GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE! ProVoice honored some outstanding women they called “She-roes” at their annual awards dinner event. Ambassador Susan Johnson Cooke the leader of ProVoice is quite a remarkable women herself having served in a position on the Obama staff in Washington.

Many of the women honored I was not aware of previously and I was so honored to participate in this event. (see page 10) The rain did not stop thousands from coming out to the Harlem EatUp festival this past weekend. The food and beverage sampling and cooking demonstrations went on as planned under the tents. (see pages 12-13) The Women Chamber of commerce held a breakfast presenting Councilman Mark Levine to women business owners in the area. This is an important series held by the chamber connecting women business owners to politicians who may have the opportunity to assist them with issues and opportunities that may be available to grow their business. (see page 4). .

frican stars shined Wednesday at Opening Night of the 25th New York African Film Festival (NYAFF) at Film Society of Lincoln Center (FSLC). New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray, who attended the first New York African Film Festival at FSLC in 1993, were present at the event, which is presented by FSLC and

African Film Festival, Inc. (AFF). The festivities included a screening of Apolline Traoré’s award-winning tragicomedy, Borders, a timely echo of the #MeToo movement; a short film dedicated to the memory of the late Burkinabé director Idrissa Ouédraogo; and a performance by The Daily Show’s Gina Yashere. ew York Women’s Chamber of Commerce (NYWCC) sponsored a business and legislative breakfast with NYC Councilman Mark Levine of the 7th District in Manhattan on Wednesday, May 16th, 2018 from 8 am to 10 am at the Rio Gallery located at 583 Riverside Drive.

The room was filled with women business owners. NYWCC’s Deputy Director, Program Management & Development had each person present to state their name and their business while we waited for people on the program to arrive. Quenia Abreu, President of NYWCC arrived and introduced

7th District City Council Mark Levine to the crowd. The 7th district includes Morningside Heights, West Harlem, part of the Upper West Side and Washington Heights in Manhattan.

Councilman Levine greeted us in English and Spanish and continued to answer questions in

both languages as well.

Mark began his career as a bilingual math and science teacher in the South Bronx. He was one of the founders of the Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union. In the years before he entered the City Council, Mark served as Executive Director of Teach For America-New York, as Executive Director of the Center for After-School Excellence at TASC, and as chair of the Traffic and Transportation Committee on Manhattan Community Board 12.

He currently serves as the Chair of Council Committee on Health and as a member of the Progressive Caucus, he is a leader on many issues including housing, edu-

cation, economic justice, transportation, environmentalism, and more.

Councilmember Levine has been a strong advocate for addressing inequality in New York City. He started fielding questions from the audience members and there were many. One point that stood out was how hard it is for new foodbased businesses to find adequate and affordable commercial kitchens to cook in. There are only two mentioned, one in his district at Union Theological Seminary premises and one in East Harlem, Hot Bread Kitchen. We need a food incubator in West Harlem and Washington Heights.

She has successfully secured contracts with Columbia University, CUNY and Whole Foods. Councilman Levine was quite interested in coming by her shop once he realized it’s in his district.

Two representatives from the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) also spoke to the audience about their agency’s ability to provide small business owners with commercial lease assistance and other legal services.

Harlem News Group, Inc. publisher Pat Stevenson stood up and shared with the audience how she received free, pro bono legal services from a top NYC legal firm that she could not afford without the connection provided her by SBS that helped her maintain her businesses when someone was trying to take them away from her. At the end of the session several audience members went to have a private conversation with the SBS representatives. A good testimony can open people’s minds to see they needed to connect with this agency.

Rebuilding Puerto Rico post-Maria holistically addressed at Diaspora Summit

he Center for Puerto Rican Studies (El Centro) at Hunter College hosted the third annual Puerto Rican Diaspora Summit May 12-13 with a focus on the rebuilding of Puerto Rico post Hurricane Maria’s devastation.

Community activists, healthcare providers, academics and concerned citizens gathered to dialogue about the efforts being made to assist the 3.3 million Puerto Ricans living on the island, and the estimated over 250,000 who have left since the hurricane. U.S. states of Florida, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut have the highest concentration of displaced Puerto Ricans.

De León mentioned the relief of hearing-impaired children, whose anxiety can be triggered by the complete darkness, in receiving the solar light. Ramón Serrano passed out flyers for his one-man show, which is also a fundraiser for Acupuncturists Without Borders in Puerto Rico. Serrano reported they have serviced over 1,000 people in Puerto Rico.

One panel focused on the effect of the hurricane on mental health. Oscar Ocasio-Colón, who works at Roberto Clemente Family Guidance Center at Gouverneur Hospital, meets many Puerto Ricans from the island experiencing symptoms of trauma, such as depression and anxiety. He visits the hotels, where many are now staying, to provide emotional support.

Ocasio-Colón spoke about a “family-systemic ecological

approach” of therapy which helps individuals understand their emotions in context of culture and environment. He also advocated for moving away from pathologizing individuals who would benefit greatly from simply being listened to.

Some of the panelist also spoke of “disaster fatigue,” which highly affects care-takers, social service workers and all those who are providing physical and emotional support to their community. Carissa Cabán-Alemán and her colleagues at Crear Con Salud (Grow with Health) work with Puerto Rican local organizations to identify communities on the island that request mental health assistance. The Crear Con Salud team travel to these communities and provide workshops on addressing emotional burn-out through

researched mental health practices such as mental health first-aid, mindfulness and transformational resiliency.

Many Puerto Rican New Yorkers were in attendance to connect with the diaspora community and learn about ways to help. Spanish Harlem resident Carmen Vásquez, 63, who brought clothing and water filers to the island in December 2017 said she came to the conference because she is “looking for lasting changes [in Puerto Rico], not bandaids.” Lizabeth Bruno, 21, a student at Hunter College, came to promote Loisaida Festival, a cultural festival, which will feature a play on the effects of hurricane Maria.

“I came [today] to hear about what’s happening [on the island] firsthand” said Bruno.

arket values for homes in Harlem continue to increase. I’m sure by now many of you are starting to get frustrated over not being able to purchase a home in your own neighborhood? I know many prospective buyers who are ‘mortgage ready’ but not able to purchase.

They have adequate money for the down payment and a solid credit history but cannot find anything that they can comfortably afford in Harlem. The bottom line is their pre-approval amounts are not high enough to purchase most homes in Harlem.

So, they are effectively being priced out of the market.

So, what can you do to buy in Harlem? It will not be easy, but if you want to own

property in this community you will need to do the following: (1) save more money. To have a comfortable mortgage payment, put more money down, at least 1020%. This will mean that you must begin to aggressively save as much money as possible each month. Eliminate all wasteful spending. Set a goal that you will save at least 15% of your monthly income each month. Stay focused on completing the home buying process.

(2) Think about starting a part time job or developing a talent/skill to create additional monthly income.

Since the home values are now so high, more money is needed for the purchase.

What can you do to earn more money?

(3) Discuss purchasing a home with trusted family members or friends. There is strength in numbers. You may need to include some additional buyers on the mortgage to be approved for the larger home values. I am seeing a recent trend of family members combining their incomes and resources just to be able to purchase homes in Harlem. This strategy can work and allow low to moderate income families to achieve their dream of homeownership.

NYC Performance of Beethoven Mass, Dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy

n Sunday, June 10th, 2018, at 4:00 pm at the St. Anthony of Padua Church, 155 Sullivan Street, in the “Soho” area of Manhattan, the Schiller Institute NYC Chorus will perform “Dona Nobis Pacem 19682018,” including Beethoven’s Mass in C Major and Afro-American Spirituals.

The performance will feature Sarah Abigail Griffiths, soprano; Linda Childs, alto; Gregory Hopkins, tenor; Paul An, bass and John Sigerson, conductor. Gregory Hopkins is also the director of the Harlem Opera Theater.

Recently, the Chorus participated in a musical commemoration in New York City of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1968, two great American leaders Martin Luther King

Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy were felled by assassins’ bullets. Great music can help us deal with these tragedies. Beethoven once said that if his music were properly understood, “warfare in and among nations would become an impossibility.”

In June 2017 the chorus performed at Carnegie Hall as part of a Centennial Tribute to Sylvia Olden Lee, the first Afro-American opera coach to be employed at the New York Metropolitan Opera. At that performance, the Chorus sang spirituals including, “Soon I Will Be Done” and “Go Down Moses,” in choral, art song settings. While there were many soloists performing, including the great bass-baritone Simon Estes, the 150-person chorus was a high point that surprised the audience with

their clarity of singing and togetherness.

The Chorus is committed to creating a renaissance in the United States based on principles of Classical Composition. In music this means Italian bel canto placement of the voice at the proper scientific tuning, as advocated

by Giuseppe Verdi of Middle C = 256 Hz (“A” no higher than 432 Hz).

The Chorus also regularly performs African-American Spirituals in keeping with the tradition of Hall Johnson, H.T. Burleigh and many others, as part of the Classical tradition, and an important American contribution to great music.

they don’t need any more, which would help them solve some of the financial challenges they face.”

And, although tax-filing season has passed, now is the time to start thinking about these tax savings so they can be in place by the end of the year and be included when seniors file in April 2019, Orestis says.

Some of those potential tax deductions or strategies for seniors include: • Costs of senior living and long-term care. If you’re diagnosed as chronically ill, some long-term care expenses can be tax deductible, Orestis says. Those expenses need to be more than 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income, though. So, what constitutes ‘chronically ill’?

“You must be diagnosed and under a certified care plan issued by a doctor or nurse that addresses your inability to perform two or more activities of daily living,” Orestis says. “Or you need to be suffering from cognitive impairments.” Family members may also be entitled to tax deductions if they are financially contributing to the costs of care for a loved one and qualify as a dependent, Orestis says.

So it’s important to keep track of those expenses.

• Long-term care insurance premiums. Owners of long-term care insurance policies can take tax deductions on premiums they pay for qualified plans – as well as other reimbursed medical expenses such as Medicare premi-

ums – as long as the premiums are greater than 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income, Orestis says.

• Life insurance and changes to the estate tax. Many large life insurance policies were purchased over the years as a wealth and legacy-preservation strategy to offset the impact of estate taxes, Orestis says. Prior to tax reform, the first $5,490,000 of income was exempt from the estate tax for individuals and nearly $11 million was exempt for married couples. Now exemptions have been roughly doubled to $11 million for individuals and $22 million for a married couple.

“That means insurance policies currently in force to protect estates valued

below the new levels are no longer necessary,” Orestis says. “This presents a chance for the policy owner to sell the policy and recoup some or all of their premium payments under more advantageous tax conditions.”

An accountant or financial professional could provide more details about whether you’re eligible to take advantage of any of these deductions or strategies, Orestis says.

“The important thing to remember is that if you’re facing long-term care or other retirement expenses that seem to be more than you can handle, you may have options you hadn’t thought about,” Orestis says. “Knowing the tax rules and how they apply to your personal situation can make

a huge difference.”

just love it when someone says something to me that inspires me to think about things differently. Case in point; over the weekend I went to dinner with a couple of friends.

As conversations go . . . we managed to talk about our various interests and of course, work! We have a great deal in common; we are entrepreneurs, and we

have a lot of creative energy and ideas that we would like to pursue.

We look forward to our dinners because it is an opportunity for each of us to seek guidance and frank input from one another. Our conversations are enlightening, thought-provoking and sometimes downright eye-opening! If you work for yourself, you know what I mean . . . it’s easy to get stuck and frustrated because the solution that you are seeking to a challenge is often right in front of you, and you don’t recognize it because you are too close to the situation! I call it the “vacuum cleaner effect.”

Much like a vacuum cleaner, which sucks up everything in its path, the

“vacuum cleaner effect” happens when you work alone and rely only upon your own perceptions and expertise. Nothing comes in unless you allow it, and nothing goes out unless your machine malfunctions big-time, then stuff spews all over the place!

Only then are you forced to look outside of your vacuum cleaner for answers or input. Now, you and I both know that to limit your interaction with others also limits your perspective.

Think about all the good information you are missing out on!

Now, back to my friends. . . When I shared my challenge with them of course they were able to look at it from their point of view and they even gave me some

concrete suggestions. The issue that appeared to be so complicated and perplexing to me became crystal clear in a matter of moments. No one waved a magic wand, but though their unfiltered vision, they managed to see possibilities that eluded me!

Well, my girlfriends were right on the money!

No matter how many times I remind myself to step outside of my cozy, creative environment; from time to time, I find myself in my vacuum cleaner dealing with the effect! So, I asked my friends how they manage to overcome the aforementioned “effect” and their answer was quite simple, “Audrey,” they said. “It always boils down to how much you enjoy wallowing

in that dusty vacuum cleaner bag. Whenever you feel a need to change that funky bag, throw it away from yourself and don’t bother replacing it. Instead, just try something different!” It seems simple enough and now that I think about it, maybe too simple . . . but definitely worth trying. So don’t wait for your vacuum cleaner to malfunction.

Face it, we all lose focus at times, and it’s too easy to go inward and collect nothing but dust, but when things aren’t going quite the way you planned, and you need a new perspective, maybe a simple solution is the best one. So why not just, try something different? Think about it. See you next week.

Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Celebration

n May 5th, Harlem celebrated the bicentennial of Frederick Douglass with a program of music, dance, oratory, and historical lecture at the Mother A.M.E. Zion Church; a historically Black Christian denomination whose landmark church on West 137th Street began with a congregation of free and enslaved blacks from the Underground Railroad.

The program is one of five events curated and performed by Tami Tyree, a singer and historian who began researching and writing about Frederick Douglass three years ago. Hosted in collaboration with the office of the Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, Ms. Tyree was awarded a Proclamation in honor of her work regarding the famed abolitionist, journalist, statesman, and social reformer.
