The sharing of that information gave me the strength and encouragement to adjust to the treatments and know it is possible to go through them and be ok afterwards. Some people choose to keep their illnesses secret. However, I have learned by letting people know and reaching out you get a lot more support and information that may help save your life. I have always thanked God for my life, my family and the many people who have touched, inspired and supported me. I feel so truly blessed to have been raised by some strong, smart women. I also thank him for my grandfather and stepfather who stepped up to show me strong, responsible men, when my own father spent years denying me and my brother. I also thank God for giving me the vision to publish a community newspaper in Harlem. Harlem is a community filled with Black culture, home to many celebrities and heroes, as well as living celebrities, national activists and heroes. So today I am feeling so grateful and thankful. A Fashionable Day In Harlem

“O

h, it smells so good in here” exclaimed a middle-aged woman escorted by her 30 something daughter as they walked through the door of The Brownstone boutique in Harlem. The sales staff greeted them with a warm welcome and followed up with a friendly question “do you have something special coming up’’….. and the fashionable day begins.

Both women are delighted to have found a boutique they could call “their own”. The mom is leaving for a 7-day cruise to the

Bahamas, she gained some weight and is graying at the temples, but she has some swinging hips and that drop-dead smile. The Brownstone staff suggests a light weight linen pantsuit and a knee length swing dress to highlight her great legs along with a soft crinkle grey dress that packs easily and will not wrinkle for the Captains Ball on board the cruise ship.

The Mom exclaims “the white linen pant suit with the full legs and the floral top suits me just fine, because it is hard for me to find pants to fit my full

thighs”. Meanwhile, the daughter has lost herself in the racks and yells over her shoulder addressing no one in particular while heading into the dressing room “I just didn’t think you would have anything here I’d like …the clothes seem so grown up”.

She steps into the off the shoulder fitted knit dress and admires herself in the mirror, “Oh yes, I have to have this dress”. She stays within her budget and passes on the beautiful hand beaded earrings

hat is going on in Harlem? The answer is obvious.

Harlem is now a very attractive community. People who would not ever consider residing in Harlem just a few years ago are now proud homeowners. The property values in Harlem, although high are still more affordable than in most other Manhattan neighborhoods.

With the outrageous amount of money now going to cover monthly rental expenses, you would have to think that lower and moderate-income families could afford to purchase a home.

However, most lenders determine a pre-approval mortgage amount by using a debt to income ratio (DTI) of about ratio 41% of the prospective buyer’s

gross monthly income. This is the total amount allocated for your mortgage payment and minimum monthly credit debt.

Herein lies the problem, the incomes are low and housing prices too high.

What can the low/moderate income prospective buyers do? The harsh reality is they are being priced out of the community. They cannot afford to purchase property in Harlem. This has been the problem for several years, but in the past, there were at least some units in the affordable price range. Now the market values for homes in Harlem are out of control! This is a good situation for current homeowners; their equity value has appreciated. But for the prospective buyer, they are left on the outside.

What can be done? The current home values have been rapidly rising like a tidal wave. In fact, this is not a problem that prospective home buyers in Harlem are facing alone but those looking to purchase in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx are also experiencing. There is an affordable housing epidemic throughout the five boroughs.

This issue is becoming a citywide crisis! The Mayor has outlined a comprehensive plan to increase the number of affordable units, but it will take time to implement.

LA SONORA PONCEÑA At Lehman

L

salsa sound using a full percussion section, with only trumpets in his horn section that in turn harmonized with the piano and voices. By 1956 the group included pianist Vicentico Morales, with Quique’s ten-year-old son, Enrique “PAPO” LUCCA Jr., already at the piano writing arrangements. Papo recorded his first piano solo, “Smoke Mambo“, in 1958 at age twelve. By 1960, the band had performed in New York, catching the attention of Fania/Inca Records owner Jerry Masucci. The band’s early recordings featured various popular vocalists of the time, until Humberto “Tito” Gomez joined the band in 1967, and Luis Guillermo “Luigui” Texidor joined the following year. After studies at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, Papo was an accomplished pianist and arranger, and in 1968 Don Quique stepped down as musical director. Now under Papo’s direction, the La Sonora Ponceña’s sound became a fusion of traditional Cuban and modern Latin styles.

In 1969 they released their first Inca LP, with all arrangements

by Papo, Hachero Pa’ Un Palo, whose hit title song established them as salsa pioneers. That album was a hit in New York, as well as their second release, Fuego en el 23 (1969). La Sonora Ponceña recorded 29 more albums for Inca, including 8 that featured singer Yolanda Rivera,

1979’s album La Ceiba that featured Cuban singer Celia Cruz, and by 1980 were a huge success. For their 1980 release New Heights, they began to make albums in English and to include Latin jazz themes, establishing the international character of the band. As salsa romántica became popular, they adjusted to commercial forces without deserting their trademark sound. In 1993, the band was awarded the Congo de Oro for best international band. La Sonora Ponceña has recorded over 35 albums, garnering dozens of platinum and gold releases of unforgettable music with hits such as “Fuego en El 23”, “30 Anos”, “Juana Bayona”, “Moreno Soy“, “Borinquen“ and “Suena El Piano“. During the celebration of the band’s 50th Anniversary, the 23rd Día Nacional de la Salsa, celebrated in Carolina, Puerto Rico, was dedicated to Don Quique, Papo Lucca and La Sonora Ponceña. Distinguished by their legendary combination of guaracha, salsa, and Latin Jazz, more than a hundred musicians have played in the band over the years. La Sonora Ponceña’s most recent albums are 2011’s El Gigante del Sur and A Band and Their Music, and 10 Para Los 100, which was released in 2012 to celebrate Don Quique’s 100th birthday!

These three screenplays included; “The Destination” by Ashley Nicole Black, “The Descent” by Varun Bhuchar, and “The Promise Keeper” by Jerry LaMothe. The screenplays were directed by acting coach, Tracey Moore @ Spirited actor. Besides the entertainment, information and food, the best thing about this event was NETWORKING. There were many connections made. It is wonderful that the National Black Theater had the privilege to hold the first and hopefully annual “Made in NY Media Summit.” Sade Lythcott, CEO of the Black National Theater, is following in her mother’s footsteps and bringing beneficial knowledge to Harlem.

SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY exhibition will be on view for free at the Mural Pavilion gallery at Harlem Hospital Center, 512 Malcolm X Blvd. at 136th Street through the end of July. This historic exhibit includes an eclectic mix of art and photography by six artists of the community. Artists include: Tau Battice, Elan Cadiz, Bryan Collier, David Vades Joseph, Dingda McCannon, Ruth Morgan and Shawn Walker.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is the permanent installation of a 25-foot-timeline honoring Harlem’s history.

Through archival images, photographs and text, you will learn about 30 people

from the past and present whose lives and work have made a difference in building and celebrating the legacy of Harlem.

The exhibit also includes a multi-media exhibit featuring the film, “Celebrating What Harlem Is” by David Lackey, with music by

trombonist and composer Craig Harris and words and poetry by iconic Harlemites and Harlem youth.

The exhibit resides in the glorious Mural Pavilion, home of the first commissioned WPA murals awarded to African American artists in 1936.

We all know that Phylicia Rashad is a great actress, but now we are realizing her di-

recting genius. For any actor to be directed by Phylicia Rashad would be an honor and a privileged learning experience. This incredible cast, were all brilliant in their own right. But, I must say that Hill Harper and Quincy Tyler Bernstine impressed me the most. Both characters had superb emotional and comical timing.

Rose. Now we all know how class reunions can be bitter sweet, but a reunion at a funeral can be more bitter than sweet. Mr. Guirgis wrote a melancholy play and made it hilarious. Phylicia Rashad made those words visible and entertaining. Our Lady of 121st Street is playing through June 10, 2018 at the Irene Diamond Stage at The Pershing Square Signature Center.

And that, and that, and that. And some of those things over there because that’s human nature, especially if we want something we can’t have. So what would you do to get what you want? Would you, as in the new novel “Dead on Arrival” by Kiki Swinson, do something illegal?

There was always another poker game.

Reece Spencer hated to miss any of them, but he had to be careful: he owed several grand for gambling and he was afraid his wife, Dawn, would find out. She’d already gone to her parents for money to keep the lights on and now she was demanding eight hundred bucks for fertility treatments.

If it weren’t for his job at the Norfolk International Termi-

nal piers and a little petty theft now and then, Reece knew he’d be in big trouble.

But no, his supervisor, Ed, looked the other way while Reece and his buddies swiped the occasional big-screen TV from international containers and sold the goods elsewhere.

Ed knew how much his boys needed the dough, so he asked Reece and his friends if they wanted in on a big job. Reece was all ears.

Fifteen thousand dollars.

That was the pay-off. All they had to do was to move a couple of shipping containers to a different spot on the pier, but it had to be done quick and quiet without being seen. There were people inside those containers.

Reece knew that human trafficking could mean prison time.

But Ed swore there was no way to get caught, and Reece believed him – even if Dawn didn’t. She loved the cash, hated the idea, but bills needed to be paid and she wanted a baby, so when the first job went smoothly and Ed’s contact wanted to hire them again, Reece was ready for more.

On the second job, everything fell apart: three people escaped from a container and one died. The Feds found the body and more, and then someone started killing Reece’s friends.

And someone else was watching his house…

At first, it seems that “Dead on Arrival” is awfully ho-hum-predictable. There’s drama here, squabbling, greed, profanity, nosy family, the usual near-pornographic sex-

Nope. Keep reading, because author Kiki Swinson squeezes her plot until it’ll squeeze the breath out of you with twists and turns that are all-too-possible but will chill you like a horror novel. And here’s the thing: Swinson doesn’t overwrite this tale, and she doesn’t give readers everything. We aren’t allowed that full story; instead, we get just enough information, we’re left to fill in the blanks, and they aren’t pretty.
