Northside Center Raises Over $1.2 Million at Annual Gala to Support Early Childhood Education and Mental Health Services

orthside Center for Child Development – one of the city’s foremost mental health and early childhood education providers – held their annual 2018 gala, “Building Brighter Futures,” at The Plaza in New York City on Wednesday, May 9. The event raised more than $1.2 million to support early childhood education and mental health services for children and families across New York City.

“Northside Center is grateful for the outpouring of support we received this year at our annual gala,” said Dr. Thelma Dye, Executive Director & CEO of Northside Center. “It is

Discovering the Best of Black America in 2018

here is an old African proverb that says, “What you seek, you will surely find.” We live in a world where the news cycle continues to decrease, because of innovations in communications technology. Yes, we are living in the fast-paced digital age. The high-velocity delivery and transmission of news and information, however, may or may not produce authentic or accurate facts or simply the truth.

Yet, for more than 47 million Black Americans the reality of life’s multiple challenges and opportunities are not the primary concerns and focus of what is popularly known as “mainstream media.” Thus, the value and mission of the Black Press of America today is more strategically important than ever before, for Black Americans and others who embrace the trend-setting cultural, academic, technological and game-changing achievements that are accomplished daily in Black America.

This is why the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) is pleased with the continued partnership between the General Motor’s Chevrolet Division and the NNPA to sponsor the 2018 Discover the Unexpected (DTU) Journalism

Scholarship and Fellowship Program. We are identifying and mentoring the next generation of young, gifted, talented and committed journalists and publishers who will rise to take their rightful place as our future community leaders and business owners.

Seeking out the best of Black America, not only in the field of journalism, but also in the overall context of the long-protracted struggle for freedom, justice, equality and empowerment is of the utmost importance. This summer in Georgia, Virginia, New York and in Washington, D.C., six NNPA journalism scholars selected from Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) located across the nation will have the opportunity to work in Black-owned newspapers.

These outstanding NNPA DTU Fellows will also journey together to highlight and file news reports about real life stories that are occurring in our communities. In the current national media climate where allegations

of “fake news” are routinely propagated, we will welcome receipt of the news and inspirations from the writings, videos and social media postings of our young, aspiring journalists.

We are also grateful to the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) for assisting Chevrolet and the NNPA to notify and reach HBCU students attending 120 HBCUs across the nation about the DTU fellowship opportunities. In fact, over 23,000 online responses were made by students who were interested in the DTU program.

Reviewing and evaluating the numerous applications that were submitted revealed the tremendous academic achievements and commitments of HBCU students, who fervently desire to serve the empowerment interests of Black communities via their respective journalism skills and talents.

This, in itself, is a good news story.

Too often we only learn or hear about the tragic injustices and systematic racial discriminations that are in fact facets of the realities that are all too prevalent in Black America. We need, however, more balance and truth-telling in the media

when it comes to the struggles and plight as well as the resilience and transformation of Black America.

For more than 191 years, since the first publication of “Freedom Journal” in March 1827, the Black Press of America has continued to be on the frontlines reporting our triumphs, defeats and our successful resistance to oppression, injustice and inequality. Each generation has a responsibility to help prepare the next generation to take the baton of history and to run to win by breaking and setting new records of achievement and excellence of all fields of endeavor.

Again, we publicly thank General Motors – Chevrolet for enabling the NNPA to award this group of young, freedom-fighting scholars to sharpen their pens and commitments to become champions of the freedom and responsibilities of the press.

The Black community will benefit. All of America will benefit. The DTU Fellows will seek and they will find.

They will also exemplify the good news.

he value of homes in Harlem are steadily increasing. Most banks are far more conservative in their lending practices than just a few years ago. These are two factors that are making it difficult for low to moderate income individuals and families to purchase anything worthwhile.

However, there is some help for first time home buyers. There is a grant program offered through the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York called the First Home Club. This is a savings program that will give you $4 for every $1 you save!

Currently you can save a maximum of $1875 and the program will match it with $7500 to use for down pay-

ment and/or closing costs.

Naturally there are some restrictions to the program: (1) you must meet the household and income guidelines. (2) You must use a participating lender, in New York City there are only 5 banks participating in the program they are HSBC; M & T; Valley National, Sterling National and Astoria. (2) You must make regular monthly deposits for a minimum of 10 months. If you miss a month you will have to add that on to the back of the program. (3) You must be ready to purchase a home within 24 months of starting the program. This includes the 10 months of savings. (4) You must complete the Home Buyer Education Workshop such as the

one offered at Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement, Inc. (HCCI).

As of this year, each lender has a set number of applications that they can submit for this grant, so getting into the program is somewhat competitive.

I have the applications for each lender and can help you start the process. With housing prices skyrocketing to the point of homes not being affordable, it is good to see there is still some help for first time buyers.

The Harlem Chamber Players present “Harlem Songfest”

he Harlem Chamber Players, Inc. (THCP), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting diversity and arts inclusion, will present “Harlem Songfest as the season finale concert of its 10th Anniversary Season.

This gala concert will showcase some of Harlem’s best voices, including Met Opera sopranos Janinah Burnett and Brandie Sutton, mezzo-soprano Lucia Bradford, tenor Chauncey Packer, and baritone Kenneth Overton, with conductor David Gilbert (of the Greenwich Symphony) and a 35-piece orchestra comprised of members of The Harlem Chamber Players. The performance will take place at 7:00 PM on Friday, June 1, 2018

Harlem EatUp Celebrating Harlem Restaurants

ood choices available in Harlem have changed. I was born and raised in Harlem and forty-five years ago there were primarily soul food and seafood restaurants in Harlem. Back in the day besides Sylvia’s there was Louise’s Family Restaurant (owned by a relative of Sylvia’s), Wells Supper Club, Copeland’s (the fancy restaurant) and Reliable Catering (the Sweetie Pie’s style cafeteria eatery) that was on 145th Street in between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway owned by the late Mr. Calvin Copeland. There was Singleton’s BBQ on Lenox Avenue on 136th St (where DD is at now), and Sherman’s BBQ had three locations in Harlem and one in Wash-

ington Heights; Sherman Hibbitt owned the apartment buildings over every restaurant he opened. Who didn’t go to the late Thomas Wilson’s restaurant, Wilson’s on 157th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Washington Heights to eat?

Their soul food was on par with Sylvia’s and Copeland’s and their donuts rivaled George’s Pastry Shop

that was next door to Con Edison’s old office on 125th Street in between Lenox and 5th Avenues!

There was as so many fish and chips restaurants in Harlem back then; just as there are fast food Chinese restaurants in Harlem today.

The only Chinese restaurant I knew of was Ling Fong and that was a fine dining Chinese restaurant that had

linen table cloths and the two gigantic fish tanks in the waiting area. My late mother always got Lobster Cantonese and we got shrimp fried rice when we got take out. There was a store on St. Nicholas Avenue near St. Nick’s Pub that sold rotisserie BBQ ribs.

Robert Lee’s pot boiled seafood on the street at 137th Street and Lenox Avenue was the best; from spring through fall nobody ever bought anything but fresh fish in the fish markets when he was doing business. Their steamed seafood couldn’t hold a candle to his pot boiled choices.

Most restaurants serving Spanish food were owned

by Puerto Ricans and a few Dominicans that some served fried chicken like Corporal on 156th Street

and Broadway or John’s Fried Chicken that had two locations; 149th Street and Broadway or up on 207th Street and Post Avenue in Inwood. The 207th Street location sold roasted pernil, yuca mashed potatoes and rice and beans. Every now and then there was a Jamaican restaurant with oxtails, jerk chicken and rice and beans. Even the Muslims had a Steak-n-Take store up on Amsterdam Avenue in between 149th and 150th Streets. One thing they all had in common; everything was from scratch and nothing was processed food.

Fast forward to 2018 and there is more diversity in the types of cuisine you can eat in Harlem. There are also more classically trained chefs, chefs born in foreign countries fusing their

cultural ingredients into the dishes they learned to prepare in French restaurants and even home chefs that have expanded beyond what they grew up on to incorporate other cuisines; they are serving up farm to table experiences just like Grandma used to do. Vegan and gluten-free food choices are also on the rise in Harlem. Caribbean, African, Indian, South and Central American, Canadian, Asian and European chefs have come to Harlem and they are all doing their thing in Harlem and a foodie like me loves it.

Some place new is opening every month. They only thing we are still missing is the fine dining Chinese restaurant.

Macy’s Herald Square Celebrates the 4th Annual Harlem EatUp Festival

n Friday, May 4th, 2018 at 6 pm Macy’s Herald Square celebrated the upcoming 4th Annual Harlem EatUp Festival by hosting one of their Culinary Council members and the festival’s co-founder, Chef Marcus Samuelsson of Red Rooster Harlem and five additional Harlem food business on the 8th floor Home department at the store. For the price of $25 guests enjoyed an evening of delicious food and live entertainment by the Rakiem Walker Project band featuring Gloria Burn for Macy’s Home department shoppers, as well as the culinary event guests as they gathered and stood on line waiting for admission.

with Chef Marcus Samuelsson with an exclusive preview of the festival and spoke with Chef Marcus and received a copy of his latest book, The Red Rooster Harlem Cookbook (guest received when they checked-in) which he signed as well. If that wasn’t enough Macy’s also gave each guest a $10 Macy’s gift card they had to use before the store closed that evening.

Besides Red Rooster Harlem, five other Harlem food business owners got the chance to speak on the Main Stage with Chef Marcus about their businesses in front of the guests and sample tastings from each eatery. So, there were six food tastings, plus Macy’s sponsored a Wine Bar station and provided each guest with two beverages to cleanse our palates in between the six tastings. What a great

The conference’s missions are to expose new participants to the joy of genealogy and to further research the historical travels of people of the African diaspora.

producer, national speaker and co-author of “Our Ancestors, Our Stories.” She graduated from Grambling State University and has a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan. Keynote speaker Shannon Christmas is an experienced genealogist specializing in genetic genealogy, colonial American research and African-American genealogy in Virginia and the Carolinas.

The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) is a national organization dedicated to research and documentation of the history, genealogy and culture of people of African ancestry.

The organization was founded in 1977 in Washington, D.C., by a small group of historians and genealogists who felt a need to share re-

sources and methodology.

For more than 35 years, members have worked together to trace the historical ties that bind us to one another, mold the present and shape the future. AAHGS’s first chapter was chartered in Columbia, MD in 1989, and the New York Chapter received its charter the same year. The organization now has 31 chapters in 20 states and the District of Columbia. AAHGS members are people of varying ages, ethnicities and professions, all united in their desire to preserve our past as a way of enabling our future. member, Jean Sampson Scott. ou always keep your eyes on the prize.

You’ve given yourself no other options and your steadfastness is your compass. What you believe will happen. What you know is truth. Say it enough, and everybody else will know, too – especially when, as in the new book “The Sun Does Shine” by Anthony Ray Hinton with Lara Love Hardin, the truth is one of innocence.

On a night in the summer of 1985, twenty-nine-yearold Ray Hinton checked in with the security guard at his workplace, just as he’d been told to always do. He hadn’t been at the job long, but that

had become his routine every night before getting assignments for his shift, doing work he liked.

Reaching that point hadn’t been easy.

The youngest of ten children, Hinton was his mother’s “baby” and he continued to live with her after high school; though he’d thought about college, there was no money or scholarship for it.

Instead, he found work at an Alabama coal mine, hating the work, loving the paycheck, still wanting what he couldn’t afford.

He took a car he never paid for, and it cost him a few months in jail.

By that evening in the summer of 1985, though, Hinton had resolved to make his Mama proud. He was again employed, sober, living on the straight-and-narrow, had checked in with the guard as he was told, and worked until it was time to go home.

And that was where he was arrested five days later, accused of a robbery and murder committed while he was at work, miles from the crime scene. His trial was short. The jury was all-white, as were the judge, prosecutor, defense attorney, and a ballistics “expert” that was no expert. During the trial, Hinton “knew” he’d be con-

He was innocent. And he was sent to Death Row. Because there’s a book about this, you’ve probably already figured out that author Anthony Ray Hardin is a free man now. Or maybe you won’t be: at times, Hardin himself seems to expect many of the things that happened to him, which leads to a whole host of emotions for a reader. You shouldn’t, in fact, be at all surprised to feel frustration, sadness, white-hot anger, and crushing despair – sometimes, from the same page.

And yet, despite that you’ll cringe inside, Hardin also makes readers’ souls soar with words that reveal small beauties between horrors, and kindness where you don’t expect it. That’s like taking an amusement-park ride with no seat belts: hang on tight, because it might hurt.

What’s left to say, then, about this book? Nothing, except that you’ll like it for everything it wrings from you. “The Sun Does Shine” could be the most impressive book you’ll lay eyes on.
