GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE!

Hope you and your family had a safe and joyful Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving had a special meaning for me this year, since it was last year this time that I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I completed months of chemo, then surgery in July. In August, the surgeon said all cells removed were “cancer free.” My energy level began to return in September and now I am dealing with some minor fallout from chemo such as waiting for my hair to grow back and neuropathy in my hands and feet. However, I am so thankful I have gotten to smell all my flowers while I am here. I am thankful to have found out that I have surrounded myself with some fabulous people who have been there for me. I have affirmation that I am living my life right and that I am on the right journey that god has planned for me. I am so blessed to have been able to feel the overwhelming support and love that I received during my treatment. At my weakest point I felt the many prayers that help to keep me strong.

I am so thankful this day and every day. You know who you are and I thank you for showing up for me.

THE NATIONAL JAZZ MUSEUM IN HARLEM’S ‘UPTOWN IN AUTUMN’ FALL BENEFIT CONCERT RAISES OVER $50,000 FOR YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMMING

enefit Featured Performances by Pianist Marc Cary, Blues Singer Guy Davis, and Saxophonist Ron Blake with Special Appearance by Jazz Legends Randy Weston and Reggie Workman On Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at the historic Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem (NJMH) hosted its Third Annual Fall Benefit Concert,

Uptown in Autumn that was attended by nearly 400 guests, and successfully met its goal of raising over $50,000 for the organization’s year-round free jazz concerts and education program offerings.

The one-night-only celebration featured celebrated blues singer and W.C. Handy Award-winner Guy Davis performing harmonica and 6- and 12-string guitar selections including Davis’ original Kokomo Kid, and other selec-

tions that paid homage to blues greats Sonny Terry, and Leadbelly. The audience was also treated to a special duo performance by jazz legends Randy Weston on piano and Reggie Workman on bass. The evening ended with a performance by pianist and composer Marc Cary leading a band comprising drummer Ronnie Burrage, saxophonist Ron Blake and bassist, Curtis Lundy.

Also, as part of the evening’s program, the National

Jazz Foundation in Harlem’s Board Chair, Tim Porter, paid tribute to the organization’s outgoing Managing Director, Jasna Radonjic, under whose leadership over the past four and a half years the organiza-

tion achieved unprecedented growth. Radonjic and Porter were presented with an official proclamation from the office of Congressman Adriano Espaillat, (13th District) in recognition of the important work and critical programming that NJMH has brought to the Harlem community.

In addition, Porter announced that the National Jazz Museum in Harlem has appointed a new Executive Director, Tracy Hyter-Suffern,

Blick Art Materials Opens on 125th Street

lick Art Materials celebrated their grand opening in Harlem on Thursday, November 16, 2017, at 261 West 125th Street, right next door to the Apollo Theater with four days of opening celebrations that took place at the store from November 16-19 with free giveaways and fun-filled art-centric activities.

The store manager, Kris Cox, was raised on 116th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue and is still a Harlem resident who took music classes as a child at the Harlem School of Arts (HSA). What a full circle moment he experienced when he was able to give back to an institution that nurtured him in his youth when his employer donated three rooms of art materials and a $2,000 check to HSA for Steve Prince’s exhibition at the arts institution. The store employs 18 employees on a

The mural on the wall as you enter the store was created by the assistant manager of the Long Island store. Even this location’s manager Kris is an artist in his own right and one of his works is up on the wall near the register on the lower level. The store is accessible to the disabled via the elevator. The store will have ongoing art demonstrations and they would love for neighborhood artists to come in and talk about demonstrating in the store.

t has come to my attention that many prospective firsttime buyers are under a terrible misconception. They believe that by attending the Home Buyer Education Workshop, they will automatically qualify them for the Home First Down Payment Assistance program offered through New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

This program can provide a first-time home buyer with approximately 6% of the purchase price up to $25,000 that can be used for either down payment or closing costs. But you must meet all of eligibility requirements, which are: (1) be a first-time home buyer; (2) buy in New York City; (3) complete the home buying workshop;

(4) meet the household size and income guidelines; (5) use an authorized lender; and (6) the purchase price does not exceed the maximum limits.

This program recently increased the income limits to 120% of the area medium income (AMI). You can go the www.nyc.gov/hpd to see the new income guidelines. Now, more first-time buyers will qualify for this grant program. However, the problem remains the same. There is still a shortage of available affordable properties in Harlem.

Most low to moderate income buyers become frustrated over the lack of affordable housing in the area.

You must push beyond these hurdles to make homeownership a reality. Do not make excuses for not buying. You will need an

adequate amount of money saved and a solid credit history to qualify for a mortgage.

You must remain positive throughout the homebuying process. Save more money. Reduce your spending. Be ready to take advantage of an opportunity when it comes. If you have a strong desire to become a homeowner, you can make it happen!

You must have the perseverance to create a better quality of life for yourself and your family.

You must complete the home buying process. Let nothing get in your way!

n what has become an “enjoyable tradition during the holiday season” (The New York Times), Ballet Hispánico in collaboration with the Apollo Theater makes its annual return to the Apollo stage on December 1 and 2, 2017, led by Eduardo Vilaro. Three inspiring works reflect on the migrant experience, the tragedy of marginalization and the resilience and triumph of the human spirit to capture contemporary Latino culture through movement. The performances are sponsored by support from Goya Foods.

Award-winning choreographer Ronald K. Brown’s Espiritu Vivo (2012) explores the intersection of the African and Latino diasporas in the Caribbean and Latin America. Incorporating narrative, tradition, and dance forms from these regions, the work explores the stages of grief after tragedy, leading to the

final step of hope for the future.

Choreographer Ramon Oller’s Bury Me Standing (1998) was inspired by the unique culture of the Gypsy or “Roma” people, a marginalized community that has journeyed across continents for thousands of years. Finally, Con Brazos Abiertos (2017), choreographed by Michelle Manzanales, is an exploration of iconic Mexican symbols that she was reluctant to embrace as a Mexican-American child growing up in Texas. Intertwining folkloric details with a distinct voice, set to music that ranges

from Julio Iglesias to rock en Español, the piece is a fun and frank look at a life caught between two cultures.

Her fabulous arrangements of famous jazz standards like ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ and ‘I love you Porgy’ took the audience to another level. Blending in a very personal style Broadway tunes and lyrics with her own lyrics and jazz, Suzanne revisited all its forms: traditional, free, bi-bop, swing, blues. After the show I was thrilled to be able to interview her.

I was trying to put a label on her genre but I couldn’t.

So, my first question was: ‘How would you describe your music?’ “Jazz is a very personal and intimate form

of music. Most jazz standards are Broadway shows or film tunes, so it was very easy to find repertoire for the Feinstein concert. Jazz music is defined by its swing, rhythms and having an element of the blues. All of these elements are present in my music, so I am a jazz singer and composer. As a jazz vocalist the approach to the music is all about having a shared intimate experience with your audience from a very personal place. Though jazz has fragmented from Swing to Bebop, to hard Bop to Modern, Fusion, etc. it is still jazz as long as there are elements of improvisation, blues and swing. It’s good to give the jazz greats a nod so I have incorporated

elements like the vocalese into my arrangements. With the concert, From Broadway to Bop. I used specific jazz arranging techniques to tie into the Broadway show tunes. There are many styles of jazz, but I would say that my music might be a bit closer to straight ahead jazz.”

‘You said that “as a brown little girl growing up in the projects, “The Sound of Music” was your favorite film. Why? And how/ when did you approach jazz?

“The Sound of Music” was my favorite film growing up because like Maria, I was trying to escape my circumstances. Jazz has always lived inside of me. It just took me a while to find my way to my sound and my

own unique way to voice my music. My journey to jazz formally began when I enrolled in the masters of music program at The Manhattan School of Music in 2013.

The jazz program there, while challenging, made me grow up as a person and a musician in so many ways.”

I found Suzanne’s approach to music so personal that I then asked her to tell young artists

who are doubting the choices they are making how she found her very unique, beautiful sound and path.

n conjunction with partners, Shining Service Worldwide, Stand Beside Them, Women Veterans Interactive and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, L’Oréal USA hosted

and celebrated 50 active-duty women U.S. military personnel and veterans along with their family members for a day of beauty education and services branded “Have a BEAUTIFUL

Day.” The day included hair, makeup and manicure consultations and services offered by 42 volunteer professionals as well as motivational and informative messages from keynote

speakers Lindsay Gutierrez, Ms. Veteran America 2017 and Jordanna Mallach, Special Programs and Outreach Coordinator, New York State Division of Veterans Affairs.

The guests heard from both L’Oréal USA’s Veterans Think Tank and members of its Talent Recruitment team about opportunities at the company.

“Have a BEAUTIFUL Day” kicked off with breakfast at

Terminal Warehouse followed by the women being greeted at L’Oréal USA headquarters by a gauntlet of more than 100 American flag-waving employees lining the lobby.

L’Oréal executives Cecilia Nelson, AVP of Diversity & Inclusion and David Greenberg, President, Professional Products Division, welcomed the service women to its headquarters.

L’Oréal USA is committed to hiring veterans and “Have a BEAUTIFUL Day” is one of the strategic initiatives of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion designed to impact the workplace and marketplace. The event seeks to raise awareness of the needs of active-duty and veteran U.S. military personnel and to provide unique, direct programs to make beauty accessible to them.

On the evening of Wednesday, November 15, 2017 customers got the opportunity to purchase a ticket to Macy’s Newport Centre Mall store in Jersey City, NJ and get a seat for Chef Marcus’ table side talk in the Home Department, received a $10 Macy’s gift card, a $10 Marcus B & P gift card and a copy of his latest book, “The Rooster Cookbook: The Story of Food and Hustle in Harlem.” In addition, Chef Marcus would sign the book and take a picture with each customer.

Chef Marcus shared so much with the audience regarding his process of opening new restaurants, menu selection process and we sampled several items on Marcus B & P’s menu.

It took him about three and half years to work on his concept for the Newark location.

His first step was the research what was there before such as the types of cultures and cuisines that were offered in the area previously. Marcus B&P, located at 56 Halsey Street, opened on Friday, November

17, 2017 in the newly renovated Hahne & Co. Building. The space preserves architectural features such as several grand staircases, original woodwork

and brick work and elaborate wrought-iron banisters. The space will also feature a rotating selection of art from New Jersey artists.

Newark residents make up 80% of the restaurant’s team.

He expanded the discussion to include asking the audience about their Thanksgiving menus and offering tips to

audience members’ questions.

Before the book signing and picture taking, guests went to five stations set up to sample Marcus B & P menu items such as Deviled Egg, Shrimp & Crab Fritter, Cornbread Madeline with Honey Butter, Gianduja Cookie and another round of the Lemon Herb Tonic with Berbere Spice Cocktail that was served to the audience before Chef Marcus started his talk. It was all delicious and I’ve already contacted my friends that live in Newark about setting a date to visit Marcus B & P.

pproximately 43.3 million foreign-born people live in the United States, which includes 20.7 million naturalized U.S. citizens and 22.6 million noncitizens. Of the noncitizens, 13.1 million are lawful permanent residents, 11.1 million are unauthorized migrants, and 1.7 million hold temporary visas. There were 11.3 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2016. Six states account for 59% of unauthorized immigrants: California, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey and Illinois.

What does it mean to live as an undocumented immigrant?

Undocumented Immigrants Live in Fear.

Undocumented immigrants are often forced to live

a passive and secluded life that oppresses them in many ways. The constant horror of deportation lingers in their minds, and they live in constant fear of law enforcement and government authorities.

Some states do grant eligibility for state financial aid to undocumented students who qualify for in-state tuition. Most private scholarship funds and foundations require applicants to be U.S. citizens or legal residents, but there are some that do not.

In spite of the commercialization, it is one of the few times when you can still count on seeing the delight and awe of the season through the eyes of a young child. It is a time when memories are made. Everything sparkles; the twinkling lights on the Christmas tree, the gleaming
