NAACP’s Dr. Hazel Dukes Calls for Unity in the Wake of Trump Win

T

he head of the state’s NAACP called for the community to come together in the wake of Donald Trump cinching the presidency in a stunning upset Nov. 8.

Although rival Hillary Clinton scored the popular vote with 59,814,018 ballots cast in her favor, Trump’s strong support in the South and Midwest propelled him to over the 270 Electoral College votes needed for victory.

Dr. Hazel Dukes told the Harlem News that the community had

been through tough political times before, and through coming together, would take Trump head on.

“We just have to get ourselves together,” Dr. Dukes told the Harlem News. “We’ve got to get a coalition together.. The civil rights community, the religious community, the fraternities and the sororities, we’ve got to come together for our community. We went to the ballot box, and now we’ve got to build a coalition of like-minded people.”

New York voters went to the polls in record numbers, with 58 percent of voters supporting Hillary Clinton to 42 percent for Trump, according to the New York Times. And although the

state ultimately went to Clinton, Dr. Dukes said going forward, voters need to turn up for every election in order for the community to have more of a say in how the Trump administration shapes the laws.

“We did what we were supposed to do,” she said. “We went to the ballot box in record numbers, and we’ve got to continue to go until we make people understand and respect (the process). We’ve got to lean to get out and vote at every election, not just the presidential election.

Dr. Dukes - who has headed the New York State NAACP state conference for nearly four decades - urged dejected democrats not to be discouraged. She pointed to the NAACP’s fight to block then-president Ronald Regan’s choice for Supreme Court, Robert Bork, a candidate many considered to be a hard line racist conservative who wanted to ban a woman’s right to choose.

“We’ve been here before,” she said.

Dr. Dukes said she’ll have to wait and see what

Trump will do once he heads to the Oval Office early next year, but said we’ve already witnessed Trump cronies like former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani’s “law and order” policies, and wouldn’t be surprised if there would be more of the same.

“He’s going to appoint Rudy Guiliani,” she said.

“We’ve had experience with this man. We’ve got to teach our young black men. We’ve got some education to do and to pull ourselves together.”

NYC PARKS OPENS PIER 90 TO PUBLIC SEVEN DAYS A WEEK

New Yorkers Provided Greater Access to East River Waterfront to revitalize the East River waterfront from 36th Street all the way uptown to 125th Street so to provide greater public access, thanks to funding from the Mayor, City Council and Council Member Ben Kallos, and support from many others.”

For the various projects along the East River, NYC Parks has received $35 million in funding from Mayor de Blasio, $6 million from the City Council, $2 million from Council Member Ben Kallos, in addition to commitments from Rockefeller University and the Hospital for Special Surgery.

“No more having to peer through bars to see our beautiful waterways at the 90th Street pier thanks to our new park. I am committed to examining every inch of the East Side to find more park space that residents can use year round,” said Council Member Ben Kallos, CoChair of the East River Esplanade Taskforce. “Thank you to Congress Member

Maloney for her leadership, State Senator Serrano and Assembly Member Rodriguez for their partnership, the Friends of the East River Esplanade for their advocacy and collaboration, the Department of Transportation for gifting this pier, and the NYC Parks for opening this pier as a public park.”

“In this city, every inch of open space is precious,” said Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY12). “As Co-Chair of the East River Esplanade Task Force, I am thrilled that the 90th street pier is finally open to the public, giving residents and visitors access to more than 3,000 feet of park space along the Esplanade. The new ferry stop will provide a much needed connection to the Bronx as well as several areas along the east side. I want to thank Councilmember Kallos, Friends of the East River Esplanade, and everyone else who had a hand in making this happen.”

The banks of the East River are essential cultural and economic resources that our communities deserve to see fully restored.”

Pier 90 will now be open seven days a week, 7 a.m. to dusk, after most recently only being opened by NYC Parks on Sundays. Prior, NYC DOT managed the operation of Pier 90, and it will be a part of the Citywide Ferry System.

THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION EXPOSED AMERICA’S RACIST AND SEXIST PATRIARCHY FOR THE WORLD TO SEE

ust a few days before the corrosive 2016 election, it occurs to me that no matter what the outcome, our social fabric has been shredded by the ugliness of this campaign. Sure, there have been ugly campaigns before, but this one has revealed the extent to which racism and sexism are acceptable features of life in these United States. Women, including Hillary Clinton, have been routinely disparaged, not only in politics, but also in their roles as television talking heads and anchors. While I’m not weeping for Megyn Kelly (she’s a big girl, and she can take care of herself), her on-air collision with Newt Gingrich was classic, with a jowly male bully loudly talking over a television host and accusing her of being “obsessed” with sex. And the disparagement of women flowed down the ticket – in Illinois, Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) had the nerve to disparage challenger Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) because of her Thai heritage. Her dad traces his family’s military service back to the eighteenth century, while her Mom is from Thailand. When she cited her military background, Kirk nastily said he was unaware that her family had come all the way from Thailand to fight for the United States. Shame on Kirk for demonstrating his ignorance by

criticizing the military service of a woman who lost both her legs in the Iraq war.

All’s fair, they say, in love and war, and many see politics as a special kind of war. And certainly, those women who play the politics game have to have thick skin and broad shoulders, because men are not likely to treat women with kid gloves because of their gender. However, gendered criticism (“she lacks stamina,” “look at that face”) is woven into the fabric of our nation’s racist patriarchy, and the “other” (women, people of color) is often put down using gendered or racialized code words. In some cases, as with Tammy Duckworth, people don’t even bother to use code words.

The backlash from eight years of the Obama presidency means that plenty of racists have come out to play. I thought we’d seen the last of David Duke, the reported KKK member who is again running for the U.S. Senate from Louisiana. Instead, he seems to have slithered from under some rock, just in time to endorse Donald Trump, throw shade on Evan McMullin (the Utah native and former CIA operative who is running a long-shot campaign for President), and attack Jewish people. Most listeners recoiled from Duke’s hateful words, and the Trump campaign

quickly distanced itself from the Duke endorsement. Shocking, though, that this level of racist hate is so openly articulated. And Mr. Trump’s racial rhetoric suggests that the Duke endorsement, if unwelcome, was at least somewhat consistent with that which Mr. Trump has been preaching.

The use of terms like “law and order” or “stop and frisk” ignores the issues the Black Lives Matter Movement has raised, not the least of which are the police killings of young Black people. And the Black Lives Matter Movement has been routinely been disparaged during this 2016 campaign. The disparagement of the Black Lives Matter Movement really disparages all Black people and reminds us that, despite progress, race still matters.

If racism and sexism are woven into the fabric of our nation, how do we pull those threads out without ruining the fabric? Or has the fabric already been so fully shredded that we have the opportunity to “start over.” Actually, there will be no starting over. Our economic structure and the credo of predatory capitalism depend on the ability of capital-

ists to extract surplus value from the work of those that are “other.” Capitalists maximize profits by minimizing expenses. Thus enslavement, though an inhumane institution, was also an efficient one for those who were able to use free labor. We’ve come a long way from enslavement, but the exploitation of workers continues, which is why the “Fight for $15,” which will disproportionately benefit women and people of color, is so important.

This 2016 election has put many of our national wounds, and much of our fractured history, on display. Is there healing after all of this divisiveness? Washington gridlock isn’t likely to stop just, because the election is over. Still, there must be leaders who are willing to talk solutions. When does our nation finally confront race and talk about reparatory justice? When do we, culturally, talk about sexism and the pay gap that remains, despite women’s progress? Or will we continue to limp along, wounds exposed, the fabric so frayed that it can’t be stitched back together?

“By overlooking common DIY projects, homeowners are not only putting themselves at risk for major financial loss, but also are exposing their families to dangerous hazards,” says Joe Vahey, vice president and product manager at Erie Insurance.

In an effort to help people become more aware of what they can be doing to protect themselves, the experts at Erie Insurance list five commonly overlooked areas of the home that should be regularly inspected and maintained: Inspect Your Roof Replacing or repairing a roof is one of the biggest expenses a homeowner may have and the need to do it often comes without warning. Nationally, the average homeowner spends about $6,600 to install a new roof, according to HomeAdvisor, but prices can soar upwards of $20,000 depending on certain factors.

Clean Out Dryer Exhaust One in five homeowners (21 percent) admit they never clean their clothes dryer ducts, unless they have a problem. Unfortunately, the most common cause of dryer fires is failure to do a thorough cleaning. According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), dryers cause roughly 15,500 home structure fires, 29 deaths, 400 injuries and $192 million in direct property loss each year.

If Mae Mallory was a two-fisted fighter when the police attacked the Patrice Lumumba protest at the United Nations, then Malcolm X identified Gloria Richardson as the paradigm for the Grassroots in

Carnegie Hall’s rewarding collaboration with Vivian and Ray Chew began several years ago in 2009, when Ray served as Musical Director for two concerts during Carnegie Hall’s festival, Honor!, celebrating the African-American cultural legacy with artists spanning blues, jazz, gospel, R&B, soul, and beyond.

He went on to curate A Night of Inspiration the following year, a sold-out, all-star concert where he conducted a 63-piece orchestra joined by a 125 voice choir and notable artists from the gospel and secular communities. In 2012, Ray directed A Tribute to Motown at Carnegie Hall, paying homage to the distinctive soul sound of the legendary record label’s over 50-year legacy. Last December, he

brought together two of gospel music’s biggest stars—Donnie McClurkin and Kim Burrell—in a one-of-a-kind participatory concert at the Hall.

Music Director Ray Chew performs at the helm of award-winning musical events with the world’s most popular artists including Rihanna, Carrie Underwood, Prince, Justin Bieber, Aretha Franklin, Lenny Kravitz, Barry Manilow, Queen Latifah, James Taylor, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Jennifer Hudson, and Quincy Jones. UFC takes New York City by Storm

he Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) had their first-ever event in New York City on Saturday, November 12, 2016, with a stacked card featuring “Notorious” Conor McGregor in the main event

versus Eddie Alvarez and 10 other bouts. The event, which drew a sold-out crowd of 20,427 and made $17.7 million, an MSG and UFC record, did not disappoint.

McGregor dominated his match with left hands landed

with precision, knocking out Alvarez in the second round to become the first man ever to simultaneously hold championship titles in the UFC in two divisions (lightweight and featherweight.)

The brash Irishman was

ever-confident after the match. “Eddie is a warrior but he shouldn’t be in there with me. I am a different level. Now, I celebrate as champion of two divisions.”

In other notable matches, Yoel Romero stunned Chris Weidman in the third round with a double flying knee in the most brutal knockout of the night. Fan favorite Miesha Tate announced her retirement after a loss to Raquel Pennington, Joanna Jedrejczyk defeated Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and in the co-main event, Tyron Woodley retained his UFC Welterweight Title in a majority draw versus Stephen Thompson.

There was some controversy after the match, as ring announcer Bruce Buffer walked out of the ring to confirm the result, then announced Woodley as the winner, only to have it announced as a majority draw two minutes later. Woodley discussed it after the match.

“I don’t know what to think.

At the end of the day, it’s a big difference to get the draw than to get the win but I’ll take either over a loss any day. I just hate leaving the Octagon in that type of situation. I had some good moments. I could’ve pressed him more but I feel like the only significant damage done in that fight was by me. I

should’ve created a little more distance when I rocked him so I could land more shots and end it. I went for the guillotine and feel like that was a bad decision. Even then, I thought that was close to a 10-8 round. I don’t agree with the draw. I thought I won but he’s a tough kid and it was a great fight.” It is a match that could definitely see a rematch, possibly for UFC 209, which will mark the UFC’s second event in New York City, this time at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. I have not heard of any announcements for when tickets go on sale, but that is certainly one you need to be at if you are a MMA fan.

Battling the Leading Cause of Death for Women: Heart Disease

W

hen researchers in the Netherlands recently compiled data from 32 studies involving more than 300,000 women, they reached a disturbing conclusion.

Women who experience early menopause – before the age of 45 – face an increased risk for heart disease and premature death.

“This is why women who go into early menopause need to pay special attention to their lifestyle choices and habits,” says Mache Seibel, M.D., a leading American expert on menopause and author

of The Estrogen Window (www.EstrogenWindowBook.com).

Those same women also should explore the possibility of taking estrogen, which in addition to its other benefits can help reduce the risk of death from heart disease, he says.

More than a decade ago, the Women’s Health Initiative advised menopausal women to stop using estrogen because of a reported increase in breast cancer, strokes and heart attacks.

Since then, flaws and limitations with the WHI study have come to light, reversing some of the thinking in the medical community.

“Estrogen is safe and beneficial for the majority of women if taken in the estrogen window,” Seibel says. In fact, estrogen, if taken in the estrogen win-

dow, can lower the risk of death from heart disease.

The “estrogen window” represents the ideal time to begin estrogen replacement. The window opens the moment a woman enters menopause. Exactly when it closes is more difficult to determine, Seibel says.

Generally, it’s a 10-year time frame, but that can vary and women should have ongoing discussions with their physicians, he says.

“The important thing,” Seibel says, “is for women to educate themselves and understand that there are proactive steps they can take to remain physically and mentally healthy and thrive beyond menopause. Time spent on you isn’t lost; it’s invested!”

Open enrollment, when people can enroll in Medicare or make changes to their plans, runs every year from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. But anyone who thinks that signing up for the medical plan for seniors is simple could be in for a rude awakening – and a costly one.

What the Kids Get – Planning Your Legacy so Your Final Wishes Come True

fter a lifetime of working hard and saving faithfully, some people just want to enjoy retirement and spend their money without worrying about passing on anything to the next genera-

But plenty of others are determined to leave a legacy – whether it’s by bequeathing a tidy sum to their children and grandchildren, or bestowing a beloved charity with a parting

donation.

Not everyone, though, takes the necessary steps to accomplish their goals.

“Don’t assume everything you have left when you die will go to your children or

to your favorite cause,” says Stephanie Fullerton, president and co-founder of Fullerton Financial Planning Group and author of Living a Happy, Healthy and Inspired Retirement (www.Fullertonfp.com).

“Taxes and other costs can eat away at your legacy.”

That’s why it’s important to have a financial plan in place to help make sure as much of your wealth as possible ends up in the right hands.

It’s wise to seek professional advice from those who can guide you through the options, Fullerton says. Among some of the things to consider: • A will. Everyone knows about wills, at least in theory, but that doesn’t mean they take the time to visit with an attorney and have one drawn up. A Harris Poll last year reported that 64 percent of Americans don’t have wills.

• An IRA. Many people think of an IRA as the nest egg that will help them survive retirement, but these accounts also are one of the largest types of assets inherited by beneficiaries. If you don’t anticipate needing your IRA money in retirement, Fullerton says, you might consider a legacy-planning strategy that will help reduce taxes and increase the payout your beneficiaries will inherit upon your death.

• Trusts. There are many different types of trusts, and they can be complex to set up and execute. However, a trust can be a flexible and advantageous means to transfer your assets in the future, Fullerton says.

Most trusts also provide current benefits, such as tax-deferral and deductions. Unlike a

will, a trust will avoid probate upon your death, but a trust is also more expensive to prepare. A qualified estate-planning attorney who specializes in these matters can explain more.

Before you get started on a plan, Fullerton suggests thinking about what types of gifts you want to leave to others – and it doesn’t have to be just money.

“It can be items you own, such as your house, a favorite work of art, special dishes used at every family gathering or a family heirloom,” she says.

You don’t even have to wait until you die, Fullerton says. Experiences also can be a legacy, such as taking a special trip each year with a different grandchild to give them memories that will last not only your lifetime, but theirs as well.

aoist author and Master Wu Wei often writes that the world works in perfect order and all things are beneficial.

This is not a concept that is easy to embrace.

We all experience disappointments, tragedy, and situations that might not seem to be beneficial. According to Master Wei we can view disappointments and tragedy with questions of why or questions of how.

You can ask “Why did such a terrible thing happen to me?”

or “How can I learn to grow from this experience?” You have a choice. If you allow patience, faith and a belief that a benefit can be found in all things, your ability to overcome disappointment and tragedy will be greater than if you allow disappointment and tragedy to darken your spirit and faith.

How often have we experienced what seemed to be a negative experience at the time, but in the future realized that if that experience had not taken place a more positive

experience could not have taken place? We are all connected to the mind of the universe and that connection allows for our thoughts to manifest into reality.

There is a reason for all things if you encounter a negative experience.

Embrace it and use it as a tool for growth.

Think about what you want and not what you fear.

Fear and Doubt are the two greatest barriers to spiritual growth and development.

When we doubt our abilities and fear failure it is very difficult to succeed. It is not

the falling down that makes us strong it’s the ability to keep getting up. I believe we are in a time where our spiritual growth depends on looking for the benefit in all things. We often find what we are looking for.

There is a great deal of disappointment in America currently. It was for this reason I started to reflect on the concept of Master Wu Wei and in some small way share it with others. This, I believe is a time to focus on how to use disappointment as a tool for mental and spiritual growth.

How you spend your time is up to you. As a commodity, time can’t be sold or bartered for more time; that would require you be (mean that you would be) on someone else’s time. . . or worse yet. . . borrowed time! It is also important to give time, even if you don’t have any to other people or efforts. Giving time requires relinquishing even more valuable . . . you guessed it . . . time!

How do you make more time for yourself if you don’t have time?

Truthfully, you don’t and can’t because your time isn’t yours! Right?

Is it really possible to give something that doesn’t belong to you?

When it comes to time, the answer is yes because if you fail to find time then you end up missing the time to do it later because you will see that you are running out of time . . . again!

Then there are those we count on to always be on time, especially if we need them to help us monitor .our time, they normally provide services and operate on time schedules, trains, busses, subways and the like. We are sometimes amused (or not) if they run late, but their errors seem to really mess up our time! They make us realize that we should have given ourselves more time in the first place!

As the oldest Black Church in the State of New York, the Mother Church

of Zion Methodism, was founded in 1796 when a handful of Black men, free and enslaved walked out of the white Methodist Episcopal Church to establish a church called “Zion.” As one of the earliest opponents of slavery and a champion of abolition, Mother Zion was an important stop of the “underground railroad”.

The nurturing of great men and women is one of Zion’s legacies. Known as the Freedom Church, illustrious leaders like Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Paul Robeson, Madame C.J. Walker and many others who fought to free African Americans, socially, politically and spiritually.

Today, the AME Zion Church is located on five continents with a membership of over 1.5 million.

500 NYC Volunteers Aged 50-100 Gathered for JASA’S Volunteer Recognition Day

These volunteers are participants in JASA’s Give Back to the Community Program, which helps empower seniors by providing them with a chance to improve the lives of others. This important program enables seniors to be active contributors to society rather than passive recipients of services. Seniors of all ages are given the opportunity to volunteer with over 100 of New York’s community service programs where they can participate in activities such as serving meals for

residents at a domestic violence shelter, knitting caps for cancer patients and preemies, visiting sick children in the hospital, running clothing drives for the homeless, reading to school kids, and more “It’s very clear that people of all ages can make a meaningful difference,” said Kathryn Haslanger, JASA’s CEO. “We’ve seen, first hand, how seniors flourish when given the chance to be a part of something bigger and to help others.
