Happy Mothers Day to all the Mothers, Aunts, Grandmothers and those who have been "like a mother." In most cases we cannot hug the ones we love and because the flower shops in the community are not essential businesses - we cannot hand them flowers. Due to social distancing we should not hug and kiss them as we did in the past, unless they live in the same household. As a matter of fact right now we show them the most love by social distancing and sending our greeting cards, face time or messages on their cell phones.

Many of us feel we have suffered enough but of course it is better to suffer with 6 feet distancing than to be 6 feet under.

LEARN HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND OTHERS AT HOME. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19?

• The most common symptoms are fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath. Other symptoms include feeling achy, loss of taste or smell, headache, and diarrhea.

• Most people with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) will have mild or moderate symptoms and can get better on their own.

WHO IS MOST AT RISK FOR SERIOUS ILLNESS? • People age 50 or older (people age 65 or older are at the highest risk) • People who have other health conditions, such as: Lung disease Kidney disease Asthma Liver disease Heart disease Cancer Obesity A weakened immune system Diabetes

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I GET SICK WITH COVID-19 SYMPTOMS?

If you or someone in your home is sick: • Create physical distance: Do not have visitors.

WHEN CAN I LEAVE MY HOME AFTER BEING SICK? • If you have been sick, stay home until: You are fever-free for three days without Tylenol or other medication and It has been at least seven days since your symptoms started and Your symptoms have improved • Reminder: New York is on PAUSE. This means that even if you have been sick, you should only leave your home for essential work or errands, or to exercise, while staying at least 6 feet from others.

• If you are having a medical emergency, call 911.

• If you do not have a doctor but need one, call 844-NYC-4NYC (844-692-4692). New York City provides care, regardless of immigration status, insurance status or ability to pay.

If you are sick with COVID-19 symptoms, assume you have it. When you are sick: • If you have trouble breathing, pain or pressure in your chest, are confused or cannot stay awake, or have bluish lips or face, call 911 immediately.

• Call your doctor if you are age 50 or older or have a health condition that puts you at increased risk, or if you do not feel better after three days.

• Always contact a doctor or go to the hospital if you have severe symptoms of COVID-19 or another serious health issue.

• Do not leave your home except to get necessary medical care or essential food or supplies (if someone cannot get them for you).

• If you must leave your home: Avoid crowded places.

Stay at least 6 feet from others.

Cover your nose and mouth with a bandana, scarf or other face covering.

Wash your hands before you go out, and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer while outside.

• Household members can go out for essential work and needs but should monitor their health closely.

Stay at least 6 feet from others.

Sleep head-to-toe if you share a bed with someone who is sick, or sleep on the couch.

Keep people who are sick separate from those at risk for serious illness.

• Cover up: Cover your nose and mouth with a bandana, scarf or other face covering when you are within 6 feet of others.

Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow.

• Keep it clean: Throw tissues into the garbage immediately after use.

Wash your hands often with soap for 20 seconds, especially after you cough or sneeze.

Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands.

Frequently clean surfaces you touch, such as doorknobs, light switches, faucets, phones, keys and remote controls.

Wash towels, sheets and clothes at the warmest possible setting with your usual detergent, and dry completely.

Do not share eating utensils with others, and wash them after every use.

--The Documentary Freelancer Relief Fund is adding a third and final round of applications opening June 10, bring-

ing their total relief funding to $325,000.

(Their second round, which appears to be over-subscribed, opens May 6). Previous applications will roll into the next round, so that filmmakers don’t have to apply multiple times.

COVID Exposes How Blacks are in Danger in Medical Facilities: Why Family Advocates are Needed

y mother prays every day that my father who has been in and out of the hospital over the past few years, won’t have to suddenly go into the hospital during this COVID-19 pandemic. We know that when and if he does, he will likely die because my mother, who has always been my father’s first responder, won’t be able to be with him when he goes in. My mother has saved my father’s life on more than one occasion. Once, when my father was told that he could go home from the hospital while he was still bleeding from the rectum. “It’s probably diverticulitis acting up.

He can go home.” My father was ready, but Mom told the doctor he wasn’t leaving until he could tell her why he was bleeding and the bleeding had stopped. “I have no way of giving you a transfusion at home if you need it,” she told my father.

Another time was when he was overdosed in a rehab facility.

Fortunately, Mom decided to drop by the nursing home before attending another errand. My father was despondent when she arrived and my mother realized what had happened before the nurse did and demanded that they call the ambulance immediately. He was slipping away.

COVID-19 is shining light on a health care system that has always lacked adequate oversight.

The New Jersey Department of Health just released its first wave of self-reported COVID-19 totals.

There are more than 18,000 cases throughout the state’s long-term care facilities with an 18% fatality

However, African-Americans know that whatever the risk, theirs is going to be greater because the tandem race has no finish line in sight.

The need for safety and the importance of PPE for health care workers can’t be overstated. However, it’s time to consider loved ones as first responders as well because, in actuality, they are. They are likely the ones who got the patient to the hospital. They can usually answer questions about the patients’ health when the patient cannot. They can sit with the patient and care for their immediate needs when the nurses and doctors cannot or cannot right away. My mother did this often for my father and the nurses I saw appeared to appreciate it. These advocates are first responders as well and should be treated as such and the appropriate PPE needs to be given them. Not the whole family - just one member or friend. Just one advocate that will help balance the scales of a system that is too often fraught with injustice. Just one can make all the difference between life or death. And for Black people who are looking for the tandem race finish line, it’s the only answer.

Another Mother's Day and We Remember Mama

Our lives have taken on an unexpected change in this year of 2020, the likes of which we had never imagined. The crisis of this virus and the mandate to shelter in changed our plans for how we were going to celebrate Mother’s Day. The brunch following church service will not happen, the theatre tickets after the brunch will lay unused in the drawer. The gift you had looked for and finally decided on cannot get de-

livered. You cannot get a plane ticket or risk your old car making the trip. You wanted to be there on her special day to see her smile as if she did not know you would make your way.

Mama may be in a nursing facility and they will not let you in, for fear you might be carrying this insidious, mysterious illness.

Worst of all, many are grieving at the loss of mama in the last two months. We knew there were underlying health conditions and the age factor to consider, but little did we know, a strange bug could come from across the world in the disguise of a cold and take mama away.

Hearts were broken without the opportunity of saying farewell at her bedside.

With no disrespect to fathers and the men who

often take their place, we all profess, mothers are the glue of the black family.

In many households, north and south, they had to take care of business and hold it together for the sake of family. Mama knew how to make something out of nothing. We cannot deny her strength and conviction, and most of all, we cannot undermine her faith. It was the God in her that kept her strong and able to conquer forces of evil on all levels.

It is the source of that same force that is keeping our mothers today.

If you are grieving as this Mother’s Day draws near, it is my hope that love will find its way to your heart and you will be comforted. If mama is somewhere far or near and you cannot get there, it is

my hope that your call will make it through or perhaps you can set up a face-toface contact.

It is especially my hope that somewhere in the day, you will remember the treasured conversations you shared. May they bring a smile to your face and laughter that will surprise you. Where sadness was, happy will be as we remember things mama used to say on this Mother’s Day. The Role of the Black Church During a Pandemic

I

recently came across an article on NewsOne.com that highlighted a furor on several social media platforms regarding whether wealthy pastors are contributing enough to COVID-19 relief efforts.

Admittedly, some of the social media memes and tropes were amusing and of course, some were outright meanspirited, sophomoric and disrespectful but that’s the complex mosaic of the social media space and if you’re the public square at all, you have to be able to stomach the bitter and the sweet.

As I processed the article and the dialogue it generated, my personal

and pastoral PTSD was kicked into overdrive recalling the pummeling my church (New Birth) and I took just a few weeks earlier when we announced that we’d formulated a partnership with a telemedicine firm and a community health clinic to provide coronavirus testing to our community.

Without bothering to do any due diligence, we were labeled as “opportunists,” “vultures,” “ungodly” and worse.

And while it is always painful to be insulted and castigated, it hurts even more when it’s the African American community leading the campaign of misinformation. Of course, New Birth and I were confident in our intent and execution of the testing initiative and fortunately, local affiliate C BS 46, cleared the issue up nicely and we’re moving forward. Rather than get lost in trying to salve healing wounds, I believe our focus should

turn to the larger question of what exactly the role of the church should be, not only in this season of a global pandemic but as the core societal anchor of the African American community. I’ve preached many times that 93 percent of what Jesus did was outside of the walls of the church as he healed, fed, evangelized and organized.

Admittedly, if you were to honestly assess the 21st century church, that dynamic has been completely flipped. Far too many churches and pastors are concerned with what happens inside of the building and not concerned or active enough with affecting the greater community, and those who need to

be ministered to beyond the opulence and comfort of gleaming wood floors and the immaculate stained glass.

We indeed have a conundrum. Should the church be doing more?

Yes; and if you look closely many churches are doing plenty.

I am blessed to pastor at New Birth, where we have the capacity and more importantly, an engaged, committed church family who take seriously our mandate to love, lead and live like Christ. Our goal is to be a church that does 93 percent or more of our ministry beyond the walls of our beautiful sanctuary.

It is disheartening to see so much misinformation gain momentum and to

see the church chastised and rebuked in haste and seemingly at will.

The church is needed now more than ever and as we emerge from this recent Easter holiday, I am praying for my comrades of the gospel and I am hopeful that we as a people will be less antagonistic towards the body of Christ and that God will resurrect our hopes, restore our compassion and revive our love and interdependency on one another.

These times are challenging, stressful and unprecedented; it calls for all of us to raise our game and our consciousness in the hopes that we will emerge as a stronger, better connected community.

CBC Pledges To Continue To Fight For African Americans’ Fair Share Of Federal COVID-19 Funds

he Congressional Black Caucus has vowed to continue to advocate for African Americans in the next round of stimulus bills as some academics called for a radical agenda to save black lives and livelihoods.

Rep. Terri Sewell, (D) Alabama, acknowledged that COVID-19 as well as “systemic disinvestment” was having a dis8 proportionate impact on

black health and livelihoods, and said that the CBC was pushing for additional resources in the next proposed stimulus, as well as “rigorous oversight” of the federal funding that had already been dispersed. She said that she wants the next round of stimulus money to have special provisions for COVID-19 testing, tracing, and treatment in at-risk areas.

“There’s a difference between relief and stim-

ulus and both are inadequate to address African American communities,” Rep Sewell said April 30 in a virtual panel discussion, “Stimulus Package For Black America,” hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus and sponsored by Prudential. “We want to make sure that those who are the most at risk have access to capital, access to healthcare.”

The CBC helped secure $10 for black

businesses in the first stimulus bill, known as the “CARES” Act, in March. However critics said the money didn’t go far enough and other bailout programs that the bill funded, like the Paycheck Protection Program, didn’t trickle down to small business owners.

Rep. Sewell noted the challenges of advocacy under a Republican-led Senate and Pres. Donald Trump, noting it had been challenging to secure the

level of funding that they feel is necessary.

However, Dr. Derrick Hamilton, the executive director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at the Ohio State University, said the federal government needed to take more aggressive action in order to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus on black life, including reparations and an “anti-racist bill of rights.”

“There will not be one

silver bullet policy to address our disparities,” he said.

Dr. Andre Perry, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, also called for reparations to the descendants of enslaved African-Americans.

“We have to mobilize to deal with the structural inequalities for we’ll be living with them again,” he said. “I don’t think we have a choice not to work on these issues.”

Former Radio Personality Creates Social Media App for African Americans ‘Marcel’ to Debut his New App on Chuck D’s RapStation

Chuck D told NNPA Newswire that he’s excited about Marcel’s invention. “I’ve been having Rapstation.com, a 10-station channel portal that gets into the curation and total eloquence and narration of hip hop, and I met Marcel through the general manager,” Chuck stated. “He’s one of those geniuses, and when people look around and say how come we don’t have these portals to get our content around, he ends up partnering with a super mega-company (Apple), and he keeps making inventions and innovations. What’s great is that he’s got one name, Marcel, like Prince.”

Marcel recently received a notice from his Apple submission team that there were still a few bugs that need working through that could delay the app for another week, but that won’t affect Chuck D’s scheduled Town Hall on Rapstation.

“Every time I fix a bug, I have to test with my team as well, and it usually takes a week for just the beta testers to have it,” Marcel stated. “I am glad to be getting the word out about the app coming,

but at the end of the day, I care about the app being done right more than a timetable of comple-

tion. It has to be right. As an African American, I don’t get to get it wrong.

Hemp the Divine Gift

f you google Seshat the Kemet Goddess of Knowledge and Wisdom you will see a woman with a seven-point hemp leaf on her crown. Seshat is said to be the daughter of Tehuti (known by the Greeks as Hermes) who was Kemet’s greatest scholar and the wisest of the wise. A misinformed person might ask why the daughter of Kemet’s greatest scholar would be immortalized in Kemet structures and artwork with a Hemp leaf as a crown.

Chef Keidi Awadu introduced me to the Goddess of Wisdom during this years’ Harlem Holistic Wellness

Week (H2W) celebration he was one of the panelists on a discussion about Industrial Hemp. Chef Keidi believes that Hemp is a divine gift that can save humanity and our planet. In his current book, “Industrial Hemp-Uses and Opportunities,” he explains why he believes this about the plant.

The world has used Hemp for centuries for food, clothing, shelter, textiles and well-being, including the United States until 1937, when a political/economic influenced federal law was passed that prohibited the cultivation of cannabis. This law was temporally suspended during WWII. When the U.S. could no longer import Hemp from the Philippines due to the Japanese occupation of the country. U.S. Hemp farmers were encouraged to cultivate Hemp to make uniforms, canvas, and rope. Chef Keidi states currently we know of over 50,000 uses of Hemp. Hemp seeds could feed the world they can be eaten raw, ground into hemp meal, for baking, milk and tisanes.

Concrete blocks made from hemp and lime (hempcrete) is used to insulate construction materials to make durable breathable homes. Hemp wood and plastics are also being used in construction. Hemp was a major factor in early America, in fact the Declaration of Independence was made from hemp paper and the first American flag sewed by Betsy Ross was made from Hemp.

Henry Ford was the first car manufacturer to use hemp and now most major car manufacturers including BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Ford, and Honda use hemp to make composite panels in their automobiles. Biodiesel (hempoline) can be made from the oils in hemp seed. Research is currently being done using hemp fiber as a component in supercapacitors for energy storage.

Electric car batteries in the future will be made from hemp.

Hemp can be used for water and soil purification. It can clear impurities out of wastewater such as sewage and other unwanted chemicals. It is being used to clean contaminants at the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site and to clear radio-

isotopes and other toxins from the area’s soil, water and air.

The Cultivation and use of Hemp was legalized in the United States on December 20th, 2018. I remember the date because both my mother and son were born on the 20th of December. This allowed for hemp products for hair, skin, and pain suppression to enter the marketplace.

The therapeutic use of Hemp and marijuana can be traced to early Kemet (Egypt)

over 4000 years ago. The Egyptians were the first to identify Cancer as a disease and treat it with medical marijuana and hemp oil. Hemp based cannabinoid (CBD) products were predicted to top $1 billion annually in 2020 in a Forbes Magazine article in August 2017 that prediction will be realized before the end of this year.

There is no doubt that both New York State and the United States will legalize the

use of marijuana soon. The prohibition laws were never about marijuana use, it was the feared economic competition of the multiple uses of hemp that motivated industrial barons such as such as William R. Hearst, John D. Rockefeller and Henry du Pont who were making fortunes on industrial products that were threatened by hemp.

Now that the truth about cannabis is out (both hemp and marijuana), the green rush is on, but what about the communities and individuals that were most harmed by the unjust marijuana laws? T

he first note had your foot tapping.

It didn’t stop until the set was over or the LP needed flipping.

The song moved you; those words meant everything. And the singer of those tunes? She was the entire reason those notes were worth listening to.

In the new book “Odetta” by Ian Zack, you’ll find out why so few know her name.

From the time she was old enough to talk, Odetta Holmes could sing.

She was born on New Year’s Eve 1930 to a mother who didn’t want her and a father she didn’t meet until she was in grade school. She was

a big girl, and always self-conscious of it; on the day she met her father, he mentioned her size, which embarrassed her enough for the story to carry into her adulthood.

But the big girl had an even bigger talent.

Shortly after her mother remarried and Odetta gained a stepfather and a new surname, money was found for piano lessons. Odetta enjoyed the piano but it was her singing voice that most impressed her teacher, who insisted that the girl have a voice coach. Odetta’s school concurred and she was taught to sing operettas and German lieders, instructions that later served her well – although college was where

she learned that music and politics together were a powerful force.

Picking up a borrowed guitar and practicing at hootenannys, Odetta shyly began singing prison songs, spirituals, and then-popular folk tunes and protest songs. As her popularity grew, she became a recording artist, an actor, and a deep inspiration for history’s biggest names and folk music’s best performers, including Paul Simon and Bob Dylan.

Once, she told an interviewer that she didn’t want fame because of the hassle. In the end, Odetta got what she asked for: despite her influential work, she never had a chart-topper or a best-selling record.

The line in the sand could be drawn like this: if you’re a “whatever-music-is-fine” kind of person, then just turn the page. Nothing to see here.

If you consider yourself a major music aficianado and liner-note devotee, though, “Odetta” is your book.

The difference comes in a distinction: Odetta (who professionally used just her first name) never went mainstream despite, as author Ian Zack points out, that her influence peppers music up and down the spectrum over the last forty or fifty years. Casual readers may never have heard of her; Zack shows instead that they’ve heard her through other artists, and it happened in all

the wrong ways. Odetta wasn’t a destination, in other words; she was the journey.

Like the life of a not-quite-successful musician, however, “Odetta” struggles. Zack seems to have an odd focus on Odetta’s hair, and the point is overly belabored. There are times, too, when this story drags like back-to-back whole notes, and that’s no fun.

Still, readers who are truly serious about their music will relish “Odetta” as they grab their headphones and an LP to set the mood. If that’s you, consider this book and make note.
