He was a “rock” in the black publishing industry and tackled the tough topics with his weekly editorial regarding issues affecting the African-American community. NY Urban League’s 31st Annual HBCU College Fair

n Saturday, November 11, 2017, the NY Urban League held the 31st Annual Malcolm Bernard Historically Black Colleges and Universities (“HBCU”) College Fair at the Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park from 11am to 3pm. I started the day by talking to a mother, Yolanda Caldwell, and her daughters,

Students were coming by charter bus, by car and on the city bus to get there. Due to the extremely cold weather, we went through the

I stopped by the NY Urban League table and had a brief conversation with Patricia Scarborough, Senior Career/Employment Counselor with the organization. Patricia works with people 18 years old and over, assisting them with career development, including performing mock interviews. Since 2008, she has also assisted people 55 years old and older who lost their jobs and are having a hard time dealing with finding positions in the 21st century.

two buildings assisting students on getting into various workshops being held throughout the two buildings.

Back in the day you had to anxiously wait for a letter to come in the mail delivered by the post office; thick envelope meant you’re in and a thin one meant you probably didn’t get in.

I went over to this area and met Kala Crawford, who got accepted into Cheyney University and Khadidiaton Ba, who got accepted into Virginia State University. 21st century technology at these college fairs can speed up the process for today’s high school students.

etty Park opened her first restaurant in Harlem in 1984 during a time when relationships between Harlem residents and Korean business owners were not at their best. Unlike the other Korean business owners at that time she made two decisions that made a difference in her business’ destiny. She decided to hire Harlem residents to work in her business and she decided to become involved within the community in various programs.

ACA ENROLLENT SURGING, EVEN THOUGH IT ENDS DEC. 15

he enrollment period to be covered by the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) began Nov.1, and is scheduled to end Dec. 15, for those hoping to qualify for health care coverage beginning January 1, 2018.

The Trump Administration, which has made no secret of its wish to “repeal and replace” President Barack Obama’s signature legislative achievement, has done everything it can to force the ACA to whither on the vine by cutting the enrollment period from the previous three months, to just 45 days. And it has also cut the $100 million Obama Administration budget to advertise the open enrollment period, and slashed grant funding efforts for state and community organizations across the nation that reach those in dire need of all that the ACA offers through education and mobiliza-

tion, by an estimated 90 percent to just $10 million for the entire nation.

And yet, according to recent published reports, Pres. Trump’s efforts to strangle the ACA to discourage participation are coming up short. In fact, based on available numbers, people are enrolling at a higher, faster pace than last year at this time, and there’s every reason to believe that pace will continue the closer Dec. 15 comes.

While no official numbers have been released by the administration yet, The Washington Post (citing sources) reports that “More than 200,000 Americans chose a plan on Nov. 1 (first day of open enrollment). That’s more than double the number of consumers who signed up on the first day of enrollment last year. More than one million people visited HeathCare.gov, the official federal

website, the official said, which amounts to roughly a 33 percent increase in traffic compared with 2016.”

This doesn’t account for over a dozen states that have their own health insurance exchanges.

However, several states, like California, New York and Connecticut, all say they are seeing more signups over last year as well.

Indeed, those wishing to enroll should go to www.healthcare.gov to qualify for federal tax subsidies to offset the rising cost of health insurance premiums.

Those subsidies, better known as APT (Advanced Premium Tax subsidies), make monthly premiums more affordable for most Americans who apply.

Premiums on some health insurance plans can be subsidized, as low as $87.00 per month from a high of $662.00, depending on the type of plan an applicant needs and

signs up for.

To make sure Pres. Trump’s efforts to squash the ACA signup period fails, several advocacy groups across the nation, including the NNPA, have stepped forward, making sure that their constituencies are properly informed about all ACA deadlines and requirements.

Some states are stepping up to cover the cost of open enrollment education too, like California, adding $5 million to its efforts.

The question now is, though it’s clear that many Americans are ignoring Trump’s efforts to kill the ACA, just how many of them are young people? There is concern in the health care community that most of the new signups are people who are older and have afflictions, versus young, healthy people who are needed in large numbers in order for the ACA to work properly by design.

ith about six weeks remaining in the year, home buying activity continue to accelerate. New home sales are exceeding all projected goals.

For those who are ‘mortgage ready’ and have received pre-approvals, you realize the competitive nature of the housing buying market.

Most lenders are getting caught up in this home-buying frenzy. To assist first time buyers, they have introduced enhanced mortgage products that contain some financial assistance. However, you must be ready to buy. You will need enough money for the down payment and closing costs.

You must have a solid credit history. Lenders will require a minimum of 24 months of clean credit history.

They will usually require you to have at least three active lines of credit. If you do not have three active accounts, some lenders will accept receipts from non-traditional lines of credit to establish a payment history such as your rent, utilities, or cell phone companies. Your credit score can be another concern. Many first-time mortgage products will require a minimum credit score of 650.

Here are some suggestions to help increase your score: (1) always pay your bills on time. Late payments will lower your score. It might help to use an automatic pay system if you get too busy to send in the payment.

(2) Pay more than the minimum amount. Paying more than the minimum amount

will help to reduce the outstanding balance faster.

(3) Keep your balance at about 30% of your overall credit limit. This will indicate you can use your credit wisely.

(4) Only open new credit accounts when necessary. An inquiry is made every time you apply for a new account, which will lower your score.

(5) Keep your accounts active by regularly using them.

Never close any of your older accounts because they will make up most of your credit history.

he Ministry of Arts and Culture of The Nation of Islam’s Muhammad Mosque No.7 hosted the Second Annual Father Daughter Dance on Saturday, November 11, 2017 from 6pm to 9pm at The Learning Tree Cultural Preparatory School in the Bronx at 801 Bartholdi Street. The event was named “A Moment in Time” and grew out of the ministry’s desire to provide a memorable and quality experience for fathers and daughters of all

and Culture. The dance originated out of the ministry’s desire to focus on building and maintaining a strong family foundation.

Sister Cindy Muhammad and her committee decorated the room with helium balloons in the ceiling and two large columns of powder blue balloons stopped with a big white balloon. The round tables where people were seated were beautifully decorated with silver tiaras and wands.

There was a photograph station where you could take a keepsake photo for $5. There was a table with memorable items like a photo of the late, great boxer Muhammad Ali after he had knocked down an opponent and a black woman and man dolls dressed in Nation of Islam garments that were on sale to the highest bidder.

The fathers and daughters proceeded into the room and the fathers were given a brief lesson on how to waltz with their daughters.

The daughters ranged in age from pre-school age to grown women. They danced until the Dads needed a break. Then the DJ changed the music to recent hits like

“Watch Me’ and the girls took over the floor doing dances like the Nae Nae and the Stinky Leg. Fathers started dancing with their wives to old school music like Maze featuring Frankie Beverly’s “Before I Let You Go.” Line dance music like the Wobble, Cha Cha Slide and the Electric Slide got most of the women up on the floor.

They had one table filled with fresh fruit and cupcakes that you could serve yourself. When dinner was ready, we got on line and the servers dished up orange chicken, baked ziti, mixed vegetables and tossed salad; everything tasted delicious.

I’m still a “Daddy’s Girl” so covering this event was dear to my heart. Two sayings that were included in the program that have resonated all of my life is, “No one in this world can love a girl more than her father,” and “Fathers, be your daughter’s first love and she’ll never settle for anything less.” Whoever thought that religious people don’t party haven’t attended an event thrown by God’s people.

Thanks for the invite Sister Latoya; I had a fabulous time with the members of Mosque No. 7.

Golden Life Look at Medicare in Spirit and Health

I believe the mindset she is planting in seniors that follow her lead, advice and programming is KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. With that in mind, I attended, A BETTER YOU workshop, on November 7, 2017 hosted by Dr. Maxwell, presented by UnitedHealthCare, which focused on an in-depth look at Medicare.

Rita Tolbert, a representative of UnitedHealthCare broke it down in no uncertain terms, without touting the horn of the insurance company

of which she is connected. Tolbert’s knowledge of Medicare and patience in explaining its many aspects was exemplary, as she encouraged attendees to become self-advocates.

Medicare Made Clear, a simple guide to understanding Medicare from UnitedHealthCare was a valuable handout to maneuver through the complexities of what Medicare is and the language of its numerous parts: A, B, C, D; Premium Monthly Charge, Annual Deductible; Co-insurance; Medicare Approved Amount; Accepted Doctor Assignment; Medicare Advantage; Formulary Tiers and Medicare supplement insurances and how they differ.

When you are enrolled in Medicare, you have to know what is covered, but most importantly, what is NOT covered. There are benefits available, there are health insurance companies up the kazoo, but you won’t know until you know, so it is up to each of us to do the research to be

What seems to be true though, is that the holidays always seem to bring out the generosity of the human spirit. Organizations host holiday dinners for those less fortunate, gifts are collected for the children of the less fortunate and for a few

short weeks, life gets a little better for them.

What about the rest of the year? Their needs are still the same. They still sleep in homeless shelters, under bridges, in cars and go without food and other life necessities; needless to say, money is scarce.

They won’t be shopping until they drop!

Living from day to day takes up most of their time.

So, while you are enjoying your holidays, remember that life doesn’t really change much for people who struggle everyday just to survive. Be thankful that you enjoy life’s basics. Be thankful for your health. If you can

find it in your heart to remember the less fortunate during the holiday season; then you can surely find it in your heart to remember them the rest of the year. Be as generous as you can every season because poverty never takes a holiday. Think about it. See you next week.

As I dashed up the subway escalator trying to make it onto the platform before the train pulled away, there was a young man probably in his late twenties a few stairs ahead of me. As I got closer to the man I politely asked that he excuse me, to which he did not move. I asked him again, this time louder

In fact, he even seemed totally accepting of being moved aside as he finally realized he was inadvertently blocking me from passing.
