Harlem kicked off the holiday season last Thursday, Nov 16th and 125th Street will shine brightly through the holiday season.. There were activities throughout the day ending with the parade of floats. (see pages 12-13) The Knicks participated in the “spirit of giving” this holiday season by giving away turkeys in Harlem. (see page 4) We will cover the tradition of giving turkeys and meals this Thanksgiving week and will present in next week’s issue.

Remember to shop with small businesses in your community on “Small Business Saturday,“ November 25th. as well as throughout this holiday season.

We continue to mourn the passing of fellow publisher Walter Smith. In this issue we have some more condolences and messages. The funeral will take place on Dec 1st in Miami Florida. More details on page 18.

Knicks give away turkeys for Thanksgiving in Harlem

M

ichael Beasley, Doug McDermott, and Jarrett Jack of the New York Knicks, along with The Garden of Dreams Foundation and Papa John’s were on hand to spread holiday cheer in Harlem on Tuesday, November 14, 2017. The three players were at Children’s Aid Society- Dunlevy Milbank Center at 14-32 West 118th Street in Harlem to host a pizza party and to donate 165 turkeys to families, courtesy of Hain Celestial.

The Knicks players, families, and children were entertained by face painters, caricaturists and board games. We captured an intense game of Connect Four between McDermott and a child. We spoke to McDermott after the event about the game and his experience in Harlem.

“You know what? I actually

got beat and I was taking it real serious,” McDermott said when asked about the game of Connect Four. “You can tell his brain was a little more warmed up. He had been playing a few games.

He’s reminded me about it a few times already.”

Jack also suffered a loss to one of the Harlem students.

“I broke even actually,” Jack said. “I won the first one actually, and then the kid got me on the second one. But it was fun though.”

The three Knickerbockers also shared their experience giving out turkeys in Harlem.

Michael Beasley said it was “fun, a great feeling to say the least just to see the kids and their families have fun for an hour.”

“It’s been great, being around the kids and their families, just being able to bring a smile to everyone’s face,” McDermott said. “We’re on a pret-

ty big platform, playing for the Knicks so just to be able to give back to the people who watch us and support us, it means everything to us.”

For Jack, it inspired memories from his youth.

“It was great. Me and my brother used to joke about that all the time, no NBA player, no rapper, no nothing ever came to where we were from,” Jack said.

“I still consider myself a very

regular dude, I do regular things, I go ‘regular places’ so I’m like man, if we can make and impact and try to instill a giving back mentality at a young age to these kids, I think that’s an amazing thing.”

Finally, I asked the players what thoughts came to mind when I said Thanksgiving.

“Just growing up in Iowa, being a younger kid, getting all of my cousins together, going

to my grandparent’s house, just being around my family really,” McDermott said. “But I think this kind of stuff is up there too, being able to be in a city like New York City and come back and give back to all these kids, it’s been amazing.”

“Family, the food part it just the complimentary thing,” Jack said. “If I had my family all around me and no food, it would be much better than having all

the food and no family. The food is just like a gathering thing, it kind of helps with the vibe of it all. But the family portion, the stories, the teamwork in putting together the meal, I think that’s all the best parts of it.”

Beasley responded with what might have been my answer, short and sweet.

“Macaroni and cheese,” he exclaimed.

It is always great to see these professional athletes give back to our communities, the communities that helped shape them.

The New York Knicks and Garden of The Dreams Foundation do an excellent job at it.

Finally, as a product of the Harlem public school system myself, I would like this opportunity to trash talk on behalf of the kids: at Connect Four, Children’s Aid Society- Dunlevy Milbank Center two wins, the New York Knicks one!

rtCrawl Harlem Partners with Harlem Tourism Board to Present A Seasonal Spectacle - Harlem Holiday Windows 2017 with two special events on Wednesday, November 29 at 6pm and Saturday, December 2 at noon.

Expert guides and staged dance, music, spoken-word and rap vignettes will creatively engage, educate and promote community and cultural pride.

Participating businesses along a sparkle-filled Lenox Avenue between 117th and 127th Streets will unveil displays inspired by seven Traditional Harlem Celebrations that take place throughout the year: Three Kings Day, Christmas, Hanukah, Loisa, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, and Harlem Week, creating a spectacle to behold.

This year’s theme was sug-

gested by high school students from The Schomburg Center’s immersive Teen Curator’s Program and executed by undergraduates from Fashion Institute of Technology’s interdisciplinary Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design (VPED) program, working closely with owners/operators and store managers. Additional Lenox Avenue businesses, including Corner Social (“boasting a bar where everybody knows your name,” according to the Michelin Guide) will feature the designs of local artists, curated by OmoMisha.

“Because Harlem is such a melting pot of cultures, we honor and celebrate all of our residents and businesses this season,” said Jacqueline Orange, founder of ArtCrawl Harlem. “Harlem Holiday Windows 2017 visually tells the story of Harlem through its varied celebrations. For the

third year in a row, breathtaking windows will offer an informative and festive holiday experience for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Harlem Holiday Windows is all the holiday inspiration anyone could possibly want.”

Participating businesses include: Grandma’s Place in Harlem, 84 W 120th Street Harlem Coffee Company, 151 Lenox Avenue Harlem Haberdashery, 245 Lenox Avenue Harlem Shake,100 W 124th Street Settepani Restaurant,196 Lenox Avenue Valerie Signature Salon, 163 Lenox Avenue Whole Foods Market, 100 W 125th Street The launch events will integrate information sessions at

each stop. They will be led by Harlem historians at each stop, with pop-up performances and exclusive electrifying elements along Lenox Avenue. Following the two-hour launch event November 29, enjoy live music at Settepani and Corner Social’s tree lighting.

On December 2, after the event there will be an art-filled afternoon for all ages. The window displays continue throughout the holiday season.

This season, Harlem Holiday Windows transforms store windows into scenes from festive cultural celebrations, producing stunning results that turn the facades of Lenox Avenue retailers into traffic-stopping sights.

The vision is to also decorate the median of this wide avenue with lights and ornaments. “It will leave audiences breathless,” remarked Orange. “The experience is everything.”

Yellow Taxi Industry Remains a Pathway to Success for Immigrants By: Amar Kehal

ew York City’s yellow taxi industry has, for generations, played a crucial role in providing good jobs for immigrants in communities across the five boroughs. I should know – I love my job as a taxi driver because it gives me a path to the middle class.

There is no doubt that our industry has been changing and growing even more in recent years, with new technology and ideas at the forefront. That is why I am still proud to be part of a yellow taxi industry that is constantly evolving to meet new challenges while staying true to what really matters – supporting the immigrant drivers who make it all possible.

The reality is that, despite what you might hear from big corporations like Uber, driving a taxi provides many great opportunities today as it did for many others who have settled in this country from all parts of the world for a better life.

Today’s yellow taxi drivers have more options than ever before – including easy-to-use e-hail apps like Arro, Curb and Via, which allow us to pick up more passengers throughout all corners of the city.

Popular new programs are also allowing taxi drivers to get into “ridesharing,” which enables us to pick up multiple passengers at once. Simply put, we can do anything that Uber and Lyft can do – and because we are part of a truly iconic

New York City industry, and because the vast majority of us are full time professional drivers, we can do it better, and we can do it safer.

Just as importantly, the taxi industry looks out for us in ways that multi-billion-dollar corporations like Uber and Lyft don’t. When I am driving my yellow taxi, I feel strongly supported by others in the industry who care about me and my success. I’m proud to know that I am part of an industry – a family – when I drive my taxi.

Let’s be real – there is a new story all the time about how companies like Uber are failing their drivers by underpaying them or not supporting them when it really matters. That is not the kind of industry I want to be

part of – and it is why I still feel so strongly about being part of a yellow taxi family.

That is part of why our industry is still home to so many immigrants from across the world. Around 90 percent of yellow taxi drivers are immigrants, representing more than 160 countries of origin.

It is incredible to be part of such a diverse industry that actually recognizes the power of immigrant workers and voices.

For me and for many others, driving a yellow taxi is a ticket out of poverty.

After arriving in America, I worked a number of deadend jobs below minimum wage, like so many other immigrants, but I stayed focused because I want to provide a better future for my family. As a taxi driver, I am making that vision a reality.

For me, driving a yellow taxi means staying in the middle class and finding new opportunities for success in this incredible, unpredictable city we call home. It means being part of an evolving, growing industry that is led by the hearts, the minds and the hard work of immigrants.

sad reality is the fact that many Harlem residents are not in a financial position to purchase a home. Although they see the community transiting before their eyes, many community residents have not prepared to buy. The truth of the matter is you cannot allow time to pass by. If you are ever going to successfully complete the home buying process, you must first start the process.

However, too many prospective first-time home buyers appear to be in a state of ‘financial paralysis.’ This is unfortunate because every day more home buying opportunities are being lost. There are now very few affordable properties available in Harlem. The market-priced homes are out of reach for most low to moderate

income families. I understand how overwhelming and complex the home buying process can be, especially for first time buyers. But you must be able to push past your anxieties to make homeownership a reality.

Here are a few helpful tips to assist you in completing the process.

(1) Attend the home buyer education workshop with HCCI. This program will equip you with knowledge and provide step-by-step instructions. You will gain the confidence needed to successfully complete the home buying process. You will learn how to assemble your home buying team from industry professionals. The knowledge acquired of the home buying process will enable you to make better decisions. You will learn how

to recognize and avoid falling victim to costly predatory lending practices.

(2) Create a monthly household budget and aggressively save as much money as possible. Avoid all wasteful spending. The home buying process is extremely expensive. Managing your money wisely is key to completing the process and becoming a successful homeowner.

(3) Use your credit responsibly. This is one of the biggest reasons mortgage application are denied: too much outstanding credit debt.

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER

t is the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and Jazz at Lincoln Center joyfully announces 16 holiday-themed nights in December. Jazz at Lincoln Center will ring in the holidays with Big Band Holidays, December 13-17, a decades-long annual NYC holiday tradition. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will be joined by special guest vocalists Catherine Russell and Kenny Washington. With fresh arrangements, playful improvisation, and entertaining storytelling, the Orchestra will bring out the magic in

Harlem Holiday Kick-Off on 125th Street

n Thursday, November 16, 2017, the 125th Street Business Improvement District (“BID”), in conjunction with Manhattan Community Boards 9 & 10 presented the 25th Annual Harlem Holiday Lights to kick off the holiday season.

Stretching along 125th Street from Marginal Street on the far west side to Fifth Avenue, 125th Street was alive with a host of activities from 3pm to 8pm.

The Health Village opened at 3pm at the Triangle at 124th and 125th Streets from Amsterdam Avenue to Morningside Avenue and was hosted by Healthfirst, FDNY, NY Department of Mental Health and the Ryan

Center. Healthfirst had their Health Screening RV parked on 124th Street passing out literature. The Mental Health Action Center provided mental health screenings and the Ryan Center had their RV out there as well providing glucose, HIV, HEPC and blood pressure screenings.

The 125th Street BID held its 25th Annual holiday lighting ceremony with lighted floats as well as introducing new lighting designs this

year. The celebration stretched along 125th Street from Marginal Street to Fifth Avenue to kick off the holiday season in Harlem. With caravans of lighted vehicles, the floats followed the 125th Street BID contractor down 125th Street turning on street decorations.

Spiderman and Thor were also roaming around 125th Street compliments of the 125th Street BID as well.

nity leaders stopped into the Manhattan Borough President’s 125th Street office for a few snacks and beverages to celebrate the holiday season. Along with MBP Brewer, State Assemblywoman Inez Dickens and State Senator Brian Benjamin dropped by and joined Curtis Archer, President of the Harlem Development Corporation, the BID’s chairman Mukaram Taheraly, owner of Mustari Hardware, and

President Barbara Askins for some holiday cheer before the floats started moving.

Several 125th Street merchants host in-store activities and promotions such as Blick Art Materials, which had its grand opening that day, held six art demonstrations throughout the day and Red Lobster’s staff wore funky hats that day.

From 4pm to 8pm Community Board #9 Arts and Culture committee hosted Children’s Village at

Harlem Commonwealth Council’s building at 361 West 125th Street. The village featured a live performance by Every Voice Choirs, and Harlem Chamber Players. An appearance by The Snow Queen and other characters are always children’s favorites at the village. There were face painters, puppeteers, games and giveaways from the Migdol Foundation. Refreshments were also served.

The newest addition was the Silent Party presented by the Alpha Gamma Lambda chapter (Harlem Alphas) of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. on

the holiday lights community stage on Morningside Avenue in between 125th and 126th Streets. How did the Silent Party Work? When you arrived, you received a pair of special wireless headphones for the price of $10.

You could adjust the volume and choose between the three

channels with a flip of a switch. Each headset has a color LED that showed what channel you are listening to, so you can dance along with those listening to the same DJ as you. There was no loud music that you had to talk over.

Plus, no ringing in your ears when you

left.

O

n behalf of the Board of Directors and members of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC), I wish to extend our deepest sympathy on the recent loss of New York Beacon Publisher and Co-Founder, Walter Smith.

Walter was a principal member of our Chamber and a fierce advocate for the rights of all, especially for people of color. He had a broad local, regional, na18 tional and international perspec-

tive that took into consideration the past, present and future.

I am honored that Walter was a great friend and mentor to me. Under his leadership over the decades, the NY Beacon provided a steady platform that effectively recorded the experiences of people of color on the pages of the Beacon on a regular basis. Walter Smith also championed the cause of unity and collectiveness for members of the National Newspaper Publishers Asso-

ciation (NNPA). His opinions and viewpoints from politics to community initiatives appeared in numerous NNPA publications throughout the country.

Walter enjoyed a tremendous partnership with his beloved wife and NY Beacon Co-Publisher and CEO, Miatta Haj Smith, and he adored his children.

He will be missed, but Walter’s many achievements will always be remembered. We encourage all to continue to support the NY Beacon, now, more than ever.

“The Black Press has lost a true giant in Black America,” said Dorothy R. Leavell, Chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and publisher of the Chicago and Gary Crusader newspapers. “Walter Smith made a difference in so many lives of Black readers and Black publishers in the Northeast, and America, in general.”

As CEO of the Smith Haj Group, Smith published New York’s premier weekly, New York’s Beacon and the Philadelphia Observer. Like Black

NNPA members, colleagues, friends and family are mourning the loss of a publisher who never forgot his humble beginnings “The New York Beacon” gives the news to readers in New York City’s five boroughs-Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.

In 2006, Smith acquired “The Philadelphia Observer.”

the NNPA. “One thing that we can rest assured of, is the news that we gather and the news that we present is just as relevant today as it was in the 80s,” Smith said in the Beacon.

Over the years, Smith received many awards and proclamations for doing what he loved best.

“The NNPA mourns profoundly the passing of beloved publisher Walter Smith,” said Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the NNPA. “At a time that we are celebrating the 190th year of the Black Press, we pause to salute the outstanding contributions of Walter Smith to the Black Press. We will keep Miatta Smith and the Smith Family in our sincere prayers, as we express our condolences.”

Mental Health Disorders - Help is Urgent!

I

n the mix of numerous stigmas that are prominent in our thoughts and attitude is one that is taken too lightly. A check up from the neck up means “crazy.” Because of this judgement, many people shy away from seeking or speaking about mental health. Crazy is serious!

Real or not, it should not be played with or ignored.

Any usage of the word or insinuation of such should not be used to insult or slander.

We may have a friend or family member who is thought of as oddly different in their actions and reactions. We laugh and refer to them as peculiar, nuts, loony, wacko, or even acting out for attention. We put their behavior in a box and side step it as often as possible to avoid

contact or confrontation.

We may deliberately overlook the unusual in others as some quirk or odd behavior they exhibit under stress or duress.

Maybe they are showing symptoms of a mental health disorder and it has been going on for a long time.

Recently, I participated in an eight-hour course,

Mental Health First Aid USA, a program of the National Council for Behavioral Health. The idea and the importance of the course were brought to the Abyssinian Baptist Church by Linda Thompson, leader of the Health & Wellness Ministry of the church. Thompson’s astute interest in providing good health practices and how-to information has led to numerous ongoing, time-worthy programs, such as this one.

Without a doubt, those who attended will admit that Thompson went above and beyond in bringing this subject to the forefront. Media reporting on horrific crimes and senseless deaths are occurring daily as a result of mental health disorders. It has become a major platform for

New York City’s first lady, Chirlane McCray.

The curriculum of the course consisted of training to provide initial help to people experiencing problems such as depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis and substance abuse disorders. At the end of the day, attendees received certification as a mental health first aider.

The certification by no means qualified anyone as a psychologist or professional, however, it opened my eyes to the symptoms of mental health disorders and the common misunderstandings. Many mental health disorders can be treated, and recovery is possible.

There are numerous terms used to describe mental health problems that include: Anxiety

disorders, Major depressive disorder; Substance use disorder, Bipolar disorders, Eating disorders, Schizophrenia and others.

Mental disorders can occur in combination. It is not unusual for a person with an anxiety disorder to develop depression, or a person who is depressed to also have a substance use disorder.

Hindsight is twentytwenty when you look back and focus on those obvious symptoms of something gone awry.

Consider the sudden outbursts of an otherwise calm spouse; over enthusiasm of violence and weapons by a youngster; or the friend who used to be present and participatory seldom answers calls or accepts invitations. Just as important;

So I started to think about how I would handle the accompanying food and drink that comes with partying. It is hard to resist the tempting aroma of home fried chicken, fish, cornbread and potato salad, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy . . . all the scents of the holidays and let’s not forget the champagne, wine, mixed drinks and eggnog to wash it all down. So . . . I figure that if I have an issue, then surely someone else might have one too!

The Diversity Green Card Lottery

T

he Diversity Immigrant Visa Program was first created in 1980, mainly to benefit Irish immigrants.

Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts and Representative Bruce Morrison of Connecticut, both Democrats, invoked a “diversity” rationale in noting that the program would help the many Irish in the United States who had overstayed their temporary visas. The program was then changed

to accept anyone from countries that don’t send many immigrants to the United States. In 1990, the program was passed through a bill signed into law by former President George Bush. This program gives individuals from select countries the opportunity to win a visa by random selection. It is managed by the State Department and has been functioning since 1995.

The Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery Program awards up to

50,000 individuals per year with a visa, for a green card; which then leads to residency and citizenship in the U.S. This program can ultimately be life changing, as it provides immigrants from other countries the chance to have access to the occupational, educational and medical opportunities the United States has to offer.

According to travel. state.gov, the top receiving country under the program is Nepal with

an annual lottery.”

President Trump and other Republican lawmakers are in favor of ending this lottery program and are placing great emphasis on advocating for merit-based programs. For example, The Reforming America’s Immigration for Strong Employment (RAISE) Act was proposed in August and its goal is to cut legal immigration levels in half over a decade.

On Tuesday, October 31, 2017, 29-year old Sayfullo Saipov was accused of killing eight people after he ran over pedestrians and cyclists on a bike path in Manhattan. Saipov was a diversity visa lottery winner, who got the opportunity to come to the United States from Uzbekistan seven years ago.

This horrific event caused many to question the flaws within the Diversity visa lottery program. For example, the requirements are viewed by some as minimal, as the program requires the applicant to have a high school education or its equivalent, or two years of qualifying work experience as defined under provisions of U.S. law.
