Cheri Harlem Restaurant is Chef Alain’s Labor of Love

C

heri Harlem New York restaurant is located at 231 Lenox Avenue in between 121st and 122nd Streets in th village of Harlem. It’s owned and operated

by Chef Alain Eoche. “I live right above the restaurant, and I feel like Chéri is an extension of my house. It’s not really like a restaurant. It’s like people are coming to have dinner and drinks with me at my place. I only buy organic food and I cook the classic French dishes,” he stresses, “and I make everything myself–even the

ketchup,” Chef Alain proudly states.

Chef Alain Eoche says Chéri is everything he’d hoped it would be. After owning a restaurant in Paris for 20 years, he decided to move to New York — the city he had loved ever since his first visit at 21 years old. “It was scary, but I just decided to do it. I felt as if I was watching my dream on a screen, and I wanted to step through the screen and into my dream.” Harlem is a far cry from Paris, but Eoche feels at home in the neighborhood’s friendly, kind, and welcoming

community.

Chef Alain invited my Harlem Community News, Inc. publisher Pat Stevenson and I to dine with him on Thursday, May 3rd to update us on some changes he had made to the restaurant. He took out the

grand piano, but he has added white glove delivery service to select neighborhoods near the restaurant during its pilot phase.

We sipped pink champagne as we dined on appetizers of salmon mousse, roasted button

mushrooms stuffed with goat cheese, French onion soup with croutons and gruyere cheese.

For our entrees we selected angus tenderloin served with peppercorn sauce, sautéed potatoes and haricot string beans and beef bourguignon cooked in beef broth, burgundy sauce and tagliatelle. For dessert we both chose crème brulee.

Delivery is free Tuesday through Sunday from 6 pm to 10 pm from 110th to 139th Street from Amsterdam Avenue to Madison Avenue. Chef

Moe’s Unisex Hair Hut on Madison Avenue

oe’s Unisex Hair Hut is located at 52 East 125th Street Suite #3 New York, NY 10035 (646) 692-4128 on the Southeast corner of 125th Street and Madison Avenue on the second floor. It is owned by Monae Shepard, a hair-stylist extraordinaire with 30 years of experience and she is one of the subjects in the movie titled “7 Days in NYC,” which features a day in the life of Monae Shepard at her salon. Monae is inviting everyone to come out on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018 from 6 pm to 10 pm at the Harlem Community Center located 220 E 125th St, to view the film for the admission price of $10. She will also be

launching a new product she developed to called “Hair Fresh,” a hair fragrance deodorizer.

Monae started doing her own hair at 12 years old; her friends and classmates liked her styles and wanted her to do theirs as well. Moe’s Hair Hut is her third hair salon and it’s a close-knit team or family of licensed hair care professionals for women and men who work in harmony; It’s a drama free zone. It’s a full-service salon specializing in various weave techniques, precision cuts, color treatments, make-up application, eyelash extensions and barber services. Moe states that sometimes she feels like a life coach to her clients. “I pray with them and always remind them to walk in the light and don’t hold on to negative thoughts or people. My Mom passed away 2 years ago. She was a priestess and taught me that my place of business should be a professional place with harmony in place. So, I try to stay grounded in this place.

Energy is a part of everything.”

Monae is a proud single mother of her 18-year old son Julian who is 6’4” tall.. He loves to play basketball and is graduating from the Academy for Social Action’s high school next month. Moe works hard raising her son and at

growing her business.

Moe also admitted she tends to hide in the shadow of her accomplishments; she wants to be glamourous but doesn’t want the attention focused on her. Case in point in 2016 Moe’s shop was featured in the movie.

“7 Days in NYC,” a film made by one of her clients, a VH1 director and she’s just sharing it with people now.

Moe is inviting everyone she knows, including her clients to attend her event; some light refreshments will be served along with having some vendors there like the Eggroll Queen too. I hope to see you there on May 23rd watching Monae blossom.

Healthy & Clean Harlem Campaign 2018

• Remove unsightly litter • Paint over graffiti The campaign is open to all neighborhood groups, organizations, businesses and residents in Manhattan’s Community Boards 9 and 10 Here is how it works: Participants must set up and organize a cleanup activity on their own to take place on May 18th.

Participants can clear away illegal dumped waste that have piled up in the neighborhood. Recyclable materials must be collected and recycled properly.

Cleaning materials can be picked up (like the colorful art bags) at the press conference and community event held on May 18th at

10 am at 124th Street between Adam Clayton Powell (7th) and Frederick Douglass Boulevard (8th). DJ Mike Doelo will be spinning sounds with special guest appearance by Battle rapper Loaded Lux. Barbara Askins is working with the community boards and NYC Department of Sanitation to extend the deadline date for getting additional cleaning materials such as loans on cleaning tools and supplies for the cleanup effort.

Steps to enter Harlem’s 1st Clean Up Competition: 1. Go on https://125thstreet.submittable.com/submit 2. Click on 125th Street BID, Manhattan CBD 10, Manhattan CBD 9 Neighborhood Clean Up Competition and review eligibility and steps for submitting your application.

3. Scroll down and create your account.

4. Begin to fill out all sections of the form (contact information, group type, location, etc.). Be as detailed as possible with your cover letter, description of problem, how you solved the problem, etc.

5. Don’t forget to upload before and after photos.

You can select up to 6 files and include photos from the day of the cleanup.

6. Check off agree to Terms of Use box before you submit.

7. Hit submit!

Seniors: New York City is Proud of Your Hard Work

his week, high schools across the five boroughs have been celebrating College Decision Day. This is an amazing opportunity to congratulate our high school seniors for years of hard work, and come together to support them as they make a very big decision: what’s next after graduation!

Across New York City, a record number of students are graduating high school and going on to college. On College Decision Day, as we celebrate, we are also building on this progress and paving the path to our goal of College Access for All. As seniors make their college choices, and as their school communities cheer them on, younger students are watching. They are thinking about their own paths to college and careers, and seeing their role models successfully apply for and enroll in college.

Seniors, I want to thank you and share how proud I am of you. On a personal level, so many of your stories remind me of my own.

Like many of you, I started school not knowing a word of English. My mom was a hairdresser, my dad was a sheet-metal worker and builder. My mom had a high school diploma, and my dad never finished school but went back and got his GED to set an example for me and my brother. Yet they believed in the power of education, and they told me and my twin brother: “You are going to college.”

When I graduated from high school, my brother and I visited the University of Arizona – which

we would both went on to attend and graduate from – for the first time with our parents. I remember walking through a big, green college campus full of beautiful buildings. To my surprise, my father looked around and began to call out all of the buildings by name. I asked him with astonishment, “How do you know all of these buildings so well?” He replied, “Mijo, I helped to build many of these buildings. I know them inside and out – and never did I think that I would come back here as the father of two students. Before to-

day, I only came here to work.”

As you get ready to move on to college and careers, so many of you will be thefirst – the first to go to college, to graduate from college, to get a professional certificate or join the military, to pursue college or a career outside of New York City.

Remember the sacrifices your families have made to help you get here, and to reach your potential.

Thank them. And please take a moment to thank the teachers, counselors, and school staff who’ve made you feel valued and pushed you forward day in and day out. I also hope that you’ll stay involved in your community and your school, paying it forward and being a mentor for children who look up to you and need all the support you can offer.

We all believe in you.

We believe that you will lead our communities and our entire country to a better place. Thank you for brightening our schools, our homes, and our lives, and congratulations on your next steps. We are so proud of you.

here has been some discussion to increase the income limits for the Home First Down Payment Assistance Program. This is a forgivable grant program for first-time home buyers offered through New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPP). The program can offer a grant for 6% of the purchase price grant to eligible time first home buyers up to $25,000!

The grant award can be used for 50% of down payment or 100% of the closing costs.

The eligibility requirements are: (1) be a first-time home buyer; (2) purchase a home within the five boroughs of New York City; (3) complete a home buyer education workshop by an approved housing counseling agency.

Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement, Inc. (HCCI) is an approved agency; (4) meet the household and income guidelines.

You can go to www.nyc.gov/ hpd to see the income guidelines. They will vary depending on the number of people in your household; (5) use an authorized lender. The website will also have a list of authorized lenders for this program; (6) the purchase price of your unit cannot exceed the maximum limits for that type of property i.e. single family, two family etc.

If you are eligible for other grant programs they can be combined with this program to maximize the amount of ‘free money’ you can have at your disposal. The home buying process is an extremely expen-

sive proposition. Most low to moderate income buyers find it nearly impossible to purchase property without some financial assistance. The lack of having adequate savings for the down payment and closing costs is an obstacle that has prevented many from completing this process.

There are still many challenges for prospective buyers especially with home values in Harlem continuing to soar upward. But now some help is available. You still must aggressively save as much money as possible.

ebel Theatrical Management, LLC (Harvey Butler, producer), in association with The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture, have announced the cast and the creative team for the New York premiere of the new play Little Rock, written and directed by Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj. Performances are set to begin Wednesday, May 30, 2018 for a limited run through September 8, 2018 at The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture (18 Bleecker Street).

What’s a Pharmacist Got to Do with It?

n these times of much ado about addiction to opioids and other pharmaceuticals, everyone must pay close attention to what medications have been prescribed by our most trusted doctors.

With this urgent matter on her mind, Senior Advocate, Dr. Marcella Maxwell, Ph.D., and member of Greater New York Links, Inc., gathered a large contingency of seniors to visit Touro College of Pharmacy in Harlem to discuss an important subject, Prescriptions: Know What You’re Taking.

The fully packed bus of seniors from The Esplanade Gardens and The Abyssinian Baptist Church, met other community attendees making their way to speak

After breakfast and a warm welcome, Dr. Maxwell introduced the moderator, William Hamer, Harlem Advocates for Seniors, Inc. Touro College Deans, Henry Cohen and Ken Rosenblum were on hand with gracious greetings and a history of the college.

Pharmacists matter! In fact, the pharmacist is a backup person to doctors.

Also known as chemists or druggists, they are healthcare professionals who practice in pharmacy, the field of health sciences focusing on safe and effective medication use.

Pharmacists undergo university-level education and study to understand the biochemical mechanisms and actions of drugs, drug

uses, therapeutic roles, side effects, potential drug interactions, and monitoring parameters.

The Keynote Presenter was Ruth Jean, a forty-year Registered Pharmacist. Advice flowed swiftly along with insights on dementia, Alzheimer’s and mental health medications, and included steps to follow: Take all medications as prescribed on the label; Missing a dose (don’t double up); Never take another person’s medicine, our DNA is different; Dispose of old prescriptions (check expiration date and clear medicine cabinet); do not mix different pills in one container; and focus on any side effects after taking medication to discuss with your pharmacist and your doctor).

She also emphasized building a relationship with your pharmacist and one pharmacy. Just as your health records are on file in your doctor’s office, the pharmacist has access to the medications that are prescribed for you and is aware of what medications should and should not be combined. The pharmacist is not attempting to dispute the advice of your doctor, but rather to bring certain drugs to your attention so that you can ask the right questions.

There are no silly questions.

Many attendees took the opportunity to discuss their medications with the

pharmacists. One question of interest was the difference between a generic and a brand medication. Ruth Jean replied that they are the same but manufactured by a different company and generics are often less expensive. This is subject to discussion with your doctor and health care provider.

Pharmacy students of Touro College were assisting with forms and information, along with Dr. Lillian Kang, PharmD. The day ended with a good lunch and good food for thought.

William Hamer reminded seniors that they can take care of their health with

active, focused attention on ways to “Stay at home, age in place” and Pharmacist Ruth Jean proclaimed, “Live until you die”.

Q. How important is exercise when you are a senior? Is it worth the risks of hurting yourself?

All the current scientific evidence shows that geezers should exercise, even though many older people think it could harm them.

Study after study demonstrates that seniors hurt their health a lot more by being sedentary.

If you’re inactive, you deteriorate. Physical activity can help restore your capacity. Most older adults, regardless of age or condition, will benefit from increasing physical activity to a moderate level.

Warning: If you want to begin a new exercise program, you should consult

your physician and request a list of exercises that are best for your age and physical condition.

Four types of exercise are important for your health. These are exercises for strength, balance, stretching and endurance.

Strength exercises build muscle and raise your metabolism. Doing these exercises will help to keep your weight down.

Balance exercises help prevent falls and, therefore, will keep you from breaking yourself and losing your independence.

Each year, U.S. hospitals have 300,000 admissions for broken hips; many of them are the result of falls.

Stretching exercises give you more freedom of

movement. And endurance exercises raise your pulse and breathing.

Here are 10 tips to make any exercise program safe: 1.) Don’t hold your breath during strength exercises. This could affect your blood pressure.

2.)

When lifting weights, use smooth, steady movements.

Breathe out as you lift or push a weight, and breathe in as you relax.

3.) Avoid jerking or thrusting movements.

4.) Avoid locking the joints of your arms and legs into a strained position.

5.) Some soreness and slight fatigue are normal after muscle-building exercises. Exhaustion, sore

joints, and painful muscle pulls are not normal.

6.) Always warm up before stretching exercises.

7.) Stretching should never cause pain, especially joint pain.

8.) Never bounce into a stretch; make slow steady movements instead.

9.) To prevent injuries, use safety equipment such as helmets for biking.

10.) You should be able to talk during endurance exercises.

Measuring your progress can motivate you. Test yourself before starting to exercise to get a baseline score. Test and record your scores each month. The following are some tests you can use, if your doctor approves.

The Catch

I

was invited by Greg Gates co founder of Imagenation to view a film at Raw Space Gallery. The gallery is the space where Greg and his wife Moikgantsi the other half of Imagenation show amazing new and old films.

The name of the film was Jewel’s Catch One Club. Jewel Thais-Williams owned and operated The Catch for over 40 years. The film directed by C.Fitz told the story of Jewel’s forty year struggle to address racism, sexism and homophobia in L.A. In the early 70’s gay rights

women rights even civil rights for people of color were not respected in most cities including L.A. Jewel was a black female lesbian and owner of the most popular club in L.A. were gays, movie and recording stars and people who loved to dance partied together.

The first few years was very difficult. Police harassment was a everyday occurrence. The club was raided two to three times a week. The city did all that it could to shutdown the Catch. Not only did Jewel overcome all of this to create what was considered the unofficial Studio 54 of the West Coast; she also became a community leader.

During the early stages of the AIDs crisis Jewel went back to school to obtain a masters in oriental medicine and opened

the Village Health Foundation, she also opened a vegetarian restaurant. Jewel opened Rue’s House one of the first shelters for women with AIDs with their children.

United States Representative Maxine Waters gave Jewel the credit for allowing her to understand the necessity to create legislation to address the AIDs crisis in America.

The film Jewel’s Catch One is now on Netflix. It’s worth seeing.

The film allowed me to obtain a better understanding of the struggles that many in the LBGTQ community still face today. They are truly a community within the community.

During this year’s HARLEM WEEK celebration the theme is Women Transforming the World Past, Present and Future. There

ince my last column I assume that all you moms have chosen a summer camp for the children, planted an award-winning garden, finished spring-cleaning and you are now feeling absolutely, positively—tired. So, in honor of Mother’s Day (and in tribute to the rest of you who take better care of everyone else, but

yourself), I have a few prescriptions for pampering. For those of you reading this who want to give your mom a gift, there are also a few ideas to inspire you.

Moms, indulge yourself! On Mother’s Day you will be presented with gifts from family and friends in honor of your role as “the mommy.” Each gift will be well intended and appreciated so be thankful.

However there are a few things that only you can do for yourself and why not take the opportunity to “cut loose” for bit?

The prescription is a simple one: Do not be afraid to buy yourself a gift. You deserve it, and besides, it

will probably be the only gift guaranteed to be the one you wanted!

Take a mini vacation by yourself. Chill out at a local bed and breakfast or upscale hotel for a weekend get-away from the kids and hubby. Or if you haven’t seen family or friends who live out of town in a while, visit them—just don’t stay at their homes. Stay in a nearby hotel or spa and just come into town to sit with them for a few minutes; then go back to your hotel/spa for more relaxation.

Reconnect with yourself. Think back to what you said you wanted to be “when you grew up!”

he controversy over Kanye West’s remarks in regard to slavery being a choice indicates the lack of awareness many of our brothers and sisters have about our heritage. There is no need to call for boycotts of his music – honestly – how many of his albums do you already have? I say again that one of the many things that keep America great is our ability to speak freely. I’ve learned to let someone who makes foolish statements continue down their chosen pathway.

This week Bill Cosby was found guilty of 3 counts of sexual assault in a Philadelphia courtroom. The uproar around that conviction has reverberated across the country. Without discussing the merits of the case it should be pointed out that the court can convict in a 30-year-old case, but can’t indict a police officer seen on video for killing Eric Garner. The criminal justice system has once again shown its true colors. Not red, white and blue, just white.
