that should be exemplified in all that you do in the best and worst of times. Actions speak louder than words, but words are forever engraved in the annals of history.

When overindulgence in self-confidence and egotistical meanderings have exposed your inability to hold a position, you need to accept the reality, there is shame in your

game. When your success is grounded on demeaning the advancements of others to showcase yourself, allotting time delving into trivial pursuits of needless information to backup foolish accusations, there is a problem at hand.

This nation is in the throes of profound political and civil unrest and it is dangerous. Evil saturations of fear and terror are spread about without any discernment of the ramifications that come when the fire of hate is ignited in people waiting for the call. Stand back, stand by!

We are all seeking what is just and fair, but today we are witness to what happens when someone or a multitude of people believe they are above the

law of the land and God’s spiritual laws that govern the universe.

When you think you have the upper hand, it would be wise to look around and see who is holding up your hand. Eventually the truth will prevail and the hands of those who hung in there with you supporting the heartless policies of an administration that could have and should have done more will fall by the wayside and make space for hope and renewal to step up to the plate. This is the time to believe we can do better in this nation, because we know we deserve better than what we have been handed.

Rest In Peace Our Forever First Lady

chairperson of New York City’s Children’s Week.

But her primary concern was always increasing the literacy of New York’s children.

In 1990, she established “Reading is Recreation,” a program that brought public school students to Gracie Mansion which expanded to provide special assistance to additional schools located throughout the five boroughs. In recognition of her love for our city’s children, the Joyce B. Dinkins Children’s Collection was established at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture over a decade ago. The former First Lady was a member of the board of the New York Urban League, WNET/Channel 13, the Historic House Trust of New York City, Big Sisters, Inc., and the Early Stages Theater program.

She was also an honorary member of the Black Health Research Foundation, and a member of the New York Bench and Bar Spouses, Inc. Joyce Burrows Dinkins was a proud member of Howard University’s Alumni Association, and a life member of the NAACP. Known for their devotion to Harlem, the Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement dedicated the first green, affordable housing development in New York City as the Joyce and David Dinkins Gardens.

In 2018, the David & Joyce Dinkins Community Center was dedicated by the Riverton Tenants Association in honor of

the years that the Dinkins family proudly resided in that historic community. Joyce loved her years and friendships as a resident of Harlem and maintained lasting bonds with former neighbors.

Joyce B. Dinkins will always be known for her warm heart, love for her family, and dedication to New York City’s children. She had a contagious laugh, beautiful smile, generous spirit, and a heart of gold. In her role as First Lady, she carried herself with grace and dignity through a time of significant transition in New York City.

Long after her husband left office, she remained beloved by its citizens.

Her love reached beyond her family to touch her children’s lifelong friends, the residents of New York, and all those with whom she interacted.

Joyce B Dinkins peacefully transitioned from this life, at home in the company of her family, on October 11, 2020. A memorial service will be held sometime after the covid crisis ends. While our city will miss this incredible human being who personified grace, compassion, and love, her family will strive to honor her legacy.

Joyce B. Dinkins was predeceased by her parents, and her older sister, Gloria Burrows Sparks.

She is survived by her spouse and life partner, David N Dinkins; her children, David N Dinkins, Jr, and Donna Dinkins Hoggard; her daughter-in-law, Paula Bormes, son-in-law, Jay

Hoggard; grandchildren Jamal Hoggard, and Kalila Hoggard Anderson; grandson-in-law, Francois Anderson; sisterin-law, Joyce Dinkins Belton; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, god children, and beloved friends.

The Dinkins family thanks everyone for their comforting thoughts, prayers, and expressions of sympathy. oyce Burrows Dinkins, the youngest of two daughters of Daniel Burrows and Elaine Nelthrop Burrows, was born in 1930.

Daniel Burrows was a prominent entrepreneur and political figure in Harlem. Joyce was raised and educated in Harlem, and graduated from George Washington High School. She then attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1953.

At Howard, Joyce joined the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, and became the Homecoming Queen. She met her fellow student David N. Dinkins, and despite him being an Alpha Phi Alpha brother, they dated, fell in love, and married in 1953. Joyce became the anchor and heart of their life together, raising their two children – David Jr. and Donna, while working in various positions in the accounting field.

Prior to the election of her husband, as the 106th Mayor of New York City, (the first and only African American, thus far, to hold that office) Joyce was Coordinator of Metropolitan Affairs in the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

As First Lady of New York City, Joyce promoted education, health care and the arts for children.

She served as honorary chair of the Mayor’s Task Force on Child Abuse, chairperson of “The First Day Back to School” a multi-media service campaign, and honorary

Economy and Race Relations Seen as Growing Concerns Ahead of Election

s President Donald Trump flip-flops on whether he would back a new stimulus proposal to help stabilize America’s increasingly fragile financial, consumer and business markets — and provide a lifeline to struggling Americans — the latest Gallup poll reveals that the economy remains a major concern among voters ahead of the November 3 election. Nine in ten respondents identified the economy as extremely or very important to their vote The poll, released on October 5, listed national security and terrorism as the next biggest concern (83 percent), followed by education (82 percent), healthcare (80 percent), crime (79 percent), the COVID-19 response (77 percent), and race relations (76 percent).

Gallup has surveyed Americans’ “most important concerns” since 1939. The survey became monthly in 2001.

“It is not surprising that voters overall rate the economy as the most important issue impacting their vote for president this year given the fragile state of the U.S. economy and their tendency historically to prioritize it and other issues such as national security and education,” Gallup pollsters

observed.

In an earlier June 4 Gallup survey, 19 percent of Americans named race relations as the nation’s top problem in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

At just below 20 percent, Gallop’s June 4 demarcation of the nation’s pulse on the state of race and race relations in America reflects the largest number of Americans sharing concerns over the racial divide since the height of the civil rights struggle in July 1968. The July 1968 survey results were reported was less than 90 days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4th of the same year.

“Everything else being equal; however, the historical record predicts that race will eventually fall back into its latent status, scoring relatively few mentions as a top-of-mind issue,” Dr. Frank Newport, a Gallup senior scientist, wrote.

“This exemplifies the substantial challenge facing leaders who are seeking significant and lasting change in the nation’s race situation. The less top of mind race is as a major problem; presumably, the less likely politicians are going to feel pressure to take action.”

A separate poll conducted by the Washington, D.C.-based financial website, WalletHub, took a deep dive into which political party is best for the country.

The poll revealed that overall the economy had performed best under a Democratic presidency and Republican Congress.

In the past 70 years, the real Gross Domestic Product has grown fastest under Democratic control of both the executive and legislative branches of government, at an average of 4.22 percent per year, and most slowly under a Democratic presidency and divided Congress, at an average of 2.04 percent per year, the WalletHub survey found.

Despite Trump’s seeming obsession with the stock market, Wall Street has performed best under a Democratic presidency and Republican Congress. The S&P 500 produced an average annual return of 16.22 percent, and worst under a Republican presidency and Democratic Congress, with an average yearly return of 4.51 percent.

Further, as stimulus talks stall and Trump throws cold water on negotia-

tions, the annual unemployment rate change has had the highest decrease (0.85 percent, on average) under a Democratic presidency and divided Congress.

It had the highest increase (0.26 percent, on average) under a Republican presidency and Democratic Congress.

According to the survey, the annual poverty rate change has had the highest decrease (0.66 percent, on average) under a Democratic presidency and Republican Congress and the highest increase (0.05 percent, on average) under a Republican presidency and Democratic Congress.

The survey also found that the change in annual national debt as a percentage of GDP (adjusted for inflation) has had the highest decrease (0.76 percent, on average) under a Democratic presidency and Republican Congress and the highest increase (2.82 percent) under a Democratic presidency and divided Congress.

“I think [Democratic Presidential nominee] Joe Biden will be better for the economy for two reasons. First, he is actually listening to real economists, as far as policymaking is concerned,” said Shantanu Bagchi, a WalletHub expert and associate professor in the Department of Economics at Towson University in Maryland.

Housing Instability and COVID-19: New Help is on the Way (Statepoint)

T

he economic downturn caused by the pandemic has created widespread housing insecurity for both renters and homeowners.

However, advocates say that free and low-cost legal assistance and other support is helping people remain in their homes.

“The economic challenges caused by COVID-19 are putting a spotlight on the most vulnerable communities, which have been disproportionately affected by job losses, under-employment and housing instability,” says Eileen Fitzgerald, head of Housing Affordability Philanthropy with the Wells Fargo Foundation.

By the end of the year, up to 40 million U.S. renters may face eviction, according to re-

search from the Aspen Institute and the COVID-19 Eviction Defense Project. Black and Hispanic tenants represent 80 percent of those potentially facing eviction nationwide.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an eviction moratorium until the end of the year, tenants must still be proactive. Here are steps you can take to protect yourself, according to the National Housing Law Project: • Contact your landlord. As soon as you know you won’t be able to make a rent payment, contact your landlord.

• Gather documentation.

Retain all correspondence and receipts from your landlord.

Be sure to document phone calls and in-person conversations.

• Know assistance is available. Seek out community

services offering rental relief, food and health care. Visit www.Legalfaq.org to learn more about services available in your community.

• Seek legal assistance. An estimated 90 percent of landlords have legal representation, while only 10 percent of tenants do, according to Harvard researchers. This creates a glaring equity gap, as legal representation can make you more likely to avoid eviction.

Look into services providing free legal assistance and submit your declaration. The CDC moratorium requires tenants to file a federal declaration form to be eligible for the eviction protection.

What’s Being Done Fortunately, large-scale, multifaceted efforts are already underway to address the nationwide housing affordability crisis. As part of

its $175 million response to COVID-19, the Wells Fargo Foundation has provided over 1,200 grants to nonprofits, including funding grants to provide legal assistance for renters at risk for eviction.

Grants from the Foundation will allow 15 organizations that work to keep people and families housed through services and advocacy efforts to

expand their services.

Housing insecurity is an issue in communities beyond urban centers. According to Partners for Rural Transformation, of the 395 counties with persistent poverty in the U.S., eight out of 10 are rural and the majority of people living in them are people of color.

In response, the Wells Fargo Foundation has made grants

to community development financial institutions to help keep people housed in rural communities.

These efforts are part of the Wells Fargo Foundation’s $1 billion philanthropic commitment to address housing affordability solutions by 2025, which includes investing in strategies to advance housing stability, increase the supply of affordable homes and expand homeownership opportunities for people of color. s restaurants came out of the mandatory COVID lockdown, Harlem’s hospitality landscape, while badly shaken, was largely standing. The uptown dining landscape that had experienced significant growth over the past 10 - 15 years found that the community it served was willing and able to support it during challenging times. And as restaurants held on through the Summer and now enter the cold months, Harlem Restaurant Week returns for its 11th consecutive season as the only Restaurant Week Program in a New York City neighborhood this Fall. The program, which will take place from October 19th to 31st, is partially a celebration of this feat and a welcoming invitation to the rest of the city to see why this special village has such an enduring spirit.

Harlem Restaurant Week, created by Harlem Park to Park, is one of Harlem’s most successful marketing platforms for promoting its restaurant and retail businesses. The program, now in its 11th year, has helped significantly in raising awareness and visibility for the neighborhood’s many restaurants and retail concepts, while building ongoing support and followings for the variety of eateries found in Upper Manhattan. This year’s Harlem Restaurant Week takes on a deeper significance not only for its recognition of the restaurants that still remain and Harlem’s continued viability as a dining destination, 10

One of the most significant cultural capitals in the world, Harlem also happens to be home to one of New York City’s most bustling restaurant and dining scenes. Offering a cross-section of all that is current in the industry - from celebrity chefs and restaurateurs to pioneering entrepreneurs and a solid hub of nationally recognized blackowned businesses - Harlem has established itself as a premier hospitality

zone. And while most of the neighborhood’s owners and operators were hit hard by COVID at the onset, many were able to pivot and survive with positive outlooks for moving into the next phase of recovery.

“Harlem was definitely set back with COVID. We saw some permanent closures, like everywhere else, but we have also seen a level of ingenuity and resiliency emerge from our businesses that has been inspiring and trendsetting,” said Harlem Park to Park Executive Director, Nikoa Evans-Hendricks. Early pivot strategies included Harlem leading the charge in feeding healthcare frontline workers when local celebrity chef JJ Johnson’s FIELDTRIP began feeding hospitals in Upper Manhattan and gave way to other restaurants following

suit in Harlem and very quickly across the country. It was also where other such movements developed like the work Harlem Grown has done with feeding kids out of school and therefore at hunger risks; and Harlem Park to Park’s initiative of feeding furloughed hospitality workers with an ongoing grocery program; or Sylvia’s restaurant joining forces with Al Sharpton’s National Action Network to supply an open pantry. Harlem’s restaurants stepped up in so many ways to keep its neighbors safe and healthy during the worst of the outbreak.

But businesses also created pivot strategies that have allowed them to stay open or return.

From creating dedicated takeout and delivery windows as can be seen at Ruby’s Vintage with the new Sexy Taco popup;

to creating new products to be launched in retail as industry veterans like 67 Orange Street and Ponty Bistro are doing. “We have seen some restaurants able to accelerate their growth plans as a result of this situation, as others work hard to gain traction while the playing field is leveled,” added Evans-Hendricks.

Diners will be able to enjoy Harlem staple favorites like Red Rooster, which also recently reopened for indoor and outdoor dining, but also newer instant classics like Chai Wali and Mountainbird, both of which initially closed but opened this summer. The neighborhood’s many black-owned restaurants give it one of the highest concentrations of these businesses in the country.

In addition, despite the downturn, several newer restaurants opened or

reached early milestones during COVID. Places like Lyn-Genet’s Kitchen, in West Harlem serving vegan fare. Harlem is also home to some of the city’s most sprawling sidewalks, making outdoor seating and social distance spreading more accessible; it enjoys closed streets along Frederick Douglass Blvd each weekend to compliment the city’s extended outdoor dining program; and during restaurant week, an open street program organized by Uptown Grand Central on Pleasant Avenue at 118th Street in East Harlem will feature a popup of local favorites in Bistro Casa Azul including Mountainbird and Fonda Boricua, among others.

“We are certainly not out of the woods and much more help is needed for this industry to fully return. But what we’ve learned is that being a part of a community has its privileges. The community has worked with us each step of the way to help support our businesses. Our numbers are down for participants - at a little over 60 participants, we are 25% down from the spring pre-COVID HRW program. However, we are also hearing from restaurants that they are inching closer to preCOVID numbers, which is encouraging as we enter the colder months.

Even more encouraging is seeing how businesses have emerged for growth from the shutdown and we want to support that trajectory as they navigate these new waters,” Evans-Hendricks added.

Disparities in Triple Negative Breast Cancer Rutgers Cancer Inst. Expert Explains Triple Negative Breast Cancer Among African American Women

T

riple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a subtype of breast cancer that is aggressive by nature with a complex biology.

Studies have shown a high prevalence of triple-negative breast cancer among younger African American women and those of African descent. Coral Omene, MD, PhD, medical oncologist at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey whose clinical expertise focuses on triple negative breast cancer and other forms of breast cancer, translational research and clinical trials, shares more on this topic.

What is triple negative breast cancer?

TNBC does not possess the estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and human epidermal growth factor 2 receptor. Most

breast cancers are classified by these three proteins, which guides treatment management. Since triple-negative breast cancer does not have any of these receptors, it tends to be more challenging to treat. Women with TNBC have a high frequency of metastasis to the lungs, liver and brain leading to poor survival. Compared to other subtypes of breast cancer, there has been a lack of effective therapies, resulting in a poor prognosis. This is particularly true for young African American women and women of African descent.

Not only is there a higher prevalence of TNBC in these women, they tend to present at a more advanced stage.

Notably, compared with other subtypes, they have

different risk factors for this disease. For instance, younger age, premenopausal status, having more children, not breastfeeding or shorter duration of breast feeding, and obesity are all risk factors. Interestingly, most of these are typically the opposite of the risk factors associated with developing breast cancer. The increased risk for this population as well as for women of African descent (in particular from West Africa and sub-Saharan Africa) suggests genetic components of geographically defined African ancestry may be associated with hereditary susceptibility for specific patterns of breast cancer development. There are multiple factors besides presenting to the clinic at a more advanced stage that contribute to worse

clinical outcomes for African American women with this disease. They include health care access barriers, one or more underlying medical conditions, income disparities and experiences of societal inequality.

There has been ongoing research in this area at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey from multiple investigators. To highlight a few areas of personal interest, I have been working on a translational project modifying

the risk for developing triple negative breast cancer in a TNBC mouse model.

Currently, in collaboration with several researchers at Rutgers Cancer Institute, I am investigating the alterations in the genomic landscape of African American Women with TNBC and investigating the association of obesity in these women and responses to therapy. I am also a member of the Center for Cancer Health Equity in partnership with the Rutgers School

of Public Health which works to evaluate clinical trial enrollment, address catchment area burden and foster catchment area and disparities research.

It is essential that we understand the potential molecular mechanism(s) by which biology and disparities may interconnect to result in aggressive TNBC development in African American women. This may lead to the development of models that determine specific risk, increase access to early detection, care and clinical trial participation, in addition to the implementation of health policies to eliminate disparities.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer Survivor: My Story

from being depressed to “battle mode.” I now had to fight for my life. Some people choose to keep their illness private.

I chose to share mine with family, friends, collegues and readers.

This was scary, this “triple negative” and I knew that I needed as much help as I could get. As I said I was in some kind of depression so my health insurance, rent and everything was behind. As I reached out and people asked how they could help, I was motivated to start a gofundme.

The fact that more than 180 individuals and organizations reached out with donations and many just personally handed me checks, was remarkable to me. Within a month, my rent was paid up, my health insurance paid up and I was ready to go on the cancer treatment journey with chemo and surgery for 5 months.

Because I also suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, I could not afford any type of infection, as the chemo drained my immune system, so I quarantined myself from everyone except the couple of people who were

assisting me at the time. I don’t know how I would have made it through without the help. My son, Dominic was there for anything I needed him to do. My friends Thelma Russell and Maria Caveghni went to every doctors appointment and chemo treatment with me.

There are so many tests you have to take before and during treatment.

Thelma would come with her note book and then call me in advance to make sure I did not miss any appointment. Maria would wait for hours with me (it took 3-5 hours for each chemo prep and treatment). My sister Lil Nickelson stepped in and pulled the paper together each week

for me to get it to the printer. After chemo, many days I was only able to get together enough strength to get out of bed and go to the bathroom. I was told I was given the strongest chemo (nickname “red devil”). It literally turns your urine orange right away. My cousins Tony and Laura Rogers gave me ki-energy treatments every week prior to my chemo treatment and Laura, who is a holistic practitioner, gave me some holistic products to help with my side affects and to build up my body which, the chemo was tearing down.

My doctors told me I did better with side affects than many.

It is now 3 years later and I remain cancer-free. However, cancer-free does not mean symptom-free.

Chemotherapy changes many cells in your body, especially it seems with your hands and feet.

Yes all my nails on my hands and feet turned Black. The color came back over time (almost a year), however I continue to have neuropathy in both hands and feet. I am not complaining, just saying.

Many people believe when you say you are cancer-free that you are all healed back to normal. I feel “Blessed.” I have learned to slow down and enjoy life – one day at a time. Being quarantined during COVID-19 brought

back memories of my days on chemo being quarantined at home. However, since I already had that experience I believe it was easier for me than many. I am now being called on by women diagnosed with breast cancer for advice. I am happy to share all that I know.

One thing I want to share – if you are diagnosed with “triple negative” you want an oncologist who has experience with “triple negative.” My oncologist and team is at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Ricki Farley has started a non-profit to address cancer in Black Women – TOUCH. I was also blessed to have spoken to Ricki Farley extensively when I was diagnosed and she guided me with the right questions to ask and how to research the right oncologist. It was because I reached out and made my diagnosis public that I was introduced to Ricki, who also is a triple-negative breast cancer survivor.

hen Donald Trump said getting COVID-19 was “A Blessing,” I first said to myself there he goes again saying something outrageous. However, as I thought about it further, I believe my diagnosis and treatment of Triple Negative Breast Cancer has been “A Blessing” in my life.

It was after I was diagnosed that I learned that “triple negative” is an aggressive form of breast cancer that primarily affects African-American women. My diagnosis came at a time in my life when I was in the midst of a very stressful event and I believe at the time I was probably suffering from some kind of depression. I agree with Ricki Farley and believe my onset of breast cancer may have been triggered by stress. So now that I was diagnosed, my bigger nightmare was having a mastectomy, since I am also diabetic. Being diabetic, every cut takes much longer to heal on me.

I remember having a tooth extracted and it was six months for that area to heal.

So my diagnosis and treatment in 2017 quickly launched me

icki Farley had a thriving marketing agency in Atlanta, GA. The services of the successful Dartmouth College graduate were highly sought after by clients who included the likes of former U.S. President Barack Obama.

“I was your typical Superwoman of the world,” recalled Farley who was 55 at the time.

“A black woman trying to take care of everyone.

I was on four planes a week. I was the breadwinner for my family, and my baby daughter was in China. I put off my mammogram checkup until she came home from school.

“Once she came home, I went to see my doctor. The doctor found a lump. It was the size of a peanut and under my nipple. Literally as I was walking out the doctor’s office, I was told to come back the next day for a mammogram. I did. They made me wait while they did additional films.”

Farley, who is now 63, says what came next

would forever change her life.

“I was told I needed to get a biopsy,” said Farley who grew up in Silver Spring, MD. “I was going on a business trip and literally I was on the phone with my doctor.

The doctor told me I had breast cancer. Not just breast cancer, but Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

I was also told there was no good treatment and I would die. She gave me two years to live.”

According to the American Cancer Society, once a breast cancer diagnosis has been made using imaging tests and a biopsy, the cancer cells will be checked for certain features. If the cells do not have estrogen or progesterone receptors, and also do not make much of the HER2 protein, the cancer is considered to be Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC).

“I went home to the breast cancer world,” said Farley. “I had a double-mastectomy by choice, and radiation.

The doctor said I was metastatic and that I

“I went through chemo, and had implants,” said Farley. “I was making radio ads for Obama while on chemo. I couldn’t let it rain on my parade. I had too much work to do.”

What came next prompted Farley’s doctor to call the grandmother of two, ‘her miracle patient.’

“The cancer is gone, and we don’t know why,” said Farley. “I feel blessed everyday to be here. I remember saying, ‘God we made it. Now what?’ I made up my mind to be an advocate.”

Farley serves as the

vice president of Strategic Partnerships and National Programs for Sisters Network Inc. She is building a movement to address breast cancer in black women, with the goal of reducing the population’s mortality rate. She serves on the Board of Trustees for the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation where she spearheads the Marketing Committee and directs multicultural outreach.

She also is an Ambassador for TRODELVY, the first antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of adult patients with metastatic TNBC who received at least two prior therapies for metastatic disease.

Farley calls other woman diagnosed with TNBC her “Breasties.”

“I know God left me here for this work. I tell my Breasties to ‘fight like a girl.’ Now, we have a new way to fight, which is an awesome blessing. TROD- ELVY is a tool in our once empty toolbox.”

Developed by Immunomedics, TRODELVY is for people whose cancer has spread and does not respond to other treatments. The FDA announced it fasttracked its approval process to help these ‘atrisk’ patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

TRODELVY combines three components:

an antibody, to direct delivery of the cancer-killing therapy; a linker, which joins the antibody and anti-cancer drug; and an anti-cancer drug, which is most often a chemotherapy drug.

“Triple Negative Breast Cancer is such a horrible disease, but for black women, its about ten percent of breast cancers and we die so quickly. I am so proud to be a part of the TRODELVY family. I have met women in clinical trials, and they are living their best lives.”

Farley said she cut out the “cancers in her life.” She sold her house, let her business go, and moved back to Maryland.

“I believe my breast cancer was caused by stress. I had to learn I was creating the contention around me.”

Farley holds an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, is the President Emeritus of the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association, and writes regularly for BlackDoctor.org.

“I feel blessed to be alive and see my daughter graduate from college,” said Farley. “We as black women, wear this crazy cape we don’t take off. We put everyone before us and it’s killing us. I paddle board as much as I can, and I have a dance party every morning. You have to find an outlet everyday to give yourself peace.”

The Anatomy Of A Breast Cancer Survivor: ‘Early Detection Saved My Life’

received a life-changing phone call July 11, 2019. I remember it vividly. I was sitting in the bathroom, nervous to receive the test results of a regular mammogram, 3-D mammogram (which I didn’t know existed), breast ultrasound and a very uncomfortable and slightly painful biopsy of an almond-sized lump in my right breast that I’d discovered through self-examination.

“I’m sorry, Lyndsay, it’s breast cancer,” affirmed the radiologist.

I cried. My life would change forever. Triple-negative breast cancer, stage 2B, an aggressive form of the chronic illness more common in Black women who are diagnosed. Statistics show Black women younger than 40 have higher rates of breast cancer compared to white women. We also tend to be diagnosed at a younger age than white women. Facts. I’m one of them.

Everything I had worked so hard to build in New York City as a media personality came to a screeching halt. All of the hard work, and so close to that big break, then boom.

To be honest, I needed a break from the hustle and bustle. Of course, a vacation in the Maldives would’ve been my preference, but my health needed my critical attention.

I hopped on a one-way flight home to Houston for a consultation with the best breast surgeon, Dr. Jamie Terry, a brilliant, Black physician, believer and family friend. She was the captain of the ship who orchestrated an incredible team of medical professionals–Dr. Kemi Nurudeen (fertility specialist), Dr. Gurjyot Doshi (oncologist), and Dr. Sean Boutros (plastic surgeon). Then, the

overwhelming journey of treatment and multiple surgeries began. It was hard to process, but I strapped on the armor of God and prepared for battle.

I froze the remaining eggs in my (aged) ovaries before powering through 15 arduous rounds of chemotherapy over a series of four months.

I was poked and prodded with needles and IVs more than I could count. The medicine pumped through my body through a port inserted underneath my skin below my left clavicle. It made me extremely drowsy and fatigued.

However, I maintained a very healthy appetite and guzzled Ensure vanilla for its nutrients, which was my grandmother Wade Ella’s favorite.

I knew she was with me, in spirit, every step of the way.

Dr. Terry confirmed that I would indeed lose every strand of hair from chemo, so I proactively shaved it off so I wouldn’t have to deal with the emotional trauma of hair loss.

Thankfully, the chemotherapy melted away the cancerous breast tumor within a few rounds. I learned that chemo doesn’t know which cells to attack, so it fights bad and good cells. This attributes to those awful side effects including hair loss, darkening of finger nails, etc. I later found out, it destroyed my ovaries.

(More on that in part 3 of the ‘Anatomy of a SurThriver’ series) Over the course of those intense four months, I rocked custom lace front wigs designed by my uber-talented hairstylist, Brittany, to hide my bald head. Believe it or not, I had the strength to take Zumba and boxing classes. I was adamant about staying active as much as my body could endure. I was determined to fight the c-word and

knock it out. Symbolically, I rang the bell two days shy of ringing in 2020 — entering a new year having successfully completed treatment. I proudly wore a figurative heavyweight champion belt around my 28-inch waist.

I learned during treatment that I was born with a BRCA 1 gene mutation that puts me at a higher risk for breast and ovarian cancers. My own DNA added another rather complicated layer to my journey. Dr. Terry said at some point in my life I would’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer. Thank God it was detected early and could result in a positive prognosis. I call myself the Black Angelina Jolie. You may recall the former Mrs. Brad Pitt, who has a family history of both cancers, opted for a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy (surgery to remove one or both breasts to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer) and hysterectomy at age 37 as preventive measures.

In February 2020, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy with breast reconstruction. In a tag-team procedure, Dr. Terry removed my breast tissue; then Dr. Boutros placed in tissue expanders (temporary placeholder, implant-like objects that stretch the skin). I woke up from surgery with a faux chest! I left the hospital the next day with four drains tethered to each side of my

body. I lived with those darn things for two months. The healing process took about six weeks, and to be honest, it wasn’t too bad. Upper body movement was limited for the first two weeks – I couldn’t push, pull, sit up, scoot in a chair nor shower without help. When I was finally able to lift my arms over my head, I cheered. Some days I woke up helpless in tears, but I woke up. Some days I danced to Beyoncé.

On Valentine’s Day, I received a life-changing phone call. This time, I cried tears of joy. Dr. Terry said, “Your scans from surgery came back all clear, there’s no sign of cancer!” Praise God! My upcoming April birthday would be a celebration of rebirth. I set-up my ring light, beat my face, put some gel in my chemo curls and facilitated my own photo shoot in the living room with my iPhone. Come on now, self-photography!

Months laters, my fantastic, faith-filled plastic surgeon, Dr. Boutros, would perform the exchange surgery to replace the tissue expanders for breast implants. I felt like a woman again. I’m over the hump now and oh so grateful to God for removing the toxins from my body. God aligned the people, medical professionals and resources to get me to the finish line of victory and I am here to cheer on my fellow “breasties.” My

therapist reminds me that I experienced a traumatic (health) experience, and that’s true.

I’m focused now on healing my mind, body and spirit. The journey continues.

A lot of people didn’t know what I was going through, and I was okay with that. I didn’t look like what I was going through because of God’s grace. When faced with a chronic illness, sharing can be emotionally draining. It caused me to relive that phone call over and over. I wasn’t ready to bare my soul, until now.

The diagnosis strengthened me in so many ways and has dramatically changed my perspective on life. I appreciate the simple things I took for granted – each breath, whiff of fresh air, the sun and trees.

Will I be able to breastfeed my children? No. Will I have to visit the doctor more frequently for the rest of my life?

Yes. That’s okay. I’m alive!

I’m grateful for it all and I proudly proclaim my crown as a SurTHRIVER! I created this platform to inform, inspire and empower women around breast cancer awareness via my testimony and the testimonies of other amazing SurTHRIVERS. Advocate for a 3-D ultrasound which will offer a more comprehensive picture and analysis of your breast tissue. Confirm with your health provider if it’s covered or if it will require an out-of-pocket fee. If breast cancer runs in your family, schedule a genetic evaluation. Knowledge is power. Early detection saved my life and my mission in life is to help save yours.

What to do if you’re diagnosed with breast cancer Breathe, pray and trust God. When I was first diagnosed and trying to figure everything out, I discovered hundreds of resources available via nonprofit organizations and groups – free wigs, gift cards for groceries, medicine assistance and so much more. There are centers that offer financial assistance, too, which can be helpful especially to women who aren’t able to work during treatment.

This year’s event will take place from Monday October 19th to Saturday October 31st and could

not have come at a better time.

Harlem Restaurants have had an exceedingly difficult time due the COVID lock down. Recently the Mayor and Governor have agreed to allow many of the New York City restaurants to have indoor dining on a limited basis. The City will allow ongoing sidewalk and curbside dining which will become a challenge during the coming winter.

It’s the best thing to do – not just for them, but for you. Everybody’s happy when you work together because it makes the task a little easier, and learning is better when you teach one another as you go. Helping others is right on point and, in the new book “Bunheads”

by Misty Copeland, illustrated by Setor Fiadzigbey, it’s more fun, too.

Everyone was really excited when Miss Bradley made her announcement at the beginning of dance class. She said they were going to perform the ballet Coppélia, a tale of a toymaker, a beautiful doll, a boy named Franz, and his jealous girlfriend,

Swanilda. It was a dramatic tale and little Misty couldn’t wait to dance that ballet.

This, in fact, would be her first big dance and she very much wanted to be Swanilda. But before she could do that, she had to try out for the role, just like all the other girls in ballet class. There were a lot of different dances to know and she’d have to do them all perfectly, from the easy développé to tendu front, to the very hard-todo pas de bourrée. Misty’d never danced like that before, but as Miss Bradley called Misty and a girl named Cat up to the front of the room, she said Misty was “very good.”

Which brings us to the meat of this book: even the title, referring to hairstyle, is for little ballet dancers.

Pure and simple, it’s for kids who twirl and tippy-toe and jeté through the house, kids who first-position without even thinking about it, kids who’d wear a tutu in the tub, if they could. Author Misty Copeland speaks directly to their hearts with authenticity, and she addresses any ballet-diva behavior your little one might have by showing that competition is good but learning from the competition is better.

Non-dancers may appreciate this adorable book, but it’ll be so much more meaningful for little ballet stars or ballet fans, boys or girls, ages 3 to 7. If that barre is already set for your child, “Bunheads” is en pointe.
